Zippy’s Charity Ride Includes Cup Champion Stewart

[media-credit id=22 align=”alignright” width=”205″][/media-credit]In just a couple weeks time the Zippy’s Crusade for Kids Annual Charity Snowmobile Ride will take place in Inlet N.Y.  With over a foot of new snow in the area things are looking up for great riding conditions. Former NASCAR Sprint Cup crew chief Greg Zippadelli and his wife Nan are working hard to make this year’s ride one of the best. “This is our sixth year of doing the ride,” Greg said when asked how long the ride has been happening.  This year’s event is scheduled for Friday and Saturday January 27 & 28. The Zippadeli’s said in a statement, “The 2011 Zippy’s Crusade For Kids event allowed us to donate much needed funds to some great organizations and families, including the Shriners Hospitals for Children, the National Transplant Assistance fund, Motor Racing Outreach and the Children’s Homes of Iredell County.”

The fun part for participants in the event is the extensive list of celebrities that will be participating and the activities already planned. On Friday there’s a meet and greet, mingling and reception on tap. Saturday there’s breakfast (or brunch), then the actual snowmobile ride itself. The plan is for a snowmobile ride broken into groups for everyone that wants to ride sleds in the scenic Adirondack Mountains.  As far as personalities there’s the Zippadelli’s (both Greg and his wife Nan will be there), plus Greg’s younger brother Scott, who was the crew chief for Kenny Wallace in 2011. There’s also Tony Stewart, the 2011 Sprint Cup champion who will be participating as well as his new crew chief Steve Addington and members of the No. 14 Stewart-Hass Sprint Cup car team. Donny Schatz, driver of Tony Stewart Racing’s sprint car team will also be there.

The emcees are also some pretty well known people from the NASCAR  world and include, Steve Post from MRN radio, Wendy Venturinni from SPEED TV (and a Better Half Racer) and Matt Yokum.  All of these personalities have been involved in the Crusade for some time now.

“Zippy’s Crusade for Kids is first and foremost a great cause because of all the lives they have touched with the money raised,” The Postman, Steve Post said. He also noted just how much fun it was to participate saying,  “Beyond that it’s just a great time.”

Post makes no bones about how he feels about this event. He said, “I have made friendships that will last a lifetime at this event, people who have a hobby of snowmobiling are just good people, who love their riding and love having a good time around it. The people in that region absolutely roll out the red carpet and make us feel right at home while there.”

Post said,  “One of the things that amazes me is the way the schedule plays out, race fans will get to spend a lot of time with Tony Stewart, Greg Zipadelli, Steve Addington, Donny Schatz, Matt Yocum and the other crew guys that participate in the ride.”  Post concluded by saying, “This is the one ‘must do’ event on my calendar each year and I can’t wait to get up there for some more fun.”

How did the Zippadelli’s decide that the event should be held in Old Forge N.Y. area? Greg said, “The reason why I do it there is I used to spend a lot of time up there as a younger guy with Mike McLaughlin.” McLaughlin, the former NASCAR Nationwide Series driver and Zippadelli worked together when McLaughlin drove a modified that Zippadelli was a crew member of.  “I met my wife there,” he continued. “It’s a great area. We still have a lot of ties in the area.  We made a lot of friends there. They help and support us with everything they got. In fact, without them we couldn’t get it done. We really call on a lot of our friends up there to help us get this done and they work their guts out getting it done.”

About the event Zippadelli said, “It’s a two day event for sponsors and ticket holders. Friday night is a closed deal, you’ll be able to mingle and hang out with everyone. It’s a real up close and personal experience. You’ll be able to interact with everyone there. We do that on purpose and it’s a reason that people have been coming all six years that we’ve been doing this. I wish you could speak to the folks that go.”

Zippadelli was recently named the competition director of Stewart-Haas Racing a position that wasn’t filled during the past season after they released Bobby Hutchens.    Zippadelli and Stewart won two Sprint Cup championships when Zippadelli was Stewart’s crew chief at Joe Gibbs Racing.

Zippadelli said, “The way I looked at this it’s a great opportunity with a great organization. Tony took a big chance with what he did (leaving Joe Gibbs Racing and starting his own team) and it worked for him by making his move.”  Zippadelli looked at the move as a great opportunity, “For me, it was time to make a change.  Right now I am getting used to everything as we’re real busy getting ready for the test in Daytona in a few weeks.  It’s a great way me for to start working with these guys.”

BREAKING NEWS : NASCAR : Kyle Busch Suspended for Remainder of Texas Race Weekend

[media-credit name=”Brad Keppel” align=”alignright” width=”216″][/media-credit]After an incident that saw Kyle Busch deliberately wreck championship contender and series veteran Ron Hornaday under caution Friday night Kyle Busch has been parked for the remainder of the race weekend at the Texas Motor Speedway.  The  Winstar World Casino 350K NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race was only 14 laps in when the incident occurred.

NASCAR officials met with Busch briefly after the incident and scheduled a meeting for early Saturday morning. After the wreck on Friday which sent Hornaday out of the race Hornaday said furiously, “He pulled my shoulder out. Luckily I had a chiropractor put it back in and I’ll be good. If NASCAR doesn’t do it, I’m going to buy Tommy Baldwin’s  ride and that guy will never finish another race. That’s a promise. … This was a yellow flag, turned when you’re not prepared and your heart is not pumping and all that stuff and then you get turned directly in the fence. So let’s have at it? I can go beat his ass? He lives too close to me. So we’ll see what NASCAR does. If they don’t handle it right, I’ll be at his house Monday morning.”

After the meeting Busch left the NASCAR hauler and went directly to the driver’s motor coach lot with comment.

Michael McDowell replaced Busch in his Sprint Cup car for practice this morning and reports in garage indicated that Denny Hamlin would replace him in the Nationwide Series race today.

Helton said, “Boys Have It had clear line that could be crossed. We saw it last night.”

“done under section 9.12 of the rulebook, that gives NASCAR the authority to react during a race weekend. And following the event and after a good deal of conversation and discussion, NASCAR has decided to maintain that parked position on the driver of the 18 truck for the balance of the weekend.” NASCAR president Mike Helton said.

In a nutshell…… Busch will not race anymore this weekend at Texas.

It not a first for NASCAR, but maybe an eye opener for Busch. Kevin Harvick (2002) and Robby Gordon (2008) have been suspended for Sprint Cup races for actions on the track.

  • Drive to End Hunger Continues in Charlotte

Drive to End Hunger Continues in Charlotte

Speedway Media was present at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte Friday when Jeff Gordon presented the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina with a check for $10,000.  The Food Bank of Metrolina received their $10,000 gift this past spring. This allowed the two food banks to help people in 32 North Carolina counties this year.

[media-credit name=”Brad Keppel ” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]Gordon’s sponsorship by the ARRP’s Drive to End Hunger has been a huge success this season with over $12 million being raised and 3.4 million meals being paid for. The sponsorship has allowed NASCAR fans to help with something that many people were not aware of and that’s the fact that many elder Americans live in poverty and go hungry every day.

Gordon, who has his own, long established children’s foundation liked the program from its onset. He compared the sponsorship to his long established one with DuPont saying, “With DuPont I had to learn the company, learn the product. I had to learn the people and understand what they do. It took years to go through that process. I love them as a company, what they do.”   “With this,” he said. “it didn’t take five minutes. This is a no brainer, this is easy to get behind for me, for me to understand and say lets go to work. Let’s make this happen.” He mentioned other charities that sponsor race cars as well. “It’s a great cause. Plus, the thing I love is the level they want to reach out there. You see many do one race. Or an organization represented on several cars, but it’s a short time basis. For them to do it for the number of races, and basically be a primary sponsor is amazing.”

The one thing that Gordon acknowledged was that he doesn’t have as much time as he would like for his own foundation but with this program its different because it’s a sponsor. “It’s a direct message to the fans on Sunday, on television,” he said. “When we win a race it’s a lot more than winning a race. We’re aware that there’s a cause. It’s already been for me something that never stops being involved.”   “When it comes to the foundation work,” he said. “I’m so limited on my time. I’m going back (to Africa, a trip he took alone earlier this year) with Ingrid and Ella, Leo is too young to do that but, I have made time over the years, but I never have as much time as I would like. With this year I’m still able to do things for the children’s Foundation, but every week I’m able to represent the Drive to End Hunger.”   It was obvious that Gordon has many fans that are older. Before taking time out with the media Gordon spoke with a gentleman who offered him words of encouragement. Gordon was very appreciative of the comments and expressed so.

More information about AARP’s Drive to End Hunger can be found at www.drivetoendhunger.org If you’re going to any of this season’s remaining races there will be displays to allow you to support the program. Pitch in, help out if you can. It is a real problem that we all can easily help with.

  • Tony Stewart Wins Geico 400 Vaults to Second in Points

Tony Stewart Wins Geico 400 Vaults to Second in Points

For a guy who did not think heading into the this race weekend that he had a chance at winning the championship Tony Stewart found himself leaving the Windy City only 7 points behind the new leader, Kevin Harvick. Stewart had enough gas while many of the stronger cars of the day and fellow chase participants were running out on the white flag lap.  Harvick was behind by almost a second and Dale Earnhardt Jr. followed Stewart with Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski rounding out the top five.  Eight of the top ten finishers were chase participants with Clint Bowyer and Mark Martin finishing seventh and ninth respectively.

Defending champion Jimmie Johnson and Kenseth, both who led part of the race today ran out of fuel.

Stewart said, “It is huge; I had a migraine all day yesterday so I am kinda glad we didn’t race. Man, this Office Depot/ Mobil One Chevy was awesome! All of our partners … we have had a rough year so this is a good way to start off the Chase.”

Stewart, who was winless up to today is headed to New Hampshire where he and his teammate had their best showing of the season earlier when they finished 1-2 with Newman taking the checkered flag.  Stewart said, “The way we ran there in the spring, I am real excited about going to New Hampshire.  So I am just excited and proud of everyone on our Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevy team and they did an awesome job all weekend and Darien and these guys made some awesome calls and great pit stops by the crew.  We just had a good day today.”

Stewart’s crew chief Darian Grubb said, “Boy does champagne feel good right now. It’s pretty sweet. It’s the way to start the Chase off, especially with the year we’ve had. We’ve had some really good cars, really fast cars and some bad luck and circumstances that kept us from winning races. To get our first win leading into the Chase feels really good.”

The new points leader and second place finisher Kevin Harvick said,”We worked real hard all weekend trying to be smart.  The car was a bit of a struggle in the middle part of the race but in that last run we were one of the best cars on the track.  My guys had great pit stops and worked really hard trying to get better so I really have to thank those guys for what they got us today and we had a good car and we were just real smart all weekend and did a good job and I am real happy with the team.”

Jeff Gordon ran out of fuel and dug himself a hole dropping from third to eleventh in points. Gordon said, We were just off. We didn’t qualify good. That got us behind right there. It was just one of those days. You know. We had a right front tear apart. We actually got the car halfway decent there at the end. Then it came down to saving fuel and we obviously didn’t save enough fuel.”

Gordon noted that they need to have some improvements saying, “We have to qualify better; we can’t have days like we had today. That’s for sure.”

  • Dillon and RCR Closes in on Truck Championship with Win

Dillon and RCR Closes in on Truck Championship with Win

Richard Childress Racing’s of the No 3 truck of Austin Dillon crew only slid on two tires on the final pit stop and came out ahead of Sprint Cup regular Kevin Harvick who had led the most laps up until that point. Dillon took only two tires under green and while Harvick battled with others for  second place Dillon took off. The win at the Chicagoland Speedway in the Fast Five 225,

[media-credit name=”Bill Gutweiler ” align=”alignright” width=”224″][/media-credit]allowed the 21 year old grandson of Richard Childress to pull within 3 points of the series leader James Buescher who finished in 11th.

“This is the biggest win of my career, I think,” Dillon, said in Victory Lane. “I’ve wanted to beat those guys and everybody asks ‘How do you feel about racing against Cup drivers?’ Every time they ask me the question, I say ‘I love it’ because that proves we can go out there and run with them. It proves we can get to the next level. I’m glad when they come into the series, they are very tough to beat, they are supposed to be, and when you beat them it makes it that much better.”

“I ran up there, racing with Kyle (Busch) and Harvick. Harvick was great all night, but Stockman (Dillon’s crew chief) made the call at the end to put us out on two tires. He knows when I get out front it’s like smelling blood for a shark. When we got out there, we could just take off. The team … they kept gaining spots every time we came on pit road. I love coming on pit road when they’re like that. It’s awesome.”

The win was Dillon’s second of the 2011 season and 4th of his young career. The last four races had been won by Kevin Harvick Incorporated race trucks, a team that announced just this week that they would no longer be fielding trucks in 2012.

Harvick spoke to why he had to take four tires, “On the caution before earlier in the race around lap 85) we didn’t take any tires, so we had about 22 more laps on our tires. When you have a vibration like that, you want to win the race, but in the big picture…and the even bigger picture on Sunday (in the first Chase race) …we don’t need to blow a tire and have something happen. So when it got to the point of shaking bad enough to where I knew something was changing, I just came in and changed four tires. I knew at that point, they (the other drivers including Kyle Busch and Dillon) were going to do the opposite, but we had to change four.”  Harvick led 99 of 150 laps.

Harvick, whose Nationwide Series team will move to RCR next year said, “As a driver you want to win the race, especially with a truck like that, but nine times out of 10 you don’t win ’em on days like that. But in the end, we kept it all in the family.”

Kyle Busch said after the race clearly disappointed, “Yeah, it was the right call to get us the track position.  We just didn’t have the right truck tonight to keep it up front andkeep a fast truck that will hold those guys off.  Just Kyle Busch Motorsports is missing something.”

Trevor Bayne vs. Ricky Stenhouse – Kansas Speedway Edition

NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers in Kansas City to promote Kansas Lottery 300

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Sept. 7, 2011) –Nationwide Series point leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and 2011 Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne came to Kansas Speedway to meet with a few lucky fans today, but the two young drivers who love to compete with one another began their day at Kansas Speedway with a Ricky vs. Trevor punt, pass and kick competition.

After a few warm up tries, Bayne took the early lead with the furthest punt, but Stenhouse threw the longest pass and edged Bayne by kicking the football a couple of feet further to win the overall competition.

Next, Ricky and Trevor participated in a live chat via Kansas Speedway’s Facebook page where they answered questions submitted by fans.

Since college football just kicked off, one fan wanted to know, “What is your favorite college football team?” Bayne, a Knoxville, Tenn. native, predictably answered Tennessee and Stenhouse, who hails from Mississippi, revealed he’s an Ole Miss fan.

Any fans who missed the live chat can still watch it on Kansas Speedway’s Facebook page.

After that, some lucky Kansas Speedway ticketholders had the opportunity to participate in a Q & A with the drivers and take a couple of laps around Kansas Speedway with the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

During the Q&A, fans asked questions that ranged from on-track competition, to whether or not they had tried Kansas City’s famous BBQ yet. Both answered they hadn’t tried it, but now plan to in October after fans encouraged them to try it.

One fan asked, “What is your favorite track to compete at?” Stenhouse replied, “Kansas Speedway, of course!”

Come see Bayne and Stenhouse battle it out once again at Kansas Speedway in the Kansas Lottery 300 on October 8. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting www.kansasspeedway.com or by calling 866.460.RACE(7223).

  • Jeff Gordon Nets Huge Win in Atlanta

Jeff Gordon Nets Huge Win in Atlanta

Jeff Gordon won his 85th Sprint Cup race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway by winning the AdvoCare 500. With the win Gordon becomes takes the third position in all-time wins behind David Pearson (105 wins) and Richard Petty (200 wins).  The race was delayed for two days due to Tropical Storm Lee which caused storms over the area both Sunday and Monday. The race was slowed a couple of times for drizzle including a short red flag but the day belonged to Gordon.

[media-credit name=”NASCAR ” align=”alignright” width=”227″][/media-credit]Although Gordon dominated the race leading a race high 146 laps of the scheduled 325 but had to hold off a hard charger in Jimmie Johnson who closed the gap to under a car length as the laps wound down.  Gordon’s lead over his friend and team mate was over 2 seconds with about 20 laps left but both battled loose race cars and Gordon held him off.  It was an epic battle and Johnson came off turn four trying to catch Gordon almost sideways. Johnson said afterwards, “I’m sure glad I  had some dirt racing experience there because I  sure needed it to survive that. It was fun.”

“I have always liked him as a driver,” said David Pearson, next on Gordon’s march up the wins list. “He is smart, takes care of his equipment and when it is time to go, he gets right up there with them. Reminds me some of the way I drove. … He has been the ‘head honcho’ for a long time in NASCAR. He was good out of the box and has been very good ever since.”

Everyone recognizes how strong they are and you can never count them out, Gordon said in media center afterwards.  “In the last couple weeks we have been in battle with them. I’m excited we we’re on a half mile track last week and led so much and then came here and won.”  Gordon added, “It was so much fun, it was so slick. I have a lot of respect for Jimmie , he’s a five-time champion. We have great cars right now.”  Gordon spoke of how the race unfolded, “All of a sudden with 15 to go it got lose and here he comes.  We’re having a lot of fun right now and we can’t wait for the chase.”

This was the culmination of the Sprint Summer Showdown that had Brad Keselowski, Marcos Ambrose and Paul Menard in a position to win $1 million for themselves,  a fan and the charity of their choice. The closest one was Keselowski who finished 6th. After the race Sprint announced that they would donate $10,000 to each driver’s charity of their choice.

Tony Stewart, fighting for a place in the chase made up 8 seconds at the end of the race finishing in a surprising third place at the end. Stewart was excited with the performance but noted that there was still work that needed to be done.

  • No Surprise, Edwards Wins Great Clips 300

No Surprise, Edwards Wins Great Clips 300

With about 20 laps to go Carl Edwards made the pass for the lead by getting past Kevin Harvick but Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was coming up from behind at the same time making it to fourth by the time his Roush-Fenway team mate was in the lead. Stenhouse closed in a little but could never make it by him.  With less than ten laps remaining Stenhouse was challenged by Kyle Busch for second and got by Stenhouse as Edwards checked out.

Edwards led 101 of the 195 laps on the steamy Atlanta night. It was his sixth Nationwide Series win of 2011. It almost wasn’t to be as Edwards was penalized for taking equipment out of the pit stall when he left with the air gun and hose. However, Edwards was fast and charged to the front.

Edwards said in victory lane, It was a big week for Fastenal with the announcement we made.” He also psoke about a visit to a cancer camp,  “I was inspired by going to the Aflac cancer camp, he said. He then mentioned the racing,  “I’ve got a great team. We raced as hard as we could. It was a blast. We raced hard and we raced clean. I raced with Kyle (Busch), and Kevin (Harvick) and Kasey (Kahne) and it was all good racing.”

Second place finisher Kyle Busch said, “We had a good car, just not good enough. Busch then spoke about their engine package saying,  Hated it that we didn’t have enough under the hood for those Fords.”

The final restart was caused by the wreck that involved team mates Just Allgaier and Reed Sorenson that saw Sorenson get clipped in the left rear by the hard charging Allgaier sending Sorenson up into the side of Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne who was in the  back due to a pit stop after challenging for the win.

Sorenson made it a point to say that he would find Allgaier after the race. Sorenson said, “It’s kind of uncalled for to wreck your teammate. I will find him after the race. It will be between me and him.”  He was clearly upset.  “I feel horrible, you don’t ever want to crash anyone, especially your team mate”, Allgaier said after the race, “No words can describe it, I want to talk to Reed, it was my fault. Took points way from them they didn’t deserve.”

Ricky Stenhouse finished third followed by Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne. There were eight different leaders and six caution periods for 27 laps. The margin of victory was just under.7 of a second.
