Carson Hocevar Takes the Checkered Flag at Miami; Joins, Corey Heim, Grant Enfinger and Ben Rhodes in Championship 4

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Carson Hocevar secured his first NASCAR CRATSMAN Truck Series Championship 4 appearance with a victory Saturday in the Baptist Health Cancer Care 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway earning all four of his career series wins this season – the trophy Saturday most impactful among them.

Hocevar put his No. 42 Niece Motorsports Chevrolet into the lead with 11 laps remaining and held off the hard-charging Zane Smith by 2.705-seconds to claim the win over the reigning series champion, whose runner-up effort was disqualified by NASCAR after a post-race technical inspection found the defending series champion’s No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford was illegal – using an unapproved windshield support.

“We are disappointed in the disqualification,’’ Front Row Motorsports said in a statement after the NASCAR inspecition. “We will continue to work and discuss with NASCAR officials back at the NASCAR R&D Center in Concord, N.C. before making any further comment.’’

The DQ moved ThorSport Racing’s Ben Rhodes into runner-up on the afternoon helping him to advance to the Playoffs – prevailing in a tiebreaker with rookie Nick Sanchez; the polesitter who finished 17th after making contact with another truck coming to pit road for his final stop.

Regular season champion, TRICON Garage’s Corey Heim, GMS Racing’s Grant Enfinger and Hocevar’s Niece Motorsports teammate Bailey Curry rounded out the top five at Homestead.

Heim, Hocevar, Enfinger and Rhodes will now race for the championship Nov. 3 at Phoenix Raceway.

Hocevar celebrated the clutch win by climbing high atop the flag stand to claim the checkered flag in person. He threw it down to the cheering fans behind the fence then climbed back down on the grandstand side to high-five fans and celebrate the biggest win of his life – to date.

“It kills me I can’t do a burn-out but we have to take this truck to Phoenix,’’ a grinning Hocevar said. “This truck was so good. We just got behind on pit stops and just lost track position which was unfortunate, but man, it’s so good to feel [like this]. I love it.

“I thought we could win today with our truck, even with all the setbacks from the debris and everything, we had a shot to win and we did just that.’’

The battle for that final Playoff position was as dramatic as the fight for the victory.

Rhodes came into this final regular season race only five points behind Sanchez for the fourth championship-eligible transfer position. He finished 24th in the opening stage and 10th in the second stage. It still left him outside looking into the Championship 4, so Rhodes’ ThorSport team opted to pit for fresh tires early and out of pit sequence. The move allowed his No. 99 ThorSport Ford to take the race lead as the other frontrunners pit later.

He held the point with 30 laps remaining only to have Hocevar and Smith chase him back down. Hocevar passed him with 11 laps remaining, Smith a lap later.

“We failed Ben today, we didn’t give him a very good truck and he bailed us out at the end there,’’ Rhodes’ crew chief Rich Lushes said. “It was the only call we had. We had to do something different than everybody else and it all worked out so I guess we’re going to [championship] again.’’

It was a heartbreaking ending for the 22-year old Sanchez, who is from nearby Miami and raced often at Homestead-Miami Speedway as he was coming up the junior ranks. He won the pole and led the opening five laps, only to see his Playoff hopes in jeopardy after a miscue approaching his final pit stop with 34 laps remaining. His No. 2 Rev Racing Chevrolet hit the back of Tanner Gray’s truck as the two were slowing to enter pit road causing noticeable damage to Sanchez’ Chevrolet.

“Obviously I lost a lot of time there and just lost time in the pits trying to fix it,’’ Sanchez said. “Just my fault, no two ways to it. I really didn’t know the 15 was pitting and didn’t slow down [enough]. So that’s on me. I apologize to my team. They’re going to support me. To miss by one-point is pretty rough, but all you can do it go to Phoenix and try to win.’

Heim led a race best 57 of the 134 laps and swept both Stage victories. His third place finish marked the series best 15th-consecutive top-10 finish of the season.

“I really thought we had them covered today, I mean we were smoking the first two stages and kind of waiting on the third stage and then it went out like a light switch so we’ll look everything over,’’ Heim said, adding, “We’ve got bigger things on the horizon so we’ll focus on that.’’

Stewart Friesen, Matt Crafton, Rajah Caruth, Ty Majeski and Chase Purdy rounded out the top 10 finishing order. Majeski joins Smith, Sanchez and Christian Eckes to be eliminated from Playoff contention.

Eckes finished 20th after what looked like a sure-bet top-10 finish was hampered by penalties and miscues on the afternoon. He was called for moving lanes on a restart and another time for speeding on his pit road exit late in the race.

“We had a truck able to advance and just kept making mistakes,’’ Eckes said. “Just wasn’t good enough today.’’

IndyCar star Marco Andretti finished 18h in his second series start in the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet. He’s scheduled to race at Phoenix in two weeks.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series concludes the season with the Craftsman 150 at the one-mile Phoenix Raceway on Nov. 3 (10:30 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Chevrolet Clinches 2023 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Manufacturer Championship

    11th Title for Silverado

DETROIT (October 21, 2023) – Chevrolet has clinched the first championship title of the season in the NASCAR national ranks by earning the 2023 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) Manufacturer Championship. This marks the 11th time in NCTS history that Chevrolet has captured the title.

Chevrolet has been racing the Silverado model exclusively in the NCTS since the series’ inception in 1995, producing 275 all-time victories and 14 driver championships – both of which are series-leading feats.

“Winning the Manufacturer Championship title is a tremendous accomplishment for everyone involved in Chevrolet’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series program,” said Dayne Pierantoni, GM Racing Program Manager for the NASCAR Truck Series. “The dedicated and focused effort among Chevrolet’s teams, engineers and technical partners throughout the season have resulted in this prestigious title. Congratulations to all on winning the 2023 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Manufacturer Championship, and we are looking forward to a strong finish to the season.”

Five drivers from five different Chevrolet teams have driven to victory lane in the NCTS this season, earning a combined 13 wins with 22 races complete. Team Chevy drivers contributing to those wins include NCTS full-time competitors Carson Hocevar (four wins) and Christian Eckes and Grant Enfinger (three wins each), as well as Team Chevy NASCAR Cup Series drivers Kyle Busch (two wins) and Kyle Larson (one win). William Byron and Chandler Smith also collected finishes that contributed to this season’s manufacturer championship title.

In pursuit of the 2023 NCTS Driver Championship, Chevrolet maintained 50 percent of the series’ playoff field through both rounds of its postseason competition, with Carson Hocevar and Grant Enfinger advancing to the Championship Four to compete for the championship title at Phoenix Raceway.

  • RILEY HERBST SCORES FIRST XFINITY WIN AT LAS VEGAS

RILEY HERBST SCORES FIRST XFINITY WIN AT LAS VEGAS

LAS VEGAS, NV – October 16, 2023 – Stewart-Haas Racing’s #98 Riley Herbst won Saturday’s Alsco Uniforms 302 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, marking his first win in the Xfinity Series. The win also marked Stewart-Haas Racing’s 24th Xfinity Series victory and 100th win overall.

“Congratulations to Tony, Gene, Davin, Riley, and everyone at Stewart-Haas Racing on the race win at Las Vegas,” said Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines. “Both Stewart-Haas cars were fast throughout the day. Riley raced his way from the back of the field and dominated at his hometown track for the win.”

“Oh my goodness. I love this town. I love this team. Davin Restivo believes in me, but I have to give a big shout out to Richard Boswell because I wouldn’t be the person I am or the race car driver without him. I can’t thank Monster Energy enough, Mitch Covington, Dave Gowan. Everybody said I couldn’t do it and those two people stuck behind my my whole career. You don’t even know what this means and what this takes off my chest. I can’t believe it. I love you Las Vegas. Let’s go,” commented Herbst.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Cole Custer started Saturday’s race from P2 while Riley Herbst qualified in P8 but started the race at the rear of the field. With 10 of 45 laps remaining in Stage 1, Custer passed Chandler Smith to take the lead and win the stage by 0.392 seconds. A multi-car wreck at the beginning of the second stage red-flagged the race for nearly nine minutes to clean up the debris. Custer maintained the lead throughout the second stage until Riley Herbst made a last lap pass to win Stage 2. During the break before the final stage, all the cars on the lead lap pitted and Herbst won the race off pit road. With 75 laps remaining, Herbst held a 4-second lead over teammate Cole Custer. After a final round of green flag pit stops for new tires and fuel, Herbst cycled back to the lead with 56 laps to go and didn’t look back. Herbst took the checkered flag with a margin of 14.959 seconds over second place John Hunter Nemechek, leaving only 10 cars on the lead lap.

Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Cole Custer finished in P3.

The NASCAR Cup Series also raced at Las Vegas on Sunday. RFK Racing’s Brad Keselowski and Chris Buescher finished in P4 and P10, Team Penske’s Joey Logano finished in P11, and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola and Kevin Harvick finished in P13 and P15.

Both the NASCAR Xfinity and Cup Series head to Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida this weekend.

  • Matt Mills Joins Niece Motorsports Full Time in 2024

Matt Mills Joins Niece Motorsports Full Time in 2024

SALISBURY, N.C. (Oct. 12, 2023) – Matt Mills will join Niece Motorsports full time in 2024, piloting the No. 42 Chevrolet Silverado for the full NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule. Mills and the No. 42 will race with support from J.F. Electric and Utilitra.

“I’m really excited to join the Niece Motorsports team for the full Truck Series season next year,” said Mills. “This is a great opportunity for me to get into top-tier equipment. It felt good to get on track this year and show speed, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to continue that. I’m so thankful to everyone at J.F. Electric and Utilitra for believing in me and their continued support.”

Mills impressed this season in the No. 51 Chevrolet, showing speed in both of his starts at Richmond Raceway and the Milwaukee Mile. The 26-year-old driver earned a career-best fifth-place finish at Richmond Raceway.

With current driver Carson Hocevar transitioning to a full time NASCAR Cup Series ride next season, Mills steps into a ride that has earned three wins in 2023, along with 10 top-five and 12 top-10 finishes.

“I think a lot of people took notice of Matt this year at Richmond and Milwaukee,” said Niece Motorsports General Manager Cody Efaw. “He’ll be a great addition to our organization as we look to continue the success the 42 team had this season. Matt has a lot of laps under his belt in both the Truck and Xfinity Series. It’s tough to get in these trucks just a few times a year and show speed like Matt did, so I think there will be a lot of growth next season as he’s able to race week after week.”

The full-season effort will race with support from Mills’ longtime partners J.F. Electric and Utilitra.

Electric CEO Greg Fowler. “Our support stems from a strong belief in Matt’s hard work and driving capabilities, and with the solid backing of the Niece Motorsports team, we are optimistic about the prospects of the upcoming season. • Marco Andretti to Pilot Spire Motorsports Chevy Silverado at Homestead, Phoenix

Marco Andretti to Pilot Spire Motorsports Chevy Silverado at Homestead, Phoenix

Kin Insurance, Parity Week by Gainbridge® to Round out 2023 Campaign

CONCORD, N.C. (October 12, 2023) – Marco Andretti will return to the seat of Spire Motorsports No. 7 Chevrolet Silverado for the final two NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) races of the 2023 season.

Group 1001 is an investor in Kin Insurance, which will be featured as the team’s primary sponsor for next weekend’s Baptist Health Cancer Care 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Meanwhile, Parity Week by Gainbridge® will then assume the primary position aboard Andretti’s Chevy Silverado for the November 3 NCTS season finale at Phoenix Raceway.

Andretti made his first career NCTS start for Spire Motorsports earlier this season at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course where he started seventh and came home with a respectable 19th-place finish. The Nazareth, Penn., native is the 2022 Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) Series Champion.

“I had a lot of fun driving for Spire Motorsports at Mid-Ohio,” said Andretti. “The end result wasn’t reflective of the pace we had out of the gate, but I learned a lot about how these trucks handle and what to expect. I want to expand my limited stock car experience and get some laps in on the bigger ovals. Homestead and Phoenix are going to be very different from the ovals I raced with the SRX Series and, obviously, much different from Mid-Ohio, which is what I want.

“I’ve driven both of these race tracks in IndyCar, but with much higher g-forces and a lot more throttle. We’ll only have 20 minutes of practice and then we go right into qualifying. I’ll be thrown back into the deep end again, but that’s the best way to learn. I spent some time on the race simulator and that was promising, so we’ll see how that translates to the track. I love working with Bono (Manion) and everyone at Spire. I also really appreciate Group 1001 and Kin Insurance for their support. If I have it my way, we’ll just be getting started.”

Andretti, 36, has made 251 career IndyCar starts, having earned six pole positions, a pair of wins and 20 podium finishes. He’s made five IndyCar starts at Homestead-Miami Speedway and calls a runner-up effort in 2008 his venue best. His best finish in three races at Phoenix Raceway came in April 2018 when he finished 12th.

Kin Insurance is reimagining a 100-plus-year-old industry and modernizing it with technology and an aptitude to serve markets where insurance is harder to get due to extreme weather. Kin Insurance is growing rapidly in Florida and other coastal states, where it insures $45 billion in assets, attracting homeowners who aren’t being well served by other carriers.

“Group 1001 is proud to share the spotlight with Kin Insurance on Marco Andretti’s truck at Homestead,” said Micky Hervitz, head of G1001 Innovations, a Group 1001 company. “We are excited to work with an innovator like Kin Insurance that is growing exceptionally fast in Florida. They have doubled down in their commitment to insuring homeowners in Florida and that makes them a perfect fit for Homestead.”

Parity Week by Gainbridge® is a celebration of three pioneers in women’s sports centered around three flagship events the week of November 6-12, hosted by Billie Jean King, Annika Sorenstam and Lyn. St. James, respectively.

“Spire Motorsports is thrilled to have Marco Andretti back in our No. 7 Chevy Silverado for the final two NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series races of 2023,” said Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson. “He qualified and ran really well at Mid-Ohio and if a couple things fall our way, he has a much better finish. Marco has plenty of experience at both tracks in an Indy car and there’s going to be a learning curve for him in the truck, but we expect him to do well and have some fun. We all know what’s at stake when the name Andretti is above the door. At the same time, we’re proud to welcome Kin Insurance for Homestead and to highlight an initiative as important as Parity Week by Gainbridge® at the season finale at Phoenix Raceway.”

The Baptist Health Cancer Care 200 from Homestead-Miami Speedway will be televised live on FS1 Saturday, October 21 beginning at noon Eastern Daylight Time. The 22nd of 23 races on the 2023 NCTS schedule will be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.

Spire Motorsports, Carson Hocevar, Agree to Multi-Year Contract

CONCORD, N.C. (October 10, 2023) – Today, Spire Motorsports announced it has agreed to a multi-year contract with three-time NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) race winner and 2023 championship contender Carson Hocevar to drive the team’s No. 77 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS).

Hocevar, 20, made his NCS debut for Spire Motorsports June 4 at World Wide Technology Raceway and has since competed five more times in NASCAR’s premier division for Legacy Motor Club. He earned an impressive career/series best 11th-place finish at the Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway in just his fourth start.

The Portage, Mich., native has been a standout at every level in which he’s competed, beginning with USAC quarter midgets and now, culminating at NASCAR’s highest level.

“I mean, anybody in my position wants to be a Cup Series driver,” said Hocevar. “That’s what you dream about when you’re young. You want to race on Sundays. So, my opportunity to run a few times this year, to run on Sunday and get ready, I feel more than prepared to get in the No. 77 car with Spire. That team is growing exponentially and I’m just excited for everything. I have a unique opportunity to build something and grow with it, while growing myself at the same time. For what we’ve been able to do from the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series to Cup is pretty crazy. I know it seems like a big jump. With all the tools and resources, and everybody at Spire Motorsports, they have put a lot of faith in me, and I have a lot of faith in them. We all have faith in the whole program. I feel like we can come out of the gate like we’ve done this for years.”

Spire Motorsports was founded in 2018 and has logged 280 Cup Series starts, posting one win, five top fives and nine top 10s. Since then, its teams and drivers have become Cup Series mainstays.

Hocevar will be teamed with Corey LaJoie, driver of the team’s No. 7 Chevrolet and rising star Zane Smith, who will campaign the team’s third entry on behalf of Trackhouse Racing.

Following the 2023 season, the team will relocate from its current Concord, N.C., headquarters to Mooresville, N.C. Earlier this month, Spire Motorsports announced the acquisition of a third NASCAR charter and will house an additional NCS entry for Smith.

“Corey and I have a great relationship,” said Hocevar. “Obviously, that’s going to exponentially grow when we spend day-to-day and week-on-week together, talking in the same meetings, working with the same people and same group, trying to pull the rope in the same direction. We’ve already started. He seems to have a lot of interest in what I’m doing, what my cars are driving like, and vice versa. We’ve started to compare driving notes a little bit. We talk about what each other is doing. I’m sure we’ll constantly be making ourselves go faster. There’s not a race within the shop, but we’ll work to make each other better.

“Me and Zane have talked a little bit and compared driver notes, too, at the Cup race at Texas a couple weeks ago. Obviously, he’s coming in for a year at Spire so we talked a little bit. But, at the same time, we’re racing each other for a Truck Series championship so we compared Cup notes but stopped right there.”

Hocevar is currently second in the NCTS championship standings with two races remaining, just 10 points outside the top spot heading into the division’s penultimate race next weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

He made his NCTS debut August 1, 2019 at Eldora Speedway and, since then, has collected one pole, 20 top-five and 32 top-10 finishes, including five runner-up efforts. He finished 10th in NCTS points in 2021 and 2022.

Hocevar began racing USAC quarter midgets when he was seven-years-old and amassed 79 feature wins and 15 national championships. He has close ties to fellow Michigan driver Johnny Benson Jr., a former NASCAR Xfintiy Series (NXS) and NCTS Champion.

Hocevar earned his first super late model victory at Berlin (Mich.) Raceway at just 13-years-old and went on to win the track’s premier division championship in 2017. He won the famed Winchester 400 super late model race at Winchester (Ind.) Speedway in 2020 and continues to be a regular at some of the nation’s most high-profile pavement super late model races.

In addition to his NCS debut, Hocevar has made four NXS starts for Spire Motorsports in 2023, with a pair of top-10 finishes coming in May at Darlington Raceway (sixth) and Charlotte Motor Speedway (eighth).

“Carson Hocevar is a proven winner and excels with every opportunity,” said Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson. “He’s an undeniable talent and reminds me a lot of a young Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski. We’re thrilled to have him join the Spire Motorsports family and help us continue to raise our competitive bar. Carson has driven the wheels off everything he’s ever raced and done more with less on multiple occasions. He has a knack for getting the most out of his equipment and that speaks directly to his desire behind the wheel. His attitude is infectious and he’s the kind of guy who’s just fun to be around. We think he’ll complement Corey and Zane very well.

“We’re also very grateful to Ty Dillon for everything he’s done for our organization and the No. 77 team, in particular. Ty came to Spire Motorsports after the 2022 season and has put his best foot forward. He’s done everything we’ve asked of him. We know he’ll land with a top-flight race team and wish him the very best.”

In the meantime, Hocevar is determined not to be distracted from the task at hand – pursuing NCTS championship honors for Niece Motorsports. He’ll also continue in his role with LEGACY MOTOR CLUB at the controls of the No. 42 Chevrolet for the final four races of the 2023 season.

“I’ve always been super easy going and I just kind of let things do what they need to do,” offered Hocevar. “If it was anything other than racing, I’d be overwhelmed and stressed and worried but, once I’m in a race car and put a helmet on, I forget anything (else) is happening.”

Matt Kenseth Joins LEGACY MOTOR CLUB™ as a Competition Advisor

STATESVILLE, N.C. (October 10, 2023) — LEGACY MOTOR CLUB™ today announced 2023 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee and 2003 Winston Cup Series Champion Matt Kenseth as a Competition Advisor. In this role, Kenseth will provide guidance and strategy on the competition side, serving as a mentor to drivers Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek, as well as assisting the Club throughout its transition to Toyota for the 2024 season.

“Jimmie and I have so much respect for each other as both competitors and friends – we are alike in many ways and at similar points in our careers,” said Kenseth. “This is a great opportunity for me to be a resource for two extremely talented drivers and help on the racing operations side with this transition to Toyota. I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish together.”

Club co-owners Johnson and Maury Gallagher are optimistic about the alliance with Kenseth. As history goes, Johnson and Kenseth’s 2013 NASCAR Cup Series chase to the championship featured a spirited battle between the two drivers. Kenseth won seven races during that season – as opposed to Johnson’s six wins – but after chasing each other for several weeks – including a tie for the points lead leaving Martinsville Speedway – Kenseth finished second in the standings as Johnson won his sixth career title.

“Not only is Matt an excellent driver and a fierce competitor, he’s also a great friend,” Johnson said. “This alliance makes so much sense. Matt is extremely smart, has worked with Toyota while racing for Joe Gibbs Racing, and is still as competitive as ever. He’s a natural-born athlete and as fit as I have ever seen him. I’m so glad he is willing to share his knowledge and experience with us, and we look forward to all Matt has to offer.”

Kenseth, who stepped away from full-time competition in 2020 has stayed busy with family, competing in the 2022 Boston Marathon where he finished with a time of 3:01:40, and celebrating his 2023 NASCAR Hall of Fame induction. Over the course of his 20-year Cup Series career, Kenseth had 39 victories at 19 different tracks and won the 2003 NASCAR Cup Series Championship. Kenseth is a two-time DAYTONA 500 champion, the 2000 Rookie of the Year, a Southern 500 winner, a Coca-Cola 600 winner, and the 2004 International Race of Champions (IROC) champion. He qualified for the “NASCAR Playoffs” in 13 of 14 seasons attempted. In addition to his 39 wins, Kenseth recorded 182 top-five and 331 top-10 finishes in 697 starts, as well as 20 pole position awards.

Kenseth and Joey Cohen, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB’s vice president of racing operations, worked together at Roush Racing when Cohen was an engineer for the team.

“Matt is going to help make this transition to Toyota smooth,” said Cohen. “He is one of the best drivers out there, and even though he is no longer behind the wheel, his perspective and advice will be crucial heading into next season for both our drivers and crews.”

Kenseth will assume the role within LEGACY MOTOR CLUB immediately. For more information on Matt Kenseth and his stories career, log on to: www.MattKenseth.com

    Allmendinger Rules The ROVAL™

    • A.J. Allmendinger won Sunday’s Bank of America ROVAL™ 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, his first win of the NASCAR Cup Series season and the third of his career
    • William Byron, Kyle Busch, Ty Gibbs and Joey Logano rounded out the top five; Busch, Bubba Wallace, Brad Keselowski and Ross Chastain were eliminated from the Playoffs

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 8, 2023) – A.J. Allmendinger has no teaching degree, but he took 36 of NASCAR’s best drivers to ROVAL™ school on Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Allmendinger had a faultless drive in holding off a hard-charging William Byron to win the Bank of America ROVAL™ 400, continuing a string of scoring at least one victory on the ROVAL™ every year since 2019.

Allmendinger’s ROVAL™ triumphs prior to Sunday, though, were in the Drive for the Cure 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race. This one was under the NASCAR Cup Series spotlight, and no one – not even Byron, the series’ winningest driver this year – could keep Allmendinger from leading a race-high 46 of 109 laps. The win was the third of Allmendinger’s career, his first in more than two years, and his second for Kaulig Racing.

Byron emerged from a pack of contenders to give chase in the closing laps, but Allmendinger held his nerve and beat Byron’s Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to the finish line by .666 seconds.

Kyle Busch, who had to win to advance into the NASCAR Playoffs’ Round of 8, was eliminated after finishing third. Ty Gibbs and Joey Logano completed the top five with polesitter Tyler Reddick sixth, followed by Chris Buescher, Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott and Ross Chastain.

Busch, Chastain, Bubba Wallace and Brad Keselowski were eliminated from the Playoffs. Byron, Buescher and Reddick will join Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson and Ryan Blaney in the Round of 8.

Reddick led every lap of Stage 1, while Elliott claimed Stage 2.

Shortly after Hamlin clinched a Round of 8 berth thanks to accumulated stage points, he crashed out and ultimately finished 37th.

A.J. ALLMENDINGER, NO. 16 KAULIG RACING CHEVROLET (Race Winner): “I knew that if I could get into the lead, it was going to be a difficult challenge for those guys to get around me. … I try to study, not just the race track, but where everybody is in the Playoffs and where they are. Everybody’s going for a Cup win, but there’s aggression and there’s desperation. Going back and forth (for the lead with Gibbs) was fun, but I know what he’s going for: his first Cup win. It’s hard to do this. I knew Kyle (Busch) had to win to stay in the Playoffs and I knew William was advancing, so he was going to be aggressive, but not that aggressive.

“At the end of the day, for me, it’s about if I make no mistakes and William beats me, I’ll go home, look in the mirror and say, ‘Hey, the better team, better driver beat me.’ I didn’t want to make a mistake that cost me. Those moments are the ones I dream of: it’s the best of the best, it’s on you, and it’s up to you not to let them by. Those last seven or eight laps, that’s as perfect as I can drive a race car. After that, you can walk around, beat your chest a bit and say, ‘When it’s time, I can be as perfect as possible.’”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS CHEVROLET (Runner-Up): “It was up and down for us – obviously up at the end. That’s how you want it. I was under the weather before the race, but honestly, once I got in the race car, I was pretty much fine. Really close to a win, but not quite.”

KYLE BUSCH, NO. 8 RICHARD CHILDRESS RACING CHEVROLET (Third-Place Finisher): “The 54 (Ty Gibbs) cut me some breaks over the last three or four laps. I was getting sloppy, the car was coming out of the race track and getting real challenging to drive. We held on for third, so that’s about what we expected out of here with our road course program. It’s strong. … It’s going to be bittersweet when we win in Las Vegas next week, because, boom, that locks you through. That’ll give you all the what-ifs, but it’ll certainly be a good building block for our program.”
