    Larson Works Overtime To Win Dramatic Brickyard 400 in Return to Oval

    INDIANAPOLIS (Sunday, July 21, 2024) – Less than two months separated agony from ecstasy for Kyle Larson at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

    Larson left IMS on May 26 disappointed after finishing 18th in his first Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge start after qualifying fifth and leading four laps in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” On Sunday, Larson stood triumphantly on Victory Podium and kissed the fabled Yard of Bricks after completing a wild climb to an overtime victory in the Brickyard 400 presented by PPG.

    “This is just such a prestigious place, such hallowed ground,” Larson said. “Pretty neat just to get an opportunity to race here on the oval again. What a job by our team. Never gave up at all. We just fought and dug and had things work out.

    “I love all you Indiana fans, and I know you guys love me, too. How about we come back next May and try to kiss these bricks in an Indy car? I think everything comes full circle, and everything’s meant to be. And today definitely felt meant to be for us.”

    Larson, who started fifth, won the race under caution in the No. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM Chevrolet on the second attempt in overtime. Pole sitter Tyler Reddick finished second in the No. 45 The Beast Unleashed Toyota. Reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney finished third in the No. 12 Menards/Atlas Ford fielded by IMS owner Roger Penske’s team.

    2021 Cup Series champion Larson earned the record-extending 11th Brickyard 400 victory for Hendrick Motorsports on a day in which team chairman Rick Hendrick led the field to the green flag as the honorary driver of the Chevrolet Camaro Pace Car.

    This was the first win on the iconic 2.5-mile oval for Larson, as the Brickyard 400 returned to that circuit for the first time since 2020 after three years on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course at the Racing Capital of the World. But it was the second IMS victory for Larson, who won the Driven2SaveLives BC39 USAC Midget race in 2021 on The Dirt Track at IMS, a quarter-mile dirt oval inside Turn 3.

    Larson’s path to victory was paved by equal parts of aggression and good luck. He drove his way through the field after his last pit stop on Lap 123, slicing up and down the entire width of racing surface to gain ground on the leaders.

    He took advantage of fresher tires than the leaders to reach the top five by passing Denny Hamlin on Lap 148 and climbed to fourth by passing Zane Smith on Lap 149. By then, Larson latched onto the rear bumper of Daniel Hemric’s No. 31 Cirkul Chevrolet. 2018 Brickyard 400 winner Brad Keselowski led in the No. 6 Body Guard Ford, with Blaney second.

    But Keselowski made his previous pit stop on Lap 102, and his fuel-saving efforts appeared to maybe need more caution laps to try and stretch to the finish at the regulation distance. That gamble rolled snake eyes when Kyle Busch’s No. 8 Cheddar’s Patriotic Chevrolet and Hamlin’s No. 11 Sport Clips Haircuts Toyota made side-to-side contact in Turn 3 on Lap 158, triggering a caution that forced overtime.

    As the field lined up to take the green flag for the first overtime restart on Lap 162, Keselowski took the inside lane, with Blaney to his outside and Larson behind Keselowski in third. But Keselowski’s car began to run out of gas, and he dove into the pits. Larson moved from third to first in the restart order in the inside lane and powered past Blaney in Turn 1 on Lap 162, taking a lead he would never lose.

    “I knew the 6 (Keselowski) was probably going to run out if it went green, and at the restart, I couldn’t believe they stayed out,” Blaney said. “I knew there was no way they were going to make it, so I obviously chose the top (lane) because he might run out in the restart zone. And he runs out coming to the green, so he gets to go to pit road and the 5 (Larson) gets promoted. Luck of the day right there, I guess.”

    But there still was more drama. As Larson gapped Blaney in the short chute between Turns 1 and 2 on the restart, a five-car chain reaction collision occurred at the end of the front straightaway and in Turn 1. That triggered another caution and then a red flag lasting 17 minutes to straighten a concrete barrier at the exit of pit road moved by contact in the incident.

    Larson’s car needed a bump start from a tow truck on the front straightaway to restart after the red flag period ended. At the restart on Lap 166, Larson and Blaney made side-to-side contact before Turn 1, with Larson pulling ahead and staying out front down the back straightaway. Meanwhile, the No. 41 HaasTooling.com Ford of Ryan Preece spun in Turn 2 and was mired in the infield grass in Turn 2.

    The field continued to race under green, with Larson taking the white flag in the lead on Lap 167. Preece tried to drive his car out of the grass but couldn’t due to a flat tire, and the caution flag flew to end the race. Larson had enough fuel to cruise around and take the checkered.

    “With the way the strategy was working out, with Brad running out of fuel and me inheriting the front row and all that, just a lot had to fall into place,” Larson said. “Thankfully it did. I just can’t believe it. It’s surreal to win here.”

    Reddick, who led a race-high 40 laps, passed Blaney on the last lap to take second place.

    INDIANAPOLIS (Saturday, July 20, 2024) – NASCAR’s return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval was worth the wait, if Riley Herbst’s thrilling victory Saturday in the Pennzoil 250 presented by Advance Auto Parts was any indication.

    Herbst prevailed in a wild final two laps to win the first NASCAR Xfinity Series race on the fabled 2.5-mile oval since 2019, edging Cole Custer and Aric Almirola to open race competition on Brickyard Weekend. The NASCAR Cup Series will race on the oval for the first time since 2020 with the Brickyard 400 presented by PPG at 2:30 p.m. ET Sunday.

    “This is Indianapolis; this is the most famous racetrack in the world,” Herbst said. “It’s an honor just to walk in this place, let alone win.

    “This is hallowed ground. Every person in the world wants to race here, and I won here. I don’t care if it’s the Xfinity Series, the Cup Series, the go-kart track out back, this is the Brickyard. This is the coolest racetrack in the world. This is pretty sweet.”

    Herbst, who started second in the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford, held off Stewart-Haas Racing teammate and pole sitter Cole Custer by .167 of a second for his second career Xfinity Series victory. Almirola was third in the No. 20 He Gets Us Toyota of Joe Gibbs Racing, .224 of a second behind the winner after a sizzling three-way fight for the lead on the last two laps of the 100-lap race.

    The 1-2 finish for Stewart-Haas Racing – co-owned by two-time Brickyard 400 winner Tony Stewart and Gene Haas – was bittersweet as the team is disbanding after this season.

    “Proud of everybody at Stewart-Haas Racing,” Herbst said. “Obviously, the news of us shutting down, these guys could have given up on me, gone to other teams, but they stuck behind me and Cole.”

    Herbst lost the lead to Custer on a restart on Lap 90, and it appeared Custer might cruise to victory. He built a lead of 1.384 seconds by Lap 95. But Herbst began to chip away, trimming that lead to .649 of a second on Lap 97 and .270 of a second on Lap 98.

    Almirola also was gaining ground on the two leaders and took the lead on the front straightaway at the end of Lap 99 on a breathtaking move with the white flag in the air. Herbst and Custer were racing side-by-side for the lead low on the straightaway, and Almirola moved within inches of the wall to clear the dueling pair and slice down across the noses of their Fords for the top spot.

    On the final lap, Herbst chased Almirola, dove under him for the lead in the short chute between Turns 3 and 4 and held on to the checkered flag. It was the last of 12 lead changes in the race.

    “When he (Herbst) was within a car length or so from behind, I was just so tight,” Almirola said of his car’s handling. “I got to the bottom, but I was just so tight. They were the class of the field. They ran the 00 (Custer) down. Those two cars were certainly better than us.”

    Herbst and Custer combined to lead 77 of the 100 laps, with Custer out front for a race-high 47 and Herbst 30.

    Indianapolis 500 veteran Conor Daly finished 14th in the No. 26 Polkadot Toyota of Sam Hunt Racing after running in the top 10 for a portion of the race.

    In two rounds of qualifying for the Brickyard 400 presented by PPG, Tyler Reddick continued the strong form he showed in leading practice Friday by winning the pole for the 160-lap NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday.

    Reddick turned a top lap of 181.932 mph in the No. 45 The Beast Unleashed Toyota of 23XI Racing, co-owned by basketball superstar Michael Jordan and Cup Series star Denny Hamlin. This is Reddick’s second Cup Series pole at IMS, as he won the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard from the pole in 2022 on the IMS road course.

    This is the first time the NASCAR Cup Series has raced its Next Gen car, which debuted in 2022, on the IMS oval. The Cup Series last raced on the fabled oval in 2020.

    “Round two, I knew what the target lap time was,” Reddick said. “I did not feel great about my Turn 1, but the rest of the lap this The Beast Unleashed Toyota Camry was really stout.

    “It’s really cool. I’ve been very fortunate to come here and have a lot of speed on the road course, and it’s great to be back on the oval here and have that speed again. Excited for tomorrow.”

    Reddick’s boss, Hamlin, qualified second at 181.492 in the No. 11 Sport Clips Haircuts Toyota of Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin seeks his first Brickyard 400 start in his 16th start on the IMS oval.

    2020 Cup Series champion Chase Elliott will start third in the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet fielded by Hendrick Motorsports after his best lap of 181.803. Teammate William Byron will join him in Row 2 after his qualifying lap of 180.155 in the No. 24 Valvoline Chevrolet.

    2021 Cup Series champion Kyle Larson helped Hendrick Motorsports put three cars in the top five qualifying spots with his best lap of 181.298 in the No. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM Chevrolet. Larson is racing on the IMS oval for the second time this season, as he earned Rookie of the Year honors in the 108th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge after qualifying fifth and finishing 18th in a Hendrick-Arrow McLaren entry.

    Ty Gibbs filled Row 3 after qualifying sixth at 180.043 in the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota of Joe Gibbs Racing.

    Tyler Reddick roars to thrilling Brickyard 400 pole at Indianapolis

    Tyler Reddick raced his way to a monstrous Busch Light Pole Award for the return of the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 20.

    The two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion from Corning, California, made early head waves by being the fastest during the first round of on-track qualifying and within his Group A qualifying group, where he was one of 10 overall to transfer into the final round and contend for the pole position.

    Once in the final round, Reddick, who was the 10th and final competitor to post a qualifying lap, managed to post the fastest-qualifying lap at 181.932 mph in 49.469 seconds. The qualifying lap was enough to knock off team owner Denny Hamlin off the top of the chart by 0.012 seconds.

    With his accomplishment, Reddick, driver of the No. 45 The Beast Unleashed Toyota Camry XSE for 23XI Racing and who was the fastest during Friday’s practice session, clinched his eighth NASCAR Cup Series career pole, his second of the season, his first since doing so at Darlington Raceway in May and his second overall at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

    Ironically, Reddick’s first Indianapolis pole occurred in 2022 when the Cup Series’ competitors were racing on the venue’s road-course circuit. During the main event, Reddick would proceed to win and emerge as one of three competitors overall to win a Cup event on Indy’s road-course circuit as he attempts to become the first competitor to win at Indianapolis both on the road course and oval overall.

    “I feel like [today’s pole]’s equal of importance, for sure,” Reddick, who compared his first pole at Indy in 2022 to today, said in the media center. “I knew we had to be really close to perfect today. I still wasn’t, honestly, but we did a good enough job the rest of the other three corners to be able to capture [the pole]. I feel like both [poles] are just as important as the other in regards to the race the following day. It’s a great thing that we were able to accomplish today.”

    Despite being guaranteed a spot into the 2024 Cup Series Playoffs based off of winning at Talladega Superspeedway in April, Reddick, who is currently ranked in third place in this year’s regular-season standings and trails points leader Chase Elliott by 15 points, continues to keep his eyes squared on the prize and against his fellow competitors for the remaining regular-season events on the schedule, starting with a potential crown-jewel victory on Indy’s oval-shaped circuit.

    “We got a good opportunity in front of us, but we know that a lot of the guys that are right there behind us are really good at making adjustments and doing what they need to do,” Reddick added. “We have to be mindful of all potentials of how the race unfolds.”

    Reddick will share the front row with Denny Hamlin, Reddick’s owner at 23XI Racing who ended up with the second-fastest qualifying lap at 181.492 mph in 49.589 seconds.

    Chase Elliott, the 2020 Cup Series champion, will line up in third place and he will share the second row with teammate William Byron. Kyle Larson, who attempted the Memorial Day double duty role in May and finished 18th in this year’s 108th running of the Indianapolis 500, will start in fifth place and line up next to Ty Gibbs on the third row. Ironically, Larson also qualified in fifth place during his Indy 500 bid.

    Ryan Blaney, Michael McDowell, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and John Hunter Nemechek, all of whom transferred into the final round of qualifying, will line up from seventh to 10th, respectively, while Austin Dillon and Joey Logano will follow suit on the starting grid in the top 12.

    Notably, Austin Cindric ended up in 38th place on the starting grid due to making significant contact with the outside wall during his qualifying lap.

    All 39 Cup competitors entered for this weekend’s main event made the show.

    Reigning NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion Will Drive No. 41 Ford Mustang with Sponsorship from Haas Automation and Technical Support From RFK Racing

    SPEEDWAY, Ind. (July 20, 2024) – In a press conference Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Cole Custer announced his return to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2025 with Haas Factory Team.

    The 26-year-old racer from Ladera Ranch, California, will drive the No. 41 Ford Mustang Dark Horse with sponsorship from Haas Automation and HaasTooling.com. It was also announced that Haas Factory Team will have a technical alliance with RFK Racing and receive additional support from Ford Performance.

    Custer is the reigning NASCAR Xfinity Series champion and current Xfinity Series point leader who secured his spot in the NASCAR Playoffs with a victory last Saturday at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway. His move to Haas Factory Team in 2025 brings Custer back to the NASCAR Cup Series, where he was the 2020 Rookie of the Year and a race winner in just his 20th career start – July 12, 2020 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.

    “Cole has represented Haas Automation for more than half his life and he’s delivered results every step of the way. He just wins, and he’s proven that repeatedly,” said Gene Haas, founder and president of Haas Automation and the owner of Haas Factory Team.

    “On his way to winning the Xfinity Series championship last year, Cole really carved out an identity for himself, on the track and off. He brings home trophies and he races people clean. He’s earned a lot of respect from his peers, and he’s a genuine personality whose hard work resonates with our customers.

    “The NASCAR Cup Series is tough, but Cole is coming back wiser and tougher. We’re very happy to have him in our colors and in our racecar.”

    Custer first won for Haas Automation nearly 13 years ago when he earned the 2011 USAC National Focus Young Guns Championship. In the 22 victories he has earned since across the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, ARCA Menards Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Xfinity Series and Cup Series, all have come while representing Haas Automation.

    “I’ve grown up with Haas Automation, and having their name on my firesuit is something I take a tremendous amount of pride in. I’m driven to win for Gene and everyone at Haas Automation because they’ve been such a big part of my career,” Custer said.

    “Haas Factory Team will essentially be a new race team next year, and it’s going to take all of us to build it into an organization that can go out and win races. I want this opportunity and I’m ready for this challenge.”

    Before Custer sets his sights on 2025, he will continue his title defense in the Xfinity Series. Fourteen races still remain this season, with Saturday afternoon’s 62-lap race around Indianapolis’ 2.5-mile rectangular oval next up for Custer and his Xfinity Series counterparts.     Race to be part of doubleheader event featuring NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship finale

    MARTINSVILLE, Va. (July 17, 2024) – Martinsville Speedway and the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin today announced that the spec series will hold an exhibition race as part of the 2024 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season finale event on Saturday, Oct. 26.

    The event will be a 300-lap doubleheader called the ‘Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300’ with the Mazda MX-5 Cup taking to the track for 100 laps, directly followed by the 200-lap finale of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship. The race will award $15,000 to the Mazda MX-5 Cup race winner.

    The exhibition event will not count toward the 2024 Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship, which concludes Oct. 11 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. It will consist of two practice sessions, single-car qualifying, and a 100-lap race split into two stages. Yellow flags will not count for the first 50-lap stage, but will be in effect for the second half. Prize money will also be awarded to the top three drivers at the stage break.

    “It’s a great compliment to Mazda MX-5 Cup that NASCAR and IMSA leadership enjoy the series and want to expand its footprint,” said Jonathan Applegate, Senior Manager, Mazda Motorsports. “We’ve seen increased interest in the series from drivers with NASCAR aspirations who want to grow their skill set.     The concept of racing Mazda MX-5 Cup at Martinsville started amongst NASCAR and IMSA leadership, who recognized the entertainment value of the series’ incredibly close racing. Martinsville, the short track, was deemed a perfect fit for the small convertibles and a test featuring several drivers was conducted in August of last year.

    “Martinsville Speedway has such a unique and rich history of racing, and we couldn’t be more excited to add another incredible event to that history,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “It’ll be the first time we have open top cars racing on track since our early days in the 50s, tapping into our past and also our roots as we host the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour finale on the same weekend.     The Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 will be the first ever race on an oval circuit for MX-5 Cup, though it has held events at roval tracks familiar to NASCAR fans, including Daytona International Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

    Entries are open for all racers and are not limited to MX-5 Cup or IMSA drivers and teams.

    In addition to a $15,000 check from Mazda for the winner, Martinsville will award one of their famous grandfather clocks as well. Runner-up receives $5,000, third place receives $4,000 and payouts continue through 10th place.

    To prepare for this unique race, MX-5 Cup will hold a test at Martinsville on Monday, Aug. 26. The date is exceptionally convenient for MX-5 Cup teams who will have just concluded a doubleheader at VIRginia International Raceway, an hour’s drive away.

    INDIANAPOLIS (Wednesday, July 17, 2024) – Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports and chairman and CEO of Hendrick Automotive Group, will serve as honorary Pace Car driver for the Brickyard 400 presented by PPG on Sunday, July 21.

    Hendrick will drive the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Pace Car and lead the field to start the 30th anniversary of the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of Hendrick Motorsports.

    A self-described “gearhead,” Hendrick turned his passion for the automobile into successful business ventures in the retail automotive and professional auto racing industries.

    Hendrick worked on and raced cars as a young man. Alongside his father, “Papa Joe” Hendrick, he rebuilt his first car, a 1931 Chevrolet, at age 14 and regularly traveled to racetracks across the region, often volunteering as a crew member. Although he studied to become a tool and die maker, Hendrick’s enthusiasm for cars led him down a different career path – retail automotive sales.

    The transformation of his first dealership from struggling into the most profitable in the region ultimately led to the formation of Hendrick Automotive Group, which today operates collision centers, accessories distributor installers and 131 retail franchises across 13 states.

    Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney, whose first Cup Series victory came at Pocono Raceway in 2017, added another Sunday for his second victory of the season.

    LONG POND, Pa. (July 14, 2024) – It may have been a different Victory Lane and team when Ryan Blaney won at Pocono Raceway seven years ago, but the feeling of elation was the same Sunday after winning The Great American Getaway 400 presented by VISITPA NASCAR Cup Series race.

    Before a sold-out crowd for the second consecutive year, Blaney fended off last week’s winner Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports and then seven-time Pocono winner Denny Hamlin in the waning laps of the 160-lap, 400-mile race to become a two-time winner at “The Tricky Triangle.” His other win – the first of his Cup Series career – came in 2017 while driving for the Wood Brothers.

    “I really think it’s just special. I feel like every win is very special,” Blaney said. “You have to cherish them. You never know when the next one is going to come. Hard to believe it’s been seven years since I won the first time here. Time definitely flies. Like I said, different Victory Lane. I think this Victory Lane is pretty neat. All the fans being there, giving them an experience, too.

    “I feel like you approach it a little bit differently seven years later. It was cool that I got my 12th win in the 12 car where I got my first win. That’s kind of a neat little tidbit. Just a really cool day.”

    Blaney blended a fast car with a great strategy, where the team opted to forgo stage points for track position and ultimately a win, to collect his second win of the season. He didn’t finish among the top 10 and accumulate points in the first two stages, but there he was front and center when it came to the third and final stage.

    “It certainly played out a little differently than we had planned,” Blaney’s crew chief Jonathan Hassler said. “You have a plan coming in, but then the way cautions fall certainly dictates really kind of the way everything else works out. I think that caution around Lap 50 of the second stage really kind of diverted the strategy, spread the field out where we had an opportunity to short pit, flip the stage there going into stage three, get our track position at the right time.”

    RFK Racing’s Chris Buescher, a previous Pocono winner, held the lead through the opening of the third stage before a caution came out on Lap 116 for a single-car incident with Todd Gilliland in Turn 1. A number of contenders pitted, including Blaney who came out with the lead on 117. Pit road speeding penalties for Hendrick Motorsports teammates Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson, along with polesitter Ty Gibbs of Joe Gibbs Racing, spoiled any opportunity for a shot to contend for the win or a top-five finish.

    Blaney would lead the final 44 laps, but he did not cruise to a victory. Three cautions would fly during that period, but he was strong on the restarts to keep Bowman and Hamlin at bay. Bowman closed to .2 of a second with 19 to go but Blaney slowly stretched that lead out. Hamlin would overtake Bowman for second with seven to go and 2.3 seconds behind, but could only close to 1.312 seconds at the checkered.

    Bowman finished third, William Byron of Hendrick Motorsports fourth and Blaney’s teammate Joey Logano rounded out the top five.

    “Never lose a race, just always run out of time, right? That’s just part of it,” Hamlin said. “Track position is such a big thing. When the 12 (Blaney) jumped on that stage that we won, that put them in front of us. Certainly was going to be hard to pass. Not just enough laps of green there towards the end. Hats off to them. Great run. He kept great pace up there towards the front. Really hard for me to even try to get close to reeling him in.”

    Power Climbs Through Field, Finally Wins at Iowa Speedway

    NEWTON, Iowa (Sunday, July 14, 2024) – Add Iowa Speedway to the list of tracks where Will Power has won an NTT INDYCAR SERIES race.

    Power put that one on his impressive list with a victory in Sunday’s Hy-Vee One Step 250 presented by Gatorade. In doing so, Team Penske’s two-time series champion pushed his career race win total to 43, giving him sole possession of fourth place in the sport’s history. Power tied Michael Andretti’s career total last month with a victory at Road America.

    Sunday’s race was Power’s 19th attempt at the short oval east of Des Moines, Iowa. He had won an event-leading seven poles, but finishing second on four occasions, including last year, had been his best race result. His last oval-track victory was nearly five years ago at Pocono Raceway. He now has 10 career oval wins.

    “I’ve been trying to win this race for years (and) years,” said Power, who started deep in the 27-car field due to brushing the wall in Saturday’s qualifying session. “So, I’m over the moon (happy).”

    Power, 43, drove from the 22nd starting position and then received quick service from his No. 12 Verizon Business Team Penske Chevrolet crew to beat series leader Alex Palou during the final exchange of pit stops under green conditions. Power’s time advantage over Palou in that sequence was about nine-tenths of a second, according to information collected by NTT DATA.

    The separation between Power and Palou at the finish line was .3915 of a second.

    Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin, the winner of Saturday night’s Hy-Vee Homefront 250 presented by Instacart, finished third. He led the race’s first 94 laps to push his two-night consecutive laps led total to 259.

    McLaughlin lost Sunday’s lead when a caution came out on Lap 101 for Agustin Canapino’s stalled car in Turn 2. As Palou was on pit road at the time and Power hadn’t yet made his scheduled stop, those two drivers cycled to the front, pushing McLaughlin back to third.

    Power rode behind Palou for 104 of the next 114 laps before overtaking him on the second pit stop. That was the difference in the race’s outcome on a sunny and hot Midwestern afternoon.

    “Massive fuel (saving),” Power said of how he moved up through the field. “Honestly, (I was) just sitting in the pack. I had a really good car – a really fast car – so I sat back and used that pace to save fuel and get a massive (fuel) number.

    “I knew once all those (frontrunners) pulled in (for pit service) I could go hard, and then we caught a yellow. That was sort of the thing we were hoping for, to get one of those yellows to put us to the front. Then we were able to get better fuel mileage behind Palou and go a lap longer than him and then jump in (to the pits).”

    Said McLaughlin: “We probably caught the caution at the wrong time, (but) first and third (in the two races), I’ll take that.”

    Dixon finished fourth in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing while Colton Herta fifth in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda of Andretti Global w/Curb-Agajanian.

    With the victory, Power cut Palou’s lead in the standings to 35 points with six races remaining.

    As Power and Palou were crossing the finish line, a multicar crash coming off Turn 2 occurred. Sting Ray Robb ran over the back of Alexander Rossi’s car, vaulting Robb’s car high in the air vertically. Behind them, Ed Carpenter and Kyle Kirkwood spun and with Rossi, they ended up against the inside retaining wall with Carpenter’s car on top of Kirkwood’s.

    Rossi, Kirkwood and Carpenter safely climbed from their damaged cars. Robb gave two thumbs up before being transported to a local hospital as a precaution for further evaluation.

    Practice for the 12th race of the season, the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto, begins Friday at 3 p.m. ET at Exhibition Place in Toronto. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Christian Lundgaard earned his first series race victory last year on the temporary street circuit.

    Sunday’s 85-lap race will air live on Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network.
