Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS)
    Bristol Motor Speedway – April 5, 2019

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin was made available to the media in Bristol:

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Freight Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Do you have a benchmark of how you’d like to be performing in two months?

“We certainly have goals for the regular season. Personal goals that I have for the regular season that kind of can make your playoffs run much easier, much better. It’s going to take some work to get there, but ultimately we’re on track for that and I just feel like we’re definitely going to be better a few months from now than what we are now. I just feel confident in that and knowing that certainly with a little bit more execution and more learning with me and Chris (Gabehart, crew chief) we’ve continued to get better and better every race track we’ve gone to. Especially the 1.5-mile. The first one was Atlanta. We ran well, but by the end of the race we kind of let things slip away with the handling. Those are all learning things. We’re learning the package together and we’re really learning each other more and more and certainly I feel like we’re not even close to the level of relationship that like Kyle (Busch) and Adam (Stevens) are at. That’s where obviously you want to go with it. We’re miles apart from them as far as that aspect, but we’re not miles apart as far as how we’re running right now.”

What are your goals for the regular season?

“There’s a certain amount of playoff points that you’d like to have going into the playoffs. There’s a certain amount of wins you’d like to have. I don’t want to throw a bunch of numbers out, but we’re getting there.”

In first practice there were 13 guys who ran under 15-second laps. Do you think it’ll pick up for the pole award and is it about what you expected speed wise? Do you think it’ll be as demanding as everyone is predicting on Sunday?

“I hope whatever the pole is, it’s like a 14.61. It’s interesting because we have a harder left-side tire. We came here with a harder tire. I think that that’s going to offset a little bit of the extra downforce that we do have, so I’m not really sure. If it picks up, I don’t know about it picking up a couple tenths. The only way it picks up a couple tenths is if they really – I think our qualifying is so reliant on what happens this next hour in Xfinity practice. If they burn the bottom in, the pole will be won on the bottom. If they run the top, the top is going to win it. It’s tough because you have to set up your car so differently based off of those two things and we already had to get our qualifying changes in 10 minutes ago. Hopefully we guessed on which side is right when it comes. If it runs through the middle like this, I don’t think anyone will run past that 14.60.”

Do you think the cars will run lower than a 14.60?

“I didn’t think so. Chris (Gabehart, crew chief) asked me as soon as I came in the hauler, do you think they’ll run lower than a 60. I just said no. I just think – you know these cars in particular are so reliant on left-side grip for handling that it overcomes any time you harden up the tire, it just really slows us down and I think that that might be the case why you haven’t seen really fast speeds.”

What is your comfort level for your season going forward after people said you were on a hot seat this year?

“Who says I’m on a hot seat? What do they know that I don’t? That’s what I don’t understand. You all don’t know my relationship with my sponsor, the team or anything. It’s just someone looking to say something. That’s about it. I know what I’m capable of. I know that I’ve got a great relationship with the people that I’ve been partners with now for a really long time. Sometimes you just have off seasons and things just don’t happen for whatever reason. The sport’s greatest drivers have had those seasons before, but I never really let my confidence get down on the whole thing. I just have been patient and waiting on it to kind of turn. I think Chris (Gabehart, crew chief) has come in with a little bit different philosophy on how we do things. I think that that it certainly forced me to change a few things in the way that I do things and I think that some of those have been a positive thing for me. I’ve never once thought that someone could go out there and do a better job than I could in my own car. We obviously turned the corner this year. We had a good start. It is still very early. You can’t just say everything is great. Certainly last week was evidence of that. We won the race, but we had some shortfalls in the middle of that race that we’re still trying to work through. That’s why I’m confident that if we can still have those kind of results with those kind of shortfalls, that we’re a team that can battle back and once we do have clean races, we’re going to have dominant races. That’s what I really want.”

What’s your confidence level heading into Richmond?

“I love the race track. It’s just because I’ve watched so many laps around that track. It’s just a track that I know what I’m looking for when I get there. Certainly last year was a little tough in the playoff race not running well. That probably was the spiral that ended everything. It’s just a track that I go there confident in. I know exactly what I need. It doesn’t mean I always get it, but when it’s right we can really, really be on at that particular race track. It’s always rewarded my driving style no matter what. When we hit it there we can really do crazy good things. It’s literally tied with Martinsville with like my favorite race track simply because it’s a track that I believe the driver can really make a big difference.”

How surprised were you at the way you did run at Richmond last fall?

“I was really surprised and the reason that we were surprised the way we struggled there in the fall was that we went there and tested. I can tell you leaving that test, I was not confident at all in that we were going to run good. I didn’t feel it. It was just one of those tests where it just didn’t feel good leaving there. When we got there for the race, it just wasn’t good as well. It was tough to take that race because it’s one that all the pre-race hype goes to you and you know that you are most likely not going to live up to that. That part stinks. Hopefully with kind of how we’re doing this season, this rules package, wherever it might be, it seems like we’ve gone everywhere and had speed so I would suspect next week will be no different.”

What is it about your crew chief Chris Gabehart that’s going to make the difference this season and get you to the championship?

“That’s the end goal, right? Everyone can tell you a championship is there goal, but really their goal is to get in the Championship 4 and then let circumstances go from there. They’ll try to get as prepared as they can. You just can’t say you’re going to win the championship – heck and even the 20th race of the season because it all boils down to one race. We’ve seen guys that dominant that race and not even win and finish terrible in the points. You’ve got to get to Homestead and to do that you have to run good through the whole regular season or else you’re going to have to win in those last three races. I would say what Chris has brought is just a different way of doing things. I don’t know how to explain it without just telling people what he does. He’s really prepared. He gets me ready.”

Have you not seen crew chiefs prepared before?

“I’ve seen prepared crew chiefs before. All of my crew chiefs have been very, very prepared. (Mike) “Wheels” (Wheeler) did a great job of preparing, but sometimes someone who has a different way of doing things adapts better to you or your race team or maybe we just got our cars faster. I don’t know what it is exactly, but certainly when I go into a race weekend I’m confident that the plan (Chris Gabehart) puts out – I need to go out there and execute that plan and he does a good job of getting all that stuff together. I’d say that that’s been the biggest thing is that we’re more ready now for things to get thrown our way than what we’ve probably ever have been.”

How much of an influence did your dad have on your racing career?

“If you ask any of the drivers most of them will say their dad was a driving force behind them being here. It wasn’t because it was what my dad wanted to do. It was what I wanted to do. He was just there to support it. Obviously having a regular job at a trailer shop, his means could only take us so far. The thing that I’m just so in awe of is that the love for his son took him way beyond his financial means. If things wouldn’t have worked out, we would have been in major financial trouble just as a family. You can only take out so many mortgages and only default so many times before you have nothing. They took major, major risk and really they took a path to my success that I would never encourage anyone to ever, ever take because the risk is just too big. But they took it. They spent every nickel that they had in savings and said he’s not winning in the junk equipment he’s got so we’ve got to spend everything in our savings to get him a new race car, a new late model car. That just sets off the chain of the events. You start winning in your own equipment and the bigger owners see that. They’re like wow, we thought he stunk and actually maybe he’s okay and then they give me an opportunity in their car and you go out and win 25 out of 35 races in a year. It just sets off the chain of events. Then you get noticed by some Short Track Scene magazine and the next thing you know the Gibbs family kind of sees it and people within the Gibbs family that are in short track racing know about you. It gets you that opportunity at the test. It really sets off a chain of events that I think every day like if one thing wouldn’t have happened in this process, I would be working at my dad’s trailer shop right now. I was okay with that. I liked going to work there. It’s something that I really enjoyed doing because I got to do it with my dad. We showed up every day and we would raise hell at each other, but we ran a business together and that was really, really fun for me. When I got to this level, I would say it split us apart a little bit because you don’t like traveling as much and things like that. My biggest hurdle has been keeping that relationships as good as it has knowing that he risked it all for me to get here.”

  • 1980s at Talladega: Speed & Memorable Finishes by Iconic Drivers

1980s at Talladega: Speed & Memorable Finishes by Iconic Drivers

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Springtime NASCAR premier series races in the 1980s at Talladega Superspeedway, celebrating its 50thanniversary this year, were known for what it was built for – trademark finishes and “official” speed records, along with the greatest comeback in NASCAR history, the Alabama Gang’s protection of their home turf and Hall of Famers ruling the way.

The world’s largest and greatest superspeedway, which will host its tripleheader weekend featuring the GEICO 500 on April 26-28, was the creation of Big Bill France in 1969. It is the site where Benny Parsons made history in spring of 1982, becoming the first driver to break the 200-mph mark in “official” qualifying for a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at a speed of 200.176 mph. Twelve years earlier, Buddy Baker, in a winged, aerodynamic Dodge Daytona that was banned after the 1970 season, eclipsed 200 mph during a testing session on the 2.66-mile, 33-degree banked venue, but it wasn’t during qualifying for an official race.

And, just four years later in ’86, the mammoth track hosted the first “all-200 mph” qualifying field in stock car history, led by Bill Elliott at better than 212 mph. Twelve months later, Elliott, in his famous No. 9 Ford, would rewrite the history books yet again, this time turning a hot lap of 212. 809 mph, a NASCAR record that still stands today. Elliott would show his dominance of speed, capturing six straight pole positions, sweeping both Talladega races from 1985-87.

While the speeds increased during the decade, the fantastic finishes became the norm. All but one race was won by a nail-biting car length or less while Elliott’s 1.72-second triumph in 1985 will go down in history as the greatest comeback in NASCAR lore.

There were eight different winners of the 10 spring races at Talladega Superspeedway in the ‘80s and two – Bobby Allison and his son Davey Allison from the famed Alabama Gang – reeled off two each.

Below are quick recaps of each springtime race at Talladega in the ‘80s which captured memorable moments that will last forever.

    • 1980: With just a little more than 30 laps to go, Baker, who had pitted for four fresh tires, was 18 seconds behind leader Dale Earnhardt, who had taken on only two tires during his final stop. Handling better in the turns, Baker cut more than a half-second off the lead and eventually passed Earnhardt with three to go. Earnhardt made a last-ditch effort for the win coming to the checkered flag but fell three feet short.
    • 1981: Bobby holds off the trio of Baker, Darrell Waltrip and Ricky Rudd in a dazzling show that featured six lead changes over the final seven laps between Baker and Allison.
    • 1982: Waltrip betters Terry Labonte, Parsons and Kyle Petty as the quartet was only inches apart at the finish line. Waltrip would come back later in the year for a ‘Dega sweep.
    • 1983: Richard Petty claims his second and final Talladega win by holding off Parsons, Lake Speed and Harry Gant.
    • 1984: Talladega establishes itself as the most competitive track in NASCAR, setting the all-time NASCAR record for lead changes with 75 that stands until 2011 when the track breaks its own record in the spring event. Cale Yarborough makes a last-lap pass and wins over Gant by a car length, with Baker third and Allison fourth.
    • 1985: In the most dramatic comeback in history, Elliott comes from nearly two laps down (more than five miles) under green flag conditions to win. Giving up the lead on lap 37 after a lengthy pit stop to repair a loose oil line, Elliott spectacularly retakes the lead with the assistance of a caution period on lap 145. He wins at an average speed of 186.288 mph while blowing past the likes of Kyle, Yarborough and Allison.
    • 1986: In a 42-car field that saw all drivers qualify at better than 200 mph, Allison negates Earnhardt’s turn 4 effort to pass for the lead. Baker was a close third. It would be Allison’s fourth and final triumph at Talladega.
    • 1987: In what was the fastest field in NASCAR history (average speed of starters was 207.049 mph), Davey celebrates his first Cup victory in front of his hometown fans over Labonte and Kyle. Davey’s father, Bobby, was involved in a crash that later resulted (1988) in NASCAR’s implementation of restrictor plates at Talladega and Daytona.
    • 1988: Phil Parsons, younger brother of Benny, captures his first and only victory in NASCAR’s premier series by edging Bobby.
    • 1989: Davey records his second spring victory with a stellar effort over Labonte, who secured his third runner-up finish in eight spring events. Mark Martin was just a few feet behind in third.

The competitors who visited Talladega’s Gatorade Victory Lane in the spring races of the ‘80s would win a total of 23 times at the track before their retirement: Baker – 4, Bobby – 4, Waltrip – 4, Richard – 2, Yarborough – 3, Elliott – 2, Davey – 3, and Phil – 1. All but Phil are members of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, while six are in the NASCAR Hall of Fame (exception is Phil and Baker, who incidentally is a 2020 nominee).

Talladega Superspeedway’s record book will be rewritten in the track’s 100th race in the Monster Cup Series during the GEICO 500. The weekend kicks off a motorsports tripleheader with the General Tire 200 for the ARCA Menards Series (which has been a staple of Talladega Superspeedway since October of ’69) on Friday, April 26, and the MoneyLion 300 for the NASCAR Xfinity Series on Saturday, April 27. The GEICO 500 gets a 1 p.m. CDT start on Sunday, April 28. For ticket information, log onto www.talladegasuperspeedway.com or call 855-518-RACE (7223).

    About Talladega Superspeedway
Talladega Superspeedway – which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year – is the most competitive race track on the NASCAR schedule (record 88 lead changes in 188 laps), the highest-banked (33 degrees) and the longest (2.66 miles) as well as the most fun and fan-friendly. Talladega offers something for everyone, including hundreds of acres of free camping, amazing kids tickets and college student prices, along with special offers for military members, first responders, teachers and educators. The historic venue, which opened in 1969, is deemed NASCAR’s “Party Capital” thanks to the track’s infamous infield, the traditional Saturday Night Infield Concert on event weekends and renowned Talladega Blvd., home of the “Big One on the Blvd.” party. It’s the site of the most comfortable seats in motorsports, large ISM Vision HD video boards lining the frontstretch and numerous pre-race activities for fans on race day, including special Kids VIP opportunities. The track, along with its parent company, International Speedway Corporation, announced last year Transformation – The Talladega Superspeedway Infield Project presented by Graybar. The approximate $50 million redevelopment endeavor is part of ISC’s long-term capital allocation plan and reinvestment into its major motorsports complexes. The project, highlighted by a one-of-a-kind Talladega Garage Experience, will feature “up-close” access, interactive attractions and enhanced amenities for fans, sponsors, teams and stakeholders in the iconic Talladega infield. Full completion of the modernized project is scheduled for October 2019. Suárez Scores with Atlanta United; Has One “Goooooooooal” in Mind when he Returns to Compete at Talladega Superspeedway, April 28

Mexico Native Competes in Kick Challenge with a “Talladega” Spin, Along with Big Wheel Race Against Major League Soccer Championship Players

Marietta, Ga. – NASCAR driver Daniel Suárez will have one goal in mind when he makes his way to Talladega Superspeedway for the GEICO 500 on April 28. It’s simply to take his No. 41 Stewart-Haas Ford to Gatorade Victory Lane. But, on Thursday, he had another goal in view when he visited with the Atlanta United Major League Soccer (MLS) team.

Suárez, who is still looking for his first career win in NASCAR’s premier series that could perhaps come at Talladega in a couple of weeks, made a pit stop at the Atlanta United Training Ground, home of the 2018 MLS Cup Champions. While there, he got a little taste of how the champs prep for their matches, then showed them a little about turning left.

Suárez made the trek to the Atlanta area, less than two hours east of NASCAR’s biggest track. The Monterrey, Mexico native is an avid fan of soccer, and with his love of racing, he was right in his wheelhouse during his visit to the Peach State.

As part of the day, Suárez joined the squad to try and “net” a win in an accuracy competition where the objective was to shoot straight through the center of a specially branded “Talladega Superspeedway” tire. Although he didn’t hit the middle of the target in what looked like “penalty kicks,” he was impressive and hit the rubber. After all, as a youngster, he was a “pretty good” soccer player but eventually chose to go the racing route.

“Back when I was a kid in Mexico, I played a lot of soccer, it was just what we did,” said Suárez, who, in four starts at Talladega, has a best finish of 10th. “Who knows what could have happened if I had kept playing regularly back then, but it came to a point I had to choose either soccer or racing.

“Today, I was a little rusty, because I hadn’t been on a soccer field in a long time, but it was so much fun. These guys are pros and it’s been great to see how they prepare with their training – a lot like how race teams prepare and you can see similarities.”

After practicing some drills on the pitch, Suárez and some of the players hit the “track” for a different kind of racing – Adult Big Wheels style. It wasn’t child’s play in the heated two-lap dash to the finish, where Suárez’s drafting and side-by-side racing experience slingshot him to victory.

“No matter if you are in a race car or on one of those Big Wheels, I can tell you no one wants to lose,” said Suárez, who handed out special Coca-Cola “Daniel’s Amigos” T-shirts to players. “At Talladega in a few weeks we will be going wide open at 200 mph with lots of horsepower, but today we were wide open with pedal power. Again, it was fun. Made a lot of friends today with the players and some are going to come watch the race at Talladega.”

Suárez is coming off his best performance so far this season, posting a third-place finish last week and 10th the week prior. He is inching ever so close to claiming his first career victory. If he doesn’t pull off the feat before he takes to the biggest track in NASCAR, he could become the 12th driver in Talladega’s 50-year history to capture their first career triumph at the 2.66-mile facility.

As a rookie in NASCAR’s premier series at Talladega’s fall 2017 race, he looked to be in prime position for the victory as he and Chase Elliott battled for the lead in the final laps, but the two touched, igniting a multi-car pileup and resulting in a 15th-place finish.

“I am finally in a place where I am extremely confident at Talladega,” admitted Suárez, the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series champ. “I enjoy it today unlike a few years ago. I feel like I am a good racer now at a place like Talladega – maybe not the best – but good and in contention. I am more aggressive, and not letting others run over me. We ran well at Daytona in February all day, and my team has a nice history at Talladega. I can’t wait to get back.”

Last year, his No. 41 team’s Ford sat on the pole for the fall TSS event and dominated the race before running out of gas while in the lead on the final lap with Kurt Busch behind the wheel. Busch also finished second in last year’s GEICO 500. And, another positive is that Ford has been dominate at the mammoth facility recently, winning its seventh consecutive victory last fall.

The GEICO 500 will be the anchor event for tripleheader weekend (April 26-28), kicking off on Friday, April 26, with the General Tire 200 for the ARCA Menards Series and continuing on Saturday, April 27, with the MoneyLion 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series event. Sunday’s GEICO 500 gets the green flag at 1 p.m. CDT. For tickets or more information, visit www.talladegasuperspeedway.com or call 855-518-RACE (7223).

What do you think about racing at Bristol Motor Speedway?
“Man, they can’t mess Bristol Motor Speedway up, truthfully. Bristol is Bristol and it doesn’t matter what lane you are in it is good racing. I enjoy going there. Bristol is just a hardcore track where you need some drivability that you have built into the car mechanically. I look forward to Bristol each year. That time of year is always fun, I think. It is what racing is all about. The temperatures are fun, it’s not too hot, and it’s just a good time to be in Tennessee.”

    DANIEL HEMRIC QUOTES:
As a former short-track racer, how excited are you to get to Bristol Motor Speedway for the first time in a Cup Series car?
“I am pumped to get to Bristol Motor Speedway. That will be one of the longest races of my life – from what everyone tells me. With this new package in place, we’re going to be extremely fast. I feel like the lap times are going to be much faster than they were in the past. There is just a little bit of an unknown going into the weekend. I think that will make tire fall-off worse than what we’ve had there in the past, because of what we’re asking out of the tires. The racetrack could get even wider quicker. You always have the variable of how much they spray the bottom groove with the traction compound and how long that lasts. With the corner speeds being so fast, that compound may give up even quicker. There will be a lot going on, but it will be awesome to experience Bristol as a Cup Series driver with Caterpillar and Bass Pro Shops on the side of the No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.”

You have had some strong runs at Bristol Motor Speedway in the Xfinity and Truck Series. Can that relate to the Cup Series this weekend?
“I have always loved going to Bristol Motor Speedway. We had a right rear wheel issue late in the race last August in the Xfinity Series race, but someone told me we averaged a fifth-place finish up until that point. I like Bristol and feel like I have always had a pretty good idea about what I need out of the car balance-wise. When we get there this weekend, hopefully we can tune on it and keep up with it as the race goes.”

Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Bristol Motor Speedway … In 100 Series starts at the half-mile speedway, RCR has captured eight victories with drivers Kevin Harvick (2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005), Jeff Green (2002), Clint Bowyer (2008) Elliott Sadler (2012), and Austin Dillon (2016). The Welcome, North Carolina, organization has completed 26,007 laps of the 27,121 (95.9 percent) that they have competed. RCR has accumulated five pole awards, 34 top-five and 58 top-10 finishes, led 1,856 laps and averages a starting position of 9.4 and finishing position of 11.9.

Texas Review … Tyler Reddick secured his third-consecutive top-five finish when he placed second during last weekend’s Xfinity Series race at Texas Motor Speedway. Kaz Grala, in his first of select starts for RCR this year, had been running in the top 12 for the majority of the race but a late race brush with the wall relegated him to an 18th place finish.

Dash 4 Cash … The NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash is back. The top-four finishing Xfinity Series regulars from Texas Motor Speedway will compete for a $100,000 bonus at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend. Tyler Reddick qualified for this segment of Dash 4 Cash with his second-place finish at Texas.

In 2017, Parton released her first children’s album, I Believe In You, on Dolly Records through her partnership with Sony Music Nashville; the project’s proceeds benefit The Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library, a non-profit that since 1996 has provided more than 100 million books to children from birth to five years of age in the United States, Canada, Australia and the UK. In 2018, Parton received her first two Emmy Awards as the organization recognized her lifetime of giving with the Governor’s Award and the award for Best Community Service Program lauding her 2016 telethon “Smoky Mountains Rise,” which raised more than $13 million for her My People fund, which provided financial assistance to victims of massive wildfires in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Parton recently collaborated with producer Linda Perry on the soundtrack for the Golden Globe nominated film Dumplin’ starring Jennifer Aniston and Danielle MacDonald with Parton as the executive producer. In addition, Netflix will be releasing an eight-part anthology film series called Heartstrings thru her Dixie Pixie Productions, with each individual film based on one of Dolly’s masterful songs. This will be streamed in the Fall 2019.

Dash 4 Cash … Reddick qualified for this week’s Xfinity Racing Dash 4 Cash bonus after being the highest-finishing Xfinity Series regular during last week’s race at Texas Motor Speedway. He will compete against Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe, and Michael Annett for the $100,000 bonus at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Meet Reddick … Fans have multiple chances to meet the defending Xfinity Series champion at Bristol Motor Speedway. Reddick is scheduled to sign autographs on Friday, April 5, beginning at 7 p.m. local time during Food City Race Night. On Saturday, April 6, Reddick is scheduled to take part in a Q&A session at the Xfinity Zone beginning at 11:40 a.m. local time.

    TYLER REDDICK QUOTES:
You had two top-10 finishes at Bristol Motor Speedway last year. Do you enjoy racing there or do you find it mentally tough?
“I loved going to Bristol Motor Speedway growing up to watch races. I still enjoy watching races there. For me as a driver though, it’s one of my most challenging tracks. Last year, I finished well but those races are just so tough. Hopefully, this year, my crew chief Randall Burnett and the team can help me have a better balance throughout the weekend. It’s tough because if your car isn’t great at Bristol, you can struggle a lot with the constant traffic you’re in while racing around . You really have no time to recover if you make a mistake, especially since you spend more time in the corners of the track rather than the straightaways. If things don’t go right, it can make for a long day, but with how we’ve been running lately I have faith our No. 2 Dolly Parton Chevrolet Camaro will be fast right off the hauler.”

How unique is it for you to have Dolly Parton on your Chevrolet Camaro this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway?
“It’s very cool to have Dolly Parton on our No. 2 Camaro at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend. Tennessee is her home state, so it’s a special place to represent her and her many businesses. Dolly is an icon and has had a lot of success in her career, which is something I admire while trying to build my own success in NASCAR. Hopefully, we can have a great run for her in the No. 2 Dolly Parton Chevrolet Camaro while racing at Thunder Valley.”

    QUOTABLE QUOTES:

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1 – 9th in Standings
WHAT IS THE KEY TO GETTING SUCCESSFUL AT BRISTOL AND DO YOU ENJOY RACING THERE?
“Yeah, I really enjoy racing at Bristol. I think it’s one of the coolest places we go to just environment wise and then race track wise. Just a lot of fun. Short track racing in general is fun. I’ve enjoyed it. We’ve had some okay runs there. Feel like we had a really good car there last fall and had a realistic shot that I didn’t do a very good job of. I think it’s been kind of hit or miss, it’s hard to get right. You can just be off a little bit one way or the other and it make a big difference there.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 CREDIT ONE BANK CAMARO ZL1– 12th in Standings
YOU’VE BEEN SO CLOSE, WHAT WOULD IT MEAN TO WIN AT BRISTOL?
“Bristol is my favorite track. So, obviously you always want to win at your favorite track and thankfully I was able to win at an Xfinity race there last year. After being close there in Xfinity, every time I’ve ran, I finished second in my first ever Xfinity race there. So, I’ve got a ton of seconds and laps led and everything there. So, not being able to get it done makes you want to win that much more and it will make that moment, when you do win, extra special. Hopefully this is the year where it will all come together and we can finally be standing in Victory Lane there in a Cup car.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1 – 15th in Standings
“I’m really so proud of our organization as a whole for the performance last week in Texas – running well in practice, the first pole for Ally, leading a bunch of laps, and finishing with a solid top-5. We have some momentum heading into Bristol, which as of late has been one of my better tracks. It’s one of the most physical tracks we run and you have to stay on top of things while there is just chaos everywhere.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 SYMBICORT CAMARO ZL1 – 17th in Standings
WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 AXALTA CAMARO ZL1 – 18th in Standings
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT RACING AT BRISTOL?
“The atmosphere is great at Bristol. The cars are fast and it feels really fast inside the car. I would say all of that stuff just contributes to the overall atmosphere there. It’s just a really fun track to go to as a driver. It’s challenging but also very rewarding to be able to get around there fast.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 88 NATIONWIDE CAMARO ZL1 – 19th in Standings
“I can absolutely carry over what we learned at Bristol last year and put that to use this weekend. It is a strong race track for us. Last fall we went down a lap due to an issue and was still able to bounce back and get a top-10 finish. I think Bristol can be a great place for us and I am really looking forward to getting back there this weekend.”

    CHRIS BUESCHER, NO. 37 BUSH’S BEANS CAMARO ZL1 – 22nd in Standings
“Bristol Motor Speedway is my favorite track, and definitely one that I am excited to head to for their race weekend. Not only is it my favorite track, it’s the home of BUSH’s Beans, whose copper Camaro ZL1 also returns to the track this weekend. I love the high-banks and short-track intensity that Bristol brings. We’ve had really good runs there in the past, just haven’t been able to get the finishes reflecting those runs. We were easily a top-five car all night in the night race last fall, but got caught in some drama at the end that put us a few spots back. I don’t think the rules package is going to change Bristol much, so I’m really excited for an intense short track race in Thunder Valley on Sunday.”

TY DILLON, NO. 13 GEICO CAMARO ZL1– 23rd in Standings
“Bristol Motor Speedway is my favorite racetrack that we go to. I’ve been successful running against the wall and making my way to the front, and I’ve been pretty good running the bottom as well. Races at Bristol are always great. Throwing extra downforce at us with all the horsepower that we’ll have is going to make it a wild race. We already go around Bristol at such high speeds that this package is going to make it extremely fast. Being sharp mentally and physically is going to pay huge dividends. I always look forward to heading to Bristol with this Germain Racing team and our GEICO Camaro ZL1 because I feel like there is an opportunity to run well.”

RYAN PREECE, NO. 47 KROGER CAMARO ZL1 – 25th in Standings
“Bristol Motor Speedway is a track that I always have circled on my list. I have a lot of good memories there from the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and I’m looking forward to making more this weekend in the Kroger Camaro ZL1. JTG Daugherty Racing has always had a strong short-track program, and I think Chris and I are working really well together and taking good notes from each other to improve our performances every week. We’re still a new team and we’re continuing to make progress every week, and I really think heading to Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend we’ll be able to showcase that and really put on a good performance.”

    BUBBA WALLACE, NO. 43 BLUE-EMU CAMARO ZL1 – 28th in Standings
WHAT IS IT ABOUT BRISTOL THAT MAKES IT AN EVENT EVERYONE WANTS TO GO TO?
“I think you just get that coliseum feel at the Bristol Motor Speedway. It’s called The Last Great Coliseum, and when you walk in you are surrounded by stands and fans. The noise is loud, and you are just in a soup bowl running around there – you get kind of dizzy.
“The biggest thing is: my spotter always tells me “alright, don’t forget we are pitting on the front stretch – it’s the side that has the start/finish line, remember that the backstretch doesn’t.” I’m like, ‘duh,’ I know what side of the track we are on but there are times that drivers pit on the wrong side. They look the same, everything about it is the same. You get going around there and you get into this rhythm and you just kind of get lost.”

DANIEL HEMRIC, NO. 8 CATERPILLAR/BASS PRO SHOPS CAMARO ZL1 – 29th in Standings
AS A FORMER SHORT-TRACK RACER, HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO GET TO BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A CUP SERIES CAR?
“I am pumped to get to Bristol.

YOU HAVE HAD SOME STRONG RUNS AT BRISTOL IN THE XFINITY AND TRUCK SERIES, CAN THAT RELATE TO THE CUP SERIES THIS WEEKEND?
“I have always loved going to Bristol.

Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Sylvania team hope to build on their speed from 2018 at Bristol Motor Speedway as they prepare for this weekend’s Food City 500 at the high-banked Tennessee track.

Crew chief Greg Erwin said he plans to begin Friday’s practice with a set-up on the No. 21 Mustang similar to the one the team employed last year when Menard qualified seventh for the spring race and fourth for the summer event. Menard was running third last spring when the race was halted due to weather and resumed the next day under different weather conditions that adversely affected the handling of the No. 21.

Last fall, Menard was again running competitively and had a mechanical issue that dropped him out of contention for a great finish.

“We’re going to put what we had last year under the car and see how it drives,” Erwin said, adding that there will be new challenges this year including dealing with a new aero package, a new tire compound from Goodyear and the variables that come with applying the PJ1 traction compound to the track and how the weather affects the treated area. “There are a lot of things to deal with.”

Erwin said the traction compound will be the hardest to predict, especially when the weather is factored in.

“You have to deal with what level of PJ1 is applied, where it’s applied and whether the weather will allow the PJ1 to come in,” he said, adding that the traction compound isn’t very effective if conditions are cold.

Erwin said his race strategy at Bristol will be typical of races there in that if he’s running in the lead group, he’ll do what the leaders do, and if he gets off sequence, he’ll utilize a different strategy to catch back up.

“How you call the race changes depending on where you’re running,” he said.

Erwin also has to figure into his set-up and his race strategy the likelihood that at some point in the race, drivers will find themselves running against the outside wall, in a groove most aren’t likely to practice in beforehand.

“That’ll be another unknown,” he said.

Qualifying for the Food City 500 is set for 6:10 p.m. on Friday, and the race is scheduled to start just after 2 p.m. on Sunday with TV coverage on Fox Sports 1.

SHORT-TRACK PROWESS: In Chase Elliott’s last five short-track finishes, he collected top-10 finishes at all five events, four of which were top-five finishes including two runner-up results. In those last five races, Elliott holds the best average finish of all active drivers (3.6). His current streak of five top-10 finishes on a short track is currently the second longest active streak. Elliott led a total of 195 laps at the last five races at tracks less than one mile in length (Martinsville, Richmond, Bristol). He will make his 22nd NASCAR Cup Series short-track start this weekend. In the 21 previous starts, he has led 354 laps and garnered nine top-10 finishes.

2019, SO FAR: Seven races into the 2019 season, Elliott has collected one top-five finish, two top-10s and a total of 84 laps led. He averages a starting position of 10.3 and finishing position of 12.1. In the first seven races of the season, the driver of the No. 9 Chevy has spent more than 500 laps inside the top five. Elliott’s runner-up result at Martinsville is currently the highest finish of the season for any Chevrolet driver.

GREAT PERFORMANCE: Throughout last season and so far in 2019, Elliott has had strong performances on non-aero tracks (ISM, Martinsville, Bristol, Richmond, Sonoma, New Hampshire, Watkins Glen). The 23-year-old driver has finished inside the top five in eight of the last 13 non-aero track races – five were top-three finishes.

ELLIOTT AT BRISTOL: Elliott is set to make his seventh career NASCAR Cup Series start at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend. In his previous six starts at the track, he has led 128 laps and collected two top-five finishes and three top-10s. He averages a starting position of 8.2 and finishing position of 12.7. In Elliott’s five NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the track, he earned one top-five finish and finished in the top 10 in all five events.

LAST TIME AT BRISTOL: The driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 led a season-high 112 laps en route to a third-place finish in the 500-lap Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 2018. The result gave Elliott his fifth top-three finish of the season.

TAMED TEXAS: Having one of his best career NASCAR Cup Series weekends, William Byron qualified a track-best second on Friday at Texas Motor Speedway. Running near the front almost all race, including leading 15 laps, Byron brought home a career track-best sixth-place finish in Sunday’s race – tying his previous career-best Cup finish from last season at Pocono Raceway – coming up a position short of capturing his first Cup Series top-five to his teammate Jimmie Johnson.

BATTLE AT BRISTOL: Heading to the “Last Great Colosseum” this weekend, Byron is set to make his sixth national series start at Bristol Motor Speedway. With two NASCAR Cup Series starts last season, two NASCAR Xfinity Series starts and one NASCAR Gander Outdoor Truck Series start at the 0.533-mile concrete oval, Byron also has one regional touring series start in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. Byron was strong in qualifying for both Cup Series races, qualifying 11th in the spring and fifth in the fall – his best qualifying effort of 2018. Fighting handling issues in both races, he posted a best finish of 18th. In the Xfinity Series, his best finish was a 12th-place effort in the spring, while he collected a fourth-place finish in his lone Truck Series start, leading one lap in the process. In his K&N start, Byron led 44 laps before coming up just shy of the win with a runner-up result. If Byron were able to win this weekend, he would become the sixth driver to earn their first career Cup win at Bristol, as well as become the youngest Bristol winner of all time, which is currently held by Kyle Busch when he drove for Hendrick Motorsports in 2007.

AT IT AGAIN WITH AXALTA: For the sixth time in 2019, Byron will carry the iconic Axalta flames on his No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. This weekend will complete a stretch of five races in a row for Axalta on board the No. 24 car before returning to Byron’s machine for the spring race at Dover International Speedway in May.

KNAUS’ KNOWLEDGE: Set to call the shots for his eighth race with Byron this weekend, Knaus will be making his 35th start at Bristol as a Cup Series crew chief. With two pole awards and two wins in his career at the 0.533-mile concrete track, Knaus’ most recent win came in the spring race in 2017. At the notoriously tough track, Knaus also has 12 top-five finishes and 20 top-10s to his credit.

Q&A WITH BYRON: Byron will take part in a question-and-answer session with fans at the Trackside Live stage in the Bristol Motor Speedway Fan Zone on Sunday, April 7, at 11 a.m. local time.

POLE AT TEXAS: Last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, Jimmie Johnson scored his 36th career pole position by sweeping all three rounds of qualifying. It was Johnson’s second pole at Texas and his first pole since July 2016.

FIRST TOP-FIVE: Johnson scored his first top-five finish of the season Sunday at Texas. He led the first 58 laps of the race, finished second in Stage 1, 10th in Stage 2 and rounded out the day in fifth place.

LAST SEASON AT BRISTOL: Johnson turned in two top-10 performances last season at Bristol Motor Speedway. He had his best finish of 2018 at Bristol in April with a third-place result. Johnson turned in a ninth-place finish at the 0.533-mile track in August 2018.

STAGE SOLID: Since the implementation of stage racing in 2017, Johnson is one of only two drivers to finish in the top-10 in both Stage 1 and Stage 2 in all four races at Bristol.

BEST AVERAGE FINISH: Out of all current drivers who have competed in the last 10 races at Bristol Motor Speedway, Johnson boasts the best average finish with a mark of 8.3.

LAST WIN AT BRISTOL: Johnson scored his 82nd career win at Bristol Motor Speedway on April 24, 2017. Johnson started 11th, finished fifth in Stage 1, third in Stage 2 and led 81 laps en route to victory. It was Johnson’s second win at Bristol, with the first coming on March 21, 2010.

MEN’S JOURNAL FEATURE: Men’s Journal, a lifestyle publication, followed Johnson during the season-opening weekend at Daytona International Speedway. The article, which discusses Johnson’s Boston Marathon training is on newsstands now.

ALLY SWAG(GEAR): Ally will help longtime No. 48 fans get their “Ally Swag(gear)” on this weekend. Ally brand ambassadors will roam the Earhart Campground (adjacent to Bristol Motor Speedway) on Saturday (9 a.m. – 1 p.m.) and Sunday (9 a.m. – 2 p.m.) handing out new Jimmie Johnson No. 48 Ally swag.

Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 88 Nationwide Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, will be available to members of the media on Friday, April 5, at 4:25 p.m. local time in the media center at Bristol Motor Speedway.

NATIONWIDE ON BOARD: The primary blue-and-white colors of Nationwide will be featured on the No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in 20 NASCAR Cup Series events in 2019. Nationwide will adorn the hood of Alex Bowman’s Chevrolet for this weekend’s event at Bristol Motor Speedway, next weekend at Richmond Raceway and at Talladega Superspeedway later this month. Last August, Hendrick Motorsports and Nationwide extended their primary partnership with Bowman and the No. 88 team for an additional two years beginning in 2019.

BOWMAN AT BRISTOL: Bowman will make his seventh start in the NASCAR Cup Series at Bristol Motor Speedway this Sunday. His best finish of fifth came in the spring race in 2018 in the No. 88 Nationwide machine after qualifying eighth. The finish was Bowman’s first top-five finish in his Cup Series career. In his previous six starts at the track, the Arizona native has two top-10 finishes. Last fall, the No. 88 team finished eighth after starting the event in the 22nd position.

IVES IN TENNESSEE: Crew chief Greg Ives will call the shots for the ninth time for the No. 88 team in Bristol this weekend. The Michigan native has two top-five finishes and four top-10s at the track, with a best finish of second coming in 2016 with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Ives’ drivers have an average finish of 14.0 at the Tennessee-based track. Ives joined Hendrick Motorsports as a mechanic in 2004. He won five championships with the No. 48 team in 2006-2010 as the lead mechanic. During that time, he was a part of one win, two pole awards and eight top-10 finishes at Bristol.

TEXAS REWIND: Last weekend, Bowman and the No. 88 team battled a tough weekend in Texas. During qualifying on Friday, the 25-year-old driver was involved in an incident in Turn 2 and the team was forced to pull out the backup Chevy Camaro ZL1. The team had one practice to dial in the new car and by Sunday, it had made massive improvements. Bowman had to start from the rear of the field and was able to bring home an 18th-place finish after battling handling conditions throughout the 501-mile event.

    Hendrick Motorsports

HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS AT BRISTOL: At Bristol Motor Speedway, Hendrick Motorsports has 11 wins, 11 pole positions, 58 top-five finishes and 104 top-10s. Jimmie Johnson most recently won there for the organization in April 2017. Last time at Bristol, Hendrick Motorsports had three drivers finish in the top 10. Eight of the organization’s 11 wins at Bristol have come in the spring race.

SIX OR MORE: Bristol Motor Speedway is one of nine tracks on the schedule where Hendrick Motorsports has won with at least six different drivers. It is joined by Talladega Superspeedway, ISM Raceway, Dover International Speedway, Daytona International Speedway, Darlington Raceway, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Pocono Raceway and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

OVER 100 TOP-10s: With 104 top-10 finishes at Bristol Motor Speedway on the organization’s résumé, the Tennessee track ranks fifth among the six venues where Hendrick Motorsports has earned 100 or more top-10s. The organization has also achieved the feat at Martinsville (126), Pocono (123), Richmond (105), Dover (105) and Charlotte (100).

SHORT-TRACK PROWESS: Hendrick Motorsports has accumulated 50 wins on short tracks, the most among all active teams, 15 wins ahead of Joe Gibbs Racing’s 35. Ten different Hendrick Motorsports drivers have contributed to those wins. Junior Johnson and Associates holds the record for most different drivers to win on a short track for one team with 11. Hendrick Motorsports also leads all active teams on short tracks with 50 poles, 221 top-five finishes, 376 top-10s and 20,813 laps led.

WINNING WAYS: Hendrick Motorsports has won at least one short-track race in 27 different seasons. The organization’s most short-track wins in a season was five, accomplished in both 1996 and 2007. Hendrick Motorsports has won at least one short-track race in 15 of the previous 17 seasons.

HOME SWEET HOME: Chris Burkey, the pit crew coach for the Nos. 9 and 24 teams, hails from Greeneville, Tennessee, only 47 miles southwest of Bristol Motor Speedway. Burkey played football for Wingate University, where he eventually started his coaching career. From 1992 to 2005, he coached for Wingate, East Tennessee and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2005, he became a scout for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. Burkey made the transition from football to NASCAR when he was hired as Hendrick Motorsports’ developmental pit crew coach in 2009. He moved up to the head coach position for the former Nos. 5 and 24 teams in 2014.

FIRST-TIME WINNERS: Hendrick Motorsports holds the record for the most first-time Cup Series winners with nine. If William Byron or Alex Bowman win at Bristol, it will extend the record to the 10th time a driver has recorded their first career Cup Series win while driving for Hendrick Motorsports.

ORGANIZATION STATS: To date, Hendrick Motorsports has totals of 12 championships, 252 race victories, 217 pole positions, 1,047 top-five finishes and 1,793 top-10 finishes in points-paying NASCAR Cup Series competition. Its teams have led almost 68,000 laps since 1984.

    QUOTABLE /
Chase Elliott on racing at Bristol:
“I really enjoy racing at Bristol. I think it’s one of the coolest places we go to just environment-wise and then racetrack-wise. Just a lot of fun. Short-track racing in general is fun. I’ve enjoyed it. We’ve had some OK runs there. Feel like we had a really good car there last fall and had a realistic shot that I didn’t do a very good job of capitalizing on. I think it’s been kind of hit-or-miss. I remember the spring race of, I think, ’16 being really good and then this past fall race being pretty fast and kind of in-between I feel like has just been mediocre. So, it’s hard to get right. You can just be off a little bit one way or the other and it makes a big difference there.”

    Elliott on speed at Bristol:
“It was already really fast before. I don’t know. I’m excited. Bristol is a fun place. I am not sure what they are going to do with the grip stuff on the bottom. That has been a big deal in the past as to how the racetrack evolves and how the day can change and how the racetrack groove can change. I think it has been a fun dynamic. I think they are down the right path there, so hopefully they keep going that direction and they can just make that a little better. I feel like that has been a nice mix of bottom to top there the last couple of races.”

    William Byron on Bristol:
“The atmosphere is great at Bristol. The cars are fast and it feels really fast inside the car. I would say all of that stuff just contributes to the overall atmosphere there. It’s just a really fun track to go to as a driver. It’s challenging but also very rewarding to be able to get around there fast.”

Jimmie Johnson on going from Texas to Bristol:
“I’m really so proud of our organization as a whole for the performance last week in Texas – running well in practice, the first pole for Ally, leading a bunch of laps and finishing with a solid top-five. We have some momentum heading into Bristol, which as of late has been one of my better tracks. It’s one of the most physical tracks we run and you have to stay on top of things while there is just chaos everywhere.”

No. 48 team crew chief Kevin Meendering on Bristol:
“We’ve had a lot of different packages over the years at Bristol and so this weekend the biggest unknown is probably the tires. We will look at a lot of past history and back to the 2015 notes. The short tracks don’t seem to change and are less aero sensitive. Jimmie’s had some strong runs at Bristol the last few times there, so we have a lot of good notes to look back on.”

    Alex Bowman on Bristol:
“I can absolutely carry over what we learned at Bristol last year and put that to use this weekend. It is a strong racetrack for us. Last fall we went down a lap due to an issue and were still able to bounce back and get a top-10 finish. I think Bristol can be a great place for us and I am really looking forward to getting back there this weekend.”

Bowman on April Fools’ Day prank:
“The Hendrick Motorsports video group got me good. As a driver, you do anything for your partners. I went with it, but I am glad I wasn’t the only one that got fooled. Kevin (Meendering) and William (Byron) were hilarious, but again, you do anything for a partner and we proved that! That video was great.”
