WILLIAM BYRON CLAIMS THE WIN AT VIRTUAL DOVER
    Team Chevy Takes Fourth-Straight Victory

CHARLOTTE, NC (May 3, 2020) – For the third time in the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series, William Byron made his way to victory lane in the Finish Line 150 at Virtual Dover International Speedway in his No. 24 Axalta/Voltatex Chevrolet. The victory is his fifth top-10 finish in six races in the series.

With a four-tire stop on the final round of pitstops, Byron’s speed prevailed to take the lead with six laps to go to bring home the victory at the virtual 1-mile oval known as the “Monster Mile”. Leading 79 laps during the 150-lap race, Byron has led the most laps in five of the last six races. “It was fun! We had to go on that restart,” says Byron. “We had four tires and unfortunately, the strategy made us to where we knew we were going to be back in the pack on that last restart. So, it was just all about getting clear and once we got to Timmy (Hill), I knew we had better stuff and just had to work him over for a couple of corners. It was fun, I enjoyed it. I’ve enjoyed this iRacing Series we’ve had going, but definitely ready to get back into my normal car, as well. But this has taught me a lot in the last few weeks, so it’s been fun.”

Byron’s win marks the fourth-straight trip to victory lane for Team Chevy and Hendrick Motorsports in the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series. The win was celebrated by Byron’s teammate Alex Bowman, who finished eighth in his No. 88 ChevyGoods.com/NOCO Chevrolet. Garrett Smithley finished ninth in his No. 51 Chevrolet to give Team Chevy three of the top-10 finishers.

Christopher Bell (Toyota) was second, Timmy Hill (Toyota) was third, Erik Jones (Toyota) was fourth, and Michael McDowell (Ford) rounded out the top-five finishers of the race.

The NASCAR Cup Series is scheduled to return to the track to continue competition at Darlington Raceway on Sunday, May 17, at 3:30 P.M. ET. Live coverage can be found on FOX and MRN.

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 AXALTA / VOLTATEX CHEVROLET TRANSCRIPT:

THE MODERATOR: Thank you for joining us. We’re joined now by William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet and the winner of today’s eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series Finish Line 150 at the Virtual Dover International Speedway.
William, welcome back. This is your third win in six races. Talk to us a little bit about that exciting finish at Dover.
WILLIAM BYRON: It was a lot of fun today. Obviously there was a lot of cautions so I just had to kind of pace myself. It was hard to predict when we were going to get a longer run so it’s hard to know what to do with the tires in terms of how much to save, whatnot.
My help there, Nick, Matt Holden, did a great job of really kind of leaving the strategy up to them as far as what tires to take. I think four tires at the end was the right call to be aggressive. Just thankful for their support and ready to get back to our normal racing here soon.

    Q. William, going back to real racing, you touched on this on the broadcast, with the first four Cup races there being no practice and one qualifying session, what are some of the things you think about as far as preparation for going into these races starting off from scratch?
WILLIAM BYRON: It’s going to be difficult. I think the biggest thing is just trying to prepare yourself well physically. Obviously you’re not going to get that chance to really go through practice and kind of warm up your muscles, I guess you could say, to get ready in the car.
Honestly I’ve just been doing some training and trying to watch some old film of races at Darlington. With it being a daytime race, it’s going to be different as well. A lot of different variables there.
The biggest thing is just being prepared. I’ve used iRacing to train me on the mental side, which I think has really helped me. I’m looking forward to carrying that confidence and momentum over to the Cup car.

    Q. Next week you’ll compete at Virtual North Wilkesboro. How do you approach that race? What do you expect you’ll be doing between now and next Saturday?
WILLIAM BYRON: I’m not really sure what’s going to go on there. I just kind of have to see how this week goes and prepare that way. We’ll see how it goes, whether or not that’s an event we’ll run I guess.

    Q. Who do you think this racing on a green track like at Darlington, the first race at Charlotte, who is going to have the advantage in that? What type of racecar driver will perform best?
WILLIAM BYRON: Gosh, it’s tough. I think all the Cup Series drivers adapt really well. There’s not really going to be an advantage there. A lot of it’s going to fall on the teams and the cars, who hits the setup right.
It’s going to be big because there’s a lot of variables there. You’re not going to have a chance to set the height of the car, predict where the splitter is going to end up, where the back is going to travel to.
As a driver all you can do is put consistent laps together. You have to be efficient in traffic at the start of the race. I do feel like there’s going to be some mistakes made, some bounces off the wall, things like that. You have to avoid that in the first run or so. Then you’ll start to see who really has the car after that.
I would assume it’s going to be the same guys that run well at Darlington because they probably have an idea of what their setup needs to be and what they want to feel in their car. Probably no surprises there. But it will take adaptation as a driver, which I think we’re all capable of doing.

    Q. Racing at Darlington, one of the first major sports returning, what is the feeling? Pride, fear, excitement? Put that in perspective.
WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I’m excited. Obviously we’re going to have to be careful health‑wise, really take care of ourselves. That starts with us as drivers to make sure that we’re being smart and things of that nature.
When it comes to the racing I’m honestly just very excited because it kind of goes back to your roots as a driver of when you show up and you race, maybe you have a few laps’ practice, but ultimately you get in the car and drive.
I’m looking forward to that aspect of the race, not really being there for a long time, but just getting out there and driving.
The result is going to be right there pretty quickly in front of you. I’m excited about that. It’s going to be a different dynamic from what I’m used to in the Cup Series of two‑ or three‑day weekends.

    Q. Talk about the art of working a guy over at Darlington cleanly, how it applies from iRacing to Darlington in real life?
WILLIAM BYRON: It’s honestly very similar. You get a run on a guy, there’s really one groove, one and a half at Darlington. It’s all about timing that run off the corner to get to their inside. Then ultimately it comes down to who is the smartest in that situation to hold position.
Yeah, I mean, Darlington is a tough track to pass. It’s easy to pass if you have a good car there, good rhythm going. It’s very much of a rhythm track for a driver. Getting into rhythm quicker than later is definitely going to be key.

    Q. You’ve run several Outlaw races. Do you have any interest in running a midget, the Chili Bowl Nationals, virtual, on Wednesday night?
WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I just heard about that. Christopher was tweeting a lot about it. We were talking a little bit after the race about it. I might try to do that. I mean, I don’t really have any experience in the midget on iRacing at all. I’ve been doing the Outlaw cars, the 410 sprint cars, which has been a lot of fun.
I’ll probably do that Tuesday show at Volusia, I think it is. If that goes well I might do the Wednesday show. Just kind of depends how the week goes.
Obviously there’s a big emphasis on me for training, getting ready for the physical aspect of the car. I’m going to try to limit my iRacing just so I can get both in at the same time.

    Q. Can you take us through what you’re doing for training? What is your typical training regime? Is it something you’re going to almost have to step up now to be prepared for the exhaustion level that comes with the first couple races, doing so many in a short period of time?
WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I think the sim racing, as much as it is not physical because there’s no g‑load on your body, it is physical in the fact that adrenaline goes. That produces certain I guess things that your body does to cope with it.
Honestly, I’m glad that’s happened through the iRacing races, the adrenaline aspect is there, because it’s important to me at least. I like that. But obviously the physical aspect of g‑load and your legs, all the core exercise that you need to have is going to be a huge undertaking. I’ve tried to work on that lately.

    Q. I know there’s getting into shape and then getting into game shape. A driver or two talked about doing some go‑karting in the next couple weeks to get used to the beating and banging. Is that something you’d look to do especially with Max? What is the mindset in terms of stepping up the training to get more into game shape as opposed to being in physically good shape?
WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I definitely agree. I think going to the karting track is something that’s big on our priority list. Really that’s kind of why my iRacing structure this week might be a little different, just because of that. That’s something that we use pretty heavily.
Yeah, that’s going to be an aspect that can be used. Obviously you can’t go get in any other racecar. The karting track will be a good tool leading up. Also the Chevrolet simulator as well.
I think there’s a lot of tools that can be used. I’m going to try to prepare as similar as I do for the first race at Daytona every year, try to just follow those lines.

    Q. Being two weeks out, the idea or thought about competing without fans, you’ll be spaced out in the infield. For drivers, you’ll be in your motor coach and then straight to the car. What do you imagine or think that is going to be like? What will you miss most in that type of situation, not being able to be with your team?
WILLIAM BYRON: I’m going to miss the family aspect at the track, the fan aspect at first. I think it’s going to be much different not to have that prerace hype and environment around the race.
For me, it will just allow me to focus more and be around my team, not have any distractions I guess you could say. I think there’s pros and cons for sure. I’m going to miss the environment, but it will make it a little bit easier as a driver I believe to get ready.
Honestly I’d liken it to the way that rain delays are when you kind of are sitting around, then all of a sudden it’s time to go race. Those are difficult situations. You got to not kind of trap yourself in that cool and calm environment. It’s difficult to get hyped up for the race, but I’ll try to keep things as normal as possible.

    Q. As a team, you’ve been doing virtual meetings during this time? Have you talked amongst yourselves?
WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, we’ve had a few. The team guys have had much more than I’ve had. I think there’s a weekly for sure. For me, I’ve been involved in a couple of calls with Mr. H and Marshall and Jeff Andrews and Chad obviously, my crew chief.
Yeah, I think it’s important that we kind of stay in the loop obviously because we can’t really see each other. We’ve tried to do Zoom calls and all those things for the past couple weeks.

    Q. Prior to Darlington you’ll have a meeting, but is there talk about meeting in person prior to race day? Do you think it will be important whether you meet in person or virtual before the first race?
WILLIAM BYRON: I think it’s going to be important to kind of meet in person maybe at a distance or something just to get going with Chad, just kind of understand where we are there.
Chad and I have kept pretty close contact throughout the last few weeks. Yeah, we’re going to try to do what we can to meet but keep it safe at the same time.

    Q. Before a race do you feed off the fact that all the crews are on pit road, there’s fans, the anthem, all the stuff that goes into the prerace? If you do, how does that change with what’s going to happen now because it will be a ghost town in relative terms?
WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, it will be so much different. Really for us as drivers I think most of us get in the zone once we’re in the racecar. That’s similar whether it’s iRacing or real racing. The adrenaline hits you once the engine fires and the window net is up, you’re in your own capsule there.
It will be different for the teams of not having the aspect before the race of hype and buildup. As a driver, nothing matters until you’re in the seat and actually driving.

    Q. Does this create a new reality? Bubba Wallace said this will change how you interact with fans maybe long‑term.
WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, it could, for sure. I don’t really know the implications there. It could definitely change the reality for us. I think honestly that was kind of changing as we were still racing before this all started. It was hard to understand or come to terms with. It was changing rapidly. It will be different.

    Q. You talked about the communication between you and Chad. What will it look like in a garage area or back at the shop for Hendrick Motorsports to start getting prepared for the next couple of weeks in preparation for Darlington?
WILLIAM BYRON: I’m sure it’s going to be different just because guys are having to wear masks, kind of keep themselves isolated from each other. I’m sure I’ll go over there a couple times this week to get a feel for what the car feels like and everything like that.
It is much different to be there and kind of just not be able to go about business as normal.

    Q. Has the team been doing any practicing for pit stops? Is there going to be something somewhat different preparing for Darlington?
WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I’m sure they’ve done some practice. Obviously it has to be kind of on their own. I’m sure it’s going to be an adjustment for the pit crew guys as well to be able to go out there kind of cold turkey. I’m sure that’s difficult.

    Q. I clearly understand the difference between being in a real racecar and iRacing. What kind of confidence or uptick does it give you to have so thoroughly dominated in this? You go back into racing at Darlington feeling pretty good I would think.
WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, it honestly feels really good. I feel like even though obviously it’s virtual racing, it’s a very similar platform to what we do. The physics and geometry of everything is similar.
What gives me confidence is the fact that in pressure situations, being able to deliver under those is critical in a real racecar because everyone can go real fast, but it comes down to the strategy and execution of that.
It gives me a lot of confidence in the heated moments of the race. I’m excited to bring that back over to the real racecar.

    Q. You mentioned the Chevy simulator earlier. How much does iRacing compare with the simulator? What are some of the positives iRacing has versus the simulator and vice versa?
WILLIAM BYRON: I think that’s a good question. There’s some subtle differences for sure. I think the biggest thing that iRacing has is you can race against other people and you’re not just racing laps by yourself. The other thing is the tire wear that iRacing has modeled is pretty exceptional. I think those two things allow you to be able to race against guys and to learn things mentally of how you would handle situations.
The thing that iRacing doesn’t have that the Chevy sim has is the movement and the up‑to‑date setups and technology we use. It’s much more similar on a car setup side to what we’re actually doing in the real racing.

    Q. As the Pro Invitational series is winding down, many have said they would like to keep iRacing with you guys to keep this relevant. Do you think an off‑season series is possible?
WILLIAM BYRON: It could be, yeah. I mean, I don’t think anything required would be a good idea. If you love to iRace, I think it’s a good idea to have a series of some sort in the off time. I already do that myself with iRacing. I already race in the off‑season to get better.
I feel like I would still use it regardless, whether there’s a series or not. It is cool to have gatherings of some of the guys that are racing on Sundays and being able to kind of mix it up like we are.

    Q. You’re obviously from North Carolina. Have you been at the real North Wilkesboro Speedway before to go see it or for a race they’ve had?
WILLIAM BYRON: I haven’t. I haven’t, no. I’ve been past the racetrack but I’ve never even seen a lap around there. I don’t know. I got to kind of watch some races, old races, see how it is.
THE MODERATOR: Thank you, William, for joining us today.
WILLIAM BYRON: Thank you, guys. Appreciate it.
THE MODERATOR: Thank you to the media for joining us as well.

    AUSTIN DILLON QUOTE:
Does Dover drive like a giant Bristol, or not so much?
“Not so much. There’s a lot of aero stuff that comes into play at Dover because you’re going so fast. You see different lines come into play as the rubber builds up. It’s always fun on a long run when you can run way up by the fence and find speed. Of course, there’s a bit of an unknown heading into a virtual race. I’m looking forward to it.”

This Week’s Caterpillar Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE at the virtual Dover International Speedway … Tyler Reddick is a former race winner in the NASCAR Truck Series at Dover International Speedway. The two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion also has five starts in the series at the “Monster Mile,” with his best finish of third coming during the May 2019 race. This weekend marks Reddick’s first virtual start at Dover International Speedway in the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series on Sunday.

Caterpillar says “Thank You” … What does it mean when someone says “thank you?” The global health crisis truly illustrates how critical many jobs are and how many of us took them for granted. While some of us are forced to isolate from home, other bravely continue to do the work, risking their health and safety to keep their communities moving forward. Medical professionals putting the rest of us ahead of their own loved ones. Folks who are part of supply chains are doing more than just stocking shelves, they’re delivering inspiration. We’re all feeling the uncertainty, but we’re also feeling a profound sense of gratitude.

At Caterpillar, we want to say “thank you.” Not just to our customers who continue to build towards a better tomorrow. But to people everywhere who are digging in, working hard and giving us hope as we struggle through. In the coming weeks, our gratitude will take many forms including … a special “thank you” design on the Cat Racing car for the next virtual race and its eventual return to the track.

We’re in a fight for the future. We’re in it together. And to those of you on the front lines… “thank you.” Learn more by visiting Cat.com/thanks.

The Crew … From his home in North Carolina, Reddick will be competing in Sunday’s eNASCAR iRacing Pro invitational Series race in a rig provided by Sim Seats. Joey Stone, who competes under the RCR eSports banner in the eNASCAR Heat Pro League, will also be spotting for Reddick during the race.

    TYLER REDDICK QUOTE:
Dover International Speedway is a tough track to race at in person, so how do you think it will race virtually?
“I’ve had some good runs at Dover International Speedway in the past, including a win in the NASCAR Truck Series, but I’m curious to see how virtual Dover plays out over iRacing. So much of being successful at Dover focuses on getting a good balance in your race car in order to handle the loads it takes in the corners there. I’m not sure how much of that will translate virtually, but I’m up for the challenge in the No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet. I’m excited to be helping them kick off their ‘Thank You Truckers’ campaign this weekend to help bring attention to those who are still helping our world continue moving forward, and hope to celebrate some of our truck drivers in NASCAR throughout the month of May.”

This Week’s Tribute to a Hero – Wally Yocum Chevrolet Camaro at the virtual Dover International Speedway … Anthony Alfredo has one real-world start at Dover International Speedway in the NASCAR ARCA East Series. Despite his limited experience at the Monster Mile, Alfredo is an experienced competitor on iRacing and hopes that will help put him in contention for the race win in this weekend’s Saturday Night Thunder race.

Welcome, Tribute to a Hero – Wally Yocum … This week the No. 33 team is honoring the late Air Force crew chief Wally Yocum. We thank Wally for his sacrifices, service to his country, and his many innovations to the aircraft engine development and maintenance programs for the US Air Force.

Yocum’s Story … Yocum’s Korean experiences found him near the famous 38th parallel in war-torn Korea, stationed at Kimpo AFB near Seoul, known as K-14. He was part of the 4th Fighter Wing. Many individuals put their lives on the line every day in a foreign country for our freedom, and Yocum was one of them. He was a crew chief for the world famous 336th Rocketeers. Yocum had to maintain and continuously monitor an F86-F fighter-interceptor sabre jet, while giving his pilot the most thrust and fuel economy to safely engage an enemy for any conflict that may arise. When he wasn’t checking tolerances on the fighter jet, Yocum had to perform guard duty at Kimpo AFB. He always cited the sergeant, “You better get your bayonet on, you only have 90 rounds.” Yocum’s pilot was Lieutenant Ken Ewing of FU-539 F86-F sabre. The nose art on the side of the plane displayed “Sweet Rose”, the name of the woman he was dating before being deployed. After returning to the United States, he married Rose and continued his lifelong passion for family and aircraft. Yocum started a family, and was everything a great father, husband and role model could ever be. Yocum went on to receive four service medals during the Korean War and two posthumously. The Planes of Fame museum in Chino, CA, will be opening a new Korean War memorial this year and Yocum’s F-86 sabre will be featured at the entrance to the memorial park. Find more information about him at yocumusa.com/sweetrose.

The Crew … From his home in North Carolina, Alfredo will be competing in the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series Saturday Night Thunder race in a rig provided by Sim Seats. Alfredo has a talented support system on Saturday, including Zack Novak and his teammate Jimmy Mullis, who will serve as crew chief and spotter, respectively. The duo race for Richmond Raceway eSports in the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series and won the championship last year.

    ANTHONY ALFREDO QUOTE:
You have been very strong, running up front every week in these virtual races and nearly claimed your first win last week at Talladega. How high is your confidence level coming into virtual Dover this weekend?
“I am very proud of the time and effort I have put into these iRacing events, and it’s definitely showing. I am a huge advocate for iRacing so I have been really enjoying these events. Coca-Cola iRacing Series drivers, Jimmy Mullis and Zack Novak, have helped me a lot each race. Dover is actually one track that is completely new to me on the simulator so you can expect me to prepare for this one by spending a lot of time practicing and running some official online races leading up to the big show. We have a lot of momentum we can carry into this weekend after coming so close to winning last weekend. I’m also very proud to honor Wally Yocum as we pay tribute to a hero this weekend. It’s only a matter of time before we park our No. 33 Tribute to a Hero – Wally Yocum Chevrolet in Victory Lane!”

    MYATT SNIDER QUOTE:
Dover is a very fast and challenging racetrack. What exactly makes it so tough to get around and how are you feeling about your chances at the virtual Monster Mile this weekend?
“Dover hasn’t just earned the nickname “Monster Mile” for being fast. It’s a really tough place to get around. You have to really hustle the car, but you walk a fine line between over driving and under driving. Despite being so challenging, Dover is a fantastic racetrack, and I can’t wait to Slay It on track this weekend in my TaxSlayer Camaro.”

This Week’s HotScream Chevrolet Camaro at the virtual Dover International Speedway… Grala has four combined starts at the ‘Monster Mile’ across the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Truck Series with a best finish of second from 2017. Grala will add the virtual version of the track to his resume this Saturday.

HotScream … HotScream takes two concepts, dessert and spicy food, and combines them to form a product that can only be described as ‘HotScream The Spicy Ice Cream’. By taking ice cream with its cool creaminess and incorporating a spicy swirl, HotScream has created a new taste sensation, one that almost defies one’s own senses. At first, you taste the pureness of the vanilla, followed quickly by the sweetness of one of seven flavor swirls. As you continue to enjoy HotScream, things change: You feel a warming sensation that starts in the back of your mouth, creating a rush that only can come from spicy foods. The warming continues to linger but doesn’t engulf your mouth with fire. Taking another bite, you again taste the cool, creamy vanilla and the respective flavor profile while the heat dissipates, only to come back time and time again. HotScream is currently available at ACME Markets, Big Y, select ShopRites, Stop & Shop and 400 Walmart locations from Maine to Texas. For more information, visit HotScream.com.

    KAZ GRALA QUOTE:
You have recently dived into iRacing and achieved an A class license in just a few weeks. Are you starting to get more comfortable iRacing and what are your expectations for virtual Dover this weekend?
“I’m definitely starting to catch on more and more on iRacing. I am seeing positive results in my official races during the week, which has directly translated to the Saturday Night Thunder races. Dover has always been one of my best tracks in the real world, so I am hoping that will carry over to the virtual track. I feel really confident about our chances this Saturday, and hopefully I’ll be able to wheel our No. 29 HotScream up front and put on a show Saturday!”

What’s going on in the Pro Invitational Series to date?

While NASCAR’s on-track activity has been postponed through the weekend of May 3rd to align with CDC guidance, drivers and fans are turning to the virtual world to see some of the best racing competition around.

NASCAR, iRacing and FOX Sports teamed up to deliver the first-ever eNASCAR iRacing Pro invitational Series event, the Dixie Vodka 150, at virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway after all national pro sports were put on hold due to the pandemic a few weeks ago. FOX Sports later committed to covering the remainder of the season, which began Sunday, March 29, at 1 p.m. ET from virtual Texas Motor Speedway.

The third race of the series was at virtual Bristol Motor Speedway, where iRacing veteran William Byron took the checkered flag. Next, the series went to virtual Richmond Raceway, where Byron once again took the checkered flag and won back-to-back races. Last weekend’s race at virtual Talladega Superspeedway was won by Alex Bowman.

Corey LaJoie finished runner-up, Ryan Preece finished third, Garrett Smithley finished fourth and Landon Cassill rounded out the top five. Jeff Gordon, who had only been in the iRacing broadcast booth, got behind the wheel of the No. 24 over the weekend and made his iRacing debut. After some on-track incidents, he finished 38th.

The series’ opening event on March 22, won by three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin, drew 903,000 viewers on FS1. The second series race at Texas Motor Speedway, won by Timmy Hill, drew 1.3 million viewers. Bristol’s virtual race drew 1.179 million viewers and got a 0.81 rating, won by Byron. Richmond’s virtual event, also won by Byron, earned 971,000 viewers and was the second-most watched sports event of the weekend.

Most recently, Talladega’s virtual event earned 1.24 million viewers and is the second-highest viewed NASCAR iRacing event so far.

This weekend, the series heads to the Monster Mile to take on the virtual 1-mile oval at 1 p.m. ET on FOX, FS1 and FOX Sports app.

    Pro Invitational Series charitable efforts
This weekend at virtual Dover International Speedway, the charity partner for response to COVID-19 is the Bayhealth Foundation in partnership with The NASCAR Foundation. Donations to the Bayhealth Foundation will support ongoing efforts to support the Bayhealth Hospital and media staff that are involved in the COVID-19 testing at Dover International Speedway.

The donations will also benefit the Bayhealth Foundation’s mobile testing, protection equipment and the media supplies needed during the pandemic.

Donations can be made by visiting https://www.NASCARfoundation.org/response.

Axalta has increased the supply of its Voltatex electrical insulating resins to ensure its medical device customers are well equipped to rapidly produce life-saving equipment, such as ventilator motors and N95 facemasks, which are in high demand by hospitals globally during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Axalta’s Voltatex products are on the front lines in the fight against COVID-19,” said Dave Heflin, Axalta’s Vice President, Global Industrial Liquid Coatings. “As a supplier to medical device companies globally, we are manufacturing more product so that our customers can continue to ramp up production of critical ventilators and N95 facemasks for hospitals around the world.”

The field will consist of a 39-driver entry list. The top-three finishers for Talladega (Alex Bowman, Corey LaJoie, Ryan Preece) will be relegated to the back of the starting lineup and will not make a qualifying attempt.

Legendary Coca-Cola 600 Remains on Memorial Day Weekend

    NASCAR All-Star Race Postponed

    • The 61st running of the legendary Coca-Cola 600 will take place on Sunday evening, May 24, in its traditional Memorial Day Weekend slot on the NASCAR schedule
    • The Coca-Cola 600 will be broadcast live worldwide on FOX and PRN at 6:00 p.m.
    • The 600-mile event will take place without spectators in attendance due to continued restrictions on public gatherings during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic
    • The May 16 NASCAR All-Star Race has been postponed to a yet-to-be determined date

CONCORD, N.C. (April 30, 2020) – The 61st running of the legendary Coca-Cola 600 will take place on Sunday, May 24, at 6:00 p.m. during Memorial Day Weekend as NASCAR brings live competition back to a worldwide broadcast audience on FOX and PRN. Due to continued restrictions on public gatherings during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the race will take place without spectators in attendance. The May 16 NASCAR All-Star Race has been postponed to a yet-to-be determined date.

“I’d like to thank Gov. Cooper, NASCAR and all of our state and local government and health officials who have worked so hard with us to make this happen,” said Speedway Motorsports President and Chief Executive Officer Marcus Smith. “This has been a proactive effort to put our motorsports industry back to work and boost the morale of sports fans around the world, while at the same time keeping the health and safety of all who will be on site the top priority.

“As America fights its way back from the pandemic and the economic shutdown, we’re proud that one of the world’s most iconic races, the Coca-Cola 600, will take place on Memorial Day Weekend as it traditionally has for nearly six decades,” said Smith. “As one of the first races back on television, the Coca-Cola 600 will be part of America’s broadcast coming-out party for live, major-league sports competition. Sports fans around the world need this — a return to some sense of normalcy with live sports on TV — and NASCAR is uniquely positioned to deliver it from a competition standpoint.

“Like our fans, we are disappointed that they cannot join us at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the race, but we understand these are unprecedented circumstances dictated by what’s best for the health and safety of the general public,” Smith added. “We ask every race fan to tune in with us to FOX to celebrate another historic Coca-Cola 600 and salute our U.S. Armed Forces on Memorial Day Weekend.”

NASCAR and Charlotte Motor Speedway have developed a comprehensive plan reviewed by state and local health agencies to protect the health and safety of the competitors, crew members, employees and broadcast crews that will produce the race. The plan includes limiting overall personnel, pre-event screening, social distancing on site, using personal protective equipment and sanitizing areas of the facility both before and during the event.

Also included on NASCAR’s revised race event schedule without spectators, the May 23 Alsco 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series Race has been postponed to Monday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m., while the May 15 N.C. Education Lottery 200 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race has been postponed to Tuesday, May 26, at 8:00 p.m. Both events will be telecast on FSI. The May 22 General Tire 150 ARCA race and May 23 United Rentals Patriot Nationals World of Outlaws race have been postponed to yet-to-be-determined dates.

COMMENT FROM DARLINGTON RACEWAY PRESIDENT KERRY THARP

“It’s an honor for Darlington Raceway to resume the 2020 NASCAR season in just a few short weeks with three races in four days. Darlington is one of the most iconic and historic tracks in the sport and will be a tremendous backdrop when NASCAR returns to racing. We certainly appreciate the support from our state’s leadership in working with NASCAR to allow us to host these events.

“In accordance with the CDC and public health agency standards and protocols, no fans will be admitted to these events; however, we encourage all fans to tune in to FOX, FS1, FOX Deportes, MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.”

COMMENT FROM SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR HENRY McMASTER

“As our nation restarts, I can think of no better place for NASCAR to drop the green flag than at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. Team South Carolina stands ready to help NASCAR restart the season at Darlington Raceway with three races next month that can be enjoyed by fans from home on television, radio, and online.”

Darlington Raceway has never hosted three Cup Series races in a single season. The last time the track hosted two NASCAR Cup Series races in the same season was 2004 when Jimmie Johnson won both events. The track, which opened in 1950 and is considered the oldest superspeedway in the sport, regularly hosted two Cup races a year from 1960-2004.

Virtual Dover Advance – Wood Brothers No. 21 Mustang

Matt DiBenedetto and his Wood Brothers team are preparing for another Sunday competing in the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series, this time at the virtual Dover International Speedway where the No. 21 Mustang will once again carry the colors and the message of Built Ford Proud.

The iRacing events are NASCAR’s way of giving fans a taste of Cup Series competition while the nation deals with a coronavirus that has prevented real races from being held.

But that’s not all that DiBenedetto, the Wood Brothers and Ford Motor Company have been doing in service of their fellow Americans during the recent crisis.

Ford has shifted factory production to making ventilators and protective equipment to be used by COVID-19 victims and the health care workers who are treating them.

The Wood Brothers, DiBenedetto and their fans have raised more than $33,000 to provide iPads to nursing home residents at 12 different facilities. The iPads allow residents, who are quarantined because of the virus, to communicate via computer with their loved ones on the outside.

DiBenedetto and his wife Taylor are doing videos through Cameo to raise funds for the animal shelter where they adopted their dog Brian. The videos raised $438 in less than 24 hours after they were first offered.

Now DiBenedetto, the Wood Brothers and Ford turn their attention to this weekend’s race at the virtual Dover.

“I didn’t fare too well at Talladega,” DiBenedetto said of the most recent Invitational race. “I was in a couple of crashes.”

While he admits he’s not the best iRacer, he feels much better about his prospects at Dover, which he says requires similar iRacing tactics to one of his better tracks in real life and online, Bristol Motor Speedway.

Both tracks are high-speed concrete ovals.

“Dover is a bigger, faster version of Bristol,” he said. “Hopefully it will be a better race for me.”

With governments in the Southeast beginning to ease restriction put in place to slow the spread of the coronavirus, it’s beginning to look like the Cup cars will be back on the track soon, although the initial races likely will be run without fans in the stands. It also appears that the schedule will be tight, with multiple races run in a span of a few days.

DiBenedetto said he’s anxious to get back to work in the real No. 21 Mustang.

“I’m ready to get back behind the wheel and put on a good show for the fans,” he said. “I’m OK with whatever we have to do logistically to get back going.”

In the meantime, there’s Sunday’s iRacing event at Dover, which is set to get the green flag at 1 p.m. Eastern Time, with TV coverage on FOX and FOX Sports 1.

Original Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet Highlights Richard Childress’ Personal Memorabilia Auction and Sale to Assist COVID-19 Relief Efforts

NASCAR-Winning Race Car Up for Auction Beginning May 8 Through Barrett-Jackson

WELCOME, NC (April 29, 2020) – An original No. 3 Chevrolet driven by Dale Earnhardt highlights the thousands of rare, hard-to-find and exclusive items available to collectors through an auction and sale of legendary NASCAR team owner Richard Childress’ personal collection of memorabilia. All proceeds will benefit national and local COVID-19 relief efforts.

Earnhardt made select NASCAR Cup Series starts in this intermediate-style Chevrolet at tracks such as Bristol Motor Speedway, Dover International Speedway, Rockingham Speedway and Darlington Raceway between 1996 and 1999. Highlighted by a win at Rockingham Speedway in 1996, Earnhardt did not finish worse than fourth with Chassis No. 22 in its first three on-track appearances.

This marks the first time that Childress has parted with an original Earnhardt car from his collection.

“I’ve grown my personal collection of memorabilia throughout my career in NASCAR and have especially enjoyed the Dale Earnhardt cars in my collection because they each have such a unique history that bring back priceless memories of my years winning and racing with Dale,” said Childress. “I’ve never parted with an Earnhardt Chevrolet from my collection, but with a global pandemic taking place and people in our communities suffering, it’s time to do what I can to help. All proceeds will benefit much-needed causes to fight the devastating effects of COVID-19 on a local and national level.”

A variety of national and local causes will benefit from the auction and sale, with Childress contributing all proceeds to various COVID-19 relief efforts, including providing support to national and local first responders and front-line workers in need of personal protection equipment. A portion of proceeds will also benefit Feeding America, which is providing meals to children out of school, providing support to food banks and continuing the distribution of essential food and non-food household items.

The car will be auctioned exclusively through the Barrett-Jackson Online Only May 2020 Auction beginning May 8, 2020, with the sale of the Earnhardt race car ending on May 16. To register to bid, visit: https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Bidder/Home/AddRegistration

“We’re incredibly honored to assist Richard Childress with the sale of this historically important car during this crucial time in our nation’s history,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Not only is this a rare chance to own an original race car from his NASCAR collection, but it’s a chance to come together as Americans and help those who have been affected by COVID-19.”

In addition to the car, Childress’ personal memorabilia collection includes a variety of rare and hard-to-find items, including pre-production models of diecasts, some of which never went into production. Those items are available on eBay at https://www.ebay.com/str/RichardChildresscollection.

    About Richard Childress Racing:
Richard Childress Racing (rcrracing.com) is a renowned, performance-driven racing, marketing and manufacturing organization. Incorporated in 1969, RCR has celebrated over 50 years of racing and earned more than 200 victories and 16 championships, including six in the NASCAR Cup Series with the legendary Dale Earnhardt. Race: eNASCAR Finish Line 150
    Date/Time: Sunday, May 3/1 p.m. ET
    Distance: 150 laps
    Track Length: 1 mile
    Track Shape: Oval
    Banking: 24 degrees

    Express Notes:

eNASCAR Talladega Recap: Denny Hamlin finished 39th in Sunday’s virtual NASCAR race at Talladega Superspeedway following damage early and late-race technical difficulties eliminated him from contention in the iRacing Pro Invitational Series race won by Alex Bowman. Hamlin started 36th in the #11 FedEx “Delivering Strength” Toyota paint scheme and had planned to ride around at the back of the field to avoid early wrecks. However, he made side-by-side contact with teammate Erik Jones early in the race to cause some damage. He fixed the damage under the race’s first caution and restarted at the back of the field. However, shortly after the restart, Hamlin was spun on the back straightaway to get additional damage, losing a lap to the leaders. Hamlin’s simulator monitor went dark with 20 laps to go during green flag run, and he pulled off the track and was eliminated from the race.

eNASCAR Dover Preview: The eNASCAR Finish Line 150 at virtual Dover International Speedway will be the sixth event in the eNASCAR Pro Invitational Series, providing fans with virtual racing while at-track competition is on hiatus. After a disappointing finish at Talladega due to early damage and late technical difficulties, Hamlin looks ahead to the simulated “Monster Mile” in hopes of retuning his FedEx Toyota to virtual Victory Lane.

FedEx “Delivering Strength” Paint Scheme: The #11 FedEx Toyota will sport a special paint scheme for the Dover eNASCAR race, carrying the message “Delivering Strength” on the hood and #fedexstrong on the back of the car. FedEx wishes to draw attention to not just its 475,000 FedEx team members, but all the organizations FedEx is working with during the COVID-19 crisis, including nonprofit organizations, the healthcare community and FedEx customers.

    Hamlin Conversation – Virtual Dover:

Can virtual Dover be easier to conquer than real Dover?

“I’ve had my struggles at Dover in my career. It’s definitely not my best track. But we can win anywhere, including Dover. I’ll try to get some extra practice laps in to see if we can give the ‘Monster’ a good battle. We’d certainly like to get the attention for our FedEx ‘Delivering Strength’ Toyota, giving out a shout-out to not just the nearly half a million FedEx team members working hard right now, but also the nonprofits, healthcare workers and FedEx customers, all working together during the pandemic.”

What changes will you need to make in hopes of a different result at Dover?

“Talladega was a mess of a race. We got damage early, lost our track position, got spun and then had technical issues with my monitors to take us out. My daughter accidentally turned them off during the race at the end. We’ll make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

“Everyone is getting better at iRacing. Guys like William Byron, Timmy Hill and some others are always going to be good. But, everyone is getting better, too, and it makes the iRacing events hard to win.

“It’s cool to run up front. I’ve led some laps and it’s been fun. It helps our partners to see their car leading on TV. We have ACME Supermarkets on the car this weekend with retail partners such as Essentia, Minute Rice, Nudges Dog Treats and Ziploc. It’s a great program that we have and the people at ACME right now are working really hard. It will be cool to get them a win this weekend.

“I know that we’re still having fun with iRacing, but I also think we’re getting closer to racing. It may look different, but I know that our fans will be excited. Everyone is anxious to see us race and I’ll be ready.”

WHEN IT COMES TO CARS LOGANO HAS IT COVERED FROM MODEL T TO GT

“Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black.”

Those words from Henry Ford came in 1909 shortly after he decided the Ford Motor Company would only make the Model T, which was produced from 1908-1927 and became the most popular vehicle of the time with more than 15 million units sold.

Nobody can know for sure if Joey Logano and Mr. Ford would have agreed on every issue that faced the company during its formative years, but they would have definitely been on the same page with that specific statement.

All one needs to do is look at some of the cars Logano has accumulated in recent years to realize he has a love affair with the color.

“Everything I own is black. I like black,” said Logano, who counts a 1924 Model T and 2017 Ford GT among the personal favorites in his growing collection. “I guess I fell in love when I bought the Ford GT with the heritage scheme on it, the matte black exterior, silver stripe and the number on the door. I kind of fell in love with that.”

He even went so far as to put the two Ford icons nose-to-nose in his driveway a couple of weeks ago as a way of showing to himself that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

“Driving them is obviously different, and so is the way they’re built with the technology and the geometry of looking at it, but you still have four tires and there’s still air in those tires,” reasoned Logano, who counts the F-350 Tremor as his preferred daily driver. “Yeah, your suspension pieces are all different, but it still has a steering wheel, it’s still got a motor. There’s just a lot of similarities that are still being used today even though the cars couldn’t be more different.”

To illustrate that point, he took wife Brittany and two-year-old son Hudson for a drive through their neighborhood, starting first with what Hudson calls the “T-ride”.

“We drive the Model T around like it’s a golf cart. It puts a smile on everyone’s face and we love it,” said Logano, who gave the Godfather of Ford Performance, Edsel B. Ford II, a ride in it through the streets of Concord, NC, a few years ago. “And then after that I was cleaning my GT and I was like, ‘I’ll take this around the neighborhood real quick’ and it was like, ‘Whoa. Different worlds.’ But it was fun and it’s cool.

“People look at you funny when you’re trying to crank start your Model T. You get some funny looks, but it’s fun for me,” continued Logano. “I think the reason why I love it so much is that it’s challenging to drive. If you drive a race car every day, driving a street car is really, really simple and boring – like really boring. If you drive a GT around, it’s just tempting you to go to jail. I still want a challenge, but I don’t want to go to jail, which makes the Model T the best car I have.”

It may be the best one, but it’s far from the only one.

For instance, he owns a 1961 Ford Econoline truck that he bought from a security guard at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He restored it by lowering the height, painting the outside matte white and then trimming the dash, steering wheel and tires out in lime green. The final touch was installing lime green shag carpet in the truck’s bed.

“I went camping with Hudson in our backyard the other night because I put a pop-up camper that’s all screened in on the back of it,” said Logano, who has two wins in four starts in the NASCAR Cup Series this season. “We had a little TV and watched the Little Rascals in there, and we camped out at least until 11:40. That’s as far as we got, but it was fun. That stuff is cool to me.”

Next, is a 1991 Foxbody Mustang that has everything Logano loves in a car, except for the color.

“It’s royal blue and it’s way too blue for me, but outside of that this car is amazing,” he said. “It’s totally re-done. It’s got a big old supercharger on it. Honestly, it can give the GT a run for its money. It’s a real car – roll cage, the whole nine yards. It’s awesome. Bang for the buck, that’s the best car I’ve got.”

And then he’s got his toys, like the Factory Five drift truck he helped build last year and the recently completed Mach 1, or Mach 22 as it was dubbed by Car Kings on Discovery Channel earlier this month, that have the same matte black paint scheme as his GT.

But when one project ends in Logano’s world another begins and, thanks to NASCAR on NBC reporter Rutledge Wood, it’s now sitting right in front of him.

“He’s been hounding me to buy this thing for two years. For two years he’s been trying to sell this truck, and I finally got him down enough to where he just caved,” laughed Logano. “So now I have this truck and it needs a lot of work, but I just think it would be cool going to a car show or something with it one day.”

What color does he plan on painting it?

    Any color he wants.
