TEAM QUOTES:
Today, AJ Allmendinger officially clinched a coveted spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup after finishing 13th in the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway in his No. 47 Kingsford Charcoal Chevrolet SS.
“It’s really cool to be able to officially say we have clinched a spot in the Chase,” Allmendinger said. “I thought we had a really good shot, but you never know until it’s official. So, to have that happen is really good. More than anything, I felt like this weekend, we made some gains so that gives us a little excitement going into the next couple of races to see if we can keep getting better. Overall, the last few weeks have been really cool to share with the guys. It was awesome to be able to come here and have a little energy and confidence. To come out of Michigan and show some speed all weekend has been really good for us.”
“I thought the car was really good all day,” Allmendinger continued. “It was just track position. The farther we could get up the race track, I felt like the faster we would be. At the end there, I just couldn’t find a clean spot on a restart and lost a little bit. I thought we could have been a little bit better than where we finished. Some of the cars that finished ahead of us, I thought we were better than, but more than anything it’s more about just learning and I thought we learned a lot in the race.”
In addition to Allmendinger, the following drivers clinched: Aric Almirola, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin (assuming they all attempt to qualify for the remaining three races in the regular season).
Jeff Gordon won the 200-lap event, Kevin Harvick was second, Joey Logano third, Paul Menard fourth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rounded out the top-five.
