    QUOTES

Carl Edwards on racing at Chicagoland Speedway:

“It is going to be an exciting day of racing with the ARCA cars running and the Nationwide series. It is a short trip from Kansas Speedway so it will be fun to go over there. The race holds a little extra importance because the first race of the Chase is held at Chicago so that will be a little extra time on the race track which will be nice. Mike Beam said we have a fast race car so it should be fun.”

Crew chief Mike Beam on racing at Chicagoland Speedway:

“We are bringing the same car that we won with at Texas. We feel confident that we can take this No. 60 Fastenal Ford back to victory lane. Since Carl will be traveling back and forth between Kansas and Chicago, we will have Brian Ickler help with getting the car set-up. We will make the needed adjustments during the race to get the car to Carl’s liking.”

Clorox is back with Labonte and JTG Daugherty Racing Team at Kansas Speedway

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (June 1, 2011) – – A longstanding team partner of JTG Daugherty Racing, Clorox® launched their first of six primary races at Phoenix International Raceway in February. Clorox returns as a prominent sponsor of Bobby Labonte’s No. 47 Toyota Camry at the 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway tri-oval for the STP 400 on Sunday, June 5th.

During the month of June, Clorox is also the primary sponsor for the 2000 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion at Pocono Raceway (June) and Infineon Raceway, which is considered a home track for The Clorox Company that is headquartered in Oakland, Calif.

“We promoted grilling with Kingsford Charcoal Memorial Day weekend and now we are encouraging fans to use Clorox brands as we race at Kansas Speedway this weekend,” Labonte said. “They are sponsoring our Toyota Camry for three of our four races in the month of June. Clorox has always been a household brand of ours and it’s good to have them on board at Kansas.”

With 10 starts at Kansas Speedway, Labonte’s best finish is 17th twice with Joe Gibbs Racing and Petty Enterprises. Four of those 10 races, he was taken out of contention by the way of accidents. Last season driving for Phoenix Racing, he was faced with a transmission problem (41st). A change of luck is what Labonte hopes is in store to add to his 21 victories, 115 top-fives and 200 top-10 finishes as he competes in the 13th race of the year.

“I have had some tough luck at Kansas, but I do really like the place,” Labonte said. “It’s just one of the neater places that we go to on the circuit. It is very fan-friendly and a great place for fans to watch a race. It has multiple grooves. It’s probably getting close to where it will have to be repaved before too long. There are seams in each grove that makes it slippery. I was watching the most recent Cup race there on TV the other day. Kasey Kahne and a couple of guys got in it and spun around.”

For Kansas, crew chief Frank Kerr and the JTG Daugherty Racing team start fresh with a brand new chassis for the 267-lap event.

“This is a new car for us,” Kerr said. “Kansas is more of a handling track and we have a different tire this time. Last year, we had a great car until we ran into an ignition problem.”

The next several days are extremely busy for Labonte. As a reminder for fans, Labonte’s taking donations at Food Lion, 10102 South Main Street, Archdale, N.C. and loading everything on an Old Dominion Freight Line trailer to help the tornado victims of eastern North Carolina affected by the storms of April 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. ET.

“Thanks to all of our fans in advance, Food Lion and Old Dominion for all their support as we collect items today in Archdale,” Labonte said.

On Thursday, June 2nd, Labonte and David Reutimann are hosting collections for the tornado victims of Joplin, Mo. at the Aaron’s store at 12108 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee Kansasfrom 6-8 p.m. Martin Truex Jr. will do the same 6-8 p.m. at the Bass Pro Shops at 12051 Bass Pro Drive in Olathe Kansas. Michael Waltrip will join Labonte and Reutimann at the Aaron’s store 6-6:45 p.m. before joining Truex from 7:15-8 p.m. at Bass Pro.

Fans can meet, take pictures and collect autographs from the drivers at both sites in return for donations of canned foods, blankets, and toiletry items that will be transported to Joplin on Friday. The first 200 donations at the Olathe Bass Pro Shops will receive a No. 56 diecast racecar while the first 200 donations at the Aaron’s store will receive a nine-inch “Lucky Dog” stuffed animal.

“JTG Daugherty Racing has a great partnership with Michael Waltrip Racing and we’re looking forward to being at the Aaron’s store with David Reutimann to help the folks as much as we can in Joplin, Mo.,” Labonte said. “Michael Waltrip Racing has done a great job in a short amount of time to pull all of this together. We hope to see you there.”

Live coverage of the STP 400 at Kansas Speedway on Sunday begins at 1 p.m. ET on FOX. MRN Radio will also carry the event.

  • Michael Annett Chicago News and Notes

    The Headlines:

Heartland Hockey History: As a former ice hockey defenseman for Team Illinois, Rusty Wallace Racing driver Michael Annett previously called Chicago home during his junior year of high school. Leading the league in penalty minutes, Annett led Team Illinois to the 2002 Calgary Mac’s AAA Hockey Tournament championship before joining the United States Hockey League (USHL) sanctioned Waterloo Blackhawks back in his home state of Iowa where he was part of the Clark Cup championship winning team.

From the Rink to the Racetrack: Now off the ice and behind the wheel of a stock car, Annett will hit Chicagoland Speedway for his third start on the Windy City’s one and a half mile oval. Knocking on the door of the top-10 in the championship point race, Midwest native Annett enters this weekend’s event 11th in point standings, just five markers away from the top-10. Returning to America’s Heartland, Annett will make his 85th career Nationwide Series start in Saturday’s Nationwide Series STP 300 at Chicagoland Speedway.

RWR Crewman Visits Home State: Rusty Wallace Racing’s Brian Gainey, hails from Moline, Illinois. A jackman and underneath mechanic on the No. 62 Pilot Flying J Toyota Camry, the 28-year-old father of two spent the first 24 years of his life in the Prairie State before moving to North Carolina in 2006 to pursue a career in NASCAR. Following in his father’s footsteps, Gainey comes from an open-wheel background where he raced USAC and Silver Crown cars at tracks throughout the Midwest. Now residing in Troutman, North Carolina, he enjoys coaching baseball when he’s not following the Nationwide Series circuit with Rusty Wallace Racing’s No. 62 team.

Homecoming for Hauler Driver: Born and raised in Southside Chicago, Ken Adams drives the No. 62 Pilot Flying J transporter for Rusty Wallace Racing. With his wife as his co-pilot, Ken and Lori Adams are the only husband-wife transporter driver duo in the Nationwide Series. Ken has been a transporter driver in the motorsports industry for 16 years and began his career in the IndyCar Series. He currently leads the points in the Freightliner Truck Driver Challenge, and his next challenge event coincides with the race weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.

DENNY HAMLIN — #11 FEDEX FREIGHT TOYOTA CAMRY

    RACE INFO: Event: STP 400Date/Time: June 5/12 p.m. CT2010 winner: N/A2010 polesitter: N/A Distance: 267 laps/400.5 milesTrack Length: 1.5 milesBanking: 14 degreesTrack Shape: Quad-oval

EXPRESS NOTES: Charlotte Recap: Denny Hamlin and the FedEx Racing team fell one-half lap short on fuel in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, finishing 10th after a gutsy performance by both driver and crew. Hamlin started fourth in the 400-lap event, and ran among the leaders throughout the early portion of the race — leading a total of 24 laps. However, he reported a possible engine issue on Lap 139. As crew chief Mike Ford and the team tried to diagnose possible problems, the #11 FedEx Express Toyota maintained its top-10 position through the race’s midpoint. The team suspected a carburetor issue, and with 100 laps to go, Ford called Hamlin to pit road so the crew could replace the part. The team changed the carburetor in less than 90 seconds, keeping the #11 machine from losing a lap. Hamlin fell to 27th in the running order, but quickly sliced through the field. With differing strategies among teams, Hamlin tried to conserve enough fuel to make it to the finish, but a caution with four laps remaining set up a ‘green-white-checkered’ restart with Hamlin in third. Leader Kasey Kahne ran out of fuel at the green flag, and Hamlin moved into second behind Dale Earnhardt Jr. However, both drivers ran out of gas on the backstretch of the final lap, and the #11 Toyota coasted to the checkered flag in 10th. The finish moved Hamlin up one spot to 12th in the point standings following Charlotte, now 106 points behind leader Carl Edwards after 12 of 26 ‘regular season’ races.

Hamlin Set to Make 200th Start: Hamlin will make his 200th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start Sunday at Kansas Speedway, the site of his very first Cup race. The 30-year-old Virginia native has 16 victories, 62 top-fives and 101 top-10 results in 199 career starts, all with Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin made his debut at Kansas on Oct. 9, 2005, and has made the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship in each of his first five full seasons of Cup competition (2006-2010). Hamlin has made six career Cup starts at the 1.5-mile oval, with a best finish of fifth in 2009 and an average finish of 17.8. This season marks the first time Kansas Speedway will host two Sprint Cup Series events and first time the track will host a ‘regular season’ race.

East Kansas City District Along for the Ride in Kansas: The East Kansas City FedEx Freight district has become one of the largest pickup and delivery operations in the company, and will be recognized with its “EKC” code letters on the b-post of the #11 FedEx Freight Toyota this weekend.

HAMLIN CONVERSATION – KANSAS SPEEDWAY: How do you feel about reaching the 200-start milestone? “It’s pretty cool that my 200th start will come at Kansas, where I made my first start a few years ago. I don’t feel like I’m that old yet, but reaching 200 starts in the Cup Series means that you’ve been around a little bit. I have been fortunate to be in a good car with a good team throughout the years with JGR, and we’ve had some success together.”

Is Kansas a race track you enjoy? “Kansas was the place really where I got my first mile and a half victory in the Nationwide Series.  It’s a very flat track.  We’ve not always hit the perfect setup there in the Cup car before.  It’s a track that I’m glad we are going to twice, especially knowing that it’s a Chase race.  That’s a place where we need to improve.  We’re going to use this time around to hopefully build a setup in which we can be competitive when we go back for the Chase.”

    No. 88 TaxSlayer.com Chevrolet / No. 7 Tissot/GoDaddy.com Chevrolet

    EVENT – STP 300 (200 laps / 300 miles) TRACK – Chicagoland Speedway (1.5-mile tri-oval) DATE – Saturday, June 4, 2011 TV / RADIO – ESPN (coverage begins at 8 p.m. EST) / MRN (broadcast begins at 7:45 p.m. EST)

Aric Almirola No. 88 TaxSlayer.com Chevrolet “I’m interested to see how our first stand-alone weekend at Chicago will go. There are only a handful of Cup regulars on the entry list for this weekend, so this will be another great opportunity for the Nationwide-only drivers to stand out.

“Chicago is unique in the fact that it has that curved back straightaway. We don’t see that anywhere else we go, aside from the dogleg at Phoenix. Typically there a lot of green-flag runs there too, so it could turn into a fuel-mileage race. Clean air is critical at mile-and-a-half tracks like Chicago, even more so with this new car.”

Danica Patrick No. 7 Tissot/GoDaddy.com Chevrolet “I’m looking forward to coming back to NASCAR with Tissot and Go Daddy on board our No. 7 car. Both partners have been great supporters of our program at JR Motorsports. To be able to race at Chicago for a second time in a stock car is exciting, too. I think I’ve made some gains since we were last there. It won’t be easy, but hopefully we can continue to build on our progress from earlier this year.

“Being more familiar with these tracks gives our No. 7 team a much better platform for success. I said last year it was difficult to set goals without knowing what to expect. This year, I think we’ve raised the bar for ourselves a little bit with our performances earlier this season. It’s been a few months since I’ve been in a stock car and I’m excited to get back to it.”

    JR MOTORSPORTS NOTEBOOK –

DANICA’S RETURN – Patrick, a native of Roscoe, Ill., returns to wheel the No. 7 Tissot/GoDaddy.com Chevrolet this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway. It marks her first stock car race since March 19 at Bristol Motor Speedway. In the four stock car races Patrick has entered this season, she has one top-five, one top-10 and three top-20 finishes. Her career-best finish of fourth came at Las Vegas Motor Speedway earlier this year. She finished 24th in her last race at Chicagoland Speedway.

PATRICK’S SCHEDULE – The remainder of Patrick’s schedule looks like this: Daytona International Speedway (July 1), Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Aug. 20), Richmond International Raceway (Sept. 9) and Kansas Speedway (Oct. 8). She’ll also race in the final three races of 2011 at Texas Motor Speedway (Nov. 5), Phoenix International Raceway (Nov. 12) and Homestead-Miami Speedway (Nov. 19).

JRM IN THE WINDY CITY – JR Motorsports has earned a top-10 qualifying effort in four of its eight starts at Chicagoland since 2006. The organization scored one top-five and three top-10 finishes during that time.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Danica Patrick and Josh Wise have shared driving duties in the No. 7 Chevrolet throughout the year, each scoring a top-10 finish. The team occupies 14th position in owner points.

1 MILLION FACEBOOK FANS – JRM co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. became the first NASCAR-regular to surpass the one million fan mark on his Facebook page earlier this week. Earnhardt Jr.’s fan page, which is managed and updated by the staff at JRM, provides daily content including photos, videos, race results, and special offers to fans. Visit Dale Jr.’s page at www.facebook.com/DaleJr.

JRM DRIVER SIGNINGS – Fans have three chances to meet JRM drivers Aric Almirola and Danica Patrick this weekend. Patrick will be signing autographs at her merchandise hauler in the fan concourse area on Saturday, June 4, from 1:00 – 1:30 p.m. CST. Both Patrick and Almirola will sign at the Nationwide Series autograph session from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. CST. Finally, Almirola will sign at the JR Nation merchandise hauler from 2:30 – 3 p.m. CST.

Gaughan & Crew Looking Ahead to Kansas Racing with No. 62 Tundra

    ·         Gaughan drives the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra

    ·         He is an 8-time winner in the Truck Series

    ·         He holds two NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Championship Titles

    ·         Gaughan won in the GT class in the Rolex 24 at Daytona this year

    ·         Gaughan has 7 NCWTS races at Kansas and a top-10 finish in each NASCAR national series

Mooresville, N.C. (June 1, 2011) – NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Brendan Gaughan is no stranger to Kansas Speedway. He’s scored top-ten finishes in each of NASCAR’s three national series and has seven Truck Series starts under his belt at the 1.5-mile track. Gaughan is looking to see the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra back in form as it was in Charlotte last week, but in Kansas, he and his crew want the finish to match their performance level.

“Our Toyota Tundra was really good at Charlotte. I think our mile and a half stuff is really going in the right direction. We’ll take what we learned from Charlotte and go to Kansas and see what we can do. I’ve said it from the get-go, this is part of the season where I think Germain Racing can win and I feel we can win at Kansas,” said Gaughan.

Gaughan gets to visit with some Kansas troops before racing—something which is dear to him and his teammates.

“On Thursday I’m going over to Fort Riley with Justin Lofton to do some troop appreciation which is a huge deal to me and Germain Racing. There are a lot of bases in the area, a lot of military personnel. Even though Memorial Day has passed, it’s still a great opportunity to hang out with the troops and show some appreciation for all they do for all of us,” said Gaughan, who can often be spotted wearing hats from troop members he meets.

Kansas is perfectly suited to Gaughan, according to the Las Vegas native.

“Kansas is different from the Texas and Charlotte types of tracks where drivers like to work the higher groove. Everyone is nervous to go high at Kansas, which means there will be less people in my preferred groove, so that will help me get by people,” smiled Gaughan.

Watch Gaughan in the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra on Saturday, June 4th, at Kansas Speedway on SPEED. Practice coverage airs at 12:30 and 3:00 PM Eastern on Friday, June 3rd, with qualifying at 10:30 AM on Saturday morning and racing action at 2:00 PM ET, preceded by the NCWTS Setup at 1:30 PM. NOTES FROM THE NASCAR NATION: NASCAR STOOD TALL DURING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

[media-credit id=38 align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]The previous Memorial Day weekend was a time for Americans to reflect on those who have served in our country’s Armed Forces in the past as well as those men and women who are defending our quality of life in the present.

The weekend was also about quality motorsports. Sunday morning began with Formula One Racing’s classic Grand Prix of Monaco. It was followed by the Indy Racing League’s 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. The high powered weekend concluded with NASCAR’s annual running of the Coca Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

For the past several years NASCAR has made it a point to recognize, honor and thank our Armed Forces during their events. However last weekend NASCAR, its drivers, teams, sponsors and the Charlotte Motor Speedway really stood tall during Memorial Day weekend.

That fact was evident just moments before the start of the Coca Cola 600 when the field was given the command to start their engines, with a great deal of gusto, from Master Sergeant William “Spanky” Gibson. A double tour veteran of Iraq, for the United States Marine Corp, Gibson has been recognized as being the first service member to return to the front lines despite the fact that he lost his leg above the knee.

In May of 2006 Gibson was on patrol, with his unit in Ramadi-Iraq, when they came under sniper fire. He took a bullet in his left knee but still continued to return fire despite the pain of his serious injury. Upon his return to his home country the news was not good: the injury simply could not be repaired and his left leg had to be replaced with a prosthetic device.

However Gibson was not ready to say “I quit” yet. He vowed that someday he would rejoin a Marine unit and return to battle. The first thing he had to do was learn to walk again during the course of some intense physical therapy. Once he mastered walking, he taught himself how to run, ski and swim. When Gibson successfully competed in the rugged Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon, that when the Marines realized he was serious and they granted him a return stint to serve in Iraq. He later returned stateside and now works at the Pentagon.

This amazing story led to Gibson being invited by the Charlotte Motor Speedway to participate in Sunday’s pre race ceremony. Flanked by his parents, along with John Falkenbury, President of the North Carolina Chapter of the USO, Gibson led a highly charged “gentlemen start your engines.”

His dad, William Gibson Senior, really enjoyed the moment. This gentleman, a Vietnam veteran, was also celebrating his 71st birthday.

    *************

The Charlotte Motor Speedway also arranged to have the American Veterans Travelling Tribute’s Cost Of Freedom display in their fan zone during the Coca Cola 600 weekend. The center piece of this display was The Travelling Wall, an 80 percent scale version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall located in Washington DC. The wall lists the names of every American casualty from the war just like the original. The speedway also hosted a special ceremony at the wall that honored Congressional Medal Of Honor Recipients.

    **********

A very special U.S. flag flew over the Charlotte Motor Speedway during their May race weeks. This flag came from Camp Dwyer in Afghanistan, a military base and airfield manned by the Marine Corp. This flag flew at the base in honor of “The CMS Pit Crew”, a group of Charlotte Motor Speedway employees who engage in community outreach projects to “help people get back on track.” The CMS Pit Crew supports 55 members of the Marine Corps’ Air Control Squadron Two, Bravo Detachment, in Afghanistan by sending them needed personal items from home. One of the recipients of these special packages is Marine Cpl Terry McKee Jr, the son of Susan McKee the Human Resources Manager at the Speedway.

    ************

The Charlotte weekend also saw the presence of the “Troops To The Tracks” initiative, a collaboration between NASCAR and the Armed Forces Foundation. This special organization recognizes and hosts Armed Forces members at NASCAR races through out the year. “Troops To The Tracks” provides over 100 wounded service members, or service members in jobs that are particularly emotional and physically demanding, an opportunity to get away from he challenges they face each day with an exclusive, VIP-style, NASCAR race day experience. Last weekend the program, and the speedway, played host to members from the U.S. Army’s Special Operations Command headquartered at Fort Bragg-North Carolina.

    ************

In support of of First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr Jill Biden’s “Joining Forces” initiative, launched last April, NASCAR and Walmart joined forces and recently produced a public service announcement, (PSA), to be featured on the in store networks of 500 plus Walmart stores. Produced by the NASCAR Media Group, the PSA features drivers Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne and Parker Kligerman along with the First Lady. The PSA calls on race fans and store customers to recognized the needs of our military families. Viewers are directed to www.joiningforces.gov for information. The PSA made its official debut during Memorial Day weekend and will continue to run throughout the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

    *************

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ drivers, teams and sponsors also stood tall in support of our troops over the previous Memorial Day weekend. Tommy Baldwin Racing, who fields the #36 Chevrolet for driver Dave Blaney, joined their primary sponsor, Golden Corral Restaurants, in support of the Disabled American Veterans, (DAV).

Golden Corral has a long standing relationship with the DAV. Every November they host Military Appreciation Monday, held on the Monday following Veterans Day. The program features a free “thank you meal” to anyone who has served in the U.S. military. Golden Corral also collects donations for the DAV through November. Last year the restaurant chain served 375,000 free meals and collected approximately $1 million in donations. In the ten year history of the program they have treated 2.9 million veterans to dinner and collected over $5 million for the DAV.

    ************

During last Sunday’s Coca Cola 600, Jimmie Johnson’s #48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet had a special paint scheme promoting Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores, the team’s primary sponsor, and their “Summer Salute Program.” The program encourages race fans to salute our troops by visiting www.LowesRacing.com/Summer Salute.

Throughout the summer the Hendrick Motorsports cars driven by Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr will run special promotions thanking soldiers who put their lives on line for America.

    *************

Michael Waltrip Racing, and their #00 Toyota driven by David Reutimann, threw their support behind the Armed Forces Foundation. Their message encouraged race fans to text AFF to 50555 from any cell phone to make a $5 donation to the Armed Forces Foundation. This group is dedicated to the needs of active duty, retired personnel, National Guard, reserve components and their loved ones.

    *************

Richard Childress Racing’s #29 Chevrolet, driven by Coca Cola 600 winner Kevin Harvick, supported their sponsor last Sunday by promoting the Budweiser “Here’s To The Heroes” campaign which benefits the Folds Of Honor Foundation. This organization provides post-secondary scholarships for families of U.S. military personnel killed or disabled while serving their country.

Budweiser is also using their professional ties with baseball to support this worthy cause. They will be donating $100 for every home run hit during the 2011 Major League Baseball season to the Folds Of Honor Foundation. There’s also plans to donate a portion of their retail sales, during the weeks leading up to the Fourth of July, in an effort to raise $2 million for the foundation.

    **************

While NASCAR spent last weekend honoring our troops, the Armed Forces spent this past Friday night honoring NASCAR. That happened on board the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York where NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France was in attendance to accept the 2011 Intrepid Salute Award in recognition of NASCAR’s support of the military, business achievements and important philanthropic activities. France joined George Bodenheimer, President of ESPN Inc and ABC Sports, in being the first two sports personalities to be bestowed with the honor since the award program was founded in 1992.

In accepting the award France said “it’s an honor to accept this award on behalf of NASCAR , our drivers, teams and tracks who have all been ardent supporters of active and retired members of our nation’s Armed Forces since our sport’s inception. Accepting this award will be especially humbling knowing that U.S. service men and women from around the world tune into NASCAR races each week as a respite from their ongoing service to our country. NASCAR has a long history of supporting active troops and veterans and we remain particularly proud to be a lead partner in recruiting young people into the Armed Forces.”

    **************

While having special days set aside, such as Memorial and Veterans Day, to honor our nation’s service men and women are very appropriate, we really don’t have to wait for a special date on the calendar to say thank you to them. NASCAR and their race teams performs this valuable service every weekend.

The next time you encounter a member of our Armed Forces in uniform, on any given day of the year, just walk up to them and thank them for their service. You might be surprised how special that simple gesture will make you feel.

Bryan Silas Built Tough Heading Back To Kansas Speedway

KANSAS CITY, Kansas (June 1, 2011) – – Fresh off of a commendable 19th place finish in the most recent NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) contest at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, Bryan Silas will return to the series for a second straight race looking to strengthen his presence on the track in Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway.

The Stuart, Florida native will return to the seat of the No. 99 CollegeComplete.com Ford F-150 for Chase Mattioli Racing aiming for his 15th career start and second at the 1.5-mile oval.

Now, armed in the hands of friend and crew chief Cal Boprey, Silas has a firm agenda heading into the eighth race of the season and it involves taking his blue oval to the front.

For most of his racing career, Silas, 23 has been a member of the Ford Racing family and while the manufacturer has had great success in NASCAR’s third-tier series, its familiar icon has been missing at the front of the pack thus far in 2011. However, Silas and his crew are hoping to change that when the green flag drops this weekend.

“Ford has been very good to me and my racing career,” said Silas, who in addition to running in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is also competing in the ARCA Racing Series and USARacing Pro Cup Series.

“I think we proved a lot at Charlotte. We were able to come from the back and find ourselves racing competitively in the top-20 when the checkered flag flew. The run gave the team some much needed momentum heading to Kansas Speedway this weekend. Not only are we looking forward to having a good run for CollegeComplete.com, but it also would be amazing to put our Ford F-150 in the lead pack and mount a solid finish for them too.”

The O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 is set for Saturday, June 4 and will air live on SPEED beginning at 2:00 p.m. Eastern. The race will also be broadcasted through the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (satellite channel 90).

  • Toyota NASCAR Notes & Quotes Kansas – Chicagoland June 2011

Toyota NASCAR Notes & Quotes Kansas – Chicagoland June 2011

TOYOTA NASCAR NOTES & QUOTES Week of May 30 – June 5, 2011

TOYOTA TIDBITS TOYOTA TOP-10s:  Camry drivers Joey Logano(third), David Reutimann(ninth) and Denny Hamlin(10th) recorded top-10 results in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

It marked the fourth consecutive points race where three Camry drivers have finished together in the top-10, and the sixth time overall in 2011.

Hamlin was contending for a top-five finish after replacing a carburetor mid-race, but his Camry ran out of fuel on the final lap.  Kasey Kahne took the lead on the final restart after opting not to pit during the final caution, however his No. 4 Red Bull Camry also ran out of fuel and he finished 22nd.

Toyota drivers combined to lead 108 (of 402) laps during the 600-mile event, including Busch (55 laps), Kahne (28), Hamlin (24) and Casey Mears (one).

NNS RACE REWIND:  Busch was the first Camry driver to the finish line with a third-place result in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Charlotte.  It marked the seventh top-three finish for Busch in 11 series starts this season.

The 26-year-old Las Vegas native will not compete at Chicagoland Speedway this weekend, but instead will wait a few weeks before attempting to tie Mark Martin’s all-time NNS win record of 49.  He currently has 48 career NNS wins in 213 starts.  Steve Wallace (seventh) and Brian Scott (eighth) also posted top-10 finishes in Saturday’s 300-mile race at Charlotte.   Scott’s eighth-place result was a season-best finish.

CONTINUING ON TO KANSAS:  The NSCS will travel to Kansas Speedway for the first of two races this season.  Camry drivers have won races at 18 of the 22 facilities on the 2011 NSCS schedule, however Kansas is one of only four tracks where Camry racers have not crossed the finish line first.  Other NSCS tracks where Camry drivers are still looking to visit victory lane include California’s Auto Club Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway.

CAMRY AT CHICAGOLAND:  Toyota NNS drivers will compete in the first of two races at Chicagoland Speedway this weekend.  Toyota drivers have recorded three victories at Chicagoland.  Busch has two wins at the 1.5-mile race track (2008 and 2010) and Logano has one triumph in 2009.  Last year, Camry drivers swept the top five positions for the first time at Chicagoland — Busch (first), Logano (second), Scott (third), Reutimann (fourth) and Jason Leffler (fifth).

WINNING WAYS:  The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) will also compete at Kansas Speedway this weekend.  Tundra drivers have won six of the first seven NCWTS events this season, with five of those wins coming from Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM).  Busch has won four times (Phoenix, Nashville, Dover and Charlotte), Kahne earned one win in a KBM Tundra at Darlington, and Michael Waltrip won the season-opening race at Daytona with Vision Aviation Racing.  Tundra drivers have earned 86 total wins since joining series competition in 2004, including two wins at Kansas Speedway with Todd Bodine (July 2005) and most recently Mike Skinner (April 2009).

NOTES, QUOTES & NUMBERS NASCARSprintCupSeries(NSCS):  Since the start of the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for two victories, 12 top-five results, 27 top-10 finishes and have led 1,335 laps … After 12 races, Kyle Busch is fifth in the NSCS point standings, trailing leader Carl Edwards by 53 points … Denny Hamlin (12th) and Kasey Kahne (19th) are also in the top-20 in the standings … Hamlin has earned three top-10 finishes in the last four races to move up five spots into the top-12 in points … Hamlin will make his 200th career NSCS start this weekend at Kansas … Michael Waltrip Racing will collect donations for tornado victims of Joplin, Mo., at two locations in the Kansas City area Thursday evening from 6-8 PM CT … Bobby Labonte and David Reutimann, along with No. 00 and No. 47 team members, will host collections at the Aaron’s store in Shawnee, Kan. … Martin Truex Jr. and the No. 56 team will do the same at the Bass Pro Shop in Olathe, Kan. … Fans that make donations will be able to meet, take pictures and collect autographs from the drivers and crew members at both locations … Michael Waltrip will also stop by both events.

DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing How similar is the Kansas track to Chicagoland Speedway, where you won the NSCS race last year? “They say in theory — they look the same and there’s a lot of things that resemble.  They drive like completely different race tracks other than the fact that they are both a mile-and-a-half.  You can take setups that are somewhat similar, but it’s unrealistic to think that you can unload with the same stuff that you ran well with at one track and have it transfer over.   There are some things that transfer over, but you just have to fine tune each setup to each individual race track.”

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Freight Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Is Kansas a race track you enjoy? “Kansas was the place really where I got my first mile-and-a-half victory in the Nationwide Series.  It’s a very flat track.   We’ve not always hit the perfect setup there in the Cup car before.  It’s a track that I’m glad we were going to twice, especially knowing that it’s a Chase race.  That’s a place where we need to improve.  We’re going to use this time around to hopefully build a setup in which we can be competitive when we go back for the Chase.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 Home Depot Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing What are the challenges of racing at Kansas? “Kansas is an interesting race track.  It’s one of those places, kind of like California, where seams (in the track) affect the car a lot through the turns and all.  It’s a good race track.  I’ve been really good there in a Nationwide car the previous two times.   The Cup car — we’ve haven’t been up to where we would want to be yet.  We’re trying to find a little bit more speed there.   It’s a good race track and I enjoy it.  You move around and can go about anywhere you want so that’s cool.”

MARTIN TRUEX JR., No. 56 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing What are you doing with your team to help tornado victims in Joplin, Missouri? “Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in Joplin, Missouri.  To see the aftermath of the tornado is just devastating.  It breaks my heart to see what happened and what all those folks continue to go through just to get back on their feet.  All of Michael Waltrip Racing’s partners are getting involved to help out.  NAPA and Bass Pro Shops have teamed up and I will be heading with my crew to Olathe, Kansas, on Thursday night.      We’ll be at the Bass Pro Shops store.  For the first 200 people who stop by and make a donation — whether it is items like canned food, toiletries or money, whatever they can bring — I will personally autograph a No. 56 NAPA die cast.  I’m also going to auction off my firesuit, racing gloves, shoes and the hood of my NAPA Toyota from the Kansas Speedway race to help raise money.  I encourage fans that cannot come out and see us to go to NASCAR.com/unites to place a bid or find out how they can help.”   N

ASCAR Nationwide Series(NNS):  Since the start of the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for six wins, 17 top- five results, 33 top-10 finishes and have led 1,114 laps … Kenny Wallace (seventh) is the top Toyota driver in the NNS point standings … Steve Wallace (eighth), Brian Scott (ninth), Michael Annett (11th ) and Joe Nemechek (12th) are also in the top-15 in the standings… Kelly Bires will make his second start in the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 Camry Saturday at Chicagoland … Ken Adams, transport driver of the No. 62 team, is originally from the Southside of Chicago, and shares driving duties with his wife Lori as the only husband-wife driving team on the circuit.

BRIAN SCOTT, No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Are you looking forward to racing at Chicagoland after earning a top-five there last year? “Chicago treated me really well there last year.  I’m looking forward to going back and going back with the (Joe) Gibbs (Racing) organization.  With these new cars, it will be a little different around there, but I’m confident that we’ll have good speed off the trailer and we’ll make improvements on it during the practice.  Hopefully, have a good race like we had last year and get another top-five.”

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series(NCWTS):  Since the start of the 2011 NCWTS season, Tundra drivers have registered six wins, 12 top-five results, 20 top-10 finishes and have led 614 laps … Timothy Peters (sixth), Max Papis (10th), Todd Bodine (11th), Brendan Gaughan (12th) and David Starr (14th) are currently in the top-15 in the point standings … Kyle Busch has recorded wins in three consecutive NCWTS races (Nashville, Dover, Charlotte) … Peters will assist with the Harvesters’ BackSnack program at New Stanley Elementary in Kansas City on Thursday, where he will hand out backpacks filled with food to underprivileged youth … Germain Racing teammates Bodine, Gaughan and Justin Lofton will visit soldiers at Fort Riley in Northeast Kansas on Thursday … They will spend the day meeting soldiers and signing autographs … Lofton will run a special paint scheme on the hood of his No. 77 Tundra at Kansas to honor soldiers at Fort Riley.

TIMOTHY PETERS, No. 17 Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing Do you enjoy racing at Kansas Speedway? “Last year we had a really good run going.  We had been in the top-five all day, but a mechanical issue late in the race ha d us on and off of pit road.  I’m not sure why Kansas has been such a hard track for me to wrap my arms around.  I feel really confident heading into this weekend’s race.  I feel like we have a good package and will run really well.”

BRENDAN GAUGHAN, No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Toyota Tundra, Germain Racing Are you looking forward to racing at Kansas Speedway? “Kansas is a track where I’ve always run well.  It’s one of those tracks that originally everyone called a ‘cookie cutter’ track, but those are the tracks where I do well.  Kansas is different from the Texas and Charlotte types of tracks where drivers like to work the higher groove.  Everyone is nervous to go high at Kansas, which means there will be less people in my preferred groove.  I’ve said it from the get-go — this is part of the season where I think Germain Racing can win and I feel we can win at Kansas.”
