Mike Wallace and No. 01 Global Charter Corp Chevy earn top-20 finish in California

GAFFNEY, S.C. (March 25, 2012) – Mike Wallace headed into the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Auto Club Speedway without a sponsor, but with high hopes for a good finish.

The JD Motorsports team left with both after 150 laps of competition at the two-mile oval on Saturday afternoon.

After the single practice session on Friday, Wallace and the Newt Moore-led team were 21st on the practice chart. Their four-time NNS race winner in Wallace backed that up by qualifying 19th before Saturday’s race.

Once the green flag dropped under overcast skies, Wallace maintained a top-20 run as the field worked their way around the huge oval. For the early portion, Wallace worked on the fastest way around the track while the crew waited for caution pit stops to make adjustments.

They’d be waiting a lot because there were only four cautions for 18 laps throughout the race. When the first yellow flag flew on lap 35, Wallace was running 22nd when he hit pit road for tires, fuel and adjustments.

Another one on lap 55 brought more cars to pit road for fuel as they only had 20 laps on their tires. Restarting on lap 63, Wallace was in 22nd place and up to 21st on lap 70, one lap down to the leaders.

Two more cautions in the second half of the race allowed for tires, fuel and adjustments. The one where the JD Motorsports team was really allowed to make a great move was the caution on lap 134.

Electing to take the “wave around” put them back on the lead lap when the restart took place on lap 138. Wallace was lined up in 18th position when the green waved looking to gain more positions with 12 laps remaining.

With three and four-wide racing taking place ahead of him, the No. 01 Global Partner Corp Chevrolet maintained their own pace and came across the stripe in 18th to earn another top-20 finish.

This keeps Wallace 15th in the Driver’s Points, but now trailing 12th by only two markers. The NNS will take a two-week break and return to action on Friday, May 13 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Mike Wallace Quotes: “That was a typical NNS race here in California. This big track takes everything out of the motor and getting the set up just right. We were able to get in some good practice laps and then back that up in qualifying.

“During the race, things were pretty uneventful for this JD Motorsports team. We made the right calls on pit road and were able to take advantage of the wave around there at the end to put us back on the lead lap.

“From there, we just held on for a top-20 finish and brought the No. 01 Global Barter Corp Chevrolet in one piece. I’d like to thank them for coming on board to help us out for this race and hope they had fun.

“Since we’re off for two weeks, I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Easter and hope they enjoy the time with family and friends.”

TOYOTA NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Post-Race Notes & Quotes Auto Club Speedway — March 24, 2012

Joey Logano earned his 10th NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) victory in Saturday’s race at Auto Club Speedway of Southern California. Logano started on the pole and led eight times for 92 laps (of 150) at the two-mile race track. Joe Gibbs Racing drivers have now won eight consecutive NNS races at California dating back to Feb. 2008. Toyota drivers have also led 818 of 1,204 laps in those eight races. Brian Scott (fourth), Kenny Wallace (seventh) and Kyle Busch (eighth) also earned top-10 finishes for Toyota. Ontario-native Jason Bowles finished 15th in his first full season of NNS competition. Other Camry drivers in the field included Tayler Malsam (16th), Mike Bliss (17th), Joe Nemechek (19th), Eric McClure (26th), John Jackson (42nd) and Jeff Green (43rd).

JOEY LOGANO, No. 18 Translux Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 1st What was the key to today’s win? “Adam Stevens (crew chief). He gave me a great car man. That’s awesome. That was the class of the field all day. They had plenty of shots at me. The restarts were hairy. I was good for a few laps then I would fall off and then my car would come back. And then it was awesome. A lot of fun to run this Translux for one race here and get them a win. It’s good to finally be back in victory lane man. It means a lot to win these things.”

How does it feel to win here again? “It was awesome to in here again. It’s been a little bit since I got my last victory and I felt like we gave away a couple recently – Nationwide races. Daytona — I felt like we won that one. Last week had a car that was capable of winning. Today, we finally capitalize on a car that was capable of winning. Man, it feels good to get back here to victory lane in Fontana. Translux — thanks for them coming on for one race here and getting them a big ‘W’ — so that was exciting. Man, it’s just good to be back in victory lane. I forgot how much fun it was to do burnouts. It’s a lot of fun.”

How much work was done on the car during the race? “We didn’t change much. We didn’t change much from when we unloaded. We knew what we had to work on. We stayed focused in practice on what we needed to do to fix it. Our practice is the most important part of the whole weekend in my eyes. We got our car just right and we got something for them tomorrow. And, man we had it.”

How will this help with Sunday’s NSCS race? “Jason Ratcliff (NSCS crew chief) texted me last night and said, ‘Let’s go to dinner tomorrow night after you win that Nationwide race tomorrow.’ I said, ‘That’s right — we are.’ I did my part. Now I can go to dinner with him.”

How were you able to go from third to first on the final restart? “I thought all the restarts were crazy. That was the most tame restart I’ve had the whole race, really. I knew the 2 (Elliott Sadler) in front of me had no tires and we had tires. I had to get by him really quick. When we were going into turn one I was blocking the bottom trying to get underneath him and I thought about going down the center of a couple cars there. I went in the corner behind him and hoped he washed up and he washed up just enough for me to get my nose underneath him and we were able to clear him. Once we cleared him I had to get enough room to draft — these Nationwide cars don’t have a whole ton of horsepower, so if you’re four or five car lengths in front of a guy, they’ll draft you right back down on the straightaway. Once you get six or seven car lengths, you can feel a little bit more comfortable. I had a car that was good enough to take off on that last restart. We weren’t really good on restarts the whole race. Adam (Stevens, crew chief) and the boys made a couple good adjustments on the last restart to help us take off better.”

JOE GIBBS, Owner, No. 18 Translux Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing What does it mean for Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas to have now won eight consecutive races at Auto Club Speedway? “It means a lot — I don’t know how that happened. These things are so hard to win. I honestly, as everybody knows if you have followed what has happened to us in Nationwide, we spent years and years trying to win a race. It’s a credit to all the guys. Adam (Stevens, crew chief) would probably tell you the same thing and Joey (Logano). We have a hard-working bunch of guys that we have put together in Nationwide and we also do a lot of it in our Cup operation. We have a lot of — we work back and forth with each other. I think it’s really a credit to the Nationwide shop. I really appreciate those guys. The motors, Mark Cronquist (JGR engine builder) and everybody has done a great job. We really appreciate Joey driving it the way he did today and Adam all the calls that were made and all the calls on pit road. We love coming to Southern California, it’s a great place. We spent 30 years here running all over the place and it’s fun for me to come back and be here. We really appreciate our fan base here also.”

ADAM STEVENS, Crew Chief, No. 18 Translux Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing How was your view of the race from the pit box? “It was a very even race today. Just the grip level of this race track and the multiple grooves and how wide it is, and the parity of the field, I don’t know who wouldn’t like watching that race — it was amazing. So many lead changes and it really put it in the driver’s hands where you could move around and change a lap time. That’s what I saw out of the top-five all day long, which driver was getting the most out of their car. Joey (Logano) obviously, he’s the master of that. He can do that here, he can do that lots of places, but that’s what impressed me the most was just the little tiny adjustments that are probably even hard to notice from TV or the stands that these drivers can make and change the lap time of their cars.”

BRIAN SCOTT, No. 11 Dollar General Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 4th How does it feel to get a top-five finish? “Our Dollar General Toyota has had speed all year and we struggled the first few races to get the finishes we felt like we deserved. California is an awesome speedway for Joe Gibbs Racing and congrats to Joey Logano and the Translux guys. I’m just happy for our team, it was a run, a solid effort. We brought home a fourth — it feels like a win right now.”

How was your race? “I’m proud of everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing. What a great day to win the race and the second car to finish top-five. I’m just proud — I wanted so badly to get a good finish for these DG guys, everybody at Dollar General. They’ve been so supportive through so much bad luck early on. We had such a fast car at Vegas and we were leading. To have that disappointment — it just feels good to bring home a fourth-place finish for these guys. Everybody at Toyota in their backyard — just really proud and couldn’t be happier.”

KENNY WALLACE, No. 09 Toyota Camry, RAB Racing with Brack Maggard Finishing Position: 7th How was your race? “This finish was really what we needed. Our whole team has been beat up pretty bad this year with some bad luck from a blown tire to a blown motor. To have a seventh-place finish against the best in the whole United States like Kyle Busch. I believe my highlight of the day, I felt like a kid passing Kyle Busch five-wide on the apron with about five laps to go. We just needed a seventh-place finish, that’s all there was to it. Our cars are better this year — they’re faster and I’m excited.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota Camry, Kyle Busch Motorsports Finishing Position: 8th

JASON BOWLES, No. 81 American Majority Toyota Camry, MacDonald Motorsports Finishing Position: 15th How was your race? “It was okay, the finish was good — we needed to score some points. I can’t thank all the guys from American Majority and MacDonald Motorsports, Toyota for all their support this week. We’ve had two races with Toyota now and they’ve both been really good. We’ve had a warm welcome from them, so I can’t thank everybody enough. The race went good – we ended up 15th. We would have liked to be a little bit better, I think we were a little better there at the end, but we lost a lap there in the middle and struggled to get it back. We finally got it back at the end and we got the car a little bit better. I think I earned a lot, probably more than everybody else just because I’ve never raced on the oval here before and it was only my fifth Nationwide race. It’s something consistent that I run every week, but the race was good. I’m looking forward to Texas now.”

How was it racing so close to your home in Ontario? “It was good. I got to see my family and everybody got to come out and watch. I had family all around the area that came out. A lot of friends — my neighbors that I grew up with my whole life on my street just texted me and they’re here at the race track. It’s neat that everybody can come out and watch and see where I came from and see what I’ve done and realize why I’ve worked so hard for so many years and missed all those family functions and didn’t play with my friends like everybody else. Now they understand what I was doing and why I did what I did.”

TAYLER MALSAM, No. 19 G-Oil Toyota Camry, TriStar Motorsports Finishing Position: 16th

MIKE BLISS, No. 44 Bandit Chippers Toyota Camry, TriStar Motorsports Finishing Position: 17th

JOE NEMECHEK, No. 87 AM/FM Energy Wood & Pellet Stoves Toyota Camry, NEMCO Motorsports Finishing Position: 19th

ERIC MCCLURE, No. 14 Hefty/Reynolds Wrap Toyota Camry, TriStar Motorsports Finishing Position: 26th

JOHN JACKSON, No. 72 Crash Claims R US Toyota Camry Finishing Position: 42nd

    Michael Annett

No. 43 Pilot Flying J Ford Mustang

Michael Annett started the 150-lap NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Auto Club Speedway from the 16th position. Annett finished the Royal Purple 300 as follows:

11th—Michael Annett, No. 43 Pilot Flying J Ford Mustang

    ·         Saturday marked Annett’s fourth top-15 finish in just five races with Richard Petty Motorsports.

    ·         Annett made his 110th NASCAR Nationwide Series start this weekend.

    ·         In the early laps of the 300-mile event, Annett fought a car that lacked rear grip and Crew Chief Philippe Lopez made a variety of track bar and air pressure adjustments during the ensuing pit stops.

    ·         After each pit stop the Pilot Flying J car seemed to improve and following a Lap 105 stop, Annett reported the car was the best it had been all day.

    ·         Annett ran in the top-15 for the majority of the 150-lap event and was scored as high as ninth with just 20 laps remaining. By the end of the race, Annett was clicking off lap times as fast as the leaders.

    ·         Joey Logano claimed the victory Saturday afternoon in a race that saw the caution flag wave four times for a total of 18 laps.

    ·         Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was the highest finishing Ford in second position in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race.

    ·         Unofficially, Annett gained one spot in the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver point standings and sits in seventh position heading into Texas Motor Speedway.

Annett’s Thoughts After the Race: “It’s just really hard to pass here. Even if your car works really well on the bottom, the guy on the top is going to have the momentum and you just drag race every lap and flip-flop going into the corners. Before that final restart we were right around 10th and I thought, if anything, we were going to go forward from there. Then the caution came out and all day we didn’t take off like we needed to on restarts, so I knew we would probably lose two or three on the restart and then get those back.  We got them back pretty quick, but trying to run down the 33 (Brendan Gaughan) for a top-10 I used up the tires early in the run. He was running the top and momentum prevailed, but all in all, it’s was a good day. We’ve got another Pilot Flying J Ford Mustang without a scratch on it, so we’ve got two weeks and a stable of cars that we’ve run already that we can work on and make better.  We put this program together so quick that we haven’t had a chance to really sit back and do things exactly like we want. We’re close, but not exactly how we want, so we’ve got two weeks to get everything right and be a better team at Texas.

“The first race, besides Daytona, was a top-10 and then we had a 13th and two 11th’s, so we’re right there. This series is so tough though that ‘right there’ is not much.  It doesn’t take much to go back two spots, so it’s tough to gain that little bit, but we have the resources and everything at our finger tips to get the job done.”

The NASCAR Nationwide Series will take the next two weeks off and return to racing action in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 at Texas Motor Speedway, April 13, at 8 p.m. ET. The event will be broadcast on ESPN2 and PRN Radio.

[media-credit name=”Credit: Jonathan Ferrey/Getty Images for NASCAR” align=”alignright” width=”230″][/media-credit]Polesitter Joey Logano regained the race lead with 12 laps remaining in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Auto Club Speedway and held off Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for his first NNS win of the season.

“It’s good to be finally back in Victory Lane.  This is awesome to win here again.  We gave a couple away here lately and today we were able to capitalize on a car capable of winning.” Logano said.  “I forgot how much fun it was to do burnouts. It’s a lot of fun.”

This was Logano’s 10th career NNS win and also extended Joe Gibbs Racing’s streak of eight consecutive Nationwide Series victories at the speedway.

“It was a great day. It was a fun day. The race track was really racy. It’s just a bummer that we ended up two spots short, but I’ve got to thank all the guys for working hard on this.” Stenhouse Jr.said.

Brad Keselowski finished third, Brian Scott fourth and Austin Dillon finished fifth.

“On the last restart, it was just good racing. Joey and the guys just closed the deal out. I had a strong run all day, just needed a little more.” Keselowski said.

Series points leader Elliott Sadler finished ninth and now holds a 18 point lead in the standings over Stenhouse Jr.

Danica Patrick’s car picked up debris in the front grill, apparently puncturing her radiator and later causing the engine to seize. The team pushed her car to the garage and she finished 35th.

“It’s not a Chevy issue. It’s not a team issue. It’s just a bad luck issue, and unfortunately, I feel like we’ve been catching a fair amount of it at the beginning of the season.” Patrick said.

    Dodge PR

Brad Keselowski (No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger R/T) Finished 3rd “We started off really strong and drove off to the lead.  Things were looking really good and we had a great day going.  I had some pit stop trouble where I slid through the (pit) box a little bit and got pushed back a little bit.  I drove back to the front and up until that last caution was running second.

“On the last restart, it was just good racing. Joey (Logano) and the guys just closed the deal out.  I had a strong run all day, just needed a little more.

“A solid day for everyone on this Discount Tire team.  We moved back up to the front there at the end, but just needed a little bit more to run with Joey.  He was very, very strong just like the 6 car, Ricky Stenhouse Jr.  I certainly want to get a win.  We came up a little bit short today.  There were some things that I could have done a little bit better to get a win, but it just didn’t work out.”

IT SEEMED LIKE THINGS GOT A LITTLE CRAZY ON THAT LAST RESTART; HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT? “Yeah, sure, that’s always the way it’s going to be when you’ve got cars in front without tires, cars behind with tires.  That’s just good, hard racing.  I gave Joey a good push and helped him get the win a little bit earlier, or get to the lead a little bit earlier.  I got in the 60 (Trevor Bayne) just a little bit there.  I was there and he came down a little bit.  It wasn’t anything terrible.  I hope he’s all right with it.  The Nationwide cars put on an awesome show here, the way they draft and get around here.  This is one of the best races of the year for the Nationwide Series and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

SAM HORNISH Jr. (No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts Dodge Challenger R/T) Finished 13th “We almost pulled one off today in the Alliance Truck Parts Dodge.  We got track position late and just couldn’t take advantage of it on the restart.  We opted for two tires versus four late coming down pit road.  Sometimes works, sometimes it doesn’t.  We lost the balance of the car a bit after we made a slight air pressure adjustment and never really got the total balance back.”

    Ford Finishing Order:

    2nd – Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

    11th – Michael Annett

    14th – Trevor Bayne

    23rd – Joey Gase

    36th – Tim Andrews

RICKY STENHOUSE JR. – No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing 25th Anniversary Ford Mustang – “It was a great day.  It was a fun day.  The race track was really racy.  It’s just a bummer that we ended up two spots short, but I’ve got to thank all the guys for working hard on this.  All of the fans for coming out, we really appreciate that.  I hope we put on a good show and look forward to coming back next year.”

TREVOR BAYNE – No. 60 Ford EcoBoost Ford Mustang – “We took our tires early trying to gain some track position because we were like a 10th-place car all day.  I thought we had a shot at an easy top-three there if it would have stayed green, but when the 41 spun out and brought out the caution we just didn’t have any tires left, so we had to put on two right sides that were scuffs.  At that point, we had our bed kind of made already and it cost us a lot of spots there at the end.  I hate it because I really think we had a good shot there at the end to at least be a top-three finisher after a long day with that four-tire stop early.  It was a good gamble, but it just didn’t pay off this time.”

MICHAEL ANNETT – No. 43 Pilot/Flying J Ford Mustang – “It’s just really hard to pass here.  Even if your car works really well on the bottom, the guy on the top is gonna have the momentum and you just drag race every lap and flip-flop going in the corner.  Before that final restart we were right around 10th and I thought, if anything, we were gonna go forward from there and we weren’t gonna go backwards. Then the caution came out and all day we didn’t take off like we needed to on restarts, so I knew we would probably lose two or three on the restart and then get those back.  We got them back pretty quick, but trying to run down the 33 for a top-10 I used up the tires early in the run.  He was running the top and momentum prevailed, but, all in all, it’s a good day.  We’ve got another car without a scratch on it, so we’ve got two weeks and a stable of cars that we’ve run already that we can work on and make better.  We put this program together so quick that we haven’t had a chance to really sit back and do things exactly like we want.  We’re close, but not exactly how we want, so we’ve got two weeks to get everything right and be a better team at Texas.”

YOU’VE BEEN A TOP 15 CAR SO FAR THIS YEAR.  “Exactly.  The first race, besides Daytona was a top 10 and then we had a 13th and two 11th’s, so we’re right there.  This series is so tough though that ‘right there’ is not much.  It doesn’t take much to go back two spots, so it’s tough to gain that little bit but we have the resources and everything at our finger tips to get the job done.”

RICKY STENHOUSE JR. PRESS CONFERENCE – “It was a lot of fun. The first run we were too tight and then got it too loose there for the rest of the race, but it was interesting.  It was a lot of fun, a lot of three- and four-wide racing.  The restarts were pretty fun, especially that last one with a couple guys up there with no tires, so, hopefully, we put on a good show for the fans and hopefully they’ll start coming out a little more.”

IS THIS A TYPICAL NNS RACE HERE?  “I think so.  This race last year was really exciting also with four of us battling for the lead last year.  We ended up fourth and I know the Cup race proved to be a really good one last year, so I feel like this is an exciting race track for the fans to watch.”

Trevor Bayne: It’s appreciating the good days, not getting down on bad days

[media-credit name=”Brad Keppel” align=”alignright” width=”233″][/media-credit]“Winning doesn’t come easy when you get to these top levels. To me, it’s been taking it in, appreciating the good days, not getting down on the bad days. It’s such an up and down sport. It’s really a roller coaster. You also got to ride the momentum when you have it and stay behind your guys and work hard together. It’s all about chemistry and having a team behind you that believes in you.”

For Trevor Bayne, this season has been a roller coaster ride along with the question as to how many races he is going to be able to compete in this season.

In the Nationwide Series so far this year, Bayne has finished in the top-11 in every race this year.

“I think that’s about all you can ask for with the limited amount of people and cars we have because we weren’t preparing on running of the races,” he says while sitting third in points, 29 points behind Elliott Sadler.

Bayne’s Roush-Fenway Racing (RFR) knew coming into this year they would be running a limited schedule because of the lack of sponsorship they currently had.  Bayne says it’s tough. He adds that it used to be if you ran well, you’d be able to find that sponsorship.

“Now its about relationship, who you know and that’s makes it tough,” the 21-year-old says. “We’ve done a great job on and off the track and we should have something going on.

“It’d be great to get with a company, work with them and represent them to have some kind of long-term security in this sport. So being with a company and growing their brand is what helps you stay in this sport for a long time and that’s what I want to do.”

Bayne is trying to put the money together for this season, launching a campaign where fans can sponsor him in August at Bristol Motor Speedway. He says it started due to a guy from his hometown in Knoxville, Tennesse.

“He has a couple different websites and a couple different companies.  He’s kind of an innovator and investor,” he explains. “He came up with the idea and decided to put it on the car,”

Fans can go to and for a $20 sponsorship, they can get their name on the car and a certificate they can print saying they sponsored. If they want their photo on the car, then they can sponsor Bayne for $99.

“It’s taken off pretty really well,” Bayne says. “A lot of people have gone on and put their name on the car, their picture on the car and I think it’s a great idea. We would love to do as many races as we can do by getting funded by the fans so the more people give, the more I get to race and the more track I get to go to and run for the championship.”

Bayne started in racing at the age of five as both his grandparents were racers.  One involved with cars and one involved with boats.

“My family knew speed,” he tells the story. “I actually got my first dirt bike when I was three years old and started riding around with training wheels, and when I turned four, took the training wheels off. When I turned five, I got my first go-kart, went to the race track and just fell in love with it. From the first time I went there, I knew that’s what I wanted to do and I never looked back from that.”

He has continued to move up the racing ladder, one of the toughest challenges he has found is finding that opportunity.

I’ve always been very blessed, always came across the right people at the right time and the opportunity has been there,” he says. “For a lot of people, they don’t get that. Some of the best racecar drivers don’t get the chance cause they don’t come across the right people. So I’m blessed, but it’s still an issue.”

Bayne adds that it is still about finding that opportunity to connect with the sponsors, saying that “Every driver thinks they’re the best – it’s just convincing everybody else of that to get the support around you and behind you so you can go to the race track and show it.”

After racing the first 28 races of the 2010 Nationwide Series season for Michael Waltrip Racing in 2010, he caught the eye of Jack Roush and joined RFR in October of 2010. While racing for Roush, he has also had the opportunity to form a good friendship with teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

“We push each other,” he says. “Ricky is one of the best young drivers there is so having him as a teammate, it pushes me and I think that’s the same return for him. When one of us qualifies top three and the other qualifies 10th, we know we got to get on our game. We both feel like we can get it done and we want to push each other as hard as we can. We have fun while we’re doing it. It’s cool that we can stay friends and not get too competitive.”

Jack Roush then helped Bayne land a limited schedule Sprint Cup Series ride with Wood Brothers Racing.

“I love the Wood Brothers,” Bayne says. “I couldn’t ask for a better organization, or family to drive for. It seems weird calling them an organization cause they’re so much just a family.”

In just his second Cup race with the Wood Brothers in 2011, Bayne set the world on fire, winning the Daytona 500.

“I wish I could’ve soaked it in more because it happened so fast, I didn’t realize what was going on,” he says. “I was in such a whirlwind there so I didn’t get to soak it all in. I think slowly it’s kind of coming to me that we actually that.”

Bayne says looking at pictures of everybody smiling in victory lane, the moment is still surreal.

“That was the coolest thing that I could ever do in my career, even if I win another Daytona 500 or a championship,” he says. “I think that was the biggest shock I could have ever made and just do it with the Wood Brothers and their family and just the way it came together was just so picture perfect.”

Going back and forth between the two organizations has given Bayne a look at the best of both worlds.

Looking down the road five years in advance, Bayne says he sees himself as either a Sprint Cup Series Champion or at least contending to the make the Chase, but it all “depends on the opportunity, where I’m at, the sponsorship and how much I get to race.”

Whether Bayne is at the track or away from it, he stands by his belief for God and before going to Daytona this year, he took a trip to Africa to help the people there and says it was incredible.

“It’s just unbelievable the joy that they had,” he says. “The joy that they had, the peace, the smiles on their faces even though they’re living in shacks, mud huts. We got to do a lot of outreach and ministry stuff and led about nine people to Jesus. I felt like it was a really successful trip. I really felt like God was behind us on it and I enjoyed it a lot.”

Toyota NNS California Notes & Quotes — Mike Bliss – Tayler Malsam

TOYOTA NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Mike Bliss & Tayler Malsam — Notes & Quotes Auto Club Speedway – March 23, 2012

MIKE BLISS, No. 44 Doubletree Claremont Toyota Camry, TriStar Motorsports How has your season been so far? “The start of the season was Daytona and we ended up in a basket with about 30 cars. We started off the season really bad, I think we were 39th in points. After that point, we’ve steadily had pretty good finishes and now we’re at our fourth race. We’ve been having steady finishes.”

How has your past experience in the NCWTS helped you in your career? “I was fortunate to work with you (Amanda Ellis) in the Truck Series. You probably want to hear that. Pat yourself on the back. The Truck Series has been a great starting point for all of us drivers. It’s not really a starting point, it’s just where we started and raced there in the Camping World Truck Series. I’ve ran here a lot of times and I’ve won here once in a Truck. I just think the Truck Series really helped a lot in my career and where I started in NASCAR.”

What are your future racing goals in NASCAR? “Well, I’ve been doing some Sprint Cup races and I’m actually running one here. My career has kind of been weird — it’s been all over the place. I’ve never really landed any where. I’m kind of happy that way. I’m kind of every where, in the Camping World Truck Series, Nationwide and doing some Cup racing. I kind of just bounce around. Would I love to be just in the Sprint Cup Series and running that full-time? Yeah, that would be nice, but I enjoy what I’m doing right now. I enjoy bouncing around.”

Do you think NASCAR will ever bring Electronic Fuel Injection to the NNS? “I think definitely that’s a future that we’re probably going to be headed towards. I don’t know if it’s going to be next year or the year after. It’s quite a bit of money to change these cars over to that. I think in the Sprint Cup Series they pretty well have a handle on it. Surprisingly everything seems to be going good. We’ve ran into some problems, but it’s just stupid stuff putting stuff together, you have to be a little better putting stuff together a little smarter. It will definitely come over here, if its next year or the year after. I’m sure we’ll be running the fuel injection.”

Are you doing anything fun for the off-weeks? “I’m going to Martinsville.”

TAYLER MALSAM, No. 19 G-Oil Toyota Camry, TriStar Motorsports How has your season been so far? “We had a good finish at Daytona, stayed out of trouble there. The team has been working really hard all year. Like Mike (Bliss) said, we’ve had steady finishes and have finished races — that’s the key in this series. I think we’ll just keep going forward and hopefully stay in the top-10 in points.”

How has your past experience in the NCWTS helped you in your career? “I’ve ran all the tracks. I’ve been here in the Trucks once and at other tracks we’ve been in the Trucks, too. It’s a good learning experience there and helped me a lot in the Nationwide car. They don’t drive at all the same, but for the most part its still a race car and still the same track.”

Are you doing anything fun for the off-weeks? “I’m going to Disneyland — that will be fun. That’s about it, all I’m doing.”

Is it nice to have off-weekends? “Yeah, it will be fun. My sister lives down here in San Diego, so I’ll hang out with her all week and it’s just nice getting away for a bit and staying in the same town for more than three days. Obviously in the summer when you’re in Charlotte, it’s nice because you have the lake there. I’m just a huge Disney fan, so I’m going to be out here spending as much time as I can with all those characters.”

[media-credit name=”Iowa Speedway” align=”alignright” width=”222″][/media-credit]Local Bands, Pre-Race Concerts to Drive More Fans to Attend

NEWTON, IA. – March 22, 2012 – As part of the initiative to improve the already great fan experience, Iowa Speedway is moving this year’s concert acts to the pre-race festivities – allowing more fans an opportunity to attend. Also new for this year: local bands from around the central Iowa region will be performing on the opening night of each event weekend on the Grinnell Mutual Concert Stage.

“In review of last year, we have been asking fans where we can improve the overall fan experience; and concert times were one of our main topics of discussion,” said Stan Clement, president of Iowa Speedway. “From the feedback, we feel moving all but one of our concerts to pre-race really allows more fans to enjoy this benefit of having a race ticket.”

The May 19 and 20 event weekend has Loose Neutral, a classic rock band from Marshalltown, performing Saturday afternoon before the Iowa 150 presented by Graham Tire Company, and Bucky Covington, who was a former American Idol finalist, will get the crowd amped for the Pioneer Hi-Bred 250 on Sunday.

The June 22 concert will feature Route 66, a country band from Grinnell, playing the only post-race concert of the season after the Casey’s General Store USAC Challenge, and Marlee Scott, another ascending sensation in the country music ranks, will be performing prior to the Sukup 100 and Iowa Corn Indy 250 on Saturday, June 24.

Flipside, a variety band, from Des Moines, will play on July 13, followed by The Kentucky Headhunters, a country rock band, on Saturday, July 14. The race weekend in early August will feature performances from Standing Hampton, a classic rock band from Des Moines, on August 3. The Saturday night NASCAR Nationwide Series event on August 4 will have J.T. Hodges as part of the pre-race activities.

According to Clement, featuring some of the local sounds central Iowa has to offer was something fans wanted the Speedway to do, too.

“Getting these local bands up in front of several thousand people, from all over the country, is also a great way to showcase the talents of several Iowa based groups to people who might otherwise not hear them.”

The last race weekend, September 14 and 15, will feature Wikid Likir, a Newton based variety group, on Friday. The Lost Trailers will perform the last concert of the race season as they take to the Grinnell Mutual stage on Saturday afternoon, which will precede this inaugural NASCAR Camping World Truck Series date.
