    Rick Ware Racing and Spire Motorsports Announce Driver Trade

    RWR Acquires Corey LaJoie From Spire, Spire Procures Justin Haley From RWR

    BRISTOL, Tenn. (Sept. 20, 2024) – With eight races left on the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series calendar, two teams are making changes for the remainder of the season.

    Rick Ware Racing (RWR) has acquired driver Corey LaJoie from Spire Motorsports, and Spire Motorsports has procured driver Justin Haley from RWR. Saturday’s Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway will be the last race for each driver with their current organizations. Beginning with next weekend’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, LaJoie will take over the No. 51 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for RWR, and Haley will drive the No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Spire Motorsports.

    While LaJoie’s pending partnership with RWR will mark his first stint with the team, Haley’s upcoming drive with Spire Motorsports serves as a homecoming. Haley began his NASCAR Cup Series career with Spire Motorsports, winning the 2019 Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in just his third career NASCAR Cup Series start.

    “Justin Haley is a very talented driver who has done a lot to help elevate RWR,” said Robby Benton, president, RWR. “Justin came to us over the Olympic break with a longer-term opportunity that would serve his career well. We were sympathetic to his desires, as Justin committed to RWR early last year and has since played a key role in the growth of our organization. We didn’t want to compromise his growth or our own. In our talks with Justin following the break, we agreed to release him from his contract with RWR.

    “Obviously, we needed a new plan to maintain the momentum we’ve gained this year, and Corey LaJoie joining RWR allows us to keep moving forward. These seven races provide a unique and unconventional opportunity to work together now and evaluate what we may be able to accomplish together going forward. Corey wants to continue his path toward winning in the NASCAR Cup Series, and so do we. We’re like-minded in that pursuit.”

    LaJoie comes to RWR after spending the last four seasons (2021-2024) at Spire Motorsports.

    “Corey LaJoie has been a cornerstone of Spire Motorsports and we’re incredibly appreciative of all the time, effort and energy he has invested in our program. RWR is getting a workhorse in Corey. He’s dedicated to his craft and his tenacity brings out the best in those around him,” said Jeff Dickerson, co-owner, Spire Motorsports.

    “We’ve known Justin Haley for many years and have been bullish on his talent from the beginning of his NASCAR career. Justin, and his win at Daytona, put us both on the map. It was a pivotal moment for his career and our organization. We’ve both grown since that day, as Justin has proven his talent in the Cup garage and he comes back to an organization that is very different from the one he left a few years ago. Getting back together now, rather than waiting until 2025, gives us an excellent opportunity to build a baseline and be a step ahead when we get to Daytona next February.”

    LaJoie is a 32-year-old, third-generation racer who grew up near stock-car racing’s epicenter of Charlotte, North Carolina. Haley is a 25-year-old racer from Winamac, Indiana, who began his career on dirt tracks before transitioning to pavement racing. Both drivers have worked their way up the NASCAR ladder to the elite NASCAR Cup Series, competing in the ARCA Menards Series, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Saturday night’s race at Bristol will mark LaJoie’s 265th career NASCAR Cup Series start and it will be Haley’s 137th career NASCAR Cup Series start.

    Harrison Burton Joins AM Racing Xfinity Series Program Beginning in 2025

    STATESVILLE, N.C.: AM Racing proudly announced today that recent Daytona Cup Series winner Harrison Burton will join the organization to pilot the team’s flagship Ford Mustang entry full-time in the Xfinity Series beginning with the season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on February 15, 2025.

    Burton will join the Statesville, N.C. team following a three-year stint in the Cup Series, driving the famed No. 21 Ford Mustang for the iconic Wood Brothers Racing team.

    The son of former Cup Series driver and current NBC television analyst Jeff Burton, missiled his way into the 2024 Cup Series Playoffs with a dramatic last-lap pass in the penultimate Cup Series race of the regular season at Daytona International Speedway to deliver the Stuart, Virginia team its 100th victory in the Cup Series and Burton’s first-career win at the sports pinnacle level.

    The Huntersville, N.C.-native will join AM Racing for its third year of full-time competition in the Xfinity Series. After several years as a mainstay in the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, the family-owned team graduated to the Xfinity Series in 2023.

    “I’m excited to join AM Racing and help build it into the race-winning race team I believe it can and will be,” said Burton. “I think this will be a great opportunity for me to take the things I’ve learned in the Cup Series, bring those to the Xfinity Series and be the best driver I can be.

    “It’s a blessing to continue my NASCAR journey, and I intend to make the most of this opportunity.”

    AM Racing has also renewed its agreement with Roush Yates Engines to continue to provide the legendary Ford horsepower for the 33-race schedule next season.

    The team will continue its technical alliance with the soon-to-be-rebranded HAAS Factory Team for a third consecutive Xfinity Series season.

    Lane Riggs earns second Truck Series victory by racing to UNOH 200 title at Bristol Motor Speedway

     BRISTOL, Tenn.—Layne Riggs relished his role as spoiler so much that he returned for an encore Thursday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.

    Riggs isn’t competing for the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series championship, but that didn’t prevent him from winning the Playoff opener Aug. 25 at the Milwaukee Mile.

    On Thursday, Riggs passed runner-up Corey Heim for the lead on Lap 121 of 200 in the UNOH 200 Presented by Ohio Logistics and held it the rest of the way to score his second career victory and his fourth straight top five.

    “Oh, my gosh, we’ve just learned so much with the trucks,” said the driver of the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford. “My team, Dylan (Cappello), he’s bad-ass…

    “To be running fifth, 10th and all of a sudden to go back-to-back in the Playoffs—man, I wish I was in the Playoffs so bad. I think we’d be a real threat to win the championship.”

    Heim had to settle for second place, but there was a silver lining for the driver of the No. 11 TRICON Garage Toyota. Heim scored enough points on Thursday to advance to Round of 8, as did fourth-place finisher Christian Eckes and fifth-place Nick Sanchez.

    “Every time we got a heat cycle on the tires, it seemed like we got tighter and tighter,” said Heim, who fell one spot short in his defense of last year’s victory at Thunder Valley. “Just didn’t quite have it, but solid points day in the Playoffs—that’s what you need, so I will keep moving forward…

    “I’m looking forward to my favorite place (Kansas Speedway) next week.”

    Heim won a drag race for the runner-up spot over Rajah Caruth, who elevated his standing in the Playoffs with a win in the first stage and a solid run the rest of the way.

    Caruth vaulted from 10th to fifth in the standings with the third-place run and now stands 35 points above the current cut line with next Friday’s elimination race at Kansas left to determine which eight drivers advance to the next round.

    “We executed the race—just two spots short,” said Caruth, who glanced toward Riggs’ truck doing celebratory burnouts on the frontstretch. “Man, I wish that was us,” Caruth added wistfully.

    Reigning series champion Ben Rhodes fought an ill-handling truck and finished 27th, two laps down, and fell to 10th in the standings, 12 points behind Grant Enfinger in eighth.

    Daniel Dye tangled with Kaden Honeycutt on the frontstretch on Lap 157 and finished 37th, six laps down. Dye heads for Kansas seven points behind Enfinger.

    Eighteen-year-old Sprint Car star Corey Day finished 18th in his Truck Series debut. After winning his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut last Saturday at Watkins Glen, polesitter Connor Zilisch spun in Turn 4 on Lap 109 and came home 19th.

    Matt Crafton ran sixth, followed by Chase Purdy and Playoff driver Ty Majeski, who started from the rear after his team made unapproved adjustments to the No. 98 Ford. Stewart Friesen and Playoff driver Tyler Ankrum completed the top 10.

    William Sawalich raced to the win in the Bush’s Beans 200 ARCA Menards Series race and in the process claimed his second ARCA Menards East Series title. It was Sawalich’s second straight Bristol Motor Speedway victory.

    Sawalich powered past his challengers at the controls of his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing machine to take the checkered flag in front of Landen Lewis, Lavar Scott, Andres Perez and Dean Thompson.

    Connor Zilisch, who entered the race as the ARCA East points leader got caught up in a crash early in the race and it ended his championship chances. His No. 28 machine collided with Logan Misuraca’s No. 9 Chevy, which spun out and hit the wall. As her car drifted back down track, Zilich’s machine slammed into it at full speed. The damage to Zilisch’s car was too much to overcome. Zilisch finished 26th and dropped to second in the East standings.

    Other notable finishers included heralded dirt track racer Corey Day, who finished seventh and former Indy Car racer Marco Andretti, who finished 22nd.

    Toyota Driver William Sawalich Repeats as ARCA Menards Series East Champion

    BRISTOL, Tenn. (September 19, 2024) – Camry driver William Sawalich won his second-consecutive ARCA Menards Series East championship with a win at Bristol Motor Speedway Thursday evening. Sawalich’s back-to-back title is the fourth consecutive ARCA Menards Series East title for a Toyota driver.

    Coming off an impressive season last year that ended in a championship, Sawalich upped the ante in 2024, with incredibly consistent performances across all ARCA Menards Series racing. In ARCA East races, the Minnesotan captured three victories and seven top-fives in eight starts this season. He was also dominant on the national ARCA tour, winning eight races, including four in a row (Salem, Elko, Springfield and Milwaukee), and only finishing outside the top-five once.

    “Winning consecutive championships is a tremendous accomplishment no matter what form of motorsports it is in, and we are thrilled for William, his family and our great partners at Joe Gibbs Racing,” said Paul Doleshal, Group Manager, Motorsports, Toyota Motor North America (TMNA). “William’s talent cannot be overstated, and we’re fortunate to have him within our development program.     Alongside his ARCA success, Sawalich is also improving his race craft by making appearances in NASCAR’s Truck and Xfinity Series. The 17-year-old has already made 11 career starts in the Truck Series with TRICON Garage with a career-best finish of sixth at the Indianapolis Raceway Park in 2023. Sawalich will also compete in the Truck Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway this evening, and he’ll make his Xfinity Series debut later this season at Homestead-Miami Speedway after turning 18.

    Sawalich drives the No. 18 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) in ARCA competition. This is the third ARCA Menards Series East title for the team, going along with Sammy Smith’s championship in 2021. Sawalich is the seventh Toyota driver to win the ARCA East title and the third to win the championship in consecutive years. He joins a list that includes Ryan Truex (2009 and 2010), Max Gresham (2011), Kyle Larson (2012), Harrison Burton (2017), Tyler Ankrum (2018) and Smith (2021 and 2022).

    Palou Claims Third Title; Herta Gets First Oval Win at Nashville

    LEBANON, Tenn. (Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024) – Alex Palou joined the immortals of more than a century of North American open-wheel racing Sunday, winning his third NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship at the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix Presented by Gainbridge at Nashville Superspeedway.

    Palou finished 11th in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, more than enough to clinch his third Astor Challenge Cup in the last four years. His closest title rival, Will Power, went five laps down early in the race due to a disconnected seat belt in the No. 12 Verizon Business Team Penske Chevrolet and finished 24th, eight laps down.

    “We just had to keep on going,” Palou said of his focus after he learned of Power’s troubles. “I have to thank everyone working on the 10 car. Super proud. It’s been an amazing year, and I’m happy we got the championship back home.”

    With the title race all but over just 13 laps into the 206-lap race due to Power’s troubles, Colton Herta hunted down and passed Pato O’Ward on Lap 202 to earn his first career oval victory in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda of Andretti Global with Curb-Agajanian. Nashville-area resident Herta outraced O’Ward’s No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet to victory by 1.8106 seconds and climbed from fourth to a career-best second in the final NTT INDYCAR SERIES standings, 31 points behind champion Palou.

    It was the first oval victory for the Andretti team since Alexander Rossi won in 2018 at Pocono Raceway.

    “I’m so happy,” Herta said. “We knew we were going to have a hot rod in the race. It’s been an amazing year. I just saw I finished second in the championship, which is awesome. Hoping to do a little bit better next year.”

    Nashville-area resident Josef Newgarden finished third in the No. 2 Hitachi Astemo Team Penske Chevrolet. NTT P1 Award winner Kyle Kirkwood was fourth in the No. 27 AutoNation Honda of Andretti Global after leading a race-high 67 laps, while Scott McLaughlin rounded out the top five in the No. 3 DEX Imaging Team Penske Chevrolet.

    Palou’s list of accolades matches many of the all-time greats of INDYCAR SERIES racing. He became just the 13th driver in history to earn at least three championships and just the seventh to win three titles in four years; Dario Franchitti was the last – also for Chip Ganassi Racing – when he won three straight from 2009-11.

    Spaniard Palou, 27 years, 5 months, 14 days, became the second-youngest driver to win three INDYCAR SERIES championships. Only Sam Hornish Jr. was younger, 27 years, 2 months, 8 days in 2006.

    Chip Ganassi Racing also continued its climb into rare air, winning its 16th series championship, including four in the last five seasons. Only Team Penske has more, with 17 titles.

    Herta prevailed over O’Ward in a duel of differing strategies created by use of Firestone Firehawk alternate tires in addition to the standard primary tires. It was only the second time the softer, grippier red-sidewall alternates have been used on an oval in series history.

    O’Ward made his final pit stop at the end of Lap 161, taking the Firestone alternate tires for the mandatory second time. David Malukas was forced to pit from the lead on Lap 201 in the No. 66 AutoNation/Arctic Wolf Honda of Meyer Shank Racing, as he made his previous stop on Lap 139 and didn’t have enough fuel to make it to the finish.

    Meanwhile, Herta was hunting down O’Ward after he made his final stop at the end of Lap 180, 19 laps after O’Ward’s final trip to pit lane. Herta took more durable Firestone primary tires after using his two mandatory alternate sets earlier in the race and used that fresher rubber to claw ground on O’Ward, also helped by slower traffic blunting O’Ward.

    As Malukas was in pit lane for his final stop, Herta dove under the lapped No. 41 Goodheart Vet/Pray.com Chevrolet of A.J. Foyt Enterprises in Turn 1 at the start of Lap 202, with O’Ward on the outside in a nerve-fraying race for the win. O’Ward was forced slightly up the 1.33-mile concrete oval by the three-wide action, and that let Herta power past for the lead for good at the end of the back straightaway and into Turn 3.

    Herta never trailed thereafter for his second victory of the season – he also won on the streets of Toronto in July – and his ninth career victory. The decisive pass was one of 653 on track and 237 for position, records for the INDYCAR SERIES at this track in its return here for the first time since 2008.

    Meanwhile, Palou wasted no time from the drop of the green flag to erase the predicament he found himself in after qualifying Saturday. He only needed to finish ninth or better to clinch the title, but he started 24th in the 27-car field after qualifying a mystifying 15th and dropping nine spots on the starting grid due to a penalty for an unauthorized engine change after the race Sept. 1 at Milwaukee.

    Palou already had gained 10 spots, running 14th, when calamity struck Power on Lap 13. Power had started fourth – he needed to place third or better to have any mathematical chance of winning his third title – but had slipped to sixth when he called to his pit box on his radio that his lap belt dislodged.

    Power immediately pitted, and the field circled the track five times before the belt was fixed and Power was back on track. His title hopes were over.

    “I was driving down the front stretch there, and I just felt a pop on the lap belt,” Power said. “That’s a very abnormal thing. I don’t know what went wrong. Very strange failure. I’ve never had that before. You have engine failures, gearbox failures; I had a belt failure.

    “Disappointing, but big congrats to Alex. A tough guy to beat. Ganassi did a great job. It’s been fun racing those guys this year.”

    The 2025 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season starts Sunday, March 2 with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding at St. Petersburg, Florida, live on FOX and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

    Foster Finishes Title Year at Nashville with Eighth Victory

    LEBANON, Tenn. (Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024) – Louis Foster was just too fast – today and all season.

    Foster finished his INDY NXT by Firestone championship-winning season with his eighth victory of 2024 in the Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway. Foster drove his No. 26 Copart/Novara Technologies entry of Andretti Global to victory by .3071 of a second over rookie Yuven Sundaramoorthy in the No. 22 Optima Batteries/Clarios/Abel Motorsports car. It was a career-best finish for Sundaramoorthy.

    While Foster clinched the title in the INDYCAR development series at the previous race, Aug. 31 at Milwaukee, he finally got a chance to perform celebratory donuts after his 10th career victory in INDY NXT, tying him for second all time with Tommy Byrne, Alex Lloyd, Paul Tracy and current NTT INDYCAR SERIES star Kyle Kirkwood. Greg Moore is the all-time leader with 13 wins.

    “I would have loved to have done them at Milwaukee, but we had to baby the car for one more weekend,” Foster said of the celebration. “But now we can. Yeah, it’s good. If in doubt, go flat out.”

    Rookie Caio Collet finished third in the No. 18 HMD Motorsports entry, 1.7897 seconds behind Foster on the 1.33-mile concrete oval. James Roe finished fourth in the No. 29 Topcon car of Andretti Global, and rookie Salvador de Alba Jr. rounded out the top five in the No. 2 Grupo Indi machine of Andretti Cape NXT and helped to put three Andretti-affiliated cars in the top five as the team capped its sixth championship in INDY NXT.

    Foster earned his eighth win in the last 11 races as his list of superlatives continued to mushroom. He never finished lower than second in the last 11 races of this season, dating back to mid-May. He qualified on the front row in the last 10 races of the season.

    In total, Foster led the series in wins (eight), poles (seven), laps led (362 of 640, 57 percent), top-five finishes (13) and top-10 finishes (14) in 14 races this season.

    Foster pulled away from the field today after starting from pole. His gap held steady between two and three seconds, first over Collet. Then Sundaramoorthy passed Collet in Turn 1 on Lap 34 of the 65-lap race but couldn’t bridge the gap to Foster.

    But the complexion of the race changed on Lap 52 when Jack William Miller in the No. 40 Patterson Dental Haven Go by SAAM car of Miller Vinatieri Motorsports and Jamie Chadwick in the No. 28 VEXT entry of Andretti Global made contact in Turn 1, triggering the only caution of the race.

    Foster’s three-second lead suddenly evaporated. He got a good jump on the restart on Lap 58, but Sundaramoorthy rallied to pull to within two-tenths of a second on Lap 59. Sundaramoorthy closed to within one-tenth of a second on Lap 63, but Foster drove away on the last two laps to hang on for victory. Foster led every lap.

    “It was a strange race, really,” Foster said. “We were pinned for pretty much the entire race. Once I had a bit of a gap to Caio and Yuven behind, I was saving tires a bit.

    “But Yuven was really strong that race. I had to keep him behind at the end, and I was struggling with the balance of the car. I wasn’t sure if we had it. But luckily, I was able to keep him at bay and finish with a win.”

    Winning the 2024 Manufacturer Championship marks the ninth time Chevrolet has captured the coveted award since its return to INDYCAR competition in 2012.

    “This is a proud moment for everyone at Chevrolet. The effort by GM Motorsports competition engineering and Propulsion engineers, along with our partners at Ilmor, to deliver power and reliability in the Chevy 2.2 liter V6 INDYCAR engine has been outstanding,” said Mark Reuss, GM President.

    All of Chevrolet’s full-time teams contributed valuable time and effort toward the ninth NICS Manufacturer Championship.     HAMPTON, Ga. (Sept. 8, 2024) – Joey Logano held off all comers to open the 2024 NASCAR Playoffs with a dramatic overtime victory in the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

    The driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford charged to the lead on the final restart to hold off the No. 99 Trackhouse Racing Quaker State Chevrolet of Daniel Suarez, with Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, and Alex Bowman rounding out the top-five finishers. The field completed Lap 266 of the scheduled 260-lap event as the eighth yellow caution flag of the day waved above them due to a multi-car pileup behind the leaders in Turn 4. The field was frozen at that point but Logano was far enough ahead that it didn’t affect the outcome.

    It was the second NASCAR Cup Series win for Logano at the track where he lived in the Turn 4 condominiums for eight years as a child while racing US Legends Cars. His first victory was in the March 2023 Ambetter Health 400.

    The final restart was set up as the field was coming to take the initial white flag when Harrison Burton got into Noah Gragson who then tagged the inside wall in Turn 3. That set up the green/white/checkered scenario, with Logano lined up on the bottom, Suarez next to him, Team Penske’s Blaney behind his teammate with Trackhouse Racing’s Chastain behind his teammate.

    Logano jumped out to a quick lead and held off Suarez for the victory, confirming his advancement into the Round of 12.

    “They just give me really fast cars on superspeedways, and we always find ourselves towards the front of them, (but) we just end up wrecking more times than not,” said Logano, who led twice for nine laps, a far cry from teammate Austin Cindric’s race-high 92.

    “So, to be able to finally capitalize on a fast race car and win here in Atlanta again, I lived right over there in condo 805 for a long time (as a child racing Legend Cars), waking up dreaming of just racing on this racetrack.

    “So, pulling into Victory Lane here is always a special one. We had such a really good team here today. It’s awesome to get (sponsor) Autotrader into Victory Lane, and the JL Kids Crew (one of Logano’s charitable enterprises) are here today, so it’s really cool to finally win with them here.”

    There were four cautions in the race’s final 55 laps, which created 11 lead changes among six drivers. In addition to Logano, Bubba Wallace led once while Busch, Bryon, Ty Gibbs and Suarez each led twice. Austin Cindric led twice and notched the most laps at the point with 91.

    “I am happy with (finishing second), but not satisfied,” said Suarez. “I lost my pusher, my teammate. He was doing a great job, and I felt like we were going to have a great shot at it. Ross was doing an amazing job of pushing, and I don’t know if he got a flat tire or something, but once I lost him, I knew it was going to be tough. But, that is part of racing, right?

    Caution with 12 laps to go set up the five-lap sprint for the checkers

    The balance of the Top-10 finishers were Tyler Reddick, Kyle Busch, Elliott Sadler, William Byron and Austin Cindric.

    Playoff drivers who experienced a forgettable day and finish were Brad Keselowski (19th), Denny Hamlin (24th), Martin Truex Jr. (35th), Kyle Larson (37th) and Chase Briscoe (38th). All but Keselowski were involved in wrecks. Pole winner Michael McDowell finished 22nd.

    HAMPTON, Ga. (Sept. 7, 2024) – A multi-car crash among race leaders with less than 20 laps remaining set up the trophy dash finish that allowed Georgia native Austin Hill to take the checkered flag in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Focused Health 250 and sweep the 2024 NXS season at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

    Hill restarted third in his No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet with just 13 laps remaining, took the lead one lap later and fought off hard charges from multiple drivers to cross the finish line 0.340-of-a-second ahead of Parker Kligerman’s No. 48 Big Machine Chevrolet. He lead only the final 12 laps.

    The Winston, Ga., native swept Atlanta Motor Speedway’s NASCAR Xfinity Series races this season and has won four of the six series races since the speedway was reconfigured for the 2022 season.

    “I was doing everything in my power to win the race,” said Hill. “I saw the 48 didn’t have much momentum. I figured that nobody was going to get a run to get back to us. This is such a special win. We had to work for that one. The car didn’t drive the best all day but we were there when it mattered.”

    AJ Allmendinger (No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet), Talking Rock, Ga.’s Chandler Smith (No. 81 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota) and Marietta, Ga.’s Corey Heim (No. 26 Sam Hunt Racing Toyota) rounded out the top-five finishers. The balance of the top 10 were pole-winner Jesse Love (No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet), Sammy Smith (No. 8 JR Motorsports Chevrolet), Josh Williams (No. 11 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet), Atlanta’s Brandon Jones (No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet), and Ryan Truex (No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota).

    The late-race restart was created after contact on Lap 144 between Cole Custer, Justin Allgaier and Taylor Gray, running second through fourth, created a multi-car incident that brought out the red flag. Ryan Sieg, Riley Herbst and others were also gathered up in the late-race melee.

    Allgaier, the series points leader entering the Focused Health 250, was unable to complete the race and finished 30th while Custer, second in points, suffered the same fate and finished 31st.

    Stage 1
    Love led the field of 37 to the green flag while RCR teammate and eventual race winner Hill quickly moved up two spots to Love’s back bumper. After a caution on Lap 12, racing resumed four laps later with the RCR drivers chased by Allgaier, Chandler Smith, and Taylor Gray.

    Allgaier dove low to make a bid for the lead on Lap 23 and accomplished the feat two laps later. He would maintain that lead for the balance of the 40-lap first stage. The rest of the top 10 were Hill, Riley Herbst, Sheldon Creed, Love, Sam Mayer, Jones, Cole Custer, Smith and Gray.

    Stage 2
    Tire strategies during pit stops under caution after Stage 1 found Allmendinger leading the field to begin Stage 2 on Lap 48 with Sammy Smith, Allgaier, and Herbst in his immediate tow.

    The field settled down as the laps clicked off with Allmendinger, Smith, Custer, Herbst and Love making up top five. Early leaders Allgaier and Hill dealt with handling issues for the majority of the stage.

    The caution flag waved on Lap 77 when Mayer’s day ended early, and spectacularly, after contact with another driver and then the wall caused a large fireball to burst from the rear of his No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet. He would finish 37th.

    Stage 2 finished under caution on Lap 80 with Allmendinger grabbing the coveted playoff point, his first of the season. The rest of the top 10 were Sammy Smith, Custer, Herbst, Allgaier, Love, Gray, Chandler Smith, Shane Van Gisbergen, and Hill.

    Other notable finishers included: Sheldon Creed, fifth in NXS points entering the weekend, finished 25th, three laps down … NXS rookie Taylor Gray, who qualified second for the Focused Health 250 and finished in the top 10 in the first two stages, was collected in the Lap 144 incident and finished 28th … Tucker, Georgia native Ryan Sieg (No. 39 RSS Racing Ford) finished 32nd after getting gathered up in the late-race melee.

    NASCAR Hall of Famer gave life to phrase in BMS victory lane after winning the 2004 Night Race

    BRISTOL, Tenn. (Aug. 30, 2024) – It’s hard to believe that more than two decades ago three simple words were said in Bristol Motor Speedway’s Victory Lane that would catch fire and ignite a proud mantra.

    It’s. Bristol. Baby.

    The buzz from that statement continues to connect with NASCAR Nation. Many of them flock to BMS’s North Lot at Entrance No. 1 and take social media selfies with the large historic monument dedicated to that singular moment that proudly welcomes visitors to the venue.

    It was a wild scene in that victory lane.

    As Dale Earnhardt Jr. emerged from his red No. 8 Chevy one hot night in August 2004 he was asked by television reporter Bill Weber why winning the crown jewel Night Race was so special. The third-generation driver didn’t hesitate. He quickly uttered the memorable phrase like it was on a script.

    “It’s Bristol, baby!” a jubilant Earnhardt said.

    Since then that phrase has taken on a life of its own. Today it remains as meaningful and powerful as it was that night. It has become synonymous with Bristol Motor Speedway and the amazing experience it offers to fans.

    “I’m just really, really, really, glad that I won tonight, because this is like the Daytona 500,” Earnhardt Jr. said at the time. “This is like winning at Charlotte, or like winning in Atlanta. These are the tracks, the historic tracks that have been around for years that are at the top of my list (of places) I want to win.”

    As BMS celebrates the 20th anniversary of that momentous occasion, the legend himself is returning to suit up and compete on the storied high banks once again.

    Earnhardt Jr. is entered in the Food City 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series Race on Friday night, Sept. 20. It is the second consecutive year that he will race in that event, which is also the Xfinity Series regular season finale.

    Last year Earnhardt Jr. had fans on the edges of their seats as he was in contention for most of the night. He led 47 laps and appeared to be heading to Victory Lane. A faulty wire ultimately ended his night and he finished 30th overall.

    “Somehow the shift control caught on fire,” Earnhardt Jr. told the media following the race. “Saw some smoke in the car. I smelt it, and I said, ‘I hope that’s not me,’ but that last lap, I saw a big fire ball down in the tunnel, in the car. I felt it, obviously. My uniform was burning up. I was like, I can’t keep going. I’ve got to stop. Usually when you stop, the fires get bigger. So I pulled over by the pit stall, and some of those guys are pretty alert, and they helped me out.

    “I hate it. We were going to finish in the top 10, maybe top-five. Had a shot at winning it, if the car was going to run good at the end. But trying not to mess nobody’s night up at the same time, it was hard. But I had fun.”

    After the dejected Earnhardt pulled off his racing helmet last year, he was able to immediately put on his team owner hat from JR Motorsports and with a big smile go celebrate in Bristol’s victory lane anyway. One of his team drivers, Justin Allgaier, ultimately won the race in the No. 7 JRM Chevy.

    “I was happy about our car winning,” Earnhardt continued during his post-race interview in the BMS Media Center. “I couldn’t wait to see Justin. Couldn’t wait to tell him how proud and happy I was.”

    Earnhardt Jr. will once again be at the controls of his popular blue and yellow No. 88 Hellmann’s Mayonnaise Chevy Camaro as he puts his focus on grabbing another Bristol Motor Speedway victory.

    A full-feature story about Earnhardt Jr.’s Food City 300 race and the 20th anniversary of “It’s Bristol, baby!” written by veteran NASCAR journalist Mike Hembree will be included in the souvenir program for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race. The program, in Playbill format, will be available to fans in both print and digital versions. The limited print edition will only be available at the track in multiple locations throughout the stadium concourses, including entry gates, ticket stands and guest service locations.     America’s Night Race weekend kicks off Thursday, Sept. 19 with Ben Rhodes and defending winner Corey Heim battling for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory in the UNOH 200 presented by Ohio Logistics (8 p.m., FS1, MRN Radio). The rising stars in the ARCA Menards Series, including rising stars William Sawalich and Connor Zilisch and former IndyCar racer Marco Andretti, also will take on the challenging half-mile bullring in the Bush’s Beans 200 as part of a titan Thursday night doubleheader (5 p.m., FS1, MRN Radio).

    On Friday, Sparks are sure to fly in the Food City 300, as NASCAR Xfinity Series favorites Justin Allgaier, Austin Hill, Cole Custer, Sheldon Creed and Riley Herbst will be fighting hard alongside Earnhardt Jr. in the Xfinity Series regular season finale (Sept. 20, 7:30 p.m., The CW, PRN Radio).

    Finally, the stars of the NASCAR Cup Series will take to the track on Saturday for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race (Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m., USA Network, PRN Radio), you’ll get to see all of your favorite drivers like Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin to name a few, racing hard in the Round of 16 to advance in the first elimination race of the Playoffs.
