Truex repeats at the Monster Mile in the BetRivers 200 NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash race

Ryan Truex made it two straight NASCAR Xfinity Series wins at the Monster Mile on Saturday, capturing the BetRivers 200 at his beloved home track.

Truex led just two laps – the final two – after a thrilling final stage featuring weather strategies, hard crashes and a two-overtime finish which saw him edge past Carson Kvapil on the final restart.

“I can’t believe it,” said Truex, driving the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. “Our car was just good at the end when it matters. I felt a little bad running [Carson] up the hill.

“Thank you so much to the fans for being here. Love this track, love this crowd.”

Anthony Alfredo, driving the No. 5 Chevrolet for Our Motorsports, won the final $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus of the year after Jesse Love, Riley Herbst and Ryan Sieg all endured wrecked or troubled machines.

“We came in knowing we were the underdog,” Alfredo said, who finished ninth overall. “We don’t have any technical support. No team alliance. We’ve been punching above our weight. You don’t understand how small our budget is compared to these other teams.

“This is crazy to win the Dash 4 Cash and to come out with a top 10 in a place like Dover is a big deal.”

Justin Allgaier won Stage 1 while Cole Custer, who led a race-high 95 laps, captured Stage 2.

Kvapil held on for second, with Sam Mayer in third, Sheldon Creed in fourth and Custer in fifth.

Kvapil picked the top lane for the final restart and was even with Truex through three-quarters of a lap until the entrance to Turn 4.

“It sucks to get that close,” said Kvapil, who led 14 laps. “I thought we had a fast Chevrolet. I’m really fortunate to be in this situation. It seemed like the top [lane] was so dominant. He just got us there in Turn 3.”

Truex completed the 208 laps/miles with an average speed of 87.395 mph in 2 hours, 22 minutes and 48 seconds. Twenty drivers finished on the lead lap, with 10 caution periods taking up 61 laps.

  • General Tire 150: Zilisch triumphs for first ARCA Menards Series victory

General Tire 150: Zilisch triumphs for first ARCA Menards Series victory

Top speeds. Tough crashes. Triumphant winner.

Just another top start to a NASCAR weekend at the Monster Mile.

Driving the No. 28 Chevrolet for Pinnacle Racing Group, 17-year-old Connor Zilisch notched his first career ARCA victory in the General Tire 150 ARCA Menards Series race Friday at Dover Motor Speedway.

“Those first 70 laps, I was pretty intimidated,” said Zilisch, who is a development driver for Trackhouse Racing. “I just needed to get on the gas. This isn’t the easiest place to make your oval debut. To come here and not only run all the laps but get a win is exciting. These are the places I feel like I need to get better at.

“I couldn’t make any ground [for a while]. The restarts were hectic, but we kept it together. I feel like our preparation is paying off.”

Giovanni Ruggiero, first in the ARCA East standings, placed second (0.986 second behind Zilisch) in the joint ARCA Menards Series/East race. Carson Kvapil was third, Lavar Scott came in fourth and Andres Perez (ARCA Series leader) was fifth.

William Sawalich, who set a qualifying record earlier Friday and led a race-high 67 laps, spun exiting Turn 3 late in the race following a bump from Zilisch. Zilisch took over the lead from there.

“I definitely think I made a mistake there,” said Zilisch, who led 42 laps. “I do think I could have done something differently there to keep him in the race. I got a little tight and I got up into him. I will apologize to him.”

Midway through, on Lap 75, big hits seconds apart against the wall from Christian Rose (exiting Turn 4) and Amber Balcaen (along the frontstretch) brought out the red flag to pause the race. Balcaen suffered a foot injury in the crash.

“Not really sure what happened – [the car] just went straight on me,” Rose said. “It was a big hit. They call this place ‘The Monster’ for a reason.”

Zilisch averaged 98.210 mph across 150 laps in one hour, 31 minutes, 58 seconds to claim the checkered flag. Eight of the 24 drivers who started the race finished on the lead lap. Eight caution periods took up 52 laps.

  • NASCAR, North Wilkesboro Speedway Announce 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race Format

NASCAR, North Wilkesboro Speedway Announce 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race Format

Tire strategy, Qualifying / Pit Crew Challenge, pitting requirements among new format elements; All-Star Fan Vote Opens on NASCAR.com

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 23, 2024) – NASCAR and Speedway Motorsports today announced details for the 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race to be held on Sunday, May 19, for the second consecutive year at the newly paved North Wilkesboro Speedway. While the simplified format will return this season – featuring two heat races to set the All-Star Race starting lineup, a 100-lap All-Star Open, and a 200-lap main event – several new features will debut including a tire strategy element, a new Qualifying / Pit Crew Challenge format and pitting requirements. The spotlight will be on the stars of the sport as they take on these new challenges at the historic .625-mile track in the annual exhibition event for the grand prize of $1 million.

The signature new element in this season’s format centers around tire type and allotment. Potentially, three different tires will be utilized throughout the event weekend— a “prime tire” (the baseline tire assessed in last month’s Goodyear Tire Test at North Wilkesboro Speedway), an “option tire” (slick tires, but made with the same rubber as the wet weather tire, making it a softer tire with more grip and faster wear) and “wet weather” (the wet weather tire only used if the track is wet). The ‘Goodyear Eagle’ lettering will be yellow on the prime tires, red on the option tires, and white on the wet weather tires.

    The particulars on the tires:

    • Teams will be allotted nine sets of tires for the event weekend.
    • For practice, qualifying, the heat races, and the Open, teams will be allotted three sets of prime tires and two sets of option tires.
    • For the All-Star Race, teams will have two sets each of primes and options.
    • All four tires on the car must be of the same type at all times.
    • Only the prime tire will be used during both qualifying sessions.
    • For practice, the heat races, and the NASCAR All-Star Open, teams will have the option to start on any type of tire.
    • All teams will start on the option tire for the All-Star Race.

“After a successful return to North Wilkesboro Speedway last season, we are thrilled to bring the action back to one of NASCAR’s most iconic and storied tracks,” said John Probst, NASCAR Senior Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer. “The spotlight will certainly be on the crew chiefs and drivers as they plan their tire strategy for this special race. In testing, the softer tires were significantly faster — but wore much quicker. Goodyear has been an incredible partner in this All-Star element, and it will be fascinating to watch how crew chiefs and drivers manage this unique challenge.”

The NASCAR All-Star Race will be 200 laps with two All-Star cautions at lap 100, and lap 150. At the lap 100 break, teams must perform a four-tire pit stop, using any tire of their choosing. All laps (caution and green flag) will count, and NASCAR Overtime rules will be in effect.

Saturday’s All-Star Open will give drivers who are not guaranteed a spot in the main event a chance to race their way into the All-Star Race. The 100-lap Open will have an All-Star caution at Lap 50, at which time teams must perform a four-tire pit stop. At the end, three Open drivers will advance to the All-Star Race – the top two race finishers and the Fan Vote Winner. NASCAR All-Star Race Fan Voting is now open on NASCAR.com/fanvote.

“This format will challenge drivers, crew chiefs and pit crews from Friday through Sunday, and strategy will play a huge part in who takes home the $1 million prize,” said Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith. “The All-Star Race has always been a place for innovation, from its very creation in 1985 to racing under the lights, unique paint schemes and double-file restarts. Now we have an old-school, short track format developed by Dale Jr. plus a new twist on tires courtesy of NASCAR and Goodyear. Kevin Harvick gave great input on stepping up the impact of qualifying. Throw it all together at North Wilkesboro and we’ve got something special for the 40th running of the NASCAR All-Star Race.”

All-Star weekend festivities will begin Friday evening with the All-Star Open qualifying and Pit Crew Challenge. While last season’s qualifying was based solely on the results of the Pit Crew Challenge, this season combines the traditional qualifying effort with the Pit Crew Challenge element. Drivers will take the green flag, run one full lap at speed, and on the second lap proceed to one of two NASCAR designated pit stalls for a four-tire stop with mock fuel delivery. When the pit stop is complete, the cars will exit pit road and race back to the checkered flag. The qualifying time will be the total elapsed time from green flag to checkered flag, and the pole sitter will start on the pole for Heat Race 1 and the All-Star.

The pit crew with the fastest stop during the All-Star qualifying attempt (no penalties) is the winner of the Pit Crew Challenge. Timing lines are established one box behind and one box ahead of the NASCAR designated pit stop boxes. Pit Crew Challenge results will determine pit picking order.

Saturday night will feature two 60-lap heat races that will determine the starting lineup for the All-Star Race among drivers already locked into the field. There will be an All-Star caution at lap 30 of each heat race; teams must perform a four-tire pit stop. The results of Heat 1 will establish the inside row, and the results of Heat 2 will establish the outside row. The action-packed weekend will conclude Sunday night with the All-Star Open and All-Star Race.

“The emphasis on tire strategy and returning to an old-school qualifying approach are both great moves to give the entire weekend more impact,” said Harvick, who will call his first NASCAR All-Star Race for FOX Sports. “Being able to walk away from qualifying with both a Pit Crew Challenge champion and a locked-in pole winner elevates the event for both the fans and the teams.”

Drivers eligible for the NASCAR All-Star Race include those who’ve won a points event in either 2023 or 2024, drivers who’ve won a NASCAR All-Star Race and compete fulltime, and drivers who’ve won a NASCAR Cup Series championship and compete fulltime.

Drivers who have already clinched an All-Star Race spot include: AJ Allmendinger, Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, Chris Buescher, Kyle Busch, William Byron, Ross Chastain, Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Larson, Joey Logano, Michael McDowell, Tyler Reddick, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Daniel Suárez, Martin Truex Jr., and Shane van Gisbergen.

The NASCAR All-Star Race will air live on FS1, MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 19.

NASCAR All-Star Race Week ticket packages as well as single day tickets for all May 14 – 19 events are on sale now. Tuesday and Wednesday feature the zMAX CARS Tour with The Reverend 100 Pro Late Model race Tuesday night and the Window World 125 Late Model Stock race Wednesday evening. Erik Jones to Miss Race at Dover Motor Speedway

STATESVILLE, N.C. (April 23, 2024) – Erik Jones, driver of the No. 43 Dollar Tree Toyota Camry XSE for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB™, will not compete in this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Dover Motor Speedway. LEGACY M.C.’s reserve driver Corey Heim will substitute for Jones in this weekend’s 400-mile race.

Jones was involved in a multi-car accident on Lap 157 during Sunday afternoon’s GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway and the 27-year-old was checked and released from the track infield care center. He was then transported to UAB University Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., for further evaluation and testing. Jones returned home to North Carolina on Sunday night and met with specialists in the Charlotte area where it was determined that Jones suffered a compression fracture in a lower vertebra.

Although there has been no timeline set for Jones’s return behind the wheel, he will be in attendance in Dover to help call the race with his crew. Heim, 21, a native of Marietta, Ga., currently competes in the NASCAR Truck Series for TRICON Garage and in the Xfinity Series for Sam Hunt Racing.

“Erik’s long-term health is our number one priority,” said Jimmie Johnson, co-owner of LEGACY M.C. “It will be great to see him at the track Sunday and we intend to give him the time it takes to recover properly. I know Corey will do a great job behind the wheel for the CLUB. In the meantime, our thoughts are with Erik and his wife Holly – they have our total support.”

LEGACY M.C. will request a medical waiver for Jones to remain eligible for the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

  • Dixon Makes Magic To Pull Off Improbable Long Beach Win

Dixon Makes Magic To Pull Off Improbable Long Beach Win

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Sunday, April 21, 2024) – Scott Dixon proved yet again Sunday that almost nothing is impossible for him behind the wheel of a race car, winning the Acura Long Beach Grand Prix with a dramatic blend of patience and aggression over the closing laps.

Nobody in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES saves fuel better than Dixon, and he drove the last 34 laps of the 85-lap street race on one tank of Shell 100% Renewable Race Fuel in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda to hold off a hard-charging Colton Herta – who was on a more conventional, less risky fuel strategy – by .9798 of a second.

“That was tough; that was really tough,” Dixon said. “Honestly, I didn’t think we were going to make it, and they kept giving me a (fuel) number, and it just wasn’t getting … I was close but not enough. Luckily, we were on the safe side there.”

Dixon, who started eighth, even had enough fuel left in his Honda engine to perform a celebratory burnout after claiming his first victory of the season and the 57th win of his legendary career. It was his second victory on the 11-turn, 1.968-mile Long Beach temporary street circuit, joining his triumph in 2015.

Reigning series champion Alex Palou finished third in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Series points leader Josef Newgarden placed a disappointing fourth in the No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet after looking to be Dixon’s biggest threat until Herta’s No. 26 Gainbridge Honda fielded by Andretti Global made contact with him late in the race.

Marcus Ericsson rounded out the top five in the No. 28 Delaware Life Honda fielded by Andretti Global, as that team and Chip Ganassi Racing each claimed two of the top five finishing positions.

The 27-car field splintered into two groups of differing strategies on Lap 15 when the only caution period of the race was triggered by Christian Rasmussen’s spin and wall contact in Turn 4 in the No. 20 GuyCare Chevrolet fielded by Ed Carpenter Racing.

Then race leader Will Power and Dixon led a group of drivers that dove into the pits during that caution, with Kyle Kirkwood, Marcus Armstrong, Graham Rahal and Linus Lundqvist among the other leading lights adopting that tactic.

That strategy play handed the lead to Newgarden on Lap 17, and he kept the top spot when green-flag racing resumed on Lap 19.

For the next 45 laps, the early-stopping drivers used every tactic in their bag of skills to save fuel, lifting the throttle early in corners and babying it on acceleration. Every engineer’s calculation on the pit wall showed the margin to make it to the finish on just one more stop would be razor-thin without another caution period.

Meanwhile, the rest of the contenders entered the pits between Laps 30 and 33 for their first stops, with Herta going the longest to Lap 33. The fuel-sipping group then pitted for the final time on Laps 52-53.

The differing strategies then exploded into a crescendo of drama after the second group pitted for the final time between Laps 58-62.

Newgarden emerged in second, about three seconds behind Dixon, after every contender finished their final stops. Newgarden’s tires were seven laps fresher than Dixon’s, and he didn’t have to worry about saving fuel.

Nearly everyone in the sold-out reserved seat grandstands figured it would only be a matter of time before Newgarden passed Dixon for the lead and perhaps an unbeaten start to the season, as he won the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding on March 10.

    Everyone but Dixon, that is.

Dixon masterfully balanced saving fuel with short bursts of push-to-pass to parry Newgarden over the closing laps. Still, Newgarden drove to within a half-second of Dixon on Lap 71 and appeared to be biding his time.

Newgarden then pulled close to Dixon’s gearbox entering the hairpin leading to the long front straightaway on Shoreline Drive on Lap 77 and appeared to be setting him up for a passing attempt on the straight. But that never happened, as Herta nudged Newgarden from behind entering the hairpin. The impact lifted Newgarden’s rear wheels off the ground and engaged his anti-stall function, letting Herta and Palou pass him and dropping him to fourth.

“It seemed pretty obvious,” Newgarden said. “He just misjudged it and ran into me.

“I’m not saying we were going to get Dixon. It was very, very difficult for me to get the run I needed to. I think traffic was going to provide me an opportunity, so that run right there, I was really excited about it. I think that was going to be my last chance. Never know if I would have pulled it off or not.”

Said Herta: “I think he (Newgarden) set up pretty wide and was cutting back in and was a little slower at apex, but ultimately it’s up to me to carry the right speed into the corner and not run into the back of people, and I just misjudged it.”

That incident gave Dixon breathing room from behind as he navigated lapped traffic ahead. Herta pulled to within .328 of a second with three laps remaining, but Dixon was given clearance on the last lap to use all the fuel-gulping push-to-pass he had left and pulled away for the win.

It was yet another chapter in Dixon’s saga of pulling victory from nowhere with fuel saving and pit wall strategy. Just last season, he earned unlikely wins on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and World Wide Technology Raceway in August with similar tactics.

“It was way up there,” Dixon said when asked where this win ranked among his strategic victories. “The stress level was high. Those guys were coming fast and strong. I think we were off by a lap or two of making it easy. Other fuel races I’ve done I’ve had it under control for the full stint.”

Reigning FIA Formula 2 champion Theo Pourchaire finished 11th in his NTT INDYCAR SERIES debut in the No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, the top rookie in the race. Frenchman Pourchaire is substituting for David Malukas, continuing to recover from surgery to repair left wrist injuries suffered in a preseason mountain biking accident.

There’s just one week until the next race, the Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix powered by AmFirst on Sunday, April 28 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. Live coverage starts at 1 p.m. ET on NBC, Peacock, INDYCAR LIVE and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

IROC Returns July 19-20 at Lime Rock Park

IROC Joins SpeedTour All-Star Race for Star-Studded Weekend at Lime Rock

CHARLOTTE (April 19, 2024) – IROC Holdings LLC has announced the first IROC event to be held in nearly 20 years is set to take place July 19-20 at Lime Rock Park as part of the SpeedTour All-Star Race weekend. Featuring both an on-track racing exhibition and static display, the event will reunite original IROC competitors with cars actually raced in the legendary series.

IROC (International Race of Champions) is a series that held races from 1973 to 2006, which brought together the greatest drivers from all forms of motorsport to race identical cars on historic tracks for an all-star extravaganza. In early 2024, NASCAR Hall of Fame member Ray Evernham and former NASCAR Cup Series team owner and venture capitalist Rob Kauffman founded IROC Holdings LLC and announced they had acquired the rights to the iconic IROC brand. The return of IROC to the track this July marks the first step in revitalizing this iconic brand.

“We are thrilled to announce the first IROC event since 2006 will take place at historic Lime Rock Park,” said Evernham. “I began my professional racing career at IROC, so to be part of the team bringing the brand back to life and to the fans is extremely gratifying.”

“The event at Lime Rock Park will serve as a great way to kick off what is sure to be an exciting journey to reignite the magic IROC had during its original 30+ year run,” said Rob Kauffman. “We hope this is just one of many announcements for IROC in 2024.”

The IROC event at Lime Rock Park will feature original IROC racecars on track and on display in the IROC paddock throughout the weekend. Fans will have the opportunity to see nearly every generation of IROC racecar with many being driven by former IROC drivers. A fan-forward display, the IROC paddock will feature appearances by some of the original IROC racers, Q&A sessions and IROC-branded merchandise.

IROC has also opened entry applications for anyone who owns IROC racecars and would like to display or drive them in the event. Those interested in applying can visit iroc-racing.com for more information. In addition, IROC has simultaneously launched their official webstore at shop.iroc-racing.com.

IROC’s return will take place during the SpeedTour All-Star Race weekend at Lime Rock Park, hosted by Parella Motorsports Holdings (PMH). The event will also feature the 60-minute SpeedTour All-Star Race, which gathers icons from Formula 1, NASCAR, INDYCAR and IMSA, and pairs them with competitors from the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli’s CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series to compete as co-drivers in a race that airs live on MAVTV.

“We are thrilled to add IROC to our lineup for the SpeedTour All-Star Race weekend,” said Tony Parella, CEO of PMH. “This is quickly shaping up to be one of the most exciting motorsports events in recent memory—we already have 16 legends committed to race in the SpeedTour All-Star race, with a field that includes Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 champions, IROC winners and drivers who have stood atop the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Nürburgring, and Daytona. IROC adds even more star power to an already exciting event. IROC was where the best-of-the-best drivers went to race and prove themselves among their competitors. As Ray [Evernham] and Rob [Kauffman] relaunch the IROC brand, we’re thrilled to be a part of this first outing.”

Whether you’re coming to see IROC, the SpeedTour All-Star Race, or any of the other groups racing at Lime Rock Park, a single ticket will get you in for all the action. Single-day and weekend tickets are available at SpeedTour.net with advanced-purchase discounts for both spectator tickets and camping packages. Kids 12 and under are free with the purchase of an adult ticket, and all active-duty military and veterans with a valid military ID will also gain free admission.

Program aims to strengthen relationships with those that helped build the sport

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 18, 2024) — NASCAR today announced the launch of the NASCAR Alumni Network, a program that will help the sport – and its fans – stay connected with former competitors.

The program is open to past NASCAR competitors with a focus on those that competed in more than 100 races in their careers. Members of the NASCAR Alumni Network will have the chance to engage with current and past industry members through exclusive networking opportunities, including an annual at-track reunion.

Amber Wells, a 25-year veteran of NASCAR who manages the NASCAR Hall of Fame for the company, has been named executive director of the NASCAR Alumni Network.

“The relationships built in NASCAR are very special,” Wells said. “We’ve seen tremendous fellowship in the connections rekindled through the NASCAR Hall of Fame and we want to extend that to all past competitors. Our hope is that this program will not just connect members with us, but also with former teammates and competitors.”

The inaugural NASCAR Alumni Network reunion will be held at Darlington Raceway during the Goodyear 400 on Sunday, May 12. The public appearance schedule of those in attendance will be announced at a later date.

Former drivers, crew chiefs, team owners, team members and other industry competitors are invited to apply to join the NASCAR Alumni Network at www.nascar.com/alumninetwork.

The program launch coincides with “NASCAR Legends Presented by Geico,” a four-week campaign that centers on telling stories of notable traditions and prominent pieces of NASCAR history. The campaign begins this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway and continues for four weeks, culminating at the NASCAR throwback race weekend at Darlington Raceway May 10-12. MUSTANG DARK HORSE SET FOR NASCAR PACE CAR DEBUT THIS WEEKEND AT TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY

DEARBORN, Mich, April 18, 2024 – Fresh off a memorable 60th anniversary Mustang event in Charlotte on April 17, the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse will make its NASCAR pace car debut this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway.

In honor of Mustang’s birthday, the pace car will sport a special 60th anniversary decal recognizing the milestone as will all Ford cars racing in the event.

“This has been a great week of recognizing all that Mustang has brought to us at Ford and Ford Performance over the last 60 years, and we’re excited to keep that momentum going this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway,” said Jeannee Kirkaldy, global motorsports marketing manager, Ford Performance Motorsports. “We’ve made it clear how important Mustang is to us by racing it all around the world, including here in the United States, where drivers, fans and media have embraced the Ford Mustang Dark Horse model in NASCAR.”

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse swept the front row in three of the first five races this season, which included Team Penske driver Joey Logano winning the pole for the season-opening Daytona 500 with a speed of 181.947 mph.

“There’s no question that our Ford Mustang Dark Horse has speed and is the best-looking car on the track,” said defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney. “I think the Ford Performance group has done a great job getting the car ready for this season, and hopefully we can end Mustang Week on a good note by winning on Sunday.”

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse is the most track-capable 5.0-liter V8 street legal Mustang ever thanks to a special team of engineers that worked for more than three years on creating the new model.

This marks the first of six races in which the world’s best-selling sports car will take its place in front of the field with races at Dover Motor Speedway (Apr. 26-28), Darlington Raceway (May 10-12), Nashville Superspeedway (June 28-30), Chicago Street Race (July 5-7) and Martinsville Speedway (Nov. 1-3) scheduled as well.

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse will pace the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday before taking center stage at the front of the NASCAR Cup Series field for Sunday’s 500-mile race, which is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. ET.
