Erik Jones and the Erik Jones Foundation Kick-off Skin Cancer & Melanoma Awareness Month at Kansas Speedway

Charlotte, NC (May 1, 2024) – Erik Jones and the Erik Jones Foundation (EJF) will kick off Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month this weekend at Kansas Speedway and continue to educate fans throughout the month of May, concluding the month-long campaign at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Established in 2021, the Erik Jones Foundation has three main pillars, one of which is early cancer detection and care. Jones has a personal connection to Melanoma after losing his father to the disease in June 2016. He made Melanoma a specific focus and developed a relationship with the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) after learning about the organization and its emphasis on prevention, awareness, diagnosis, and treatment. More recently, EJF has added additional partnerships to expand its programming to engage with individuals and directly encourage early detection and care.

This weekend at Kansas Speedway, the Erik Jones Foundation will be onsite with partners The Sun Bus, AdventHealth and Castle Bioscience to provide race fans with free skin cancer checks, educational materials and sunscreen samples. The Sun Bus will be open in the Kansas Speedway Fan Zone both Saturday and Sunday. Fans can sign up online for the free skin screenings or stop by The Sun Bus to sign up and meet with physicians and clinicians to learn about melanoma.

“I’m really proud of the work that we have been able to do with our foundation over the last few years in skin cancer,” said Jones. “We started as simply providing materials and sunscreen to fans at the racetrack, and through the relationships with our partners like MRF, The Sun Bus and AdventHealth, we are now able to take it a step further and provide skin checks at the track and help fans who may not have gone to have a check up on their own.”

Following the Kansas Speedway weekend, the Erik Jones Foundation will continue to educate fans about the importance of skin checks and early detection throughout the month of May through social media posts. The Foundation will conclude the month at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where EJF is partnering with LEGACY MOTOR CLUB sponsor Dollar Tree and Family Dollar and its supplier Edgewell Personal Care to hand out sunscreen samples and sun safety materials to fans enjoying the Memorial Day race weekend.

“Our melanoma efforts are significant to us. First, because they honor Erik’s late father, but maybe more importantly, because we know they are working,” said Brent Nickola, Erik Jones Foundation’s Executive Director. “Last November, we conducted nearly 250 cancer screenings at Phoenix Raceway and identified dozens of cases of suspected skin cancer. In the month that followed the event, we received messages from fans who were grateful because we helped find their cancer before it was too late. I am confident we are saving lives with this program.”

    Notes of Interest

    ● Josh Berry will tackle Kansas Speedway in Kansas City for the second time in his NASCAR Cup Series career this weekend as the field heads to the 1.5-mile oval for Sunday’s AdventHealth 400. Berry’s first Kansas start in the Cup Series came last May with Hendrick Motorsports, filling in for an injured Alex Bowman for the second of three races. In that event, Berry started 29th and finished 25th.

    ● Berry took on the Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway concrete mile oval last Sunday for the third time in his Cup Series career. He qualified a career-best 12th and finished 14th and will arrive at Kansas second in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings, 13 points behind leader Carson Hocevar. Berry is 24th in the overall Cup Series standings.

    ● In his three NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at Kansas, the 33-year-old driver has a pair of top-10s in his most recent two starts with JR Motorsports. He started 10th and finished seventh in the September 2022 race and started sixth and finished in the same position last September. Berry has finished inside the top-10 in five of the six stages run in those two races.

    ● Crew chief Rodney Childers will call the shots atop the pit box at Kansas for the 32nd time in his Cup Series career Sunday. In his previous 31 starts as a crew chief, Childers’ drivers have earned four pole positions, two wins (both with former No. 4 driver Kevin Harvick in 2016 and 2018), 10 top-five finishes, 15 to-10s, and have led 729 laps at the track. His drivers have an average starting position of 10.9 and an average finish of 13.9 with just two DNFs. In Childers’ most recent appearances at Kansas, Harvick drove to 11th-place results in last year’s May and September races.

    ● Overstock.com adorns Berry’s No. 4 Ford Mustang at Kansas. The partnership amplifies the recent relaunch of Overstock.com, home of crazy good deals that offer quality and style for less. Overstock.com is for the savvy shopper who loves the thrill of the hunt and it includes product categories customers know and love, like patio furniture, home furniture and area rugs, while reintroducing jewelry, watches and health-and-beauty products.

Josh Berry, Driver of the No. 4 Overstock.com Ford Mustang Dark Horse

Kansas is a 1.5-mile track with multiple groves and a lot of opportunity to create speed. How beneficial is it to be able to change lanes and work your way through the field at 1.5-mile tracks when passing has been a challenge in the NextGen car?

“I think having those lane options helps the most when trying to find clean air. The NextGen car is really good in clean air, so being able to move around to find it will give the drivers the chance to race harder and make passes regardless of lane choice. I am looking forward to being able to be aggressive when I need to in order to gain track position.”

You had double-duty in last year’s May weekend at Kansas. How will just having to focus on the Cup Series race this weekend help you?

“I think in the back of my mind, it will be a little easier not having to think about the differences between the NextGen car and the Xfinity car. Ultimately how I prepare for each weekend is still the same – I have my process to get me comfortable and ready each week and that doesn’t change if I am running two races or just the Cup race like I am this weekend. The goal is always to go out there and maximize the day and try to compete for a win, and that is the same anytime I get behind the wheel of a racecar.”

Is there a track you’ve raced on in the Cup Series that is similar to how Kansas races? If so, what can you apply this weekend?

“I think Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway are most similar to how this weekend will be, as far as mile-and-a-halves go, but this one is unique just because of the lane options we get this weekend. Stewart-Haas Racing has had speed at those intermediate tracks and we are still working hard to learn and build our notebook at those tracks, so this weekend will be another chance for me to learn a lot and keep building on what I have already learned this season.”

What are the characteristics of a fast Ford Mustang Dark Horse that will help you be successful this weekend?

“For us on the No. 4 team, we really want to make sure the car has rear grip and stability across the whole run. Obviously, that changes from track to track as far as what we think we need, but when we work in the simulator and look at our data, our focus is on those two characteristics. All of us on the No. 4 team feel like if we can find that and hone in on that, we will have a competitive car that is capable of running up front.”

Justin Haley, Driver of the No. 51 Children’s Mercy Kansas City Ford Mustang Dark Horse

    ● Justin Haley, driver of the No. 51 Children’s Mercy Kansas City Ford Mustang Dark Horse for Rick Ware Racing (RWR), heads to Kansas Speedway in Kansas City for the first of two visits by the NASCAR Cup Series this season to the Heartland of America. Haley will make his seventh start at the 1.5-mile oval Sunday and looks to better his career-best Kansas finish of 18th, earned last May.

    ● While Haley his still looking for a top finish in the Cup Series at Kansas, the opposite is true of his time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. In four Xfnity Series starts at the track, he’s finished no worse than seventh, including back-to-back fourth-place finishes in his most recent starts in 2020 and 2021.

    ● He also has top-10 finishes in both of his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series starts at Kansas – ninth in 2017 and 10th in 2018 – and a sixth-place finish in his lone start there in the ARCA Menards Series.

    ● The Winamac, Indiana, native celebrated his 25th birthday last weekend at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway with his fifth top-25 finish of the year for RWR and second in the last three races.

    ● #HaleYES, there’s another video! The campaign rolls on as Haley sets off to save the puppies in his NASCAR Crocs – loaded down with Jibbitz.

Riley Herbst, Driver of the No. 15 Monster Energy Zero Sugar Ford Mustang Dark Horse

    ● Riley Herbst is back behind the wheel of the No. 15 Monster Energy Zero Sugar Ford Mustang Dark Horse for RWR for his first non-superspeedway Cup Series start.

    ● While the NASCAR Xfinity Series is on hiatus this weekend, the fulltime driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing will try his hand at an intermediate track in the NextGen car. The Las Vegas native has five Xfinity Series starts at Kansas with a best finish of ninth earned in July 2020. He also competed in two NASCAR CraftsmanTruck Series races, posting finishes of ninth in 2019 and 12th in 2022.

    ● In four ARCA Menards Series races at the 1.5-mile track, Herbst has two top-five finishes and three top-10s. He started from the pole in the July 2020 race and led 18 laps en route to a third-place result.

    ● Through the season’s first 10 Xfinity Series races, Herbst is sixth in the standings and has claimed two top-fives and three top-10s, including a fifth-place finish in March at his hometown Las Vegas Motor Speedway – the same 1.5-mile track where he earned his career-first victory last fall.

    ● Monster Energy Zero Sugar will adorn Herbst’s No. 15 Ford Mustang at Kansas. Based in Corona, California, Monster Energy is the leading marketer of energy drinks and alternative beverages. Refusing to acknowledge the traditional, the company supports the scene and sport. Monster Energy is a brand that believes in authenticity and the core of what its sports partnerships, athletes and musicians represent. More than a drink, it’s the way of life lived by athletes, sports, bands, believers and fans.

    Rick Ware Racing Notes

    ● The Progressive American Flat Track (AFT) tour heads to Silver Dollar Short Track in Chico, California, for the inaugural Grand National Championship. AFT Singles rider Kody Kopp picked up a second-place result last weekend at the Texas Half-Mile in Fort Worth, his fourth podium finish in the first four events.

    ● Last weekend, NHRA Top Fuel driver Clay Millican competed in the Mission Foods NHRA Drag Racing Series 4-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, North Carolina. He set a new team speed record in the first round of eliminations and advanced to the final round, where he finished second while topping the team record once again.

    ● Rick Ware has been a motorsports mainstay for more than 40 years. It began at age six when the third-generation racer began his driving career and has since spanned four wheels and two wheels on both asphalt and dirt. Competing in the SCCA Trans Am Series and other road-racing divisions led Ware to NASCAR in the early 1980s, where he finished third in his NASCAR debut – the 1983 Warner W. Hodgdon 300 NASCAR Grand American race at Riverside (Calif.) International Raceway. More than a decade later, injuries would force Ware out of the driver seat and into fulltime team ownership. In 1995, Rick Ware Racing was formed, and with wife Lisa by his side, Ware has since built his eponymous organization into an entity that fields two fulltime entries in the NASCAR Cup Series while simultaneously campaigning successful teams in the Top Fuel class of the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, the LMP3 class of the IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge, Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup, Progressive American Flat Track and FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX), where RWR won the 2022 SX2 championship with rider Shane McElrath.

    Justin Haley, Driver Q&A

The Cup Series has a full slate of intermediate tracks coming up and there’s been steady improvement from RWR over the last month. How does that impact your outlook, not just for this weekend but for the next several weeks?

“I felt like we had a really good race at Dover, where we finally started to put the pieces together, like we’ve been talking about since Daytona. I think everyone had work to do with the track being so different from Saturday, and it took us a while to get there, but a 23rd-place finish was something that I left the track feeling good about. The few intermediate races we had earlier this year weren’t great by any means, but I think we did make improvement from Vegas to Texas and I do think that can continue. We’re all working with a lot of patience to get where we want to be and I feel good about where we are headed.”

What makes Kansas different from Las Vegas, Texas and the other intermediate-style tracks you visit?

“Each track kind of has its own characteristics. Like, Texas is a really rough track and Kansas just isn’t. No dips in the track, just a very smooth surface. You’ll probably see everyone running up high, so there’s always a chance you get just a little too close and get into the wall, but we’ll see a lot of single-file racing and I would think passing will be hard to do. So, most of the issues would probably come from people trying to pass and just not being able to make it work, especially if your car isn’t handling perfectly.”

    Riley Herbst, Driver Q&A

Kansas will mark your first intermediate start in the NASCAR Cup Series after five superspeedway starts. What are you hoping to learn at a different style of track after some strong runs in your previous starts?

“Honestly, it’s good to get these starts at different styles of racetracks in order to prepare yourself for any type of racing, if and when you move up to the Cup Series. I think it gives you more experience to learn how to navigate different tracks in this car. Obviously, we’ve had some strong runs in my past starts and I’m hoping to see the same this weekend. Kansas is all about learning, though. I want to be able to learn how to navigate an intermediate track in a NextGen car to make myself a better driver overall. When you’re at this stage in your career, it’s all about gaining that knowledge and experience to help yourself in the long run. I’m thankful to Rick Ware Racing and Monster Energy for this opportunity.”

You’ve had strong runs at Kansas in the past in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Talk about your experience at the 1.5-mile oval.

“Kansas has been good to me in the past, for sure. But the Trucks and Xfinity cars are so different from the NextGen cars. Even though I’ve had strong runs, I’ve still found myself in some trouble just because of how the races play out. With it being an Xfinity off weekend, I’m excited to still get a chance to be racing and get the extra experience. When the Xfinity Series shows up here in the fall, it’ll be time to go playoff racing. We’re doing everything we can to make sure we’re part of that this year, so any track time is good to prepare for that. I’m hoping to take the opportunity to learn as much as I can for the future.”

    KICKING-OFF MAY IN THE MIDWEST

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) will take its turn to contest in a doubleheader weekend with the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) as both series will make their way to Kansas Speedway for the series’ first trip to the Midwest this season. The 1.5-mile Kansas oval will again hold two race weekends for the NCS and NCTS this season, with the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) joining in on the action as all three series will return to the track in September for a postseason tripleheader.

    Chevrolet at Kansas Speedway

Chevrolet leads the NASCAR Cup Series in all-time victories at Kansas Speedway – owning victories in 13 of the series’ 36 events at the 1.5-mile track. The first of those victories came in the series’ debut at the track with NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon – marking his first of three career Kansas triumphs. Hendrick Motorsports is tied for the top spot as the winningest organization in series’ history at Kansas Speedway with eight triumphs – most recently with Kyle Larson in Oct. 2021 en route to his first championship title.

Chevrolet also earned the inaugural NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory at Kansas Speedway with a win courtesy of Ricky Hendrick. In 27 NCTS races at the 1.5-mile track, Chevrolet has earned 10 victories – two of which came last season when Team Chevy’s Grant Enfinger and Christian Eckes drove the manufacturer to a sweep of the victories. A Chevrolet win in Saturday’s Heart of America 200 would tie Toyota for the series’ all-time win record at Kansas Speedway.

    TWO-FOR-TWO

The NASCAR Cup Series has contested on two non-drafting 1.5-mile tracks thus far this season – both ending with a Chevrolet-powered machine in victory lane.

The first of those victories came in March at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with Kyle Larson and the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Camaro ZL1 team. The victory came in near-dominating fashion by the 2021 series’ champion. Following a second-place qualifying effort, Larson went on to sweep both stage wins and lead a race-high 181 of 267 laps en route to the victory.

Chase Elliott kept Chevrolet and Hendrick Motorsports undefeated at 1.5-mile tracks this season with a victory at Texas Motor Speedway three weeks ago. The 28-year-old Dawsonville, Georgia, native drove his No. 9 Camaro ZL1 to top-10 finishes in both stages – outlasting a handful of late-race cautions to take the checkered-flag and snap a 42-race winless streak.

Next Gen Numbers on 1.5-Mile Tracks

Heading to the heartland for this weekend’s event, Chevrolet owns a winning percentage of 50 percent on non-drafting 1.5-mile tracks in the Next Gen era with eight victories in 16 races. Three of those victories were accompanied by a podium sweep by Team Chevy drivers – twice at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Mar. 2022 and Mar. 2023), as well as a one-two-three-four finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Oct. 2022.

Chevrolet’s Next Gen Wins on Non-Drafting 1.5-Mile Tracks:

    · Las Vegas Motor Speedway – Alex Bowman (Mar. 6, 2022)

    · Texas Motor Speedway – Tyler Reddick (Sept. 25, 2022)

    · Homestead-Miami Speedway – Kyle Larson (Oct. 23, 2022)

    · Las Vegas Motor Speedway – William Byron (Mar. 5, 2023)

    · Texas Motor Speedway – William Byron (Sept. 24, 2023)

    · Las Vegas Motor Speedway – Kyle Larson (Oct. 15, 2023)

    · Las Vegas Motor Speedway – Kyle Larson (Mar. 3, 2024)

    · Texas Motor Speedway – Chase Elliott (Apr. 14, 2024)

    CARRYING MOMENTUM IN THE NCTS

Coming off a two-week break, Chevrolet drivers and teams in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will return to competition this weekend for five-straight weeks of racing. The Bowtie brand is carrying the momentum of a near dominant season as the series nears the halfway point of its regular-season. With seven races complete, four different Team Chevy drivers have earned a combined six wins. In addition, the manufacturer has tallied a series-leading five pole wins – each recorded by a different Team Chevy driver – and accumulated 11 of 14 stage wins thus far this season. Among each of those victories, Chevrolet claimed at least 50 percent of the top-10 finishing positions, including a season-high seven top-10s on two different occasions (Daytona International Speedway and Martinsville Speedway).

Christian Eckes – the series’ most recent winner at Kansas Speedway – heads into the weekend atop the driver’s points standings with a two-point advantage over second-place Corey Heim. The 23-year-old New York native continues to be the only full-time NCTS contender that is a multi-time winner this season with two victories to his name. In the series’ two appearances on non-drafting 1.5-mile tracks this season, Eckes has driven his No. 19 McAnally-Hilgemann Racing Silverado RST to a pair of top-10 finishes including a sixth-place finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and a fourth-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway.

Looking Back at a Kansas Sweep

Team Chevy’s Grant Enfinger and Christian Eckes powered the Silverado RST to a sweep of the NCTS races at Kansas Speedway last season. Enfinger is the defending winner of the track’s spring date – with the triumph earning his playoff berth that ultimately led to a runner-up finish in the series’ final points standings. Returning to the 1.5-mile Kansas oval for the series’ Playoffs Round of 10 elimination race, Eckes took the lead on the final restart – leading just the final two circuits to steal the victory. Efinger and Eckes are two of just three former NCTS winners at Kansas Speedway entered for Saturday’s event.

    BOWTIE BULLETS:

    · With 28 races complete across NASCAR’s three national series this season, Chevrolet has a winning percentage of 60.7% with 17 victories (NASCAR Cup Series – six wins; NASCAR Xfinity Series – five wins; NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series – six wins).

    · Active Chevrolet drivers with a NASCAR Cup Series win at Kansas Speedway:

    Kyle Busch – two wins (2021, 2016)

Kyle Larson – one win (2021)

Chase Elliott – one win (2018)

    · In 36 NASCAR Cup Series races at Kansas Speedway, Chevrolet leads all manufacturers with 13 victories and 13 poles.

    · Chevrolet won the inaugural race at Kansas Speedway in both the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, courtesy of Jeff Gordon (NCS – Sept. 2001) and Ricky Hendrick (NCTS – July 2001).

    · In four NASCAR Cup Series races this season, Chevrolet has earned at least 50 percent of the top-10 finishing results – three of which have come in the series’ past three events (Texas Motor Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Dover Motor Speedway). In each of those events, at least three different Chevrolet organizations were represented in the top-10.

    · Team Chevy’s William Byron is the only driver to have a double-digit win record in the NASCAR Cup Series’ Next Gen era – with his victory at Martinsville Speedway marking his 11th all-time victory in the Next Gen Camaro ZL1.

    · In 83 points-paying races in the Next Gen era, Chevrolet leads all manufacturers with 43 victories – a winning percentage of 51.8%.

    · With its 42 NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer Championships, 33 NASCAR Cup Series Driver Championships, and 857 all-time NASCAR Cup Series wins, Chevrolet continues to hold the title as the winningest brand in NASCAR Cup Series history.

    QUOTABLE QUOTES:

ROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 1 Busch Light CROCS CAMARO ZL1

What is racing at like at Kansas?

“Kansas was built like other mile-and-a-half tracks but it doesn’t race like them. It has progressive banking where it gets steeper the further up the track you go up closer to the wall. The winters in Kansas can be tough so that has a big bearing on how the track ages each year. I’ve only raced on the current pavement. I went there the first year of the current pavement in the Truck Series. I’ve gotten to progress with the asphalt there as it ages from super good stuff to where you wanted to stay in the rubber and now you’re looking to get away from the rubber. Now, you want to drive anywhere but where the vehicle in front of you is or where most cars aren’t running. I love the Kansas track. Sometimes I feel like I have to hang on to something so the wind doesn’t blow me away, and sometimes you feel like you’re going to get shoved in the wall because the wind gusts are so strong.”

What are restarts like at Kansas?

“Restarts at Kansas are wild. We have to stay above the white line until the start/finish line and then you can bail to the bottom. Going back to racing in the truck series, I’ve made plenty of three-wide going to the bottom to get position on guys. I’ve ripped the top, getting a run drafting in turn 1 and pulling out and being able to run wide open up there and get to the right rear quarter panel and get the pass done. Most vehicles you’re a lot of throttle all of the way to turn 3 on the restart.”

COREY LAJOIE, NO. 7 GAINBRIDGE CAMARO ZL1

You had a decent run last Sunday at Dover and Spire Motorsports’ intermediate-track package has been trending in the right direction. It feels like the team is making some gains as we head for Kansas Speedway.

“We’re headed to Kansas this weekend looking to make some more positive gains with our Gainbridge Chevrolet. Kansas Speedway has become one of my favorite mile-and-a-halves so this weekend is another great opportunity to create some positive momentum.”

KYLE BUSCH, NO. 8 CHEDDAR’S SCRATCH KITCHEN CAMARO ZL1

You ran well in the spring race last year at Kansas. How did that affect your performance in the fall event where you scored a seventh-place finish?

“We had a really good car in the spring race at Kansas last year. I felt like we were a top three car for sure and to be able to bring that same speed back the second time to Kansas was really helpful. I think we learned a lot the first race we had there last year.”

What is so challenging about Turn 2 at Kansas? There have been eight cautions at that end of the track over the last three races.

“Kansas is tough all around and a lot of it has to do with the wind. The wind can really play havoc on the car’s handling by which direction it’s blowing. I would say that you are trying to maximize your speed at all areas of the track and sometimes when you’re running high against the wall you overstep those bounds and you get in trouble.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1

Bowman on racing at Kansas Speedway:

“Kansas (Speedway) was one of the first intermediate tracks I got to race at way back in ARCA. I got a lot of laps there and for whatever reason have been pretty naturally successful there (Kansas Speedway) right off the bat, even in the (NASCAR) Cup (Series) car. Obviously we haven’t won there- but we’ve had a lot of good days there. I’m looking forward to getting back to Kansas (Speedway). It’s a fun racetrack that I enjoy going to.”

BLAKE HARRIS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1

Harris on racing at Kansas Speedway:

“I think our team has had some good intermediate runs this year. Our No. 48 Ally Racing team has carried mostly good momentum the past couple of months and we don’t really expect anything different this weekend in Kansas. I’d say Kansas (Speedway) is easily one of Alex (Bowman)’s top five (performing) tracks. I know he really enjoys going there (Kansas Speedway) and has had some good runs and led some laps. We expect to go compete in the top five this weekend and aim for a shot to win.”

ZANE SMITH, NO. 71 FOCUSED HEALTH CAMARO ZL1

Your primary sponsor, Focused Health, is debuting a new paint scheme this weekend. What are your thoughts on the scheme?

“I’m pumped for this new paint scheme. When I first saw the renderings, I wanted to run it as soon as possible. It is a scheme that will stand out and everyone will be able to spot easily on the track. I think a new, bright design like this is significant as we progress through the rest of the season. I’m thankful for Focused Health’s support for me and this No.71 team. I am excited to get to Kansas and show it off. Hopefully we will be at the front of the field, and everyone will see it.”

CARSON HOCEVAR, NO. 77 DELAWARE LIFE/CREATIVE ONE CAMARO ZL1

Kansas is a track you’ve raced at plenty of times in your career. How are you feeling this week headed back there, this time racing full time in the Cup series for Spire Motorsports?

“I really like Kansas and it’s a lot of fun running around the top of the racetrack. Another mile-and-a-half, which seems to be our strong suit. I’m looking forward to racing somewhere where you can move around and try different racing grooves. It’s shaping up to be a good weekend with the 77 team.”

DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 CHOICE PRIVILEGES CAMARO ZL1

What do think about racing at Kansas?

“Kansas is going to be fun. It’s a mile-and-a-half track that produces great racing because you have the option of going to the bottom or going to the top. It’s a mile-and-a-half but it feels smaller because you can run everywhere.

Our mile-and-a-half program has been pretty good this season. I think that will show this weekend.”

BAYLEY CURREY, NO. 41 AUTOVENTIVE/PRECISION SILVERADO RST

With three intermediate tracks in a row, how important is it to string together a solid opening race in Kansas?

“I think obviously it’s super important. We’re probably going to turn this truck around to race somewhere soon, whether that be in Darlington or Charlotte. So, being able to start off with momentum and build some confidence heading into this string of races will be important. I feel like we’ve had speed at the other mile-and-a-half tracks with our No. 41 Chevy, so I don’t see anything different here.”

MATT MILLS, NO. 42 J.F. ELECTIC/UTILITRA SILVERADO RST

You’ve had experience in several types of vehicles at this track before, so what are some of the characteristics that make Kansas fun to race on?

“I think it’s fun because of the fact that it’s got a lot of grip. You can move around throughout the whole race depending on what your car or truck is doing. Obviously, ripping around the fence is the biggest thrill for us drivers if everything’s working right. Going there in a truck is a little bit more risky to get close to the wall, so hopefully we’ll have a good enough truck to be able to move around and make time so we can race a little more than some of the other mile-and-a-half tracks.”

KADEN HONEYCUTT, NO. 45 NIECE PRODUCTS OF KANSAS SILVERADO RST

What are some of the most important driving techniques that you’ve been able to pick up while racing on a mile-and-a-half track compared to the short tracks that you’re accustomed to?

“I feel like one of the biggest things I’ve learned is getting used to the dirty air. You have to run opposite lanes and make stuff work, while sure you’re not directly behind someone entering the corner. I feel like Kansas is really good for two-lane racing, especially the bottom was good last year. It changes so much, but that was one of the biggest things was making sure I’m out of line from the truck in front. On the restarts, you need to be in the lane to move to the front on either the top or the bottom lane, whichever is moving forward. You’re just having to constantly search for the air that’s making ground up.”

Gilliland, gener8tor Honor Historic 2015 CARS Tour Win

Win at Southern National Motorsports Park Was First of Gilliand’s Career

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 1, 2024) – Todd Gilliland is going back to his roots for the May 12th NASCAR Cup Series Throwback race at Darlington Raceway. Gilliand’s No. 38 gener8tor Ford Mustang Dark Horse, honors the car Gilliand won in the inaugural CARS Tour Late Model Stock Tour race at Southern National Motorsports Park in Kenly, North Carolina March 28, 2015.

“It’s really cool, definitely a lot of hard work and sweat had gone into this car,” Gilliland said. “I was just a 14-year-old kid trying to get experience with the dream to race in the Cup Series and taking it step-by-step. This car makes me think about all the memories made along the way and my journey to Cup and to even race at Darlington for throwback weekend.”

The then 14-year-old, drove the number 98G Core Power / Country Chevrolet Ford machine to victory, racing for his father, former Cup Series and Front Row Motorsports driver, David Gilliland and David Gilliland Racing. The Cup Series scheme will carry the iconic red “G” next to Gilliland’s No. 38.

“It’s incredible to see this scheme on Todd’s car going to Darlington for the throwback weekend,” David said. “It was a super special car back then when we raced and it was only a dream then for him to race in the Cup Series. Now to watch him race in the Cup Series with this scheme when we were just dreaming about him making it to this level is super special. I can’t wait to be there to take a picture next to it and watch it hit the track.”

Todd only led three laps in the 150-lap event, passing Deac McCaskill for his first ever CARS Tour win. Gilliand would go on to race seven more times in that 2015 season, garnering two more top-5s and three top-10s. Gilliand would then go on to compete in the ARCA Menards Series and K&N West championship.

Gilliand will be competing in the Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway, May 12. The race will be televised at 3:00 p.m. ET on FS1.

Points standings beginning to tighten … The Cup Series points standings once again altered following Sunday’s race in Dover. With his third top-five of the season, Martin Truex Jr. remains the lead Toyota Camry XSE, currently second in the standings and only 15 points behind first. Claiming his third win of the season, Denny Hamlin jumped two spots in the standings to fourth, also holding the most Playoff points of any driver with 17. The two are joined by Tyler Reddick (fifth) and Ty Gibbs (eighth) inside the top 10 of the point standings.

Toyota aims to continue Kansas dominance … Kansas Speedway has been a haven of success for Toyota over the last few seasons, where Camrys have been victorious in the last four Kansas races and five of the last six. Hamlin and Reddick provided a Kansas sweep for Toyota in 2023. The nine Camry XSE drivers set to start on Sunday aim to extend the win streak to five.

Second consecutive race for Johnson … Making the fourth start of his part-time campaign in 2024, Jimmie Johnson will once again pilot the No. 84 Toyota Camry XSE for the second consecutive weekend. Sunday will be his 30th start at Kansas Speedway, where Johnson has three wins (2008, 2011, 2015), nine top-fives and 19 top-10s.

Three Toyota Tundras Inside Truck Series Top 10 … After a week off, the Truck Series is back in action at Kansas with three Toyota Tundra TRD Pros inside the top 10 of the series points standings. Corey Heim leads the Toyota contingent in second position, two points out of the top spot. His TRICON Garage teammates, Taylor Gray and Tanner Gray, sit fifth and ninth in the standings with nine races remaining in the regular season.

Moffitt makes 2024 Trucks debut … Longtime NASCAR veteran, Brett Moffitt, makes his season debut in the Truck Series in the No. 1 Tundra TRD Pro with TRICON Garage. Moffitt returns to Team Toyota after capturing the 2018 Truck Series championship and is making his first Trucks start since winning at Talladega last September.

Heim seeks another Kansas top-10 … Coming back to Kansas Speedway, Heim will be looking for his fourth consecutive top-10 finish at the mile-and-a-half, including coming off a fourth-place finish last year. Another top-10 would also make it eight-for-eight for Heim inside the top-10 so far this season.

    Notes of Interest

    ● Ryan Preece and the No. 41 HaasTooling.com team return to Kansas Speedway in Kansas City for Sunday’s AdventHealth 400 NASCAR Cup Series race aiming to have another strong showing on an intermediate-style oval. In the series’ most recent visit to an intermediate track, the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth on April 14, Preece had an impressive performance during which he ran inside the top-10 for a majority of the race en route to a solid 12th-place finish. It was his best career finish at Texas in eight Cup Series starts.

    ● Sunday’s 267-lap race marks Preece’s ninth Cup Series start at Kansas and his third for Stewart-Haas Racing. He hits the Heartland of America having scored three top-15 finishes in the past four races. Last Sunday at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway, the driver of the No. 41 Ford Mustang Dark Horse was forced to retire 66 laps into the 400-lap race due to a highly unusual issue with his racecar. A part failure led to smoke engulfing the cockpit, and his 37th-place result marked his first DNF (Did Not Finish) since last August at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

    ● Preece has three starts outside of the Cup Series at Kansas, two in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and one in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. His most recent Xfinity Series outing at Kansas came in October 2018 behind the wheel of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing entry. It started well, with Preece advancing from his seventh starting position and moving into the top-five before finished third in the opening stage. But a multicar accident on lap 91 of the 200-lap race took him out of contention, leaving him with a 21st-place finish. In his lone Truck Series start at Kansas with David Gilliland Racing in September 2022, Preece started seventh and earned an impressive third-place finish, collecting 13 stage points along the way.

    ● Returning to Preece’s No. 41 Ford Mustang Dark Horse at Kansas is HaasTooling.com, which has adorned the hood of his car for seven of the 11 races this season. As the cutting tool division of Haas Automation, HaasTooling.com allows CNC machinists to purchase high-quality cutting tools at great prices. You had a strong performance at Texas, the most recent mile-and-a-half track on the schedule. Could we see the same type of performance at Kansas?

“I look back at Texas as being our first real mile-and-a-half race of the season. Vegas didn’t give us a lot. Not being able to turn many laps in practice and switching to a back-up car for the race there didn’t give us an opportunity to see what we had for the mile-and-a-half racetracks this season. So, looking back at Texas, I felt pretty good about our race there. We had good speed during the race. Our emphasis for Kansas is qualifying better. If we don’t do that, it makes for a long day, especially when track position is important like it will be on Sunday.”

You’re 11 races into the season and you’ve put together a string of solid runs over the past several races. What changed from the beginning of the season, when things didn’t seem to be going in your favor?

“The potential has always been there for us. If you look at the beginning of the season, there were two superspeedway races with a lot of unknowns, the wreck in practice at Vegas, and the strategy that didn’t work out at Phoenix. Those things didn’t work in our favor, but we’ve certainly had a few strong runs in the past several races, which is what we wanted to do heading into April. Obviously, things didn’t work out as we had hoped at Dover, but I feel like we would’ve had another good car if not for the issue there. We just really need to work on qualifying better to give us a good shot when it comes time to race.”

How is the race craft different at each of the mile-and-a-half tracks?

“Kansas is totally different from the others, just because the outside is the dominant lane. You need to be able to move around and go where they can’t to have a good run there.”

How does the first Kansas race prepare you for that track when the series returns in September?

“It’s a very different mile-and-a-half racetrack. Conditions can definitely be different from the first to the second time we go there. Depending on how cool or warm it is during the race on Sunday, we can take what we learn and apply it the next time we race there in the fall, when conditions are most likely to be on the warmer side. It’s all about what the racetrack gives us on Sunday, and how close those conditions are to what the racetrack gives us in the fall.”

    Kansas Speedway Competition Notes

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 30, 2024) – Todd Gilliland and the Long John Silver’s crew travel to the Sunflower State for 267 laps at the Kansas Speedway.

After a frustrating weekend at the Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway, Gilliland looks to bounce back at a track where he’s seen success in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series with three top-10 finishes. Gilliland has a career best finish of 23rd at the mile and a half tri-oval in the Cup Series.

The Cup Series will have practice and qualifying on Saturday, May 4th at 5:00 p.m. ET. The 400-mile event will take place Sunday, May 5th at 3:00 p.m. ET and will be televised live on FS1. Fans can also listen in on the action live from Sirius XM and the Motor Racing Network.

No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford Mustang Dark Horse:

    DRIVER TODD GILLILAND:

“Dover was frustrating. You will have races like that but myself and the team know we are better than that. We’ve had our time dwelling on it and learning for next time, but we need to shift our focus to this weekend at Kansas and make up for lost points. I have a feeling we’ll have a solid race.”

    CREW CHIEF RYAN BERGENTY:

“Last week is in the past. We just need to learn from it and move on to Kansas. Todd (Gilliland) has had success there before, we just need to execute and bring a fast Ford Mustang Dark Horse. I think we can bring home a solid finish.”
