We’re going to head to Homestead ready to give it everything that we have for the win. This team has worked with such drive and desire for the entire season, and I am proud to be a part of this team. CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 2 team will run chassis No. 062 during the season finale at Homestead this Friday night. This chassis has only been used in competition once this season, when Harvick captured the No. 2 team’s seventh victory of the season November 4 at Texas Motor Speedway.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Harvick climbed behind the wheel of the No. 2 Hunt Brothers Pizza Chevrolet Silverado as the Truck Series made its way to Texas Motor Speedway for the WinStar World Casino 350K on November 4. Harvick started the 147-lap event from the 10th position, before going on to lead the most laps (61) and capture the win. With the victory, KHI secured the 2011 Truck Series Owner’s Championship and clinched the Manufacture’s Championship for Chevrolet.

    HARVICK’S THOUGHTS ON HOMESTEAD:

What are your thoughts heading into the race at Homestead-Miami Speedway?

“I feel really good about the Truck Series race at Homestead. I’m a little more relaxed for this race, since we clinched the Truck Series Owner’s Championship after the victory at Texas. Of course the goal is to go out there and put the Hunt Brothers Pizza Chevrolet back in victory lane, but heading into the race knowing we have already achieved one of our goals for the season takes a bit of the pressure away. I think this will be a great race for the team, and I’m extremely excited to celebrate the owner’s championship after the race with the team and our sponsors.”

Clint Bowyer No. 33 Nationwide Series Advance: Homestead-Miami Speedway

    Clint Bowyer

No. 33 Rheem Heating, Cooling & Water Heating Chevrolet Impala

NASCAR Nationwide Series Race 34 of 34 – Homestead-Miami Speedway

THAT’S A WRAP: Just as the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) team started the season, they’ll end the season with driver Clint Bowyer behind the wheel of the Rheem Chevrolet Impala this Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. In nine starts with the team, he’s collected one pole (Daytona International Speedway in February), four top-five and six top-10 finishes with 144 laps led.

BY THE NUMBERS: KHI has made eight starts at the 1.5-mile South Florida track with one top-five and three top-10 finishes. KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick captured the organization’s best finish of second in the season finale last year while driving the No. 33 Chevrolet.

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 team has elected to compete with chassis No. 071 this weekend at Homestead. This chassis has been utilized 11 times this season with a best finish of third twice (Harvick at Auto Club Speedway in March and Paul Menard at Texas Motor Speedway in April). Most recently, Bowyer drove chassis No. 071 to a fourth-place finish during the second visit of the season at Texas Motor Speedway on November 5.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Bowyer and the No. 33 KHI team headed out west to Phoenix International Raceway for the second-to-last Nationwide Series event of the season last weekend. The Emporia, Kan., native qualified the Rheem Chevrolet Impala in the fourth position for the 200-lap contest and drove to a seventh-place finish.

THOUGHTS FROM THE DRIVER: CLINT BOWYER

“I’ve had a lot of fun racing in this No. 33 Chevrolet and with this KHI team this year. It’s hard to believe it’s the end of the season already. We’ve had some really solid races, but just haven’t had the finishes to show for it. I’m hoping to go out on top and get this Rheem Chevrolet to victory lane.”

  • Sam Hornish Said He Wouldn’t Regret Running Stock Cars, Saturday Makes It Worth Wild

Sam Hornish Said He Wouldn’t Regret Running Stock Cars, Saturday Makes It Worth Wild

For Sam Hornish Jr. there’s just something about Phoenix. The former open wheel driver scored his first career IndyCar win at the jewel in the desert in March of 2001 and on Saturday afternoon he did the same in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

[media-credit id=13 align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]It comes after he scored his first career Sprint Cup Series top 10 at Phoenix and after he started his first Cup and Nationwide races at the track. But it was also the place that the first time he saw it in a stock car he hit everything but the pace car. Saturday though, he was repeatedly praised and congratulated on his accomplishment.

“I can’t hardly believe it,” said Hornish. “It’s been a great day.”

Hornish’s win didn’t come by surprise or late race strategy. The No. 12 Alliance Dodge was in contention all day, leading 62 of 200 laps on their way to victory lane. Running a partial schedule with Penske Racing, team owner Roger Penske says that Hornish been humbled the last 12-18 months. Coming from the IndyCar Series where he’s won races and championships, it hasn’t been the same in NASCAR.

Part of it, says Penske, was his fault for putting in Cup Series before he was ready. Hornish was never given time to learn the craft, instead thrown right in with the big boys. He’s found a comfortable home though running in the NNS with crew chief Chad Walter and Penske’s working on putting together a deal for the team to run the full season in 2012. But on Saturday it wasn’t about the future, Hornish was living in the present and experiencing the feeling of being a winner again for the first time in many years.

“I don’t know if I was always as optimistic as Roger is,” said Hornish about his NASCAR potential. “I look back at 2008, I feel I had a great opportunity in 2008 and what happened that year was I had been so accustomed to being first all the time that when I came over I didn’t know how to take a 15th.”

There have been many learning curves for Hornish. He short and unaccomplished Cup career left many with doubt about his venture into the stock car world. Criticized on a weekly basis and insulted by five-time champion Jimmie Johnson could have scared Hornish away. But Penske told Hornish not to beat himself up and Hornish for his part kept after it, even though he too questioned his career move.

Not racing every weekend in 2011 also got to Hornish. Realization of just how much he wanted to run every lap he possibly could hit home as he longed to learn everything he could. A large part of his time has been devoted to testing for Penske and helping the full-time teams of Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski, who he beat on Saturday.

“This what I wanted,” said Hornish, who said he was glad that he’s stuck it out. “I came over here not because there’s more money or anything like that, it was because I was interested, I got a opportunity to run some Nationwide races throughout 2007 and after doing that I got to see there was something different out there and something that challenged me again.”

It’s been a big challenge that Hornish acknowledges and knew he would face. For the Defiance, Ohio native he would be just that, defiant to failure and instead used every situation he could to build his character. It all led him to Saturday in Phoenix when he beat some of the best in the business. Afterwards Hornish seemed at a loss for words when talking about his journey and those who helped him get there.

“I got a lot of people to thank and my dad’s probably one of the biggest ones,” said Hornish. “He kept telling me even through a tough season like this season, ‘Do you love doing it?’ and I said ‘Yeah, I love being in the racecar.’ He said ‘Well, keep doing it then.’”

Blessed is how Hornish describes himself. Emotional as well was Hornish and Penske, who said there would be a lot more of Hornish celebrations in the future. Keselowski, who again finished second to a Penske driver scoring this first win, said the same about his teammate’s bright future.

“Huge, huge day for Sam,” said Keselowski. “Sam has paid a lot of dues in this sport and it’s good to see him have some success. Obviously he’s gone two or three years at the Cup level had a couple times when he was close to getting that win and today he was able to get it done. Might be at the Nationwide Series but you have to start somewhere. This looks like a good fit for him.”

  • Top-10 in Phoenix Moves Michael Annett Two Spots in Championship Point Standings

Top-10 in Phoenix Moves Michael Annett Two Spots in Championship Point Standings

Avondale, Arizona (November 13, 2011) – A hard fought 10th place finish in the Valley of the Sun vaulted driver Michael Annett two positions in the 2011 Nationwide Series championship point standings. The 25-year-old was 10th in points heading into the weekend’s Wypall 200 at Phoenix International Raceway, but left the one-mile desert oval two spots ahead in eighth. Annett’s top-10 finish places him six points ahead of ninth place Brian Scott and seven points ahead of his teammate Steve Wallace who sits in 10th.

“We really didn’t start off with a top-10 car, but we stayed out of trouble and did our best with what we had. We were really free for three-quarters of the race and then in the last 50 laps we got the car happy enough to where we could actually drive it hard,” said Annett, “We were smart. We knew the car we had and we knew we couldn’t run up through the field. We let them make their mistakes and we were ready to jump on it towards the end. We did that and came out of Phoenix with a top-10. So we’re happy with that.”

Annett was the third highest finishing Toyota driver in Saturday’s 200 lap event. He earned his seventh top-10 finish of the 2011 season and Rusty Wallace Racing’s 13th top-10 finish so far this season.

“We definitely needed this top-10 for our No. 62 Pilot Flying J/Oakley team. Although we didn’t have the best car on the race track, we came out with a strong finish and that boosted us two spots in both the driver and owner points races. We’ll carry on the momentum from this turnaround finish to the last race of the season at Homestead and look for another solid run to close out 2011,” said Annett.

The 2011 Nationwide Series season winds down to the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway this week. The last Nationwide Series event of 2011 kicks off on Saturday, November 19 at 4:30 p.m. ET. Tune to ESPN2 and MRN Radio for live coverage of Saturday’s 300 mile season finale.

  • GameStop Team and Joey Logano Keeps Title Hopes Alive with Top-Five Finish at Phoenix International Raceway

GameStop Team and Joey Logano Keeps Title Hopes Alive with Top-Five Finish at Phoenix International Raceway

The Finish: Joey Logano, Phoenix International Raceway and top-10 finishes are all too common of friends. Logano, racing in the No. 18 GameStop Toyota Saturday, started the Wypall 200 in the ninth position, fought a sometimes tight and sometimes loose racecar during the afternoon, but still prevailed to score a fourth-place finish and keep the title hopes alive for the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team. Heading into next week’s season finale for the NASCAR Nationwide Series, the No. 18 team holds a one-point lead on the No. 60 Roush Fenway team in the race for the Nationwide Series Owner’s Championship.

The Race Recap: Logano made his fourth start of the season behind the wheel of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on Saturday afternoon with GameStop and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on the side of the car. Logano and the rest of the field didn’t know what to expect from the newly repaved Phoenix International Raceway, with one-groove proving the only way to go in Thursday and Friday’s extended practice sessions. However, once the green flag flew, it was obvious that racing was going to be just fine. After qualifying ninth, Logano and the No. 18 spent the first part of the race feeling out the track.  A couple of early cautions allowed Logano and crew chief Jason Ratcliff to talk over the handling of the car, which Logano reported as loose. After an early round of stops, Logano started his march to the front, breaking into the top-five by lap 90.  It was obvious to Logano, Ratcliff and the No. 18 team that Logano’s GameStop Toyota was much better on long runs than short runs. At one point just past halfway, Logano was the fastest car on the track by nearly a half second. Fantastic pit stops by the No. 18 team got Logano into second with 50 laps to go, racing Sam Hornish for the lead.  Logano was once again the fastest car on the track.  However, several late-race cautions over the race’s final 30 laps didn’t play into Logano’s hand.  Once again, he found the No. 18 difficult to handle on the short runs and better on long runs.  As the checkers flew, Logano crossed the line in the fourth position while trying to run down third place Carl Edwards. The fourth-place finish was Logano’s sixth top-10 finish in six career Phoenix NNS events.

Joey’s Quotes: “We had a really good GameStop Toyota today.  The car was really fast. The problem is the car was fast after about 10-15 laps.  The first part of a run or right after a restart, the car wasn’t good at all.  I spent those first 10 laps just trying to hold on and not lose too many spots.  We might only lose one or two spots, but we would lose three, four or five seconds to the leader.  And then we would come on and we would be the fastest car on the track.  There were times Jason (Ratcliff, crew chief) was reporting that we were running two or three tenths faster than the leaders.  But when you fall five seconds behind the leaders, it takes a lot of fast laps to catch up.  But the car was great.  That was one of the best cars I’ve ever had here at Phoenix.

“We were fast despite all of the worries about the racetrack.  A lot of us were worried about how the racetrack was going to be and if it was going to be just one lane.  It took a while but eventually, there was a bit of a second groove, especially down in turns three and four. There were times I was up in the second groove and I thought I was going to lose some spots and I was actually able to hold my ground and even take spots back away.  And now you add that apron down in the dogleg and that adds a whole new aspect to racing. You go down there and I swear it about knocks your helmet off. It’s such a hard hit when you go down there. But it’s such a shorter distance. You can drive right underneath a car doing it that way. That’s one way we were passing cars, for sure.

“I’m glad we were able to get fourth and keep the No. 18 team in the points hunt.  They are really going to have to work for it next week to beat Carl and that 60 team, but if anyone can, this 18 team can. It’s going to be exciting. Hopefully, we can win the race down at Homestead in the No. 20 and the No. 18 team will finish second right behind us and we can celebrate a win and a championship together.”

What’s Next:  The GameStop Toyota and Logano will round out the NASCAR Nationwide Series season at Homestead-Miami Speedway next weekend. Logano will be back behind the wheel of the No. 20.

  • SAM HORNISH, JR. WINS FIRST CAREER NASCAR EVENT IN WYPALL* 200 AT PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

SAM HORNISH, JR. WINS FIRST CAREER NASCAR EVENT IN WYPALL* 200 AT PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finishes fifth in pursuit of 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series title

(PHOENIX, Ariz.) – Sam Hornish, Jr., already a two-time winner at Phoenix International Raceway in the Indy Racing League, became the first-ever driver to win at PIR in both an Indy Car race and a major NASCAR event. He finished first in the NASCAR Nationwide Series WYPALL* 200 at the newly repave and reconfigured 1-mile oval.

[media-credit name=”Mike Finnegan” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]Hornish left pit road in second place in his Alliance Truck Parts Dodge after a two-tire, yellow-flag stop on lap 133.  On the following restart, he surged past leader Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., from the outside lane.  He survived three more restarts to best second-place finisher and teammate Brad Keselowski to deliver the 10th career win at PIR to car owner Roger Penske. Penske has owned eight Indy car winners at Phoenix, including the last by Hornish in March 2005.  Rusty Wallace contributed the other NASCAR win in the Sprint Cup Series in 1998.

Hornish was excited about PIR’s new banking and backstretch dogleg. From victory lane, he roared, “I love the new track I think it’s the greatest thing ever!” Later he said, “The way you could pass people in the dog leg and drive way down on the flat and do things like that was wild. I knew we had a good car and I knew we would run strong.”

Stenhouse went on to finish fifth today and all but lock up the 2011 Nationwide Series title.  He leads Elliott Sadler by 41 points with one race remaining. Stenhouse led 73 laps today, more than any other driver, in his Ford Drive One Ford but couldn’t hold off Hornish in turn 1 when the most critical move of the race took place on a lap 140 green flag.

The championship hopes of Sadler all but died and those of pole sitter Aric Almirola officially ended in a three-car wreck on lap 177. Sadler, on the inside of the track coming off turn 2, drove quite low and came up in front of Almirola and Jason Leffler as the three battled for spots in the top 10. Leffler tapped Sadler, slid into Almirola, and all three hit the turn 3 wall.  Veteran Morgan Shepherd also was collected in the crash that brought out a red flag for 11 minutes and 27 seconds.

Sadler, who finished 27th, blamed Leffler, saying, “The number 38 (Leffler) just run right into the back of us. Not much respect for guys running for the championship.” Leffler took full responsibility, noting, “It’s tough back there because when a guy slides across there he clears you but it kills off (his) momentum. He’s (Sadler) a good driver, smart driver. So obviously he lifted early to keep from blowing the corner.”

Almirola, who harbored a slim chance to stay in NASCAR Nationwide Series contention, started as if he wanted to run away with today’s race.  He led the first 66 laps until overtaken by series points leader Stenhouse.

Joey Logano, driving the No. 18 Game Stop Call of Duty MW3 Toyota, had his sights set on Carl Edwards in the World Financial Group Ford. While Kyle Busch mostly has piloted his car this year to within two owner points of Edwards’ Fenway-Roush Racing machine, it was left to Logano to try to catch Edwards today.  He couldn’t quite make it, finishing in fourth place, one spot behind Edwards.  However, the owner points remain an open question as the Teams head to Homestead-Miami for next week’s 2011 finale.

Several drivers from today’s race – Edwards, Logano, Clint Bowyer, and Joe Nemechek – will stick around for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Kobalt Tools 500 at PIR, which will go a long way in determining the season’s champion.  Edwards leads Tony Stewart by three points.

Although grandstand seats for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series are sold out, fans can still catch the action live from PIR’s hillside area. Hillside area tickets are $40 on race day and children 12 and under are admitted free. Hillside tickets do not allow access into the main PIR gates including the Fan Midway. For tickets and information, log on to www.PhoenixRaceway.com or call 866-408-RACE (7223).

SAM HORNISH JR. (No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts Dodge Challenger R/T)  Race Winner “I don’t know how to quite do this whole victory lane thing on the NASCAR side and standing up on the side of the car so I had to jump back up there to get another picture.  Chad Walter (crew chief) made a great call bringing me down for two.  We felt like we were really good getting going but we didn’t have long run security but two tires might help us turn a little better and boy did it ever.  I’ve just got to thank all the guys on the Alliance Truck Parts team and also Penske Racing.  They’re giving me good race cars.  It’s been an up and down year and we felt like we were close a couple of times and to be able to come and kind of sneak one today even though we did have four restarts there towards the end.  I’m just super-thrilled about it.”

WHERE DOES THIS WIN RANK IN YOUR CAREEER?  “I won so much over there (Indy car racing) that I didn’t know how much to appreciate it at the time.  I came over here and I wanted the challenge of racing these cars because it was the next step.  It was something new, it was something that motivated me again.  There was many times where I shook my head and go ‘Why did I do this?’  But I did know that I would always regret not trying it so I’m just really, really excited that we were able to keep going.  It ranks right up there.  My next goal is I want to run for a championship next year and get the funding to be able to do that and then obviously how to figure out how to win a Spring Cup race.”

DO YOU FEEL LIKE A NASCAR DRIVER NOW?  “I feel like I’m a lot closer. I feel like a lot of the other drivers may have questioned that at times but then when they saw me stick with it and run a part-time schedule this year because this is where I wanted to be.  I want to be successful over here and not knocking Indy car in any way, shape or form.  I’m just super-excited about this opportunity.  I feel like I’ve been a NASCAR driver for a while but I didn’t have that win checked off there.  We’ve got one down and we’ll keep working at it some more.”

ARE WE GOING TO SEE YOU NEXT YEAR?  “We’re hoping so.  We’re not full-time yet.  We don’t have it all signed up yet but we want to be, we want to run for championship.  We feel like we’re getting closer. Today probably helped us out a little bit.”

BRAD KESELOWSKI (No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger R/T)  Finished Second “Very good run.  Just had to be smart, had to be there at the end.  We saw a lot of wrecks today, a lot of action.  I told somebody, they asked me how they thought this race would play out and I thought it’s either going to be one of the best races of the year or one of the worst and it ended up being one of the best.  Really, really happy with how the race track turned out.  I think we saw a lot of passing and a lot of action and all in all just a lot of fun.”

COMMENT ON THE LINE THAT YOU WERE RUNNING OFF TURN 2 AND DOWN THE BACKSTRETCH.  “Well, if you pave it, I’ll use it (smiles). And they paved it so I’ll use it.  You know it was kind of fun.  I think I might have a concussion from running down there the way it beats your head up against the headrest.  I’ll take an Advil tonight be just fine so it was a good run.”

HOW ABOUT YOUR TEAMMATED SAM HORNISH JR. GOING TO VICTORY LANE?  “Man, that sure is great.  Sam has paid a lot of dues in NASCAR and it’s great to see him get some success out of it.  This is like his third or fourth year.  That Nationwide team with Chad Walter and Alliance Truck Parts and him, they’re going to be tough to beat next year if they can run for the championship.  I hope RP (Roger Penske) can put that together.  He’d be the favorite if he can run he did today.”

YOU HAD A GREAT RUN TODAY.  “We had a great Discount Tire Dodge Challenger and made our way through the field there and just ran a smart race.  Great pit stops and great teamwork to finish 1-2 for Penske Racing.

HOW WAS THE TRACK?  “It’s really gripping up and a lot of fun.  I’m excited about the race tomorrow.”

WAS THERE MORE GRIP WHEN YOU CUT ACROSS THE APRON THE BACKSTRETCH? “It is shorter (laughs).  And you’re supposed to go the shortest way around, right?

    HORNISH PRESS CONFERENCE

SAM HORNISH JR. (No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts Dodge Challenger R/T)

“We had a good day.  We had a good car.  It’s been a great day.  We had a good car starting out the race.  We hung out fifth or sixth-place and eventually came down and decided to go for two tires. I don’t know what else he changed but that thing turned so much better than what we had.  Man, I’m so happy about it.  I came out here and I saw the new race track and I’m like ‘I don’t know’ but I love it now. It’s been a lot of fun.  Phoenix has always been one of my favorite places.  I started my first Nationwide race here, my first Cup race here, won my first Indy car race here and won my first Nationwide race.  We’ve got some more work to do, obviously, but I feel blessed to be here and drive this Alliance Truck Parts Dodge.  I’m thankful for all of our supporters at Penske Racing and also Nationwide for what they do, Shell/Pennzoil, and most importantly Roger (Penske) for keeping me in the car.  We had a partial schedule and this year.  He gave us the opportunity to come out here and run once in a while.  We felt like there were a couple of other times this year we had an opportunity to win so it feel great to win.  We’ll just keep working.”

ROGER PENSKE (Founder and Chairman, Penske Corporation) TALK ABOUT THE LAST YEAR FOR PENSKE RACING IN NATIONWIDE.  “Well I feel for Sam.  He’s been real humble for the last 12-18 months, coming off being an Indy 500 winner, coming over here and aspirations to run up out front.  Maybe I made a mistake putting him at the top when he couldn’t practice but the two of us decided to stay together.  I’ve got to thank Chad (Walter, Crew Chief) and obviously Sam because a lot of the success we’ve had on the Cup side has been because these guys have been doing all the testing.  I think this sets up for what we want to do next year.  Obviously our goal is to run for the championship in Nationwide with Sam next year.  Alliance is our partner and Chad the crew chief and this is a great win for us.  Both of the cars running one-two is pretty special because there’s real competition out there today and to run here on a new track is exceptional.  I just want to thank Sam.  I remember when we raced here when we went back in Indy and Sam whipped us here with that yellow Pennzoil car.  I’ll never forget that.  This is a special place for us.”

CHAD WALTER (Crew Chief, No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts Dodge Challenger R/T “Somebody asked me earlier, this is a real special one because coming off a full Nationwide schedule for two seasons and not quite being able to put all the pieces together and back that up for a full season was a little disappointing, a little disheartening.  I manned-up and got over it, and we went out and did the work that we were asked to do.  I think that week in and week out helps and this is a big accomplishment to come in here and race hard, race smart; not necessarily have the best race car for 100, 150 laps but not take yourself out of position to maybe get back in there and give it a shot.  He raced probably one of the best in the business right now in his teammate Brad Keselowski. Had a good restart against the 20 and the 6 and the guys who are week in and week out regulars. We beat ‘em.  We beat the pants off ‘em.  This guy, and I’ve said this before about him, we come in here and do this week in and week out, we don’t have to win every race.  It’d be nice but it’s not probable but we can come in here and be competitive week in and week out we’re looking at a good future at Penske racing.”

PENSKE:  DID YOU EVER DOUBT THAT SAM WOULD WIN IN NASCAR?  “Well we won in NASCAR. We won the all-star race at Charlotte, what, three years ago I guess it was.  So we had a win there.  I said to him that we’re going to put this together one way or another.  I think what Chad talked about having to step back, and to do the work they did to keep the team going and literally piece it together and this is a byproduct of hard work and commitment.  You’re going to see a lot of Hornish in the winner’s circle in the future.”

HORNISH:  I don’t know if I was always as optimistic as Roger is but Roger told me to keep my head down and don’t beat myself.  I look back at 2008 and felt like I had a great opportunity in 2008, coming over and running and what happened that year was I’d been so accustomed to being first all the time that when I came over I didn’t how to take a 15th.  Two 15ths beat a first and a 43rd.  It took me a while to be able to get back there and plus you race every weekend and this year has been something to think about.  I want to run every lap that I can possibly run out there and Roger told me after last week’s race at Texas that we had a car that could win.  We just had a bad set of tires that just didn’t fit our car quite right and we went back to like 12th or 13th. We got back up to seventh and Roger told me I was my own worst critic. You just have to do the best that you can and continue to move forward.  I’m glad that I stuck it out.  This is what want.  I came over here not because there was more money or anything like that.  It was because I got an opportunity.  I was interested in it, I got an opportunity to run some Nationwide races throughout 2007, and after doing that I got to see that there was something different out there to challenge me again.  Was it the challenge I thought it was?  Heck yeah it was.  It was a big challenge for sure.  I don’t think I ever got to a point where I didn’t feel like if I kept my head down and I put myself in the right position I was going to win.”

COMMENT ON YOUR EMOTIONS AFTER THE CHECKERED FLAG AND ON THE COOL DOWN LAP.  “It went a lot easier for me than I thought it was going to. The cool down lap was great and even coming down pit road because there was a lot of guys that were excited.  One of the toughest things was, running the Dan Wheldon visor strip, he ran his first two races at Panther as my teammate.  I wouldn’t say that we were the best of friends but we raced the heck out of each other quite a bit.  We actually tied for the 2006 championship.  He’s somebody I’ll miss racing quite a bit.”

WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU’VE BEEN THIS EMOTIONAL?  “I’ve been pretty emotional at times.  I feel like there’s a lot of good days.  Today is great but tomorrow is going to be even better ‘cause I’m going to see my little girl for the first time in a week-and-a-half.  Two weeks ago I was getting my little girl ready for bed and I couldn’t take my eyes off her and she turned to me and said she told me ‘I’m complicated.’”

Sam Hornish Jr. plays strategy to perfection and wins his first Nationwide Series race

We knew Sam Hornish Jr. had a good car all day long, but for the three years he was racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, it seemed like he couldn’t find any luck. Hornish finally found the lucky charm as he played the two tire strategy and held off teammate Brad Keselowski for his first NASCAR Nationwide Series win on the new configuration at the Phoenix International Raceway.

[media-credit name=”Mike Finnegan” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]The first lap proved to be very treacherous for drivers as an eight-car crash ensued on the first lap in Turn 3 when Brian Scott was turned head-on by Reed Sorenson into the outside wall. Jeff Green, Danica Patrick, Johnny Chapman, Ron Hornaday, Matt Frahm, and Tim Andrews all couldn’t avoid the melee.

Reed Sorenson didn’t receive any damage from the incident despite spinning, but later met karma as he lost a right-front tire and pounded the wall. A fire burst from the hood and NASCAR safety crews were sent to extinguish the fire. This crash doesn’t help Reed’s cause to keep position #5 in the point standings.

Canadian native D.J. Kennington saw his day come to an end with a cut tire, along with Mike Bliss and Derrike Cope who were both involved in separate incidents.

The incident between James Buescher and Steve Wallace was avoidable. Going into Turn 3, Wallace gave Buescher a shot. Wallace gave Buescher another shot and wrecked him and while trying to avoid the wreck, Wallace was turned and wrecked himself on the front straightaway. Both drivers were ok.

Elliott Sadler saw his championship hopes crumble after being wrecked by Jason Leffler going into Turn 3. Sadler had passed Leffler moments before and gave him extra room just to be safe, but Leffler drove into Turn 3 too deep and tapped Sadler. Morgan Shepherd drove into the carnage as this was the second incident he was involved in during the day. This accident caused a red flag as officials were sent in to clean up the mess.

Sam Hornish Jr. had led 62 laps into the race, but the man of the day was Ricky Stenhouse Jr. who had led 62 laps. When it came to the final pit stops, Hornish took a gamble for two. Many sports analysts on Twitter doubted Hornish and didn’t believe two tires would work on the new configuration. Hornish proved everyone wrong to win the race!

Will this set Hornish up potentially for a Sprint Cup ride next year? Or is this just considered ‘Beginners Luck’?

  • TOYOTA NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Post-Race Notes & Quotes Phoenix International Raceway

TOYOTA NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Post-Race Notes & Quotes Phoenix International Raceway

Joey Logano (fourth) was the highest finishing Toyota driver in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Phoenix International Raceway.

Camry drivers Ryan Truex (eighth) and Michael Annett (10th) also earned top-10 finishes in the 200 lap event.

Truex was also the highest finishing rookie in the race.

Other Toyota drivers in the field included Joe Nemechek (12th), Kenny Wallace (17th), Steve Wallace (29th), and Brian Scott (42nd).

Four Camry drivers are among the top-10 in the unofficial NNS driver point standings — K. Wallace (seventh), Annett (eighth), Scott (ninth) and S. Wallace (10th).

Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 18 Camry team currently leads the unofficial NNS owner point standings by one point after 33 of 34 races.

JOEY LOGANO, No. 18 GameStop Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position:  4th How was your race car today? “We had a fast car.  We had a pretty good GameStop Toyota.  We just didn’t take off during restarts.  The first 10 laps we were just junk — and we’d lose all the track position we had — and then we’d get going and be fast.  It just took us too long.   Once we got going we were all about the same speed too anyway.  That’s awesome for Sam (Hornish).  He’s a great guy.   Awesome to see him win.  Much rather have the old GameStop Toyota in victory lane.  I felt like I had a car that can do it. Just had to work on our front side speed.”

How much did the track change during the race? “Not as much as I thought, but it did change some for sure.  Actually, the top side over in (turns) three and four actually starting working it self in pretty good.  Just hard to figure out what you think the track is going to go in a certain direction — you adjust to it towards that and then it doesn’t do that.  Then it’s really just an educated guessing game out there.  It just didn’t change as much as I thought it would.”

Did you take advantage of the apron? “Yeah.  That’s a good way to pass cars.  It’s really weird though.  You go down there and I swear it about knocks your helmet off.  It’s such a hard hit when you go down there.  It’s such a shorter distance.  You can drive right underneath a car doing it that way.  It’s kind of weird.  I don’t know if they’ll change anything about that to stop us from doing that.  That’s one way we were passing cars, for sure.  It was really weird.”

Why were drivers using the apron? “It’s such a shorter distance.  It feels like you’re cutting a quarter-mile off the track doing it that way.” Do you expect to see drivers using the apron Sunday? “Probably be a little bit harder in a Cup car, but I think people will do it.” Did you learn anything that will help you Sunday? “I learned quite a bit.  This is one of those races that you’re glad you’re running double duty.”

RYAN TRUEX, No. 20 Martin Truex Jr. Foundation Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position:  8th How was your race? “It was good.  I think we had a better car than where we finished.  We started off there and just dropped back a little bit.   Our car was too loose at the start of the run.  We knew that was going to happen on the green flag.  The track was just not in good shape at all.  Pretty much everyone on the outside went backwards.  We just worked on it and got it pretty good there on the long run, we were just a little too loose on the start of a run to stay up there with those guys.  After about five laps we’d get really good, but those five laps we’d lose spots just because we were so free.  It was a good day I guess, can’t complain about an eight-place finish with all the wrecked cars we have out here, so I’m happy about it.”

Did you use the dog leg to get around the track? “Yes, very useful. We weren’t sure about it coming here.  You look at it and it looks like there was so much room.  If those guys were racing in front of you and you drive way down there, you can just blow by all of them.  I don’t know how NASCAR feels about it, but it’s a pretty good way to pass some cars.”

RYAN TRUEX, No. 20 Martin Truex Jr. Foundation Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing (continued) What do you think about your chance to be series ‘Rookie of the Year’ this year? “I don’t know if this is enough to take the lead or win it or what.  I gave it my best and we’ll see what happens.”

How does it feel to be ‘Rookie of the Race’ in your final event of the year? “I wasn’t worried about it in the race, I knew we had a good car and I knew we had all six races I’ve been in this car. It was a crazy race to say the least.  The way you could pass people in the dog leg and drive way down like that was wild.   There were a few guys out there that tried to get respect and I guess I have to earn it being a rookie.  It was a good race.  I think we should have finished better, we probably adjusted out of it a little bit in the end.  I had fun and hopefully we can get ‘Rookie of the Year’.

MICHAEL ANNETT, No. 62 Pilot Flying J Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing Finishing Position:  10th How was your race? “Eventful, we didn’t start off with a top-10 car.  We were disappointed because we did have holes in practice, so I guess with the sun beating down on the track all day, we just kind of got behind a little bit and were really free for three-quarters of the race and then the last 50 laps we got the car happy enough to where I felt comfortable actually driving it hard.  We were smart, we knew the car we had and we knew we couldn’t run up through the field.  We let them make their mistakes and we’ll be ready to jump on it and we did and came out of Phoenix with a top-10.”

What did you think of the new track after racing on it? “It’s pretty crazy.  It’s just hard for the spotters to say ‘inside.’  Really, I did more just watching the mirror and trying to see how much track was between myself and the car in the inside because as far as he is inside, but he might be four car lengths down there.  If they say ‘three-wide,’ you just really don’t know.  I said to my spotter, ‘what they need to do is put a big patch of triangle grass out there to keep everybody from going down there’ just because this place is hard enough for spotters to spot where they do from the corner, they don’t need that added complication.”

JOE NEMECHEK, No. 87 AM/FM Energy Pellet & Wood Stoves Toyota Camry, NEMCO Motorsports Finishing Position:  12th

KENNY WALLACE, No. 09 Toyota Camry, RAB Racing with Brack Maggard Finishing Position:  17th

STEVE WALLACE, No. 66 5-Hour Energy Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing Finishing Position:  29th

BRIAN SCOTT, No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position:  41st
