David Ragan To Pilot Randy Hill Racing Entry At Texas Motor Speedway

JUSTIN, Texas (November 1, 2011) – – Officials from Randy Hill Racing (RHR) announced today that NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) driver David Ragan will pilot the No. 08 Texas Tech University Ford Mustang in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway.

Ragan, a two-time winner in the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Talladega ( Ala. ) Superspeedway and Bristol ( Tenn. ) Motor Speedway respectively replaces Casey Roderick who remains the team’s primary driver. Roderick, 19, will be in attendance for Saturday’s contest to support the team and confer with Ragan.

The change comes as Randy Hill Racing has attempted to make its last two NNS starts at Richmond ( Va. ) International Raceway and Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway respectively but failed to earn a starting berth. Ragan’s experience will undoubtedly give the RHR team a fair evaluation of the team’s overall program.

“We believe in Casey Roderick and he will race again with us,” Randy Hill said, “but this is a huge race for us and we’ve asked our fellow Ford Racing driver David Ragan to jump in the No. 08 Texas Tech University Ford Mustang in an effort to give us an assessment on the positives and negatives of a new Nationwide team. Ragan is a proven wheelman and we believe he can get the job done this weekend.”

“I’m excited about the opportunity to drive in the Nationwide series again,” said Ragan. ”It will be fun working with the new team of Randy Hill Racing, and helping them develop their program. We expect to be fast and to run up front on race day.”

To some it’s not a surprise to see the Unadilla, Georgia native behind the wheel of the team’s Ford Mustang as the car that will be utilized this weekend previously exited the Roush Fenway Racing stables. Should the 25-year old make the field on time, it will be his first Nationwide race since competing at Phoenix ( Ariz. ) International Raceway in 2009.

“We haven’t decided 100 percent if we are going to go to Homestead , so this could be our last race of the year,” sounded Hill, a successful Texas entrepreneur. “Should everything go like we think it should, we will have data and feedback that will only make this team stronger entering the 2012 season with Casey Roderick.”

For his hometown race, Hill will sport the Texas Tech University colors on the team’s No. 08 entry. RHR will encourage football and NASCAR fans to unite and cheer on Texas Tech in their bid to defeat Texas in the highly anticipated showdown Saturday night.

The team will continue to be led by Jeff Spraker of Spraker Racing Enterprises.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge (200 laps / 300 miles) is the 32nd of 34 events on the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule. The first practice session of the week begins on Friday, November 4th, from 9:00 am to 10:15 am. The final “happy hour” practice session will run from 10:40 am to 11:55 am. Qualifying is set for later on Friday at 5:35 pm. The field will take the green flag at 11:55 am on Saturday November 5th with live coverage on ESPN2, the Performance Racing Network (Radio) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Satellite, Channel 90). Pre-race coverage of the contest lifts off at 11 am on ESPN2.

No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet News and Notes

    • Back for More – Brian Vickers will again jump behind the wheel of the No. 32 Dollar General Chevy for Turner Motorsports this weekend in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS). Vickers made two previous starts this season with the Trent Owens-led team, notching a pair of top-10s at both Kansas Speedway and most recently a 10th-place finish in the Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
    • Vickers at Texas Motor Speedway – Vickers will make his fifth NNS start at the 1.5-mile TMS this weekend. It will be his fourth start in a Turner Motorsports entry. In four previous starts, Vickers owns a pair of top-10 finishes with 87 laps led. His average start is 10.8 and his average finish is 18.8. His last NNS start was in the No. 32 Dollar General Chevy in the fall of 2009 for Turner Motorsports.
    • Going (Near) Home – This weekend’s trip to Texas will be a homecoming of sorts for No. 32 team tire specialist Mason Jennings. Jennings hails from Edmond, OK which is just over three hours from TMS. A 1995 graduate of Edmond Memorial High School, Jennings also attended Oklahoma State University.
    • Fans Can Win Big with Dollar General Dollar General, an Official Partner of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup™, is offering customers the chance to win more than 9,000 prizes including free gas for a year, a trip for two to Las Vegas for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion’s Week™ and $250,000. The “Race in to Win” sweepstakes officially launched August 28 and runs through November 12, 2011. When customers purchase qualifying items from DG, they are given a code on their receipt to enter online at dollargeneral.com.  It is the first-ever national retail program around the Chase, NASCAR’s version of the playoffs.
    • Where it All Began – Turner Motorsports calls TMS their home track, winning their first championship at the track with Steve Turner’s youngest daughter, Kris, driving a Bandolero in 2004. The organization was headquartered in Hallettsville, Texas until making the move into NASCAR and to Mooresville, N.C. in 2009.Testing the NASCAR waters in 2009, the organization made their NCWTS debut at their home track. In 2010, the team went full-time NCWTS racing, fielding entries for Ricky Carmichael and Buescher. In late 2010, the organization made the announcement from the TMS media center that they had acquired Braun Racing and would run three NCWTS and four NNS entries in 2011.  That same weekend, Buescher grabbed Turner Motorsports’ first-ever pole award. In one year, Turner Motorsports has collected four poles, 12 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes in the NCWTS and notched three wins, 21 top-five and 60 top-10 finishes in Nationwide Series competition. Buescher is currently second in the NCWTS points battle, while Justin Allgaier and Jason Leffler are fifth and sixth, respectively, in the NNS point standings.
    • This Week’s Impala – This weekend, Vickers will pilot TMS-312 in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at TMS. This is the second race for the car, as it was the same Dollar General machine Vickers piloted to a 10th-place finish at Charlotte Motor Speedway three weeks ago.

Vickers on returning to Texas Motor Speedway for Turner Motorsports:

“I love coming back here twice a year. Great food and good people. I get to spend some time with some friends down here, so it’s just an enjoyable weekend. Maybe the third time will be the charm for me in the 32 car? Can’t thank Dollar General and Rick (Dreiling, Chairman and CEO) as well as Turner Motorsports for having me back. It would be nice to get a win for them as this is Mr. Turner’s backyard as well.”

O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway

No. 20 GameStop Toyota News, Notes & Paint Scheme:

    • LOGANO LOOKS TO STILL GET DRESSED UP, EVEN AFTER HALLOWEEN:  Joey Logano went to a few Halloween parties in the past week.  He dressed up as movie star/comedian Russell Brand at one of them.  At another, he was Lloyd Christmas, also known as half of the pairing from the movie Dumb and Dumber (the other half was roommate Coleman Pressley).  At Texas Motor Speedway, Logano will hope to dress up as a victorious cowboy.  That’s because the winner of any race at Texas is rewarded a cowboy hat in Victory Lane.  And Logano will be looking for his first Texas Motor Speedway cowboy hat this weekend as he returns to the seat of the No. 20 GameStop Toyota in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.   And Logano has been close before; last year, Logano finished second to teammate Kyle Busch in the spring race.  He also has three career fourth-place finishes at Texas , including earlier this season.  Along with his four-career top-five finishes, Logano has also recorded a pole at the 1.5-mile track.
    • BIGGEST GAME OF THE YEAR:  CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 3 :  What might be one of the biggest and most highly- anticipated games of the season will ride on the side of the No. 20 GameStop Toyota this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.  Modern Warfare is back. The best-selling first person action series of all-time returns with the epic sequel to multiple Game of the Year award winner, Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare 2. Prepare yourself for a cinematic thrill-ride as only Call of Duty can deliver. Engage enemy forces in New York, Paris, Berlin and other attack sites across the globe. Special Ops returns with a bevy of additions, including 16 new objective-based missions and the all-new Survival Mode. Team up online, locally, or play solo and face endless waves of attacking enemies throughout every multiplayer map.  Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare 3 hits store shelves November 8th and will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
    • FOLLOW GAMESTOP RACING ON TWITTER, FIND STUFF AT THE TRACK:  This weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, and next weekend at Phoenix International Raceway, fans who are in attendance at the track and follow GameStop Racing on Twitter (@GameStopRacing) will have the chance to find and win cool stuff, including hats, shirts and maybe even some video games.  The GameStop team will be doing an “at-track scavenger hunt” at Texas and Phoenix, giving out hints as to where different prizes are located around the facilities.  All it takes is being in attendance and also a follow on Twitter.  And anyone, from fans to team members to media members can get the free stuff…  just find it first.
    • BACK HOME AGAIN, IN INDIANA WE MEAN TEXAS:  Race weekend at Texas Motor Speedway always means a little more to Joey Logano and the No. 20 GameStop team.  That’s because TMS is the home track for the corporate offices of GameStop, long-time sponsor of the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing and Logano.  GameStop is headquartered in Grapevine, Texas , just a short drive from the racetrack. GameStop is the world’s largest video game and software entertainment retailer and has been a supporter of Logano and the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota since he made his debut at Dover International Speedway in 2008.
    • LOGANO FEELING GOOD ABOUT 1.5-MILE TRACKS:  Of Logano’s nine-career NASCAR Nationwide Series victories, six have come on tracks that equal 1.5-miles in length (seven if you count the 1.33-mile Nashville Superspeedway).  But this season, Logano and the No. 20 GameStop team have admittedly struggled on 1.5-mile tracks.  Logano pointed to the new NASCAR Nationwide Series car and the team just looking to continue to figure it out and make their cars as competitive as possible.  A couple of weeks ago at Charlotte, Logano and the JGR team made huge strides in their 1.5-mile program, qualifying third and running in the top-three all night long before getting involved in a late-race accident.  After the race, Logano indicated that it was the best car on a 1.5-mile track he’s had all season long.  And with two of the final three events on the schedule 1.5-mile tracks, Logano is feeling good.
    • CHASSIS:  The JGR team will bring chassis #136 to Texas for the race this weekend.  It will be the first race of the year for the chassis.  Chassis #132 will serve as the team’s backup.
    • STAT OF THE WEEK:  95.4. In the last 13 races at Texas Motor Speedway, Logano has found himself running in the top-15 for 95.4% of the laps he’s competed in.  That mark is higher than any other active driver during that span of races.
    • THE RACE:  The O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway ( Ft. Worth , TX ; 1.5-mile tri-oval) is set for Saturday afternoon, November 5, 2011.  The race will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 12:55 p.m. ET, with radio coverage on PRN starting at 12:30 p.m. ET.

    Joey Logano Quotes:

“Texas has always been a strong track for us, even though our record doesn’t show it. Our average finish position there is like an eighth, but it really should be even better than that.  We just missed winning a race there last season and we’ve finished fourth a bunch.  But we had better cars than those fourth-place runs were.  Pit strategy and other problems have kept us from a couple of wins at the track I think.  So going into the weekend, I know this is a place we should be able to run up front at.  And after our run at Charlotte, which is similar in size and shape to Texas, I feel even more confident.  I’m looking for a good weekend in Texas.

“It’s no secret that we’ve not been as strong on the 1.5-mile tracks this year as we have in the past.  But the entire Joe Gibbs Racing organization has been working hard at making our stuff better and we really showed it in Charlotte.  I thought we were one of the two or three best cars at Charlotte.  Unfortunately, we had another run in with a competitor that we’ve tangled with this year and that took us out of contention.  But our GameStop Toyota was fast at Charlotte and I think we will be just as good at Texas.  I know the guys were talking about Texas all weekend long in Charlotte and making sure everything we did there carried over to here.

“Texas is always important too because GameStop is just down the road and one of the things I really want to do is get them in Victory Lane right here at their home track.  We’ve been close, so getting that little bit more out of it and having all of the guests that they normally bring to the track get to celebrate would be huge.  We normally have a lot of executives come to this race, so we’ll ready to go. Plus, we are promoting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 this weekend, which is one of the biggest selling games of the year for GameStop. That would be a huge plus to get them in Victory Lane.  They just told me that the entire Call of Duty series of games have sold nearly 95 million copies since it started.  That is huge.  So to get this Call of Duty car into Victory Lane would get a lot of extra attention.”

  • WALLACE FAMILY ANNOUNCES PASSING OF PATRIARCH

CHARLOTTE, NC (October 31, 2011)–It is with great sorrow that the Wallace family announces the passing of its patriarch, Russell “Russ” William Wallace, Sr., on October 30, 2011 at Charlotte’s Carolinas Medical Center. He was 77 years of age.

Wallace, a determined auto racer, scored over 400 feature race victories on Midwestern short tracks in the 1960s and 1970s, making him one of the region’s most feared drivers of the time. He eventually spawned what has become one of racing’s most well-known families, including three winners in NASCAR’s National Series: Rusty, Mike and Kenny Wallace.

In February, 2011, Russ Wallace’s family became the first in NASCAR history to have produced four Daytona 500 competitors. When grandson Steve Wallace qualified for the February event, he broke a longtime tie with the Petty, Allison, Earnhardt and Bodine families.

Russ Wallace was born on August 2, 1934 in St. Louis, MO to the late William Russell Wallace and Marie George Wallace. He is survived by his wife Judy, sons, Rusty Wallace and wife Patti, Mike Wallace and wife Carla and Kenny Wallace and wife Kim.

He is also survived by brother Gary Wallace and wife Jane, as well as nine grandchildren: Greg, Katie, Lindsey Wallace Van Wingerden and husband Thomas, Brooke, Stephen, Chrissy, Brandy, Brittany and Matt. He was preceded in death by his grandson Michael Wallace, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Russ Wallace may be made online to the USO at: http://www.uso.org/wallace or to Victory Junction Gang Camp, 4500 Adam’s Way, Randleman, NC 27317.

The family will receive members of the racing community and other invited friends at Grace Covenant Church in Cornelius, NC on Monday, November 7, 2011, from 4-8 PM. The family will also receive friends on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 from 12-3 PM at Schrader’s Funeral Home in Ballwin, MO.

No. 33 Rheem Heating, Cooling & Water Heating Chevrolet Impala

NASCAR Nationwide Series Race 32 of 34 – Texas Motor Speedway

GONE TO TEXAS: Clint Bowyer and the No. 33 Rheem team head to the Lone Star State this week for the NASCAR Nationwide Series second visit of the season at Texas Motor Speedway. Bowyer has 10 starts in the series at the 1.5-mile track with two top-five and five top-10 finishes. In seven previous starts this season with the Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) team, the driver has collected three top-five and four top-10 results.

LOOKING FOR VICTORY LANE: KHI has 18 starts at Texas in the Nationwide Series with five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes. The organization’s record also includes 128 laps led, one pole with KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick in 2008 and a best finish of second in the 2009 spring race with NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart behind the wheel of the No. 33 Chevrolet.

CHASSIS HISTORY: For this weekend’s event at Texas, the No. 33 team chose chassis No. 071. The KHI team competed with this chassis 10 times thus far with a best finish of third twice (Harvick at Auto Club Speedway in March and Paul Menard at Texas Motor Speedway in April). Most recently, Menard drove this chassis to an eighth-place finish after starting from the pole at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Paul Menard joined the No. 33 KHI team for the final time this season for the Nationwide Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 14. THOUGHTS FROM THE DRIVER: CLINT BOWYER

“I’m looking forward to getting back in the Rheem Chevrolet this weekend at Texas, and I really want to get this No. 33 into victory lane before the end of the season. I’ve run decent at Texas but just haven’t had the finishes to really show for it. It’s always a fun place to go though and the racing is always great.”

THOUGHTS FROM THE DRIVER: Elliott Sadler

How do you feel heading into this week’s race at Texas?

“I’m pumped to go back to Texas. We had a great race there back in the spring with a top-five finish. With only three races left to go for the Nationwide Series championship, it’s now or never for us. We feel good about our team, about our car and about our plan to battle for this championship. Texas is a track that I’ve had success at in the past, including a win in the Cup Series back in 2004. I have a lot of confidence coming back here, especially after doing so well here in the past. Our team has done their part, so we just have to go out there and put all the pieces of the puzzle together. I’m looking forward to a great race as we try to get our best finish and gain the most points that we can.”

MOST POPULAR DRIVER: Sadler is eligible for the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Most Popular Driver award. Fans can vote for Sadler now through November 17 on www.NASCARNationwideSeries.com.

Rockingham Speedway Hosts Toyota Test Session

[media-credit name=”Rockingham Speedway” align=”alignright” width=”265″][/media-credit]Monday morning I was at home doing the usual housework when all of a sudden it hit me. Why am I in the house on such a beautiful day when I could be at ‘The Rock’? So I ditched the chores, hopped in my car and drove out to Rockingham Speedway.

I arrived around 2:30 pm and decided to check in at the office. One of the best parts of the day was the opportunity to spend a few minutes with Andy Hillenburg. His vision and perseverance combined to bring NASCAR back to this historic track.

After parking my car I walked to the grandstands, took my seat and joined the others who were there to watch the testing session. As I sat and watched, I couldn’t help but smile. ‘The Rock’ is an integral part of NASCAR history and a sense of awe immediately enveloped me.

While I was thinking about all that had come before, a father and son walked past me and caught my eye. I listened as the father patiently explained to his son what was happening.  The young boy gazed into his father’s eyes, determined not to miss a single word.

That’s when it dawned on me. Maybe I had been looking at this all wrong. Maybe it’s not the past that’s important but the new memories that this young boy and others like him will make when NASCAR returns to ‘The Rock’.

That reunion will take place when Rockingham Speedway hosts the Camping World Truck Series on April 15, 2012. Tickets are available for pre-order now at www.rockinghamspeedway.com.
Drivers who participated in the test session:

NASCAR Sprint Cup – Denny Hamlin
NASCAR Nationwide – Steve Wallace, Michael Annett, Darrell Wallace Jr.
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series – Kyle Busch, Brian Ickler, Timothy Peters, David Starr

Toyota NSCS Talladega Notes & Quotes – Kyle Busch

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&M’s Halloween Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Opening Statement: “On behalf of myself and Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM), it’s just a subtle little announcement that KBM is transitioning into the Nationwide Series next year to go race a full-funded team for the championship and I can’t announce any further details, besides that it will be a Toyota.  Excited about it.  It’s a great opportunity for myself and for the Kyle Busch Motorsports organization for everybody there that’s there now that we have on the line to hire to bring over in order to foresee that program being successful.  We’re excited.  It’s a great day for us.  Crew chiefs, sponsors, drivers — all that stuff will be announced at a later time.  Wanted to get it out there before Jayski, so we did it.  That was good.”

What do you enjoy about Talladega? “Talladega is fun.  It’s certainly got its own aspect of challenges.  I’m sure many drivers have led into the reasons of those, just with all the unknowns around this place, but it’s exciting.  It is certainly its own form of racing and its almost its own form of motorsports when you come to these places that we have with the drafting, as important as it is, and whether or not it’s a spread out draft with 43 cars in it or whether its tandem drafting, it’s certainly nothing else that you see that you see anywhere besides right here — Daytona and Talladega.”

Will Kyle Busch Motorsports continue to compete in the Truck Series? “I did say transitioning in.  We did run one race earlier this year, through help with NEMCO Motorsports, running Kimi Raikkonen at Charlotte, so we have the equipment started.  We will run trucks also.  We will keep the 18 truck going for a full season next year.  We are just a few races shy being full sponsorship on that deal.  Obviously, last week with Dollar General — announcing those guys coming back to help us with the Truck Series program and, you know, with the driver and all that kinds of stuff, it’s all pretty much done.  It’s just a matter of waiting until the time in which the sponsor is ready to announce all that stuff.”

Will the Kyle Busch Motorsports Nationwide team run for a driver’s or owner’s championship? “I don’t know.  It will be easy to go for an owner’s if I’m racing the car, but not very easy to go for a driver’s if I am racing the car.  I don’t know if I’m in it or not yet.”

Do you think it’s an issue for horsepower to be controlled by electronics in the future? “No.  For instance, if you came here with a crate engine from your manufacturer that Late Models run now — they put our 400, 420 horsepower or something like that — you would  still have the same effect that you do currently with a restrictor plate.  There’s going to be no throttle response.  You’re trying to push a car through 200 miles an hour worth of wind with only 400 horsepower.  It can only do so much.  I think restrictor plate racing is restrictor plate racing.  Whether you’re restricting it by putting a different engine in, because it’s got less horsepower, or restricting a 900 horsepower motor to 400 horsepower, it’s going to act the same way.”

How were your able to put this deal together when other teams are scaling back? “Obviously, it takes funding to do these deals and we wouldn’t be able to do it without the partner that we have acquired and with working with them and going through all the due diligence and getting everything put down on paper, certainly it’s been an exciting time.  We’ve been going through this process now for about four months, so we’re ready and excited that the opportunity has finally come that we can move up to the Nationwide Series.  We wanted to do that at Kyle Busch Motorsports now for a couple of years.  We actually wanted to have two truck teams out of there this year and we’ve kind of done that.  We’ve run part-time with a second team.  It’s been good, but this just kind of takes us to the next level and we’d like to make it a long-term partnership that it helps out over time with NASCAR and the series and making sure Kyle Busch Motorsports can stay going.”

When you arrive at a track do you know what to expect on race day? “This is definitely a place where you don’t have a notebook.  You don’t come here with marks around the racetrack written down where you want to lift, where you want to pick up the throttle — all that stuff.  For me, it’s like going to Martinsville.   I’ve got a notebook for going there and understand what it takes to get around there — Pocono, Charlotte, Indy, anywhere.   Daytona and Talladega, it just doesn’t happen.  It’s all circumstantial.  That’s all it boils down too.  And whether that’s luck or whether that’s putting you in the right position with the right people at the right time — its opportunity.  You’ve got to maximize all of that.  For us, it’s just a matter of coming in here with the best mindset, the best attitude we can to try to look forward to the race and what can transpire on Sunday to try to get ourselves a good finish.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&M’s Halloween Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing (continued) How much finesse does it take to manage your water temperature at Talladega? “It’s definitely challenging that you have to make sure to not overheat your engine.  You’ve got 500 miles to race here, so you’ve got to make sure you’re taking care of it for 495 miles of that.  It will last running hot in the last five miles — you’ll be fine with that, no problem.  You just have to make sure that throughout the midpoint of the race or any point of the race – – that until you get to that point that you’re not pushing any water.  The pop-off valve will alleviate the opportunity to run longer behind somebody.  We were successful at maintaining a decent water temp in Daytona — the (Joe) Gibbs (Racing) cars were.  You really do have to work hard at that.  You have to stay out from behind the guy in front of you to get enough air into the grill opening to make sure that you keep your temps down.  Other than that, will it change our cars much?   Probably not.  Will it change some other guys?  Yeah, they were running hotter than we were.  I think the Chevy guys for instance — they gave the okay to 270 or 275 degrees.  The Toyota guys — we only have the okay to 250 (degrees).  We kept it right around 245 or 250 much of the afternoon until the end and then we got it up to about 280.”

Do you think cutting back your Nationwide schedule has helped you in the Chase? “Does it help me or not?  It’s a point to argue at particular tracks.  It doesn’t matter at Daytona or Talladega and stuff like that.  Indy — I’ve never run well at Indy before.  We only run Cup cars there.  I would like to get in a Nationwide car there and work around some different points of interest if you will that might help me with my Cup car.  Where to lift, where to pick up the throttle — those kinds of things.  Some other places like Kansas for instance — we ran fifth, sixth, seventh much of the afternoon and finished 11th.  Charlotte, I ran both races and finished second in both races.  I don’t think it really hurts.   I don’t see the distraction there.  I see when you have a good car and you’re able to spend time with your crew chief, obviously that’s the most important thing is being able to talk to Dave (Rogers, crew chief).  The Nationwide stuff — I’ve skipped five minutes before or 10 minutes before if I’ve been debriefing with Dave.  It’s not an issue I think on Nationwide.   Going forward into the ownership role, my idea is to have a foundation of a company that will run off itself.  Rick Hendrick isn’t there every single day making sure the inner workings of Hendrick Motorsports work correctly.  He’s got the people in the right places to do that for him.  Joe (Gibbs, team owner), when he went off and went to football, we had J.D. (Gibbs, team president) and all those guys that help run the company.  That’s my idea with KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) just as well.  To have Rick Ren (general manager), to have our PR department, our marketing department and all that stuff just doing its own deal where it can survive without me there on a daily basis.”

Is it safe to assume you will drive Nationwide races for KBM and Joe Gibbs Racing next year? “It’s kind of the point to really announce later, but it’s safe to assume that I will be running in some Nationwide races at Kyle Busch Motorsports.  I will also still commit to my current obligations that I have at JGR (Joe Gibbs Racing) and run over there too.  I’ll be split between two Nationwide teams essentially driving some races.  What number that’s going to be yet, that’s to be decided.  Certainly we’ve gone over it with JGR and everything.  This is definitely nothing new to those guys.  There’s certainly the amount of races that I’ve already been set to run in the Nationwide car for next year with JGR.   We’ll still continue to plan all that out into these next few weeks or next few months maybe before our announcement.”

How does last weekend’s tragedy with Dan Wheldon affect you entering this race? “First off with that question I want to send my thoughts and prayers I have and our condolences — Samantha (Busch, wife) and I to the Wheldon family.  We don’t know what they’re going through — nobody does.  It’s certainly a tragic loss and can happen in any form of motorsports.  I think that it’s a matter — you say it a lot, but it’s a matter of circumstances that just don’t go your way.  It can happen in drag racing, it can happen in NASCAR, it can happen in Indy Car and it has happened.   It’s happened in Formula 1 and it’s inevitable.  Certainly we account for that and there is a danger aspect, there is a threat that something horrifying can happen.  For myself, how do I look at it?  I’m thankful that I have a wife that lets me do what I love to do.  It’s something that I do love to do and I don’t want to give up.  For these guys like Jeff (Gordon), Carl (Edwards), Jimmie (Johnson) — all these guys with families now, certainly it’s that much more challenging and that much more to think about.  I’ve got a couple more years probably before I get to that point.  Again, I don’t know that much will change the either.  It’s what we live with every day.  There’s the aspect too that you could be a kid playing in your front yard and you lose your ball and it rolls across the street and there a car comes.  There’s tragedy everywhere in this world and certainly it can be at a race track with a lot of hype built around it, but it could just as easily happen in your front yard.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&M’s Halloween Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing (continued) How did Denny Hamlin driving your truck at Martinsville come about? “I asked Denny (Hamlin) if he would race the truck for me at Martinsville and he asked me why I didn’t want to run it.  I just said, ‘Well, you’re better at Martinsville than I am and it would sure be nice to win there.’  I just let him drive it.  It was nothing special or anything.  It will alleviate me of having to run a race on the weekend and obviously just let me focus on the Cup car and keep our Chase chances alive, hopefully if we get out of here this weekend first.  Just planning ahead, that’s all.”
