    Smoke Steals One at Martinsville

Tony Stewart won the Tums Fast Relief 500 at the Martinsville Speedway by getting past the leader, Jimmie Johnson on a late restart and leading the final 3 laps. At one point Stewart was about to go a lap down to the leader but fought him off and remained on the lead lap.  Johnson finished second and Jeff Gordon followed in third.

[media-credit name=” Ernie Masche/CIA Photo” align=”alignright” width=”232″][/media-credit]The race was slowed 18 times for caution for well over 100 laps as the Sprint Cup stars decided that they would have a “Boys Ha Have at it” race on the speedway. Gordon, who was involved in the first caution period and required multiple pit stops for repairs to damaged car, made a spectacular come  leading the race through its middle stages.  Gordon said, “That was absolutely crazy.  Great effort, they fixed the nose. I was worried about the brake duct. I beat it up, I drove it hard. The last two runs I didn’t have much for them.  Great effort by Tony Stewart, you got to give him credit I didn’t think he could get by him on the outside.”   Gordon led 114 of the 500 laps but the bonus points for the most laps led went to Kyle Busch who led 125 laps of the race early.

Stewart only led 14 laps and said in victory lane, “I don’t know, I didn’t think anyone could get by Jimmie Johnson on the outside.” He then mentioned that his car wasn’t all that great today, “ I was pretty bad all day. I think I was the only that didn’t get in a wreck with anybody today.  To be honest I wasn’t too happy to be starting second.  Not letting him run me up the race track like he did to the 31 (Jeff Burton on an earlier restart) was important too.”

Many of the chase participants saw trouble on the track. The first caution period saw Gordon with the most damage when Dale Earnhardt Jr. ran into the curb sending Kurt Busch around as well the No. 88 car which saw the No 24 slam into it.

Brian Vickers was involved in no less than 4 cautions before retiring to the garage but the biggest losers of the day were clearly Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch both who were involved in separate incidents that saw them needing repairs for heavy damages.  Busch finished 27th 7 laps down and Kenseth 31st 13 laps down costing both championship points they may not be able to recover.

Carl Edwards remained in first in points by 8 over Tony Stewart despite the fact that he had a lug nut issue on pit road,  was lapped and the “lucky dog” twice so this “felt like a victory for me”.

The one thing that Tony Stewart did was put front runner Carl Edwards on notice, “He better be worried, he’s not going to have an easy three weeks.”

The series heads to Texas next weekend.

  • Hamlin wins the NCWTS Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway

Hamlin wins the NCWTS Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway

Denny Hamlin passed Austin Dillon and Ron Hornaday Jr. with 14 laps to go and won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday.

[media-credit name=”Barry Albert” align=”alignright” width=”243″][/media-credit]Dillon’s car slid up the track coming out of the second turn on the final restart and Hamlin was able to get around Hornaday and Dillion to win his first NCTWS race in 12 starts in the No 18 Traxxas Toyota for Kyle Busch.

“It was great. Those guys, I know they were battling for the championship, so I didn’t want to put them in three -wide at any point, but it was just a gift right there into turns one and two.” Hamlin said.  “I have to thank Kyle (Busch) for letting me drive this truck. This is something that really means a lot to me to get my very first Truck Series victory.”

“We gave it to him. I just didn’t make the first turn and I ran into Ron. If I hadn’t done that it would have been one of us in victory lane. I’ve just got to figure out how to make that first turn better on restarts.” Dillion said.

Hornaday finished second, Dillon third, Johnny Sauter fourth and Joey Coulter finished fifth. James Buescher finished 10th and Dillion now holds a 11 point lead over Buescher in the series standings with two races remaining. Hornaday is 15 points out.

“It was a great day … a pretty cool day for us. Austin raced me pretty hard at the end. I don’t know how Denny snuck through us and stole the win.” Hornaday said.

  • Rain halts track activity at Martinsville Speedway on Friday; Knaus ‘foolish’?

Rain halts track activity at Martinsville Speedway on Friday; Knaus ‘foolish’?

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice had to be cancelled on Friday at Martinsville Speedway due to rain. A practice session is now scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Saturday prior to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series qualifying at 10:40 a.m.

    [media-credit name=”Barry Albert” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]Sprint Cup Series qualifying will take place at 12:10 p.m.

“I’d rather not have no practice today, just as to what the weather looks like tomorrow morning for qualifying, so we will see how that goes, can’t control that part, but we will go out and see how it goes.” Harvick said.

“We love coming here. It’s very typical weather here for this weekend so far. Hopefully, we get on track at some point. If not, I’m sure we’ve got some pretty good notes for this race track.” Hamlin said.

“It seems like the fall race here in Martinsville we get rain one of the three days, so I guess I would rather have it today, then Sunday, but just look forward to the opportunity to get on the racetrack if we do get that lucky today and we will see how things go.” Newman said.

    “Foolish” Talladega Denial

Jimmie Johnson’s crew chief Chad Knaus was recorded telling Johnson at Talladega last week, “If we win this race, you have to crack the back of the car. Got it?” in an apparent attempt to cover post-race inspection if they did not pass.

“Chad (Knaus) explained himself very well this week, and has been more than available to talk though the situation. Everyone is very well aware at the statements he made. The other thing to remember is that car passed inspection multiple times throughout the course of the weekend. At the end of the day, while Chad was trying to protect himself post-race, he made a foolish statement.” Johnson said on Friday at Martinsville Speedway.

“You can tell from my reaction it was something I had never heard in the car from him before, and it is what it is. The car passed tech at the race track multiple times and people have to build faith in that; Chad and I certainly respect NASCAR and their inspection process and unfortunately it happened for really no reason at all and now we have to put it behind us.” Johnson added.

Denny Hamlin added his thoughts on the comment on Friday at Martinsville.

“Everyone is going to push the limit as far as they can. If they felt like they were really close on tolerance. Any kind of damage would help give some kind of explanation to why it was above or below tolerances.” Hamlin said.

  • Harvick visits Virginia Tech

    Harvick visits Virginia Tech

[media-credit name=”Barry Albert” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]Kevin Harvick paid a visit to Virginia Tech, VA on Tuesday and toured the No. 13 ranked Hokies facilities. Harvick also had lunch with several Virginia Tech football players and later sat through their media interviews before a press conference with football coach Frank Beamer.

The Q&A session started of with a simple question to Harvick, “What’s you knowledge of Virginia Tech football?”

“I think for me I have learned a lot about Virginia Tech football today.  To see the facility and everything that goes in, it’s a first class facility with great people to make it go around.” Harvick said.

“There’s a lot of similarities about what it takes to make a race team go around and what makes a football team or any other business for that matter. It takes good people, it takes dedication and it takes determination to do what you have to do. So there are a lot of similarities and I enjoyed my afternoon.” Harvick added.

With the merge of KHI and RCR how much does the free you up for the chase coming up, does it kind of take the load off of your mind knowing that all you have to worry about now is driving?

“I’m glad it’s off my mind. We have been working on it for awhile, myself and Richard (Childress) and I think it’s going to elevate the performance of the Nationwide teams next year.” Harvick said. “For myself and DeLana, its going to allow us to do some things not having to be involved on a day-to-day basis. But we are still going to be heavily involved.”

[media-credit name=”Barry Albert” align=”alignleft” width=”226″][/media-credit]Beamer was asked whom he liked in the Chase, Beamer said “Kevin Harvick!!!!!” but quickly added that he also roots for Virginia drivers, “you have to pull for them a little bit ”.  A person from the media said that there “were not any Virginia drivers in the chase”, Beamer again quickly added, “you have Denny Hamlin!”

Beamer presented Harvick with a No. 29 Hokies jersey with his name on the back. In return, Harvick presented Beamer with a replica helmet.

“We wish Kevin good luck as he starts the chase here and we have a hat for him and then we got a jersey. Its got the right number on it and the right name on it.” Beamer said.

Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell gave Beamer two framed lifetime tickets to Campbell’s presidential suite at the track.

Beamer took time to recall his 15-lap drive around Bristol Motor Speedway with five other celebrities. He started second, but his daughter, Casey, recalled him being passed twice from kicker David Akers. Beamer added that he (Akers) wanted to race cars after his football career is over.

“I noticed a lot of people were going by me. But I was just trying not to run into the wall. So I got through the race and was happy as heck I didn’t run into the wall.” Beamer said.

What does Harvick think of this year’s chase?

“I tell you, with so many different people winning this year, I think it shows how competitive the series is right now. It seems like everybody’s been through a certain period of struggles and I always tell everybody that each Chase takes on its own characteristic, and it will be interesting to see if this is going to be a consistent one, one where you have to win or one where you have to make the best out of your bad days. It will be interesting.” Harvick said.

Harvick enters the chase with four wins, seven top-five and 13 top-10 finishes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Harvick and Budweiser will debut the new Budweiser “Bowtie” can paint scheme for the first race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup at the Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday.

The focal point of the design is Budweiser’s iconic bowtie, complemented by the time-honored Budweiser creed and Anheuser-Busch medallion.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate these two milestones than by creating the special Budweiser bowtie can paint scheme to kickoff the Chase at Chicagoland this weekend.” said Rob McCarthy, vice president, Budweiser.

Richmond International Raceway and Wonderful Pistachios to Pay Tribute to

Military and First Responders During Pre-Race Ceremony   As fans fill the stands at Richmond International Raceway this Saturday night, September 10th, they will be joining in the most patriotic pre-race ceremony ever at America’s Premier Short Track.  To honor America, the pre-race ceremony will begin with a “Salute to America” concert featuring patriotic music performed by police and military bands, as well as an active duty marine.

The evening will be highlighted by Wounded Warriors saying the pledge, Danny Rodriguez, the singing NY police officer, singing God Bless America and the U.S. Army Infantry Division Band performing the National Anthem.   Rounding out the pre-race festivities announced last week, R. Lee Ermey “The Gunny” – a retired U.S. Marine and real-life Drill Instructor – will salute the troops by asking the drivers to start their engines and Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi – a New Jersey resident and daughter of a volunteer New York fireman – will pay tribute to firefighters by passing the flag-waving duties to Frank Siller, founder of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation whose brother, Stephen Siller, lost his life on September 11th, 2001.  Ermey and Polizzi are part of the Wonderful Pistachios advertising campaign.   Fans will be handed 4” x 6” American flags as they enter the stands and are encouraged to wave them in tribute to America during the concert, God Bless America and National Anthem.

In addition, fans attending the event, ABC-TV and MRN Radio broadcasters announcing the race, and the track announcer, will all go quiet for a three-lap moment of silence from laps 9 through 11 at the ¾-mile oval.

The three-lap moment of silence, in which all fans attending the race are again encouraged to wave their American flags, is the culmination of many 9/11 tributes and patriotic activities being planned by NASCAR race tracks, teams, sponsors, licensees, drivers, and fans in special recognition of the anniversary.

This patriotic pre-race will serve as the “opening ceremonies” for the Wonderful Pistachios 400 “One Last Race to Make The Chase” NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.  When the checkered flag flies Saturday night, September 10, the field will be set for the 2011 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.  Tickets for Saturday’s event to be a part of the most patriotic pre-race ever start at $45 in advance and can be purchased online at www.rir.com or by calling 866-455-7223.

Keselowski wins the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway

Brad Keselowski held off Martin Truex Jr. on Saturday night to win the Sprint Cup Series Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”244″][/media-credit]“An awesome car, an awesome team! Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt won this race. It’s a race of champions. There are races that pay more, that are races that might have a little more prestige, but this is the coolest damn one of them all.” Keselowski said.

This was Keselowski’s third win of the season and now sits in the 11th position, the no. 1 wild card spot, in the series standings. His three wins should be enough to secure him a spot in the “Chase”.

Keselowski also closes out the list of qualified finalists who can earn a $3 million payout in the Sprint Summer Showdown presented by HTC EVO™ 3D.   If Keselowski can also win the AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, he will win $1 million for himself, $1 million for his designated charity and $1 million dollars for two lucky race fans.

Jeff Gordon finished third, Jimmie Johnson fourth and Jamie McMurray finished fifth.

Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards now have clinched spots in the “Chase”.

Edwards finished ninth, but more importantly, he is in the chase.

“That was a lot of work. Lots of work for a ninth place. That is a tough race right there.” Edwards said. “We had good pit stops and good strategy and we locked into the Chase, which is huge. That’s the first mission of the season and we accomplished that and we are looking forward to Atlanta.”

Kenseth led 110 laps en route to a sixth-place finish and clinched his chase berth.

“That is great. My guys have been doing a great job this year and it feels good to clinch that spot. I wish we were running just a hair better but they did a great job.” Kenseth said.

Gordon dominated most of the race and led 206 laps but got behind during the final pit stop.  He had to battle back from the fifth spot. Gordon got back to third place but was unable to make the pass on Truex Jr. for second.

“Oh, it was an incredible battle. I know that there wasn’t much of a race up there for first when Brad (Keselowski) got out there with those four tires and got clear of us, but me and Martin and Matt Kenseth and Jimmie (Johnson); we were having a heck of a battle back there. But I’m really, really proud of this race team tonight. What an awesome race car this Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet was. I think we made some huge improvements from the last time we were here. It felt like we had the car to beat; but you know what, we just didn’t get the position that we needed to on that last pit stop.” Gordon said.

Mark Martin’s had a strong car early on, but his night went bad on lap 360. Martin got into Brian Vickers and spun into the wall. Heavy damage sent him to the pits for extended repairs. Martin finished 38th.

On lap 413, Kyle Busch tried to make it 3-wide and came out the looser. Busch and Terry Labonte get together, causing right side damage on Busch’s car. Busch also got into the outside wall. Busch finished 14th and was not a factor in the race.

Kyle Busch and Johnson are now tied for the lead in the standings by 32 over Kenseth.

50 for Busch at Bristol; All-time winningest driver in Nationwide Series

Kyle Busch edged his teammate Joey Logano at the finish line by .019 seconds on Friday night’s NASCAR Nationwide Series Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

[media-credit name=”Brad Keppel” align=”alignright” width=”243″][/media-credit]The margin of victory was the smallest for a race at Bristol since the institution of electronic timing and scoring in ‘93.

“I did everything besides wrecking him. I wish I was in Victory Lane now instead of sitting here in second by like three inches,” Logano said.

This win was the 50th of Busch’s Nationwide Series career and he also broke a tie with Mark Martin to become the all-time winningest driver in Nationwide Series.

“It’s awesome.  Just phenomenal to come at one of my favorite places and one of the team’s favorite places.” Busch said.

Busch has won at least one race at 21 different tracks, with the most coming at Charlotte Motor Speedway (six).

Clint Bowyer finished third, Carl Edwards fourth and Aric Almirola finished fifth.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. holds a five point lead over Elliott Sadler in the series standings after Bristol.

Newman captures the Irwin Tools Night Race pole

Ryan Newman captured the pole for Saturday night’s Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway with a lap of 122.811MPH (15.624 secs).

[media-credit name=”Brad Keppel” align=”alignright” width=”230″][/media-credit]This was Newman’s 48th career pole in the Sprint Cup Series.

“I just was telling the guys, they did a good job. The car drove the same as it did in practice. When I ran in 95’ I did the exact same things but I guess I ran a little bit quicker. It’s a good run, gotta thank Bass Pro Shops, and Realtree. Hunting season is coming up so were raising more awareness about that. I don’t know if we will win the pole but it is a good team effort for us.” Newman said.

Carl Edwards qualified second, Matt Kenseth third, Jeff Gordon fourth and Mark Martin qualified fifth.

Edwards is glad to roll off second.

“At least I will be on the front row. I won’t get anything in my teeth up there on the Aflac Dental car on the first lap at least. Ryan did a good job and we did everything right today.” Edwards said.

“Not bad, but I thought it was a solid lap, we just missed the balance a little bit in the Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet.  I think we still have a decent starting position which is always a good thing here in Bristol.” Gordon said.

“Car’s just feeling really good today. I am excited; this is two weeks in a row. Last weekend the car was good all weekend too. I think we will have a strong car tomorrow night. Looking forward to a good run, I am starting to feel blessed to have this ride.” Martin said.

Talking ‘Danica’ at Bristol; Earnhardt Jr. discussed the new agreement

Bristol, TN. – Dale Earnhardt Jr. discussed the new agreement with Danica Patrick for full-time NASCAR Nationwide Series at JR Motorsports.

[media-credit name=”Ed Coombs” align=”alignright” width=”238″][/media-credit]Earnhardt Jr. is glad Patrick has made her decision and the “he I really didn’t have to get involved in it”.

“Her (Patrick) and Kelley (Earnhardt) basically hashed the whole deal out and I really didn’t have to get involved in it. It was pretty easy on my end.” Earnhardt Jr. said.

“I think it’s a good decision, man. We’re looking forward to it. Hopefully she enjoys it and has a good time with it. We’re going to try to put together good race cars and see if we can’t win some races.” Earnhardt Jr. said.

A Twitter message by Brad Keselowski stated that “if she does not make it, it’s going to be a long time before another woman gets a chance”. Earnhardt does not necessarily believe that, but believes “She (Patrick) is really savvy and I think she just opened the door myself, to a lot more opportunities for other women, regardless of whether she measures up to everybody’s expectations or not.”

Keselowski has had a lot of reactions to his comment.

“I got a lot of, ‘couldn’t have said it better’ reactions which is pretty interesting. I rely on a pool of friends, family and some fans to help me kind of assess things like that in my own mind. I think most of them agreed to what I said. I would say over 90 percent. If you can bat over 90 percent in anything you do in public opinion, I think you’re doing pretty damn well. I said what I meant.” Keselowski said.

Patrick also announced that she will be doing part-time driving in Sprint Cup Series for Stewart-Haas Racing in 2012 with Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman. She plans on competing eight and ten Sprint Cup races.

Newman discussed her schedule and the impact of Patrick joining Stewart-Haas Racing.

“I don’t think there has been any part of the schedule announced and I don’t know that there is a true idea of what she wants to do, or the sponsor wants to do. I really don’t know how its going to affect our entire organization but obviously there is a lot of hype around it and we have seen around other areas of the sport with a lot of hype there can be much disappointment so its something that I think we are all looking forward to just the experience of working with, for me, working with her.” Newman said.

“We are excited about it. She’s putting 100 percent into it and that’s something that we’re excited about. She is definitely deserving of an opportunity like this and we’re excited and honored that she chose us to do it with.” Stewart said.

Patrick may be making her Sprint Cup Debut in the Daytona 500 in 2012. Jeff Gordon spoke about her debuting at Daytona.

“It doesn’t matter to me. She did pretty well in the Nationwide race. To me, that was a testament of what she is capable of doing. So I don’t see why that would be the case if she has; I mean she’s racing the Indianapolis 500 and to me, that’s pretty challenging. So I think if that’s where they want to make her debut, I wouldn’t have any heartache against it because of the tracks that she’s raced at in the Nationwide Series.” Gordon said.

Stewart says the schedule has not been set yet.

“We’re working on her schedule and when we have a schedule, we’ll let you guys know what those races are going to be.” Stewart said.

[media-credit name=”Ed Coombs” align=”alignright” width=”230″][/media-credit]Kyle Busch captured the pole for Friday nights Nationwide Series Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway with a lap of 120.083 MPH (15.979 secs).

Joey Logano qualified second, Elliott Sadler third, Kenny Wallace fourth and Jason Leffler qualified fifth.

Kurt Busch declined an offer from Penske Racing to replace teammate Brad Keselowski, who will be sitting out his fifth consecutive Nationwide Series race as he recovers from a broken ankle.  Busch wanted to focus on the Sprint Cup Series No. 22 instead.

“I thought the best opportunity for us to get our Cup program where it needed to be was to focus just 100 percent on it,” Busch said.

Parker Kligerman will be replacing Keselowski in the No. 22, he qualified 12th.
