TOYOTA NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Post-Qualifying Notes & Quotes Las Vegas Motor Speedway

5th, KYLE BUSCH 6th, JOEY LOGANO 9th, MARTIN TRUEX JR. 17th, DENNY HAMLIN 19th, BRIAN VICKERS 24th, BOBBY LABONTE 25th, DAVID REUTIMANN 27th, CASEY MEARS 30th, KASEY KAHNE 31st, JOE NEMECHEK 36th, LANDON CASSILL 43rd, MICHAEL MCDOWELL

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Snickers Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Starting Position: 5th How is your car after practice and qualifying? “We’ve been a little behind the eight ball so far this weekend with our Snickers Peanut Butter Squared Camry. It’s coming along. The guys made some really good adjustments there and the car drove a lot better. Hopefully we can carry some of those into tomorrow and get a good race practice and get after them on Sunday. It seems to be like a good lap, but it’s all relative until others go out.”

Does the track change as the sun goes down? “It doesn’t tell you a whole lot. It tells you the guys that are going to be fast, for sure. The sun going down and making shade in turns one and two makes a lot of grip. You can really pickup a lot of speed down there. Still, turns three and four are really slick — the sun shining down there and always shines down there. It’s kind of like Charlotte — it’s the treacherous turns three and four. So far, so good. We’ll play it by ear and collect our thoughts to get a game plan for tomorrow.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 Home Depot Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Starting Position: 6th How was your qualifying lap? “I felt like turns one and two were awesome, I felt really good. I went into three and got down in there good, picked up the gas and started picking up a little bit of a push and didn’t get it down as much as I should have. If I held it wide open, I probably wouldn’t have hit the wall but you never know. It’s still a good day for us. We’ll have a decent start and go from there. I have a good Home Depot Toyota, just could have had a little bit more and that would have been right where we needed to be.”

How was your car? “I felt like my car was pretty good. I gave up a little bit off of turn four, I felt like I picked up a little bit of a push. I probably could have kept the throttle down and may not have hit the wall, but I tried not to lift off the corner, that’s when you kill your speed. I felt like I wasn’t going to make it, but looking back at it I probably would have. We’re talking a couple hundredths of a second. It might not have been much, but it might be enough to beat Kyle (Busch). Either way, a good run for us here. I have a good race car too, so we’ll see how it goes for us.”

MARTIN TRUEX JR., No. 56 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Starting Position: 9th How was your qualifying run? “It was a good run. We had a good day today in our NAPA Toyota. I was happy with the way we unloaded. The guys have been doing a good job this year. We’ve had fast race cars, we haven’t had great finishes yet, hopefully this will be our week. The guys did a good job today and it was a good run for us. This is by far the best car I’ve ever had here at Vegas, so I’m excited about the weekend.”

How is your second season with this team? “The guys have all worked hard in the offseason. We really started hitting on some things and getting comfortable as a team at the end of the year last year and it’s really showing. We’ve got a lot of confidence and I have a lot of confidence in these guys and the cars they’re able to give me. It’s fun to come to the race track when you know they’re going to give you what you ask for.”

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Ground Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Starting Position: 17th

BRIAN VICKERS, No. 83 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team Starting Position: 19th Can you talk about your qualifying run? “The car was significantly better than practice and I’m happy with that. I think the guys made a huge gain in the car and it was as good as it’s been all day. Unfortunately I probably left a little bit on the table. I was not expecting it to be that good. I was a little bit down on turns one and two, but feel like I got most of it out of turns three and four.”

BOBBY LABONTE, No. 47 Kingsford Toyota Camry, JTG-Daugherty Racing Starting Position: 24th How was your qualifying run? “We picked up from practice and I’m proud of that, I just didn’t think I got the best lap I needed. I got into turn one right, but I didn’t get through the middle and I had to stay off the throttle too long. Then, I got back to the gas and I was frustrated by the time I got to turn three. I think I did okay there, then it seemed like I just didn’t quite have the grip I needed. I didn’t run the line I needed and wanted. I just didn’t get the best lap I should have got. It was so close. Turn one was key with the bumps today. That’s a big factor we fought all day

DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 00 Tums Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing Starting Position: 25th Are you happy with your qualifying results? “We were okay, we go off in practice. The first qualifying run we made was pretty good. After that, we couldn’t seem to get the car tightened up enough. The car was tighter and we’re going to suffer a little bit here. We went out early and it’s going to get a little bit cooler and the track is going to get faster. In the end, we made the car better. We had a big pickup, we just didn’t pickup as much as we needed too.”

CASEY MEARS, No. 13 GEICO Toyota Camry, Germain Racing Starting Position: 27th

KASEY KAHNE, No. 4 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team Starting Position: 30th How was your qualifying run? “It just wasn’t very good. We kind of were up out of the track, in front of the car and the back. It just wasn’t as good as what we were looking for. Hopefully we’ll figure it out and be better on Sunday.” Is there a reason you only ran one lap? “Because I was out of the track and it would have only been worse on the second lap.”

JOE NEMECHEK, No. 87 NEMCO Toyota Camry, NEMCO Motorsports Starting Position: 31st

LANDON CASSILL, No. 60 Big Red Toyota Camry, Germain Racing Starting Position: 36th

MICHAEL MCDOWELL, No. 66 HP Racing LLC Toyota Camry, PRISM Motorsports Starting Position: 43rd

    FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES

    Kobalt Tools 400 Qualifying March 4, 2011

    Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Matt Kenseth, Marcos Ambrose and Carl Edwards swept the top three spots in qualifying Friday for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For Kenseth it is his fifth pole in 403 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races and his first in 2011 and at LVMS. His pole lap was also a track record. The trio talked about their accomplishment with media members after qualifying.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ON THE POLE? “Five poles in 12 years, that is a little better than I though. It is good to be on pole and I look forward to the race on Sunday. We worked really hard on race practice today and had a lot of speed and in qualifying trim we obviously had a lot of speed. This new qualifying format is kind of nerve racking if you are the fastest car in practice because you are back there watching these guys and you start to feel like you don’t want to mess this up. It feels great to get on the pole and we don’t get them very often so it feels great to get one.”

WHERE DID YOU START SEEING THE CHANGE IN YOUR INTERMEDIATE TRACK PROGRAM? “Everything is so tight it is really hard to tell. I have to give Doug Yates and the engine shop a lot of credit because I think we have more power than we ever had last year. This is our first full season with the FR9 and we started running better on it toward the end of last year. In Phoenix our engine ran really well and now here this weekend you see all the Fords up toward the top. He hasn’t told me that he has had big gains but he has been in a really good mood lately so have a feeling that he thinks we have had big gains and the speed is up. I think that is part of it. They keep working to make our cars better and we got better toward the end of last year and you really don’t know about this year for probably about another month or so but I think we can continue down this path of making ourselves better.”

HOW ARE YOU DEALING WITH THE BUMPS AND HOW WILL YOU DEAL WITH THEM IN THE RACE? “I went around them today. They are bumpy, they are there and you have to deal with them, especially in the race when you have to race around other cars. It is pretty rough down there. Three and four seem to be pretty smooth. You really have to work on your front springs and shocks and bump stops and sway bar and everything to get the front end to go through them good.”

DID YOU NOTICE ANY CHANGE WITH THE FRONT NOSE LAST WEEK OR WILL THIS WEEK BE THE DECIDER ON THAT? “I didn’t notice anything in Phoenix really. We were fairly far off. We didn’t run as good as we did there the last two times really. I didn’t notice a difference there and to be honest with you I don’t know that you will notice a big difference here either. They changed it the same on all the cars so one make won’t have an advantage over another. I don’t know that you notice a big difference other than it looks nicer than it did before. We might notice a better performance but I don’t expect to I guess.”

DID YOU EVER TALK TO VICKERS AFTER LAST WEEK? “I felt bad on the way home because I heard he was mad at me because somebody said he thought I caused the wreck and honestly I didn’t think I did. Obviously when there is a big wreck nobody wants it to be their fault. When you wreck you might say things you aren’t too sure on. I sent him a text like we all do these days and never heard back from him. I figured after I went home and watched the clip that I would get an apology but I never did. That is okay though. I don’t think we touched to be honest with you. That rubber mark is from the 18 car earlier in the race. If we did touch, you could kick a car harder than that. I don’t feel like I did anything wrong there.”

CARL EDWARDS, NO. 99 Aflac Ford Fusion – THE TOP THREE QUALIFIERS ARE ALL FORD AND YOU HAVE TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT THE CHANCE TO COLLECT THAT FIRST WIN OF 2011. “It is good that the first two rows are Fords. That is a testament to how hard our guys are working at the shop and Doug Yates and everyone with the FR9 engine they have done an amazing job. We talked about earlier that we wanted to see how we ran in this first 1.5 mile that would be a little bit of a test for the rest of the season. So far it looks really good. I am excited about the race trim tomorrow and we will see how we run in race trim but this is great for us.

WHERE EXACTLY ARE THE BUMPS THAT YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT? “They are in the middle of turns 1 and 2 a little bit on the entry side so a little bit before center. I think it is where the tunnel goes under the race track. I think that is settling there. I thought I could go around them on top, but it was just as bumpy on top of the race track for me. I think that is why you saw guys moving up. I think some could get through the bumps easier on top. It is right there in the middle of that corner and it really nothing to speak of in 3 and 4 it is very smooth down there. Don’t fix them the bumps are awesome; you got to have something out there to drive around and battle with. That is what makes racing fun.

MARCOS AMBROSE, driver of the No. 9 Stanley Ford Fusion – CONGRATULATION ON A SUPER QUALIFYING EFFORT AND ON STARTING OUT TOWARDS THE FRONT ON SUNDAY. “Thank you it was a great day for us. My Stanley team has been supporting me through a slow start, be had a crash at Daytona and we had a 16th place at Phoenix. Coming in here I really wanted to step up and with the help of Ford we have an all Ford front row. We got a great bunch in Roush that help us get these cars dialed in like we do. I am thrilled for Richard Petty and thrilled for me and thrilled for Stanley. I took a chance and I really stuck my neck out to see if I had what it took just nice to be up here talking to you and hopefully it will be the same on Sunday.”

MARCOS, THAT BRIEF TIME YOU WERE ON THE POLE WHAT DID IT FEEL LIKE AND THEN CARL BUMPED INTO YOU WITH HIS CAR? “I am pretty stubborn, stupid and strong and so you can hit me at 30 mph and it doesn’t matter. It is just a great day for us. I have been second a few times now in my cup career in qualifying so I have been bumped out several times and it never feels any nicer. I am really pleased today. Matt [Kenseth] did a great lap and you can’t complain when someone beats you on speed. It isn’t like he lucked into it. He had the fastest car in practice and he delivered when it counted. No bad feelings today and I am just happy for Richard Petty Motorsports who went through a lot at the end of last year. To be strong this early with AJ [Allmendinger] running top three in points it is just a good feeling over there looking forward to hopefully keeping this run going.

Carl Edwards Continued – CARL, WERE YOU CONCERNED AT ALL DURING THE OFF SEASON THAT OTHER TEAMS MIGHT CATCH UP TO YOU ON THE 1.5 MILE TRACKS AND HOW MUCH DOES THIS MEAN THAT YOU HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STAY AHEAD OF EVERYBODY WHO WAS FOCUSED ON TRYING TO CATCH YOU GUYS ON THESE TRACKS. “Well assuming the race goes well, we don’t know how we will perform in the race. Assuming it goes well I will be very satisfied with the amount of work and the progress we made throughout the winter. It is so easy in this sport to be running really well and to sit back and go wow are fast and it only takes that long for everyone to catch you and pass you up. Our guys led by Robbie Riser and Ford did really well throughout the winter. To come here and our first lap on the track our car ran a 29.05 it was a screaming fast lap. It is just unbelievable. I think I can speak for Marcos and all my Ford teammates we are glad to be driving these race cars right now.”

THESE FIRST TWO RACES THE RACE TRACKS THEMSELVES YOU GOT OFF TO ROCKY STARTS, DOES THE MILE-AND-A-HALF TRACK GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO SORT THINGS OUT AND GO RACING FOR THE DAY AS OPPOSED FIXING A LOT OF CARS THE FIRST 30 LAPS OF THE RACE. “I don’t think you can predict what is going to happen. It is going to be a cut throat competitive race from start to finish. I like to sit here and say that it is going to be really great and everyone is going to be cordial to one another, but I have a feeling it is going to be a really tough race. I hope it goes well, but that is the state of the sport right now people are driving with their hearts out and fighting for everything they got. That is what you are going to see on Sunday.”

Marcos Ambrose Continued – “I go back to some of the ‘Go at it Boys’ mentality and how we are used to rubbing on each other a lot and the side by side restarts. We are used to it, maybe too used to it.”

DOES RPM GET ITS ENGINES FROM ROUSH YATES? “Yes, yes we do.”

HOW DO YOU GET AROUND THE BUMPS IN ONE AND TWO? “I went up the race track and it worked well for me up there. I went there all day and that is where I will try to go in the race as well.”

Carl Edwards Continued – WHAT IS MORE INTRIGUING FOR YOU, RUNNING WITH THE BUMPS OR JUMPING OFF THE STRATOSPHERE? “I am telling you guys you have to try that, it is a blast. It looks real simple with those cables but when you have to take that step of the edge it is wild. My heart was pounding similarly for my qualifying lap.”

  • Kenseth Caps Stellar Roush Fenway Effort with Vegas Pole

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (March 4, 2011) — Matt Kenseth capped off a strong day for Roush Fenway by capturing the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup Race at the 1.5-mile oval. Kenseth covered Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 28.589 seconds (188.88 mph) to lead three Roush Fenway Fords that qualified in the top five for Sunday’s race. Carl Edwards qualified third and Greg Biffle was fourth. Ford occupied the first four positions in the effort. David Ragan had a fast car in practice, but spun out during the session. He was able to save the car, but had taken the green flag and will start 42nd on Sunday.

“It feels great,” said Kenseth. “Qualifying is not my strong suit but I knew we had a really fast car today when we did our last qualifying run. Honestly this is the most nervous I have been before qualifying in probably five years at least because I knew we had a shot at the pole and I knew last week we really messed up. I didn’t want to mess up a fast car today, so I was really happy with that.”

Roush Fenway has won six times in the Sprint Cup Series at Las Vegas, but this is just the second pole for the team at LVMS. It is Kenseth’s first pole at LVMS and the fifth of his Sprint Cup career. Kenseth will look for his third career win at Las Vegas; he won back to back races there in 2003 and 2004.

Sunday’s race is slated for 3:00 p.m. EST and will televised live on FOX.

    March 4, 2011

LAS VEGAS (Mar. 4, 2011) – A total of 17 Team Chevy drivers will take the green flag for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Ryan Newman, No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet and Mark Martin, No. 5 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet, posted top-10 qualifying efforts for the 267-lap/400.5-mile race securing the eighth and 10th starting positions respectively in the 43-car field.

Matt Kenseth (Ford) won the pole. Marcos Ambrose (Ford), Carl Edwards (Ford), Greg Biffle (Ford) and Kyle Busch (Toyota) complete the top-five starters.

FOX TV, PRN Radio and Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 128 will bring live coverage of race three of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season set to start at 3:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 39 HAAS AUTOMATION CHEVROLET – QUALIFIED 8TH

The Haas Automation Chevrolet bounced around really badly in turns one and two on that lap,” Newman said. “We weren’t as fast as I thought we would be in qualifying, and I think we probably could have had a better lap if the car would have been more stable. That’s something will have to work on tomorrow in practice, but based off our practice earlier today, I think we’re going to have a pretty good racecar on Sunday.”

    MARK MARTIN, NO. 5 GODADDY.COM CHEVROLET – QUALIFIED 10TH

WAS THAT ONE OF THE WILDEST LAPS YOU’VE TAKEN IN A WHILE?

“Well, it wasn’t the wildest but it was pretty exciting. Just kudos to Lance McGrew and the GoDaddy.com team. We were really off and they were slinging wrenches and getting in there and doing it in practice. They made the car better every time and that was a big pickup. Obviously it won’t be a top five. It probably won’t be a top 10 but it will be close to it and that’s much better than we were in practice. We’re proud of the gains that we made and I’m proud of them and I like seeing them work and I like seeing them with such great attitudes and we’re having a little fun.”

CAN YOU DRIVE IT LIKE THAT FOR 400 MILES HERE ON SUNDAY?

“Yeah, I’ll slow down just a little bit but I can do it (laughs)!”

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DUPONT CHEVROLET – QUALIFIED 13TH

THIS WEEK YOU’RE GOING TO TRY TO PUT DUPONT BACK IN VICTORY LANE, RIGHT?

“Oh, yeah, we’d love to do that. They’ve been amazing over the years and it’s fun to have them on board this weekend. It’s been an adventurous weekend for us with the DuPont Chevrolet starting practice with the way we did (spin). I thought we laid down a pretty good lap. That’s why you’ve got to be good in practice. You want to get that late spot in qualifying. And now we’re really starting to see some guys put down some laps. So a good lap. A decent lap; and a great effort by the team. And now we go from here.”

    ON HIS LAP

“Mark Martin laid a pretty good lap down. I didn’t think mine was flawless. So to come as close as we did to him, I was pretty happy. And with this new format, you just know cars are going to keep getting faster. I like the pick-up. I like the grip the car had. And it’s been an interesting day for us. I think we’re going to end on a fairly positive note here and I’m happy about that. So we’ll take it for the DuPont Chevrolet.”

  • Kurt Busch Wants to Even the Score with Brother Kyle and Las Vegas Win

When Kyle and Kurt Busch had their media availability scheduled back-to-back on Friday afternoon it became family hour.

[media-credit id=41 align=”alignright” width=”290″][/media-credit]The two tell their tales well. From growing up and going into different racing directions to competing against each other when they could, both have come a long way. And depending on whom you ask, you’ll get different versions of whose better and who won the most races.

Kurt will even tell you that their father told him he had to let Kyle win every once in a while. Being the older brother though, that was hard to do. Good thing that was then and this is now, there’s no way either one would lift for the other.

Reaching the highest level in NASCAR, the Sprint Cup Series, there’s no one they’d rather beat than each other. Family members competing against each other in NASCAR is nothing new, the Busch brothers are the latest to do so and come to Las Vegas with a little more than bragging rights on the line.

In 2009 Kyle won the Daytona 500 of the family, capturing the win in their hometown at their home track.  Kurt hasn’t been a slouch here either, making it no surprised that the two are favorites heading into Sunday. It’s also not surprising that it’s a race that’s looked forward to.

“Coming out here to the hometown is always exciting,” said Busch. “There’s a lot of friends and family, the exciting part just being in the hometown.”

While the Kobalt Tools 400 will only be the third race of the season, the two sit atop the Cup Series point standings and ready for a family battle for the championship. While Kurt sits behind his brother an argument can be made that he’s one of the drivers that is off to the best start of the 2011 season.

After going two-for-three in Daytona, a fifth in Daytona and an eighth place last weekend in Phoenix, Busch heads into Vegas with one thing on mind: even the score with his brother.

“The fact that he’s won here, yeah it stings a little bit,” said Busch about little brother Kyle.

“I’ve been on pole, he’s been on pole here. It’s Vegas. It’s one of the top five marquee events of the year. For Daytona, Indy, Charlotte, I think Vegas ranks up there with a lot of guys. With him winning here it was great for our family and all the friends that have supported us over the years. I just want to be able to do it as well.”

Being a past champion, something Kyle has yet to accomplish, there comes a time when it seems there’s not a lot left for the driver to accomplish. Not for Busch, he’s never won the Daytona 500 or the Brickyard 400 and he does want to, but winning at Las Vegas would just mean more. If he is to do so on Sunday it’ll have to come after saying working on what he says is a No. 22 Shell / Pennzoil Dodge that was “off” in practice.

“You’ve got to get through the bumps that we’ve been struggling with in Turn 1 and 2,” said Busch

“You also have to have a car that doesn’t burn off the front tires which we might struggle with on Sunday. We’ve definitely got our work cut out for us on what we can do to improve our car.”

The hope is that their finish on Sunday will propel the team into a season in which they’ll be championship contenders.

“Hopefully, we leave here with a solid finish knowing that we’ve accomplished something special. It’s only three races in. There’s still a long way to go. I always look at the season as the first seven to nine races on where you rank; after that point in the season is how you’re going to settle in for the long summer runs.”

While that sounds great on paper, this is a race he badly wants to win. In order to do so, Busch said his team will be making sure they do and use everything they learned from this race last year over the course of this weekend. He won the pole with a new track record but finished a disappointing 35th last year.

This Sunday Kurt will start behind Kyle on the starting grid. It will make for a long and interesting day as he tries to not only get his Vegas win but keep Kyle from getting another. It shouldn’t be too hard because as Kurt says, whenever it comes to a battle with Kyle, big brother always wins because he know more.

    FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES

    Kobalt Tools 400 Qualifying, Page 1 March 4, 2011

    Las Vegas Motor Speedway

MARCOS AMBROSE – Stanley Ford Fusion (Qualified 2nd) “It was a great lap. I am so proud of our Stanley team. They took a huge risk to put me on. I had a chance to make it in the sport or get kicked out pretty quick with the change I made for 2011. For Richard Petty to give me the chance like he has and for us to deliver in our third race with a good lap time is great. I am really excited about it. We are in the hunt for the pole and you can’t ask for much more than that.”

GREG BIFFLE – 3M Post-It Ford Fusion (Qualified 4th) – “Hopefully we end up with the top three here. We have our cars running good. It shows how hard these guys have worked back at the shop. I feel bad because my car had more speed than that and I missed it just a hair. That is why we have qualifying and the race too. We will wait and see what happens.”

CARL EDWARDS – Scotts/Kellogg’s Ford Fusion (Qualified 3rd) – “That lap was fast. I couldn’t tell exactly how fast it was while I was out there because we picked up so much. Right now we are seeing speeds that no one could touch in practice. I didn’t really know what it was going to do. I guess Matt is out there right now and I hate to say this with Marcos standing right there but I hope he blows the doors off both of us because six-one thousandths is going to be hard for me to go to sleep missing by that much.”

DAVID RAGAN – UPS Ford Fusion (Qualified 43rd) – “I got too greedy. It was a great lap going and I got back to the throttle real early and just a little too early. I was back 100 percent and used up a little too much race track coming out of two and got into the sand and trash on top and couldn’t hang on. I am glad we didn’t hit anything. We have a great car and I wish we could have finished that lap. It was going to be fast. We were going to be on the front row with that lap but I just didn’t do what I needed to do to get back around. We will have a lot of work on Sunday but we will be fine.

MATT KENSETH – Crown Royal Ford Fusion (Qualified 1st) – “It feels great. Qualifying is not my strong suit but I knew we had a really fast car today when we did our last qualifying run. Honestly this is the most nervous as I have been before qualifying in probably five years at least because I knew we had a shot at the pole and I knew last week we really messed up. I didn’t want to mess up a fast car today, so I was really happy with that.”

TONY RAINES – Race Fuel Energy Ford Fusion (Qualified 42nd) – “We have been struggling in one and two. The track is bumpier than it was last year and we haven’t found the package yet. We get through 3 and 4 okay. When we get into one and two we bottom out and are losing a bunch of time. We tried something a little different in the right front for qualifying but it still did it. We will work on it for Sunday.”

TRAVIS KVAPIL – Long John Silver’s Ford Fusion (Qualified 40th) – “We have been quite a ways off from where we need to be. We changed the set up 180 degrees to be closer to our teammate David Gilliland because they had speed on practice. The car drove 70-percent better than where we were. We have a ways to go to get it where it needs for Sunday. Huge strides though right there. I’m happy with the gains we are making but we still have a ways to go.”

DAVID GILLILAND – Taco Bell Ford Fusion (Qualified 35th) – “We hit the splitter really hard right there and upset the car. It threw our lap off from where w needed to be. We need to work on our car to get it off the race track. It is the biggest thing for us that we need to work on. We gotta get it up off the track.”

TREVOR BAYNE – Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion (Qualified 16th) – “I ran out of room of the corners there. I think with another 20 feet we could have had stayed in the throttle and had a faster time but that’s the case for everybody. We got tight and couldn’t stay in it. It’s a big pickup from practice. I know that probably won’t be the fastest but they did a good job with this Ford Motorcraft/Quick Lane Fusion getting it ready for qualifying. We have a lot of fast Ford teammates coming up later and hopefully they do good. I think this should be a decent spot for us which is good.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER – Best Buy Ford Fusion (Qualified 7th) – “The car has been really good so far. It’s no secret that this isn’t my best track. It felt really good in race trim but struggled a bit in practice because we were a little tight. We made the car a little better but we were still a tad tight there. You never know with this new qualifying format because all the fast guys are coming up behind you. Tar should put us on the edge of the top 15 which isn’t too bad here. We should be able to see the front.

NOT BAD FOR A TRACK THAT HAS ALWAYS GIVEN YOU PROBLEMS. “You always want to be better but I think we have a good race car. I have gotten a lot more confident on this race track just in today. I knew we would coMe here with a lot better stuff than we have ever had. The car is fast. This motor is screaming. There are a lot of fast Fords to go. Hopefully Ford gets the pole.”

Post-Qualifying Quotes NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

It’s kind of good and it’s kind of bad. To have not done much in 12 months to help our car get though the bumps better is confusing. We just need to plug away at that. I may have lost some speed in Turns 3 and 4 with handling, a little bit in the tight side. We had to go out early because we struggled in practice. Maybe we’re going to get bit by that qualifying bug, where you qualify in order of how you practice. Our Pennzoil Ultra Dodge was better. We picked up three or four tenths and we need to continue to do that. We have to get through the bumps better between Turns 1 and 2.”

BRAD KESELOWSKI (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger R/T) Qualified 20th “I thought that our Miller Lite Dodge was a little bit faster than it actually qualified. The car handled decent, we just need a little bit of speed. We’ll keep working on it tomorrow. I thought that we had a pretty good day so far. We didn’t quite get the qualifying lap that we hoped for today. It’s pretty bumpy in Turns 1 & 2 and guys are really struggling getting a hold of the track. We just need to keep working on this Miller Lite Dodge and get ready for Sunday.”

ROBBY GORDON (No. 7 SPEED Energy Dodge Charger R/T) Qualified 38th “For us, it was just an OK qualifying run in our SPEED Energy Dodge. We’re just bouncing around. We went from one direction to the other for qualifying. We’re just struggling trying to get hold of the race track. I thought that we would be better than that when we rolled out here. Turns 1 and 2 have gotten so rough, the mechanical grip has changed so much because of the bumps. We just need to figure out the right combination that our Dodge likes.”

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DUPONT CHEVROLET, met with media and discussed his win last week at Phoenix, attending post-Oscar parties, appearing on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, spinning in practice, and more. Full Transcript:

TALK ABOUT THE WIN AT PHOENIX AND HOW IT HAS IMPACTED YOU COMING TO LAS VEGAS

“It’s definitely been a great week; with a lot of fun things that I haven’t had a chance to experience in a while you know, doing all the media that comes with winning a race. And it’s been awesome and I couldn’t wait to get here to the race track as to follow-up that momentum. Practice didn’t start quite the way we were hoping (he spun out on cold tires) and we had to claw our way back there at the end of practice to get where we needed to be but I’m still feeling good about the weekend and the team and the season. We’re still definitely riding that momentum from last week’s win. That was huge. The whole team is just fired up.”

DOES IT FEEL ANY DIFFERENT NOW THAT DUPONT IS NOT YOUR FULL-TIME SPONSOR? DOES IT FEEL GOOD TO BE BACK WITH DUPONT FOR THIS WEEKEND?

“It feels great to be back in this paint scheme and this uniform. It’s definitely a comfortable feeling because it’s something that, you know, we’ve been with DuPont for so long. I think it felt more different being at Daytona and Phoenix last week with a new sponsor on the car and not being DuPont than it does this week. This week kind of feels like just getting back to the way things have been. So it’s very comfortable. It doesn’t matter what’s on the outside. It’s what that race car does. That’s what your focus is. The one thing that stands out about this weekend and talking about the win at Phoenix is unfortunately for DuPont, our win prior to Phoenix was not in a DuPont car either. It was in a National Guard car. So it’s been a lot longer than 66 races for them since they’ve gone to Victory Lane. So we would love to get them back to Victory Lane as well.”

AFTER PHOENIX YOU ATTACKED THE TRACK WITH THAT BACKHOE PIECE OF EQUIPMENT. DID YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO OPERATE IT?

“I can’t take any credit for it I kind of like that win; Alan Gustafson and that team deserve all the credit for that too, but I was pretty excited about getting the opportunity to go over there and tear into that race track. It was an impressive piece of machinery and it’s obviously a whole lot different than anything I’m used to. It was just two joy sticks and they gave me a quick little lesson. It’s pretty easy to get everything backyards but once you start playing around with it, it’s kind of like a video game. One way makes it go up and one way makes it scoop. So trying to get all those things together gives you a greater appreciation for what those guys do. Luckily I figured it out just enough to pull a big scoop of pavement and dirt and move it over and drop it on the ground. It was cool.”

    TALK ABOUT SPINNING IN PRACTICE

“We knew just from yesterday that the first few laps that the car can be a little edgy. It probably caught me a little bit by surprise as to how much that was because I just made about three-quarters of a lap getting up to speed and the car felt really good. We dove into Turn 3 and the car stuck good. So I got back into the gas and it didn’t stick so good off of (Turn) 4. I’m just glad to know I’ve still got a little luck in me. Those saves like that are typically don’t have anything to do with skill. They have everything to do with luck. The only thing I had to contribute was just locking it down and making sure that we didn’t tear it up any worse. When something like that happens, there’s no doubt that it takes a little bit longer for you to climb back up to the speed that you need because you don’t want to put yourself in that position again. We found ourselves really having to tighten the car up a lot. And we heard a lot of other people were doing that too. There seems to be a little more stagger in this tire for whatever reason this time about and I think it’s making the exit of the corners a lot looser. So we tightened up a ton and we were still too loose. We’ve been working around that. And switching over to qualifying trim, it took us a couple of runs to get a good feel for that. But I feel like that last run we made got us pretty close and we’ve got something a little bit more for them for qualifying.”

TALK ABOUT BEING ON THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO AND WHAT YOU THINK THAT DOES FOR THE SPORT OF NASCAR. DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR POPULARITY HAS INCREASED THIS WEEK?

“It’s so interesting to me how things have worked this week and how things have worked in my career. We had all these things scheduled and all these things planned way in advance. The folks from Sanofi Pasteur, which is a pharmaceutical company that me and my wife Ingrid do work with pertussis. They had scheduled me on (Jay) Leno weeks ago. And then we were planning, since we were in Phoenix, to try to hit some post-Oscar parties. Ingrid and I had joked in Daytona, because Valentine’s Day fell while were in Disney with the kids and there wasn’t a lot of romance around those couple of days because we were so tired when the day was over. So basically we said you know what? We’ll go out to L.A. and enjoy a couple of parties if we can get in and then we’ll have a couple of days to ourselves. And so we were really looking forward to that. Little did we know that all of that was going to get turned upside down by the win. And somebody just told me this today. It was my 83rd win and it was the 83th Academy Awards. I hadn’t thought about that. That was pretty cool. But the thing that really touched me was my friend John Lasseter with Pixar. I sent him a text when that race was over saying hey, I don’t know if you heard, but we won. At the time I had no idea where he was, but he was at the Oscars getting ready to get his own award. He didn’t know if he was going to win yet, but his category was coming up. And he was so excited. He sent me a text that he couldn’t be happier. He was like hurry up and get here; were going to celebrate and hopefully we’ll win the Oscar. So we got on the plane and flew there. As soon as we landed he sent me a text saying we just won, oh my gosh, this is going to be an amazing night, and can’t wait to see you guys. The whole night was just spectacular to be able to go into that room with that level of celebrity and power and Hollywood and everything. You’re just in awe of it. But then people come up to you and congratulate you. It was pretty cool. And the whole week was like that. And then going to do Leno, it was very, very cool. When I did the pre-interview for Leno, they’re like what’s a funny story? What’s been going on? We know you haven’t won. Boy, it would be great if you could win before you get here (laughter). And I was like nothing makes an interview go easier than when you win. It just made the week even that much more spectacular.”

DOES THE QUALIFYING ORDER SET BY PRACTICE CREATE A GREATER SENSE OF URGENCY DURING PRACTICE? “I prefer this way of doing it because I like how the track should be fairly consistent to what we had in practice. It is fresh on your mind about the last run that you made and the things that you feel like you are going to need to go faster. When you have to spend a whole night thinking about it and then the conditions are a little bit different when qualifying starts the next day, it can throw you off just a little bit. I prefer this. But, other than that, it is kind of business as usual. You go out there, you run your practice. Today we had to switch into qualifying trim and tomorrow we will go back into race trim. I think I like this schedule. Last week’s schedule to me was more throwing things off a bit and unique and different. I don’t know if I answered your question or not.”

DO YOU HAVE JUST GO OUT IN PRACTICE AND TAKE MORE CHANCES TO GO AS FAST AS YOU CAN?

“I am always trying to go as fast as I possibly can because you want to see how fast the car can go. You want to look at that board and see your name, your car, your car up there because you are fast. Well that is the lineup for qualifying or not. But I will say that there is probably a little bit of extra added because you don’t want to go out first. It is funny the last two weeks, totally different formats. And yet, we are around the same, maybe a little bit better today at 19th. Last week we were at like 26th so, we are thinking about it. But to me it is business as usual.”

HOW MUCH TIME DID YOU HAVE TO CELEBRATE PHOENIX BEFORE YOU HAD TO START THINKING ABOUT THIS PLACE? WAS THERE ANY PART DURING THAT WINLESS SKID WHERE YOU STARTED TO DOUBT YOURSELF?

“We do a de-brief every Tuesday. I do one in the morning with Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) and his engineers and then we do one with all of our drivers and crew chiefs at Hendrick Motorsports later in the afternoon. I did all of those things in and around the other things I was doing so in my opinion we were thinking about Las Vegas on Tuesday. I am going to enjoy that win for a long time. I mean, yes, I come here and spin the first lap and that definitely brings you a little bit back down to reality but that is not going to make how special that win was go away any time soon.

“There is no doubt that when you go that length of time without winning, you question a lot of things, you know. Is it me? Is it the car? What is it? Is it a combination? I don’t care who you are, how many races you’ve won, you question those things. But, because of the races that I’ve won and being at Hendrick Motorsports, knowing that the equipment is there, the resources are there, all those things help me tell myself any time we go through that is that I can’t change how I drive the car. I can’t change who I am, I just have to continue to give the best feedback and information that I possibly can. If there is something that I can think about that I could do a better job of…like if my physical fitness…if I felt like that was off and I was being worn down at the end of the race, if it was something like that, then that is something that I have to work on and get better at. But I feel like these last two years I have put in more effort than I ever have. I think that is the way it works. When you are on top, you can get away with a lot of things. But when you’re not, you have got to put in that extra effort because everybody around you is. When you put in that extra effort and it doesn’t pay off, it is very frustrating. But there is no doubt that frustration sank in a little bit. A little bit of doubt. It is amazing how that one win can bring that right back to say ok, I didn’t do anything different on Sunday. It is funny, people said I was on a mission, that is the Jeff Gordon we haven’t seen in a while. No. that car was awesome. When you have a car and you step on the gas and it leaps up off the corner and you close the gap on a guy by one or two car lengths, that’s…yea, I’m on a mission because the thing should win. (LAUGHS). When we had that car, like we had that car here a year ago, and we took the two tires. We had that car at Texas and got caught up the wreck. We’ve had those cars but it just didn’t all fall into place. I didn’t do anything on Sunday than I have in the past.”

WAS PRE-INTERVIEW WITH LENO BEFORE YOU WON? “It was before Daytona.”

I KNOW YOU DON’T FORGET WHAT ITS LIKE TO WIN, BUT WAS THERE ANYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE LAST WEEK THAT REALLY MADE YOU SAVOR THAT WIN?

“Even the memories that I have of some of the last wins don’t compare to that crowd reaction. That crowd reaction, it sent chills up my spine. That was unbelievable. I don’t quite understand it to be honest with you, maybe a little bit of a sympathy vote or over these last couple years, I have earned a little bit more respect maybe because I have gone through some tough times. But, to me, when we won a bunch of races, maybe go back to ’07, it was like ok Jeff Gordon won again and my fans were like “Yes.” But after that Phoenix race was over, everybody was standing up cheering. That was just the coolest thing that I experienced. I love that. That was awesome. Everybody that was there, I thank them so much for giving me that feeling and that experience after that win.”

RYAN NEWNAN, NO. 39 HAAS AUTOMATION CHEVROLET, met with members of the media at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and discussed the start to his season, the amount of crashes so far this season and other topics. Full transcript:

TALK ABOUT THE START OF YOUR SEASON: “It is the best two-race start to the season since my Daytona 500 victory in 2008. This just really proud to get started better. I think we have done a good job so far of carrying a good run in the last 10 races of last season into the off season and turning that into a good start to the season. That isn’t easy to do. Maybe Carl Edwards is doing it just a little bit better than us. Ultimately it has been a lot of fun to start. We led the most laps at Daytona which was a great feat for us as a team. I think it was the first time for me at a restrictor plate track and the first time for me at Stewart-Haas as far as leading the most laps I think. A good solid top-five finish at Phoenix. That is three top-fives in a row at that race track. Just proud of the effort the guys have put in during the off season and all the sponsors for giving us the opportunity to come back and do what we love.”

IS THIS THE FIRST TEST FOR THE NEW NOSE? “I honestly haven’t noticed any difference in the way the car drives aerodynamically or physically as far as hitting the race track with the new nose compared to the old nose. This new nose is supposed to be more rigid but in saying that, I wouldn’t have known any difference whatsoever and I don’t know many drivers that I have talked to would say anything any different.”

IS ALL THE EARLY AGGRESSION AND CRASHES A TREND GOING? “It is like you know that there is going to be like 185,000 people leaving the race track on Sunday but we are all going to try to get to the airport first. We know there is going to be traffic but we still try to do it fast. We honk our horns, we cut people off, it is just the way it is. Honestly, I don’t what happened. I don’t know if it was having Saturday just qualifying and more time to think about the race. I honestly think that what happened was NASCAR announcing the mandatory caution at 40 laps changed the strategy for some teams and we saw some guys that didn’t pit and stayed out and guys that were running up front were in turn running 15th and were trying to get everything back in the first couple of laps. It felt like green-white-checkered restarts at Martinsville or Richmond or Daytona for that matter sometimes every restart we had there at Phoenix for the first five or six. It was literally crazy. I don’t know how we didn’t have more crashes than what we did. I mean, the big crash that happened was because the tailpipes cut down the tire which was a freak of instance I guess you could say. It was chaotic was the best word you could use to describe the racing for the first 65 laps.

“Honestly I don’t know if it was because of that competition caution and the way things played out then maybe it will be different. I don’t know. I hope we all kind of learned from the chaoticness, which I think is a word; I tried to use it in Scrabble on the way here-chaoticness. I think that.I know we can do a better job than we did there. I don’t know if we all will hold up to our potential.”

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON MARTINSVILLE? “I like it. I don’t know why it is being the biggest guy in the garage, I’ve never had one of those hotdogs before. (LAUGHS) I like the racing. I like the fact that you have to really modulate that third pedal that we don’t typically use as much, which I think makes it an exciting race for us drivers. The history of the sport, just going back to the days of the modifieds. Bobby (Hutchens, Stewart-Haas competition director) has shared some stories with me of his dad racing there in a modififed and getting up on the fence and climbing the walls, stuff like that. It is the kind of racing that we still do that is where we all came from. Whether it was stock cars or modifieds or open wheel cars, the short track, hard on the brakes, small tight half-mile racing I think 95% of the people in the garage still appreciate.”

PAUL MENARD, NO. 27 MOEN-MENARD CHEVROLET, met with members of the media at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and discussed the start to his season and being the new guy at RCR . Full transcript:

TALK ABOUT THE START TO YOUR SEASON: “We’ve had a good start to the season. Daytona went really well for us. We came out of there with a ninth place finish and we were disappointed with that. We had a really fast car down there. Phoenix we had a good car again. Got some damage early in the race. Go the toe knocked out, had some tire wear issues from there on, that hurt us at the end of the day. Just proud of the way a brand new race team is coming together. They build me really nice looking, beautiful race cars. They are fast. We have awesome horsepower. Just looking forward to get the ball rolling here with the season. We are at a totally different type of race track here in Vegas. So far, so good. Looking forward to qualifying. I think we’ll have a good starting spot and we’ll work on race trim tomorrow and see what we’ve got.”

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON CALIFORNIA? “I am not really sure whether I like it or not honestly. The races tend to get really strung out, a lot of green flag racing, which is fine for us, but the fans probably don’t like that as much. We have long runs we can kind of analyze our car and we can make adjustments to it and make it go faster obviously. That part of it is really neat. It is kind of disappointing that nobody shows up for the race, you know? It is a huge market. It is a beautiful race track. They promote it well it seems like. It is hard to get people in the grandstands which is unfortunate. Hopefully, cutting back a race will really help that. The race itself. Yes, it is pretty fun.”

TALK ABOUT BEING AT RCR AND THE BENEFITS: “There are a lot of familiar faces up there first off. A lot of people from DEI (Dale Earnhardt, Inc.) are there now. Just walking through the shop I see a lot of people I’ve known the last few years which is really cool and helps with the learning process and all that. The race cars are very light. They do a really good job with the fit and finish of them. The welds are beautiful. If you just look at the race cars, you can tell they are nicely built. Slugger (Richard Labbe, crew chief) coming over is a huge deal obviously. He has assembled a group of a couple of guys that were with me last year and a lot of guys that he has worked with in the past and people that he is familiar with. It is a really good group of guys. So far this year we’ve gone out to dinner at some point every weekend and everybody just gets along really well and it is cool to see.”

ARE THE CRASHES WE ARE SEEING A TREND OR IS IT TIRES OR WHATEVER? “There definitely seems to be a sense of urgency when the green flag drops. I don’t know if it is double-file restart or what, but even from last year and especially the year before last, it doesn’t seem like it was that way. Now the last couple of years it has amped up a lot. Probably because of the double-file restarts, you can gain a lot on those restarts if you play it right and people are just trying to get all they can. Look the practice times and how close everybody is. If you can gain two spots on a restart that goes a long ways. But there does seem to be a big sense of urgency and people are racing really hard and really early and I think it is just the nature of the beast. The cars are so competitive, so close together. Just trying to get all they can.”

YOU ARE AHEAD OF ALL YOUR RCR TEAMMATES IN POINTS, HAVE THEY JOKED WITH YOU ABOUT BEING THE NEW GUY? “Everybody has been good to work with from all four crew chiefs working well together to all four of us drivers working well together. We’re quickest in this practice, of our group and we had a lot of different colored shirts up in the hauler kind of asking tire pressures and what we were doing with springs and stuff. It is neat to have people ask you for help too. Being the new team, being the new guys on the block, it is cool that they respect us and want to learn some things. Obviously we go right back to them with questions we have for them. Some things that worked for us last year aren’t going to work this year and we are going to have to learn these new cars. It is a totally different chassis and just trying to work through some things. We struggled a little bit this first practice trying to do somethings we did last year and it hasn’t worked the same. We are learning these cars as we go. I’ve been really well received in the whole group and that’s neat for me personally and professionally. Same with Slugger, he fits right in with Gil (Martin, No. 29 crew chief) and Todd (Berrier, No. 31 crew chief) and Shane (Wilson, No. 33 crew chief) there, so it has been really good.”
