Greg Biffle Daytona Notes and Quotes

Biffle on Daytona: “I’ve always liked the night race at Daytona. My first ever Sprint Cup win was this race in 2003 so it’s definitely a race on the schedule that means something to me and that I look forward to. Racing at Daytona under the lights adds a little extra excitement I think for both the drivers and the fans. We could definitely use a good finish and we need to avoid a bad finish at all costs. We’re getting a little too close to the Chase to have many more bad races. We had a decent run with this car earlier this year at Talladega because we were able to work well with Carl. If we can pair up with Carl or another good drafting partner this weekend, we should do well.”

Erwin on Daytona: “We’re taking the car that we finished seventh with at Talladega earlier this year. Greg and Carl worked really well together to stay out of trouble and finish up front in that race and we hope to be able to do the same thing this weekend. We’re taking these weeks one race at a time and just focusing on running well and being in contention for a win at the finish. That’s what we’ll do this weekend and hopefully it will work out the way we hope.”

    Daytona Notes

    QUOTES

Trevor Bayne on racing at Daytona International Speedway: “I have been looking forward to getting back to Daytona since the 500. That was a special weekend and it still seems like it was all a dream. I have had a lot of ups and downs since that weekend, but I believe I am stronger mentally and physically this time around. I think we have proved this year that our Fords have just as much, if not more speed than the fastest cars on the race track, and that makes us a contender every week. Daytona is a special place where memories are made and I would like to create more great memories this weekend.”

Crew chief Chris Andrews on racing at Daytona International Speedway: “We are taking our Talladega car to Daytona that will be very fast right off the truck. Trevor has brought a lot of excitement and energy to our sport and it is refreshing to see someone so eager to compete at the highest level all the time. He is a true competitor that doesn’t want to settle for anything other than excellence. We feel like one got away the last time at Daytona, so we are going to do everything in our power to close the deal. If we can survive until the end, I believe we have a great shot to win the race.”

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

    Daytona International Speedway

CORNELIUS, N.C. – No. 00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota driver David Reutimann heads back to Daytona International Speedway this weekend – his home track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit. As Reutimann returns to his home state he also gets to catch up on the progress of his Reutimann Racing dirt modified team. David’s father, Buzzie Reutimann, 70, is enjoying a successful season that has seen his Aaron’s Dream Machine go to victory lane twice at East Bay Raceway and finished no worse than third in the season.

    REUTIMANN QUOTES

HOW HAS YOUR SEASON GONE AS A TEAM OWNER: “My season as a team owner is going a lot better than it is as a driver. (David’s father) Buzzie (Reutimann) has raced five or six races so far this year and he has two wins. The worst he’s finished all year is third I think. I wish I were off to a good of a start as Buzzie.”

DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST RACE YOU EVER WON? “I was 14 years old and it was at the Florida State Fairgrounds circa 1984. I was driving a mini-stock – a Pontiac Sunbird hatchback. I can’t remember specifically who I beat for the win – everybody I guess, but I don’t remember who came in second. I remember it was a mid-season championship that paid $200 to win, actually it may have been $400 to win, aside from the normal pay out. That was a lot of money! Or so I thought. I had raced go-karts and stuff before that, but that was my first win in a car.”

WHAT IS DIFFERENT AT DAYTONA DURING A NIGHT RACE? “Night races are just cool! The way the lighting is and the way that everything stands out. For the fans you can see if there are any sparks coming off the cars and things like that. I think it just brings a whole new feel to the race. Night racing is cool. I enjoy it. Daytona is a cool place under the lights. It almost takes you back to when you were running short track stuff only it’s obviously the furthest thing from a short track.”

DO YOU THINK DRIVERS GET MORE AGGRESSIVE AT NIGHT? “I don’t know. I think that drivers are aggressive no matter what the situation is. I think guys may get after it a little harder at night. Either that or it just feels that way some times. I think by nature racecar drivers are aggressive or maybe just really competitive when we get behind the wheel. We all just want to win.”

Kids Allowed in Pits at Atlanta Motor Speedway Due To New 2011 NASCAR Pit Road Policy

HAMPTON, Ga. (June 28, 2011) – For years, family and NASCAR have been synonymous with one another. This year, children can do more than watch the cars from the grandstands, they can get close enough to touch them.

Prior to the AdvoCare 500 on September 4, children of all ages have access to the pits via a new rule NASCAR instituted in 2011. With the purchase of a Sunday pre-race pit pass, kids will get to watch crew members prepare their racing machines and pit areas prior to 500 miles of racing on the high banks of the historic 1.54-mile speedway.

As always, children ages 14 and up can purchase pit access on Friday and Saturday.

Spectators with pre-race pit passes are allowed in the pit area until an hour prior to the start of each race on Labor Day Weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Pit passes are $125 for the weekend of $100 for Sunday only.

Another change this year is a relaxed dress code on pit road. Fans that plan to purchase pre-race pit passes can now wear shorts, open-toed shoes, sleeveless shirts, skirts and dresses on pit road all weekend long.

“This new policy opens up a great new opportunity to enhance the race day experience for fans of all ages,” said AMS President Ed Clark. “The chance to get up close to where the race action plays out later in the night provides icing to the cake for fans in attendance at the AdvoCare 500 weekend.”

Atlanta Motor Speedway is offering great value to fans of all ages on Labor Day Weekend. Children 12 and under can gain free admission to Friday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Atlanta 200 and Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series Great Clips 300 with an adult ticket. Students can purchase AdvoCare 500 tickets for $19, with a valid student I.D.

TEAM CHEVY IN THE GARAGE AT DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY- ALBA COLON, GM RACING NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES PROGRAM MANAGER: “Team Chevy is looking forward to being back at Daytona International Speedway, and there is nothing quite like celebrating the July 4th weekend at this beloved race track! It is always a great show for the fans and a lot of fun. For the drivers, anything can happen that is out of their control, so it’s one of those races they all fear in some way.

“With the new point system in place this season, and with 16 races in the books and 10 more to go before the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup begins, every point counts more than ever now. And the competition is tighter and better than ever before. All the drivers are either looking for their first win of the season; or adding additional wins to their race wins column, or just making sure they are in the top-10 in the standings. Drivers will leave the 2.5-mile superspeedway feeling relieved and lucky if they escape the ‘big one’ at Daytona and get a decent finish with the valuable points attached.

“We expect to see a similar kind of superspeedway racing with the new two-car-style drafting that we saw earlier this year at the Daytona 500 and at Talladega. We will also have roughly the same racing package that we had at Talladega, but with a few tweaks. This time it will be under the lights though, and racing at night always adds an extra element of excitement.

“When we were at Daytona in February, I don’t think the results showed all the hard work put out by our Chevy teams and GM engineers, so we are really looking forward to having another chance to see what we are made of. The key to success at this track is to have the right combination of aerodynamics and speed. And of course, you need to have the right two-car drafting partner and just stay out of trouble”

“It is always important to have the best cars and the best engines in the hands of the best drivers, and we have strength in all those areas plus a strong success record at this track. Team Chevy has won the past two July holiday weekend events at Daytona, and we are looking forward to continuing that trend on Saturday night!”

TEAM CHEVY FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT AT DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY:

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 29 BUDWEISER CHEVROLET – 2ND IN STANDINGS: “I think as a team we have a set strategy that we’re going to go into that race (Daytona) and see how it works. Whether that’s right or wrong, I don’t know. We’ve talked about it for a couple weeks now and have a good plan. The racing would be the same way that it is now if the race tracks – the worst thing in the world that happens to this sport is repaving race tracks. That is the absolute worst thing you can do to make the racing bad is to pave a race track. You look at some of the race tracks that have been paved for five or six years now and I don’t know if it’s the type of asphalt or whatever they’re doing, but the racing isn’t the same that it was and the race tracks just don’t get bad. Basically, if Daytona and Talladega would have been paved like they are now, however many years ago and everybody would have figured out how to do – that car would have done what we do now, it’s just that there’s enough grip on the race track with the way that the asphalt is to allow you to do that. There’s really no way to fix it as far as I’m concerned. Unless you just say, go back to the no bump-drafting in the corners. That’s the only way you can really fix it until the grip goes away. Paving the race tracks are a killer for the racing.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S/SUMMER SALUTE CHEVROLET – 3RD IN STANDINGS: “I think we have more options as competitors (than at the Daytona 500) to make passes for the lead or to work your way through traffic and play some strategy and different things there. I feel as a group we’re all smarter and will be a more competitive race with the push draft, but I don’t see any reason why we’d be in a big pack. Until we have to lift and we can’t run nose to tail, I don’t see us getting away from what we’re doing. Certainly it’s been a year now since it’s been repaved. Maybe there’s a little bit of a loss in grip. If it was a day race, I think you might not be able to push each other around, but the fact that it’s still a night race, I think when the race comes, we’ll be pushing.”

DALE EARNHARDT JR., NO. 88 NATIONAL GUARD HERITAGE/AMP ENERGY CHEVROLET – 7TH IN STANDINGS: “We’ve got a fast car. We sat on the pole there (Daytona) in February. We rebuilt that car and we’re taking it back. And I’m sure it’ll be great. I’m sure it will race really well. It looks like you’re just going to have to team-up with a guy and work with him all day long and try to stay out of wrecks and push him to the lead or get pushed to the lead you know, I don’t know. It’s all going to come down to circumstances. I don’t enjoy the two-car draft because when I push somebody I can’t see around him. And I would like to be in control of my own destiny all the time; be in control and be able to win the race. I was happy to push Jimmie (Johnson) to the win but in a perfect world, me and him both would rather just be racing our own cars and not have to worry about being obligated to push anyone to the win. You want to drive your own car across the finish line and that’s the way it ought to be. I think I learned more at Talladega. We ran okay at Daytona but it’s just circumstances. I thought it was a lottery five years ago (but) good Lord, it’s ridiculous now.”

CLINT BOWYER, NO. 33 CHEERIOS/HAMBURGER HELPER CHEVROLET – 8TH IN STANDINGS: “I think my radio box is a little more advanced (than at the Daytona 500). It’s a little more easier to navigate. I can find my teammates. I think it even has a really cool light on it that lights up whose numbers they are so they’ve worked on it really hard. Other than that, just making sure you bring the fastest bullet to the race track. That’s all you can do. We were good there obviously in the 500, we were good at Talladega, I mean missed it by inches. This is a great opportunity for us to capitalize hopefully and get our first win of the season. It’s time. We need to do that. Obviously for the Chase and everything that happens with these crazy wildcard for the last two I’m telling you there are 15 teams that are plenty capable and have been in the Chase. That’s the thing; if you look at the top-15 teams they’ve all been in there and should be in there. But you’re just going to have to do a better job than the rest and beat them out of it.”

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 PEPSIMAX CHEVROLET – 9TH IN STANDINGS: “Just the bump drafting. That you can push all the way around the race track now. I think when we go back to Daytona; it will be about the temperature, the track and whether the grip has gone away at all and whether we can still do that. I’m expecting – right now I’m expecting us to be able to do that so it’s going to be about finding a partner, a drafting partner to work with and me and Mark (Martin) obviously worked well together at Talladega so we’ll have to look at maybe going that same route for Daytona. You know it’s not really about whether you have an opinion or like it, it’s just the way it is. If you want to be good and have a shot at winning, then you have to learn how to do it well. You have to learn how to cool the engine and you’ve got to find somebody that you can stick with and they can stick with you all day to be there at the end to win the race.”

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 39 BASS PRO SHOPS/NRA CHEVROLET – 10TH IN STANDINGS: “I look forward to coming back there; and getting a little more experience from Daytona and Talladega, I’m sure our teams are going to be more competitive than they ever have been at that type of racing. It’s going to be hot. It will be interesting to see how much grip there is in the race car after this spring and if we still have to run wide open or if we have to lift at all. The racing itself, I wouldn’t say is my favorite kind of racing, but I do prefer it more over the old style of drafting, I guess you could say, that we have always done there. It’s nice to have an impact as a driver on the abilities of tandem racing, but I would rather be racing side-by-side, three-wide or four-wide or running wide open and having my car do the work than something else pushing me.”

TONY STEWART, NO. 14 BURGER KING CHEVROLET – 12TH IN STANDINGS: “Well, you just know you’re going to be partnered-up all day. I think it’s a bigger challenge for the crew chiefs going into Daytona next week, trying to figure out how to keep the cars cool and try to keep from the swapping down to a minimum and try to figure out how you can stay in line longer without having to do that exchange.”

MARK MARTIN, NO. 5 CARQUEST/GODADDY.COM CHEVROLET – 14TH IN STANDINGS: “I can honestly say that I like this style of racing way better than those big 35-car packs that we used to race in. There is just so much more that goes into this. It’s finding the right partner; finding which is better pushing. There’s got to be so much trust there. And then your spotters have to be working together and, most likely, one of them will do all the work for both teams. It’s tough. It’s mentally tough. That’s one of the reasons I like it so much. There is a huge challenge that goes into this style of racing that we don’t typically see every weekend. I know it’s a lot to get used to, but I love it. I’m looking forward to getting back out there and working with Jeff (Gordon) again.”

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET – 16TH IN STANDINGS: “I think the easiest thing with the hotter conditions and the bump drafting there (at Daytona); if people were spinning around when we had 60 or 70 degrees track temperature, it’s going to be quite a challenge with the hotter conditions. It’s going to be interesting how people will approach the race. Because at the end of the race it’s going to be two-by-two-by-two with everybody pushing. The question is if you’re going to do it all night. Yeah, I think it’s better (two-car drafting) because you can make something happen. You know when you are three-wide before at Daytona and you were fourth row you were stuck. Now with it this way you can pass people, you can make something happen. I think that is great for the sport. When we were running in the second group going into the last lap and we left the door open for Carl (Edwards) on the bottom and I think we should have closed that door a little bit earlier. A lot of it goes on the lead guy. When you are pushing you go where the guy goes. So I think that was the harder thing.”

PAUL MENARD, NO. 27 QUAKER STATE/MENARDS CHEVROLET – 17TH IN STANDINGS: “I think you are going to see a repeat of the (Daytona) 500 as far as the two-car drafts are concerned. It’s going to be hotter, but the track has so much grip that it won’t really matter. There will still be two-car break-a ways and we’ll manage that the best we can. I am definitely looking forward to returning with power that the ECR (Earnhardt-Childress Racing) engines give us. I like it (two-car drafting) a lot better than I like the pack drafting. There’s a lot more control in the driver’s hands. Restrictor-plate racing still isn’t my favorite type of racing. It is a total crapshoot once you’re out there.”

JEFF BURTON, NO. 31 CATERPILLAR CHEVROLET – 24TH IN STANDINGS: “I feel really good about our (restrictor) plate program. We led a lot of laps at those races this year. You have to approach Daytona much more like Talladega now. I think that will be the same for the Coke Zero 400. I don’t see any possible way that the track has lost enough grip that you wouldn’t approach it like a Talladega race. You’re going to expect a lot more bump drafting and a lot of the two-car break-a-ways. I’m really comfortable with it (the two-car drafting style). I like it a lot. I don’t have any issue with it. It’s difficult to see when you’re the guy pushing. There are a lot of challenges and some of it gets your attention. We adapted to that pretty quickly. We worked real hard at it practicing for the (Daytona) 500. By the time the race came around, I feel like we had adapted to it pretty well. I’m pretty comfortable with it. Well, you literally can’t see (when pushing someone at 200 mph). The only thing that you can see is if you’re approaching turn one and you look out of the side window, you can see the middle of (turns) one and two. But, you can’t see anything in front of you. You have no idea what you’re catching. You’re totally committed to that guy in front of you. He’s communicating with you – telling you what’s going on. You’re committed to your spotter. It’s truly blind racing.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S CHEVROLET – 27TH IN STANDINGS: “Daytona is always a fun place for me and of course after 2010, it is really special. I am looking forward to another restrictor plate race from the standpoint that we had a good car in both Daytona and Talladega, but came up short in the end. We were down a cylinder with only a handful of laps to go at Daytona in February and couldn’t work together with our teammate and drafting partner Juan Pablo Montoya, to help push for a solid finish. Of course we are going to see more of the same two-car draft tandems. That makes for a interesting race, because the car in the back of the tandem really has to trust the spotter and anticipate the moves from the front car in order to get around. We will plan to pair up with our teammate (Juan Pablo Montoya) and stick together and hopefully have some luck go our way to be a factor at the end of the race.”

REGAN SMITH, NO. 78 FURNITURE ROW RACING CHEVROLET – 28TH IN STANDINGS:”I enjoy the road courses, but the comfort zone for our Furniture Row Racing team is superspeedway racing and that’s why we’re anxious to get to Daytona for this weekend’s race. We’ve had some success this season and it was all triggered by our strong Daytona Speedweeks performance back in February. We started the season with a second-place finish in the twin qualifying races followed by a seventh-place finish in the Daytona 500. With the ECR (Earnhardt Childress Racing) engines under the hood of our Furniture Row Chevrolet plus our background in superspeedway racing I feel really upbeat about this weekend. We have what it takes to win this race. We came close in the 500, and I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t be contending for the win on Saturday night.”

CHEVY NSCS AT KENTUCKY: Tony Stewart Kentucky Speedway Teleconference Transcript

TONY STEWART, NO. 14 OFFICE DEPOT/MOBIL 1 CHEVROLET, was the guest on a NASCAR/Kentucky Speedway teleconference in advance of the inaugural race at the track, the Quaker State 400 on July 9, 2011. Full transcript:

    AN INTERVIEW WITH TONY STEWART:

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE SIGNIFICANCE WILL BE TO BRING THE CUP SERIES TO KENTUCKY?: “Definitely long overdue for sure. Ever since the speedway opened, we all wondered when we were going to have a Cup date there and definitely think it took a lot longer than all of us anticipated. Just the tri-state area there has such deep racing roots with dirt track racing and pavement racing. It’s a perfect market, it’s a perfect area and the race fans that go there are true diehard race fans.”

WHAT IS THE INTENSITY WHEN HEADING TO A NEW TRACK?: “I’m excited about going to Kentucky. I like going to new places that we don’t have history at. Obviously, there’s a lot of drivers that have run the Nationwide Series there and do know the track and what to look for. It’s kind of fun for a lot of us. None of us have raced there that don’t run the Nationwide Series on a regular basis. Even though at some point over the last seven or eight years, we’ve tested there, none of us have raced there. That kind of makes it fun. It’s neat to go in there and not have an idea of what to expect. It always makes it fun the first time.”

ARE YOU FRUSTRATED AFTER LAST WEEKEND?: “I don’t really fee that frustrated anymore about it. I pretty much stood my ground and I’m still not happy about the outcome obviously, but I kind of knew that was potentially what could happen out of it because of what happened earlier in the race. It’s like I said, I don’t race guys that way and I’m not going to let anybody else race us that way – it’s doesn’t matter who it is.”

DO YOU THINK THERE WILL BE A LOT OF TONY STEWART FANS AT KENTUCKY AND WHAT WOULD IT MEAN TO WIN THE FIRST CUP RACE AT KENTUCKY?: “We definitely are going to have a lot of our friends and family that are coming down. I know we’re going to have those fans there. We’ve got a lot of followers with our dirt tracks racing and pavement races. The market is really good for us fan base wise. There’s only one first race and you can only win it once.”

WHAT IS THE PROCESS WHEN YOU RACE A TRACK FOR THE FIRST TIME?: “The first thing you do is try to figure the line out around the track and when we’ve tested there in the past, we didn’t have a lot of rubber down because there weren’t a lot of cars running a lot of laps. It was a lot harder to really get a gauge on what the line was around there. That’s what you’ll spend the first part of the day on – on Thursday, the practice day. You’ll just work on the line, figuring out your braking points, where you need to be getting back in the gas and at the same time the crew chiefs and the engineers are going to be trying to figure out how to get ride heights where they want it. The standard things that they do every weekend. The drivers are going to have to take a little bit of time in learning the race track. We’ve all had to do it all along the way, but that’s the first thing to do is just literally try to figure out where your reference points are for braking and accelerating for entering the corner.”

WILL THE CUP SERIES COMING TO KENTUCKY HELP THE LOCAL TRACKS IN THE AREA?: “I don’t think so. I don’t think it really matters either way. I think dirt track fans are diehard dirt track fans and to be honest, our race is on the same night that we would race at Eldora. We’re kind of going head to head against it to a certain degree. There’s such a deep fan base of race fans in the area anyway that I think it’s nice to have a race like the Cup Series coming to Kentucky and coming to an area where these race fans have been – their lives and their weekends are engrossed in racing. To have a Cup race there I think is just a nice weekend during the year that we can finally get to race in front of those fans.”

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON JOEY LOGANO’S SUCCESS AT KENTUCKY IN THE NATIONWIDE SERIES?: “It’s definitely been fun to watch because Joey (Logano) was somebody that I was really high on and taking my 20 car when we made our decision to switch organizations. It’s been fun to watch him there. He’s obviously found something in that track that he likes and it matches his driving style. I think he’s somebody that when we go back there next weekend, we’ll definitely be watching for and I’m sure if we get a chance in practice to follow him, we’re going to be trying to figure out what he’s learned that’s made him so successful there. It’s fun. I know it’s going to be a lot of fun for him because he knows that track inside and out and it’s going to be one of those few places that he is going to get a chance to go to where he actually knows more about it than the veterans do.”

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR NOTES FOR A TRACK YOU HAVE NEVER RACED AT?: “Oddly enough all the years that NASCAR’s previous testing policy we were allowed to test anywhere we wanted that the Cup Series didn’t race. It made Kentucky an ideal race track for a lot of the race teams to test at during the season for mile-and-a-half tracks. Oddly enough, even though we’ve never brought the COT car there, there is a lot of track data as far as where the bumps are on the race track, what the corners are like, what the elevation changes are like on the straight always. A lot of these big teams have data on the race track itself and it’s just a matter of now how to apply it to the COT car and even though some of these guys have tested here, none of us have the practical knowledge of what the track conditions will be like during race situations and how racing at night will be different from the test sessions during the day that some of us have had there. It’s not entirely and totally a clean slate, but it is going to be a lot of adjustment going to a new race track like that with a new car.”

IS IT NICE TO GO TO A RACE TRACK THAT PUTS IMPORTANCE INTO THE DRIVER’S ABILITIES AT THE RACE TRACK?: “I look forward to opportunities like this. You always as a driver want to be more in control of your destiny than just relying on what the car is capable of doing. You still have to have a great handling race car to get it done. Tracks that are driver’s tracks and tracks where you can move around a little bit and have the flexibility to help yourself out if your car is not 100 percent the way that you want it. Being able to move around and have that flexibility as a driver is something that we definitely look forward to. It will make that one of the aspects that we’ll be looking for sure.”

DO YOU EXPECT TO HAVE MORE FANS IN THE STANDS AT KENTUCKY?: “I don’t know if we’ll have more. I think you still are going to have fans from the area that are going to pull for their drivers like they always have on the weekends. I don’t think it will be more or less necessarily than what we typically would have. The good thing is that I know there will be a lot of the fans in the stands that are pulling for us that we actually know. That makes it fun being able to race in front of your friends and family and people that we’ve raced against in dirt late models and sprint cars. We know some of those guys are actually going to the race too to see it for the first time. Being able to show them what I do on the weekends that’s different than what we used to race each other against in that type of car will be fun to show them what we do on the weekends every week.”

DOES THIS RACE FEEL LIKE A HOMECOMING?: “It does a little bit. It kind of feels like a home track to me even though we’ve never raced there before. It’s close to home and I’m a southern Indiana guy so the track is not very far from where I grew up and where I currently live there. It is, it’s kind of a home track to us and that’s kind of the feeling we have going into it. You always want to run well at your home tracks. Even though Indy has always been my home track in the past, now having Kentucky Speedway there, it’s as much home to me as Indy is. We’re definitely looking forward to it.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FANS SHOULD EXPECT AT KENTUCKY?: “The good thing is that it’s hard to anticipate who’s going to be really good during the race weekend. Trying to pick four or five guys that you think are potential winners is really going to be hard. There’s going to be guys like Joey Logano that have had really good runs in the Nationwide Series are going to be a favorite. Guys that have typically been favorites at that track will be favorites in the Cup Series versus the guys that are typically favorites on a weekend that haven’t run there yet. It brings more guys into the mix. It’s going to be hard to predict what the finish or outcome will be and who will be your guys that will run in the top-five all day. Just the buzz around the race already. The race fans – friends and family that I’ve talked to that were colleagues or friends that they know are going to the race. Just the atmosphere is going to be awesome. Anytime you can go to a first event at a new venue, just the excitement and the atmosphere is unbelievable. If you’ve never been to a Cup race and you’ve got a chance to go now, I highly recommend it because it’s going to be an experience you’ll enjoy.”

Carl Edwards – NSCS DAYTONA ADVANCE

Team: No. 99 Subway Ford Fusion

    Crew Chief: Bob Osborne

Chassis: RK-677 – last ran at Talladega, finished sixth

Carl Edwards on racing at Daytona International Speedway:

“Daytona is such a different race now with the new surface. It is all about pure speed and partnering up with someone. I know this weekend I don’t want to finish second like I did in the 500. I will be doing everything I can to win this race. The 500 in February was the closest I have been to winning at Daytona in a Cup car and I really, really want to win there. That would be cool.”

Crew chief Bob Osborne on racing at Daytona International Speedway:

“The night race at Daytona is an exciting race. We have the tension of superspeedway racing with the added need for a race car that handles well over a fuel run. A solid run at Daytona will be important to the 99 team. Anything can happen there, but I feel that with smart racing, we’ll be in good shape. We could really use another win for the extra bonus points when the Chase begins, and of course we always want to win.”

    FAST FACTS

    * CARL EDWARDS enters the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway leading the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings by 25 points. In 16 starts this season, Edwards has accumulated one win, nine top-fives and 12 top-10 finishes.

    * FOR THE RECORD…In 13 NSCS starts at DIS, Edwards has achieved four top-five and six top-10 finishes. He has an average start of 17.9 and an average finish of 16.5.

    * ON THE TRACK…The No. 99 will have Subway as the primary sponsor for the second of three races this season. The team will be bringing RK-677 this weekend to Daytona. It is the same car Edwards drove at Talladega in April when he finished sixth.

    * REWIND, DAYTONA JULY 2010… Edwards avoided two late-race accidents in the closing laps of the race which involved a total of 22 cars between the two wrecks. After a green, white, checker finish he brought the car home in one piece in sixth place.
