    ADVANCE NOTES

    Newman at Homestead-Miami Speedway
    ·         Newman will make his 18th career Cup start at Homestead on Sunday. In 17 prior events, he has an average finish of 16th with six top-10 results.
    ·        Two of those were top-five finishes – a third-place result in 2012 and a runner-up finish in the 2014 season finale. Newman finished sixth in his first-ever Cup race at Homestead back in 2002 and has finished seventh twice (2005, 2010).
    ·         The 2003 NASCAR Driver of the Year has an average starting position of 12.1 at the 1.5-mile track with eight top-10 starting spots in 17 races. Despite not earning a pole yet at HMS, Newman has started fourth or better on six occasions including two outside pole positions (2005, 2007).
    ·         Newman qualified eighth for this race a year ago, and has an average starting position of ninth in the past four events.
    ·         Newman does have a win in the Xfinity Series at Homestead, which came back in 2005 after winning from the pole. Overall he finished 11th or better in his four career NXS starts at the 1.5-mile facility.

    Scott Graves at Homestead-Miami Speedway
    ·         Graves will call his fourth MENCS race at Homestead this weekend. In three prior events he has a best finish of 22nd with Ricky Stenhouse Jr., in 2013.
    ·         Homestead is the site of one of Graves’ eight wins in the Xfinity Series. He led Daniel Suarez to a victory in the 2016 season finale after earning the pole and leading 133 laps. He also finished fifth (2014) and 11th (2015) with Chris Buescher prior to that.

    QUOTE WORTHY
    Newman on racing at Homestead:
“Heading into the last weekend of the year I’m certainly pleased with how we’ve done collectively on the 6 team. As expected, we had some growing pains early on, but I think we surprised a lot of people as the season progressed with our results. With that said we know we have more potential in us, and we’re looking forward to ending on a high note this weekend in Homestead to build some momentum entering the offseason.”

    Recapping Phoenix
After running just a couple spots outside the top-10 in Sunday’s race at Phoenix, Newman was caught speeding on pit road under green-flag conditions, which resulted in an 18th-place finish.

FORD PERFORMANCE NASCAR: HOMESTEAD-MIAMI PLAYOFF ADVANCE

The final weekend for NASCAR’s top three touring series is scheduled for this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway as Ford hosts Ford Championship Weekend for the 18th consecutive season. All three series champions will be crowned, beginning Friday with the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series and continuing with the NASCAR XFINITY Series on Saturday and Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday. Ford is the only manufacturer represented in the Championship 4 in all three series. Here’s a look at each of those title contenders.

    MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES

Ford leads all manufacturers with eight wins at Homestead-Miami Speedway, including last year when Joey Logano won the Ford EcoBoost 400 to claim the 2018 series championship. Greg Biffle started a stretch that saw Ford win five straight years when he took back-to-back-to-back victories from 2004-2006. Those three wins are the most for any Ford driver at the track. Carl Edwards won twice while Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth, and Logano one time apiece.

This will be the fifth time Harvick has competed for the championship in the six years this format has been in existence…Captured the title in 2014 after winning the Ford EcoBoost 400…That marks his only win in 18 career starts at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but he has 10 top-five and 16 top-10 efforts overall…He advanced after winning two weeks ago at Texas Motor Speedway.

    From the Driver’s Seat:

Matt DiBenedetto: “Looking ahead to this weekend, I think that Homestead should be one of the better races with this package, similar to how I thought that Kansas was with this package.  I consider it better in my mind when we’re able to move all around the track and that there isn’t necessarily a preferred lane, so it gives drivers more options when it comes to where we’re running.  The good thing about Homestead as well is that the track surface is a little more worn out, which makes it more fun for the drivers as well, so you should see the lap times fall off more similar to say you would see at a place like Texas.  A little bit of lap time falloff makes it fun for me and if you combine that with drivers having the opportunity to move around and change up their lanes, that makes it better as well in my opinion.  There are some unknowns though as we enter this weekend since we’re not entirely sure what we’ll experience at Homestead with this rules package.  Usually, the high lane is preferred, but I’m not really sure what we’ll see this weekend and I anticipate that possibly changing since we have less horsepower and so much more grip.  In years past at Homestead, we were sliding around there holding on, but it certainly won’t be like that anymore.  This year has been fun because the improvement we’ve experienced has been so much throughout this season that this group is disappointed in top-15’s, which is a nice problem to have.  Everyone on this No. 95 team has worked so hard to improve our overall car speed this year that it’s been fun to see the progression of how good our people are to build a team up to this point in just one year.”

    From the Pit Box:

Mike Wheeler: “Homestead is its own unique animal, however, it is the same tire for this coming weekend as we ran at Darlington as well as a similar track abrasion as both Darlington and Atlanta, so you will suffer some tire falloff as well as cars needing overall grip over the course of a run.  The closest track to Homestead that we ran at recently was probably Kansas, but that’s still a fairly high-grip track compared to how Homestead has typically been in the past.  Ultimately, no one really knows what we’re going to have for this weekend until we get down there because no one has been on track there this year.  I still feel that we’ll need to have enough grip in the car to run well over the course of a long run, and enough maneuverability to run a couple of different lanes since it’s always been a top groove racetrack.  The cars this year usually can’t follow each other in traffic because of the detrimental aero-balance you suffer in traffic.  You’ll need to have maneuverability to be able to be able to run a lane or two down as well in order to pass guys.  Homestead is a decent track where it’s provided lane options in the past, but usually over the course of the run, it ended up being the top groove along the wall was the fastest.  For restarts, and even for five or ten laps, you can kind of run the middle or the bottom lane, but generally the fastest guys are usually rim-riding the top.  This package is very different than what we’ve had in the past though with the low horsepower and high downforce, and you can’t follow someone’s tracks like you used to.  It was hard to pass on the long run at Homestead in the past because everyone was faster up top than the in the other grooves, but this package might allow for someone to move down into clean air to be better.  Some of the cars that qualify up front this weekend will not necessarily race the best.  Our game plan will be to make sure that our car handles well and has good grip for a 15-20 lap run.  Setting up our Camry for this weekend will be more than just three laps of speed.  It’s going to be about being able to race well and to have a well-balanced and maneuverable car.”

Ford Performance NASCAR: Pace Vehicle Lineup Set for Ford Championship Weekend

Mustang Shelby GT500, Explorer ST and F-150 Highlight Ford Championship Weekend Pace Vehicle Lineup

    • Three of America’s most popular vehicles will be on display this weekend at Ford Championship Weekend, representing different segments of the automotive industry.
    • The best-selling Ford-F-150, all-new Explorer ST and all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 will all serve as pace vehicles for one race each this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
    • This marks the 18th consecutive year Ford Championship Weekend has served as the event where NASCAR crowns champions in its three highest touring divisions.

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 12, 2019 – Three of the brightest stars in the Ford vehicle lineup will be prominently on display on track at Ford Championship Weekend beginning Friday as NASCAR crowns champions in its three major touring divisions at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 is set to lead the field to the green flag in Sunday’s Ford EcoBoost 400, where Ford driver Kevin Harvick will be looking to win the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship.

Before Sunday’s season finale, however, fans will get to see the Ford F-150, America’s best-selling pickup truck, pace the field in Friday night’s Ford EcoBoost 200. That will be followed by Ford Performance’s latest SUV, the all-new Explorer ST, leading the NASCAR XFINITY Series Ford EcoBoost 300 on Saturday afternoon.

“Ford Championship Weekend has always been one of the highlights of the year for Ford,” said Rob Johnston, global marketing manager, Ford Performance. “This is our opportunity to give race fans who attend in person a truly immersive experience with our vehicle lineup while those watching at home get to see three of the most popular vehicles on the road today at the front of the field.

“With the NASCAR schedule changing next year and the season-finale moving to Phoenix, this will be the 18th and final Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead,” added Johnston. “It’s been a tremendous event for us to interact with the NASCAR fan base all these years, and we want to give them one more great weekend with great products and great racing.”

The all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 figures to feel right at home on the 1.5-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway, being the most advanced Mustang ever built for the street, track or drag strip, producing 760 horsepower.

Ford F-150 is accustomed to being at the front of the field as well, having been America’s best-selling pickup truck for 42 consecutive years, and America’s best-selling vehicle for 36 consecutive years.

Explorer is America’s all-time best-selling SUV and Explorer ST takes the vehicle to a new level as the most powerful version to date with its specially tuned 3.0-liter EcoBoost® engine delivering 400 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. of torque.

Ford will have one driver competing for the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series championship as ThorSport Racing’s Matt Crafton qualified for the Championship 4 after a sixth-place finish last weekend in Phoenix. Crafton has won the series championship twice, but this would mark his first title with Ford.

Cole Custer advanced to his second straight Championship 4 in the NASCAR XFINITY Series after a second-place run on Saturday at ISM Raceway. Homestead-Miami Speedway has been a good track for Custer, who won his first series race in the Ford EcoBoost 300 in 2017 and then led Stewart-Haas Racing to its first owner’s championship in last year’s event.

Harvick advanced to the Championship 4 for the fifth time in the last six years with a victory at Texas Motor Speedway two weeks ago and will be going for his second career title. Since coming to Ford at the beginning of the 2017 season, Harvick has registered 14 wins.

“Our goal every season is to win the championship,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “We all know it comes down to one race at Homestead-Miami Speedway and we’re confident that the teams and drivers we have in the Championship Four can get the job done.”

This marks the 18th and final season all three of NASCAR’s top touring series will crown their champions at Ford Championship Weekend. That will change next year when ISM Raceway in Phoenix takes over as host site for the series finale.

Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing, Ford Customer Service Division Wrap up Banner Year This Weekend

    • New programs began and personal records were set in 2019 NHRA and NASCAR programs
    • Both programs used to attract and retain Ford and Lincoln automotive technicians
    • Races televised on NBC (NASCAR) and FS1 (NHRA)

DEARBORN, Mich. Nov. 12, 2019 – Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing ends a banner year this weekend as both its NHRA and NASCAR teams wrap up competition.

Records were set and new programs launched on the track and off. On the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series side, driver Paul Menard and longtime Motorcraft-sponsored Wood Brothers Racing finished in the top 10 five times, with a season-high sixth-place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Ford EcoBoost 400 will be the last race with the team for Menard, as he will step away at the end of the season to spend more time with his family.

“I am looking forward to getting down to Homestead and competing for the 100th win for the Wood Brothers,” Menard said. “While I don’t view this as my last race ever, I am happy to be ending my full-time NASCAR career with Wood Brothers Racing. It has been an honor to run the iconic No. 21 and join the list of legends that have driven for the oldest team in the sport. There are things I am going to miss, especially all the folks I’ve worked with and come to know through the years, but I am most looking forward to some family time.”

On the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series side, Bob Tasca III reset both ends of his career bests this year in a brand-new Ford Mustang Funny Car designed by Ford Performance. His personal records for time and speed on the 1,000-foot track now sit at 3.855 seconds (St. Louis) and 335.32 mph (Reading, Pa).

Tasca also broke the sound barrier during a ride along in an F-15 at Nellis Air Force Base in October just days after bringing standout crew chief Mike Neff in house fulltime. He shares tuning duties with Jon Schaffer, whom he’d worked with before.

Tasca and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team have two wins, two runners-up and four semifinal finishes so far this season in the NHRA Mello Yello Series. They are currently fifth in the playoff standings.

“When we look back, this is going to be a breakout year for us,” Tasca said. “The Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang is running on rails. I have all the confidence in the world in (Neff and Schaffer). Ford Performance did such a great job on this new Ford Mustang Funny Car body and we’re consistently going rounds on race day. I’m already looking forward to next year. I’ve never been so excited to be part of it.”

Off the track, Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD) launched one new initiative and expanded another. Heavy involvement in the NHRA Youth and Education Services (YES) program helped get the word out that Ford and Lincoln Dealerships have jobs to fill. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the automotive service technician industry will face a shortage of 45,000 technicians per year now through 2026.

More than 31,000 students have registered to attend YES events during the 2019 racing season, with one event yet to come this week in Pomona, Calif.

“The NHRA YES partnership is doing exactly what we hoped it would do,” said Jasmine Pendleton, Marketing Manager for FCSD. “It’s amazing to see all of the school busses roll in and know that every person on those busses could have a future with us. Bob is the perfect spokesperson for these initiatives. You can see he really connects with the students and believes in the message we’re bringing.”

Bringing in new technicians is one goal for Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing. FCSD addressed the other, retaining talent already there, by partnering with Ford Service Engineering Operations (Ford SEO) to host the “Motor City Homecoming” for Ford and Lincoln Automotive Service Technicians who had maintained Senior Master status for 20 years. Guests attended the August NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway, where they got to see their names of the sides of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang.

To become a Senior Master Tech, technicians complete 15 classroom courses, 57 online classes and must have five years of service at a Ford or Lincoln dealership. To maintain their Senior Master status, the technicians invited to the race had taken all new required training and two electives per year, for the last 20 years.

“Our goal with the 20-Year Senior Master event was to show how much we appreciate all of the hours these technicians have spent to reach the top of their field,” Pendleton said. “Bringing in new technicians is important, but having mentors already in place is just as important and we want to make sure we do what we can to help.”

The Auto Club NHRA Finals kicks off this Friday at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif. TV coverage begins with Friday Night Nitro Live from 5:30-7:30 p.m. ET Friday, Nov. 15 and continues on race day from 3-7 p.m. ET Sunday, also on FS1.

Coverage from the FordEcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17 on NBC, MRN and on the NBC Sports app.

Speedway Motorsports Receives 2019 President’s Veterans Recognition Award from Coca-Cola

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Nov. 11, 2019) – In honor of its unwavering commitment to saluting the United States Armed Forces, Speedway Motorsports was named the recipient of the 2019 President’s Veterans Recognition Award from Coca-Cola.

The prestigious award was presented at The Coca-Cola Company’s annual Veterans Day Celebration in Atlanta to Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith, who accepted the accolades on behalf of Speedway Motorsports’ eight world-class motorsports entertainment facilities: Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Sonoma Raceway and Texas Motor Speedway.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive the President’s Veterans Recognition Award from such an organization as well-respected as Coca-Cola,” Smith said. “Our company prides itself on offering unmatched experiences for veterans, active-duty military guests and their families. Our initiatives are simply an effort to say ‘thank you’ to our heroes in the U.S. Armed Forces. Because of what they do, we get to do what we do. This award is a credit to the never-ending support for our military from the Speedway Motorsports family, and we are humbled by this recognition.”

Among Speedway Motorsports’ military support programs, the newly created Welcome Home Patriots initiative is designed to improve the lives of servicemen and servicewomen after active duty. The program salutes, engages and enables members of the U.S. Armed Forces as they transition to civilian life. Additionally, Speedway Motorsports offers military discounts at all eight venues and promotes discounted ticket purchases at Charlotte Motor Speedway through the speedway’s unique Patriot Partners program – which has distributed more than 100,000 NASCAR event tickets to military bases and the USO since the program’s inception in 2010.

As part of an unrivaled pre-race spectacle prior to the iconic Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend, Charlotte Motor Speedway hosts the nation’s largest military salute with thousands of active-duty troops and family members representing all five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces in attendance. The salute annually includes unique experiences including pre-race military exercise demonstrations, a 600-troop march and Gold Star family hospitality. In 2019, the speedway also hosted ‘Mission 600’, an interactive series of educational visits by Coca-Cola Racing Family drivers Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon, Bubba Wallace, Ryan Newman and Denny Hamlin to mid-Atlantic regional military bases.

“Speedway Motorsports is a leader in serving those who serve. They do incredible work to support service members and veterans of our U.S. Armed Forces,” said Jim Dinkins, president, Coca-Cola North America. “We have a long history of partnering together on events like the Coca-Cola 600, and it’s an honor to celebrate their accomplishments with this award.”

Additional Speedway Motorsports military initiatives include New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s Send a Soldier program – which provides soldiers with tickets to New Hampshire’s races – as well as Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Folds of Honor-sponsored NASCAR race and recognition of the Folds of Honor Military Scholarship recipient.

Texas Motor Speedway annually hosts a First Responder and Military Appreciation Night for the July 4 holiday weekend, while Kentucky Speedway has donated significant funding to the USO as well as partnered with the Kentucky National Guard and branches of the U.S. Armed Forces to salute military members on race weekends.

Among other initiatives, Bristol Motor Speedway’s long-standing relationship with the Tennessee Army National Guard led to honoring one of their soldiers with a trip to America’s Night Race and a pre-event lunch with hundreds of his peers in Nashville. The short track also honors veterans through its “Prisoner of War Chair” near the start finish line flag stand that sits empty at all times to honor those military members who never returned from their duty.

Sonoma Raceway, honored veterans during its June NASCAR race weekend by hosting a large display featuring vintage U.S. military tanks, while more than 3,000 veterans and their families attended each of Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s NASCAR weekends through its Welcome Home Troops program in 2019. The speedway also hosted swearing-in ceremonies for new U.S. Air Force recruits at each event.

Collectively, the speedways also express exemplary support of the U.S. Armed Forces through military flyovers, static displays and band performances along with employment of veterans and National Guard members on NASCAR race weekends.

Speedway Motorsports is the first sports entertainment company to receive the President’s Veterans Recognition Award in the 20 years it has been presented.

Hamlin and Busch will race Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick for the championship next Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Hamlin started third and worked his way to the lead at the end of Stage 1 to take the segment win. He was battling Busch and Joey Logano in points for the final Playoff transfer spots, and with both competitors earning stage points, Hamlin knew he had to win to advance. He finished second in Stage 2 and then lined up in that position alongside Logano for the final segment. Hamlin passed Logano on Lap 177 and opened up more than a 10-second lead on the field during a long green flag run. A late-race caution set up the final dash to the finish line. Hamlin now has six wins and 19 top-five finishes in 35 races this season.

No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Mustang – Brad Keselowski
    Start: 12th
    Stage 1: 6th
    Stage 2: 9th
    Finish: 10th
    Status: Running
    Laps Completed: 312/312
    Laps Led: 3
Driver Point Standings (behind first): 8th (-2701)

    Notes:

Brad Keselowski fought off a late-race mechanical gremlin to score a 10th-place finish Sunday afternoon at ISM Raceway. The driver of the Miller Lite Holiday Knitwear Ford Mustang claimed his 19th top-10 finish of the 2019 season and 10th at the one-mile oval. Keselowski enters the final race of the 2019 season eighth in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings, four behind seventh-place Ryan Blaney and 29 ahead of ninth-place William Byron.

Keselowski started 12th in the 312-lap event. For much of Stage 1, the driver of the No. 2 Ford Mustang held firm to 11th-place in the running order. The first caution of the race on lap 68 set up a round of pit stops among the leaders, but crew chief Paul Wolfe made the call to keep his driver on the track. Keselowski took the lead on lap 70 and scored a sixth-place finish when the segment ended on lap 75. He pitted on lap 79 for four tires and an air pressure adjustment and lined up in 17th position when the race went green on lap 82.

Stage 2 ran caution-free and Keselowski steadily worked his way through traffic to score a ninth-place finish when the segment ended on lap 150. Throughout the run Keselowski ran lap times comparable to the leaders but just needed track position to contend. He pitted during the stage caution for four tires and restarted 10th when the race went green on lap 159.

Keselowski worked his way up to seventh-place when a cycle of green flag pit stops began on lap 240. He made his scheduled pit stop for four tires on lap 246 and when he returned to the track, he radioed his team that he thought he was down a cylinder. As the laps ticked off, he thought it might be loose plug wire.

But despite the loss of power, Keselowski stayed among the top-10. As the run went on, the lap times between himself and those he was racing for position evened out and he kept pace. The fifth and final caution on lap 304 set up one final crazy restart with four laps to go. He survived the intense three-wide racing to claim a top-10 finish.

Quotes: “I don’t know if I had anything for the 11 (Denny Hamlin) or 18 (Kyle Busch). I didn’t really get a chance to run around them on equal tires, but I felt like we were a top three or four car at least and lost a cylinder at the end. I felt lucky to bring home 10th. The tracks where tires fall off and the short tracks the Gibbs cars have been lights out, so we certainly have some room to be better and hopefully we can show it at Homestead.”

No. 12 DEX Imaging Ford Mustang – Ryan Blaney
    Start: 10th
    Stage 1: 7th
    Stage 2: 5th
    Finish: 3rd
    Status: Running
    Laps Completed: 312/312
    Laps Led: 0
Point Standings (behind first): 7th (-2679)

    Notes:

A valiant effort by Ryan Blaney and No. 12 DEX Imaging team came up just short of qualifying for the Championship 4 next week at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The High Point, N.C. native ran inside the top-five for most of the day but was in a must-win situation to keep his championship hopes alive. A late-race caution eight laps from the finish set up a three-lap dash to the checkered flag with Blaney restarting second. Try as he might, the driver of the DEX Imaging Ford couldn’t find a way around Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch settling for a third-place finish. He enters the final race of the 2019 season seventh in NASCAR Cup Series standings, 18 points behind sixth-place Kyle Larson.

Blaney started 10th and reported early the balance of his Ford Mustang was tight firing off and got looser on entry as the run progressed. He passed Erik Jones ninth and eventually got around Kurt Busch for eighth on lap 52. On lap 68, just seven laps from the conclusion of Stage 1 the first caution of the day flew. Crew chief Jeremy Bullins pitted for four tires and an air pressure adjustment. Restarting 11th, Blaney sliced his way through traffic to bring home a seventh place in Stage 1. He stayed out under the stage caution and restarted sixth on lap 82.

Stage 2 ran caution-free and Blaney said the balance on the DEX Imaging Ford was improved over the first run, yet he needed more rear security, especially off Turn 2. He passed Hamlin and Kevin Harvick on the restart to move his up to fourth position. Later in the run Hamlin passed Blaney for fourth position. From there Blaney fell in line and finished fifth when the stage concluded on lap 150. He pitted during the stage caution for four tires and additional air pressure adjustments to the No. 12 Ford and restarted fifth when the race went green.

As laps ticked off in the run, Blaney reported that the overall balance of his Ford Mustang had improved but soon it would begin to lose front turn. He passed teammate Joey Logano for third on lap 203 and set his sights on leader Hamlin and second-place Kyle Busch. Blaney made a scheduled stop under green on lap 244 for four tires and another air pressure adjustment. When the cycle of green flag pit stops was complete, he was back in third position.

The final caution on lap 304, just eight laps from the conclusion of the event, gave Blaney one last chance to win. He pitted for two right-side tires. Quick work by the DEX Imaging team got gave him second position for the final restart.

Blaney started inside Hamlin for the three-lap dash to the finish. But try as he might, Blaney simply couldn’t pass Hamlin for the lead or hold off Busch for second, forcing him to settle for third at the checkered flag. This was Blaney’s 11th top-five finish of 2019.

Quote: “I thought we got better all day with our DEX Imaging Ford. We did a good job of getting better on long runs all day and the short runs too. We passed a couple cars we were behind the first couple runs, but nowhere near in the league, especially the No. 11 (Hamlin). I’m proud of our group not only for today but for the entire playoff runs. It stinks we didn’t make it, but it was a solid day.”

No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Mustang – Joey Logano
    Start: 2nd
    Stage 1: 4th
    Stage 2: 1st
    Finish: 9th
    Status: Running
    Laps Completed: 312/312
    Laps Led: 93
Point Standings (behind first): 5th (-2656)

    Notes:

Joey Logano started second and led 93 laps on his way to a ninth-place finish in the Bluegreen Vacations 500 Sunday afternoon at ISM Raceway. But despite the tremendous effort by the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil team, it wasn’t enough to advance the defending series champion back to the Championship 4 in next week’s season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, falling just seven points short.

Logano ran in the second position for the opening six laps before sliding back to the third position on lap 7. The Shell-Pennzoil Mustang took off tight but started building to a neutral balance by lap 10. Over the course of the run, the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford built loose and then swung back to a tight condition as the front tires began wearing out. The second caution on lap 68 slowed the pace with just seven laps to go in Stage 1. Todd Gordon made the call to pit during the caution for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. Logano restarted fifth moved up to fourth-place when the stage ended on lap 75.

He restarted fourth when the race went green on lap 82 and grabbed the lead one lap later. Logano led the next 71 laps to win Stage 2 and stretched his advantage to over three seconds at one point. The balance on the No. 22 Mustang was now loose, especially in Turns 3 and 4. He remained in the lead as his Ford was looser in and tighter in the center of the corners throughout the entire run.

After Denny Hamlin led lap 154, Logano grabbed the lead on lap 155 and led the 22 laps, checking out to a one-second lead before a caution flag on lap 167 for Chase Elliott’s spin in Turn 1. Logano relinquished the lead on the restart to Hamlin, and dropped behind Kyle Busch on lap 188, which moved him beneath the Championship 4 cutline.

Unfortunately, Logano continued to fall back through the field. He was 11th on lap 224 and then went one lap down to race leader Hamlin. The team was forced to continue running under green due to maintaining their position as the free pass should the caution flag be displayed. Gordon called Logano to pit road on lap 246 for potentially the final stop of the race. The driver reported his Mustang was too tight during the run. The adjustments proved to be positive as Logano began running down the race leader to unlap himself.

But with 17 laps remaining, Logano fell out of the free pass position when Hamlin lapped the eighth place Erik Jones. The final caution on lap 304 kept Logano trapped a lap down but created a variety of pit strategies among those in contention. He and the team elected to take the wave around, regaining their lap and rejoining the field before the green. With old tires, Logano couldn’t make up the necessary ground to transfer. The No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Mustangs was credited with a ninth-place finish.

Quote: “It’s a disappointing result. We wanted to be in the hunt during Ford Championship weekend, but at the end of the day we didn’t quite get it done. We still had a good year and in times like this you look for ways to get stronger as a team and this is certainly one of those times. This is a great group of guys. We’ve been together a long time and we’ll come back next year even stronger. We’ll go down to Homestead and look to close the year out with a win.”

  • Stenhouse Jr. Recovers From Blown Tire to Earn 19th-Place Finish at ISM Raceway

Stenhouse Jr. Recovers From Blown Tire to Earn 19th-Place Finish at ISM Raceway

AVONDALE, Ariz. (Nov. 10, 2019) – After blowing a right front tire early in Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) race at ISM Raceway, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. overcame adversity to score a 19th-place finish in his NOS Energy Drink Ford.

“We just struggled all weekend honestly,” Stenhouse said. “We could never really get the right handling on our NOS Energy Drink Ford. I’m still proud of my guys has they never gave up despite going a lap down due to the tire issue. I’m looking forward to Homestead next week and finishing my season out strong,”

After lining up in the 24th position for the 312-lap race, the two-time Xfinity champion patiently maneuvered his way forward picking up six positions by lap 49 despite having radio issues. Stenhouse could hear crew chief Brian Pattie and spotter Mike Herman Jr. but the team was unable to hear him. Unfortunately, the first caution flag was displayed due to Stenhouse blowing a right front tire.

Crew chief Brian Pattie immediately called him to pit-road for four tires, pull the fenders, and hopefully fix the radio issues. When the race went back green, Stenhouse was scored in the 32nd position, one lap down. When the first green checkered waved, the Roush Fenway Racing driver was scored in the 30th position.

With a caution free stage two, Stenhouse was able to gain three additional positions despite battling a tight machine taking the second green checkered in the 27th position.

When the caution flag waved on lap 166, Stenhouse’s perseverance paid off edging out Alex Bowman by a nose length to earn the lucky dog position to get back on the lead lap. Crew chief Brian Pattie called the Olive Branch, Miss. native to pit-road for four tires, fuel, and to make sure all the fenders were cleared. Stenhouse steadily worked his way forward and was shown in the 18th position when the caution flag waved on lap 303 setting up a three-lap shootout.

After staying out and taking the wave around, Stenhouse lined up in the 18th position but with three and four wide racing to the finish, Stenhouse was forced to settle with a 19th-place finish at ISM Raceway.

Next up for Stenhouse and the No. 17 team is the Ford Ecoboost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday Nov. 17. Race coverage begins at 2:30 p.m. (EST) on NBC. Coverage can also be heard on MRN and NASCAR SIRIUS/XM radio channel 90.
