Hot 20 – Saturday night it is Bristol, baby!

There are races you mark down, make plans for, but there are few venues that seem to provide the kind of action that transforms those events into stand alone spectacles. Daytona is one. Talladega is another. You might want to add Darlington, for tradition sake, and Sonoma to the mix. Charlotte hosts the longest and next year they break out the road course for its second date. Then there are the two in Bristol, Tennessee.

While we continue to yearn for announcers who captivate us with their voices, delivery, dialogue, banter, information, or entertainment value, it does not matter this Saturday night. This time, the track will take care of all that itself. No one is going to run away from the pack. Lapped cars will matter if only for being in the way. Fenders are going to be dented, drivers are going to get hot, and fans are going to find their time well spent. That is not always the case in NASCAR. It is damn near becoming the exception to the rule, but Saturday night they are in Bristol.

I am not sure if we will have another offering from a shrill voiced fellow with a distinctive accent, but if your head announcer does not sound something like Ken Squier, Chris Economaki, or at the very least Mike Joy, do not hire them. If your booth announcers do not have the bantering chemistry of Kyle Petty and Wally Dallenbach, you have failed. If the race sucks, at least your announcers can not. The name of the game is to keep us watching. Thankfully, this is Bristol, so that does not matter as much this week.

It will be interesting to see how many of its 162,000 seats will be filled in Thunder Valley’s stadium like layout. If they fail to turn out to watch the action on the 0.533 mile track, if they are not crowded on the couch to take it all in at home, do not expect things to get any better when they get to Chicago, Dover, or Kansas. In future, a general rule of thumb would be if a race track is not designed to be the next Daytona, Talladega, Bristol, Sonoma, or even a Martinsville, do not build it.

If I did not follow the sport, if I did not know what each race means to each driver, if I had no idea what the Chase was or what the points meant, if I did not know the difference between an Earnhardt and an Erlich Bachman, I probably would watch only a dozen events each season for their stand alone entertainment value.

The race Saturday night at Bristol would be one of them.

    1. MARTIN TRUEX JR. – 4 WINS (933 Pts)
If you want to win, you got to beat him…team mate or not…

    2. KYLE LARSON – 3 WINS (804 Pts)
…just like Larson did last Sunday.

    3. JIMMIE JOHNSON – 3 WINS (592 Pts)
Won at Bristol in the spring. Why not on a summer night?

    4. BRAD KESELOWSKI – 2 WINS (720 Pts)
If Johnson does not win, another two-time Bristol winner would not mind wearing the suds.

    5. RICKY STENHOUSE, JR. – 2 WINS (505 Pts)
Better half could be without a ride at SHR next year. I didn’t even know he and Kurt were dating.

    6. KYLE BUSCH – 1 WIN (797 Pts)
They may be from Las Vegas, but Bristol is Busch country.

    7. KEVIN HARVICK – 1 WIN (787 Pts)
Harvick is a champion, yet less popular than Junior or Danica. Maybe more so after last week.

    8. DENNY HAMLIN – 1 WIN (710 Pts)
    It is a girl!

    9. RYAN BLANEY – 1 WIN (592 Pts)
Maybe Blaney can be the next Junior. You know, someone Harvick can harp on.

    10. KURT BUSCH – 1 WIN (554 Pts)
Going into his 600th career race, the brothers have each claimed five at Thunder Valley.

    11. RYAN NEWMAN – 1 WIN (536 Pts)
The invisible man was fourth last week while averaging 15.9 over the season.

    12. KASEY KAHNE – 1 WIN (438 Pts)
After wrecking with Suarez on Sunday, I bet he wished he was still with the good hands people.

    13. AUSTIN DILLON – 1 WIN (436 Pts)
Top Ten last week was his first since he won at Charlotte in late May.

    14. CHASE ELLIOTT – 685 POINTS
Probably a near lock for the Chase, but that first career win sure would be nice.

    15. JAMIE MCMURRAY – 675 POINTS
Could be 40 points higher if not for wrecking at Martinsville and Pocono.

    16. MATT KENSETH – 654 POINTS
Odds of 4x Bristol winner making the Chase are better than driving a competitive car next year.

    17. CLINT BOWYER – 623 POINTS
Pit penalties and a flat tire ruined his plans last week, and did him no favors hunting down Matt.

    18. JOEY LOGANO – 556 POINTS (1 Win)
Might feel the worst, but if he came first it would turn his frown upside down.

    19. ERIK JONES – 524 POINTS
Has a string of three Top Tens. Now he needs a Top One.

    20. DANIEL SUAREZ – 515 POINTS
Actually 17th in points, but race winners Stenhouse, Kahne, and Dillon now sit ahead of him.

  • William Byron to compete in the NASCAR Cup Series for Hendrick Motorsports beginning in 2018

William Byron to compete in the NASCAR Cup Series for Hendrick Motorsports beginning in 2018

AXALTA AND LIBERTY UNIVERSITY ON BOARD AS PRIMARY SPONSORS

CONCORD, N.C. (Aug. 9, 2017) – Record-breaking teenager William Byron will drive for 12-time NASCAR Cup Series champions Hendrick Motorsports beginning next season. He will debut at stock car racing’s highest level in the 2018 Daytona 500 and compete for rookie of the year honors.

Byron’s No. 5 Chevrolet team will feature sponsorship from Axalta Coating Systems and Liberty University, which currently support the 19-year-old driver in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Beginning in 2018, the two primary sponsors will cover the majority of Byron’s Cup races annually. Additional details of the multi-year partnerships will be announced at a later date.

In 2016, Byron turned in the most successful debut season in Camping World Truck Series history with a NASCAR national series rookie record seven victories. This year, the Charlotte, North Carolina, native progressed into the Xfinity Series, where he has already earned three wins — Iowa, Daytona and Indianapolis — and currently ranks second in the standings after 20 of 33 races with Hendrick Motorsports affiliate JR Motorsports.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Byron, who will turn 20 on Nov. 29. “Mr. (Rick) Hendrick has built such a great team. The people at Hendrick Motorsports have dedicated their lives to giving their drivers the best chance to win every weekend. I have a responsibility to them to work hard and put everything I have into this opportunity. They need to know I’m always giving 100 percent because that’s what they do.

“When I told my parents that I wanted to drive race cars, they supported me and believed I could do it. Without them, there’s no way this would be possible. Axalta and Liberty University are awesome partners, and I’m so thankful for their faith in me. I’m going to do all I can to make my family, my sponsors and my teammates proud and represent them all in the right way.”

Hendrick Motorsports signed Byron in August 2016. Next season, he will join drivers Chase Elliott, Jimmie Johnson and Alex Bowman as a member of the four-car NASCAR Cup Series operation.

“At every step, William has proven how quickly he can adapt,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “Some drivers have raw talent and some have a strong work ethic. William has both. It’s impressive to see a young guy who never gets rattled and instinctively knows how to communicate with his team. That level of commitment, poise and pure ability is rare at any age. I think he’s just scratching the surface.”

Axalta Coating Systems (NYSE: AXTA), a leading global supplier of liquid and powder coatings, became a sponsor of Byron’s Xfinity Series effort this season. With primary sponsorship across teammates Byron and Alex Bowman (15 races), the company will increase its already significant presence with Hendrick Motorsports in 2018. Axalta has been a Hendrick Motorsports corporate partner since 1992 and recently opened its state-of-the-art Customer Experience Center on the team’s campus.

Liberty University began its support of Byron in 2014 when he drove late models for JR Motorsports and is now in its fourth season sponsoring the driver. Founded in 1971 and located in Lynchburg, Virginia, Liberty University is the largest private, nonprofit university in the United States, the largest university in Virginia and the largest Christian university in the world. Byron is currently a sophomore student working toward an undergraduate degree in business communications through the school’s online education program.

“To have this opportunity with a new partner (to Hendrick Motorsports) in Liberty University and to grow what’s been an incredible long-term relationship with Axalta, it’s very special,” Hendrick said. “These are two sponsors who have already built effective programs around our sport and now see even more possibilities. It’s a big compliment to William, who has been a terrific ambassador for them both, and we look forward to a bright future together.”

Hendrick Motorsports and Kasey Kahne to end six-year run

CONCORD, N.C. (Aug. 7, 2017) – Hendrick Motorsports and Kasey Kahne will end their six-year run together following the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series season. The driver has been released from the final year of his contract, allowing him to immediately pursue opportunities for 2018.

“Kasey has worked extremely hard,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “He’s a tremendous teammate and person, and he has been totally dedicated to our program since day one. I’ve always believed that he’s a special talent, and I know he will thrive in the right situation. We will do everything we can to finish the season as strong as we can.”

Kahne, 37, will complete the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series schedule for Hendrick Motorsports. He was signed by the organization in April 2010, nearly two years before his February 2012 debut in its No. 5 Chevrolet. Now in their sixth season together, Kahne has earned six of his 18 career points-paying Cup victories with the No. 5 team.

“I’d like to thank Rick and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports for their hard work and dedication, along with providing me a great opportunity and success over the last six years,” said Kahne, who most recently won July 23 at Indianapolis. “We won six races together and I’m coming off of one of the biggest wins of my career at the Brickyard, which has given the (No.) 5 team a lot of momentum heading into the playoffs. We still have a lot of racing left in 2017 and finishing strong is our top priority. I look forward to what the next chapter in my career holds.”

Hendrick Motorsports will announce 2018 plans for its four-car operation at a later date.

  • Busch claims first XFINITY Series win at Watkins Glen International in thrilling finish to Zippo 200

Busch claims first XFINITY Series win at Watkins Glen International in thrilling finish to Zippo 200

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — Kyle Busch was able to check off another box in his illustrious career on Saturday afternoon at Watkins Glen International by claiming his first NASCAR XFINITY Series career victory in the Zippo 200 at The Glen.

With only three laps to go, Busch got a great final restart, allowing him to hold off fellow Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series regulars Joey Logano and teammate Brad Keselowski to gain his fourth NXS victory of the 2017 season.

“I’ve won here before in the Cup series (2008 & 2013), so to be able to win here in the XFINITY Series just kind of checks that box for what I’ve been trying to accomplish at The Glen for a few years,” said the driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. “I’m hoping we can go for a sweep and be one of the few guys who may have ever been able to do that here.”

Although Busch led most of Stage One, he took a spin into Turn One late in the 20-lap stage and gave up the green-white checkered to Keselowski. The No. 18 faced adversity once more after being penalized for driver through too many pit boxes. In Stage Two Paul Menard held of the Penske duo to gain that stages victory.

Busch led a total 43 of the 80 laps and hopes to continue him momentum from today into tomorrow’s I Love NY 355 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event.

The significance of winning at The Glen was not lost on Busch after the race.

“The history here has been around for a long, long time with Formula 1 races and sports car races, Indy car races and so it’s obviously awesome to score a win at venues like this.”

The I Love New York 355 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday afternoon caps off a tripleheader of NASCAR action at Watkins Glen International. Tickets are available at the WGI ticket office for the race, which gets underway at 3:00 p.m. EST.

  • Mobil 1™ to Continue as the ‘Official Motor Oil of NASCAR®’

Mobil 1™ to Continue as the ‘Official Motor Oil of NASCAR®’

    • ExxonMobil’s Mobil 1 has been the ‘Official Motor Oil of NASCAR®’ since 2003.
    • NASCAR sponsorship helped support the recent launch of Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Today, at the NASCAR Fuel for Business meetings in New York City, ExxonMobil and NASCAR® announced the renewal of a long-standing partnership, continuing to designate its Mobil 1™ brand as the “Official Motor Oil of NASCAR®”. The newly signed agreement will extend the successful partnership to 20 years, which has been highlighted by marketing and technological innovation that has catalyzed growth across both entities.

“We are delighted to continue to serve as the ‘Official Motor Oil of NASCAR’,” said Kai Decker, global motorsports manager at ExxonMobil. “The renewed partnership allows us to connect with racing fans of the most popular and exciting motorsport series in the country. NASCAR has also been integral in helping support the launch of Mobil 1TM Annual Protection motor oil.”

ExxonMobil extensively used their “Official Motor Oil of NASCAR” status to help launch Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil, which allows drivers to go one full year – or 20,000 miles whichever, comes first – between oil changes. For the breakout product’s nationwide advertising campaign, Stewart-Haas Racing driver Kevin Harvick features as the hero of the commercials, while also being featured in a prominent video series on social media. A new digital video series featuring the entire Stewart-Haas Racing team is also supporting the new product. Furthermore, the Mobil 1 Annual Protection product appeared as a primary sponsor on the hood for each of the Stewart-Haas Racing drivers at NASCAR tracks throughout the 2017 season.

To further support the launch of Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil, ExxonMobil will host a fan-friendly event at Plaza33 outside New York City’s most iconic basketball arena on Wednesday, August 16. Kevin Harvick will be in attendance and fans will have the opportunity to meet the driver of the No. 4 car, while also taking part in unique activities.

Mobil 1TM synthetic motor oil is used by more than 50 percent of teams competing in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series™, NASCAR XFINITY Series™ and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series™. The use of these oils across all three series provides a testing ground for ExxonMobil engineers, who create products for race fans and general consumers, which are proven to perform under some of the most challenging of conditions.

“Mobil 1 is one of the most recognizable brands in the world and we are pleased to continue our longstanding partnership for years to come,” said Lou Garate, vice president, partnership marketing, NASCAR. “Our partner utilizes its official status as a powerful part of its marketing mix through advertising, packaging, point-of-sale and promotions, helping market NASCAR to millions of Americans.”

The continued partnership with NASCAR is increasingly beneficial to the brand. A recent study from Turnkey sports and entertainment found that at the end of the 2016 race season, the number of NASCAR race fans identifying Mobil 1TM as the “Official Motor Oil of NASCAR” was at a three-year high, increasing steadily among avid and casual NASCAR fans each year since the end of the 2014 season. The proportion of NASCAR fans stating they would be more likely to purchase a product from an Official NASCAR Partner has also increased by 13 percent over the same period.

According to a recent independent study from Simmons Research, NASCAR fans are 30 percent more likely than non-fans to add or change motor oil themselves or have another household member do so.
