  • Joey Gase to drive for Rick Ware Racing in 2020

    Rick Ware Racing announced Friday that they will welcome Joey Gase to their NASCAR Cup Series team lineup in 2020 beginning with the season-opening Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 16.

    The 26-year-old has competed in all three national series while his main focus has been the NASCAR Xfinity Series where he has run a full-time schedule since 2014. In 2019, Gase scored six top-20 finishes with a best finish of 16th at Daytona International Speedway in February.

    He has also managed to gain experience in the Cup Series, with 41 starts since 2014. In 11 Cup Series races this year his best Cup Series finish was 27th at the Daytona Coke Zero Sugar 400 in July.

    His crew chief has not been announced but you can be certain that the entire organization is gearing up for Gase’s first full-time season in the Cup Series and assembling the team and tools he will need to find success.   • James Small promoted to crew chief for Martin Truex Jr. in 2020

    Joe Gibbs Racing announced Thursday that James Small has been promoted to crew chief of the NASCAR Cup Series No. 19 Bass Pro Shops Toyota team with driver Martin Truex Jr. The news came just 10 days after Truex’s former crew chief, Cole Pearn, announced his departure from JGR.

    Small, a native of Melbourne, Australia, has worked with Truex for the past three seasons beginning when they were both with Furniture Row Racing. In 2019 he joined JGR as the lead engineer for the No. 19 team with seven race wins, 15 top-five finishes and 24 top-10s as Truex finished runner-up in the year-end standings.

    This will be the 36-year-old’s first full-time season as a crew chief. Small’s only previous experience as a crew chief was for two races In 2017 when he filled in to work with Erik Jones at Furniture Row Racing. Prior to that, he served in an engineering role at Richard Childress Racing from 2014-2016.

    Pearn gave Small his full support, stating on Twitter, that Small “was the unanimous pick and I am so stoked to see one of my best friends get this opportunity and I know he is going to kill it.”

    Truex also gave Small his endorsement, saying, “I know James well and feel very comfortable with him. I feel like we approach racing very similar. He and Cole (Pearn) have a lot of similarities. It’s a natural fit and I’m really excited about it. I think he’ll do a great job.”

    Anheuser-Busch and Daytona International Speedway announced this week that Busch Beer will return as the title sponsor for the season-opening exhibition race in 2020. It will be the first time since 1997 that the race will revert back to its original name, the Busch Clash at Daytona.

    Anheuser-Busch’s relationship with NASCAR began in 1978 as the sponsor for the Busch Pole Award. The following year, they expanded their sponsorship with the Busch Clash at Daytona. They continued to sponsor the event through 2011 but it went through some changes to the name including the Bud Shootout and the Budweiser Shootout.

Eligible drivers are 2019 Busch Pole Award winners, past Busch Clash winners who competed full-time in 2019, former Daytona 500 champions who competed full-time in 2019, former Daytona 500 pole winners who competed full time in 2019 and the 2019 Cup Series Playoff drivers.

    Tuning a car is not as simple or as straightforward as you might think at first.     Putting on racing wheels and tires

    You are probably aware of how much deflated tires can negatively influence your car’s performance, namely the speed. In racing, where a split second can decide the winner, you want your tires to perform to their best and not slow you down in any way. That’s why there are special racing tires that are made with speed in mind, so be sure to buy them for your vehicle.

    Furthermore, the rims are an important factor when it comes to acceleration because the conventional rims are too heavy and slow down the car. Like tires, there are special racing wheels made from ultra-light aluminum or magnesium alloy that make the car light so it can pick up speed faster, all the while making the racer stable to prevent tipping over.

    Balancing the weight of the car

    It seems way too early to be looking at the Daytona 500. But it will run on February 16th, so it is only a few months away. The Nascar offseason is just about finished and it seems like the season just ended!

    It’s no surprise that Kyle Busch is the 2019 Cup Series Champion. He was dominant all year long and he is now the proud owner of two Series Cups. And his Series win came with a Championship Race win in Homestead.

    With less than 50 laps to go, Kyle Busch had an 8-second lead on Martin Truex Jr. There were some issues along the way as well, like Denny Hamlins getting taken out of contention due to some misplaced tape that caused him to have to pit a second time costing the No. 11 team any hope at winning. This was especially heartbreaking after seeing Hamlin overtake Kevin Harvick and wrestle with Kyle Busch for the lead. Kyle Larson, who was also contending for the lead was put out of the contest due to engine troubles.

    So it isn’t a surprise to see many of these names at the top of the list on an early odds post at SBR Forum.

    To Daytona

    The richest race on the circuit is the Daytona 500. It’s also probably the most popular race in NASCAR, at least with casual fans. It’s also the first leg of NASCAR’s Grand Slam – Daytona 500, the Winston 500 at Talladega, and the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte.

    The Daytona International Speedway has been running races since 1959 and is considered the most prestigious course in NASCAR.  The stands and grounds hold just under 168,000 people, making it a massive spectator event. The two-and-a-half-mile tri-oval set up is fast and – pardon the phrase– furious. The lap speeds can push 210 miles per hour, like Bill Elliot’s 1987 42.782 second lap time.

    Denny Hamlin won here last season starting from 10th, in a lengthy 3:45 race. Austin Dillon won in 2108 and started from 14th. Kurt Busch won in 2017 from the 8th spot. Denny Hamlin also won in 2016 after starting in the 11th. And Joey Logano won in 2015 from 5th.

    Seeing Austin Dillon down at 40 to 1 is interesting, given he won here two years ago. He had a weak-ish season last year, but still finished in the top 16 at Daytona in 2019. So, he will be a threat in 2020 and shouldn’t be counted out for a top 10 finish this time around for our fantasy NASCAR picks.

    Kyle Busch at 14-1 is also valuable and could have a lot of value in our fantasy leagues, depending on what DFS price he comes in at. He’s never won the Daytona 500 but he came in second last year. And considering his dominance all over the Monster Energy Circuit, he very well could pull off his first Daytona 500 checkered flag. Joey Logano is another that should be on our radar. He’s one of the four favorites at 10-1 and he came in 4th last year and in 2018, 6th in 2017 and he won in 2016. The guy is consistently at the front of the pack in Daytona. Denny Hamlin, of course, can’t be ignored. He has won twice in the last five years and came in 3rd in 2018.

    It’s still too early to tell what will happen. And of course, each race has a sort of life of its own. You never know what kind of issues will pop up that affect the entire pack. That said, we are already looking forward to an exciting season and an action-packed Daytona 500 this February 16th.

    Kyle Busch landed his second championship since the new elimination format started in 2014. This was following his victory at Homestead-Miami Speedway, which meant he became the first driver to reach this feat. This is all the more impressive, as this new elimination playoff format came into place, it has made winning a championship even harder. In previous formats, it was much more common to see repeat winners, such as when using the Bob Latford system between 1975 and 2003.

    Busch finished top of the playoff standings with 46 points. From his 36 starts in the original season, he picked up five wins, that included 17 top five finishes. He also finished with 27 top 10 finishes and picked up a leading 12 stage wins. This was a very impressive season and he will now be the favourite to follow up next season.

    Second placed finish went to Martin Truex, Jr, who picked up 42 points in the playoffs. From his original season of 36 starts, he picked up seven wins, 15 top five finishes and 24 top 10 finishes. This meant he finished with nine stage wins in total this season, which meant another very impressive showing. He will also be expected to be challenging for the title again next season.

    In third was Kevin Harvick, who picked up 28 points in the playoffs and 5033 in total. From his 36 starts, he finished with four wins, 15 top five finishes and 25 top ten finishes. This meant he finished with six stage wins and just missing out on the title. Denny Hamlin was then fourth, despite a very impressive season and 37 points in the playoffs. From his 36 starts, he finished with six wins, 19 top five finishes, 24 top ten finishes and six stage wins in total. Both drivers will be hopeful they can again challenge next season and even possibly land the competition.

  • Alex Bowman has breakout year in 2019 with first Cup Series win

    Alex Bowman scored his first NASCAR Cup Series win in 2019 driving his Rick Hendrick Motorsports No.88 Chevrolet to victory lane at Chicagoland Speedway on June 30.

    In his second full-time season with HMS, the 26-year-old also earned seven top-fives and recorded 12 top-10 finishes. When combined with an average finish of 14.36 and 200 laps led, he had his best career season to date, ending the season ranked 12th in the standings.

    Bowman showed hints of what was to come with three back-to-back runner-up finishes in the spring at Talladega Superspeedway, Dover International Speedway and Kansas Speedway. The win at Chicagoland locked him into the Playoffs for the second consecutive year and Bowman was able to advance to the Round of 12 for the first time.

    His career path has shown a steady progression particularly after becoming a member of the first NASCAR Next class in 2011. In 2012, Bowman won four races in the ARCA Series which led to his first Xfinity Series start for Turner Motorsports at Chicagoland in September.

    The following year he made 32 Xfinity starts with Robby Benton Racing, capturing two poles, two top fives and six top 10s. He finished the 2013 season ranked 11th.

    His Cup Series debut was with BK Racing in the 2014 Daytona 500, finishing 23rd. It was Bowman’s first full-time season in the series. His best finish of the year was 13th at Daytona in July. In 2015 he moved to Tommy Baldwin Racing with a best finish of 16th at Talladega.

    2016 saw Bowman on the move again, driving in nine Xfinity races for JR Motorsports. His best finishes of the season included three top-fives, seven top 10s and one pole.

    Bowman’s big break came in mid-2016 when Dale Earnhardt Jr. was sidelined with issues resulting from a concussion and he was selected to fill in for 10 races. During that time, he claimed three top-10s and garnered the attention of the Rick Hendrick organization. Hendrick Motorsports signed Bowman in 2016 and he soon became an integral part of the organization. While there were no openings to drive, he worked behind the scenes in the HMS simulation program and participated in on-track testing.

    His dedication and work ethic paid off. After Earnhardt retired at the end of the 2017 season, Bowman was signed as the new driver of the No. 88, earning a spot with one of NASCAR’s premier teams.

    “Alex impressed the heck out of us last year with his talent, poise and professionalism,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “He stepped up in a very demanding situation and showed that he can run with the best and compete for wins. His ability to stay focused through it all, and the way he’s handled himself since then, has shown a lot of character.
