  • Tom Hessert Endures Tough Luck At Michigan

BROOKLYN, Michigan (June 20, 2011) – – Tom Hessert III in the No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet Impala SS for Ken Schrader Racing (KSR) had high hopes for Friday’s RainEater Wiper Blades 200 at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). However, a solid start to the eighth race of the season, the team would encounter some setbacks that ultimately would take the Cherry Hill, New Jersey native from competition.

On the heels of three consecutive top-10 runs, Hessert was aiming to put his blue and white Chevrolet bowtie up front in the Motor City. After mounting the 12th fastest time in the lone practice session on Thursday afternoon, the KSR team led by crew chief John Monsam were set to tackle qualifying.

Friday morning offered both time trials and Hessert’s fourth tango with MIS. In qualifications, Hessert posted the 15th fastest time overall, the team’s seventh top-15 starting position thus far in 2011.

At the start of the RainEater Wiper Blades 200, Hessert was a man on a mission. Quickly maneuvering his No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet Impala SS through the competitive field, Hessert was able to move into the 14th position when the first caution flag of the day waived on lap three.

Restarting the event on lap 10, Hessert returned to battle and continued to climb the leader board. With a solid race setup underneath him, the former USAC competitor found himself knocking on the door of entering the top-10 by lap 20.

With a quarter of the race over with, Hessert found himself contained in the 11th position as the field began to stretch out during the green flag run. Reporting to Monsam of a tight condition on his No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet Impala SS, the team would have an opportunity to adjust on their race car when the yellow flag waived on lap 30 for debris with Hessert finally able to climb into the 10th position.

Restarting the race on lap 37, Hessert held onto the 10th position before finding himself in a taunting battle with Bryan Silas and Chad Hackenbracht. While the three continued to battle for ninth, 10th and 11th.

With Hackenbracht overtaking the No. 52 by lap 38, Hessert re-entered the top-10 on lap 40 when third place runner Sean Corr lost a right front tire. The yellow flag waived again on lap 41 when the No. 55 of Hal Martin also lost a right front tire with Hessert locked in the ninth position.

The former USARacing Pro Cup Series star would have to relinquish his position inside the top-10 when Hessert reported a problem with the brakes on his General Motors automobile generated from debris on the race track. Coming to the attention of his KSR crew, the team determined that the right front brake line had been broken, which the team repaired and bleed but in the process Hessert lost a lap to the competition.

Down but not out, Hessert was determined to become the Aaron’s Lucky Dog when he restarted the race in the 19th position.

Unfortunately, the team’s day would go from bad to worse as on lap 52, Hessert lost a right rear tire on his No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet sending his machine hard into the outside wall, collecting Maryeve Dufault along the way.

Although heavily damaged, Hessert tried to re-fire his machine and head to the garage but to no avail. Stopped on the backstretch, Hessert would climb into the ambulance for the mandatory trip to the infield care center, where he would be later be treated and released.

“It’s a shame, because I really thought we were going to have a good day,” said Hessert. “We were methodically moving our way through the field and then the problems seemed to have piled on us. The Federated Auto Racing team did a great job repairing the brake line. We went back out there, just trying to find ourselves in the hunt for the lucky dog and I knew something was wrong but the car just came around and into the wall I went. I hate that Maryeve (Dufault) was involved in that, she was having a good day too.”

He added, “I’m not going to try and dwell on Michigan. There’s still a long way to go this season, we just have to bounce back next weekend at Winchester. I’ve never been there, but I like the short tracks in ARCA, so hopefully we can rebound for everyone at Federated Auto Parts, Cherry Hill Classic Cars and Ken Schrader Racing.”

With Hessert’s 29th place finish, he slipped from seventh to eighth in the championship standings 100 markers behind Tim George Jr.

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards is a return to Winchester (Ind.) Speedway for the running of the Winchester ARCA 200 presented by Federated Auto Parts.

  • HOORAHS AND WAZZUPS: A FED EX SPECIAL DELIVERY TO THE IRISH HILLS OF MICHIGAN

HOORAHS AND WAZZUPS: A FED EX SPECIAL DELIVERY TO THE IRISH HILLS OF MICHIGAN

Over the previous weekend we watched a heavily favored championship contender finally locate victory lane again not to mention finally finding the top ten in the points standings. Oh yeah, there may also be a temporary, but highly significant, rise in the cost of oil pans for Toyota Camry’s in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. With those thoughts in mind, let’s begin with:

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit]HOORAH to Denny Hamlin for parking his FED EX/Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in the victory lane of Michigan International Raceway following the Heluva Good Sour Cream Dips 400. After winning eight races last year, Hamlin and this team was heavily favored to be a major contender for this year’s Chase For The Championship. But the team got off to a horrible start and last Sunday finally found their first win of the year.

However, the team was showing some signs of regaining their strength and clawed their way back to 12th in the points. That Fed Ex special delivery to victory lane allowed Hamlin to elevate the team to ninth in the standings and it appears that this pre-season favorite may be back on track again.

Hamlin led the final eight laps of the race and collected $202,200 in prize money. That’s a good thing because team owner Joe Gibbs may need some of that money to pay the anticipated cost increase of three oil pans confiscated by NASCAR last Friday.

    ***********

WAZZUP with those heavy weight oil pans confiscated from all three of the Joe Gibbs Racing cars last Friday? This situation began during a pre-practice NASCAR tech inspection when it was determined that the oil pans were unapproved parts. Basically what that means is: all parts on a Sprint Cup car has to be on an official list maintained by the NASCAR technical officials. The Gibbs teams replaced the oil pans with the approved models and were allowed to go out onto the track for practice. While the possibility of some sort of penalty might be coming towards the Gibbs organization, NASCAR officials honestly didn’t anticipate that penalty might include the loss of driver and owner points.

However, by Friday afternoon the plot to this story developed a very interesting twist. The standard size oil pan for a Sprint Cup car weighs approximately four pounds. The weight of the three pans removed from the Gibbs cars weighed between 20 to 30 pounds. It was theorized by many that these unusually heavy pans could allow the Gibbs teams to remove or relocate the standard weights on the car thereby creating an unfair handling advantage.

It’s likely that a decision regarding penalties will be handed down by NASCAR on Tuesday. It’s also likely there will be a highly significant rise in the cost of oil pans.

HOORAH to a great question raised relative this issue during a media press conference last Friday. JGR driver Denny Hamlin was asked if he thought “Fed Ex delivered the wrong pans to the race shop.” Hamlin just replied “Nope.”

HOORAH for the fact that this latest round of embarrassment for Joe Gibbs Racing can’t, in no way, be blamed on the behavior of Kyle Busch.

    *************

WAZZUP with the disappointing finishes from all four of the Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet’s? This is especially true of Jimmie Johnson and his #48 team. “Jimmie Five Time” has never one a race at Michigan. He still hasn’t. Early on, after only nine laps into the race, Johnson suffered an uncharacteristic, and unassisted, spin out. He left the pits a lap down but with a broken sway bar. The next caution flag, and the lucky dog pass, put him back on the lead lap at least for a moment. But that broken sway bar had to be replaced on pit road and Johnson now found himself at the back of the pack two laps down. He had to settle for a 27th place finish and fell from second to fifth in the points

WAZZUP with the eerie darkness in the eyes of crew chief Chad Knaus when these things happen to his team? Sometimes he resembles some evil character in a modern day horror movie. I’ve often wondered if you can turn into a pillar of salt just by looking into those dark pupils.

Hendrick driver Jeff Gordon was basically not a factor at all in the race and finished 17th. The lone Hendrick bright spot was Mark Martin’s ninth.

But WAZZUP with the Hendrick Motorsports bright spot becoming somewhat involved with robbing team mate Dale Earnhardt Jr of another top ten finish? The unintentional incident saw Martin’s car sailing up high on the backstretch directly in front of Earnhardt who scraped the wall to avoid rear end contact. Unfortunately that wall contact involved some right front tire damage. The tire eventually blew and Earnhardt found himself scraping the wall again. Earnhardt was the class of the Hendrick field of cars but had to watch a sure fire top ten turn into a 21st place finish. He still remains third in the standings but, had this incident not have happened, he would have taken over second due to Johnson’s problem.

After the race Earnhardt raised more than a few eyebrows when he commented on being “pissed off” due to a careless act. Fear not Junior Nation fans, Mark Martin will make quick work of smoothing over the waters at Hendrick because that’s what a class act like Martin does.

    **************

HOORAH to Roush Fenway Racing for their one-two finish in Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Michigan. Carl Edwards passed team mate Ricky Stenhouse Jr in the waning laps for his 33d career win in the series.

HOORAH to Stenhouse for another strong Nationwide Series performance. How good is this kid getting? Remember last year when we all thought Jack Roush was going to fire him for wadding up too many race cars? What a difference a year makes.

    *************

In some final thoughts this week HOORAH to team owner Jack Roush for a great observation regarding NASCAR’s “have at it boys” policy and his fellow team owner Richard Childress.

During a post race interview on Saturday, after his Fords finished one-two in the Nationwide Series race, Roush was asked about the altercation between Kyle Busch and Richard Childress, following the NASCAR Truck race at Kansas, and was specifically asked if he felt the Childress $150,000 fine was too high.

“It was pretty high,” Roush said adding “I guess that pretty much puts the nail in the coffin on the have at it boys.” Roush further suggested that maybe the big difference here was the fact that the Childress vs Busch incident wasn’t so much of a case of have at it boys but was more of a ” boy and a man” situation. “I am not sure, maybe that is different than the boys having at it. Kyle has been been pretty rough on my cars over a period of time and for Richard to stand up for himself is OK,” he said.

    **************

HOORAH to the country music group Emerson Drive and the Acapella Chorus Team from the U.S. Army for outstanding renditions of “The National Anthem.” I’ve always admired acapella performances because I have a keen sense of how important perfect pitch and timing are to these performances. These guys were right on the mark last weekend.

    ***********

HOORAH for this week’s “Twitter” moments provided by Toyota driver Denny Hamlin. Participating in a fan chat fest Friday night, Hamlin was asked: “prior to becoming a full time race driver, what was the worst job you’ve ever had?” Hamlin replied: “I worked at a Subway( sandwich shop).” There has been no noted rebuttal comments from either fellow driver Carl Edwards, a Subway spokesman, or Jared the ultimate company representative.

During that same “Twitter” session a fan asked Hamlin: ” what’s the first thing you do in the morning after you wake up?” Hamlin replied: ” Pee ! ” This question came from a female fan and, surprisingly, there was an absence of the traditional question: boxer, briefs or commando?

    ***********

WAZZUP with the “Now Hiring” logo on the rear quarter panels of Carl Edwards’ AFLAC Ford? Okay, I know this is a promo for the team sponsor but you have to consider the coincidence of that logo being on the car at a time when Edwards is in contract negotiations with his team, is considered to be the number free agent from the 2011 silly season and is rumored to being courted by Joe Gibbs Racing.

I assume that AFLAC is “now hiring” insurance agents and not personal assistants for the duck.

  • Virginia’s Own Denny Hamlin Takes the Checkered Flag

Virginia’s Own Denny Hamlin Takes the Checkered Flag

In a quest to make it into the 2011 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship, Virginia’s own Denny Hamlin drove his way to the checkered flag Sunday at Michigan International Speedway.

Sunday’s win is Hamlin’s first of the season, after winning eight times in 2010 and contending for the series title. He entered the weekend 12th in points with no guarantee that he would make the 2011 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship. With Sunday’s victory, Hamlin jumped to the ninth position in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings and with the win is one step closer to securing a spot in the championship field.

“This is the point of the season where we really need to start hitting our stride, and hopefully we’ve got another good 10 weeks before the Chase starts,” said Hamlin. “Realistically, you know if the whole world collapses and ends, you’re still one win away from getting a Chase spot, pretty much. We know two wins pretty much puts you in. From here on out, we know we’re one win away.”

Hamlin will return to Richmond International Raceway, his home track, on Saturday, September 10 for the “One Last Race to Make The Chase,” as the defending race winner. Tickets for the September 9-10 NASCAR doubleheader weekend are on sale now and can be purchased at www.rir.com or by calling the Richmond International Raceway ticket office at 866-455-RACE (7223).

Max Papis No. 33 Nationwide Series Advance: Road America

    Max Papis

    No. 33 Menards Chevrolet Impala

NASCAR Nationwide Series Race 16 of 34 – Road America

PAPIS ON BOARD: Max Papis teams up with Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) for the second time in his NASCAR career this weekend behind the wheel of the No. 33 Menards Chevrolet Impala for the Bucyrus 200 at Road America. Papis made his first start with the team at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal last season in the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet. He qualified for the event in the ninth position and finished second.

ROAD COURSE RACING: Road America will be the first of three road course races for the NASCAR Nationwide Series this season. The Elkhart Lake, Wis., track made its debut on the series’ schedule last season. KHI competed in the inaugural event with four-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion Ron Hornaday in the No. 33 Chevrolet. The team started from the 12th position and finished 11th.

“ROOKIE VETERAN” AT ROAD AMERICA: While this Saturday’s event will mark Papis’ first Nationwide Series start at Road America, it will not be his first time to compete at the 14-turn road course. The Italian-born driver competed in the Champ Car Series for eight seasons collecting several podium finishes at Road America.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Paul Menard joined KHI for the third time this season for the Alliance Truck Parts 250 at Michigan International Speedway. Menard qualified the No. 33 Menards Chevrolet on the pole, his third-career Nationwide Series pole and the team’s second pole award in 15 races, and brought home a solid fourth-place finish. The No. 33 team is fifth in Owner’s Point standings, 41 points from the lead with 19 events remaining in the season.

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Menards team has prepared chassis No. 075 for this weekend’s event at Road America. This chassis, new to KHI’s inventory this season, was tested at Virginia International Raceway in May with Papis.

THOUGHTS FROM THE DRIVER: MAX PAPIS

What are your thoughts going into this weekend at Road America?

“I am really looking forward to racing this weekend at Road America. This will be my first NASCAR race there so I will be considered a rookie, but it will not be my first race at the track. I spent a lot of time at Road America and in the Milwaukee and Green Bay area when I raced in the Champ Car Series. It is a great track and the area is beautiful. They have awesome fans. I can’t wait to get there and race.

“I am looking forward to joining the KHI team this weekend. I am going there with one goal: be the first Italian in the modern era to win a NASCAR race. I know in this No. 33 Menards Chevrolet I will have a good chance of winning the race.”

This is the first road course event of the year. Is Road America similar to the other courses on the schedule?

“Road America is different than Montreal and Watkins Glen [International]. It is very unique and one of the longest courses that you will run on. It presents a lot of challenges. Road America is one of the most technical and traditional tracks here in America. It has a lot of fast corners. It will be a very technical race.”

    About Menards:

With 263 stores in 13 Midwestern states, Menards has the tools, materials and supplies for all your home improvement needs whether just needing a light bulb or can of paint to building a deck or new home. A Pit Road Incident Relegated Blaney to 34th-place Finish at Michigan

No. 36 holds onto 32nd in Owner Points

BROOKLYN, MICH. (June 20, 2011) – Dave Blaney started the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 from the 42nd position. A pit road incident during the first pit stop caused damage to the No. 36 Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) Chevrolet and relegated the team to a 34th-place finish at Michigan International Speedway. Despite the finish, the TBR team held onto the 32nd spot in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Owner Points.

Blaney posted a lap of 39.417 seconds to secure the 42nd starting spot in the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400. The Hartford, Ohio native took the green flag and quickly drove to the 34th position by the first caution on lap nine.

Happy with the changes the TBR team made to the Chevrolet for the race, Blaney drove down pit road for a four-tire pit stop. As he pulled into the pit box, Blaney was hit from behind by Regan Smith, which caused him to spin into the pit stall and damaged the left rear. Facing backwards, Blaney drove off and returned to pit road. The team worked to fix the damage to the left rear of the No. 36 Chevrolet.

The field restarted on lap 12 with Blaney in the 41st position. He worked his way back up to 33rd by lap 23 but radioed that the car was really loose and getting worse, especially in turns three and four. Three laps later, Blaney radioed that he lost the car in turn three and hit the wall with the right rear.

The second caution of the day on lap 28 allowed the team to reassess the damage and make changes to help the handling of the No. 36 TBR Chevrolet. The team made an air pressure and wedge adjustment during the four-tire pit stop. Blaney restarted 32nd on lap 30. Four laps later, he radioed that the changes made the car worse. It was now tight as well as the loose condition.

The TBR team continued to make changes to battle the aero problem the car was having from the damage on pit road and hitting the turn-three wall. The team made major adjustments on the last four pit stops, but Blaney continued to battle the aero-loose condition. He kept the car in the top-35 but fell three laps down. A caution with 10 laps to go allowed the team to stay out and get a lap back. Blaney finished 34th, two laps down.

The finish kept the No. 36 in the 32nd spot in NSCS Owner Points. The team now sits 23 points outside of 31st and 53 points ahead of 36th. Blaney holds onto the 31st position in NSCS Driver Points, 23 points behind David Gilliland in 30th.

“At the start of the race, the car was pretty good,” explained Blaney. “The team made a lot of changes before the race, and before the first caution, it ran really good. The incident on pit road with Regan hurt us, and then, I hit the wall in the corner and we couldn’t even run close. The start of the race was better than we were on Friday. We struggled in the corner on Friday but during the race that was way better. We didn’t get to race very long, but the car felt good when we did get to race. Making the improvement from Friday was definitely a step in the right direction.”

Blaney will return to NSCS racing this weekend at Infineon Raceway. He will pilot the No. 36 Big Red Chevrolet for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 on Sunday, June 25th.

    About Tommy Baldwin Racing:

Tommy Baldwin Racing was formed in 2009 by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Crew Chief Tommy Baldwin. Baldwin utilized a slumping economy to open a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team with a stringent budget. The team competed in two full seasons with multiple drivers behind the wheel of the No. 36 Chevrolet and improved in the standings each year.

Based in Mooresville, N.C., TBR will compete in the full NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule in 2011 with NASCAR veteran Dave Blaney piloting the No. 36 Golden Corral Chevrolet. Looking to improve on-track performance, TBR found success early in the 2011 season with partners Golden Corral, Big Red and Accell Construction. TBR’s driver development program, Heinke-Baldwin Racing, will also compete in various NASCAR series in 2011.
