  • NASCAR Updates Driver Participation Guidelines for 2017

NASCAR Updates Driver Participation Guidelines for 2017

New Guidelines Further Elevate Next Generation of Stars; Strengthen Series Identity

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (October 26, 2016) – In an announcement that will put an even brighter spotlight on the next generation of stars and bolster the identity of all three of its national series, NASCAR announced on Wednesday driver participation guidelines for the 2017 season. The new guidelines limit the number of events a premier series driver can race in the NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Starting next season, premier series drivers with more than five years of full-time experience will be eligible to compete in a maximum of 10 races in the XFINITY Series and seven races in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Additionally, drivers with more than five years of full-time premier series experience will be ineligible to compete in the final eight races in each series, as well as the Dash 4 Cash races in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. The final eight races are comprised of the regular season finale and the entirety of the Chase in each series.

Drivers earning premier series points in 2017 also are not eligible to compete in the 2017 NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship Races at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

“The updated guidelines will elevate the stature of our future stars, while also providing them the opportunity to compete against the best in professional motorsports,” said Jim Cassidy, NASCAR senior vice president of racing operations. “These updated guidelines are the result of a collaborative effort involving the entire industry, and will ultimately better showcase the emerging stars of NASCAR.”

Drivers with more than five years of full-time experience in the premier series still can run for an XFINITY Series or Camping World Truck Series championship, provided they have declared for championship points in the respective series.

Wednesday’s announcement signals the next step in NASCAR’s driver participation guideline evolution. Prior to the 2016 season, NASCAR announced that members of the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup field would be ineligible to compete in the 2016 Championship Race in both the NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. In 2011, NASCAR implemented a rule requiring drivers to select one of the three national series in which to collect championship points.

TALLADEGA, Ala. (Oct. 21, 2016) – Roush Fenway Racing has signed a multi-year renewal agreement for driver Ryan Reed to continue to pilot the No. 16 Lilly Diabetes Ford Mustang in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. Reed, who five years ago was told he would never race again after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, qualified for the 2016 inaugural XFINITY Series Chase and scored his first victory in the series last season at Daytona.

“We are very excited to continue our program with Lilly Diabetes,” said Reed, who will make his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. “Not only to continue to drive the No. 16, but more importantly, the opportunity to encourage and educate people who are living with diabetes and those who care for them.  We will continue to share the message about diabetes awareness, specifically the importance of talking to doctors as well as proper nutrition and daily exercise.”

Reed will look to make history this weekend as the only driver actively managing his diabetes to race at the Sprint Cup level. The Bakersfield, Calif., native manages his diabetes through a strict diet and exercise program, the use of a wireless glucose monitoring device to provide in-race, real-time data, and consistent communication with his medical team in California.

“Through sharing his diabetes story with NASCAR fans throughout the country over the past three years, Ryan has inspired thousands of people affected by diabetes to live healthier lives and take an active role in managing their health.  Lilly Diabetes is proud to renew our sponsorship so together we can continue to make a difference in people’s lives,” said Mike Mason, vice president, U.S., Lilly Diabetes.

“Like NASCAR, Lilly has been an American institution for generations. We introduced the world’s first commercialized insulin in 1923, and our innovative medicines and education programs have helped people with diabetes ever since. This sponsorship is another step forward in our drive to help more people who have the disease or care for someone who does.”

Reed posted career highs in Chase races at Kentucky and Dover to advance to the ‘Round of 8’ in the NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase at Charlotte. He is currently only two points outside of the top four, with two races remaining before the series champion is decided in the season finale at Homestead.

Stenhouse Jr. to Honor the Late Bryan Clauson at the Jason Leffler Memorial

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 19, 2016) – Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will return to his dirt-track roots this Thursday night as he drives the No. 39 for the newly formed Clauson-Marshall Racing at the Jason Leffler Classic at Wayne County Speedway to honor his late friend Bryan Clauson.

“I’m always thrilled to race with Tim and this team. I value the friendship and passion he and Bryan have for racing,” Stenhouse, Jr., commented. “This race means a lot to Bryan. The whole racing family comes together to remember an awesome guy and racer.

“I’m looking forward to representing this team and hope I can do even half of what Bryan could do in this car. Bryan’s passing hasn’t gotten easier, but it’s been unbelievable to see the support of so many friends, family and fans. With them, I hope to continue Bryan’s legacy and continue in his winning ways. It helps all of us and I’m glad to be a tiny part of it with this team.”

At Bristol earlier this year, the Olive Branch, Miss. native drove a Bryan Clauson Fastenal tribute scheme to a second-place finish after overcoming a two-lap deficit and a speeding penalty on pit road.  The second-place finish tied his career best finish, also at Bristol in 2014.

After the race on Thursday evening, Stenhouse will travel to Talladega Superspeedway for the Hellmann’s 500. Race coverage is scheduled to air on Sunday, October, 23 at 2 p.m. E.T. on NBCSN and can also be heard on Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SIRIUS Channel 90.

  • Logano Prevails in Drive for the Cure 300 presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina

Logano Prevails in Drive for the Cure 300 presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina

    • In his second race on Sunday, Joey Logano won the NASCAR XFINITY Series Drive for the Cure 300 presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the final race in the XFINITY Chase’s Round of 12; Logano finished 36th in Sunday’s Bank of America 500
    • XFINITY Chase contender Elliott Sadler was second, followed by fellow Chase driver Daniel Suarez in third; Ty Dillon, Brennan Poole, Ryan Sieg and Brandon Jones were eliminated from the Chase

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 9, 2016) – The second race of Joey Logano’s Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedwaywas his best, as the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup contender strapped in for 300 miles of NASCAR XFINITY Series racing and drove to victory in the Drive for the Cure 300 presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina after a spirited battle with fellow Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Larson.

Logano — who finished 36th in the Bank of America 500 — won the XFINITY Series nightcap ahead of Elliott Sadler, Daniel Suarez and Larson when a late restart saw Logano go three-wide with Larson and Justin Allgaier and emerge with the top spot. While Logano left with his 27th career XFINITY Series win, eight drivers left Charlotte feeling like winners: runner-up Sadler and third-place finisher Suarez joined Allgaier, Erik Jones, Blake Koch, Ryan Reed, Brendan Gaughan and Bubba Wallace in the Round of 8 in the inaugural XFINITY Chase.

Drive for the Cure 300 presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Winner Joey Logano (No. 12 PPG Ford): “I knew my only shot was on the restart … I was huffing and puffing and giving it all I got. To come out here and compete at this level shows the depth of this team and Team Penske. It was a long night but a good recovery from earlier in the day, when I tried to knock the wall down. Obviously we had a good car. Maybe we didn’t have the best car but we had something that we could make something happen with. We stayed on the lead lap on that long run. The pit crew did their job. It was an awesome restart on there at the end. It was a lot of fun to be able to do that. We have a great mix of guys and girls from the shop on this team and it’s a good win for them and the first for my crew chief, Brian Wilson. It was a long night for sure but a good recovery. It was a great win and a lot of fun.”

Runner-Up Elliott Sadler (No. 1 OneMain Chevrolet): “We really wanted to win this race. Any time I get to run this pink race car it’s very sentimental to me and my family. My mom wasn’t able to be here this weekend because she is still recovering. All I could think about those last few laps was trying to get by Joey (Logano) and trying to get that win. It just shows how hard my team really works on the car. The thing took off … We have got some really good cars sitting in the shop ready to go for the second round … How we battled and fought tonight gives us some momentum going into the next (races).”
