    EXPRESS NOTES:

Bristol Recap: Denny Hamlin and the FedEx Racing team endured a long day Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway, as early contact disrupted the rear alignment of the #11 FedEx Toyota and resulted in a 33rd place finish. A group of cars just in front of Hamlin made contact on Lap 29, and Hamlin spun trying to avoid the wreck, but was hit from behind in the left-rear. What looked like cosmetic damage turned out to be much more severe, as it made the car a handful to drive for the remainder of the 500-lap event. With the finish, Hamlin dropped nine spots to 17th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings, 44 points behind leader Kurt Busch after four of 36 events.

Going Back to Cali: Hamlin is making his 11th career Cup Series start at Auto Club Speedway (ACS) on Sunday in the #11 FedEx Office Toyota Camry. In 10 previous trips to the two-mile speedway in Fontana, Calif., the 30-year-old driver has one top-five and four top-10 results, including a third-place finish in the fall 2008 event. This year marks the first since 2003 that the track is only hosting one Cup Series race. Hamlin finished 29th and eighth in the two events at ACS in 2010. Fuel strategy worked to near-perfection in the spring race last year, but two cut tires in the race’s final 30 laps resulted in the #11 Toyota finishing two laps down to the leaders. Hamlin rebounded in the fall trip to the track, as Hamlin charged from a 34th-place starting position to finish eighth and stay in the Chase hunt. Hamlin started on the pole in the fall 2009 race at Auto Club and was leading the field to the green flag on a lap 190 restart when contact with Juan Pablo Montoya sent Hamlin spinning through the infield grass to make contact with the pit wall. Hamlin has a pair of sixth-place runs at the track — in the fall of 2006 and spring of 2009. In total, Hamlin has led 56 laps with an average finish of 17.2 at Auto Club Speedway.

North Chicago and Wisconsin Sales Team Along for the Ride in Bristol: The North Chicago and Wisconsin FedEx sales team with be recognized for their performance with the team’s center numbers “7376” on the B-post of the #11 FedEx Office Toyota this weekend at Auto Club Speedway. The group is currently rated as the top sales team in FedEx’s annual President’s Club program.

HAMLIN CONVERSATION – AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY:

Does the new points system magnify a bad day?

“I think in the long run, consistency is what’s going to pay more than ever for this points system. If you finish (two races) in the high-teens, that’s as good as a win and a 40th-place finish. It’s a little different, for sure. It pays to be consistent, which we feel like we’re a pretty consistent race team throughout the year. Then, at the end of the season when we feel like we need to turn it up, then we feel like we can. It does make you a little scared of those bottom finishes because it’s tough to look at your points day and say you go into a weekend with 400 points and you’ve just spent three days at a race track and you come out three points better than what you started. You might as well have just stayed home. It’s a hard hit when you only get a few points, especially single digits.”

Do you enjoy racing at Auto Club Speedway?

“We haven’t had a ton of success at California, but I like racing there. We have had some bad luck with tires or getting caught in wrecks, and I’m still looking for that first win. It’s big and wide and fast, and a lot of fun for the drivers. It’s a place where you can move around and change your line to try to get your car working the best. You need a lot of horsepower because the straightaways are long, and that place is tough on motors. It’s a little easier now that this race is 400 miles. I’m happy that they shortened it. Hopefully we’ll have a good car for practice and just fine-tune on it for the race.”

  • RCR Drivers Agree On One Thing: Martinsville Speedway Is One Difficult Track

RCR Drivers Agree On One Thing: Martinsville Speedway Is One Difficult Track

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (March 21, 2011) – For about two hours Tuesday, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton and Paul Menard talked about every racing topic under the sun as the trio of NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers were interviewed by about 30 media members.

While the three Richard Childress Racing drivers covered many different subjects, they agreed on one thing headed into the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 on April 3: racing at Martinsville Speedway is as tough as it comes. The fourth RCR driver, Kevin Harvick, had an excused absence for the day. He entertained the media last week in go-kart races.

Menard, the newest member of the RCR operation, is also the hottest these days. He’s fifth in the Sprint Cup points and has been in contention most every week this season. He only has one career top-15 finish at Martinsville, though.

“Martinsville is way more mental than physical. It definitely wears on you,” said Menard. “You have to put a lot into the cars. It’s very mental figuring out where you have to be. You have to position yourself to get to the bottom of the track, because if you don’t you’ll get freight-trained.”

Bowyer, who has one top five and five top-10 finishes in 10 starts at Martinsville, agrees with Menard.

“I’m telling you, you have to discipline yourself big time at Martinsville,” said Bowyer. “You have to slow everything down. You have to back up on the corner and let the car roll through the corner and have the car capable of doing that. If you have a car that you have to fight, it’s going to be a long weekend at Martinsville.”

Martinsville is Burton’s home track. He loves to race on the historic half-mile, and traditionally has done well. He has a one win in 33 starts at Martinsville, 10 top-five finishes and 15 top-10 finishes. He was in position to win last fall, but had a flat tire late in the race, one of several recent Martinsville mishaps for him.

“One thing about Martinsville is that it is a very difficult race track,” said Burton, who grew up about an hour east of the track in South Boston. “There are a lot of drivers that go to Martinsville that don’t have a chance to win because it is so unique. It is so different that it puts some people in a position where their skill set just doesn’t work at that track. It doesn’t mean they are a worse driver, it just means their skill set doesn’t work for Martinsville.”

Tickets for the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 weekend are on sale and may be purchased by calling 877.RACE.TIX or by visiting www.martinsvillespeedway.com.

Ticket prices for the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 range from $35 to $77.

Carl Edwards – NSCS CALIFORNIA ADVANCE

Team: No. 99 Aflac Ford Fusion

    Crew Chief: Bob Osborne

    Chassis: RK-739 New chassis

    QUOTES

Carl Edwards on racing at Auto Club Speedway:

“We’re going to California to win the race this weekend. We’ve got fast race cars and this is a great race track for us. Our whole Roush Fenway team has just been performing really well this season. I think any one of our teams could be considered a favorite to win at California.”

Crew chief Bob Osborne on racing at Auto Club Speedway:

“Historically California has been a really good track for Carl. He has finished in the top 10 in all but three of his Cup races there. We are taking a brand new car so we feel it will be very competitive at California. We had another solid run last weekend at Bristol which moved us to within one point of the lead. It’s still early in the season, but we are right where we need to be right now.”

    FAST FACTS

    * Carl Edwards enters California second in the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings, only one point behind leader Kurt Busch. He has earned one win, three top-five, three top-10 finishes and two poles in only four starts this season. * FOR THE RECORD… In 13 starts at the two-mile California track, Edwards has one win, one pole, six top-five and 10 top-10 finishes. His average start is 19.0, and his average finish is 9.2 which is third best. Edwards has completed 3189 of 3205 (99.5%) of laps attempted at Auto Club Speedway. * IN THE LOOP… According to NASCAR’s Loop Statistics compiled over the last 13 races at Fontana, Edwards has turned 151 of the track’s fastest laps (fourth best), spent 2163 laps in the top 15 and led a total of 121 laps. Edwards’ driver rating is sixth best among active drivers. * ON THE TRACK…The No. 99 Aflac crew will unload RK-739 for the weekend. This is a new car for Edwards and the team. * REWIND, CALIFORNIA, February 2010… After struggling a bit in qualifying to start 31st, Edwards moved up as high as sixth with 52 laps to go. After some contact late in the race he fell back to 22nd but after quick work in the pits on the final stop he rebounded to finish the race in 13th place.

Greg Biffle California Notes and Quotes

Biffle on California:“I really can’t wait to get to California.  I love that track partly because we’ve had success there but also because it’s a lot of fun and it is fast and challenging.  A lot of strategy comes into play at California and that usually makes it interesting too.  I also really like going out west because I get to see my family.

My mom usually comes to most of the west coast races and it’s always good to get to spend time with her.  We had a solid run last weekend in Bristol that we feel like got us going back in the right direction.

We just need to continue that momentum with a good finish this weekend and that’s all I can ask for.”

Erwin on California: “California is another big, fast racetrack where we seem to run well.  Qualifying well will be important because the field gets strung out pretty quickly and if you start near the back, it can be hard to make up positions.

We’ve also seen fuel mileage come into play at California several times so pit strategy will be a factor. We just need to try to have a mistake-free race and take what it gives us.”

Joey Logano and No. 20 Home Depot Team – Auto Club Speedway Advance

The Home Depot Team Notes of Interest

    ·         Joey Logano is searching for that illusive first top-10 finish of the 2011 season and hopes to find it at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. this weekend.  Auto Club Speedway has been one of Logano’s most consistent tracks on the circuit.  He has four starts at the two-mile track and has completed all but one lap of competition.  He has one top-five and two top-10 finishes and an average finishing position of 14th.

     ·         About the last race: Logano and The Home Depot Team had another frustrating finish at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday.  Logano consistently improved throughout the 500-lap race, but a right-front tire issue with less than 30 laps to go forced him down pit road under green-flag conditions.  The blown tire dropped him from the top 10 to the 23rd position.

    ·         The Home Depot Team is currently tied for 29th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings following the race at Bristol.  The team has accumulated 74 points so far this season and sits 49 points out of the series top 10.

    ·         Welcome aboard The Home Depot associates from store #405 from Glendale, Ariz.  The store number will ride along with Logano this weekend for the 200-lap race.

    ·         Logano will be competing in the Cup Series and Nationwide Series races this weekend.  Before climbing behind the wheel of the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota on Sunday, Logano will once again race the No. 20 Toyota in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event on Saturday.  Logano has one win, four top-five and five top-10 finishes in just five starts in the Nationwide Series at the Fontana, Calif.-based track.

    ·         The No. 20 Home Depot Team is taking chassis #287 for Logano this weekend for the Auto Club 400.  The team raced this chassis to a seventh-place finish at Charlotte Motor Speedway in October and to a fourth-place finish at Texas in November. The back-up chassis is chassis #284 which Logano drove last year at Auto Club Speedway to an 11th-place finish and at Phoenix International Raceway in November to third.

Logano Quotes on Auto Club Speedway: “There is a ton to think about during a race at Auto Club.  It’s a pretty cool race track.  There is so much room out there to race and you can draft down the straight-aways.  It’s starting to wear out so it’s pretty bumpy. But the craziest thing about it by far is the restarts, a good restart is huge.  When the flag goes in the air, people are four and five-wide.  You can gain and lose five spots before you get through the first turn, not the first lap, but the first turn.”   Logano Quotes on the Season: “It’s been tough this season.  I know the results don’t show it, but I really believe we are running better now than we were last year.  Every time I think the bad luck is out of the way, something happens.  Last weekend we were down 150 horsepower then the wheel broke.  But the good thing is the performance is there and we know what we are capable of doing.  We are now to the point where we can’t afford to have another bad race or we will never get the points back.  I think with how fast the cars have been we can still make it into the top 10 before Richmond.”

  • Newman Off to Best Start as Stewart-Haas Driver

Newman Off to Best Start as Stewart-Haas Driver

FONTANA, Calif. (March 22, 2011) — Ryan Newman is enjoying his best start to a season since joining the Stewart-Haas Racing team in 2009.

After four NASCAR Sprint Cup races, the driver of the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet has three top 10s and a average finish of 10.5. Had it not been for a late-race wreck in the Daytona 500, Newman’s average finish would easily be in the single digits.

The average finish of 10.5 is miles ahead of where he was at the same time during the past two seasons. When he made the Chase in 2009, Newman’s average finish after four races was 27.75. Last year when he came up short of making the Chase, his average finish was 26.25 after four events.

Newman has also led 70 laps in the first four races, that is seven more then he led the entire 2010 campaign.

“We ended the season strong in 2010 and have done a good job in carrying the momentum into the new year,” said Newman, who is currently tied for third in the driver point standings with teammate Tony Stewart. “It’s a tribute to everyone at Stewart-Haas Racing for staying focused and being committed to the big picture. It’s always nice to jump out to a good start so you’re not playing catch up. We are capable of winning races and making our Army Strong Soldiers proud of their team.”

There hasn’t been a race this season when Newman hasn’t been strong. He was leading the Daytona 500 before being collected in an accident with a few laps remaining. He followed a 22nd-place result at Daytona with fifth-place finishes in Phoenix and Las Vegas and 10th in Bristol.

“I wish we could have started off Daytona better than we did, but it was still twice as good as the last couple of years,” noted Newman, a 14-time tour winner. “The way we ran in Las Vegas was encouraging to say the least. The mile-and-a-half and 2-mile tracks were our Achilles heel in the past. We need to continue to do well on these types of tracks, including at Fontana this weekend.”

Sunday’s Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway in Southern California will be another test for Newman and the No. 39 Army team. At his last race in Fontana (October), Newman finished fifth, which was part of his late-season surge.

“I am confident about this weekend, but we have to continue to attack and race smart,” explained Newman, who captured the pole in his first Cup start at Fontana in 2002. “It’s now a shorter race (400 miles) and we’ll have to adjust. I feel that we are a team capable of consistently running in the top five.”

A Tribute to PaYS Newman’s No. 39 Chevrolet will pay tribute at the Auto Club 400 to the Army’s Partners for Youth Success (PaYS) program, which gives Soldiers from the Army and Army Reserve a leg up on civilian employment.   Under the PaYS program, when a Soldier leaves active-duty or Initial Entry Training (IET) for the Army Reserve, they will receive a guaranteed job interview with the civilian employer they chose as part of their enrollment in the program. Currently, there are approximately 400 companies participating in PaYS, more than 50 of which are Fortune 500 companies.   The logos for PaYS and Haas Automation, a new partner to the PaYS program, will be featured on the hood of Newman’s Chevrolet. • GORDON TO IMPROVE AVERAGE IN CALIFORNIA?

GORDON TO IMPROVE AVERAGE IN CALIFORNIA?

FONTANA, Calif. (March 22, 2011) – If the Drive to End Hunger team hits the correct setup combination underneath the No. 24 Chevrolet in Sunday’s Auto Club 400, it could mean another home run for Jeff Gordon at Auto Club Speedway.

In baseball terms, Gordon is batting .333 when it comes to top-two finishes at the two-mile track. In 21 starts, the four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion has three wins (1997, 1999 and 2004) and four second-place finishes (7 of 21 or 0.333 percent). Overall, Gordon has posted 10 top-five’s and 11 top-10’s while also collecting two poles (1998 and 2007) at the track.

“Fontana is certainly a track I love and one that I look forward going to,” said Gordon, driver of the No. 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet. “It’s also one that I’ve experienced success at over the years.

“This is a big and fast race track, and you’ve got to have good power down the straightaways.  But you also need good ‘grip’ in the corners.”

Earlier this year at Phoenix, Gordon collected his 83rd career win – his first victory with new crew chief Alan Gustafson and a new supporting cast. In his 19th season, Gordon feels like it is a new beginning.

“To me, I look forward to going to every race track every weekend because it’s kind of like starting over,” said Gordon, who is 19th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings. “When I think of Alan, his group and their history here, they’ve run well here so I’m excited to get to the race track to see what we have for the weekend.

“I feel like we’re working well together and we’ve got fast race cars.”

The first four races of 2011 have been on four very different tracks. The year started on the high-banked Daytona International Speedway with car speeds reduced by restrictor plates. The second event was on the relatively flat one-mile Phoenix track and event No. 3 was on the intermediate Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Last weekend, the series visited the high-banked 0.533-mile Bristol Motor Speedway. While this weekend’s trip is the first visit to a two-mile track this year, information from the Las Vegas event could prove valuable in Southern California.

“We spend so much time in the offseason working on new bump-stops, shock packages, springs and sway bars that you hope the direction you’re working in is the right one,” said Gordon, who is a native of Vallejo, Calif. “We learned a lot about that at Vegas, but we’ll learn even more this weekend.

“It can be tricky when you get to a track like California. There’s a lot of different combinations of setups that can make the car go faster.”

Hitting the right setup could improve Gordon’s average at his home-state track.

Matt Kenseth – Crown Royal Racing – Fontana Advance

Team:          No. 17 Crown Royal Ford Fusion

    Crew Chief:  Jimmy Fennig

Chassis:      Primary: RK-707 (last raced at Texas Nov. 2010)

Kenseth on racing at Auto Club Speedway: “I really enjoy racing at Fontana since it’s a track where Roush Fenway typically runs well at, so I always look forward to racing there.  Fontana is a wide track which allows us to find multiple lines to race on and it’s also a place where we focus on horsepower.  The keys to Fontana are to have a fast car with good handling and then of course to have a clean day in the pits as well.  We had a great finish at Bristol last weekend and I’m really looking forward to another strong run this weekend.”

Crew chief Jimmy Fennig on racing at Auto Club Speedway: “Fontana is a race track where Roush Fenway has had success at in the past and I really feel like it’s a place where you really have to have a lot of aspects working together.  It’s a wide track where horsepower and handling really come into play, along with aerodynamics since it’s a down-force track.  In the past we’ve also seen tire wear come into play at Fontana so there really are a lot of factors that you want to make sure are all working together to have a successful race out there.  We earned a great finish last weekend in Bristol and we’ll look to carry that momentum with us out west this weekend.”

     FAST FACTS:

    •        In 18 Cup starts at Fontana, Kenseth has completed 4,453 of 4,455 laps (99.9 percent) and led for 497

     •        Kenseth has an average starting position of 21.2 and an average finishing position of 10.3 at ACS

    •        Kenseth has achieved three wins, seven top-five, and twelve top-10 finishes at Fontana in the Cup series

    •        Kenseth has finished within the top ten in nine of his last 11 starts at Auto Club Speedway

    •        This weekend at Fontana, Kenseth will pilot the No. 17 Crown Royal Ford Fusion

    •        Entering the weekend at Fontana, Kenseth is currently 13th in the NSCS driver point standings

SPECIAL GUEST THIS WEEKEND: This weekend at Fontana, Marine Corps S.SGT. Matthew Hansen will be serving as an honorary pit crew member of the No. 17 Crown Royal Ford driven by former NASCAR Champion Matt Kenseth.  As part of the experience, Hansen will attend the driver’s meeting with Kenseth, help the pit crew prepare for Sunday’s race, as well as watch the race from atop the No. 17 pit box.  This all comes on the heels of the San Marcos, Calif., resident being awarded naming rights to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway on April 30.  The race will officially be titled “Crown Royal Presents the Matthew & Daniel Hansen 400” in honor of Matthew and his fallen twin brother.

  • LABONTE SEEKS GREAT MOMENT AT AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY WITH LITTLE DEBBIE TOYOTA

LABONTE SEEKS GREAT MOMENT AT AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY WITH LITTLE DEBBIE TOYOTA

FONTANA, Calif. (March 22, 2011) – – Remaining within striking distance of the top 10 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship standings, Bobby Labonte and his JTG Daugherty Racing team are only eight points out of tenth place entering the Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway with the No. 47 Little Debbie Toyota Camry.

“I would love to be in the top 12 after 26 races,” Labonte said. “I know there’s a lot of guys out there that feel the same way and have great resources. We’re going to do the best we can and hope to have those great moments and good races that put us there.”

The 13th-place finish Labonte delivered at Bristol Motor Speedway last weekend advanced him one position to 14th in the standings. The 2000 champion is focused on continuing his points climb by working harder to excel at the two-mile D-shaped oval on Sunday.

“There are some great racetracks coming up on the schedule,” Labonte said. “Fontana is probably one I would say is not going to be the track I see myself excelling at. That’s why I’m going to work harder than I ever have before to go good there. It’s one that’s buffaloed me the past few times, but I’m not going to let it this time.”

Labonte’s credentials at California are definitely nothing to sneeze at. Twice Labonte has finished second at Auto Club Speedway. Not to mention, he has a total of four top-five and five top-10 finishes and also won one of his 26 pole awards in 2001 with Joe Gibbs Racing at that track.

“Bobby has some solid finishes at California,” crew chief Frank Kerr said. “We’re coming off a strong run at Bristol and it’s great for momentum and we hope it continues. Things are really coming together for us and it’s been a lot of fun working with Bobby. He has so much experience and controls himself when his helmet is squeezing him too tight. We witnessed that at Bristol when he did a 360 without hitting the fence or losing spots. His experience makes all the difference in the world because he has been there, done that.”

One thing Labonte has not done before is drive for Little Debbie. This will be his first race with the brand as they continue to promote their newest creation Little Debbie Cloud Cakes. In addition, they are on a mission – the Little Debbie Smile Mission – to find a million smiles to make up a Little Debbie photo mosaic portrait. HOORAHS AND WAZZUPS: SPRING CLEANING IN THE BRISTOL VICTORY LANE

It was another interesting weekend at the Kyle Busch, oh excuse me, Bristol, Motor Speedway. At the conclusion of the Jeff Byrd 500, presented by Food City, we witnessed another spring cleaning, with a large broom, in the historic speedway’s victory lane in what now appears to be a yearly event. We continued to watch the performance level of the one car from Richard Childress Racing that had no real expectations to begin with and we witnessed a dramatic episode that brought the start and park concept to a whole new level. With those thoughts in mind, let’s begin this week with:

[media-credit name=”Barry Albert” align=”alignright” width=”288″][/media-credit]HOORAH for Kyle Busch for another stunning performance that saw him sweep a NASCAR weekend at Bristol. Last August the “Rowdy One” swept all three of NASCAR’s national touring series events at Bristol. This year he won both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup events which gives him five consecutive wins in five starts there. Once again the race winner was presented with a large broom for the ceremonial sweeping of victory lane.

Busch started the weekend by winning the Scott’s EZ Seed 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race on Saturday with a very dominating performance. He led 268 of the 300 laps for his 45th career win. He also became the first Nationwide Series driver to lead over 10,000 laps.

During Sunday’s Jeff Byrd 500, presented by Food City, Busch had to work a little harder and spent the final 60 laps of the race fending off the efforts of Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson. During that process he still managed to lead the race seven times for a total of 153 laps out of 500. He also collected his 20th NASCAR Sprint Cup win which ties with the legendary Speedy Thompson on the series’ all time win list. He now has at least one Sprint Cup win per season over the past seven consecutive years. His five Bristol wins now ties him with Jeff Gordon and his brother Kurt for the most wins among modern era drivers. It’s also interesting to note that ten of the last 19 Sprint Cup races at Bristol has been won by a Busch brother.

In a period of approximately 24 hours, Kyle Busch ran two races totaling 800 laps. He led the two events a total of nine times for 421 laps and collected a combined $237,141 in prize money. Those numbers are just simply awesome.

Busch deserves another HOORAH for a great one liner following the pre race driver introductions. After receiving a large bushel basket of boo berries from many of the fans, Busch smiled and asked “why can’t we all be friends?”

The always fun Kyle Petty also gets a HOORAH for his one liner during the SPEED Channel’s “NASCAR Victory Lane” show. Petty was commenting on how Kyle Busch “is the guy” and further stated ” if they unloaded shopping carts from Food City, he would still be the guy.”

One can’t help but notice new maturity levels in this driver. During his victory lane interview he bestowed well deserved praise for the performance of his pit crew especially following the final pit stop when they sent off of pit road in first place. Busch also made it a point to ask the fans to include the earthquake victims from Japan in their prayers. During the traditional post race interview on the SPEED Channel, Busch was asked about those new maturity levels. He credited the presence of his new wife Samantha in his life as well as the influence of his team owner “Coach” Joe Gibbs.

HOORAH to driver Paul Menard for another rock solid Sprint Cup performance for Richard Childress Racing. Out of the four Chevrolets in the RCR stable, it’s Menard’s team that has surprisingly been the top performer throughout the first four races of the year. Menard led 35 laps at Bristol and finished fifth. That effort also moves him up to fifth in the championship points standings only 14 markers away from the top of the chart.

This driver’s Sprint Cup career has always been financially supported by his family owned business: Menard’s Home Improvement stores with associate sponsorship packages coming from the hardware/appliance companies that has been connected with the Menards for many years now. Up until the start of this season, Paul Menard’s driving career hasn’t really been that stellar and there were plenty of snide comments from observers that basically said “he’s driving his daddy’s checkbook.”

With the performance levels we’ve seen so far in 2011 those snide comments seem to be subsiding. During last Sunday’s “NASCAR Victory Lane” program SPEED Channel analyst Kenny Wallace likely put this situation in perspective when he said “I don’t care if this kid’s father has a lot of money, he’s the one driving the race car.”

This week’s HOORAH for making chicken salad out of chicken do do goes to RCR driver Kevin Harvick and his Budweiser crew. Kasey Kahne’s very loose Toyota bottled up traffic and the result was a multi car crash that produced the eighth yellow flag of the race. Harvick, following a hit in the rear bumper from Mark Martin’s car, went spinning down the backstretch.

Harvick, who led the race for 37 laps, got the extra effort from what he termed “a championship caliber team” and drove his way to a commendable sixth place finish. Harvick began the 2011 season 37th in points following a blown engine at Daytona. This team has worked and clawed their way up to 15th in the standings following the first four races and appear to be on the way to the top where observers said they would be.

Harvick also gets a HOORAH for the best radio transmission, following his spin out, when he said “that’s two times in four races when the five, (Mark Martin), has taken us out. They need to check his old ass for vision.”

WAZZUP with another roller coaster of a race for RCR driver Clint Bowyer? During the first, early race, multi car crash it appeared that Bowyer arrived at the scene just a little too fast and rammed the back of Jamie McMurray’s Chevrolet. By the way McMurray gets a HOORAH for a great radio transmission when said “doesn’t he have a spotter?”

The situation got worse for Bowyer when his engine blew up a short time later and he had to settle for a disappointing 35th place finish. A pre season favorite to make the Chase For The Championship has now slipped to 24th in the standings within a new points configuration that makes digging out of a hole very difficult.

The same level of WAZZUP goes to RCR driver Jeff Burton whose racing luck so far this season has left Sprint Cup observers baffled. During the Bristol race Burton felt a strong vibration in his Chevrolet that was later determined to be caused by a loose wheel. The result was an unscheduled pit stop that left him two laps down. It also led to a 20th place finish. He did manage to elevate himself to 29th in the points but here’s another pre season Chase favorite who has to dig himself out of a hole.

WAZZUP with the Bristol efforts of the other two drivers from Joe Gibbs Racing? While Kyle Busch was carrying the JGR flag for the team his team mates, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano, were in the midst of a struggle. Hamlin’s Toyota found himself caught up in the race’s first multi car crash. He had to settle for a 30th place finish 12 laps down. Worse yet, Hamlin fell from eighth to 17th in the points standings.

Meanwhile Joey Logano was struggling with horsepower issues and finish 23d at Bristol and left 30th in the points. He actually came over his radio and yelled “this motor still f***ing sucks.” That was a stunning comment coming from the usually mild mannered Logano. It’s certain that the comment even baffled the usually stoic “Coach” Joe Gibbs.

HOORAH to Goodyear and NASCAR officials for springing into action when it appeared there was going to be issues with the right side tires. During the pre race practice sessions there were some genuine concern regarding right side tire wear. There was additional concern over rubber from the tires not being worked into the Bristol Motor Speedway’s concrete surface that would have provided the extra grip the race cars required.

After conferring with NASCAR over the situation, Goodyear trucked in approximately 1,300 tires from their Charlotte-North Carolina center on Saturday which featured a harder compound. By the end of the racing weekend late Sunday afternoon the general consensus was the back up plan worked out very well.

A giant WAZZUP goes out to driver Jennifer Jo Cobb and team owner Rick Russell over their start and park argument just minutes prior to Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race.

Russell claims that there was a team meeting last Friday where he explained that they would have to start and park at Bristol due to the high cost of repairing the crash damage on team’s only race car after it was caught up in a wreck the week before at Las Vegas. He also claimed that’s why he didn’t purchase race tires and hire a pit crew for the Bristol event because he knew in advance that start and park status was going to become a reality and it made more sense to save the one car for next week’s race at the Auto Club Speedway in California which he had already entered. He further claimed that Cobb and her crew chief, Steve Kuykendall, purchased tires and hired a pit crew for Bristol without is knowledge.

On the other side of the argument, Cobb admits that she had heard some “rumblings” about start and park status at Bristol but wasn’t actually informed of the decision until literally minutes before the start of the race. She later said “I have a commitment to my sponsors, the fans and to NASCAR that I am not a start and park driver. I’m really serious about this.” She further claims that Russell allegedly said that if she didn’t comply with the start and park order he would have NASCAR black flag her. It was further alleged that an angry Cobb, along with her crew chief and the crew members they hired, left. In the extreme last minute Russell had Chris Lawson suit up and get into his car. Lawson started 41st, ran four laps and Russell collected $16,725 in prize money which basically covered the cost of repairs from the Las Vegas wreck the week before.

At the beginning of the 2011 season Russell’s 2nd Chance Motorsports and Jennifer Jo Cobb Racing formed an alliance. The plan was to run at least the first five races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in hopes of landing sponsorship for the full season. It now appears that this racing marriage is heading for divorce. Russell has already announced that Tim Andrews will be in his car next week in California and also announced plans to file a breach of contract suit against Cobb. Meanwhile, on Monday afternoon, Cobb announced that she will be in California next Saturday driving the #41 car for Rick Ware Racing.

What we have here are two racing organizations that are financially strapped due to sponsorship issues. At this point neither party can really afford to pay attorney’s fees to resolve their differences in court. Perhaps Cobb put it best with her suggestion that said “let’s just part ways, everybody moves on and let’s go racing.”

    *************

The final WAZZUP from the weekend goes to Roush Fenway Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr who received a penalty from NASCAR, during Saturday’s Nationwide Series race, for being in the wrong position prior to a double file restart. Between the presence of the spotter, crew chief and any other team member watching from pit road, it begs the question: exactly how did something like that go unnoticed?

    **************

The final HOORAH of the week goes to the special music for Jimmie Johnson and Brian Vickers played during driver introductions last Sunday. The Bristol Motor Speedway again asked the drivers to pick their own special music to accompany them as they walked out on the stage.

Johnson and Vickers thought it would be fun to pick each other’s music and keep it a secret. Johnson was introduced to the fans to the sound of “The Thong Song” by Cisco. However that paled in comparison to Vickers being surprised with Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like A Woman” when he was introduced.
