A TUMS’ ‘FIGHTS BACK FAST’ MOMENT: ERNIE IRVAN FOUGHT BACK FROM THE REAR OF THE FIELD TO EARN SECOND WIN OF SEASON

    A TUMS’ “FIGHTS BACK FAST”MOMENT

(For each of the 36 races during the 2011 Sprint Cup season, TUMS will provide a brief historical recap of a moment when a team fought back to overcome an obstacle, one that can easily be described as a TUMS “Fights Back Fast” Moment. This week, the focus is on Infineon Raceway).

ERNIE IRVAN FOUGHT BACK FROM THE REAR OF THE FIELD TO EARN SECOND WIN OF SEASON

The date was June 7, 1992. Ernie Irvan, driver of the Morgan-McClure Racing Chevrolet, began the 1992 Save Mart 300k on the road course named Sears Point from the second position, but was dealt a setback immediately.

NOTE: TUMS is the sponsor of the TUMS Fast Relief 500, the seventh race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, at Martinsville Speedway on October 30.

NASCAR officials determined Irvan jumped the start over pole-sitter Ricky Rudd, in the Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, and was forced to drop to the rear of the field. For the entire 74-lap event, Irvan fought back gaining positions on the track and on pit road with flawless pit stops. He was fifth by lap 35 and had moved up to second with 12 laps remaining. Five laps later, he drove past Terry Labonte in Billy Hagan’s Oldsmobile for the lead en route to victory.

“I didn’t know I did anything wrong,” Irvan said in post-race interviews. “After I got black-flagged, I never really got excited. I just drove my race. I pushed my car as hard as I could go without making a mistake. I still thought we could win.”

Irwin fought back to post his second of three wins during the 1992 season.

  • Edwards Wins Nationwide Race at Michigan with Ford FR9

Edwards Wins Nationwide Race at Michigan with Ford FR9

Mooresville, NC (June 20, 2011) – Carl Edwards took his Roush Yates powered FR9 to Victory Lane in front of Ford country on Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. With 9 laps to go, Edwards passed Ford teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to win the Alliance Truck Parts 250 and give Roush Fenway Racing three cars finishing in the top five. Edwards, Stenhouse Jr., and Bayne dominated the race, leading a combined 101 of the 125 lap event. Other Roush Yates engine drivers showcasing their power this weekend were Ryan Grubaugh and Chuck Hebing in the Sprint Car series and Josh Richards in the World of Outlaw Late Model series.

“Ricky drove his heart out — that guy is unbelievable,” Edwards said in victory lane. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to get him, but it was like his car got tightened up. Man, he did a good job. … I thought Ricky was setting sail. He’s someone I’m a little nervous about in the future.”

Stenhouse held on to second place, crossing the finish line 1.669 seconds behind Edwards, and took the lead in the series standings by two points over eighth-place finisher Elliott Sadler.

“We just got too tight there at the end,” said Stenhouse. “It was a good one-two finish for Jack and everyone at Roush Yates Engines. This track definitely needs a motor and we have it. This was a great day for Ford, we wanted a one-two-three finish, but three cars in the top-five and one-two is pretty good.”

Roush Yates experienced success on the dirt tracks as well this weekend. Ryan Grubaugh won at Cherry Raceway on Friday night in the Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt series. Grubaugh is currently second in the series points for 2011 and races a Roush Yates Sprint 360 engine. Chuck Hebing won at Lebanon Valley Speedway on Saturday night, earning his first Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints win of the season.

Josh Richards found Victory Lane in the Ernie Davis Roush Yates powered Ford at Winchester Speedway in the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. This is Richards’ 29th career World of Outlaws triumph, breaking his tie with Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky. and becoming the circuit’s winningest driver since 2004.

  • Sean Corr; Empire Racing Flex Muscle In Michigan Despite Finish

BROOKLYN, Michigan (June 20, 2011) – – Without question, Sean Corr and his Empire Racing team made a bold statement Friday afternoon at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). And even though the team once again didn’t receive the finish they rightfully deserved, the competition knew that Corr’s No. 82 Roush Yates Performance / Roush Yates Engines / Empire Racing Ford Fusion were a contender in the RainEater Wiper Blades 200.

On the adrenaline of a successful open-test at the two-mile oval last month, Corr and his family-owned team led by Michigan native Howard Bixman returned to MIS looking to flex their muscle and put their operation in the hunt for a top-10, if not a victory.

All indications led in the right direction as Corr in practice found his No. 82 Roush Yates Performance / Roush Yates Engines / Empire Racing Ford Fusion tucked inside the top-10 during the lone practice session before eventually landing in the 13th position overall. Strong adjustments made by the team left the Goshen, New York native heavily optimistic heading into qualifying.

Unlike his prior start at Michigan International Speedway, time trials would not be held on the same day as practice. Instead, the stars and cars of ARCA would set the grid for the eighth race of the season Friday morning. Corr maneuvered his No. 82 Roush Yates Performance / Roush Yates Engines / Empire Racing Ford Fusion to the 17th fastest lap. However, the team wasn’t fazed by their starting position as they felt their blue oval would solider to the front once the green flag flew.

The team’s intuitions became a reality. A quick caution on lap three stalled Corr’s path towards the front but returning to racing conditions several laps later offered the ability for Corr’s automobile to begin the march towards the lead pack.

Through the race’s first 30 circuits, Corr nicely negotiated his Ford Fusion through the extremely tight field and moved into the 12th position when the second yellow flag of the afternoon waived.

Bixman opted to bring his driver to pit road for two right side tires and fuel. The pit strategy paid off bolting Corr from 12th to third on the scoring pylon.

Despite the call for two tires, Corr’s No. 82 Roush Yates Performance / Roush Yates Engines / Empire Racing Ford Fusion brilliantly remained in-toe with the leaders, most of whom had taken four tires. Fending off some of the strongest teams in ARCA competition including nine-time ARCA champion Frank Kimmel, Josh Richards and Joey Coulter, Corr appeared to be heading towards his strongest run of the year in the ARCA Racing Series before on lap 40, an unexpected parts failure would cause the right front tire to go down forcing an unscheduled trip to pit road for four new Hoosier tires.

Upon further inspection, the team notified Bixman that the right front brake rotor had been destroyed, which initially caused the tire to deflate, forcing the Empire Racing team to quickly push their race car behind the pit wall to replace the rotor.

Magnificent repair work by the crew had Corr back on the track quickly where the team would use the remainder of the day to salvage as many crucial points as possible in order to stay in the top-10 in the ARCA Racing Series championship standings. After sitting as low as 30th in the running order, Corr quietly climbed the leader board to take the checkered flag in the 24th position.

“One of these days, we’re going to have everything go our way and get the finish we deserve,” said an obviously frustrated Corr. “We had a good car, a real good car. The Roush Yates Performance / Roush Yates Engines Ford Fusion was going to be a contender. We made a call on pit road early and I think it was the right call, we just didn’t expect the tire to blow. We just haven’t had the luck on our side when we really needed it.”

The 27-year old added, “I have to give props to the Empire Racing team. Howard (Bixman), John (Bellesfield, team manger) and the whole team built me a really fast car and words cannot express my thanks to them for putting us in position for a great run. We’re going to get ourselves some redemption here soon and we’ll prove to everyone that never giving up will equal rewards.”

Despite avoiding a DNF (did not finish), Corr did slip to 10th in the ARCA Racing Series championship standings, but stands just 10 markers behind ninth place competitor Chad Hackenbracht.

Corr made his 18th career ARCA start at Michigan International Speedway on June 17. In those 18 races, the avid dirt racer has maneuvered nine top-16 efforts and 14 top-20 finishes including seven in the first eight events of 2011. Pocono Raceway hoists the track with Corr’s career best finish of 11th in June 2011. An eighth place qualifying effort at the 2.5-mile triangle also in August 2010 is also a personal best accomplishment to date.

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards is a return to Winchester (Ind.) Speedway for the running of the Winchester ARCA 200 presented by Federated Auto Parts. Corr will make his inaugural debut at the Indiana short track with a brand-new No. 82 Roush Yates Performance / Roush Yates Engines / Empire Racing Ford Fusion.

  • Bayne Surges to 16th at Michigan in his Return to Sprint Cup Racing

Bayne Surges to 16th at Michigan in his Return to Sprint Cup Racing

Trevor Bayne, back in the driver’s seat of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion for his first race in more than two months, scored a solid 16th-place finish in the Heluva Good 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Bayne and his Donnie Wingo-led Wood Brothers crew spent the early portions of the race adjusting the chassis of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Fusion to compensate for a handling issue that saw the car be tight into the center of the corners and loose off. Then they had to use strategy to overcome the loss of a lap when the caution flag flew during a mid-race round of green-flag pit stops in which they had stopped but some of the leaders hadn’t.

Using the wave-around rule to their advantage, the Wood Brothers team got back on the lead lap and held on until another caution flag flew. Then two quick late-race pit stops, both in the 13-second range, put Bayne in a position where he was able to surge to 16th at the checkered flag.

“It was a good ending,” team co-owner Len Wood said. “The crew adjusted on the car all day long and got it a lot better on the last two pit stops. It was a good comeback.”

It also was a good comeback personally for Bayne, who was running his first Sprint Cup race since April 17 at Talladega Superspeedway. After 400 miles, he seemed no worse for the wear and showed no signs of the illness that took him out of action for most of the past two months.

“I feel fine, so I’m ready and I’m back and it was good to finally get back in this Cup car,” he said. “It wasn’t too bad for our first run back there, 16th-place finish.

“This team is doing a really great job this year.” Bayne, racing at Michigan in a Sprint Cup car for the first time, said he learned things that will help him in the future at Michigan and at other similar tracks.

“I learned a lot about how to apply the brakes to keep the car turning all the way through the center of the corner, and I think that’ll transfer to everywhere, every race track we go to,” he said. “So I’m going to keep trying to use that.”

Bayne, who has just 10 career starts in NASCAR’s elite division, added that he still has a lot to learn.

“I’ve got to get better at figuring out what this thing needs in practice and telling exactly what it needs so we can get better in the race,” he said. “But we’ll keep working on that as well. It was a pretty hard-fought 16th. We got a couple of them there at the end. At least we were moving forward there at the end of the race.

“The No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion still looks good. There are not too many bumps and bruises on it, so we can keep running this thing.”

He also sounded pleased to have a strong finish at the home track for his and the team’s sponsor.

“I love the Ford people being here in Michigan (including Frederiek Toney, Vice President of Ford Customer Service Division and Brett Wheatley, Director, Marketing, Ford Customer Service Division),” he said.

Bayne and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team will return to the track on July 2 at Daytona International Speedway for the Cup circuit’s first time back at the famed track since February when Bayne scored the Wood’s fifth victory in the Daytona 500.

  • Strong Run For Maryeve Dufault; Tony Marks Racing Spoiled In Michigan

BROOKLYN, Michigan (June 20, 2011) – – ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards Rookie of the Year contender Maryeve Dufault put on another good showing Friday afternoon at Michigan International Speedway in Tony Marks Racing’s No. 12 Mad Croc / VR-12 / Dodge Motorsports Dodge Charger. Unfortunately, the results won’t show just how strong the team’s performance was as Dufault became a victim of circumstances during the RainEater Wiper Blades 200.

Despite the Sorel, Quebec’s limited experience at the two-mile oval, Dufault showed extreme maturity during practice, qualifying and during the eighth race of the 2011 season.

After negotiating the 22nd fastest lap during practice, the Tony Marks Racing (TMR) team led by Darren Wolfe and Ryan Chism along with Dufault made some adjustments to their No. 12 Mad Croc / VR-12 / Dodge Motorsports Dodge Charger hoping for a solid starting position. In qualifying, Dufault raised the bar by maneuvering the 16th fastest lap putting smiles on the rookie team heading into the race.

Immediately from the start of the race, Dufault maintained a position in the top-20. An early race caution would keep the former NASCAR Canadian Tire Series from making an early race charge. On the lap 10 restart, Dufault locked the 16th position.

By lap 20, she had slipped back to 17th but the rookie was biding her time and logging laps in her Michigan International Speedway. Five laps later, she lost a position to Matt Merrell while battling tire wear and some tightness.

The caution flag though would waive by lap 30 with Dufault on the lead lap and solidly in the top-20 where four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment were on deck for the Tony Marks Racing rookie during routine pit stops.

Restarting in the 17th position, Dufault moved into the 16th position on lap 41 with her sights set on entering the top-15. When Hal Martin blew a tire at the same time, the yellow flag waived once again allowing the opportunity for the TMR team to catch up to the rear of the field and prepare to throttle forward.

The lap 47 restart positioned the popular ARCA driver in the 12th position. With determination to move into the top-10 in the second half of the event, the No. 52 of Tom Hessert lost a tire in front of the No. 12 Mad Croc / VR-12 / Dodge Motorsports Dodge Charger forcing Dufault to take the high line to avoid Hessert’s spinning machine. Hessert though clipped her as he drifted back up the track sending the former road racing talent into the wall on the backstretch.

She was able to leave the scene of the incident under her own power but heavy damage to the No. 12 Mad Croc / VR-12 / Dodge Motorsports Dodge Charger would ultimately force the TMR team to exit the event after 52 laps. The team was credited with a frustrating 28th place finish.

“It’s frustrating, because we had a really good car,” said Dufault. “I cannot thank Mad Croc, VR-12 and Dodge enough for the opportunity to allow us to race at Michigan. We were going to have a good day. I learned an awful lot. I went to the high side and had no where to go when I got clipped. It’s stinks because I wanted to leave here still in the top-10 in the championship standings, but we’ll look ahead to Winchester next week and see what we can do.”

Tony Marks, team owner commented on the team’s performance in the Irish Hills. “There was nothing no one could do; this unfortunately is part of the game. I cannot tell you how proud I am of Maryeve. She was doing a magnificent job and was going to have a good finish to carry us into Winchester next weekend. We’ll just go there and look to close what we started here.”

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards is a return to Winchester (Ind.) Speedway for the running of the Winchester ARCA 200 presented by Federated Auto Parts. Dufault will make her inaugural debut at the Indiana short track.

    About Tony Marks Racing (TMR):

Tony Marks Racing was founded in 2009 through the passion for racing of team owner and former driver Tony Marks.  Marks is the successful owner of TMT, Inc., a logistics, warehousing and packaging company with over 400 employees whose customers are mainly comprised of Fortune 100 companies.

For the NASCAR events TMR along with TMT, Inc. partnered with Forgotten Harvest for the “Million Meal Challenge For Our Kids” which helps to bridge the hunger gap while schools are out of session and feeds 20,000 children per day in the Detroit metro area. Forgotten Harvest was significantly displayed on the entry of Chase Austin during both the Truck and Nationwide events at Michigan International Speedway along with logos of “Million Meal Challenge” sponsors Walgreen’s, United Race Group, Holyfield’s Choice Alka-Power Water and Vitamin Spice.  Evander Holyfield was also instrumental in the challenge, acting as Grand Marshall for the August race and announcing his “Fight Against Hunger” on behalf of Forgotten Harvest.

As the first race team to “Drive Against Hunger” through their partnership with Forgotten Harvest, TMR plans to continue their alliance with Forgotten Harvest and once again “Drive Against Hunger” during the 2011 season.

  • Last Lap Incident Spoils Top-10 For Matt Merrell; Win-Tron Racing

BROOKLYN, Michigan (June 20, 2011) – – Matt Merrell had every reason to be frustrated upon the conclusion of Friday’s RainEater Wiper Blades 200 at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). After keeping the nose clean on his No. 32 Champion Oil Toyota Camry for 80 of the event’s 100 laps, Merrell made his move into the top-10 only to be taken out of competition on the last lap of his MIS debut.

The Lakeville, Minnesota team arrived in the Irish Hills of Michigan with a brand new Toyota Camry hoping to guide Merrell towards another strong run in his inaugural meeting with the two-mile oval.

The teams were given an hour and a half practice on Thursday afternoon to dial in their machines with Merrell eclipsing the 11th fastest lap overall. The team led by ARCA wizard Mike Chaffee made some slight adjustments to their Japanese nameplate hoping to give Merrell a comfortable race setup.

Time trials occurred on Friday morning with Merrell being coached by his team to just make a good lap. With a loose race car underneath him, Merrell negotiated the 19th fastest lap.

Despite their starting position, the veteran ARCA team had little worries about their performance during the 100-lap shootout.

The green flag waived shortly after 5:15 p.m. with Merrell attempting to throttle his way in the field. An early race caution would waive on lap three with Merrell uncharacteristically slipping back to the 21st position.

Waiting for his car to come to life, Merrell would slowly inch his No. 32 Champion Oil Toyota Camry through the running order closing in on the first quarter mark.

When the second yellow flag of the day waived on lap 30, the Portland, Texas native had climbed into the 16th position offering a prime opportunity to enter pit road for tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment.

Restarting the race in the 14th position, Merrell methodically began working his way up the leader board and by the half-way mark; the former USARacing Pro Cup Series star had crafted his Toyota into the 10th position.

The Win-Tron Racing development driver would hover inside the top-10 for the remainder of the event but coming to a green white checkered, Merrell sitting ninth had his sights set on a potential seventh place finish.

In a three-wide battle on lap 99 of the race, Merrell found himself racing with nine-time ARCA champion Frank Kimmel and Chad McCumbee. Kimmel drifted up into the path of Merrell which turned the No. 32 Champion Oil Toyota Camry hard into the outside wall on the backstretch.

Heavily mangled, Merrell left the scene of the incident to slowly creep across the start finish line to avoid a DNF (did not finish). Merrell would be credited with a 15th place finish.

“I always have had a lot of respect for Frank (Kimmel), but this is the second time in three races where I’ve had a problem with the way he drives,” offered Merrell. “I’ve always given him a lot of room and raced him clean but his boldness cost us a good finish for the team and Champion Oil. I hate it. I’m frustrated and disappointed. I just don’t know want to say.”

Win-Tron Racing co car-owner Nate Thiesse offered his comments on Friday’s outcome. “It’s a shame to be taken out the way we were like that on the last lap. I’m all about for good, hard racing but what happened to Matt and us today could have been easily avoidable. It’s discouraging for Matt because of the bad luck he’s had the last couple of races, but this team stands behind him and we know he can get the job done at Winchester next week.”

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards is a return to Winchester (Ind.) Speedway for the running of the Winchester ARCA 200 presented by Federated Auto Parts. Merrell will make his inaugural debut at the Indiana short track.

Merrell made his 21st career start in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards at Michigan International Speedway on Friday. In those 21 outings, Merrell has eight top-fives including runner-up finishes of second at Berlin (Mich.) Raceway and Pocono (Pa.) Raceway (August) in 2009 and 11 top-10s. His best start position for Win-Tron Racing occurred at the tricky triangle of Pocono (Pa.) Raceway where he qualified his No. 32 CollinsHope.org Dodge Charger second in June of 2009.

  • Robb Brent 11th In ARCA Return With ESR At Michigan International Speedway

BROOKLYN, Michigan (June 20, 2011) – – Shelby Township, Michigan native Robb Brent was just thankful to be in last Friday’s RainEater Wiper Blades 200 at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). Upon the conclusion of the 100-lap event, Brent offered his hometown fans and sponsors a well-earned finish in the No. 2 AutoDealAds.com Toyota Camry.

Brent, who after running two full time seasons in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards took a brief sabbatical this season to regroup his racing career announced a two-race deal with the potent Eddie Sharp Racing (ESR) which launched in Brent’s backyard at the two-mile oval of MIS.

With AutoDealAds.com stepping up to the plate as the primary sponsor of Brent’s first ARCA event at the wheel of a Toyota Camry, the road racing ace was looking to use the eighth race of the season to strut his stuff.

In the lone practice session on Thursday afternoon, Brent who reunited with crew chief Dave Leiner worked on the chassis setup on their No. 2 AutoDealAds.com Toyota Camry which landed the Denver, North Carolina-based team 20th in the overall rundown.

Not discouraged by the practice effort, Brent gathered his thoughts with Leiner and the two put their heads together to put a qualifying setup that would be both fast but not take away from the team’s overall plan of a healthy race setup.

In time trials Friday morning, Brent maneuvered his ESR machine around the Irish Hills track in 40.147 seconds or 179.34 miles per hour landing 22nd in the starting lineup. Comfortable with the car’s handling, Brent knew his car was setup for racing conditions.

At the start of the RainEater Wiper Blades 200, Brent patiently began moving through the field. Tucked in with ESR teammate Bryan Silas, the two tried to use the draft to manhandle their way into the top-20. The duo would be stalled on lap three when the first yellow flag of the day waived.

Restarting on lap 10, Brent would hold steady in his No. 2 AutoDealAds.com Toyota Camry up the ladder during the first solid green flag run of the day. By lap 20, Brent had found himself locked in the 22nd position. By the time the third yellow of the day waived on lap 30, Brent had moved up to the 20th position.

Four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment was the call from the pit box by Leiner. A solid pit stop by the ESR crew re-entered their driver 13th in the battle.

After another caution flag, Brent remained safely in the top-15 but had his sights set on entering the top-10. By the halfway mark, lap 50, the part-time NASCAR driver hoisted the 11th position.

When Tom Hessert and Maryeve Dufault crashed on lap 52, the yellow flag conditions returned offering a perfect time for Leiner to bring his driver back to pit road to top off the fuel in case the race would stretch into a long green-flag run.

Restarting 13th, Brent would quietly maintain a spot inside the top-15 but with 35 laps remaining, the former Pocono ARCA winner would nearly avoid disaster when the No. 42 of Clay Rogers spun directly in-front of the No. 2 AutoDealAds.com Toyota Camry, the two made slight contact before the No. 23 of Levi Youster joined the mess also making minimal contact with the two colleagues.

Under the caution, Brent brought his machine to the attention of his ESR crew for damage control. With the thumbs up on the overall condition of Brent’s automobile, they sent their driver back into the race.

Over the final 25 laps, Brent would slice and dice his way from his 15th position and survive a green-white-checkered finish to claim the 11th position.

“I had a lot of fun,” said Brent. “I appreciate the opportunity and support from Eddie Sharp, Eddie Sharp Racing and AutoDealAds.com for allowing me to race at my home track with a really good race car. We didn’t quite have enough for those leaders, but we had a competitive car and we learned a lot together that will help us going to Pocono in August.”

Ironically, Brent’s 11th place lead-lap finish on Friday was the third time in the last four races where he captured the exact same position. Last June, Brent delivered a 10th place outing for Allgaier Motorsports.

Brent would personally like to thank his family and friends who attended Friday’s contest. In addition to his duties at the track, Brent participated in two autograph sessions. On Thursday night, Brent joined a slew of ARCA drivers in Downtown Brooklyn, while on race day Brent spent time with children from DeVos Children’s Hospital and the Make A Wish Foundation.

The Michigander also supported his two charities during the race week, the Macomb Charitable Foundation (MCF) and the Animal Aid Foundation.

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards is a return to Winchester (Ind.) Speedway for the running of the Winchester ARCA 200 presented by Federated Auto Parts. Brent will return to ARCA competition in August and will look to defend his title at the 2.5-mile oval of Pocono (Pa.) Raceway in the Pennsylvania ARCA 125 on August 6th in the No. 2 Eddie Sharp Racing Toyota Camry.

Prior to joining Eddie Sharp Racing, Brent participated in the ARCA Racing Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driving for NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski and Brad Keselowski Racing. Most recently, Brent spent the last two seasons in ARCA with Allgaier Motorsports, the 2008 championship team. In his 59 ARCA starts, Brent has acquired one win (Pocono 2010), six top-five finishes and 19 top-10 efforts. Brent notched his career best qualifying effort of second at Kentucky Speedway in 2008. He has led the ARCA pack five times for 55 laps. His best finish in the NCWTS occurred at Nashville Superspeedway in his inaugural truck debut where he finished 21st after qualifying 26th. The road racing ace also made his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut in 2010 driving for RAB Racing at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Denny delivers at MIS; Hamlin takes Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at MIS

BROOKLYN, Mich. (June 19, 2011) – Denny Hamlin’s declaration this time last year was clear, simple and undeniable: “All we do is win.”

That bold proclamation came after he captured the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway last June, his fifth of what would be a total of eight triumphs in 2010. It was also his second victory in a row and fourth in the previous eight races.

But Hamlin’s bravado this season has been relegated to the back seat with no victories; his mantra more like, “All we do is come close.”

Hamlin found his groove again Sunday winning the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 for the second consecutive year. His last three finishes in Michigan have been first, second in August and first again today when he edged Matt Kenseth by 0.281 seconds – about four car lengths.

“Everyone knows that we’ve been strong and today we didn’t look as strong as we normally do here, but we got it working there at the end,” Hamlin stated after his 17th career Sprint Cup win. “We made a magic adjustment and the car just took off. This is the point of the season where we really need to start hitting our stride. Hopefully we’ll have another good 10 weeks before the Chase starts.”

Hamlin has been good but not quite good enough, according to his own perspective. He now has five Top-10 finishes and four top-five finishes and went from 12th to ninth in the Sprint Cup point standings.

While Hamlin dominated the June race at MIS last year he had his hands full and his rearview mirror bursting with images of Kenseth following a restart with five laps remaining following a brief yellow caution period instigated by Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s second scrape with the wall.

Kenseth tried to pass Hamlin on the high side on the last lap and when that didn’t work he tried a low route, but that came up short, also.

“We had a really fast car and thought we had a good chance to win today,” said Kenseth. “I got a bad restart at the end and I got back to Denny but I couldn’t get around him. We were kind of slow for about 10 laps on each restart and then it seemed like we were the best car from 10 until we needed fuel. I just didn’t have enough time to get around him. I tried everything I could and I just couldn’t figure out how to do it.”

A costly restart snafu late in the race cost Kyle Busch an opportunity at victory, but his third-place finish gave Joe Gibbs Racing two of the top-three finishing positions.

“We didn’t have a great day with that restart but we turned it into a pretty good one,” Kyle Busch said.

“The 11 team (Hamlin) really, really helped us a lot last week (Busch finished third at Pocono) and I feel we helped the 11 team a little bit this week. It just goes to show we’re doing something right and we’re able to share information, which is good.”

Earnhardt, with a pair of wall scrapes finished 21st, but maintained third place in the points chase. Rick Hendrick teammate Mark Martin caused one of Earnhardt’s wall bangers.

“The defining moment in the race for me probably was getting run into the wall by Mark,” a very dejected Earnhardt said. “We had fixed the car, we were moving forward and we were doing pretty well at that point, but, you can’t do nothing about getting run over or getting run into the wall.”

Earnhardt ran strong over the first half of the race and appeared to be a contender for the victory, his first since winning at MIS in June of 2008.

Martin said, “I don’t have a history of having problems and I don’t think I have one now. I think we’ll get it sorted out. I feel like I give everybody on the race track respect. I made a mistake.”

Five-time defending champion Jimmy Johnson also had his difficulties, coming quickly and decisively. He spun out just eight laps into the race, had to have a sway bar replaced, fell two laps behind and couldn’t make it up, finishing 27th. It dropped him from second in the points race to fifth.

“We got turned around early and ground the sway bar off the right front and we lost a couple laps from that and were just kind of in a hole at that point and couldn’t get caught back up. It’s just part of it,” Johnson explained.

Result Snaps Top-10 Jinx at MIS

BROOKLYN, Mich. (June 19, 2011) — The numbers were all good for Ryan Newman following Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway (MIS).

Driving the No. 39 U.S. Army 236th Birthday Chevrolet honoring NASCAR Hall of Famer Bud Moore, Newman brought home a sixth-place finish at the two-mile oval. It was his second straight top-10 and seventh of the season.

But more inspiring for Newman, who calls MIS his home track, is that he snapped a top-10 jinx at the two-mile oval. Before Sunday’s sixth-place finish, he had a streak of 13 straight races at MIS without a top-10. His last top-10s at MIS were back-to-back victories in August 2003 and June 2004.

“It wasn’t a perfect day, but not a bad one either,” said Newman, a native of South Bend, Ind. “It was important to have a good performance for our Army Strong Soldiers on the week of the Army’s 236th birthday. Our U.S. Army Chevrolet was also paying tribute to NASCAR legend and American hero Bud Moore and I am happy that we did well since his name was on our car.”

Regarding his recent performances at MIS, Newman added, “I am not sure why we haven’t done well here lately, but hopefully today is the start of good things to come at Michigan. I love this place and love the natural beauty of the surrounding area.”

It was also a good day for Stewart-Haas Racing with Newman’s teammate and team owner Tony Stewart finishing seventh in his Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet.

Newman gained two spots in the driver point standings from 10th to eighth while Stewart lost two positions as he currently sits in 11th place. The oddity is that only two points separate Newman and Stewart.

Newman started the 200-lap, 400-mile race from the No. 13th position and ran inside the top-10 for the majority of the competition. On the final restart with five laps remaining, he was positioned in eighth place and picked off two additional spots before taking the checkered flag.

“After practice on Friday we really didn’t have much to look forward to but the guys did a good job of giving me a better U.S. Army Chevrolet and we fought back hard. We struggled on a couple of pit stops today and when we took two tires at the end the guys nailed it. I got some decent track position and was able to hold on. So a good finish for us that we typically don’t have at Michigan and I look forward to the road course next week.”

The race winner was Denny Hamlin. Rounding out the top-10 in order were: Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Paul Menard, Carl Edwards, Newman, Stewart, Clint Bowyer, Mark Martin and Brian Vickers.

The Sprint Cup circuit heads to Sonoma, Calif. for next Sunday’s (June 26) road race at Infineon Raceway.

Denny Hamlin earned his first win of the season in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race at Michigan International Speedway.

Hamlin led the final eight laps (of 200) in the Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) No. 11 FedEx Office Camry to earn the third Camry victory in 2011 and the 36th win for Toyota since joining the series in 2007.

The 30-year-old Chesterfield, Va., native was also victorious last June at the two-mile oval.

JGR teammate Kyle Busch recorded a third-place result, leading three times for 59 laps in the No. 18 Snickers Camry.

Camry driver Brian Vickers also earned a top-10 result in the 400-mile event with a 10th-place finish.

Other Toyota drivers in the field included Joey Logano (18th), Bobby Labonte (22nd), Martin Truex Jr. (26th), Kasey Kahne (28th), David Reutimann (35th), Casey Mears (38th), Joe Nemechek (40th) and Michael McDowell (43rd).

Busch is now fourth in the unofficial NSCS point standings following Michigan while Hamlin moved up three spots into ninth in the standings.

Other Toyota drivers in the top-25 in the unofficial point standings after 15 of 36 races include Kahne (19th), Truex (20th), Logano (23rd) and Vickers (24th).

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 1st What is the importance of today’s win for your season? “We finished — that’s the thing. We got it done. Happy for all this team. They all got sons or daughters and everything, so it’s a big Father’s Day for all them and my dad, Dennis. He paved the way for me to get here, so I can’t thank them enough and all the fathers out there. Can’t thank this whole FedEx team enough, everyone at FedEx, all the employees. Glad to get the win for all of them. Just got to thank them, Toyota, Sprint, Coke, Gillette, Wiley X, the fans — it’s been an amazing fan base here in Michigan — everyone from Nike and the Jordan brand, I can’t thank them enough.”

Are you getting hot a bit later than usual in 2011? “I think everyone knows that we’ve been strong and today we didn’t look as strong as what we normally do here, but we got it working there at the end. We made a magic adjustment and just the car took off. This is the point in the season where we really need to start hitting our stride and hopefully we got another good 10 weeks before the Chase starts.”

Did things come together for you after struggling midway through the race? “Yeah they did. Mike (Ford, crew chief) just kept working on this car. At times we had a 10th place car and at times we had the best car. We just didn’t get it all put together until right there at the end. I just can’t thank this whole team enough. Awesome pit stops — they are the ones that got me out in front on that last restart and that’s what we needed to win.”

Who made the decision to come to pit road with only a few laps left? “You try to base your strategy off of everyone else, but everyone’s going to do it the opposite of you. It’s a tough position to be in, but for us we knew two tires — a lot of guys were going to take two tires so we had to be the first one off of pit road with them.”

How difficult has it been to stay patient and keep your focus this season? “It’s so tough because you know you belong in the top-10 and you deserve to have a Chase spot, but the results don’t show for it. So, for us, it’s good to kind of get over this hump, get our first win of the season and hopefully it’s the first of many.”

Do you think about your point’s position at this point in the season? “You have to. If you’re not points racing at this point you’re not paying attention to the obvious, because with this new format you either got to win or you’ve got to be inside that top-10.”

MIKE FORD, crew chief, No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing How were you able to get the 11 into victory lane today? “We showed up to Michigan and started off kind of grim, but we made sure we put everything (from last week) behind us and didn’t let things affect us. This group did an awesome job. Pit stops today were incredible — that’s what won us the race. I can’t say enough about this team. Even the start of the race we were off — we were a half second off and once we got some track position we kept tightening the car up and it just came around. Denny (Hamlin) did a good job. His car wasn’t that good at the end either so he did a really good job. I can’t say enough. It’s a big win for us.”

J.D. GIBBS, team president, Joe Gibbs Racing How encouraging is it for the 11 to earn a win today? “It was real encouraging. The way the day played out, kind of struggled at the start, worked hard, it paid off at the end. Overall, the 11 (Denny Hamlin) car, each year that it’s been in existence, has been a strong-performing car. You kind of start the year off not as quickly and successfully as we would like. To watch them kind of come together and lift each other up, be a team, that was kind of for me I get a lot of satisfaction watching those guys rally around each other and look for some great momentum for the rest of the year.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Snickers Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 3rd How was your day today after feeling sick early in the race? “It started out a little bit rough, but I had a great car, man. I can’t thank these guys enough and Joe Gibbs Racing. They brought me a great piece today. This Snickers Camry was fun to drive, man. It was fast. We led much of the race and had a great time out there. If it would’ve went green the rest of the way we may have had a shot at winning the thing, but had a couple of cautions and it caught Denny (Hamlin) up and caught the rest of the guys up. It was a great race — good racing there and I can’t say congrats enough to the 11 team (Hamlin). They did a great job. They’ve helped us a ton this year and I think we helped them a little bit this weekend. They did a great job at being able to execute and being in the right place at the right time and get the job done today. Overall, wish we would’ve had a one-two, but close enough.”

Would you have preferred to go green at the end of the race? “Yeah, I wish we would’ve, but it doesn’t always happen that way. No big deal. We missed out on one today, but we felt like we had a great race car. It’s the best I’ve ever run here at Michigan so I can’t complain. These guys did a great job, gave me a great piece and had a lot of fun so it was cool to race around there and finding different lanes that your car would work in and be able to race the race track.”

Did you think you had a car that could compete for a race win on the final restart? “We were pretty fast. We just got a good restart and got by a couple of guys right away and then we could run with the 11 (Denny Hamlin) and the 17 (Matt Kenseth), but it would take you about 40 laps in order to work them over. Our car — everybody was so equal for so long that it seemed like ours would prevail about a half a tenth a lap the last 10 laps before pit stops. That’s very, very small and it would just take us that long to get up to the front and pass those guys.”

Did you get bunched up on the final restart? “The second to last one we did. I got out a little bit in front of Matt (Kenseth). I didn’t spin my tires. I accelerated pretty good. I think Matt spun his tires, so I didn’t want to beat him to the line by too much and as soon as I slowed up to not beat him the herd was coming. So, I just had to wait it out and play it out. It wasn’t going to be a great day with that, but we turned it into a pretty good one. We got two tires there on that last restart. We had a good one and drove back up through there. Can’t say enough about Dave Rogers (crew chief) and these guys on this Snickers M&M’s team. They did a great job for me this weekend. And the 11 team (Denny Hamlin) really, really helped us last week. I feel like we helped the 11 a little bit this week and it just goes to show we’re doing something right and we’re able to share information, which is good. Again, proud of the 11 and great to see him in victory lane and beating out the 17 (Kenseth).”

BRIAN VICKERS, No. 83 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team Finishing Position: 10th How was your race? “The race was long. We lost the track there a little bit at the beginning — the third run we got too loose and we didn’t keep up with the race track as it freed up. Then, when we pitted and that caution came out we beat the 18 (Kyle Busch) to the line and per the rule we were supposed to go back around the field before everybody pitted, which we would’ve been able to pit with the leaders, fuel the car and race with the leaders like we were supposed to. But, NASCAR didn’t let us go back around. I don’t understand. I want some clarification on that because they even admitted that we beat them to the line which says we should’ve had to go around before the pit stops. That pretty much screwed us the rest of the race. We were racing at the back of the field, trying to get track position again when we should’ve been racing the leaders.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 Home Depot Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 18th

BOBBY LABONTE, No. 47 RainEater/Advance Auto Parts Toyota Camry, JTG-Daugherty Racing Finishing Position: 22nd

MARTIN TRUEX JR., No. 56 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing Finishing Position: 26th

KASEY KAHNE, No. 4 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team Finishing Position: 28th

DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing Finishing Position: 35th What happened to your race car in today’s race? “I’m not really sure what happened to our Aaron’s Dream Machine today. We had an issue where the engine was cutting out at the end of the straightaway. We took it in and got it fixed, but it made for a very frustrating day. We were looking at a top-15 finish and ended up 35th. That’s not the kind of day that we were hoping for. The team did a good job of getting us back out to pick up as many sports as we could, but we were expecting a better finish today. We’ll just have to try again next week.”
