    Atlanta Motor Speedway – Did You Know?

    This weekend all three NASCAR series travel to Atlanta Motor Speedway culminating with Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. But did you know that this race will mark a milestone in the series as the 2,500th Cup race?

    The first Cup Series race was run at Charlotte Motor Speedway on June 19, 1949, and was won by Jim Roper in his No. 34 Lincoln in what was then called the “Strictly Stock” series. Glenn Dunaway was originally declared the winner but was disqualified for illegal modifications to the rear springs on his car, giving the victory to Roper.

    This race will be special for another reason as well. Following this weekend’s events, Atlanta Motor Speedway will be repaved for the first time in 20 years. The asphalt track is the second- oldest racing surface on the NASCAR circuit.

    There are currently 23 racetracks on NASCAR’s Cup Series schedule but did you know that the series has competed on 156 different tracks? There have been 234 Coors Light Pole winners and 186 different drivers who have taken the checkered flag among 2,536 competitors who have made starts in the series.

    The first Cup Series race at Atlanta was on July 31, 1960, and was won by Fireball Roberts from the pole position. There have been 43 different winners. Dale Earnhardt leads all drivers with nine wins while Jimmie Johnson leads all active drivers with five. Did you know that Kyle Busch is the youngest Atlanta winner with a victory on March 9, 2008, at 22 years, 10 months and seven days? The oldest driver to win at Atlanta was Morgan Shepherd on March 20, 1993, at 51 years, five months and eight days.

    Starting position is always important but it may surprise you to know that only 14 of the 109 (12.8 percent) Cup races have been won from the pole at Atlanta. The most recent driver to do so was Kasey Kahne in 2006. The fifth starting position, however, has produced more winners with 15, than any other position at Atlanta. Jeff Gordon was the most recent to win from fifth place, in 2011. But starting position isn’t everything. Bobby Labonte won in the fall of 2001 after starting 39th.

    Jimmie Johnson leads the pack heading to Atlanta and is looking for a three-peat. He won this race in 2015 and 2016 and has the best driver rating, 107.1. But Kurt Busch, fresh off his Daytona 500 triumph and the 2016 pole winner, should also be a contender. Did you know that Busch leads all active drivers in laps led at the track with 749? He also has three Atlanta wins and the fifth-best driver rating (95.4).

    With a new format this season that encourages aggressive racing, anything is possible. Did you know that on March 11, 2001, we saw the closest margin of victory since the advent of electronic scoring at Atlanta Motor Speedway when Kevin Harvick won over Jeff Gordon by a MOV of 0.006 seconds?   • NASCAR Racing Schedule for Atlanta

    NASCAR Racing Schedule for Atlanta

    NASCAR heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway with all three series for a full weekend of competition. The NASCAR XFINITY Series (2 p.m.) and the Camping World Truck Series (4:30 p.m.) races will be televised on FS1 Saturday. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 will be broadcast on FOX at 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

    The Cup Series event will be comprised of three stages. Stage 1 and 2 will consist of 85 laps each with a final stage of 155 laps (325 laps total).

    Jimmie Johnson, the defending race winner, has the most victories at Atlanta among active drivers, with five, and swept the 2015-2016 races. He also has the series-best driver rating of 107.1. Daytona 500 champ, Kurt Busch, won the Atlanta pole last year and has three victories at the 1.54-mile track.

    NASCAR’s Steve O’Donnell ‘Pleased’ with First Test of New Format at Daytona

    The 59th running of the Daytona 500, with first-time winner, Kurt Busch, included eight cautions for 40 laps and saw only 15 drivers complete all 200 laps. Was this typical restrictor-plate racing or a result of the new race format that NASCAR implemented this season?

    Steve O’Donnell, executive vice president and chief racing development officer for NASCAR, shared his thoughts on the new format which features stages and addressed the multiple accidents and the five-minute clock which limits the amount of time a team has to make repairs.

    His first impression of the race was, “I’d say, overall really pleased.” He added, “We saw a lot of great, hard racing. Everybody knows that every driver wants to win the Daytona 500. We saw drivers up on the wheel all day long racing hard and that’s exactly what we expected from the format.”

    When asked about the reason for the number of wrecks that plagued all three series this weekend at Daytona International Speedway, his answer was simple.

    “I think people wanted to win,” he said.

    O’Donnell continued, “People want to win (when they) hit Daytona. We wanted drivers racing up front, racing hard for wins. That’s what we expected. In terms of good, hard racing, that’s what you saw all three days.”

    He also thought that the five-minute clock worked well.

    “Obviously that’s going to be a work in progress as we go”, he explained. “It was NASCAR working with the race teams. When you look at the positives of that, no one exceeded that clock on pit road. The winner of the race was part of that policy. So, if you look at a car going beyond five minutes, usually their day’s done anyway. If we had a line of teams here saying we’ve got to do something we would, but we didn’t have one of them. They all knew that their day was done. It’s unfortunate. But that’s Daytona; it’s a tough place to race.”

    O’Donnell went on to discuss the complexities of restrictor-plate racing at Daytona and said that Atlanta Motor Speedway would essentially be their “first experience with the new rules package.”

    “I think Daytona brings out, you never know what’s going to happen. If you make a mistake here, it’s usually a pretty tough one and it’s a pretty tough day. But,” he maintained, “the stages did produce strong racing.”

    He pointed to another favorable aspect of the race at Daytona, stating, “It also gave some drivers who competed in those first stages who normally would have gone home with one or two points; they were rewarded for running up front early.”

    Several drivers also weighed in on their experience with the revised race format, characterizing the race as “wild,” “the extreme of the Daytona 500,” “aggressive” and “fun.”

    Ryan Blaney, who finished second in the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford,  said, “It was one of the more wild 500s I’ve been in, a lot of wrecks that took out a bunch of good cars, which you hate to see. There were only a handful of cars out there that looked OK at the end.”

    AJ Allmendinger, driver of the No. 47 Kroger Clicklist Chevrolet for JTG Daugherty Racing, who finished in third place, shared his perspective.

    “I mean, I think Daytona and Talladega are going to be extreme,” he said, “because, you know, it comes down to trying to get your track position. You see people lay back. Now with the stages, there’s points on the line. I think Daytona is the most amped up. It kind of changes how people race.

    “To me, I don’t think any of the other 32 races that we’re going to go to, we’re all driving as hard as we can every lap anyway. Yeah, you get a caution with eight to go before the stage ends, there’s going to be strategy. Maybe guys on old tires and that might make some difference when it comes to the stages. I think it’s the extreme of the Daytona 500 and these plate races, the way we have to race. Now with stages, with points being on the line, things are going to happen like that.”

    Jimmie Johnson’s race ended on lap 128 in a 17-car accident. He summed it up, saying, “Just a lot of aggression way too early, in my opinion.” His No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy finished in 34th place.

    Dale Earnhardt Jr. who led eight laps in his No. 88 HMS Chevrolet before he was caught up in a wreck and only completed 106 laps and finished 37th, had a different viewpoint.

    “I really enjoyed the whole week; we had a lot of fun. Everybody’s support, to get back to the racetrack, meant a lot to me. Sorry, we weren’t able to deliver a better result today for all our fans.” He concluded by saying, “At least we went out leading the race.”

    While opinions vary, restrictor-plate racing is known for its volatile nature. The true test of the new format may be the upcoming Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway next week.

    Corey LaJoie Races his way into the Daytona 500

    Corey LaJoie made the most of his Monster Energy NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut at Daytona International Speedway, securing a spot in the Daytona 500 in his No. 83 BK Racing Toyota.

    The 25-year-old third generation racer finished 18th in the first CanAm Duel, ahead of Reed Sorenson and Brendan Gaughan, to capture the transfer position that was available for one of these non-charter teams. It was not, however, without controversy.

    On Lap 49, LaJoie made contact with the No. 55 car of Reed Sorenson which then spun into Paul Menard’s No. 27. Sorenson hit the inside retaining wall and was eliminated from the race.

    After the qualifying race, Sorenson was understandably upset.

    “I guess he felt like he did what he had to do to make the race,” he said. “I hope he’s proud of that part of it. There’s a lot of pressure going into making this race. It’s a very big deal for a small team like ours.”

    LaJoie maintains that he didn’t intentionally wreck Sorensen, saying, “I mean, obviously wrecking Reed wasn’t how I drew it up. It certainly wasn’t on purpose. I was just trying to fill a hole. He didn’t think I should be there.”

    But, he was also determined to do whatever it took to make the race,

    “I just had to beat him,” he explained. “I didn’t want to be sipping Margaritas on the beach on Sunday. I wanted to be out there racing. If that was my mom, I’d probably spin her out to make the Daytona 500, too. That’s just frank. I’m not going on Reed’s Christmas card list this year, but that’s all right.”

    To put it into perspective, LaJoie talked about how this opportunity came about and what it means to him.

    “You know, Ron (Devine, BK Racing owner) could have put lots of guys in it, Casey Mears, the list is long for guys he could have put in it,” he said. “Obviously he likes giving young drivers a shot with Matt (DiBenedetto), Alex Bowman, the list goes on.

    “I was politicking very hard. I don’t have a whole lot of starts in any division. I’ve been part-timing in everything.  Limited XFINITY starts, a couple Truck starts, a couple Cup starts.

    “I know I can do it in the right opportunity. I politicked very hard. I didn’t feel like I was making a whole lot of headway with it. I texted Jimmie Johnson.  I said, ‘Hey, I feel like if the seven-time champ comes two weeks removed from the seventh championship makes a text, it could carry some weight.’ He said, ‘Oh, yeah, no problem.’

    “So he called him up, talked for about an hour. Two days later the call came to me.  Hey, this is the call you’ve been waiting for. Let’s go. It’s still only part-time. BK is working hard to try to sell sponsorship to fill more races, but right now all I care about is Sunday.”

    LaJoie might have limited experience by some standards but his talent behind the wheel is undeniable.

    He has six wins in the K&N Pro Series East Series where he finished second in the championship standings in 2012 and was selected as part of the 2012 NASCAR Next Class. LaJoie also has three wins in the ARCA Series and earned two top-10 finishes in 10 starts in the XFINITY Series in 2016.

    And, while some may question his aggressiveness on the track, for LaJoie, this could be the break he’s been waiting for his entire life and he’s not about to waste it.

    Daytona 500 – Did You Know?

    Sunday, Feb. 26 will mark the 59th running of the Daytona 500 but did you know that it has been the season-opener only since 1982? The first “Great American Race” was held in 1959 and won by Lee Petty in his first appearance at the event in his No. 42 Oldsmobile Super 88. He led 38 laps and won by two feet in a photo finish battle with Johnny Beauchamp and Joe Weatherly. Twenty-five years later, his son, Richard Petty, captured his 200th win at Daytona in the Firecracker 400 on July 4, 1984.

    Thirty-seven different drivers have won the Daytona 500 led by Richard Petty with seven victories. He’s followed by Cale Yarborough with four wins. Bobby Allison, Dale Jarrett and Jeff Gordon have won three 500s while Bill Elliott, Sterling Marlin, Michael Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth have won the season-opener two times.

    But did you know that only three drivers have back-to-back wins in this iconic race? Richard Petty did it (1973-74) and so did Yarborough (1983-84). However, Marlin was the last competitor to accomplish this feat (1994 and 1995).

    Thirty years separate the oldest and youngest drivers who have won the 500. Trevor Bayne became the youngest driver (20 years, 0 months, 1 day) on Feb. 20, 2011, when he scored the checkered flag in his first start in the Daytona 500. It was also his first career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory. Bobby Allison won his third Daytona 500 on Feb. 14, 1988, making him the oldest Daytona 500 winner (50 years, 2 months, 11 days).

    It’s often said that it’s not important where you start but rather where you finish. However, when it comes to the Daytona 500, qualifying well is a key factor. Did you know that the pole position has produced more winners (nine) than any other position? In fact, 28 of the 58 Daytona 500s (48.3 percent) have been won from a top-five starting position with a whopping 72.4 percent being won from a top 10 starting position.

    The Daytona 500 is one of the most sought after wins in NASCAR’s premier series, and for good reason. Five drivers who won the 500 went on to become the Cup Series Champion the same year, for a total of 8 championships between them. The list includes Richard Petty (1964,1971,1974), Johnson (2006,2013), Lee Petty (1959), Yarborough (1977) and Jeff Gordon (1997).

    The 59th Daytona 500 will kick off the 2017 season Sunday with television coverage on FOX at 2 p.m. It will also be broadcast on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR radio. The on-track activity begins Thursday, Feb. 23 with  Cup practice at noon on FS1.

    NASCAR Racing Schedule for Daytona 500

    The 2017 season officially begins this weekend as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, XFINITY Series and Camping World Truck Series compete at Daytona International Speedway for the 59th running of the Daytona 500. Please check below for the complete schedule of events.

    Chase Elliott won the pole position this past Sunday during qualifying. He will be joined on the front row by Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. in second place. The remainder of the field will be set Friday, Feb. 23 in the Can-Am Duels. These twin 60-lap races will determine the field as well as the full lineup for the Daytona 500.

    There are 36 Charter teams that are locked into the race, leaving four open spots and six contenders hoping to secure one of those four positions.

    NASCAR’s Future Dependent on a Successful 2017 Season

    As the 2017 NASCAR season approaches, fans can expect to see significant changes both on and off the track.  With Monster Energy leading the way as the new entitlement sponsor coupled with the recent exit of high-profile drivers such as Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards, this year could prove to be a defining moment in the future of NASCAR. Add the recent race format changes into the mix and you have a recipe for either spectacular success or dismal failure.

    The partnership with Monster Energy is an effort by NASCAR to reach a younger demographic and expand its fan base.

    NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France described Monster Energy as “a dynamic brand that reaches different places and different audiences. They are going to do things that are going to be fun. They’re going to be impactful. They’re going to be exciting for our drivers and our teams.”

    It’s a sound theory but NASCAR’s enthusiasm may not be shared by their current fans whose average age is 48 and who are typically resistant to change.

    Steve Phelps, NASCAR executive vice president and chief global sales and marketing officer, however, is convinced that the fans will embrace Monster Energy.

    “We have the good fortune of finding a brand that we believe works for our sport,” Phelps said. “They’re going to bring their lifestyle to their activation. They’re going to bring their brand, their excitement, their energy to this partnership, and the fans are going to be the winners. It’s all about engaging the fans and having the fans have unique, fun experiences whether at the race track or through different mediums, through social, digital, content.”

    Another hurdle that NASCAR faces this year is the loss of Gordon, Stewart and Edwards. Will fans switch their allegiance to a different driver or will they follow these drivers into retirement?

    On the plus side, there is an outstanding rookie class joining the Cup Series this season, including Daniel Suarez, the defending XFINITY Series champion, who will be taking over for Edwards in the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.

    Erik Jones, the 2015 Camping World Truck Series champion, is also moving up to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. He will drive the No. 77 Toyota for Furniture Row Racing. Jones had four wins in the XFINITY Series last year and finished fourth in the year-end standings.

    Ty Dillon will be another rookie to follow as he moves up to the Cup Series in the No. 13 Germain Racing Chevrolet. Dillon finished fifth last year in the XFINITY Series with nine top fives and 17 top 10s.

    One of the biggest obstacles to NASCAR’s success could be the revamped race format that was revealed on January 23 and will be implemented in all three of its national series.

    It was met by favorable responses from most of the drivers, including Dale Earnhardt Jr.

    “I love the fact that the bonus points or the playoff points will carry through the playoffs all the way to the last round,” he said. “So everything you do throughout the season is really going to help you throughout the playoffs. That’s a great change.”

    But the fan response has been mixed, at best. The format changes, which include running the races in three segments with playoff points awarded to the segment winners as well as the overall race winner, are the basis for a playoff structure that seems to get more convoluted each year.

    For many longtime fans, this may be the final straw.

    After missing the last 18 races of the 2016 season while recovering from concussion-like symptoms, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was back on the track Tuesday at Phoenix International Raceway to participate in a two-day test for Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams. It’s the first time he’s been on a track after being medically cleared to race last December following a private test session conducted at Darlington Raceway.

    To say that he has been looking forward to it, may be a slight understatement, as  Earnhardt told the media at PIR, “We were coming here to test and I was just texting the guys (on his team). I’m like, ‘Man, I don’t know why but I’m just freakin’ pumped up about this.’”

    Although he hasn’t been enthusiastic about test sessions in the past, this year is different. After months out of the car, he has a new perspective and Earnhardt is embracing the opportunity.

    “It’s been a while. You know, you miss the camaraderie, the work, the friendships I have with my road crew,” he said. “I think they miss me, so that makes you feel good. They seem excited that we’re working together and we’re back together. So when you get out there and you put laps down, the communication is right there – we’re communicating really good.”

    “But testing, when you’re racing every single week for 20 years and you have a test here and there, it gets kind of boring. I’m not going to lie,” Earnhardt continued. “But you’ve got to understand what your objectives are, try and motivate yourself. Learning everything that you can learn, being an asset to the team. If you’re sitting on your phone and you’re playing around – you need to talk to your crew chief and discuss with him and listen to what they’re talking about. Be a part of the team when you’re here. You lose sight of that at times. You get lazy. So I’m excited. I’m happy that we’re here. The car’s good. We’ll see how it goes.”

    He’s also using this test session to bolster his confidence. While excited to begin the new season, Earnhardt admits to being slightly apprehensive.

    “I’m just a little nervous, you know, about if there will be any kind of learning curve. But I don’t know. I hope there ain’t. Sometimes you see guys in sports – no matter the type of sport – that are away for a while, that have to adjust to how much has changed since they’ve taken time off. There are some guys that come back that never missed a beat. So I don’t know. I hope there’s no rust to shake off. I’m really anxious to kind of get out there and have some success. Get out and run well. Check that box that I am where I need to be.”

    Looking ahead, Earnhardt is encouraged by the gains the team made last year in his absence and is determined to further their success.

    “The great thing is that the team kept working at the end of last year. We have some good progress – almost won here with Alex – so they’re confident in themselves. For me, confidence is a big, big part of it. The fact that the team doesn’t have any lack of confidence in what they’re doing or where they are, is a good thing. Now I just have to build on that confidence level myself and feel like me and the car are working together.”

    Raymond Parks Played Integral Role in Success of NASCAR

    NASCAR Honors its Beginnings with Induction of Raymond Parks into Hall of Fame

    You may think you know how NASCAR began but if you’re not familiar with Raymond Parks, you only know half the story.

    NASCAR took a huge step forward in correcting that misconception by inducting Parks into the NASCAR Hall of Fame Friday evening.

    Parks’ granddaughter, Patricia DePottey, spoke about his career and his decision to leave NASCAR after only four seasons as a team owner.

    “Throughout their lifetime, he always wanted to make sure his family was taken care of and that he was there for them,” she said.

    “He always carried NASCAR with him,” she continued.  “He did tell me one time, we were in a car and we were talking about racing, and I asked him why he left, and his exact words were, ‘Well, it was expensive,’ and he said, ‘I had a family to take care of.’”

    “He physically left, but if you went into his office in the store, he had everything he loved right there,” said DePottey. “He had his trophies. He had his pictures. He had his family surrounding him in the stores. And he had his business.”

    Before his passing in June 2010, Parks was the last living member of the group that gathered in 1947 at the Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach, Florida to form NASCAR.

    While most of the credit for forming NASCAR goes to William “Big Bill” France, it may not have happened at all if not for Raymond Parks and others like him who shared a dream.

    “At the time, I didn’t know what I was getting into,” Parks once said. “I might have had a vision, but I certainly never saw where NASCAR was going. It surpassed anything I imagined. I’m just glad to have been in it at the beginning.”

    Parks was born in Dawsonville, Georgia in 1914 and was the oldest of his father’s 16 children. He left home and moved to Atlanta at the young age of 14 and got into the business of hauling moonshine. Within a couple of years, the teenager owned a service station and ran a network of moonshine distributors.

    Red Vogt owned a garage just down the road from Park’s service station and soon became the mechanic of choice for the bootleggers. More importantly, this was the beginning of a partnership that would make NASCAR history.

    If you really want to know what racing was like before there were corporate sponsors and television cameras, just listen to Raymond Parks.

    “Racing was a lot different back then,” said Parks. “It was really just getting started. I guess Lakewood (near Atlanta) was the first real track that we raced on. There were dozens of other tracks that would spring up in pastures or on farms, with just some fence wire separating the fans from the racing.”

    “Sunday afternoon was a time that most people relaxed. It was normal for those who had fast Fords or other types of moonshine cars to want to get together. They might decide to go out on a highway outside of town and see who had the fastest car.”

    “Other times, they would find some farmer that would let them go out in his pasture. Maybe it was one or two cars, but usually, it was several. And when the cars revved up, the local people would always be there.”

    His entry into racing as a professional team owner came about at the urging of two cousins.

    His cousins, “Lightning” Lloyd Seay and “Rapid” Roy Hall were also in the moonshine business and convinced Parks to finance them in their racing careers.  Parks provided them with quality cars with Red Vogt as his chief mechanic.

    Hall and Seay attained celebrity status and became two of the first stars on the amateur racing circuit. Roy Hall was the subject of the Jim Croce song “Rapid Roy, that Stock Car Boy.” Seay, who was killed in a moonshine dispute in 1941, was a frequent thorn in the side of Georgia lawmen.

    One deputy described Seay as “without a doubt the best automobile driver of this time. He was absolutely fearless and an excellent driver on those dusty, dirt roads. I caught him eight times and had to shoot his tires off every time.”

    Another deputy remembers a night when he stopped Seay for speeding as he headed north for another load of moonshine. Seay handed the deputy two $10 bills. The officer told him, “You know the fine is only $10.” Seay responded by saying, “I’m paying for my return trip later tonight.”

    By the early 1940s, Parks was making a little money with his amateur racers. One of those racers was the future founder of NASCAR, Bill France.

    Just when racing was getting off the ground, World War II broke out. Parks was off to Germany and spent about three years in the service. He participated in the famous Battle of the Bulge where he spent over 100 days in a foxhole.

    Parks survived the war with barely a scratch and soon returned to racing with a new driver, Red Bryon.

    Byron had also been in World War II but was not so lucky. His bomber had been shot down and Byron nearly lost a leg. As a result of the injury, he had to wear a leg brace and an orthopedic boot so driving a car wasn’t easy.

    But with some modifications to the clutch pedal by Red Vogt and a lot of determination, Byron was able to race competitively.

    In December of 1947, France invited all the most successful names in racing to that famous meeting at Daytona Beach where NASCAR was formed. Raymond Parks, Red Vogt and Red Byron were among the participants.

    That meeting was just the first step. Parks continued to play a dominant role by contributing money, cars and advice to France and the fledgling organization.

    The team of Parks, Vogt and Bryon went on to win the first two NASCAR championships ever awarded; the Modified Class in 1948 and the Strictly Stock Grand National Championship in 1949.

    Parks and Vogt continued to find success and later fielded cars for Fonty Flock and Curtis Turner. However, Park’s career as a car owner was short-lived. In the mid-1950s, Parks walked away from NASCAR.

    “It was money, that’s what it was,” Parks said when asked why he had left the sport. “I loved racing, but I had to make a living. My business was doing well, but I was splitting the purses with the drivers and paying all the expenses, including parts, and my money was coming up shorter each week.”

    After Parks left NASCAR, he focused on his other business interests including real estate, service stations, convenience stores and vending machines.

    Parks may have left NASCAR but he never forgot it. He watched it grow from a weekend pastime to the well-oiled machine that it is today.

    Parks once said, “If there’s one thing I regret, it’s the way NASCAR has tried to distance itself from those early drivers. Some of them were as rough as the liquor they hauled, but I always respected them.”

    Shortly before his passing, he contributed memorabilia to the NASCAR Hall of Fame where his accomplishments are immortalized. Although his time in NASCAR was brief, he was instrumental in legitimatizing the sport.

    Dale Earnhardt Sr. once called Parks “the sport’s unsung hero.”

    In 2009, NASCAR historian Buz McKim called Park’s team, “the Hendrick Motorsports of its day.”

    “He always had the best of equipment, McKim continued, “the best drivers and the best mechanics. He always made sure the cars were totally spotless when they came to the track. That’s just the way he did things.”

    NASCAR chairman Brian France acknowledged the contributions of Raymond Parks after his passing.

    “Raymond was instrumental in the creation of NASCAR as a participant in the historic meeting at the Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach,” said France. “Raymond is a giant in the history of NASCAR and will always be remembered for his dedication to NASCAR.”

    Richard Petty summed up Parks’ contributions best, saying, “He set the standard. Mr. Parks brought the sport class. A lot of people looked at that and said, ‘If he can do it, we can do it. We can clean the sport up. We can clean ourselves up.’

    “It took people like Mr. Parks to lay the foundation that we’re still living off of. And without people like him, we wouldn’t have the history we have and we wouldn’t be where we are today.”
