Justin Allgaier disappointed with outing at Bristol

It was oh so close for Allgaier and the No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevy who had the car to beat late in the race. He qualified third and was dominant throughout the stages, finishing second in Stage 1 and leading for a short while for 22 laps.

He had a chance to win the first stage before Tyler Reddick who was in second place made slight contact with him which cost Allgaier momentum and an eventual stage win. This let Brandon Jones drive on by to take the stage win.

Allgaier stayed consistent in Stage 2 running up front but never contended for the lead. The JR Motorsports driver had to settle for a third-place stage finish in the second stage.

It wasn’t until the final stage when Allgaier began to shine. He stayed out on a Lap 223 caution for his teammate Michael Annett, as Reddick came down pit road. From there, Allgaier went on a tear to lead 109 laps until a caution on Lap 281 changed everything.

The caution bunched the field up once again and there was a 14-lap dash to settle who would win at Bristol. Unfortunately, Allgaier had a flat tire with 10 laps to go that cost him the win and ended his dominant run at Bristol.

“I didn’t get into the wall, I got a right front flat,” Allgaier said to PRN Radio. “It just really sucks, you know these guys do such a great job. The Brandt Professional Agriculture Camaro was good tonight. I don’t know if we had anything for the 18 (Busch), but when he had his issue, we were definitely class of the field there I thought.”

“Then Tyler (Reddick) had a good car on the short runs. I thought our car was really good on the long run and nothing to show for it. Another Bristol, where we had the dominant car and nothing to show for, it’s just a sucky night.”

  • Clements, Gaulding, Hill, have strong runs at Bristol

Clements, Gaulding, Hill, have strong runs at Bristol

Bristol would probably be the last place you would expect to see guys like Jeremy Clements, Gray Gaulding and Timmy Hill finishing inside the top-10, but truth be told, Bristol is an equalizer for teams.

For Jeremy Clements and his family-owned No. 51 team, it was his best finish of the year so far in the 2019 Xfinity Series season. It has been a year of ups and downs for the team but Friday night at Bristol, they finished fourth. Clements, however, wanted a little more at the end.

“Yeah, it was a decent effort,” Clements told PRN Radio. “We started off super tight and faded pretty good there at the start. Got our car a lot better as we went. Just couldn’t get the tightness out like I needed it to through the center. Our RepairableVehicles.com Chevrolet and fast Xfinity internet, we had a good run. Got moved on the last lap by the 23 (Nemechek), unfortunately. That sucks, I was wanting that top three, but oh well. Looking forward to going to Road America, ready to kick their ass there and ready to win again. Let’s do it!”

Clements finished 10th in Stage 2 and earned his first top-five of the season.

For Gray Gaulding and the No. 08 Bobby Dotter team, they wound up sixth tonight after a great qualifying effort of 13th. Gaulding finished eighth in Stage 1 while not receiving any stage finish points in Stage 2. Still, it was a solid night for the team.

“I didn’t leave nothing out there, that’s for sure,” Gaulding said to PRN Radio. “I muscled it all night long. My guys gave me a great car. Throughout the race, we just kept working on it to get better and better, just trying to keep track position which was key tonight. So good fight. We’re going to celebrate this one. I mean, we’re little guys here. To finish sixth at Bristol at the night race in front of all these great fans is a special night.”

This was Gaulding third top-10 finish of the 2019 Xfinity Series season.

A fan favorite in the Xfinity Series, Timmy Hill, who was driving the No 61 Carl Long Toyota with support from Hattori Racing, finished seventh tonight at Bristol. It was Hill’s best finish of his career.

“This was a very exciting weekend for us,” Hill said to PRN Radio. “We partnered with HRE, Toyota Tsusho came on board for this race, really excited for that. We wanted to put in a good run for those guys. During practice, I figured we had a good car, did really well in practice. Didn’t qualify as well as we would have liked, but we stayed patient throughout the race, really marched forward. These guys really prepared me a great car. Seventh place is my best finish in my career.”

“I wish we could have got one better if not get a top-five and I’m so pleased with these guys.”

  • Reddick goes from worst to first at Bristol

Reddick goes from worst to first at Bristol

It was a wild night for the No. 2 Richard Childress Racing driver Tyler Reddick who won the annual Xfinity Series Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Qualifying was a disaster for him, as he failed inspection four times and was not allowed to post a lap, therefore had to start at the rear and serve a pass-through at the start of the race. But Reddick took the lead with 14 to go when Justin Allgaier had a flat tire go down late and went on to win at Bristol.

“Man, it’s crazy,” Reddick told PRN Radio. “We had to overcome a lot of things in this race. We had a lot of good cars we were racing against. Unfortunately, we never got to race with a lot of them and that’s how racing goes. Someone’s gotta win, you’ll take them however you can get them.”

A few notes, Erik Jones was back in his first Xfinity Series race since 2017 at Phoenix. Austin Cindric who has been on a tear as of late sat on the pole a couple of hours before the race started. Alongside him was all-time Xfinity wins leader Kyle Busch who started second.

    Stage 1: Lap 1-Lap 85

The caution came out early on Lap 7 for the No. 68 of Mason Diaz who blew a right front tire. This gave Reddick a lucky break as he received the free pass and was back on the lead lap.

A few other drivers had issues but no caution was thrown. The No. 17 of Joe Nemechek had smoke coming out while Ray Black Jr was slow on the track on Lap 21. A major incident broke out on the backstretch when Cole Custer, Joey Logano, Christopher Bell and Erik Jones all piled into each other.

Custer, Bell and Jones received the most damage. Custer had power steering issues, Jones went out of the race and Bell would end up many laps down.

Another caution broke came out on Lap 52 for John Hunter Nemechek who spun in Turn 2 after blowing a tire. The caution flew once more on Lap 73 for debris in Turn 2. One more final caution occurred right before the stage break as Reddick got loose and made slight contact with race leader Allgaier in Turn 4.

This would cause the stage to end under caution and Brandon Jones won the first stage after the incident. Allgaier, Ryan Sieg, Michael Annett, Noah Gragson, Landon Cassill, Kyle Busch, Gray Gaulding, Josh Williams and Garrett Smithley rounded out the top-10 finishers in Stage 1.

During the stage Justin Haley had smoke from the cockpit, eventually going to the garage with a tire rub. Under the stage break, Reddick was hit with a safety violation and was sent to the rear.

    Stage 2: Lap 92-Lap 170

The sixth caution came out on Lap 121 for the 90 of Ronnie Bassett Jr. who had a freak incident off Turn 2. His right rear tire snapped loose and came completely off the car in front of race leader Kyle Busch. There were some reports that Busch may have had some damage but he reported the car was fine with no issues.

Gragson took the lead for five laps off the restart but Busch retook the lead and led for the final 78 laps to end the stage. Busch won Stage 2 but troubles arose for the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing driver.

Despite Busch reporting no major issues, his engine let go right after taking the green-checkered flag for Stage 2. He would be done for the rest of the night and wound up a disappointing 29th after leading 137 laps.

Reddick, Allgaier, Cindric, Hunter Nemechek, Brandon Jones, Briscoe, Annett, Sieg and Clements rounded out the top-10 stage finishers for Stage 2.

There were a few drivers who pitted under caution. Hunter Nemechek was caught with a speeding penalty.

    Stage 3: Lap 180-300

There was a long green-flag run when Stage 3 began until a caution broke out on Lap 223 as Michael Annett wrecked in Turn 2.

Another green flag run ensued and Reddick was flying through the field with fresher tires than Allgaier. Sieg was having an impressive run in third place before catching the Turn 2 wall. More problems arose for the No. 39 team as smoke was coming out of the left-rear. He was black-flagged by NASCAR due to the smoke and had to come down pit road.

Sieg pitted for four fresh tires, hoping that would fix the issue, but smoke rose once again. He would be penalized by NASCAR again.

After another long green-flag run, a caution came out with 20 to go for fluid from the No. 52 of David Starr. Christopher Bell also had a right-front tire go down under caution.

This would set up an exciting 14 laps to the finish with Allgaier and Reddick battling each other for the win. Brandon Jones had a flat tire with 11 to go, then the big moment came in the race with 10 to go.

Race leader Allgaier had a flat tire and with that and Tyler Reddick was able to go right on by and score his first-ever win at Bristol.

“I just knew we had a great car,” Reddick added to PRN Radio. “I actually thought we weren’t quite as competitive as the 18 (Busch), 81 (Erik Jones), 12 (Logano), 20 (Bell), for that matter when they got caught up in the wreck. It was just a game-changer for us when we got that caution and got back on the lead lap. Got our lucky dog and from there, we got to the front and made a mistake and we had to do it all over again one more time. This time, we made it work.”

There were nine cautions for 59 laps, with seven leaders among 11 lead changes.

This was Reddick’s fourth win of the season, his first since Michigan in June. He continues to be the championship points leader over Christopher Bell by 54 points.

Up Next: The NASCAR Xfinity Series continues their run to the Playoffs by heading to Road America on Saturday, August 24.

  • NTT IndyCar Series Preview 2019- Pocono

NTT IndyCar Series Preview 2019- Pocono

The NTT IndyCar Series returns to the track this weekend after some time off since their Mid-Ohio race, a few weeks back. And with just four races remaining, the battle for the championship is heating up between Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden and Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi.

Twenty-two drivers will make up the entry list and all 22 will make the field. Here are five potential drivers that might win Sunday’s ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.

    1. Scott Dixon – This shouldn’t come as a surprise to most IndyCar fans. Dixon has been great at Pocono since the first race in 2013. In fact, he won the first race there that year. Since then, Dixon has yet to find victory lane but has finished inside the top-10 or five in those five starts. He came close to winning in 2017 when he led 51 laps; 2018 might have been his best chance when he finished third after starting 13th. While Dixon may be out of the championship hunt, fourth in the standings, -62 points behind, he can still spoil the party and add to his impressive IndyCar resume.

    2. Will Power – Power has made every Pocono start since the tracks first outing in 2013. However, it wasn’t until 2016 that he won his first Pocono race and then went on to win in 2017 for the second consecutive time. Power came close once again last year when he qualified on the pole and finished second after leading 16 laps. In all six starts, the Team Penske driver has been able to lead laps in every race. He led 15 laps in 2013, 69 laps in 2014, led two laps in 2015, led 55 laps when he won in 2016 and led 34 laps in 2017, for a total of 191 laps led and an average finish of 3.7.

    3. Josef Newgarden – The championship points leader is pretty impressive at Pocono. In six starts, Newgarden has five top-fives and six top-10 finishes with a best finish of second twice, in 2015 and 2017. The Tennessee native has 73 laps led with an average finish of 4.3. However, two things are eluding him. Newgarden has no poles or wins at the track. If he wants to extend his points lead on Sunday, he’ll have to have a good Saturday with qualification and starting on the pole.

    4. Alexander Rossi – Unlike Newgarden, Rossi has one win which came in last year’s race after starting third and dominating, leading all but 20 laps. The Napa driver has finishes of third in 2017 and 20th after wrecking out in 2016. Like Power, Rossi has been able to lead laps in every outing at Pocono despite his DNF in 2016. He has 228 laps led with an average finish of 8.0. Rossi will have to do the same as he did last year if he wants to close the points gap on Sunday.

    5. Simon Pagenaud – The Indy 500 champion has just one finish outside the top-10 that occurred in 2016 when he finished 18th and that was partly due to a crash that took Pagenaud out on Lap 157. Otherwise, Pagenaud has been decent at “The Tricky Triangle.” In his other five starts, the Team Penske driver has finishes of sixth twice in 2013 and 2014 and seventh in his first outing with Team Penske, leading 30 laps. In the last two races, Pagenaud finished eighth and fourth respectively. The No. 22 driver has an average finish of 8.2.

The entry list is pretty much the same, other than Conor Daly returning to the field in the No. 59 for Carlin racing. it will be Daly’s first race back since Iowa where he finished 13th.

Pocono Raceway has seen six races since their first race in 2013 under the IndyCar name with four different winners. Will Power is the only one to have won twice. Scott Dixon won in 2013, Juan Pablo Montoya won in 2014 and Rossi in 2018.

The on-track action begins on Saturday morning with first practice at 9:30 a.m. live on NBC Sports Gold. NBCSN will then have qualifications at 12:30 p.m., lasting 75 minutes. The NTT IndyCar Series drivers will then have one more final practice session for the day at 4 p.m., also live on NBC Sports Gold.

On Sunday, the drivers will take to the track for the seventh annual ABC Supply 500 with a green flag time of 2:45 p.m. live on NBCSN. The Drivers Start Your Engines command is slated for 2:39 p.m. The race will have 200 laps.

  • Denny Hamlin wins the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night race pole at Bristol

Denny Hamlin wins the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night race pole at Bristol

Denny Hamlin won the Pole Award for Saturday night’s 59th Annual Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race with a lap of 14.848 seconds, 129.230 mph.

“I didn’t know I beat (Kyle) Larson. I thought it was Martin (Truex Jr.). Perfect. Even better. I was wondering why he was giving me the finger when I pulled in. No, that’s awesome. We’re about to go up and watch this Xfinity race in the stands, so nice. I didn’t know what he ran. I knew we had a shot. The second practice especially, our car was really good and had good speed at the front of the run and end of the run. I was confident as long as the crew chief did his job and I did my job, we’d definitely have a chance.” Hamlin said.

This was Hamlin’s first pole of the season, fourth at Bristol and the 31st of his career.

“Fortunately for us, qualifying doesn’t pay any money and it doesn’t pay any points. It really hasn’t weighed on us. I mean obviously with the aero package that we have, you can make your car on most tracks as fast or slow as you want to, but you have concerns about racing after that. We’ve really focused on making our cars race well and that’s where all the accolades come from. Sure, you want to win a pole. That’s obviously a big deal.” Hamlin said.

The No. 42 of Kyle Larson had the pole for a second or two until he eventually had to settle to start outside pole. Larson had a time of 14.87 to start second.

“Overall, I’m happy with how we qualified and the grip I had in my car. In practice, I was really loose. So hopefully we’ll have a good race tomorrow and try and get my first Bristol Cup win.” Larson said.

Martin Truex Jr, Kurt Busch, Aric Almirola, Chase Elliott, Matt DiBenedetto, Kevin Harvick, Erik Jones and Alex Bowman rounded out the top-10 finishers.

“Bristol can either be really good or really bad. It seems like it can be that way no matter how many times you’ve been here. You just hope you hit on it right and can survive. It’s a long race and sometimes it’s hard to just make it to the end. I haven’t had a whole lot of success here anyways, so hopefully tomorrow is better.” Elliott said.

A few other notables that are starting outside the top-10. Joey Logano in 11th, Ryan Blaney in 12th, Brad Keselowski in 13th, Clint Bowyer in 20th, William Byron in 21st, Jimmie Johnson in 30th and Kyle Busch in 31st.

“We were decent, but I was hoping for a little bit more. I had a great first lap and just got a little bit out on the second one.” Keselowski said.

Winning at Bristol has came from various starting spots. Kyle Busch won from 17th in the spring, Kurt Busch won from ninth last August, Kyle Busch won from the pole in spring of 2018 and 18th in 2017, and Jimmie Johnson from 11th in spring of 2017.

The NRA Bass Pro Shops 500 is slated to get underway shortly after 7:30 p.m./ET live on NBCSN and PRN Radio.

  • ARCA Menards Series Preview- Springfield

    ARCA Menards Series Preview- Springfield

The ARCA Menards Series drivers return on-track this weekend for the exciting Allen Crowe 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. It’ll mark the 16th race of the season and five races left until the championship finale at Kansas Speedway in October.

Dirt specialist and POWRI Midget driver Logan Seavey is set to return to the ARCA field this weekend, driving the No. 20 Venturini Motorsports Toyota. Illinois State Fairgrounds is the site where Seavey made his ARCA debut in 2018. Seavey is excited for another opportunity in ARCA on dirt.

“Coming off our success last year at these races, I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to run the dirt races again this year,” Seavey said. “Venturini brings the best cars in the field and with my experience from last year’s races, I’m confident we will have good runs at both tracks.”

It’s not often you find Seavey in a stock car, as he spends most of his time on dirt, but he hopes to lean on his experience to breakthrough on Sunday.

“Dirt tracks change drastically throughout an event so having so much experience will definitely help me as the track changes from practice to qualifying, and throughout the 100-lap race,” he said. “Knowing what to look for on the racing surface and what is coming gives me an edge over most of the field.”

While Seavey has experience on dirt, his Venturini Motorsports teammate and championship points leader Michael Self does not. It’ll be the first time ever Self sees races on dirt.

“This is definitely going to be new experience for me,” Self says. “I’ve got very limited dirt experience so I’ve been asking a ton of questions and really trying to learn so I have an idea of what to expect this weekend. To be honest, I’m a bit nervous but also pretty excited. I’ve really enjoyed the dirt experiences that I have had, and just thought they were a ton of fun, so I’m anxious to see if this is comparable at all.”

It’ll be a challenge Self who will be managing his championship points lead sine he does not have any previous starts on the dirt tracks of Illinois State Fairgrounds and DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.

Self could lean on his teammate Christian Eckes who won last years race after being dominant and leading 60 of the 106 laps.

“We had a good showing last year,” said Eckes. “Running both dirt tracks prepared me a good amount for this season. It’s still unnatural for me but we’ve shown that we have the speed each time out. I’m just looking forward to the weekend and to having some fun out on the dirt.”

Even with the win last year at Illinois State Fairgrounds, Eckes says he needs to do that again in order to have any shot at the championship when the season dwindles down at Kansas in October.

“At this point we need to win. We need points and the best way to do so is to go get the maximum. I feel like we have the team to do it and we’re all ready to go do it.”

Eckes almost has a perfect rating at the dirt track in Illinois. The Venturini Motorsports driver has one win in two starts, with an average finish of 3.5. In 2017, the Middletown, New York native finished sixth and led two laps. Eckes also competed in the Eldora Dirt Derby where he finished sixth a couple of weeks ago.

Moving onto the Chad Bryant Racing team, youngster Corey Heim is slated to make his first ever dirt ARCA start this Sunday. The No. 22 Chad Bryant Racing driver is hopeful for a good outing, despite not having the experience needed.

“Unfortunately, I don’t know have any knowledge on dirt or what to expect with an ARCA car,” Heim said.“With that being said, I’m going into Springfield and even DuQuoin not knowing what to expect, but I feel like it’s going to be a ton of fun.” “It’s a pretty short day, so hopefully I can get things figured out in practice and qualifying and then make some good moves during the race.”

With not having the experience on dirt, Heim will be leaning heavily on his Chad Bryant Racing crew and hope to build it for the second dirt race later in the season.

“I’m going to be leaning on Chad (Bryant, team owner) and Paul (Andrews, crew chief) to help me with any mistakes early so I can be on game for the race. We’ll just go and see what happens.
“I think I can take what I learn from Springfield and build on it in DuQuoin. My goal is to run up front in these ARCA Menards Series races, even at these dirt tracks where the racing will be completely foreign to me.”

While Heim will be making his first ARCA dirt start on Sunday, his teammate Joe Graf Jr will have already competed in two races already. Graf Jr competed in the K&N Pro Series at Bristol on Thursday night and raced in the Xfinity Series on Friday night.

“Yeah, it’s going to be a busy couple days, but I’m excited about that and can’t wait,” said Joe Graf Jr. “A lot of people including Chad Bryant Racing have put a lot of effort into making Bristol and Springfield possible and without everyone’s support, I know this triple-duty weekend wouldn’t be possible.”

Graf Jr has just one start at the fairgrounds in 2018, where he was unable to finish the race due to a crash that took him out late in the race on lap 87 of 106. Even with the crash from last year, the Chad Bryant Racing driver is excited to return to the track on Sunday.

“The dirt is a lot of fun,” sounded Graf Jr. “Momentum and throttle are critical for mastering places like Springfield and DuQuoin. I learned a lot about tire conservation last year too.”

While one driver is excited to be back on dirt, so is another. That’s Bret Holmes who drives his family own No. 23 machine. Holmes has had experience racing dirt tracks in his home state of Alabama.

Yeah, it’s going to be a lot of fun to get back on dirt,” said Holmes. “I used to dirt race. I did it for about three-and-a-half years. That’s all my dad raced; he was a dirt late model racer. These dirt races are a lot of fun for us. I think it’s one of the races that all of us drivers look forward to every year, it’s just a good time running on the dirt. Springfield is basically a flat horse track, but it can be challenging. I’m looking forward to it for sure. We can really gain back some points back this month.

With having the dirt track experience that is needed to race, Holmes says they can be tricky and reach out to get you without any warning.

“These dirt tracks can get slick without much warning, and it’s easy to get out of the groove and mess up,” said Holmes. “You have to be patient and race the track. I think that’s where my experience will come in, and we can capitalize on it. I learned a lot when we used to run on dirt, and my dad has a ton of experience with it. We’ll use all of that to our advantage this month and gain as many points as possible.”

Holmes has two starts with one top-10 finish that came in 2018, where he earned his career best track finish of sixth.

Travis Braden, who also drives a family owned No. 27 machine hopes to better his fourth place finish in his only start that came last year. It was the first time he had ever competed on dirt.

“Last year, being that I had never raced on a true dirt track in a stock car before, we didn’t know what to expect and expectations were basically not even on our mind,” Braden said. “But after a solid first go at it in Springfield, we actually saw a glimpse of victory on the horizon at DuQuoin.”

Braden was in search of victory last year at DuQuoin taking the lead on lap 49 and leading 17 laps, before getting taken out in a wreck on lap 67 of 100.

“I am now very hungry for that redemption,” Braden said emphatically. “We’ve had so many opportunities for victory and have yet to manage it. After having it taken away from us in DuQuoin last year, I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder for this one. No excuses.”

Carson Hocevar who competes in the No. 28 KBR Development Chevy returns to the ARCA field for the first time since Iowa earleir this season, where he finished fourth. However, Hocevar will be making his first ever ARCA dirt debut this Sunday in Illinois. Despite it being his first ARCA dirt start, Hocevar competed in the Eldora Dirt Derby last month driving for Jordan Anderson.

“There are a lot of things I learned at Eldora Speedway that I can apply to this weekend’s ARCA Menards Series race at Springfield,” Hocevar said. “I think that experience is really going to help us off the trailer and help me adapt quicker so we just focus on our balance. I am excited to get going on Sunday. It should be a fun race.”

Other names that are scheduled to compete are Wayne Peterson, Bobby Gerhart, Dick Doheny, Eric Caudell, Tommy Vigh Jr, Mike Basham, Kelly Kovski, Ty Gibbs, Ryan Unzicker, Brad Smith, Will Kimmel, Dale Shearer and Tim Richmond.

ARCA Series legends and today’s NASCAR stars have won at the dirt track in Springfield, Illinois. Names like Dean Roper, Bob Keselowski, Tim Steele, Ken Schrader, Frank Kimmel (Who has the most wins with eight wins), Justin Allgaier, Parker Kligerman, Brennan Poole, Kevin Swindell, Justin Haley, Grant Enfinger and Christian Eckes.

In the last five races, the race winners have come from anywhere in the field. Eckes won from the eighth position in 2018, Enfinger from second in 2017, Haley from 12th in 2016, Fike from 25th in 2015 and Swindell from eighth in 2014.

It’ll be a one day show like normal for the ARCA Menards Series drivers on Sunday. The only practice session is slated to take place at 9:00 a.m./Central. General Tire Pole Qualifying is scheduled to take place at 11:00 a.m./Central with no live TV coverage, but live timing and scoring can be seen on arcaracing.com with a free account.

The Allen Crowe 100 is set to get underway shortly after 1:30 p.m./Central and 2:30 p.m./ET live on MAVTV.

  • Enfinger rounds out top five finishers at Bristol

Enfinger rounds out top five finishers at Bristol

After leading 57 laps and qualifying 14th, regular-season champion Enfinger came home fifth at Bristol.

“Great job to Jeff Hensley (Crew Chief) right there, gusty call and getting some track position,” Enfinger said to MRN Radio. “We weren’t a bad truck when we had the lead. I don’t know what I would have done different on that restart. The 24 (Moffitt) was a little bit better than us on the top. I thought about taking away the top side, but we weren’t worth a crap up there, so I stuck to the bottom and that’s what worked for us.”

“He just flat out nailed that restart and got me. We had a great truck, once we got some clean air. Really proud of everyone at ThorSport Racing. Champion Power Equipment, Duke and Rhonda Thorson, Curb Records, everyone that lets us do this.”

Enfinger took the lead once and led for 57 laps before the eventual race winner, Brett Moffitt, took it from him on Lap 174, and went on to win the race. The Alabama native finished ninth in Stage 2 and is currently tied with his teammate Matt Crafton in fourth in the point standings, 28 points back from first.

  • Chastain and Friesen earn hard fought top-five finishes

Chastain and Friesen earn hard fought top-five finishes

It was a wild night at the “Fastest Half Mile” for playoff drivers Ross Chastain and Stewart Friesen.

Chastain started on the outside pole at Bristol and was dominant in the first stage, earning the win in Stage 1. He and pole-sitter Brett Moffitt traded the lead back and forth multiple times between each other. In Stage 2, Chastain finished second to Moffitt.

However, Chastain was involved with some incidents on the track. One was an issue in Turn 4 when Raphael Lessard was spun and Friesen was as well. The Niece Motorsports driver also ruffled some feathers throughout the race by holding his ground and taking no prisoners.

In the end, after a long day and night, Chastain brought home his No. 45 truck in the third position after leading four times for 78 laps.

“It was rough for sure, that’s why they’re all lining up wanting to fight me,” Chastain told MRN Radio. “But let them come one at a time, we’re not afraid of them. It’s a dream come true to be able to drive for Niece Motorsports and be in this championship hunt and I’m not going to back down. We’re going to press the attack, that’s what Al Niece our Marine Veteran and Team Owner instill into us as a race team. TheCarShield Chevy was fast, I wish I was able to race with Brett (Moffitt).”

Friesen and his No. 52 Halmar Racing had a similar night.

The Canadian qualified third and worked hard all night to stay up there. Friesen finished seventh in Stage 1 and fifth in Stage 2. However, his moment came on Lap 152 in Turn 4 when Matt Crafton accidentally made contact with him. At this point, the No. 52 was beaten and battered but that doesn’t matter at Bristol with the track leaning so much on aerodynamics.

Still, despite the incident, Friesen was able to rebound to a fourth-place finish.

“A lot of speed that just didn’t fire off worth a crap,” Friesen told MRN Radio. “That’s kind of in the norm, we don’t fire off good in the last couple of races and kind of puts us in a hole, but fought back and made one good adjustment and that’s all it took. We had a fast car at the end.”

Despite the accident with Crafton, Friesen says they have no hard feelings.

“There wasn’t much contact really,” Friesen added to MRN Radio. “It is what it is, race on. I respect the hell out of that guy (Crafton). He’s a cool dude and we’ll race on. We’re both mature guys and that’s it. We talked a little bit right there and that’s it, that’s all we had to say.”

  • Smith comes home second in Bristol outing

Smith comes home second in Bristol outing

It was an impressive run for Chandler Smith and his No. 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports team as they came home in the second position after having a shot to win the race late.

Smith qualified seventh finished fifth and third in both stages, respectively. He was up front throughout the race, but especially late in the race when Smith had a shot to win with a restart with three laps to go. He eventually finished runner up to race winner Moffitt in his first-ever truck series start at Bristol.

“Yeah, he (Moffitt) was just better all day,” Smith said to MRN Radio. “We fought back early in the race and we got to the 45 (Chastain) and Brett. We just needed a little bit more to be where he is right now.”

“I just can’t thank Rudy Fugle (Crew Chief), KBM, iBuyPower Toyota for this incredible opportunity. We definitely made the most of it.”

It was Smith’s third Truck Series start of the season and his career-best finish in the series. The 17-year-old now has the KBM 51 Truck third in the Owners Playoff grid, +26.

  • Playoff contender Brett Moffitt wins at Bristol

Playoff contender Brett Moffitt wins at Bristol

Start first and finish first was the name of the game for the GMS Racing driver Brett Moffitt as he took home the win Thursday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. It was Moffitt’s third win of the season and locks him into the Round of 6 as the Playoffs continue.

“This is unbelievable,” Moffitt excitedly told MRN Radio. “I’ve had runs in the past where I’m decent but I never felt confident at this track. There’s so much that can happen, but man, getting the first win here and having Junior Johnson on the hood of this truck and to go to victory lane at Bristol, Tennessee up here in the mountains, you know where Moonshine is started.”

“It’s so cool to have him on this truck and honor him at this place, but to win in this round and get locked in is truly unbelievable and the best win of the season thus far. So it’s all good.”

Moffitt and another playoff championship contender, Ross Chastain, started on the front row.

    Stage 1: Lap 1 – Lap 57

Stage 1 only saw one incident that took place on Lap 4 for Sheldon Creed, Jordan Anderson and Jesse Little for an accident in Turn 2. Other than that, Niece Motorsports driver Ross Chastain went on to win the first stage with a dominant truck.

Moffitt, Johnny Sauter, Ben Rhodes, Chandler Smith, Matt Crafton, Stewart Friesen, Tyler Ankrum, John Hunter Nemechek and Austin Hill rounded out the top-10 stage finishers for Stage 1. Sauter, Rhodes, Harrison Burton, Grant Enfinger and Hill were among the drivers to pit under the stage break.

    Stage 2: Lap 66 – Lap 112

Stage 2 saw a lot more action. On Lap 68, a caution came out for the returning Angela Ruch who went spinning on the front stretch. Then, on Lap 77, Nemechek wrecked on the front stretch after Sauter got loose off of Turn 4. During the incident, Nemechek also collected Sauter as he turned down on the track with Sauter receiving right front fender damage.

These were the only incidents that happened in Stage 2 but this time Moffitt took the stage win after Chastain nearly dominated once again. However, during the stage break, the Florida native was penalized for a safety violation and was sent to the rear of the field.

Chastain, Smith, Crafton, Friesen, Ankrum, Rhodes, Raphael Lessard, Enfinger and Sam Mayer completed the top-10 stage finishers for Stage 2.

    Stage 3: Lap 121- Lap 200

The third and final stage saw the most action. On Lap 131 Tyler Dippel spun in Turn 2 after contact with Brennan Poole. Dylan Lupton and Timmy Hill were also involved. On Lap 137 Natalie Decker brought out the caution again. During the caution, Ankrum reported his engine was skipping intermittently. Burton also had a broken shock mount to his No. 18 Kyle Busch Motorsports truck.

The caution came out once again with 48 to go for Friesen and Crafton. Both had made contact in one of the turns after Crafton got a little bit sideways and then got into Friesen and sent Friesen into the wall. On Lap 168, Jennifer Jo Cobb went around after Rhodes made slight contact with her. After the incident, the replays showed Rhodes was trying to lift and not make contact but eventually did.

During the last 27 laps, it seemed the race would take forever with a stop and go for caution. Lessard went spinning around in Turn 1 with 24 to go after contact with Chastain. Meanwhile, Sauter made contact with the inside wall. With 17 to go, Gus Dean, Decker and Dippel were involved and had damage to their trucks.

Under the caution, Decker was trying to get the push truck to back off as she had her truck fired but the push truck did not realize it and eventually sent Decker around on the surface. The race was red-flagged with 14 to go due to oil on the track and to allow fans to see a run to the finish.

The final caution of the night took place with eight to go, as rookie Mayer hit the wall. This would set up a three-lap dash for an exciting finish. Moffitt, the 2018 Truck Series champion, was able to fend off rookie Smith in a thrilling battle to the checkered flag.

“We got the next two races where we can go race aggressive and try to get more points for the following round, but this is a lot of pressure off our race team,” Moffitt added to MRN Radio.

With the win, Moffitt moves onto the Round of 6 and will not have to worry about Canada or Las Vegas.

There were 12 cautions for 73 laps with nine lead changes among three drivers.
