Definition of Close Finishes? Just Look at Talladega Superspeedway’s Spring Races Since 2010

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Since 2010, the spring Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races at Talladega Superspeedway, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, have shown what the world’s largest and greatest track is all about – 200 mph speeds, three- and four-wide, 10 rows deep competition and absolute nail-biting, close finishes by a matter of feet, sometimes even inches.

In seven of the nine races (two races ended under caution) conducted thus far since ’10, the average margin of victory by a driver is an incredible .129 second, with the best a NASCAR premier series record of .002 by Jimmie Johnson in 2011. This weekend (April 26-28), NASCAR’s Most Competitive track, created as a palace of speed and tight racing by Bill France Sr. in 1969, will host its 100th Monster Energy Series race. And, if the last nine years are any indication, fans have a lot to look forward to.

The below shows just how close the competition has been at each of the springtime races at the 2.66-mile venue during the 2010s:

    • 2010: Driving for Richard Childress Racing, Kevin Harvick, with a last-lap pass coming out of the tri-oval, beats Jamie McMurray by just .011 second to claim his first – and only win to this point – at Talladega.
    • 2011: Johnson comes from fifth coming out of Turn 4 on the final lap to nip Clint Bowyer by an exhilarating .002 second. In addition, the event holds a NASCAR record-tying 88 lead changes.
    • 2012: Brad Keselowski holds on to outduel Kyle Busch by a whopping .304 second (say in jest) to capture his second Talladega Superspeedway triumph.
    • 2013: Driving for an underfunded team, David Ragan stuns the racing world, with drafting help from his teammate David Gilliland, and comes out of nowhere to win the spring event, passing leader Carl Edwards on the final lap.
    • 2014: Danica Patrick becomes the first female racer to lead laps at TSS while Denny Hamlin goes to Gatorade Victory Lane, giving Joe Gibbs Racing its fourth ‘Dega win.
    • 2015: Fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. wins the GEICO 500 after being absent from Talladega’s Gatorade Victory Lane for 11 years. He edges teammate Johnson by .158 second.
    • 2016: In his first MENCS start at TSS, rookie Chase Elliott, driving the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet that Jeff Gordon made famous at the 2.66-mile venue, claims the pole position for the GEICO 500, but it’s Keselowski scoring his fourth TSS Cup Victory.
    • 2017: Ricky Stenhouse Jr. becomes the 11 driver in history to capture his first career triumph at Talladega, with a thrilling .095 second victory over McMurray. In two races in the 2010s, McMurray finishes runner-up twice by a mere average of 0.53 second.
    • 2018: Joey Logano picks up his third Cup Series win a Talladega, his first to come in the spring, over Kurt Busch. The win locks him into the season-ending NASCAR Playoffs that eventually leads him to the championship.

During the nine-race stretch of spring events at Talladega, Ford claims four wins, followed by Chevy with three, Toyota with one and Dodge with one. Gordon leads the way with three top-starting spots.

The GEICO 500 will be the anchor event of a tripleheader weekend that starts this Friday (April 26) with the General Tire 200 for the ARCA Menards Series (which has been a staple of Talladega Superspeedway since October of ’69). The MoneyLion 300 for the NASCAR Xfinity Series is set for Saturday (April 27) and Sunday’s (April 28) GEICO 500 gets the green flag at 1 p.m. CDT. About Talladega Superspeedway
Talladega Superspeedway – which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year – is the most competitive race track on the NASCAR schedule (record 88 lead changes in 188 laps), the highest-banked (33 degrees) and the longest (2.66 miles) as well as the most fun and fan-friendly. Talladega offers something for everyone, including hundreds of acres of free camping, amazing kids tickets and college student prices, along with special offers for military members, first responders, teachers and educators. The historic venue, which opened in 1969, is deemed NASCAR’s “Party Capital” thanks to the track’s infamous infield, the traditional Saturday Night Infield Concert on event weekends and renowned Talladega Blvd., home of the “Big One on the Blvd.” party. It’s the site of the most comfortable seats in motorsports, large ISM Vision HD video boards lining the frontstretch and numerous pre-race activities for fans on race day, including special Kids VIP opportunities. For ticket information, visit www.talladegasuperspeedway.com or call 855-518-RACE (7223).

The track, along with its parent company, International Speedway Corporation, announced last year Transformation – The Talladega Superspeedway Infield Project presented by Graybar. The approximate $50 million redevelopment endeavor is part of ISC’s long-term capital allocation plan and reinvestment into its major motorsports complexes. The project, highlighted by a one-of-a-kind Talladega Garage Experience, will feature “up-close” access, interactive attractions and enhanced amenities for fans, sponsors, teams and stakeholders in the iconic Talladega infield. Full completion of the modernized project is scheduled for October 2019. Fans can learn more about the project and view the progress 24/7 via the construction cam by visiting www.talladegasuperspeedway.com/transformation.

RFR Heads to Sweet Home Alabama for Superspeedway Racing

Coming off the first break of the season for Easter, Roush Fenway Racing takes its Fords to Sweet Home Alabama as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) rolls into the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway this weekend. RFR has eight wins all-time at Talladega including the most recent by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in 2017.

    Running Clear Across Alabama

Roush Fenway has seen its fair share of success at the Alabama track, amassing 265 starts, eight wins, 43 top-five’s and 89 top-10s across NASCAR’s three major touring series. Roush machines have also tallied eight poles, including four in cup action, and have led more than 1400 laps.

    Winning in Greenbow

Roush Fenway has won in all three of NASCAR’s major series at Talladega. The team won its first race at Talladega in the MENCS event in the spring of 1995. Former Roush Fenway driver Mark Martin won for the organization in all three series at the 2.66-mile oval.

Most recently, Stenhouse piloted his Fifth Third Bank Ford Fusion to victory lane two years ago when the MENCS rolled through Talladega for the organization’s eighth win at the historic track.

    Roush Fenway Unrestricted

Roush Fenway has run a total of 414 MENCS races with restrictor plates, earning 12 victories, 75 top-fives, 146 top-10s and has led 1892 laps.

    Fastest Chicken in the South

Former Roush Fenway driver Mark Martin won the fastest Cup race ever recorded on May 10, 1997 at Talladega piloting the No. 6 Ford. Martin, who held off NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt, started from the 18th position and led 47 laps en route to the victory. The race saw 26 lead changes and had an average speed of 188.354 mph.

    Sweet Home (Fifth Third) Alabama

Fifth Third Bank, one of the primary partners on Stenhouse’s No. 17 Ford, has been a share of luck for he and the team as of late. Both of Stenhouse’s victories in 2017, which catapulted him into the MENCS Playoffs, came in a Fifth Third paint scheme. The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native’s first win in the cup series came at Talladega in this race two years ago, sporting the blue Fifth Third colors.

    Tale of the Tape

Roush Fenway has started 206 MENCS races at Talladega with 72 top-10 and 36 top-five finishes along with four poles. Former drivers Mark Martin (1995, 1997), Jamie McMurray (2009) and Matt Kenseth (2012) are responsible for RFR’s combined five Cup wins and overall a Jack Roush Ford has led 1446 laps at the 2.66-mile track.

    Where They Rank

Coming off Richmond and an off weekend, Ryan Newman sits inside the playoff picture, listed 15th, but tied with Austin Dillon for 14th in driver points. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., sits 18th but just 12 points separate the 14th-19th place drivers.

Cuttin’, Honkin’ and Rollin’ into Talladega! Race Week has Officially Begun with New Tunnel Grand Opening for Fans

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Horns were honking and the RVs were rolling through the new Turn 3 Oversized Vehicle Tunnel at Talladega Superspeedway Wednesday as NASCAR drivers Jeffrey Earnhardt and Chase Briscoe assisted in the ribbon cutting ceremony as part of the “official” Grand Opening for thousands of fans to enter the track’s iconic infield.

Joining long-time track Chairman Grant Lynch to help kick off the track’s race week for an action-packed tripleheader this weekend, Briscoe and Earnhardt proceeded to lead the extended trail of infield campers through the new tunnel, which is the initial phase of Transformation – The Talladega Superspeedway Infield Project presented by Graybar. Briscoe drove the official Ford Edge ST Pace Car, followed by Earnhardt in a Toyota Tundra truck, with John Ray’s, patriotic Big Rig, a tradition at the 2.66-mile venue during the National Anthem in all pre-race ceremonies, in tow. Once inside, the trio greeted a host of fans who made their way into the mammoth track.

Earnhardt, the grandson of 10-time record Talladega winner Dale Earnhardt Sr., and Briscoe will both be competing in Saturday’s (April 27) MoneyLion 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series race while Earnhardt will contend in Sunday’s GEICO 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event (April 28) for Xtreme Concepts Racing where he will make his 2019 debut.

“The new tunnel makes it way more convenient not only for the teams but especially for the race fans,” said Briscoe, in his first full-time season behind the wheel of the No. 98 Ford for Stewart-Haas Racing. “To me, Talladega is already the best fan experience….when you come here you can hang out, it’s just a good time, and now for all the improvements that we’re seeing it’s just going to make it even better. I’m looking forward to coming back in the fall to see the complete renovation (the completion of the Transformation Infield Project). The tunnel is a huge deal and a big part of that too, so I’m looking forward to coming back in the fall as well and seeing it all done.”

“I think it’s incredible,” said Earnhardt, whose best finish in three 2019 starts in the Xfinity Series is a sixth at Atlanta. “For the fans, this is going to be incredible, whether you might have trouble getting here and you get here late, now you can just drive on in. It’s only going to continue to make the fan experience that much better. I’m real excited about it. I know us on the team side are going to be excited about it and I know the fans are going to love it as well.”

The new tunnel, which is more than 28 foot wide and 16 foot high, is capable of allowing fans’ large recreational vehicles as well as race team haulers to enter and exit the track simultaneously with ease. It will be open 24 hours this weekend.

The approximately $50 million Transformation Infield Project presented by Graybar is part of International Speedway Corporation’s (Talladega’s parent company) long-term capital allocation plan and reinvestment into its major motorsports complexes. The culmination of Transformation will occur this October and will allow fans to be immersed into the sport of NASCAR with the one-of-a-kind Talladega Garage Experience, which will feature “up-close” access, interactive attractions and enhanced amenities for fans, sponsors, teams and stakeholders in the iconic Talladega infield.

  • Menard, Quick Lane Team Carry Momentum To Talladega

Menard, Quick Lane Team Carry Momentum To Talladega

After two successful weekends on the short tracks followed by the Easter weekend break, Paul Menard and the No. 21 Quick Lane team head to one of the biggest tracks, Talladega Superspeedway where an all-new rules package will be used.

Gone are the traditional restrictor plates that have been used at Talladega and its sister track, Daytona International Speedway, for more than 30 years. In their place will be a tapered spacer, the same device that has been used on intermediate tracks this season to reduce horsepower.

Further changes for Talladega include a taller rear spoiler, nine inches instead of the eight used at other tracks this season, and a bolt-on track bar mount which will raise the rear of the car one inch to 12 inches.

There has been limited testing of the new package, which leaves lots of unknowns heading into this weekend’s GEICO 500.

“I’m not sure what to expect,” Menard said. “It’s a different package from what we’ve run there for years.

“We don’t know how the cars will draft, or whether we’ll end up running single-file or in tandem.”

He said he expects to see some drivers trying the tandem moves of several years back, where two drivers hooked up nose to tail to gain speed.

“I expect there will be some tandem drafting, but I don’t know how long two drivers can stay hooked up,” he said.

One thing Menard is sure of is that there will be more emphasis put on practice, which is a change from previous Talladega weekends, where teams tended to try to limit practice time in hopes of avoiding damage to their cars from a crash.

“We’ve got to see what the car needs and wants to go fast, so we’ll practice more than we’d normally like to since we’ll be putting ourselves at risk,” he said. “There are going to be some interesting practices.”

Menard said he and the Quick Lane team are headed to Talladega on a roll after strong runs at Bristol and Martinsville, where they had finishes of sixth and 10th, gained five spots in the standings to 16th place and scored Stage points in five of six Stages in the past three races, dating back to Texas Motor Speedway.

“We had a couple of good runs on short tracks, and now we go the biggest, fastest track we race on,” he said. “We have confidence and momentum. We just have to keep it going.”

Qualifying for the GEICO 500 is set for Saturday at 3:40 p.m. (4:40 Eastern Time), and the race is scheduled to start just after 1 p.m (2 p.m. Eastern Time), with TV coverage on FOX.

Richmond Recap: Denny Hamlin overcame a pre-race penalty and a difficult-handling car April 13 at Richmond Raceway to earn his fourth straight top-five finish. Hamlin started the race in 30th after his 18th-place qualifying position was disallowed due to pre-race inspection infractions. But once the green flag flew, he went to work in the #11 FedEx Ground Toyota and never looked back. Despite having a tight-handling car, he gradually climbed his way through the field thanks to solid adjustments ordered by crew chief Chris Gabehart and a fast-working pit crew. He finished Stage 1 in 20th and Stage 2 in 14th. The FedEx Camry was handling its best in Stage 3, when Hamlin eventually climbed into the top five. He finished the race in fifth for his sixth top-five result of the season.

Talladega Preview: The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will be heading to Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, April 29, for 500 miles of action around the Alabama tri-oval. Hamlin will be looking for his second career victory at Talladega, after capturing the checkered flag in 2014. Your team faced some adversity in Richmond. How do you feel our team responded in order to secure the top-five finish?

“We had our work cut out for us. We started in the back, and our car was tough to handle in traffic. But, we made our FedEx Toyota better as the night went on, and our pit crew brought their A-game and gained us some extra spots on pit road. It was a great comeback for our entire team.”

What are your thoughts as the Cup Series heads from your hometown to a superspeedway at Talladega?

“I’m really proud of the effort our team displayed in Richmond, and it felt great to make such a comeback in front of my hometown crowd. We’re excited to build off that momentum and energy and are ready to take on our next challenge at Talladega.”

    From the Driver’s Seat:

Matt DiBenedetto: “Talladega is a race weekend I’m really looking forward to, and I think we all do as a team for a few different reasons. One of them being the fact that at Daytona to start off the season, we ran really well and had one of the best cars, so clearly this team knows how to crank the most speed out of our Camry at the superspeedways. I feel like I’ve always been a good superspeedway racer over the years and I’ve worked really hard to always try and put myself in a position to have a shot at winning those races. This weekend will be interesting since we’ll have some new challenges with the new aero package at Talladega, so the style of racing will be different than we’ve experienced there in the past. It’s been a season so far with a lot of unknowns going to all these tracks with the new package for the first time, but I think this weekend will be a fun one for our group and one that we’ve been looking forward to ever since we left Daytona.”

    From the Pit Box:

Mike Wheeler: “Talladega might be the most interesting track we go to this year with the new aero package compared to what people expect heading into this weekend. Ultimately, Daytona notes from the start of the season are thrown out the window because that package is completely different than what we’re running this weekend. We’re hoping to keep a decent notebook from Texas and some of the other tracks that had the same 550 spec NASCAR package, but with the new spoiler height and rear tail extension, the car is a whole new animal in itself. It wouldn’t surprise us if there is a bigger pack this weekend and that the runs on guys in traffic are quicker and harder to block in the big pack. It may be similar to what we saw maybe 10 to 15 years ago, but ultimately in regard to handling, I think that cars are going to be stuck more into the track compared to where they’ve been in the past. The cars for this weekend are going to be quite a bit front-heavy with the big splitter so handling in traffic might be a concern compared to clean air traffic. We’re just not entirely sure what’s going to happen this weekend because handling might come into play because of the off-balance of the aero-balance. I do think though that with this package, if you get shuffled out of the pack, you might have a better chance of hooking back up to the big draft. The holes that cars are going to punch in the air this weekend are bigger than ever and the motors have more horsepower than before at Daytona and Talladega. The game plan for this weekend will be to figure out the new travel heights and the downforce making sure that no one has any issues. We’ll need to make sure that we get the balance of the car drivable both in clean air and in traffic. We’re really starting from scratch this weekend with a new tire, the new aero-balance, and the additional horsepower, the cars might drive completely different than what everyone is expecting them to.”

Stenhouse Jr. on racing at Talladega:

Stanton Barrett returns to Cup Series with Rick Ware Racing at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Officials from Rick Ware Racing (RWR) announced today that mainstay film director and stuntman Stanton Barrett will drive the team’s No. 52 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in Sunday’s GEICO 500 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
The Bishop, Calif. native is set to make his 24th career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) start but first on a superspeedway. Barrett efforts for his first Cup Series race of the season will be supported by Swedish-based Huski Chocolate.
Soon to be launched in the United States, Huski Chocolate is a premium organic cold chocolate milk beverage available with refreshing premium chocolate with a chocolate glacier taste.
Currently available in the United States, Huski Chocolate services their premium real hot chocolate syrup in the food and beverage industry including ski resorts, hotels and restaurants.
Huski Chocolate will utilize Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race to help launch the company’s “ready to drink” chocolate beverage, while also explore other business-to-business initiatives for the Huski Chocolate hot chocolate line.
“I’m glad to be back at the race track this weekend,” said Barrett who recently completed his stunt work in the upcoming expected summer blockbuster John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. “I’ve been super busy with my companies, but it’s exciting to come back to NASCAR and not only bring a new sponsor to the sport – but one that is sure to resonate with NASCAR fans.”
Over the course of his NASCAR career, Barrett has made five starts at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway between the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series. In 1999, he earned a personal track best of 15th.
While expecting a very competitive race abreast a new rules package and the introduction of tapered spacers, Barrett says a good day will be finishing the race in one-piece with a solid finish.
“There are a lot of unknowns going into this weekend’s race. I’ve ran up front many times at superspeedways and seem to get caught up in the “big one” but we hope this weekend will be different,” added Barrett. “We’re already locked into the race – so we’ll be working on finding the right balance with our No. 52 Huski Chocolate Chevrolet and make sure when we need to put ourselves in the right place we can do so.
“Bringing a good finish will give us some momentum to maybe hopefully come back in the fall.”
Rick Ware, team principal of Rick Ware Racing says the team is thrilled to welcome Barrett back to the team.
“Stanton and I have worked together for a lot of years and I’m always happy to have him behind the wheel of one of our cars,” Ware said. “I think Sunday is a race where we can go and be competitive and he (Stanton) can work with the 51 car and have the chance to bring home our best results of the season.”
Barrett’s No. 52 Chevrolet will also promote several charities this weekend. With an emphasis to bring them attentiveness, The Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation will be promoted on the television panel. E
stablished as a national identity in 2014, the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation is dedicated to changing the future of cancer by funding advanced, innovative research that treats the cancer while sparing the patient.
22 Kill, a community that raises awareness and combats suicide by empowering veterans, first responders, and their families through traditional and non-traditional therapies will adorn the side panels.
And Heroes on the Water will also see their decals on Barrett’s car Sunday. Heroes on the Water is a veteran’s charity, creates alternative therapeutic programs to serve veterans, active-duty military personnel, first responders and their families.
These experiential programs incorporate structured activities proven to improve the lives of these men and women. Each experience reduces the impact of post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury while providing much-needed camaraderie and support.
Veteran industry leader George Church will call the shots as crew chief for in the 10th Cup race of the season.
