    Kyle Busch Wins at Phoenix, as Championship 4 XFINITY Field is Set

    AVONDALE, Ariz. – It was just another routine Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway for Kyle Busch.

    But nothing else in the Ticket Galaxy 200 was at all ordinary.

    All the drama unfolded behind Busch, as eight drivers scrambled for four positions in the NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase’s Championship 4 Round at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

    Busch led 190 of 200 laps on the way to his 10th NASCAR XFINITY Series victory of the season, his 10th at the one-mile track and the 86th of his career, extending his own series record.

    Busch beat runner-up Austin Dillon to the finish line by 6.115 seconds. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. ran third in his first XFINITY Series start since 2013.

    “It means a lot,” said Busch, who won his 170th race across NASCAR’s top three touring series. “That’s what we set out to do tonight, and we’ve been really fast here at Phoenix.

    “We’ve had some great race cars and Chris Gayle (crew chief) and all these guys do such a great job each and every week preparing these things – and it’s fun to win here.”

    Justin Allgaier and Daniel Suarez secured spots in the Championship 4 with respective fourth and fifth-place finishes, as did Erik Jones, who recovered from a pit road mistake on Lap 93 to finish 10th.

    But the real tension waited until after the race, when Elliott Sadler sat anxiously on pit road as NASCAR officials decided whether loose lug nuts would cost Sadler, the 13th-place finisher, the services of his crew chief, Kevin Meendering, in the season finale.

    NASCAR found two loose lug nuts, and that means Meendering will serve a suspension next week. Sadler did not know who his crew chief will be at Homestead – though he was lobbying, somewhat facetiously, for team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. to take over the pit box.

    “The emotions of the last 30 minutes have been tough,” Sadler said. “We knew one was loose, and one was in question. Kevin’s pretty much become my best friend, and Kevin’s made me a race car driver again this year.

    “We’ve saved our Darlington car – our best car – for Homestead. We’ve put all our eggs in that car. We’ve done everything right as a race team to go to Homestead with a legitimate shot of walking away a champion. Now that we know he’s going to be suspended, it’s going to be tough.”

    NASCAR XFINITY Series Managing Director Wayne Auton said there was never a possibility of Sadler losing his spot in the Championship 4.

    “At the end of the race, we bring all the cars down to the entrance of pit road for inspection of the wheels and the lug nuts,” Auton said. “We observed that the No. 1 car had two lug nuts not secured to the wheel. With that being said, all the teams were very much aware at the start of the Chase of the violations that could come about.

    “We’ve advised the team that they’re going to be looking for a crew chief for next week and a monetary fine of about $10,000. It’s clearly in the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series rule book.”

    Blake Koch finished eighth and lost the final Championship 4 position to Sadler by four points. Joining Koch on the Chase sidelines were Ryan Reed, who finished sixth, and Brendan Gaughan and Darrell Wallace Jr., who were wrecked and eliminated before the race was 150 laps old.

    Gaughan, who needed a victory to advance to Homestead, was playing fuel strategy when his right front tire went flat on the frontstretch on Lap 138. Gaughan pounded the Turn 1 wall and retired in 35th place.

    “It was about to play out the way we wanted,” Gaughan said after exiting the infield care center. “Did not want to be the caution. Did not want to hit that hard – but we took a shot.”

    Wallace’s grandmother had passed away during the week before the race, and the No. 6 Ford carried her name, “Granny Jan,” above the driver’s door. On Lap 148, Koch ducked to the inside off Turn 4 and knocked Wallace’s Mustang into the inside frontstretch wall.

    “My grandmother was giving me the ride of my life,” Wallace said, his voice breaking with emotion. “That was the most fun I have had all year. Just circumstances took us out. It’s just hard. Thanks, Granny, I love you. We will go on to Homestead and let her ride again.”

    Kyle Busch Fastest in Final Cup Practice at Phoenix

    Kyle Busch topped the chart in final Sprint Cup Series practice at Phoenix International Raceway.

    The driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was the fastest in the final practice session with a time of 26.401 and a speed of 136.358 mph. Brad Keselowski was second in his No. 2 Team Penske Ford with a time of 26.415 and a speed of 136.286 mph. Joey Logano was third in his No. 22 Penske Ford with a time of 26.431 and a speed of 136.204 mph. Alex Bowman was fourth in his No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet with a time of 26.462 and a speed of 136.044 mph. Austin Dillon rounded out the top-five in his No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet with a time of 26.475 and a speed of 135.977 mph.

    Chase Elliott was sixth in his No. 24 HMS Chevrolet. Kyle Larson was seventh in his No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet followed by Ryan Blaney who was eighth in his No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford.     Martin Truex Jr. topped the chart in second Sprint Cup Series practice at Phoenix International Raceway.

    The driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota was the fastest in the second practice session with a time of 26.573 and a speed of 135.476 mph. Brad Keselowski was second in his No. 2 Team Penske Ford with a time of 26.586 and a speed of 135.410 mph. Jamie McMurray was third in his No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet with a time of 26.646 and a speed of 135.105 mph. Kyle Larson was fourth in his No. 42 Ganassi Chevrolet with a time of 26.655 and a speed of 135.059 mph. Joey Logano rounded out the top-five in his No. 22 Penske Ford with a time of 26.664 and a speed of 135.014 mph.

    Kevin Harvick was sixth in his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet followed by Chase Elliott in seventh in his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.     Daniel Suarez Wins First NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race as Chase Final Is Set

    AVONDALE, Ariz. – William Byron’s bitter disappointment proved a boon for two of his Kyle Busch Motorsports teammates in Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Phoenix International Raceway.

    When the engine in Byron’s No. 9 Toyota expired on Lap 141 of 150 – ending the championship run for the series’ most prolific winner this year – Kyle Busch Motorsports teammate Daniel Suarez took over the race lead and went on to score the first NCWTS victory of his career.

    Byron’s elimination from the inaugural Camping World Truck Series Chase also helped teammate Christopher Bell, who claimed the last berth in the Championship 4 with a seventh-place finish. Bell joins second-place finisher Johnny Sauter, third-place Matt Crafton and fifth-place Timothy Peters with a chance to win the title next Friday at Homestead-Miami Speedway (8 p.m. ET on FS1).

    Suarez pulled ahead of Sauter after a restart with four laps left and led by .510 seconds when he crossed the finish line for the final time.

    “He was running a perfect race and things like this happen,” Suarez said of the demise of his teammate, who had led 112 of the first 137 laps before his engine began to fail. “The first victory in any series is always the most difficult to get.

    “I’m just very proud of this team for their effort. They’ve done a really good job all year. I’m very happy that we were able to get the win for KBM and Toyota.”

    Byron’s engine issue was sudden and unexpected.

    “We had been running hot a little bit the last run – kind of all night,” Byron said. “It stayed within 10 (degree) range, but it started to vibrate, maybe the lap before… but it didn’t seem like a big deal, then it sputtered and flames came out from underneath the truck.”

    And now Bell will race for the championship instead of the 18-year-old Byron, who has posted a series-best six victories in his rookie season.

    Seeking a sweep of the Round of 6 after victories at Martinsville and Texas, Sauter couldn’t catch Suarez in the four-lap run to the finish.

    “We had a great truck, especially on the long runs,” said Sauter, whose No. 21 Silverado is the only Chevrolet in the Championship 4. “Unfortunately, I just could not get going in the short run. I was just extremely loose…

    “I knew at the end there I needed to get a really, really good restart, and I didn’t get the restart I needed. I’ve got nobody to blame but myself for that. But I’m just proud of everybody’s effort. We just needed to keep pushing. Even though everybody says there’s no pressure, there’s always pressure – this is racing.”

    Crafton and Peters were one point apart entering the race and battled in close quarters for most of the race. Until Byron’s engine blew, they were contesting the final position at Homestead until Bell fell back on a late restart.

    “There wasn’t a lap that wasn’t tense,” Crafton said. “We just raced hard from the beginning to the end.”

    Note: Toyota clinched its ninth manufacturer’s championship in 13 seasons since entering the Truck Series in 2004.

    Kyle Larson topped the chart in first Sprint Cup Series practice at Phoenix International Raceway.

    The driver of the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet was the fastest in the first practice session with a time of 25.802 and a speed of 139.524 mph. Joey Logano was second in his No. 22 Team Penske Ford with a time of 25.808 and a speed of 139.492 mph. Chase Elliott was third in his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet with a time of 25.844 and a speed of 139.297 mph. Denny Hamlin was fourth in his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota with a time of 25.871 and a speed of 139.152 mph. Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top-five in his No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota with a time of 25.874 and a speed of 139.136 mph.

    Jamie McMurray was sixth in his No. 1 Ganassi Chevrolet. Jimmie Johnson was seventh in his No. 48 HMS Chevrolet. Kurt Busch was eighth in his No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet.     Truex wrecked in the closing seconds of the session and went to a backup car.

    Late Pass Gives Johnny Sauter Victory in Texas Truck Race

    FORT WORTH, Tex. –You might say Johnny Sauter is on a roll.

    Then again, that might be an understatement.

    Passing Matt Crafton near the start/finish line with two laps left in Friday night’s Striping Technology 350 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, Sauter pulled away to win his second straight race in the inaugural NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Chase.

    In the process, he deprived Crafton of a chance to clinch a spot in the Championship 4 finale, set for Nov. 18 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Crafton won a drag race to the stripe against Daniel Hemric to secure the runner-up spot, .836 seconds behind Sauter.

    “This is amazing,” said Sauter, who started 16th in his No. 21 Chevrolet and won for the third time this season, the third time at Texas (having swept the 2012 races) and the 13th time in his career. “Matt was content to keep running the bottom, and I made a couple of runs on that restart (on Lap 130 of 147, after the third and final caution).

    “They got me great track position on the pit stop, and I just kept bottoming the splitter out on the short run, and I could just not fire off. … Matt just kept running the bottom, and I was like, ‘I’m going to the top.’ And I was pretty successful on the top down in (Turns) 3 and 4 all night long—just big momentum.”

    About the only low point of Sauter’s night was his post-race burnout—but that was by design.

    “I’ve got to apologize to the fans for the burnout,” Sauter said. “I know it was lame, but I’ve got to have this truck for Homestead.”

    Crafton, a two-time series champion, overcame a scrape against the outside wall and a suspect battery to run second.

    “We were just off all night,” Crafton said. “I got drove into the fence off Turn 2, and the right-rear tail is moved over quite a bit and we got really free up off the corner. I was trying to manage, and with about four (laps) to go I just got really free and I was like, ‘Oh, boy.’

    “I was hoping that Johnny and the 19 (Hemric) raced each other a lot longer than they did.”

    Polesitter Spencer Gallagher, Sauter’s teammate at GMS Racing, led a race-high 88 laps but lost six positions on pit road before the final restart, thanks to a slow tire change on the right rear of his No. 23 Chevrolet.

    Chase drivers Ben Kennedy and Timothy Peters finished 13th and 14th, respectively, and are currently below the Chase cut line. Peters is fifth in the standings, one point behind Crafton in fourth. Kennedy is sixth, 13 points behind Crafton heading to Phoenix, where the Chase field will be cut from six drivers to the final four next Friday.

    Sauter is the only driver guaranteed to race for the championship at Homestead. William Byron, who leads the series with six victories, finished sixth on Friday and held second place in the Chase standings.

    Christopher Bell came home 11th after late contact with the Toyota of Cameron Hayley and is third in points, but the gap between the second- and fifth-place Chase drivers is a mere five points.

    The only three cautions of the night resulted from the expiration of the caution clock, which runs in 20-minute increments from the drop of a green flag. The previous high number for caution clocks in a single race was two.

    Madsen Joins Big Game Motorsports

    WINDOM, Minn. – One day after Big Game Motorsports released driver Danny Lasoski, the team has named Kerry Madsen as the driver of the No. 2 Muddy sprint car beginning next season.

    “Kerry has proven to be one of the best drivers in the country over the last several years,” Team Owner Tod Quiring said. “We are excited and proud to have him on our team. We are really looking forward to next year.”

    Madsen and the Muddy sponsored No. 2 team will compete in marquee events across the country with the debut scheduled for next February at the DIRTcar Nationals in Florida with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.

    The team schedule will include all of the major sprint car events including the Knoxville Nationals, Kings Royal, Jackson Nationals and Badlands Gold Cup to name a few. The Muddy backed team will also tackle several weekly shows at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, as well as many World of Outlaws races across the country.

    “The entire Big Game Motorsports team is thrilled to have Kerry driving the GoMuddy.com car,” Big Game Motorsports Representative Luke Lundt said. “Kerry is a fierce competitor on the track and will be a great representative for our team and brand.”

    Madsen is just as thrilled about the opportunity provided by Big Game Motorsports.

    “Tod has a big history in the sport,” he said. “I think they have a good team with Guy Forbrook on the wrenches. To me it seems like a simple fit where I can be competitive straight out of the box. It should be a simple transition and I’m hoping to do well.”

    Madsen has spent the last several years racing the Keneric Racing No. 29, but the Australian team shut down its American program shortly after the Knoxville Nationals in August.

    “If you’re going to be successful at sprint car racing there’s things you have to have. They have all the pieces. It felt like the right fit for me to be successful.”

    MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Kyle Larson topped the chart in final Sprint Cup Series practice at Martinsville Speedway.

    The driver of the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet was the fastest in the final practice session with a time of 19.707 and a speed of 96.707 mph. Tony Stewart was second in his No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet with a time of 19.721 and a speed of 96.020 mph. Paul Menard was third in his No. 27 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet with a time of 19.770 and a speed of 95.782 mph. Kyle Busch rounded out the top-five in his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota with a time of 19.777 and a speed of 95.748 mph.

    Brad Keselowski was sixth in his No. 2 Team Penske Ford. Martin Truex Jr. was seventh in his No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota. Joey Logano was eighth in his No. 22 Penske Ford. Joey Logano was second in his No. 22 Team Penske Ford with a time of 19.575 and a speed of 96.736 mph. David Ragan was third in his No. 23 BK Racing Toyota with a time of 19.588 and a speed of 96.671 mph.     The driver of the No. 9 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota was the fastest in the final practice session with a time of 19.687 and a speed of 96.185 mph. Johnny Sauter was second in his No. 21 GMS Racing Chevrolet with a time of 19.749 and a speed of 95.883 mph. Daniel Suarez was third in his No. 51 KBM Toyota with a time of 19.757 and a speed of 95.845 mph. Cole Custer was fourth in his No. 00 JR Motorsports Chevrolet with a time of 19.765 and a speed of 95.806 mph.
