Richmond International Raceway Staff Receive NASCAR Awards of Excellence

Richmond, VA (January 17, 2012)—Two Richmond International Raceway employees recently received awards acknowledging their commitment to excellent service they provide to RIR and the NASCAR community.

Linwood Burrow, director of track operations, and Seiji Kashiwabara, nursing director, earned the Track Services Award for Excellence and Nursing Director of the Year Award for Excellence, respectively, at the 2012 NASCAR Summit earlier this week.

“We are thrilled to have two of our staff members recognized at this year’s NASCAR Summit,” said RIR President Dennis Bickmeier. “Their continued enthusiasm and professionalism are vital to our operations throughout the year and on race weekend.”

NASCAR presents The Track Services Award for Excellence annually to an individual who has taken the initiative to significantly improve track services at a NASCAR National Series Track over the duration of a career of ten or more years. • Being a Cup start-and-park is more lucrative than being a Nationwide competitor

Being a Cup start-and-park is more lucrative than being a Nationwide competitor

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”213″][/media-credit]One might think I would be down right disappointed in Joe Nemechek. Front Row Joe once was a racer, but has since become a start-and-park owner, a man who was at the line for 36 races this past season. In those 36 races, he finished 39th or worse 33 times. Only thrice did he manage to not be among the final four, those heart stopping moments coming during the summer race at Daytona (30th), Indianapolis (38th), and the fall race at Loudon (36th). From Front Row to No Go Joe, but it is not his fault. Sure, as a driver/owner these past three seasons he has been among the Top 30 just three times in 97 starts with only a 14th place finish at Talladega in 2009 worth spit, but how can you blame the man?

Usually, a fellow would find himself sitting in the minors until he was ready for prime time. The organization would slowly grow, mature, and gather together the pieces necessary to make a go of it in the show. Then again, anyone remember the XFL? While the stats show Joe has averaged a 40th place finish over those 97 races, there is one important statistic we need to consider. Over that time, his Cup operation has earned him more than $7.8-million, almost $2.9-million in 2011 alone. Starting and parking has its rewards. He made just over $2-million in 85 events racing Nationwide in three seasons. Hell, Carl Edwards won the most last year in that circuit, and that barely topped $1.2-million. You might be starting to see that Mrs. Nemechek raised no dummies.

If you can take on-track prize money by starting and parking in Cup that amounts to more than twice what Nationwide’s leading money winner can claim, this becomes a no brainer. The sacrifices of driver Joe sure is helping the bottom line of team owner Joe. If he can save on tires, fuel, a crew, engine work, and expensive body repair, then all the better. I’m sure Joe Nemechek has dreams, maybe one day being able to run with the big boys. He might dream of actually going out to race, to run for points, maybe being the king of hill one day. For now, though, I think Joe is content in being able to continue making a living in the sport he loves, and doing so in the most intelligent manner he can.

I think the whole concept of start-and-go entries cheapens the sport in the same way that passing replacement players off as the real deal cheapens other sports. I think those not ready for prime time should run at a level they can compete at. I think that is how things should work from a fan’s point of view. However, Joe Nemechek would be an idiot to follow that line of logic when, as a businessman, he can make a hell of a lot more doing exactly what he is doing.

I’m not convinced those who start-and-park ever reach a level where they can actually compete. A few may have started underfunded, but I can’t think of one that started races only to park it a few laps in that ever became competitive. Yes, as a fan, the start-and-park cars out there are merely irrelevant window dressing at best, or clutter at worst. However, if Joe Nemechek can pick up a couple of million in sponsorship, more than match that in race earnings while keeping his expenses low, a fellow might just earn enough bucks by following his example. It might not exactly be racing, but you can’t fault Joe Nemechek, and those like him, for taking advantage of NASCAR’s rules, or a lack of them, in order to make a living.

  • Mike Wallace and JD Motorsports searching for sponsorships to fill 2012 season

Chrissy Wallace also looking to place her talents with a team

GAFFNEY, S.C. (January 10, 2012) – Mike Wallace and his No. 01 JD Motorsports Chevrolet team know a few things about this upcoming NASCAR Nationwide Series season.

The first is; – Daytona is coming up really fast, and they’re going to be there. The second is; they’re not sure who is going to be on their car as marketing partners all year.

So, the search for sponsorship is in full swing with Wallace and JD Motorsports to make them more competitive for the NNS schedule. G&K Services is going to be part of the team, just as they were last year.

“We know who some of our partners are going to be this year,” said Wallace. “We just don’t know what capacity they are going to be on the No. 01 Chevrolet. We appreciate everyone who becomes one of our partners.

“Like everyone else, we’re looking to add to our partnerships to help be the best we can at the track each week. We have a great team of people and know we can get the job done. We just need those solid partnerships to get us to that point.”

With 416 starts in the Nationwide Series, Wallace has shown he’s capable of getting the job done. With four trips to Victory Lane and 63 top-10s to his credit, he and the JD Motorsports team backed that up with a pretty good 2011 season.

With 18 top-20 finishes in 34 starts last year, they had a best finish of fifth at Road America. They were consistent qualifiers and come into the 2012 season after Wallace finished 13th in the Driver’s Standings.

Daughter Chrissy searching for place to put here talents

It’s rare when a father-daughter duo is race car drivers. What’s even odder is when they are both searching for help for a solid season.

Chrissy, 23, is coming off a historic year as the only female driver to win the ASA West Regional Championship and an ASA Track Champion, which she did through her efforts at Lebanon (MO) I-44 Speedway. With success like that, it only makes sense the third-generation driver seeks to move up the racing ladder into the NASCAR ranks.

She’s no stranger to NASCAR racing having made NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and Nationwide Series starts in the past. Now, she’s ready to show she can be just as competitive in those ranks as she was in ASA competition. Wallace started the ARCA Series finale at Toledo (OH) Speedway in October and has talked to some teams in that series, as well

“Everyone I talked to on NASCAR teams said to go show I could be a winner,” Chrissy said. “So, I went Late Model racing proved I could win and be a champion. I learned so much about car control, tire management and how to become a better driver last year.

“Now, I’m just looking to put all I learned to use with a NASCAR Truck, Nationwide or an ARCA team. Keeping this momentum going would benefit all of involved with my racing.”

This past Saturday night, January 7, the Wallace racing brothers of Rusty, Mike and Kenny were inducted into the Ozark Area Racers Hall of Fame in Springfield, MO. Kenny and Mike were on hand to receive the induction. Father Russ Wallace was previously inducted in 2004.

  • TURNER MOTORSPORTS ANNOUNCES MIKE SHIPLETT AS CREW CHIEF FOR KASEY KAHNE AND BRAD SWEET

TURNER MOTORSPORTS ANNOUNCES MIKE SHIPLETT AS CREW CHIEF FOR KASEY KAHNE AND BRAD SWEET

TURNER MOTORSPORTS ANNOUNCES MIKE SHIPLETT AS CREW CHIEF FOR KASEY KAHNE AND BRAD SWEET IN THE NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES

MOORESVILLE, NC (January 10, 2012) – Turner Motorsports is pleased to announce that Mike Shiplett has been added to the team’s roster of veteran crew chiefs to lead the No. 38 Great Clips team with driver Kasey Kahne and up-and-comer, Brad Sweet. It is a reunion of sorts for Shiplett and Kahne who were paired together in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) during the 2007 season and put down impressive results including two victories.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to join Turner Motorsports,” said Shiplett. “This is a team that has proven that they have all of the necessary tools to go out and contend for wins each and every week and I look forward to helping to add to their success. I’m especially excited to work with Kasey again and to establishing a strong relationship with Brad. Great Clips is the longest-running sponsor in the series, so I am very proud to represent them both on and off the track.”

Shiplett, a former racer himself, has over 20 years of racing experience and has worked at several championship-caliber teams in all three of NASCAR’s top touring series. The Ohio-native will have a unique opportunity next season to work with a successful veteran (Kahne) and an up and coming rookie driver (Sweet). Kahne will be driving the No. 38 for 15 races throughout the year with Sweet stepping in to fill out the balance of the 33 races on the NNS schedule.

For his part, Kahne looks forward to teaming back up with Shiplett and feels that he could be just the person to help lead the No. 38 Great Clips team back to victory lane.

“It will be great to work with Mike again,” said Kahne. “He’s done a lot in the sport and he will be a great asset to Turner Motorsports. This 38 team has been on the verge of getting back into victory lane and I think the addition of Mike to the team is just what we need to get us there.”

Great Clips, Inc. is currently the longest-running sponsor in the NNS and has used the Nationwide Series as their primary marketing platform for the last 11 years. Mark Green piloted the No. 38 for one season before general manager, Doug Stringer, hired up-and-coming talent, Kasey Kahne, thereby solidifying Great Clips commitment to their NASCAR sponsorship.

Nationwide Series champion Stenhouse named 19th recipient of Gorsline Scholarship

[media-credit name=”Photo credit: Chris Graythen/ Getty Images for NASCAR)” align=”alignright” width=”210″][/media-credit]INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 9, 2011) – Ricky Stenhouse Jr., of Cornelius, N.C., was selected to receive the 19th annual Gorsline Scholarship, presented by Gorsline Company of Rochester, N.Y. At the age of 23, Stenhouse won the hotly-contested 2011 Nationwide Series championship, his first, driving for Roush Fenway Racing. He was honored Sunday at the 42nd annual American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association’s (AARWBA) All-America Team dinner in Indianapolis.

The Gorsline Scholarship recognizes aspiring drivers and presents a program that provides tools that will assist these drivers in developing skills on and off the track to attain their professional goals.

As the scholarship winner, Stenhouse will work with Dr. Jacques Dallaire, Director of Performance Prime, to create an individually-designed performance-enhancement program, courtesy of Gorsline Company.

“It’s our privilege to name Ricky as this year’s Gorsline Scholarship winner,” said John Gorsline, principal of Gorsline Company, the leader in high-risk motorsports insurance. “He started racing go-karts at age 6 and in 17 years has had a hugely successful racing career, earning his first major championship in 2011. With team owner Jack Roush’s support and belief in him, he claimed the Nationwide Series crown, even before the final race was over.”

“I’m honored to be awarded the 2012 Gorsline Scholarship,” said Stenhouse. “The list of previous winners is quite outstanding and to be included among them is pretty cool. I hope that I can carry on the tradition of talented Gorsline Scholarship winners just as those before me.”

Stenhouse, who by the age of 15 had earned 47 A-main karting victories and more than 90 podium finishes, made a name for himself in 2007 when he drove for Tony Stewart Racing in the USAC National Sprint Car and USA National Midget Series. He took home five Midget wins and two Sprint wins en route to becoming Rookie of the Year in both series. In 2008, after joining Roush Fenway, he claimed his first stock car win in the ARCA RE/MAX Series in only his sixth career start. He led the points for three weeks before waging one of the closest championship battles in ARCA history and closing out the year with two wins, three poles and a fourth place in the standings.

The Olive Branch, Miss., native, then backed up a 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year title with the 2011 Series championship.

His other achievements throughout his career feature victories in a number of racing series, including American Sprint Car Series and USAC Silver Crown, proving he could successfully make the transition from winged spring cars to non-winged sprint cars.

Andy Villa, Gorsline Company partner, and previous Gorsline Scholarship winners Patrick Long and Josef Newgarden accepted the award on behalf of Stenhouse at the AARWBA dinner.

The Gorsline Company, headquartered in Rochester, N.Y., pioneered the business of providing insurance for high-risk professionals. The company specializes in providing racing drivers and owners creative, custom-designed insurance packages and estate planning strategies.

Previous recipients of the Gorsline Scholarship have been: 2011 Conor Daly 2010 Josef Newgarden 2009 Joel Miller 2008 Dane Cameron 2007 JR Hildebrand 2006 Katherine Legge 2005 Colin Braun 2004 Ryan Lewis 2003 Rocky Moran Jr. 2002 Danica Patrick 2001 Patrick Long 2000 Bryan Sellers 1999 David Besnard 1998 Buddy Rice 1997 Butch Leitzinger 1996 Jerry Nadeau 1995 Anthony Lazzaro 1994 Bryan Herta

  • RUSTY WALLACE RACING ‘CHANGING GEARS’ FOR 2012 NASCAR SEASON

RUSTY WALLACE RACING ‘CHANGING GEARS’ FOR 2012 NASCAR SEASON

MOORESVILLE, NC (January 6, 2012)–Officials of Rusty Wallace Racing, LLC (RWR) announced today that the team’s on-track activities will be put on a temporary hiatus.

While the organization’s day-to-day competition activities will temporarily cease, key elements of RWR’s business staff will remain in place to continue development of future opportunities.

The team is currently assisting No. 66 driver, Steve Wallace, in exploring several exciting opportunities for 2012, with backing from his current RWR sponsors.  RWR will continue to maintain and manage those sponsor relationships on Wallace’s behalf.

No. 62 driver, Michael Annett has been released from the team and will pursue other 2012 opportunities with his longtime family sponsor, Pilot Flying J.

Noted team owner Rusty Wallace, “This was a tough decision to make, but it was the prudent one from a number of perspectives.  While we had several great partners–such as Pilot Flying J–on board for 2012, we just didn’t feel like we had enough sponsorship in place to accomplish all of our goals.

“A lot of teams would have run with the level of funding we have now, but we want to ensure that our team has the resources necessary to compete and to improve our operations.  I promised myself and my family long ago that if the team wasn’t funded to a level with which we were comfortable, we just wouldn’t run it.  I’ve worked way too hard to put part of my life savings into a race team.

“So, we collectively decided to take a break, regroup and focus on the future.  We’ll keep working hard on sponsorship programs for Steve (Wallace) and for future seasons.  This also allows us to focus on the other aspects of our companies and our brand as well, whether it’s our car dealerships, new track design projects, licensing, personal services or even something new.

“Nearly all of our current partners are staying on board with us to support Steve in 2012 and we’re really grateful for their support. We’re working hard on an exciting 2012 program for Steve and hope to have an announcement on his plans soon.  We’re all very excited about working with our great group of sponsors both this year and well into the future.

“Most of all, I really want to thank all of our employees for their hard work and dedication.  One of the hardest parts of this decision was knowing the impact that it would have on our employees and their families.  It’s just the unfortunate reality that our sport is facing right now.  We wish all of our employees the very best in the future.”

Aric Almirola says He’s Better than Ever and Ready for Cup Return

[media-credit name=”Credit: Christian Petersen/Getty Images” align=”alignright” width=”244″][/media-credit]The last time that Aric Almirola had a Sprint Cup Series ride things went far from planned. The year was 2008 and Almirola had just signed with then Dale Earnhardt Inc. to share seat time with Mark Martin before eventually inheriting the ride full-time.

That time never came since prior to the 2009 season Almirola was informed that the team was being shut down, lack of sponsorship the cause. He landed back in the Camping World Truck Series then signed a multi-year deal with JR Motorsports in the Nationwide Series, the goal to win races and championships but that too didn’t go as planned.

In a good way however, because Almirola is now headed back to the Cup Series, looking for a second chance and a way to make things right. Wednesday afternoon he was officially announced as the new driver of Richard Petty Motorsports’ iconic No. 43 which had been vacated by AJ Allmendinger.

“I’m very, very excited about this opportunity to not only drive the historic and iconic 43 car, but to work with all the people here at Richard Petty Motorsports,” said Almirola.

“I had the privilege last year of sitting on the couch on Sundays and watching the races and I saw how competitive their racecars were on a weekly basis and that was a big factor in making the decision to come over here. Their competition on the race track was very, very high and that gives me an opportunity to get in a race car that I know is very competitive and where I’ve just got to go out and do my job and the results will come.”

A great opportunity for him but one that brings sadness because of the team he has to leave behind, JRM. This time last year he was talking about the contract that he had signed with them. Talking about how he wasn’t looking to jump back into the Cup Series too quick for fear of repeating what happened the last time.

This ride though, fits him better. While he admits he didn’t have the type of season with JRM that he anticipated – he did finish top five in points but failed to win a race – he grew as a driver. When he shows up in Daytona next month with his new it will be with a new attitude and a new sense of security behind the wheel.

“This is a great opportunity for me. You take the last couple of years, I felt like a few years ago I had the opportunity to go Cup racing but it wasn’t at this level,” Almirola said. “There were a lot of moving parts going on and it didn’t end up working out but I went back to Truck racing and ran very competitive in the Truck Series and won two races and finished second in points, and then that same year was the year I go to run five race in the 9 car and ran rather well for being my first time at a lot of those race tracks in a Cup car.”

According to RPM CEO Brian Moffitt it was the potential their organization saw in Almirola that put him on the top of the list when it came to finding a driver. The only thing they needed to figure out was sponsorship, which will be announced in the coming weeks. Everyone else involved, from Richard Petty himself to crew chief Greg Erwin, wanted Almirola from the get-go.

They looked past drivers like David Ragan and Brian Vickers, who have more Cup experience than Almirola. As well as wins on their resume. But it was the Florida native who continued to impress them throughout the 2011 season in the NNS, not making it surprising that they’re all aiming for the top in 2012.

“Our expectations and what we plan on moving forward with is top 20 and making the Chase this year,” said Moffitt of what RPM would like to see this year. “We set out goals last year with Marcos [Ambrose] and AJ to be in the top 20 and hopefully one of them make the Chase or top 15 and we actually hit that goal, and we expect the same with Aric and Marcos going into this year.”

On the other hand, this will be the first time that Almirola has run a full schedule in the Cup Series. He’s going to be a rookie all over again with “some growing pains” he says and plenty of learning ahead of him. They key though is to finish where the cars and the driver is capable of finishing. The points will take care of themselves after that, as long as Almirola is doing the job he and RPM feel he’s ready to do.

“I’ve always put more pressure on myself than anybody else has ever put on me,” said Almirola. “I’ve a very, very competitive person. I don’t like to lose a board game against my wife. I don’t like to lose playing cards and I don’t like to lose on the racetrack. My competitive spirit comes out when I’m on the racetrack and I don’t like to underperform by any means, so I put more pressure on myself than anybody else can put on me.”

Now, Almirola uses that pressure as motivation as finally moves forward to where he wants to be. Reflecting though on where he’s been and could have stayed. Comfortable and competitive with JRM, lucky to have landed on his feet after years of moving from team to team, series to series and wondering if he’d ever get another shot.

Back when he aimed for a car to be just his own, not one he shared with another driver. One that even while dominating races he was pulled out of in favor of a Cup driver. He was the next Joey Logano before Logano was even on the NASCAR map. Then fate got in the way, only to deliver him the driver seat of one of the most prestigious rides in racing.

He knows what he said a year ago, he knows that things won’t be easy. Then again, nothing about Almirola’s career has been easy. Except he isn’t about to let his dream get away because he wouldn’t take a chance and go make a career for himself.

“Every race car driver wants to race in the Cup Series,” said Almirola. “That’s just the fact of the matter. Nobody wants to compete at a lower level. Everybody wants to compete at the highest level that they can possibly compete at and I’m the same way. I got offered the opportunity to compete at the highest level in NASCAR with a great team that has very competitive equipment, so that made the decision a lot easier. Obviously, there are probably opportunities out there that I would have gladly stayed at [JRM], but this opportunity with this competitive equipment and this group of people was too hard to turn down.”
