Ford Performance NASCAR: Blaney Getting iRace Ready For Texas Motor Speedway

RYAN BLANEY GETTING iRACE READY FOR TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Ryan Blaney found himself like many race fans last weekend as he watched the NASCAR debut of iRacing from the grandstands. And while he enjoyed the view, he’s used to being part of the action.

So when Fox Sports hits the airwaves on Sunday from the virtual Texas Motor Speedway, Blaney will be behind the wheel of his familiar No. 12 Ford Mustang.

“I’ve never been a big iRacing person for multiple reasons, but it just looked like it was a lot of fun,” said Blaney. “The thing that pushed me into making it want to happen was seeing how the fans enjoyed it. Social media was blowing up and people really enjoyed just watching some form of racing again, which is nice. I saw their support and their push for me to try to get in, so I was happy we were able to make it happen.”

Blaney has internet connectivity issues from his home, one of the few drawbacks he finds living in the North Carolina wilderness, so he’s joined forces with his spotter, Josh Williams. A noted iRacer himself, Williams is opening his house and loaning his rig so Blaney can compete.

“I practiced on Monday and Josh has kind of been helping me out,” said Blaney, whose only real simulator experience has come at the Ford Performance Technical Center in Concord, NC. “I’m not the biggest tech savvy person out there, especially when it comes to that stuff, but it was neat watching everybody on there again. There were a lot of Cup guys and XFINITY guys and some Truck guys doing it, but it’s something I’m pretty green at, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Last Sunday’s race at Homestead featured nine cautions as a mix of experience led to some major wrecks, but, thanks to their handy reset button, everybody was able to finish. Blaney is hoping he doesn’t need that this weekend, but he’s glad it’s there, just in case.

And despite his relative lack of iRacing laps, Blaney says his goal for Sunday is the same as if he were going to be buckling into his real stock car.

“You want to win the race. Competitors are competitors no matter what they’re playing,” he said. “You want to win, so that’s why I’m practicing on Josh’s rig a little bit during this week to try and get a feel for it. You don’t want to go in there not knowing anything and make yourself look silly.

“You want to have a shot at it, so you want to try to win the race, but it’s also about having fun and hoping you don’t wreck anybody,” continued Blaney. “The stakes aren’t as high, but, at the end of the day, I believe it’s a good time for everyone.”

Fans can watch Sunday’s race live at 1:00 ET on Fox, FS1 and the Fox Sports app.

  • Elite Eight Set in #RoushMadness Search for Greatest RFR Driver

Elite Eight Set in #RoushMadness Search for Greatest RFR Driver

CONCORD, N.C, (March 24, 2020) – The search for the greatest driver in Roush Fenway Racing, according to the fans, is coming down to the wire as the Elite Eight matchups are set, with the tournament culminating on Friday.

    HOW WE GOT HERE
#RoushMadness got underway more than a week ago, as all 58 drivers to have taken the wheel for Jack Roush were put into a March Madness style bracket, with seeding determined by career starts in an RFR Ford. The top six seeds, including NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin and two-time NASCAR Champion Greg Biffle, received first-round byes.

    No. 1 Seeds Still Thriving
With the Sweet 16 in the rearview, all four No. 1 seeds – Martin, Matt Kenseth, Biffle and Carl Edwards – remain alive. Biffle took down No. 4 Jon Wood to advance, while Matt Kenseth defeated No. 5 Bubba Wallace.

No. 13 seed Kenny Wallace, who owns the closest margin of victory throughout the tournament in defeating No. 12 Ross Chastain by just 20 votes in the Round of 32, finally saw his tournament run come to an end, falling to Martin 81-19. Carl Edwards punched his ticket to the Elite 8 by defeating No. 5 Chris Buescher, 72-28.

    Bevy of Support for Newman
Ryan Newman carries the largest vote total thus far through #RoushMadness, with 3,502 votes cast, 1,000 more than the next-closest opponent.

He had an interesting road to the final eight, going up against No. 10 seed Austin Cindric, former #Program60 driver in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for Jack Roush. Newman handed Cindric the second-largest blowout of the tournament, 92-8, even getting votes from Cindric himself.

Buescher Falls to Quiet Edwards in Sweet 16
Chris Buescher handled his two opening matchups with ease, downing No. 12 Brian Ickler, 89-11, before going on to defeat Erik Darnell, 82-18. His tournament run came to an unfortunate end in the Sweet 16, where, despite his rallying of support on Twitter, he ultimately fell to Edwards.

Burton Uses Late Surge to Down Swindell
It was a hectic and nerve-wracking last few hours in the No. 2 (Jeff Burton) vs. No. 14 (Kevin Swindell) matchup in the Sweet 16, as Burton defeated Swindell by a 51-49 margin, which equates to just 58 votes. Swindell ended his tournament run with 2524 votes, second-most of any driver in the tournament.

Cup Car Numbers for Drivers Remaining
The famed No. 6 machine has the most drivers remaining of any Jack Roush owned car number, with Martin, David Ragan and Newman still on the board. Burton and Edwards represent the No. 99, Kenseth represents the No. 17, Biffle represents the No. 16, while Jamie McMurray is making the No. 26 proud.

    Shock of the Tournament
No. 15 Conor Daly pulled the upset of the tournament so far, defeating the No. 2 seed, Trevor Bayne, by a margin of 55-45. Daly used a bevy of Twitter fan support to pull the upset, before going on to ultimately fall to No. 7 seed Newman, also pledging his own vote for Newman.

    UP NEXT
The Elite Eight kicks off Tuesday with a Biffle-Ragan matchup, and a Kenseth-Burton battle. It continues Wednesday with Martin-Newman and Edwards-McMurray.

Newman-Martin Matchup One of a Kind
The Elite Eight matchup between 19-year veteran Ryan Newman and Hall of Famer Mark Martin stands as the lone one to feature two drivers who were never teammates under Jack Roush, as the remaining Elite Eight matchups all feature drivers who were, at one point, teammates with each other at Roush Fenway Racing.

Biffle and Ragan were teammates from 2006-11, Burton and Kenseth shared the driving stable from 1999-2004, while McMurray and Edwards were teammates from 2006-09.

    Newman Only Active Driver Remaining
The South Bend, Indiana, native also stands as the only remaining active NASCAR driver in the #RoushMadness Elite Eight, with No. 2 seed David Ragan announcing his retirement following the 2019 season.

  • Eventful Day for Roush Fenway in iRacing #ProInvitationalSeries

Eventful Day for Roush Fenway in iRacing #ProInvitationalSeries

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (March 22, 2020) – It was an eventful and drama-filled 100 laps in Sunday’s eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series race from the virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway, where Ross Chastain challenged his No. 6 Oscar Mayer Ford for the lead early before going on to finish 14th, while Chris Buescher and the No. 17 Fastenal Ford was caught up in a couple of late-race incidents to finish 28th.

Chastain rolled off from the fourth position after posting a quick lap early in Sunday’s qualifying session from the 1.5-mile track, while Buescher fired off 21st.

Chastain put the Oscar Mayer eFord up front and on camera early and often, running inside the top-five for the opening 25 laps. After a series of cautions to open the first quarter of the event, Chastain restarted fourth at lap 27 before being turned by the No. 24 machine, suffering heavy damage. He would use one of his two allowed resets on the day, and by lap 50 was back up to 14th.

With 40 to go, Chastain made a big strategy call with a fuel-only stop, which put him P2 on the restart with 34 to go. From there he got shuffled back just a bit but remained inside the top-10 with 10 to go, before going on to finish 14th.

Buescher had a somewhat unlucky day in his Fastenal eMachine, getting caught up in a multi-car incident early on. He was then assessed a penalty after reportedly passing a car under yellow, forcing him to start at the rear of the pack.

After a spin just after the halfway break, Buescher lined up 13th with 25 laps left but unfortunately was collected in another incident before going on to finish 28th.

Background on Sunday’s Dixie Vodka 150

While NASCAR’s on-track activity has been postponed through the weekend of May 3rd to align with CDC guidance, drivers and fans are turning to the virtual world to get their racing fix.

NASCAR and iRacing collaborated to create the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series – a sim racing exhibition format featuring some of the biggest names in the sport – which kicks off this weekend at iRacing’s virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway with the Dixie Vodka 150. The brick-and-mortar track in Miami was originally scheduled to host this weekend’s “real” NASCAR national series action.

The broadcast on FS1 and the FOX Sports app will feature FOX NASCAR broadcasters Jeff Gordon, Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds calling the action. They will be complimented by Clint Bowyer serving as the in-car analyst while competing from a simulator in the FOX NASCAR Charlotte studio.

Dixie Vodka and The NASCAR Foundation to support families in Miami

In conjunction with their sponsorship of the first race in the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series, Dixie Vodka is donating $10,000 to The NASCAR Foundation – which is centralizing charitable donations in the NASCAR industry to support those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Supporting our local communities, from buying from local vendors to linking up with regional nonprofits, has been part of our DNA since day one,” Grain & Barrel CEO and Dixie Vodka creator Matti Anttila said. “Never has that been more critical than in the crisis we all find ourselves in today. For that reason, we didn’t think twice about linking up with The NASCAR Foundation to help bring vital resources to feed the children South Florida, assisting those most in need in and around the home of the Dixie Vodka 400 and now, virtually, the Dixie Vodka 150. Working together as a sport and as a country I know we can overcome the enormous challenge we are facing today.”

Their donation, and those of drivers such as Denny Hamlin – who pledged, on Twitter, to donate $100 for every lap led and $5,000 if he wins the race – will be earmarked to assist Miami-area residents.

The NASCAR Foundation is working with Feed the Children to help families in the Miami area. Donations may be made at: NASCARFoundation.org/response.

Donations will be used to provide food staples, personal care items and educational materials for children as local schools close in the face of pandemic.

Tim Dugger to perform virtual pre-race concert for Dixie Vodka 150

Curb Records recording artist Tim Dugger will perform a virtual pre-race concert before the Dixie Vodka 150 as part of the opening race of the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series.

The first ever virtual pre-race concert will stream on Facebook.com/NASCAR and Twitter.com/NASCAR on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET, and be hosted by Alex Weaver, NASCAR.com’s digital host. The show will include a performance by Dugger and a visit from NASCAR driver, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.

    What is iRacing?

    Hamlin Conversation – Virtual Homestead:

How much will this Sunday’s iRace feel like real racing?

“The simulators are pretty realistic. We’ve all used them to help ourselves improve on some of the tracks and road courses over the years. It will feel just like I’m turning laps at Homestead-Miami Speedway.”

Obviously, a virtual race doesn’t replace on-track racing, but do you feel like this will help boost the mood of race fans?

“We sure hope so. You can’t replace the real thing, but fans will still be able to sit down and watch a race on TV on Sunday afternoon. The cars will all look realistic. I’ll be racing my FedEx Express Toyota, which looks just like the real race car. And even though it’s a virtual race, I’ll still be proud to represent FedEx. They’ve got nearly half a million team members working hard right now to keep critical shipments moving in a challenging time.”
