  • Newgarden claims victory at St. Pete, Dixon gathers Sixth IndyCar Championship

Newgarden claims victory at St. Pete, Dixon gathers Sixth IndyCar Championship

Josef Newgarden would claim victory for Team Penske to conclude the 2020 IndyCar season. Scott Dixon finished on the podium with a third-place run to claim his sixth IndyCar championship.

“Happy to get a win out here,” Newgarden stated. “So proud of my team, they were on it all year. I don’t think I would change one thing that we did and they were perfect all season in my eyes. Just short, but a decent way to go into the off season with another victory and to hold our head up high.”

Will Power and Alexander Rossi would lead the front row to the green flag. Power would pull a second gap over Rossi as the field tackled the Floridan street course.

Laps later Rossi took the lead over Power as the No. 12 would struggle with downshifting. Colton Herta would later run down the Penske car as the No. 88 would pass Power on the outside into Turn One. James Hinchcliffe would follow in tow and also take a spot away from Power.

Scott McLaughlin and Felix Rosenqvist would be one of the first drivers to pit early on. Rinus Veekay would also come in laps later. Not many would pit early on, but would keep their cars out on the track.

As the drivers hit the Lap 30 mark, Dixon would bring his car down pit road. A great number of the drivers would pit laps later to ignite the pit cycle.

Rosenqvist suffered a puncture on Lap 33 after contact with Santino Ferrucci. For Newgarden, he would be able to eke out Power as the cycle of stops concluded. As a result, he would be upwards in the fifth position, while Dixon would remain in 11th.

Power’s issues would continue to grow as he would bring out the yellow on Lap 37. His car would go up into the marbles and hit the wall, sustaining massive left side damage to his No. 12, knocking him out of the running.

Rossi would lead the field on the restart from Herta. Another yellow would shortly fly when Ferrucci’s No. 18 crashed into the Turn 2 wall. Conor Daly would experience some issues under yellow as his No. 20 would have a puncture on the left rear tire.

On the restart, Rossi would have a good launch on Herta. The No. 88 would drop backward as Hinchcliffe would reel him in. At the back of the pack, calamity would strike as McLaughlin and Veekay would crash in Turn 1. The No. 3 would look underneath but spin out into the path of Veekay.

Rossi would maintain his ground on the launch while Rosenqvist would try and get his lap back. Dixon would be stuck in a battle between Jack Harvey, Rahal, and Oliver Askew, with Dixon passing the three of them to get upward to the sixth position.

Oliver Askew would get past Ryan Hunter-Reay for the ninth position. Hunter-Reay would continue to drop as he would fall outside the Top 10 at the end of Lap 54. Marco Andretti would begin to lurk forward as he would pass Rahal into Turn 1 to take seventh away shortly afterwards.

Herta would overdrive the corner, losing two spots to Hinchcliffe and Newgarden.

The No. 1 would come down pit road on Lap 66. Dixon would come in a lap later. Once again green flag pit stops would ignite.

On Lap 70 Rossi would spin out of Turn 3, hitting the inside wall and bringing out the full course caution. Rossi’s crash reshuffled the order as many drivers would come down pit road.

Herta would have the launch over Hinchcliffe with Alex Palou in third. Andretti and Sato would make contact, cutting the No. 98’s tire as he would crash into the barriers. A full course yellow would fly.

Hinchcliffe would spin out under yellow in Turn 14 and hit Harvey’s car after attempting to merge back onto the racing surface.

With 21 laps to go Herta would lead the field once again. However, Palou and Newgarden would pass the No. 88. Newgarden would muscle his way to the lead. Dixon would move his way up to third while Sebastien Bourdais and Simon Pagenaud would collide but with not much damage. Askew would hit the barriers after contact with Sato, bringing out another yellow.

Newgarden would lead the way with 16 laps to go with Herta, Dixon, and Pato O’Ward rounding out the top spots. O’Ward would march up to second with a dive underneath Herta. On Lap 86 O’Ward would look for the lead into Turn 1 but to no avail. Herta would go wide and would drop outside the Top 10.

With six laps to go Palou would hit pit road, Rosenqvist would also pit as they would have to top off on their fuel.

Newgarden pulled the gap over O’Ward as he would win the finale at St. Petersburg. Dixon would finish in third and claim his sixth championship.

“It feels really cool to finally celebrate something here,” Dixon said. “We have a lot of memories, some of them not so great. It’s nice to be in this situation to celebrate with loved ones. For me, it’s just the people that make this possible and this journey we’ve been on for so long now with this team. This is a great way to top it off this year.”

Newgarden’s win marks the 17th win of his IndyCar career. Dixon’s championship run has made him just one championship short of tying the record set by A.J. Foyt’s seven.

Speedway Media mourns the passing of Ed Coombs

Speedway Media (SM) is saddened by the loss of one of our founding members, Ed Coombs. Ed was instrumental in the early stages of SM for gathering and developing the resources, relationships, and respect among the NASCAR community. He fought hard every day to make online coverage recognized and respected during times in the early 2000s when online coverage was not. Ed’s hard work eventually paid off and SM and many other outlets have him, in part, to thank.

Ed loved photography and NASCAR was a part of it. You can view some of Ed’s great shots that span over two decades on our photography page here.

Along with photography Ed also contributed his thoughts throughout the season. His weekend stories and opinions can be viewed here.

Ed helped out as an editor and publisher when needed, but he was our credential guy for 20 years. If you ever needed an opinion or just a straight answer, Ed was the guy. His support, advice, and encouragement were integral to the success of Speedway Media. Ed, you will be greatly missed.

    Ed’s Facebook post.

Sending our heartfelt condolences out to the entire Coombs family during this time. Ed, we will never forget you, RIP my friend.

The funeral and memorial details have not been finalized at the time of this post. We will update the arrangements when they become available.

Allmendinger wins the Xfinity Series race at Charlotte

AJ Allmendinger captured the win in Saturday’s Drive for the cure 250 Xfinity series playoff race in overtime at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval. This was Allmendinger’s fifth of his Xfinity Series career and the second win this season.

“Oh my God, I don’t know what to say,” Allmendinger said on his radio.

Stage two winner Chase Briscoe had the lead on the final restart but spun in Turn 2, allowing Allmendinger to take over the lead.

“Chase Briscoe was doing a fantastic job. I didn’t really have anything for him after a couple laps but I knew that final restart, I was going to do whatever I could.” Allmendinger said.

Briscoe finished in the 18th position.

“The driver just made a mistake. In the conditions like this you’ve got to be at 100 percent and I tried going 110 and it bit me, so very unfortunate. That one is gonna sting for a long time. I felt like I did my job for about 95 percent of the day right and I just knew if AJ was beside me getting into three, he had been running me up so much I tried throttling up and I was in first gear and I just hit the puddle and it spun me out.” Briscoe said.

Noah Gragson finished second, followed by Daniel Hemric in third, Alex Labbe fourth and Ross Chastain rounds out the top-five.

Harrison Burton finished in 33rd position, Brandon Brown 26th, Riley Herbst 12th, and Michael Annett finished 9th and they were eliminated from the Xfinity Series playoffs.

The Xfinity series begins the Round of 8 at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday October 17th at Kansas Speedway.

  • Clint Bowyer’s retirement was a surprise

Clint Bowyer’s retirement was a surprise

In this strange year we are living in, the hits keep on coming. I have never known in 50 years of following the sport so many changes. Yes, Jimmie Johnson will hang up his fire suit and maybe go try IndyCar racing. Racing teams are closing their doors. Drivers continue to change seats. One is Clint Bowyer. He announced today that he will retire as the driver of the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford Mustang at the end of the 2020 season.
    .
It is a given that his seat will not stay open long. The rumor mill is that NASCAR Xfinity points leader Chase Briscoe will get the ride but nothing has been released by SHR as of this writing. With the exit of Bowyer, one can assume Chase Briscoe will get his wish and head to the Cup series.

This writer has always found Bowyer to be a breath of fresh air. In his time at Richard Childress Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, and SHR, among others, he approached racing with humor and a homespun way of presenting his views on life and racing. He will join the Fox Sports NASCAR coverage, a job that suits him well. He will fill the void left by Darrell Waltrip in the booth and at the track. Congratulations to him.

Bowyer will close the book on his racing career, and we will never forget his antics on and off the track. His mad run on foot to catch up with Jeff Gordon at Phoenix and his typical Kansas inspired language. His 10 wins at the Cup level were not a huge number but the 41-year-old driver was a joy to watch. Luckily, we will have him for half the season each year on television. Good luck to him.

  • Buescher Wins First Stage, Finishes 6th in Triple Overtime at Talladega

Buescher Wins First Stage, Finishes 6th in Triple Overtime at Talladega

LINCOLN, Ala. (Oct. 4, 2020) – Chris Buescher capped off a masterful superspeedway performance at Talladega on Sunday afternoon by navigating a chaotic triple overtime to finish sixth in his No. 17 SUNNYD Ford Mustang, his third consecutive top ten run. The young driver led a career-high 15 laps in the race, which featured a track-record 13 cautions, and paced the field early to win the first stage of the event.

Buescher rolled off the grid 15th and maintained his position early as three cautions were displayed by lap 25. When the scheduled competition caution flag waved at lap 25, the driver was scored 18th with reports of good balance. The team elected to pit for four fresh tires and fuel and restarted 22nd with 30 laps to go in the stage. Buescher made quick work of driving through the field and was up to 13th by lap 41. With just 10 laps to go in the stage, Buescher charged to the front of the field before a wreck in the last lap of the stage ended the stage under caution, with the No. 17 in the lead position. The segment victory marked Buescher’s first stage win of his NASCAR career.

The team visited pit road for four tires and fuel at the stage break and restarted third for the second stage of racing. A few laps later, the caution flag waved when Buescher was running second. The team decided against another trip to pit road and inherited the lead, which Buescher held for 15 laps until falling to second when the seventh caution flag of the race waved. The team took the opportunity to pit for fresh tires and fuel and restarted 16th on the bottom lane. Buescher got shuffled back as far as 18th but artfully avoided a huge wreck at lap 108. Buescher was scored 10th as the red flag was displayed for clean-up. Pit stops cycled through under caution, but the No. 17 team stayed out to gain valuable track position and took the green-white checkered flag in third to gain eight stage points.

The Prosper, Texas native drove his way down pit road to pit for four tires, tape and fuel. He told the SUNNYD team that he was happy with the balance of his Ford and didn’t want any handling adjustments. The driver restarted just outside of the top ten and was up to fifth by lap 130. At lap 141, Buescher tried to make a move to the inside line but was hung out to dry and fell backwards without drafting help. He patiently found a hole in the line of cars running single file on the wall and settled into the 19th position. The first of a series of caution flags waved with 40 to go and the team pitted for four more tires and fuel.

Restarting 12th with 37 to go, Buescher drove his way up to the front and was running sixth when the 12th caution flag of the race was displayed. Pit strategy was key for the No. 17 team as the team stayed out for the next cautions to restart third for the final overtime period. When the green flag waved, Buescher fought to avoid another wreck and ended up taking the checkered flag 6th in triple overtime. The finish marked Buescher’s ninth top-10 result of the season, and his third in a row after last weekend’s ninth-place finish at Las Vegas.

Buescher and the No. 17 team look to carry their momentum next weekend at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval on Sunday, October 11 at 2:30 p.m. EST on NBC, PRN and SiriusXM Channel 90.

  • It’s time to go about crowning a Champion

It’s time to go about crowning a Champion

It has been a frantic season. Three, sometimes four races a week were the norm. Now, we are a little over two months away from crowning champions in NASCAR’s three national series. The old show started out with “they said it couldn’t be done.” Well, it was, thanks to NASCAR paying attention to the scientists and proper safeguards. They are to be applauded for that. They did it right from the beginning.

Saturday night, there was a tremendous elimination race at Daytona. It was a good one, but it saw the retiring Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time Cup champion, be eliminated. Johnson was caught up in a problem, not of his doing, but this is common at what is known as “plate races.” The big question for fans and those in charge amounts to a question about should these plate races, where anyone can win and anyone can crash out, be an elimination race? For many, it is not. Fans love the races at Talladega and Daytona, but this writer does not think it is fair for competitors. Yes, run those tracks, but give them a race to recover. I can only think about the guy who comes in solid in the Playoffs, gets wrecked early in a “Big One” and fails to make the cut, if he had 26 second-place finishes. Yes, that is extreme but possible. Let me know what you think.

The Cup drivers will be negotiating Darlington, Richmond, Bristol, Las Vegas, Talladega, Charlotte, Kansas, Texas, Martinsville, and Phoenix. Eliminations races will be held at Bristol, the ROVAL at Charlotte and Martinsville. The Final Four race for the championship is at Phoenix.

Who will win? I have no idea. Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex, Jr., and Brad Keselowski have dominated, but who knows what will happen?

The biggest surprises for me were wins by Cole Custer and the guy who beat out Johnson for the Playoffs, seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson, so you never know. Watching will be fun. My only fear is a Covid-19 outbreak. So far, so good. So, buckle up let’s see what happens.

  • Cindric wins the UNOH 188 at Daytona Road Course

Cindric wins the UNOH 188 at Daytona Road Course

Austin Cindric won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race UNOH 188 on Saturday at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course. Cindric led 21 of the 52 laps in route to his fifth Xfinity Series win of the season and the seventh of his career.

“I’m not sure anyone was really happy with their race car. Unfortunately, I have a tough perspective of driving really fast high-grip race cars at this track, but great credit to my team, the MoneyLion guys, and everyone that puts this together. Ford Performance, Roush Yates Engines, obviously everyone at Team Penske for working hard.” Cindric said.

Cindric joins Sam Ard (1983) as the only drivers to win five times in six Xfinity Series races.

“Yeah, it’s incredible,” Cindric said, “and takes great race cars and executing races. I’m proud to be driving this 22 car and contending for wins week to week. There’s still a lot of work to do, but this is great for the points for sure.

“That’s five wins on the year and back-to-back now. I’m really proud of that. I didn’t feel like I drove my best today, but we executed there at the end where it counts and that’s what makes these races so difficult to win.”

Cindric led all 15 laps from the pole to win Stage 1. Chase Briscoe won Stage 2, taking the advantage on Lap 18 when Noah Gragson spun from the lead and then held off a hard-charging Cindric. Briscoe, who led a race-high 26 laps but was caught in a multi-car restart incident with only eight laps remaining, was unable to complete the race and finished 29th.

Brandon Jones finished second, Gragson third, AJ Allmendinger fourth and Andy Lally rounded out the top five.

There are seven races remaining before the Xfinity Series Playoffs begin, with 12 positions available. Cindric, Briscoe, Gragson, Jones, Harrison Burton and Justin Haley have secured their spots in the playoff field with victories. Cindric leads the standings by 48 points over Briscoe.

Up next: The NASCAR Xfinity Series heads to Dover where they will compete Saturday and Sunday. Both races will be broadcast on NBCSN/NBC Sports App, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Cindric wins the Henry 180 at Road America

Austin Cindric took the lead with three laps remaining and held off veteran road-course ace A.J. Allmendinger to win Saturday‘s NASCAR Xfinity Series Henry 180 race on the historic 4.048-mile Road America road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

“We were able to get around and once AJ got clear I knew I was running qualifying laps. This car was really fast on short runs. Those guys brought a great package and I tried to mind my p’s and q’s and put together two of my best laps to come home with the win. I am over the moon about it. This is the first place I ran an Xfinity race and I feel like every time I have come here we have had a shot to win. It feels great to do it and do it in front of fans and a home crowd from Menards.” Cindric said.

The Mooresville, N.C. native led a total of 19 laps of the 45 laps in route to his fourth victory this season and the third time on a road course in his No. 22 Menards/Richmond Mustang.

Chase Briscoe finished third, Kaz Grala fourth and IMSA driver Andy Lally finished fifth followed by Noah Gragson, Ross Chastain, Preston Pardus, Ryan Sieg, and Michael Annett rounded out the top-10.

Justin Haley won the stage one in a one-lap shootout and AJ Allmendinger won stage two under caution.

The race was stopped for a little over a hour and a half for weather near the end of the first stage.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series returns on Saturday, August 15 with the UNOH 188 at the Daytona Road Course with coverage starting at 3:00 p.m. ET NBCSN, MRN, and Sirius XM NASCAR Radio. This will be the first time that the NASCAR Xfinity Series has raced on the iconic road course.

  • Texas 500 – how did the race unfold?

Texas 500 – how did the race unfold?

Who doesn’t take risks doesn’t achieve success as Austin Dillon won the NASCAR Cup race in Texas. Richard Childress’s cars used an unexpected strategy to finish 1-2 for the first time since October 2011.

Aric Almirola again got pole position in the draw and did not concede first place to the competitive yellow on the 20th lap. He stayed on the track with Harvick and the latter quickly came forward.

Thirty laps later, Almirola was finally able to get close to Harvick and overtake him again, and the two of them went to the pit stop, losing first place to Martin Truex. However, Almirola received a fine for crossing a solid line on the exit from the pit road and eventually lost two laps.

Meanwhile, Martin Truex did not have time to stop at the pit stop and he ran out of fuel. The leader literally on the circle was Kyle Bush, who was immediately overtaken by Ryan Blaney. In the end, Ryan won the first segment of the race.

    The second half

The second segment began with a fight between Kyle Busch and Blaney on a restart, from which Kyle emerged victorious, but not for long. After five laps, Jimmie Johnson lost control and flew a rear bumper into the wall, triggering yellow flags and finishing off his chances. In the first segment, Johnson was good, he was driving in the top 10, and then because of a penalty on the pit stop for breaking safety rules again from the tail came to the top 10. And because of a stupid mistake, he crashed a fast car. Once again. However, despite all this Jimmy remained to fight for points and at the finish was 26th.

Denny Hamlin emerged as the leader after the restart, but Ryan Blaney got ahead again and pulled off confidently before the pit stops. After a pit stop cycle that lasted 30 laps, Blaney was back in front and won the second segment by a six-second lead.

The third segment began with a blockage. A lap after the restart, Kurt Busch hooked Almirola, pushed Kyle Busch into the grass, and Kyle Busch sent Truex into the wall. The race had to be stopped for 12 minutes to clear the rubble.

On the 225th lap, the race continued with the struggles of Hamlin, Keselowski and Blaney. Ten laps later, Ryan managed to throw Hamlin off his tail and started to come off, but John Hunter Nemechek didn’t let him. He flew off the track on the way out of the second turn, and then hung yellow flags.

This race in Texas was widely anticipated not only in the United States but also in Canada, where people are gradually starting to engage in racing. This is mostly thanks to American pioneers of the sport in general. As they started to grow all over the US, it quickly dawned on them that there would soon be very little space to grow further, so they started looking outward. Canada was most definitely an obvious choice, but having the population of a large state was not really appealing for the pioneers.

Therefore, some additional help was called in to convince them. You see, Canadians are a lot less reserved when it comes to making sports a bit more fun. Betting in the country has been allowed ever since the British days and is not frowned upon too much. With the collective effort of familiar NASCAR faces and a few Canadian casino bonus offers, the sport managed to engrave itself within the local community’s watch list.

Unfortunately though, the betting options lost their spark a bit after years of government regulation and the traffic that this particular race generated left many sportsbooks disappointed.

    More details

The race lasted only two laps: after that Ty Dillon flew into the outer wall of the track, hooking William Byron on the way.

The last pit stops started with the leaders, but after the stupid accident, which locked many leaders on the lag lap. At the time, Quin Houff, who was eight laps behind, suddenly decided to go down to the pit stop from the outside line. Instead, he flew into the passing Christopher Bell and Matt DiBenedetto and smashed the car against the wall of the fourth corner.

Brad Keselowski used this occasion after the race to talk about the possible downgrade of especially dangerous riders, and that makes sense. Before joining the Cup, Quin Houff had only 15 races in the ARCA and Xfinity in two years, with no success. And then there was the money, and enough money to buy out the driver’s contract signed just a few weeks earlier. NASCAR has already promised to discuss the situation with the queen, but perhaps the introduction of minimum barriers, such as one full season in the Xfinity or division of pickups, would help to raise the average level of riders.

Everyone who did not come to the pit stop took the opportunity, and on the front row were drivers of Richard Childress Racing. Austin Dillon changed only two tires, and Tyler Reddick just refueled. Dillon’s crew chief Justin Alexander said after the race: “I honestly didn’t expect to be on the front row at the first restart and was shocked by what others were doing on pit stops. I’m surprised that only we and someone else took two tires and Reddick just refueled.”

In general, there were a lot of questions about tires in the race. According to Joey Logano, there was wear and tear, but the circles did not become slower. It felt as if someone was playing a recently-opened race game under NASCAR license and before the race turned off tire wear in the settings. During the race, there were a lot of pit stops with the change of two wheels, and some were just refuelling. In social networks appeared photos of tires, on which Almirola drove 60 laps, but they looked like new, even the seams were not completely erased, not to mention the real wear.

    A resounding finish

In the end, Austin Dillon overtook his partner on the restart, but it was not the end. Denny Hamlin lost control in the heat of the fight and also flew to the wall, taking Alex Bowman with him. After that, Hamlin crashed again.

The final restart was just two laps before the finish. Behind Dillon and Reddick were Logano and Kyle Busch. Austin had a great restart, and the competition between Busch and Logano for third place allowed the drivers to come off and finish on the first and second places respectively. After the win, Austin Dillon praised his team and allowed himself a bit of bragging.

Tyler Reddick, who is remembered in Xfinity as a racer who likes to take another chance, showed that he has changed towards working for the team.

The edge of the playoff zone has changed again. It’s time for Byron, Johnson, and Jones to think about winning because at least one or two of them won’t make the playoffs, depending on Dillon’s position by the end of the regular season.  It’s especially worth thinking about Jones without a contract for next year and with Christopher Bell around the corner.
