–5-Hour Energy Pilot Scores Sixth Top-15 in Last Seven Starts–

BROOKLYN, MI (June 18, 2011)-Following a 14th place qualifying effort, Rusty Wallace Racing’s Steve Wallace (No. 66 5-Hour Energy Toyota Camry) battled ever-changing track conditions and potential engine woes, for a 14th place finish in today’s 250-mile NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Michigan International Speedway.

Wallace’s finish marked his sixth top-15 finish in the last seven NNS events and his best career NNS finish at MIS. The effort also allowed him to maintain his eighth-place ranking in the NNS driver standings, expanding his lead over JGR’s Brian Scott to 22 and chopping the gap to seventh-place Kenny Wallace to 26 markers.

“We had a decent 5-Hour Energy Toyota today from a handling perspective,” said Wallace, “The track changed an awful lot and we were off a bit on our last round of adjustments. Our car was just too loose on that last run and it probably cost us a few spots.

“Michigan is a real horsepower racetrack and it definitely showed today. Our biggest problem wasn’t handling; it was that we were getting killed down the straightaways. I went hard as I could, but it was so bad at one point that I almost thought the engine was blowing up.

“The Fords and Chevrolets really have an advantage on us right now from an engine perspective. After today though, I hope that our engine company is going to be working non-stop to get more out of these Toyota powerplants. We’ll even be willing to get them some 5-Hour Energy Extra Strength to help out! If we’re going to contend for wins and top-fives, it’s going to take more steam, especially on these big tracks.”

  • FROM TRAGEDY GROWS TRIUMPH: HOW ONE LOCAL FAMILY FINDS STRENGTH IN THE DEATH OF THEIR DAUGHTER

Baby Siena Gave up Everything to Save her Sister’s Life

Sacramento, California, June 17, 2011 – NASCAR racer Dave Smith and his wife Dorine were excited, and a bit nervous, to welcome identical twin girls. Half-way through a healthy pregnancy, Dorine discovered that one of her daughters was in trouble. On the evening of October 24, 2010, more than 4 months before her due date, Dorine gave birth to Siena and Adrianna at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento.

Siena and Adrianna were born 14 weeks premature, and suffered from a rare condition called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). This condition caused one child to receive more blood and nutrients than needed, while the other received less. In this case, Siena was the baby to receive less blood.

Though Siena and Adrianna had been born sick and premature, doctors had seen no indication of the severity of the girl’s health until Dorine went into early labor.

“I prided myself in obtaining the best of pre-natal care. I received ultrasounds twice a week, had genetic testing, an amniocentesis and constant support from a great group of Sutter OBGYNs. Everything was going great until one day I went into pre-term labor,” said Dorine.

Upon delivery, Dorine had been allowed mere seconds to gaze at her beautiful baby girls before they had been whisked away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sutter Memorial Hospital. From that point on it was a constant struggle for survival. Both babies were born weighing just over 1 pound, and both babies’ skin had been transparent and underdeveloped. The only contact that the Smiths had with their daughters was through the Plexiglas walls of their incubators.

On her second day of life, Adrianna required surgery that would allow her to accept the necessary nutrients she needed to survive. However, on that same day, Siena took a turn for the worst. She suffered a massive hemorrhage in her brain and was not strong enough to endure it. The doctors prepared the Smiths to tell their baby girl goodbye.

“Siena had given her all for her sister, her blood, her nutrients, her strength and now her life. Late that night, we visited Adrianna and told her that Siena had passed away and was now her angel in Heaven. Her tiny hand squeezed my finger hard, as if to say, “Don’t worry Mommy, I’m tough enough to get through this,”’ said Dorine.

And that is what she did. On January 11, 2011 the Smiths were finally able to bring their baby home.

Adrianna, now seven months old, is a healthy and beautiful baby girl. The Smiths will always remember their daughter Siena, and the sacrifice she gave to save her sister; and they know that it was the result of the lifesaving research and support of the March of Dimes that the doctors of Sutter Memorial Hospital were able to save Adrianna.

It is because of the success and necessity of the March of Dimes that the Smith family has decided to give back to their community through this year’s upcoming Be A Hero for Babies Day, an event created by Farmers Insurance to help March of Dimes fund lifesaving research, education and advocacy.

From now until June 29, 2011 the Smiths will be personally fundraising to support the March of Dimes. SNT Motorsports Development Corp will also be donating 15 percent of their NASCAR sponsorship dollars to the March of Dimes to help end premature births and infant mortality.

The NASCAR race featuring this Red Line Oil, Sport Truck RV, Muscle Milk, Byers Leaf Guard, Porter Communications, Freightliner, Red Rocket Auto Tech, Gleemobile.com and Porter Law Group supported car will be held on June 25, 2011 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, and a pair of angel wings will be painted on the race car in memory of Siena.

Franchitti takes 25th IndyCar pole at Milwaukee

Dario Franchitti makes his qualifying lap at Milwaukee Speedway on Saturday.
WEST ALLIS, Wis. – Dario Franchitti’s 25th Indy car pole, tying Paul Tracy for ninth all time, could be the most direct path to retrieving some of the points he lost to IZOD IndyCar Series leader Will Power in last week’s Firestone Twin 275s.

Franchitti, who earned one point for the PEAK Performance Pole Award by topping the 26-driver field with an average speed of 170.841 mph on the Milwaukee Mile oval, is 20 points arrears of Power heading into the Milwaukee 225. Power, who topped the speed chart in the initial practice session June 17, will start a season-low 17th in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car.

“I am glad to be back at the Milwaukee Mile and this is a great place to start from for tomorrow’s race,” said Franchitti, who won the first IZOD IndyCar Series race at the historic track in 2004 by charging from the seventh starting position. “It is going to be a tough day because it is like a one-lane track out there with the marbles on side and the black asphalt lane. I think the double-file restarts will work well here at the Milwaukee Mile and the fans are in for a hell of a show.”

Power’s teammate, Helio Castroneves, will join Franchitti on the front row (169.999 mph) in the No. 3 Guidepoint Systems entry. Scott Dixon, who won the 2009 race from the second row, will be on the inside of Row 2 (169.582) in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car.

The KV Racing Technology-Lotus group of Tony Kanaan, Takuma Sato and E.J.. Viso made waves. They’ll start in that order fourth through sixth.

Esteban Guerrieri set a Firestone Indy Lights track qualify record of 149.005 mph at the Milwaukee Mile to claim the Sunoco Pole Award for the David Hobbs 100 on June 19.

It is the third pole start this season for Guerrieri, driver of the No. 7 Lucas Oil/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car who has been the runner-up the past two races. He also delivered the 40th earned pole for Sam Schmidt Motorsports in Firestone Indy Lights.

Josef Newgarden in the No. 11 Copart/Score Big/Robo-Pong/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car will make his second consecutive front-row start after averaging 148.175 mph over the two laps. He started second and won the Firestone Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 27.

Bryan Clauson, the reigning USAC National Drivers’ Championship title-holder who is making his second Firestone Indy Lights start, will start from the inside of Row 2 in the No. 77 Mazda Road to Indy/Curb Records/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car. He averaged 147.258 mph.

The Noblesville, Ind., driver, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on June 15, also competed in the 100-mile USAC Traxxas Silver Crown race and the 25-mile USAC Mopar National Midget feature later in the day.

Gustavo Yacaman, driving the No. 2 TMR-Tuvacol-Xtreme Coil Drilling car, recorded a season-high fourth starting spot (147.169).

Edwards, Stenhouse Jr. post 1-2 Sweep; Score Roush Fenway’s 21st win at Michigan

Stenhouse reclaims Nationwide Series points lead; Three Roush Fenway Fords finish top five at MIS

BROOKLYN, Mich. (June 18, 2011) – Carl Edwards passed teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. with only nine laps remaining to post the victory in a dominating Roush Fenway effort in Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Michigan International Speedway. On the day, Roush Fenway led 101 of 125 laps, with all three of its Ford Mustangs leading during the event. Stenhouse went on to finish second and Trevor Bayne finished fifth.

“I can remember the first win here (at Michigan),” said team owner Jack Roush. “It only seems like yesterday, but it’s great to win here in Ford’s back yard. Ford gave me my first job out of college and we had all the Ford exposure and the CFO here today. We also have 3,000 Roush Industry folks located in Livonia, Mich. and there were a lot of them here today.”

“I have to thank Fastenal; they have really stepped it up this year and they are a great company to be partnered with,” said Edwards after the race. “Ricky (Stenhouse) drove his heart out – that guy is unbelievable, just and unreal driver. I didn’t think I was going to be able to get him, but it looked like his car got a little tight there at the end.

“I also have to thank Ford,” added Edwards. “We are here in their back yard and it was a huge day for Ford Mustang. It’s very cool to be here in victory lane with a Ford Mustang. I have great sponsors and a great team. This car was very, very fast and I had a lot of fun.”

Edwards and Stenhouse combined to lead 100 laps in the event, as Roush Fenway scored its 21st NASCAR win at its ‘home track’ of Michigan. It was the fifth win for the organization at MIS and the fifth win for Roush Fenway this season in the Nationwide Series. It is Edwards’ third NNS win this season.

The finish marked the third time in the last five NNS races that Roush Fenway has finished one-two. Roush Fenway now holds the points lead in both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series’.

“We just got too tight there at the end,” said Stenhouse. “It was a good one-two finish for Jack and everyone at Roush-Yates Engines. This track definitely needs a motor and we have it. This was a great day for Ford, we wanted a one-two-three finish, but three cars in the top-five and one-two is pretty good.”

“They have definitely picked their game at Roush Fenway Racing,” said Bayne after the race. “Jack (Roush) told me that last year when I came over and he’s keeping his promises, because these things have been pretty much unstoppable. Hopefully we’ll be the one sitting in victory lane soon, but I had a front row seat watching Ricky and Carl battle it out for the win there. We had three cars in the top five and a great team effort by Roush Fenway.”

The win is Roush Fenway’s eighth NASCAR win of the season. They will look for number nine in tomorrow’s Sprint Cup Series race, where the team will look for its 12th win at Michigan in the series. Tomorrow’s race will be televised live on TNT, with the green flag set for 1:00 p.m. EDT.

  • Logano and No. 20 GameStop Team Just Miss a Top-Five En Route to a Sixth-Place Run at Michigan International Speedway

Logano and No. 20 GameStop Team Just Miss a Top-Five En Route to a Sixth-Place Run at Michigan International Speedway

The Race Recap: Joey Logano and the GameStop team had a strong run on Saturday afternoon at Michigan International Speedway, but fell one-spot short of earning their first-career top-five finish at the 2-mile oval. Logano brought the No. 20 GameStop/Cars 2: The Video Game Toyota home in the sixth position following the 250-mile NASCAR Nationwide Series event, his seventh top-10 finish during the 2011 season.

Logano started the day in the ninth position and raced his way up to seventh in the opening laps. A succession of three pit stops over a 20-lap span put Logano and the GameStop team as high as third and as low as 10th, but each time Logano was able to fight back to race his way into the top-five. Logano fought having a loose car for most of the day, but Crew Chief Adam Stevens made a number of positive adjustments and got the car working as good as it had all weekend long by the end of the event. With just 25 laps to go, Logano restarted the race from the fifth-position, but got shuffled to the back in the middle of several three-wide battles. After falling back to 11th, Logano raced his way back to the front over the final 20 laps, passing Mark Martin for sixth coming to the checkered flag.

Joey’s Quotes: “We had a solid day with the GameStop Toyota but unfortunately just missed getting that top-five. This is one track that I’ve struggled with in the past. We’ve always been a top-10 car, but we’ve never quite been a top-five car. Today, at the end of the race, I would say we were a top-five car for sure. That last restart just killed me though. We started on the bottom and a couple of guys got under us and we got stuck in the middle. When that happens, you just lose all momentum and we ended up 11th or 12th. Thankfully though, we had a good enough car at the end that I was able to make those positions back up. We had a great battle with Mark Martin and Elliot Sadler there at the end of the race for sixth, seventh and eighth. I had quite the drag race with Mark and I was able to nip him at the line and get sixth. But I would say our car was better than sixth today.

“I’m really proud of the pit crew and Adam (Stevens). The guys did awesome in the pits. We didn’t lose one spot and we were able to make up a few as the afternoon went on and that is big, especially on tracks like this where track position is so very important. And Adam made some great calls in the pits. At the start of the race, the car was just too loose and I couldn’t get into turn three at all. I would have to back my entry up and I lost a ton of speed in the middle and off. But Adam made adjustments on every stop and every one of them made the car better. By the end of the race, the car was the best it has been all weekend long. I thought we had a shot to maybe get a top-five or even get up there and race those Fords, but I just didn’t have a great restart.

“We are getting better, but we need to find a little more speed in our cars and in all of the Toyotas I think. The Fords just have all of us covered right now. We are gaining on it and we are getting better and better each week. Hopefully here in a few more races, we’ll be running up front and battling for wins. I’m ready to get the 20 car and GameStop back into Victory Lane. We’ve got Kentucky coming up and we’ve got a quite the streak going there. If we can get back into Victory Lane anywhere, it will be there at Kentucky.”

What’s Next: The No. 20 GameStop Toyota and Logano will be back in action in at Kentucky Speedway on Friday night, July 8th. Logano has won the last three NASCAR Nationwide Series events at Kentucky Speedway, all coming from the pole.

Edwards wins the NNS Alliance Truck Parts 250 at Michigan Int’l Speedway

Carl Edwards passed teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. with less than 10 laps remaining in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Alliance Truck Parts 250 at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) in route to his fourth NNS victory of the season.

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”229″][/media-credit]“Ricky Stenhouse is a driving machine and here comes Jack Roush. Jack got us some fuel miles and we couldn’t dare run out of fuel with that Ford Focus out front in the pace car, it is all about fuel mileage today. Jack leaned her down and we didn’t need it, it was great. Mike Beam did a great job with the strategy. I didn’t think I was going to get by Ricky. I cannot drive any harder than that. That was as hard as I could drive to get by him. He is going to be a force to be reckoned with.” Edwards said.

Edwards won by 1.669 seconds over Stenhouse Jr. and the two teammates gave Roush Fenway Racing a 1-2 finish.

Edwards and Stenhouse also combined to lead 100 laps and Roush Fenway scored its 21st NASCAR win at its ‘home track’ of Michigan. It was the fifth win for the organization at MIS and the fifth win for Roush Fenway this season in the Nationwide Series.

“Our Tender Ridge Mustang was really fast for about 15 laps and then we got really tight. On that last restart I just tried to get as far out there as we could and didn’t quite get far enough. We just got too tight. Carl caught us. It was a good day for us. We definitely wanted one more spot. I gave it everything it had, we just got too tight.” Stenhouse Jr. said.

Kyle Busch finished third, pole-sitter Paul Menard fourth and Trevor Bayne finished fifth.

With his second place finish, Stenhouse Jr. took over the series point standings by two over Elliott Sadler.

“I guess that is a good thing for us for sure for the championship but it doesn’t do anything for us not winning. I feel like earlier in the year we gave some wins away, definitely some top-fives. We are right there where we need to be we just have to cap it off.” Stenhouse Jr. said.

I’m proud of my guys at Michael Waltrip Racing, Toyota and Toyota Racing Development. We have really good horsepower under the hood this weekend and my guys did a good job. I just let it wiggle and it cost us just enough.”

Are you happy with your race car for Sunday’s race? “Yeah, we feel like we’re pretty good and we fought a couple different things during practice. We ended up having a good Aaron’s Dream Machine at the end of practice when it counts. Really, really happy with the motor this week. The guys at Toyota Racing Development have done a great job. I’ve complained about motors the better part of the year and they’ve brought a really good piece here so I’m excited to race.”

What are your thoughts about tomorrow’s race? “I feel like we’re okay. I feel like we didn’t unload as well as we needed to, but the guys really did a good job of getting it closer and the car had a poll in it and the driver didn’t. I unfortunately screwed it up a little bit. Nothing would’ve made me happier than to knock him (Kurt Busch) off the pole, but we’re second so we’ll have to deal with that.”

How hard is to get three straight poles on tracks that aren’t similar? “Some guys are really good qualifiers and obviously they’re on to something. You’re right, it’s some pretty different race tracks that he’s (Kurt Busch) has been able to get on the pole at. I don’t know — he just has got it figured out right now I guess. It can go either way. Some guys get on a string and just qualify like crazy and looks like it’s his turn.”

Where did you lose the time that you needed to earn the pole? “About three-quarters of the way through the corner. I put too much wheel to it and let it get loose and bobbled it. I don’t know why I did that. I should’ve wound the wheel through there, right? That’s what’s common. I felt like I cost us and you feel like you cost yourself a poll especially when it’s that close. I’m disappointed — I mean I’m happy that we qualified, but we should’ve been better than that. We should’ve had enough there. And, there’s sometimes when you go out there and you leave it all on the race track and when you come in you’re like, ‘I don’t know what I could’ve done different to go any faster.’ This is just not one of those times, unfortunately.”

BRIAN VICKERS, No. 83 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team Starting Position: 4th How was your qualifying lap? “Thank goodness the sun’s out. I don’t really see any clouds coming, which would definitely change things. The guys on the Red Bull crew did a good job. We tried a bunch of stuff yesterday — some worked, some didn’t — but we settled on a good package. Felt really good about one and two — incredible one and two. Felt good about three and four, just got a little tight off so I didn’t get all the throttle out of it I wanted, but still a good lap.”

BRIAN VICKERS, No. 83 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team (continued) Does the track feel the same to you after missing the races at Michigan last year? “Well, it’s been a while since I’ve been here — it’s been a year. I miss this place. I love Michigan. A beautiful state, especially in the summer — a little cold for me in the winter. It is a gorgeous place and this track is amazing. It’s a lot of fun. I really enjoy coming here. The Red Bull guys did a great job. We tried a lot of different stuff yesterday in practice and some worked and some didn’t but so far so good. Turn one and two was phenomenal, turn three and four was really good as well. I think I got most of it. I got a little tight off of (turn) four.”

KASEY KAHNE, No. 4 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team Starting Position: 8th Are you happy with your race car this weekend? “Yeah, it felt pretty good. We were a little bit loose, but the car went around the track really nice. Just a little bit too loose in the back to go much faster. It was still a pretty good lap for us. Hopefully somewhere close to a top-10 or so.”

Will Kenny Francis be able to make it to the race tomorrow? “It’s a tough spot that he’s in and he’s with his family and things like that. They’ll do whatever is best there. It’s a family deal at this point. If he doesn’t come he’s got this whole group knows exactly how Kenny (Francis, crew chief) does things and we’ll do our best to make him happy. If he comes he comes. I know Red Bull has basically got everything ready for him to come if he wants to and if it works out for him, but it’s totally up to him. It’s up to how his situation is. Racing doesn’t mean a whole lot right now.”

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Starting Position: 10th How was your qualifying lap? “It was good. We’re going to end up better than 29th or wherever we were actually going to go if it rained out so that part is an improvement. Our car had decent speed. It just hurts so bad the later you go in qualifying here so it’s a double-edged sword. You want a fast car, but if you do you’ve got to go towards the end. We made improvements on it. Our car was a little bit loose off of (turn) four, but for the most part I felt like our race runs were just a hair off and so we feel like we can fix that overnight.”

MARTIN TRUEX JR., No. 56 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing Starting Position: 11th How was your qualifying run? “It was okay. Our NAPA Toyota was pretty good yesterday. We didn’t have a lot of speed in it though. We were good on the longer runs and good in race rim, but our qualifying run and our fast laps in practice weren’t real good. I think that was a good pickup for us. It was not going to be where we want it to be, but the guys did a good job changing the car and it’s definitely better just still lacking some speed.”

BOBBY LABONTE, No. 47 RainEater/Advance Auto Parts Toyota Camry, JTG-Daugherty Racing Starting Position: 16th Are you happy with your qualifying lap? “It was way better than yesterday. We couldn’t get it tightened up enough yesterday to make a lap hardly so we had to go out early which might not have been all that bad. It’s still just a decent lap for us. I think we picked up a little bit in some areas obviously but we still need to work on it. The guys did a good job coming back from yesterday. That was the key for today. Kind of a slow day. This is all we’re going to do today so now we just have time to think about what we’re going to do for the race trim. We had a good practice yesterday for that part of it and we’ve just got to tweak on it obviously, but it was definitely better than our qualifying trim was.”

How was your qualifying lap? “It wasn’t too eventful. It was still a little bit too free. Yesterday we were like a ’10’ free and today we’re only like a ‘four’ free so it was better but for whatever reason with our package that we have this weekend we’re still too loose. A way better lap than we had yesterday so we got that out of the way. Our race trim seemed like we had a little bit different spring package and it was better and all of that stuff. All in all, it was a good lap for us.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Snickers Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Starting Position: 24th How was your qualifying lap? “Our Snickers Camry was just a bit free. I knew that we might not have the best qualifying lap, but I feel pretty good about our car in race trim after practice yesterday. This is a place that’s wide and you can pass so we’ll try to work out way to the front. Our car seemed to be pretty good on long runs and this place usually has long green flag runs. I’m hoping that will help us tomorrow.”

JOE NEMECHEK, No. 87 NEMCO Motorsports Toyota Camry, NEMCO Motorsports Starting Position: 29th How was your qualifying lap? “I tell you what, unless you run right by the wall it’s pretty brutal. It definitely adds some character to the track. What’s tough about it is you’re compressing the front end, but the back end isn’t compressed and it just really wears the splitter bad. But I just got to thank my whole crew — we work really hard. Trying to get some good stuff going for us, but just happy to be here and happy to have a good run finally.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 Home Depot Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Starting Position: 30th

MICHAEL MCDOWELL, No. 66 HP Racing LLC Toyota Camry, PRISM Motorsports Starting Position: 38th

CASEY MEARS, No. 13 GEICO Toyota Camry, Germain Racing Starting Position: 39th

MIKE SKINNER, No. 60 Big Red Toyota Camry, Germain Racing Starting Position: DNQ

KURT BUSCH (No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Dodge Charger R/T) Qualified 1st

(Note: Third straight pole for Kurt Busch and fourth straight for Penske Racing and Dodge.) “It’s amazing how it comes down to these thousandths of a second. This was a great run for our Shell/Pennzoil Dodge Charger. A little bit iffy through (Turns) 3 and 4, but we were really good in 1 and 2. It’s been a great week. I played golf with the Shell and Dodge executive earlier in the week. Our car is fast. We just need to figure out 3 and 4.

“This new knockout qualifying is really tough and the fastest guys try and qualify at the end. Each and every one has a shot of knocking you off the pole. I’m really happy for the guys that work on this car. Our R6 engine was awesome. Great decision by Steve (Addington, crew chief) and the team to set the car up and it showed today. We’ll have a great pit stall and in fuel mileage races, that’s really important.”

FOUR POLES IN A ROW: “Incredible. A lot of hard work by everyone on this No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil team. With the way and the direction that I wanted to go and felt what was wrong, to steer the ship in the right direction and see the results is rewarding. Our Dodge is fast. It feels great to find good results now. I think we just got back to basics and the results are showing on the track.”

KURT BUSCH IN THE MEDIA CENTER

“It’s great and an amazing feeling to have three poles in a row. It goes back to the guys and all the hard work, dedication, commitment and most of all, believing in each other. I didn’t realize that we’ve been in the top 10 all year long in points. At one point, there was this feeling of, ‘wow, we’re going to lose this edge if we don’t steer in a different direction’. I’m thankful that everyone was able to pull together and understand that we should just try something different. Whether it was right, wrong or indifferent. It’s great to see the results pop up so soon. I had no idea that we were right around the corner. But, this is a game of thousandths (of a second) and I just saw the 00’s time, he was three-thousandths-of-a-second behind us. I went Pro Stock racing earlier this year in the NHRA and three-thousandths can be the difference between hero and zero and that’s what we have today. We have the pole and I have all my guys to thank for it. A dialed-in Shell/Pennzoil Dodge. It’s been a great week up here in Michigan at the Dodge headquarters, seeing the Chrysler and Mopar folks, SRT group and the Viper guys. It’s just a good family feeling up here in Michigan and it’s good to show results out on the track.”

WOULD YOU BE IN FAVOR OF GIVING POINTS FOR WINNING A POLE? “I’m in no position to speak of that. I think that I’ve been lucky these last three weeks. I think that Ryan Newman was the guy holding that torch a while back where he was definitely pushing to see points for pole positions. It would be nice to see one point for a pole. That’s all you could award with this new (point) system.

“To be on the pole for three weeks, there are so many benefits behind the scenes with picking your pit selection first, with having track position right away. When you get behind on pits stops, you can have a slow pit crew and you have that first pit box, that’s going to help you get out in front of guys throughout the day. There’s a lot of good feeling from sitting on the pole. If I’m a guys sitting on the pole for three weeks, I’d have three more points. Would that change me in points? No it wouldn’t. But it would be nice if you had those banked up towards the end of the season going into Homestead.”

DID YOUR TEAM HAVE A WATERSHED MOMENT FOR THIS TURNAROUND? “This is a first time that we haven’t had a pole without spinning or wrecking our primary car. This was a conventional weekend so to speak. It’s that way because the first few times after the big changes that we made, our car was very different to drive. Basically, it came down to core set-up in the car and it came to the core pieces that we’re bolting on the car. It’s not like we changed chassis design over night, but there are small things that we’ve added there as well. We can see it throughout the garage. Everybody is pushing the envelope in all areas. It’s just not aerodynamics. It’s just not the engine department. It’s not just ride height. Everybody is pushing the envelope every week.”

WHERE DOES THIS RANK FOR YOU TO WIN THREE STRAIGHT POLES? “This is a special accomplishment. It’s nice that we have the confidence in each other right now to know exactly how much air to put in the tires. We were sitting there on pit road the whole time wondering, ‘do we add air? Do we take out air?’ We watched Brad’s run and we were in a panic because we really didn’t know where Brad set his car up exactly. It was cool to call the team engineer on the radio back at the truck, he analyzed Brad’s setup versus ours…even that much more depth…just a quick check of basically one thing that we gauged and we saw that he was quite a bit of percentage tighter than us on that check. If he was that tight and we were set up that loose, we didn’t need to go any looser with our setup. It was nice to have that correlation of watching your teammate go out just a few cars ahead and still make an adjustment in time.”

STEVE ADDINGTON (crew chief, No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Dodge Charger) “What a great job by Kurt (Busch) and all the guys that touch this race car. This is big. To do this in Dodge’s backyard is awesome. I think the track temperature caught everybody by surprise today. We practiced in qualifying trim and didn’t touch it.”

FOUR POLES IN A ROW FOR PENSKE AND DODGE: “Awesome. Just a great job by everyone at Penske and Dodge. Kurt’s been awesome behind the wheel and the results have shown. Now we need to go get a win on Sunday.”

ROBBY GORDON (No. 7 SPEED Energy Dodge Charger R/T) Qualified 37th “The speeds are a lot faster than I thought they would be based on how hot it is right now. I think everyone anticipated that it was going to rain and a bunch of us had our cars set up for a cooler race track; it’s ended up being the hottest day we’ve had so far. We loosened the car up and it was still tight. The track had grip. It’s a good lap for us. We’ll take it and go racing tomorrow.”

BRAD KESELOWSKI (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger R/T) Qualified 41st “Not the lap we were looking for. We’re not where we want to be with the handling of our Miller Lite Dodge. We’re just too tight.”

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN TOMORROW’S RACE? “If you have a good car, you’ll find your way up to the front. This is a big, wide race track that has a lot of grooves. It’s not easy to get it up to the front. But if you’re good, you’re good and you’ll get up there.”

Tune in to TNT to watch the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at 1:00 pm ET on Sunday, June 19th and listen on MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.

REGAN SMITH, NO. 78 FURNITURE ROW CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 5TH: ON HIS QUALIFYING EFFORT: GREAT QUALIFYING EFFORT. HOW IS YOUR CAR FOR THE RACE? “It was a good qualifying effort. We had some work to do yesterday after practice and second practice because I wasn’t very happy with the car. So half the battle is starting near the front so that is the good thing, and we are going to work on our Furniture Row Chevy overnight and make it faster tomorrow in race trim and hopefully we will have something we can contend with tomorrow.”

TONY STEWART, NO. 14 OFFICE DEPOT/MOBIL 1 CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 6TH: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT ON SUNDAY? “We worked through a different package that we haven’t ran before and probably were a little bit behind there in the second (practice) session. I am really proud of Darian (Grubb) and all these guys on the Office Depot/Mobil 1 team. They did a great job with this Chevy. We got pretty close at the end of the session. Got a different direction and having to work through some things, but I think we have a car that is close enough that we can adjust it tomorrow during the race.”

DID YOUR SPEED HERE TODAY COMPARE TO WHAT YOU DID ON TUESDAY (DRIVING LEWIS HAMILTON’S F-1 CAR)? “It was a lot different on Tuesday for sure. But, glad to be back here at MIS, a place that we’ve always liked and had good luck here. It has been a cool week. I got to realize a dream driving an F1 car finally. It was an experience that I’ve never had before. It was cool but I’m glad to be back with the guys. It has been fun to tell everybody about it this weekend and talk about it with the other drivers about how that car drove versus what we drive every week.”

WHY DO YOU DO SO WELL AT MICHIGAN? “I don’t know. I think it is just one of those places. We haven’t won since 2000 here, so it has been a long time. We have just always been fairly solid it seems like. I like it, it is a driver’s track. You can move around and help yourself out. That is what we’ve always liked about it.”

PAUL MENARD, NO. 27 PITTSBURGH PAINTS/MENARDS CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 9TH: ON HIS RUN: “Qualifying is so important that we have put some focus on it the last couple of weeks. Before Kansas we hadn’t qualified were we hoped to. We’ve had good cars. Kansas and Pocono we qualified well. Hopefully this holds up for a good spot. Just so important to have clean air and track position.”

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 39 US ARMY 236 BIRTHDAY/BUD MOORE TRIBUTE CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 13TH: ON HIS QUALIFYING EFFORT: “The way the qualifying, we will just see where this gets us a decent spot. We made some changes with the race car and it definitely felt a little bit better. Still have a lot of things to work on. I got everything I could out of the race car, considering when we went out. It was a little bit free. I am just very proud to represent the US Army have Bud Moore on the race car, that is really special. Bud Moore is a true American hero and he is a NASCAR legend at the same time. It is an honor to represent him and on the weekend of the birthday of the US Army.

WAS THE CAR STILL LOOSE RYAN? “It was a little bit free and the 24 was at least going to be a marker for us just based on the way we have to qualify. Just proud to represent the U.S. Army and Bud Moore this weekend. A true American hero with two bronze stars, four purple hearts and a NASCAR Champion on top of that. We are really proud to represent them and 236 years strong with the U.S. Army. I don’t know what that qualifying lap is going to do for us but we have been working on the car pretty hard here this weekend. And we will change some more things for tomorrow. So just look forward to the opportunity and its one of my favorite race tracks and it’s a first time Father’s Day for both of us, so we’ll see what we can do.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 14TH: ON HIS QUALIFYING EFFORT: “I felt like we left a little bit out there still, but I am pleased with our qualifying effort. I feel like we had a good car yesterday in race trim during practice, so having a top-15 start will hopefully bode well for our team. We have had a string of bad luck the last few weeks, so this is a great place to get our McDonald’s Chevrolet back to where we know we are capable of running. I would really love to have a solid run here being so close to Chevrolet headquarters and give the hometown crowd something to cheer about.”

DALE EARNHARDT, JR., NO. 88 AMP ENERGY/NATIONAL GUARD CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 15TH: ON HIS QUALIFYING EFFORT: “The car was pretty good. I think there is a little bit more in the car. Just under-drove the exit of two just a little bit and got a little bit loose in turn four which cost us maybe a tenth. The car is pretty good. Real happy. I was real happy with how the car was in practice yesterday all day. We should have a good time Sunday.”
