  • Todd Gilliland Finishes A Disappointing 20th After Strong Start

Todd Gilliland Finishes A Disappointing 20th After Strong Start

The father-son duo was in full force this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway.

It was David and Todd Gilliland who were both competing in the Kyle Busch Motorsports stable with David in the No. 51 and Todd in the No 4.

Todd started sixth and was strong early as he finished sixth in Stage 1, and was able to win the second stage after taking the lead on Lap 38.

It wasn’t until Lap 63 where we would see Todd take the top spot once more, working with his dad, David. Unfortunately, Todd was involved in an incident on Lap 84, after some hard racing and contact with race leader, Grant Enfinger. Gilliland spun all the way down to the inside wall, which saw his truck pound the wall and catch air.

After leading 13 laps and winning Stage 2, his day was done and he was relegated to a 20th place finish.

“I was just trying to get under the 98 (Grant Enfinger) while I could,” Gilliland said to MRN Radio. “I felt like this was a good situation. I could see him (Enfinger) coming up more and more. I got into him a little bit in the middle of Turns 3 and 4. He got really far off the bottom and I tried to fill the hole, and I was to his wheel, then he just came back down.”

“Just racing here, that’s what it’s all about, I guess,” Todd told MRN Radio.” “I was having a lot of fun up until then, as my truck was so fast. That was a lot of fun. Guess we’ll just rebound. Won a stage and everything, so just focus on Daytona next year, I guess. First time doing it, not too bad.

  • Wendell Chavous Earns Top Five Finish In Last Career NASCAR Start

Wendell Chavous Earns Top Five Finish In Last Career NASCAR Start

It was announced earlier in the week, that Wendell Chavous would not race anymore in NASCAR after the Truck Series race at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday afternoon. However, Chavous made the most of the opportunity with a fifth-place finish after starting 32nd.

He was able to avoid all of the wrecks, including the last lap wreck which saw Chavous go to the front of the pack. Timing and scoring had at first shown him as the unofficial race winner, but scoring loops showed Timothy Peters as the eventual race winner at the time of the caution. Still, Chavous came home in the fifth position for his final NASCAR start in the Premium Motorsports entry.

“Man, you just don’t know how great this is,” Chavous told MRN Radio. “Leaving the sport to go take care of my family and business, then get my best finish. Man, this is just awesome! Gotta thank my crew guys, Sobriety Nation Chevrolet. Heavy with hearts, the guy riding with me had a crew member who has a family member who passed away. He was riding with me. I think he was pushing me on through the deal back there.”

Chavous made the decision to retire because of the “demanding” schedule and to spend more time with his family.

“I have a 4-year-old son who is growing up very fast and I’ve missed important times in his life because of my racing career,” he said. “I am a father first and I want to be there for him to guide him and watch him grow up.”

The top five at Talladega was Chavous’ best finish in 50 career starts in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

  • Kurt Busch’s Busch Pole Award leads SHR sweep of top four ‘Dega starting spots

Kurt Busch’s Busch Pole Award leads SHR sweep of top four ‘Dega starting spots

Reid Spencer | NASCAR Wire Service

TALLADEGA, Ala. – All four Stewart-Haas Racing cars were amply endowed with speed for Saturday’s knockout qualifying session at Talladega Superspeedway.

Kurt Busch was just glad he got the pick of the litter.

“Four Stewart-Haas Fords — I’m really happy that I got the fast one,” Busch quipped after winning the pole for Sunday’s 1000Bulbs.com 500 (2 p.m. ET on NBC, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) and leading an SHR sweep of the top four starting spots for the second race in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs’ Round of 12.

The Busch Pole Award was Busch’s fifth of the season and the 27th of his career. What’s more, his final-round lap at 195.804 mph (48.906 seconds) ended a quest dating to his first race in the Cup series in 2000.

“We’re on the pole!” Busch said. “This is my first restrictor-plate pole ever. Ever! It took me almost 20 years. I got one!”

Busch beat teammate Clint Bowyer (195.301 mph) for the top starting spot by .126 seconds, a huge margin relative to the rest of the top 12. Kevin Harvick (195.186 mph) qualified third, followed by Aric Almirola (194.571 mph).

“With Stewart-Haas cars 1-2-3-4 at this race in the playoffs, it really sets the tone,” Busch said. “Now we’ve got to execute on Sunday.”

The time trials, however, were a tale of two organizations, not just one. Behind the four SHR entries were all four Hendrick Motorsports drivers, with last week’s Dover winner, Chase Elliott, leading the way into the fifth starting position. Jimmie Johnson, Alex Bowman and William Byron were close behind.

“With all four guys in the top 12, it’s a strong showing for us,” said Byron, whose lap time of 49.420 seconds (193.768 mph) was identical to Bowman’s. “That should be good for Sunday. Qualifying doesn’t reflect totally on how things will shake out Sunday and how you are going to race. But it should be fine.

“With the four of us together at the start, we have an opportunity to stay in front of some of the possible situations, but you don’t control much out there, and everything gets so shuffled during the race, it’s hard to know. But I feel good about where we are right now. We’ll see what happens.”

All four SHR drivers are competing for the series championship. Elliott and Bowman are still title contenders for Hendrick.

Playoff driver Kyle Busch qualified ninth in the fastest Toyota, with reigning series champion Martin Truex Jr. claiming the 11th starting position.

“You always want to make the second round, and you hope you can do a little better,” said Truex, who has never won a restrictor-plate race. “We thought we picked up some speed, and we gained one spot, beat the 17 (12th place qualifier Ricky Stenhouse Jr.).

“Better than none, and we’ll go get them tomorrow.”

The remaining four playoff drivers qualified as follows: Brad Keselowski 18th, Ryan Blaney 19th, Joey Logano 20th and Kyle Larson 34th.

With the playoff field set to be cut from 12 drivers to eight on Oct. 21 at Kansas Speedway, Bowyer and Almirola currently are tied for ninth in the standings, 10 points below the cut line.

  • David Gilliland Grabs Pole for Saturday’s Fr8Auctions 250

David Gilliland Grabs Pole for Saturday’s Fr8Auctions 250

    – NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoff Race will Trim Field of Contenders to Six
    – Saturday Schedule Includes Foodland/Food Giant Qualifying for Sunday’s 1000Bulbs.com 500
    – Sunday Ticket-Holders Can Attend Saturday Night Infield Concert Presented by Wind Creek Casino and Hotel

TALLADEGA, Ala. – David Gilliland captured the pole position for the Fr8Auctions 250 on Friday at Talladega Superspeedway, setting the stage for Saturday’s critical NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoff race.

The Fr8Auctions 250, set for Saturday at noon CDT, is the last race of the first NASCAR Playoff round for the truck series – and will trim the field of championship contenders to six. After three more events, the series will have its “Championship 4” finalized for the season’s last race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

For the eight drivers currently alive in the championship battle, a victory Saturday will award automatic advancement to the next round. But the “wild card” nature of Talladega’s 2.66-mile tri-oval means that in terms of a race victory, virtually everyone is a contender.

And that high-banked reality is personified by Gilliland (No. 51 Pedigree Toyota), racing in the truck series at Talladega for the first time, for Kyle Busch Motorsports. His overall Talladega resume, though, bodes well for Saturday. Gilliland won the pole for the track’s October 2006 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race, and started second in April 2007. He also has four top-10 ‘Dega finishes in Monster Energy Series competition.

Gilliland topped qualifying at 180.570 mph. Spencer Gallagher (No. 2 Allegiant Chevrolet) will start alongside on the front row. Gilliland’s son Todd (No. 4 Pedigree Puppy Toyota) will start sixth.

Also Saturday, at 10:05 a.m. CDT, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will have its only practice session. Foodland/Food Giant Qualifying is set for 3:35 p.m. CDT, to establish the starting lineup for the weekend’s main event – Sunday’s 1000Bulbs.com 500.

Saturday night, fans also can enjoy off-track activities. Kids Movie Night will take place in the FOX Sports 1 Dome (located behind the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, just outside the track), with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. CDT. Anyone holding a Sunday ticket will also have access to the traditional Saturday Night Infield Concert presented by Wind Creek Casino and Hotel (6 p.m. CDT), located in the infamous infield at the 2.66-mile venue, featuring country music artist Chris Janson.

    About Talladega Superspeedway
Talladega Superspeedway is NASCAR’s most competitive (record 88 lead changes in 188 laps), highest banked (33 degrees), and longest track (2.66-miles), as well as the most fun and fan-friendly. Talladega offers something for everyone, including hundreds of acres of free camping, amazing kids tickets and college student prices, along with special offers for military members and first responders, and teachers and educators. The historic venue, which opened in 1969, is deemed NASCAR’s “Party Capital” thanks to the track’s infamous infield, which features the traditional Saturday Night Infield Concert presented by Wind Creek Casino and Hotel and the world-renowned Talladega Blvd., home of Friday night’s “Big One on the Blvd.” party. It’s the site of the most comfortable seats in motorsports, large ISM Vision HD video boards lining the frontstretch and endless pre-race activities for fans on race day, including special Kids VIP opportunities. For ticket information, visit www.talladegasuperspeedway.com or call 855-518-RACE (7223).

The track, along with its parent company, International Speedway Corporation, recently announced Transformation – The Talladega Superspeedway Infield Project. The approximate $50 million redevelopment endeavor is part of ISC’s long-term capital allocation plan and reinvestment into its major motorsports complexes. The project, highlighted by a one-of-a-kind Garage Fan Zone Experience, will feature “up-close” access, interactive attractions and enhanced amenities for fans, sponsors, teams and stakeholders in the iconic Talladega infield. Full completion of the modernized project is scheduled for October of 2019. Fans can learn more about the project by visiting www.talladegasuperspeedway.com/transformation. The track, which opened in 1969, will also celebrate its 50th Anniversary next year.

  • Hendrick Motorsports names 2019 crew chiefs for Nos. 24 and 48 teams

Hendrick Motorsports names 2019 crew chiefs for Nos. 24 and 48 teams

KNAUS, GRUBB AND MEENDERING TO ASSUME NEW ROLES

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 10, 2018) – Hendrick Motorsports has named new crew chiefs for the organization’s Nos. 24 and 48 NASCAR Cup Series teams, effective at the conclusion of the 2018 racing season.

The assignments represent new roles for veterans Chad Knaus and Darian Grubb, along with the return to Hendrick Motorsports of Kevin Meendering. The responsibilities for 2019 include:

    · Knaus will become crew chief for William Byron and the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 team with its respective personnel. He currently leads the No. 48 team of Jimmie Johnson.

    · Meendering will become crew chief for Johnson and the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 team with its respective personnel. He is currently crew chief of NASCAR Xfinity Series playoff contender Elliott Sadler.

    · Grubb will be promoted to technical director, an executive leadership role supporting Hendrick Motorsports’ engineering and vehicle development resources. He is currently crew chief of the No. 24 team with Byron.

The 47-year-old Knaus will complete his 17th season as crew chief for Johnson and the No. 48 team, representing the longest-running crew chief-driver relationship in NASCAR. The pair has won a record-tying seven NASCAR Cup championships together and this season competed in the series playoffs for a record 15th time.

Knaus will return to the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team he originally joined 25 years ago. From 1993 to 1998, the Rockford, Illinois, native assumed a variety of duties under the direction of crew chief and mentor Ray Evernham. He oversaw body development and served as a tire changer for the No. 24 team, proving to be an integral part of driver Jeff Gordon’s 1995 and 1997 Cup titles.

Meendering, 37, oversees Sadler’s team for Hendrick Motorsports affiliate JR Motorsports. In three seasons as an Xfinity Series crew chief, the Grand Rapids, Michigan, native has led the veteran driver to three wins, 38 top-five finishes, 75 top-10s and the 2017 regular season title.

Before joining JRM, Meendering spent 16 years at Hendrick Motorsports beginning with a high-school internship in the chassis department. In 2008, he was named assistant engineer for the No. 24 team with Gordon and in 2011 became lead engineer for the No. 88 team of Dale Earnhardt Jr. He holds a mechanical engineering degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Grubb, 43, will finish the season as crew chief for the No. 24 team with Byron, who leads the 2018 Cup Series rookie of the year standings. The Floyd, Virginia, native served in a variety of technical roles with Hendrick Motorsports from 2003-2008, including race engineer, engineering manager and crew chief.

After stints at Joe Gibbs Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing, where he won a Cup title as crew chief for Tony Stewart, Grubb returned to Hendrick Motorsports in January 2016 as vehicle production director. He was promoted to director of competition systems in August 2017 before being named crew chief of the No. 24 team. Grubb holds a mechanical engineering degree from Virginia Tech.

Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports:

On Chad Knaus and Jimmie Johnson: “Chad and Jimmie will go down as one of the greatest combinations in sports history. They defied the odds by performing at a championship level for longer than anyone could’ve possibly imagined. What they’ve accomplished together has been absolutely remarkable and will be celebrated for generations. This has been an incredible, storybook run.”

On the Knaus-Johnson decision: “It’s no secret that Chad and Jimmie have experienced their ups and downs over the years. They’re fierce competitors, great friends and have immense respect for one another. They also fight like brothers. All three of us agree it’s finally time for new challenges and that a change will benefit them and the organization.”

On Kevin Meendering: “Over the last couple of years, he’s been one of the most sought-after talents in the garage. Kevin is an impressive person who came up in our organization and will hit the ground running on day one. We already know how well he works with our people and that he’s a respected, forward-thinking crew chief. Having worked with a veteran driver like Elliott Sadler for three years is extremely valuable experience. He’s the right fit for Jimmie at the right time. With an established No. 48 team behind them, I believe they will perform at a winning level next season and chase that eighth championship.”

On Darian Grubb: “Darian has established himself as a respected leader in our company, and we’ve seen him thrive in an executive role. We’ve identified opportunities for improvement, and we know having him step up to technical director will help move us forward in those areas. He’s a champion who brings a wealth of knowledge that will continue to benefit us.”

On pairing William Byron and Chad Knaus: “You can’t quantify how much Chad’s leadership and championship experience will benefit William, who is a special talent. The two of them are a great match, and I’m excited to see what they can do together. Chad has the Rainbow Warriors pedigree and truly appreciates the history of the No. 24. I’ve asked him to build another winner and given him the green light to put his stamp on the team and do it his way.”

On today’s announcement: “We believe these decisions will provide us with a tremendous opportunity for success in the future. As an organization, we are here to win races and compete for championships. Everything we do comes down to putting our people in the best possible positions to further that objective. Winning is what it’s all about.”

  • New Rules Package for 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Season

New Rules Package for 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Season

Package Makes Daytona Debut at Coke Zero Sugar 400 on July 6

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (October 2, 2018) – NASCAR today announced a multi-faceted rules package for the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.

The rules package for Speedweeks and the 61st annual DAYTONA 500 on Sunday, Feb. 17 will remain the same as past years with the use of a restrictor plate and tapered spacer to reduce the amount of air flow into the engine. The 2019 rules package will be implemented for the Coke Zero Sugar 400 on July 6 where cars will utilize only a smaller tapered spacer to restrict air flow into the engine, negating the need for a restrictor plate, which was first introduced in 1987.

Cars will be producing 550 horsepower with the 2019 rules package at Daytona International Speedway, an estimated increase of 140 horsepower, but will continue to turn laps around the 2.5-mile tri-oval at speeds near 200 mph. As a result, the machines will have more horsepower and more maneuverability, along with more downforce and stability to provide even more passing opportunities throughout the field.

“Both races at Daytona International Speedway in 2019 will continue to be among the most exciting in NASCAR,” Daytona International Speedway President Chip Wile said. “The new rules package will produce the same thrilling style of racing that fans have come to expect at the ‘World Center of Racing.’ We have been using the combination of a tapered spacer and restrictor plate at Daytona International Speedway for the past couple of years to reduce air flow into the engine.  NASCAR has made the tapered spacer package more efficient which, in turn, has allowed the teams to eliminate the need for a restrictor plate but still maintain the world-class, side-by-side racing that our fans have come to expect when they experience a race at Daytona.”

Tickets for DAYTONA Speedweeks events – including the 61st annual DAYTONA 500 – can be purchased online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP. Fans can stay connected with Daytona International Speedway on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, PinterestYouTube and Snapchat, and by downloading Daytona International Speedway’s mobile app, for the latest Speedway news throughout the season.

His 106.868 mph lap in the No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford earned him his fourth pole of the season and the 26th of his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series career. Bush was the only Ford driver at the top of the leaderboard with Chevrolets scoring seven of the top 10 starting positions.

Busch, a playoff contender, spoke about the significance of the pole, saying, “It’s pretty special to get the pole at an inaugural event and to do it here at the Roval, I mean, there’s so much going on. There’s so much that everybody has to manage, crew chief, lead engineer, myself, engine tuners, everybody chipped in on this 41 car the right way. We had a plan for the first two rounds and it paid off. I struggled this year qualifying at Watkins Glen and at Sonoma, so we came here with a plan and it worked. Some conventional wisdom and thinking played out with our pole run today, but thanks to the guys, Monster Energy, Haas Automation, and Ford. We’re on the pole for the Roval.”

AJ Allmendinger’s expertise on road courses was evident as he will start beside Busch after qualifying second with a lap speed of 106.811 mph in what will be his final season in the No. 47 JTG Daugherty Racing Chevrolet.

“It’s a crazy race track, for sure,” he said. “It’s like my Champ Car days. It’s a street course in the infield there. The walls are on both sides and if you make a small mistake, you’re going to pay the price for it. To me, it makes for a lot of fun because you’ve got to be on point. You’ve got to be aggressive but you can’t be over-aggressive. I could nit-pick both my laps and say there’s a lot more out there, but you could easily try to get that and find yourself in the wall. My strategy (for Sunday) is to go out there and try to win. I’ve got no job, it doesn’t matter. I’m going there trying to win.”

Alex Bowman (P), Chase Elliott (P) and Kyle Larson (P), rounded out the top five qualifiers. Jimmie Johnson (P), Clint Bowyer (P), Jamie McMurray, Ryan Blaney (P) and Chris Buescher will start in sixth-10th, respectively.

Bowman was pleased with his effort but said, “Well I didn’t think we would qualify third on the Roval, so this was a nice surprise! Greg (Ives) and this Axalta team made some great changes after practice, which made the car a lot better in some of the turns. I messed up off the bus stop, so I think the biggest thing on Sunday will be minimizing mistakes. I’m glad to be up toward the front to start this race and hopefully, we can stay up front all day on Sunday and have a clean Axalta Camaro ZL1 at the end of the day.”

Johnson spoke about the significance of starting up front.

“Track position is going to be super important after that first stage and we are after stage points,” he said. “Strategy is going to play a huge role in this race, and the first guy with enough fuel and tires for the finish is going to be in great, great shape. But we need points in each segment and then obviously a good result at the end. So, starting this close to the front is a huge, huge help.”

Playoff drivers Erik Jones, Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Joey Logano qualified 12th-15th, respectively, with Kevin Harvick and Aric Almirola starting 19th and 20th. The remaining drivers vying for the championship will start in the back half of the field, including Austin Dillon (24th), Brad Keselowski (25th) and Denny Hamlin (27th).

The Charlotte Roval course has proved to be challenging as evidenced by several incidents during practice and qualifying. It will also serve as an elimination race and cut the Playoff field from 16 drivers to 12. Only three drivers have clinched a spot in the next round – Kyle Busch, Keselowski and Truex. Bowyer, Johnson, Jones and Hamlin are currently below the cutoff.

Hamlin may face the biggest hurdle as he enters the race ranked last in the Round of 16. During qualifying, he hit the outside wall and damaged the rear of his car. The Joe Gibbs Racing team made repairs to the No. 11 and were able to make another qualifying run to start 27th. However, the decision was made to go to a backup car which means Hamlin will start from the rear of the field.

Sunday’s Bank of America Roval 400 will be televised on NBC at 2 p.m. with radio coverage by PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
