Ford Kansas Friday Advance (Stenhouse Jr.)

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. enters Saturday’s Kansas Lottery 300 with a 22 point cushion over Elliott Sadler for the NASCAR Nationwide points title. Stenhouse spoke to media members at Kansas Speedway prior to the first NNS practice of the weekend.

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR EXPECTATIONS HERE AND MAYBE WHAT THIS TRACK MEANS TO YOU?  “I didn’t know that this is where we took over the points lead. That is cool. I like Kansas. We finished second in the ARCA race here and this was my first mile-and-a-half race track to race on in the ARCA series so that was a  good deal to get here and get one out of the way. We ran really strong here in the Nationwide race last year. We ran in the top-five and had a penalty and had to restart in the back. We worked our way back toward the front and restarted top-five on the last restart and ended up falling to sixth. This has been a good track for us. We did the tire test here so we have high expectations. It isn’t my favorite tire to bring here. It isn’t the one I wanted to bring here but it is the one that didn’t wear out. I corded the other ones that we were going to want to run here. You have to drive this one a little bit easier, which doesn’t play into my favor but hopefully I can figure it out pretty soon.”

PROBABLY THE MOST BIZARRE STORY THIS WEEK WAS REED SORENSON BEING BOUNCED OUT OF HIS RIDE. DO YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THAT?  “That was definitely a shock. When I first heard about it I thought it was maybe for next season. They I found out it was for this weekend. I feel like that is a big shock, especially being third in points. He won two Dash for Cash races and won the race at Road America and has ran really strong. I thought it was a shock but I guess really you don’t know everything that is going on over there within their organization. There are a lot of things that could add up to their decision but definitely a shock to me for sure.”

LAST YEAR JACK PULLED YOU ASIDE AND TOOK YOU OUT OF THE CAR AFTER YOUR SERIES OF CRASHES AND TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE HIS GUY. LOOK WHERE THAT HAS LED TO NOW.  “Yeah, it is tough when you get pulled out of a race car. From what it sounds like it is a different situation for Reed. When I got pulled out of the car it was a big shock when I got that news. You just have to keep plugging away and keep your head down and keep digging and do as much as you can to get either back in another race car or do whatever you need to do to keep your career going. It is going to be a pretty tough road for Reed and I am sure he was shocked more than anybody by it. He hasn’t had a bad season at all, so I think that is what is the biggest shock. When I got pulled out of the race car it wasn’t a huge shock to anybody. With his season the way it has gone I feel like it is a big shock for sure.”

IS YOUR REACTION TO THE NEWS SORT OF MIXED? IT ISN’T GOOD FOR THE SERIES BUT IT COULD BE GOOD FOR YOU IF HE DOESN’T HAVE A RIDE.  “You know, you don’t ever want to see anybody without a ride. You wouldn’t want to wish that on anybody. You don’t want to end up without a ride yourself. Right now I think the Elliott is our biggest title contender and we are battling it out pretty good right now but with Reed only 49 point back, I think in four races I was 31 back and went to the lead so anything can happen with five races left. Reed was very much in it for sure. It is good to see that he has a ride this weekend and hopefully keep some of those points that he would have lost not being here. It is tough when you have to start bouncing around to different teams. He was with a solid team there at Turner Motorsports and felt like he had a good shot. He was running consistent every week and I think that was going to keep him in it if we had a bad weekend and Elliott had a bad weekend. It is probably up to me and Elliott right now.”

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO KNOW THAT YOU HAVING A RIDE HAS JUST AS MUCH TO DO WITH HOW YOU REPRESENT A COMPANY AND DEAL WITH SPONSORS AS IT DOES HOW YOU PERFORM ON THE TRACK?  “It is a difficult situation. Coming from Sprint Cars you just raced. I raced for my dad and you race as hard as you could. Now coming over here to Roush Fenway you have companies you have to represent. We have Blackwell Angus Beef and Cargill and they are a huge privately owned company. You have to give them the right image on and off the race track and perform for them. The one good thing about being at Roush Fenway is that Jack does go a lot off of performance. I think that is a lucky situation that I am in right now. Jack believes in great race car drivers and figuring out sponsorship for them. Whatever he has to do he will do it. Obviously we have ran our cars unsponsored this year. I feel like I am in a different situation than a lot of people and that is just having a great car owner.”

I KNOW YOU GET HIT WITH A LOT OF DANICA QUESTIONS. AS POINTS LEADER, CAN YOU TALK ABOUT HER PROGRESSION THROUGH THIS SERIES AND HOW SHE HAS IMPROVED?  “I think she has improved a lot. Obviously going to race tracks and in these stock cars for the first time is difficult. She ran really well at Daytona and the mile-and-a-half’s. I think she will run really good here. I don’t think she has been here in a stock car. It takes getting used to but I think the short tracks are going to be her biggest challenge. She has what it takes to do it and I think she has gotten better and better every week. You watch her unload at Richmond to where she was in the race she ran a lot faster, better and more consistent. I think next year, once she starts racing every weekend, I think you will see a big progression from the beginning to the end of the season. It took me awhile to get going and I think that she should have a lot of time to get adjusted to it too.”

Crew chief Rick Viers on this weekend’s race:

“Kansas Speedway is another mile and a half track where we need to run better. We feel we have learned several things in the past two weeks, especially in the off-week, on the seven post and pull-down rig that will help our cars perform better. We hope that this helps us improve on our mile and a half program and leads us to a strong finish this weekend in Kansas City.”

    From the Cockpit:

Michael Annett on the race weekend:

    JR MOTORSPORTS TEAM PREVIEW

No. 88 Degree Men Chevrolet / No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet

    EVENT – Kansas Lottery 300 (200 laps / 300 miles)

TRACK – Kansas Speedway (1.5-mile oval)

    DATE – Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011

    TV / RADIO – ESPN2 (coverage begin at 3:30 p.m. EST) / MRN (broadcast begins at 3 p.m. EST)

Aric Almirola No. 88 Degree Men Chevrolet

“The racing surface at Kansas gets real slick. As the pavement gets older every year, it seems to get slicker and slicker. Grip is at a premium there. We’ll spend most of our practice trying to find the right amount of grip. The Degree Men team will work hard on that. It never really seems like you get it all, but it’s about who has more than the others.

“We’ll be racing a cool paint scheme with our Degree Men Chevrolet. It’s a good looking car, and I really like it. We ran this scheme at Bristol under the lights, and I’m anxious to see how it’s going to look racing in the daytime this week. JR Motorsports has had a lot of success with the Degree Men V12 logo on the hood of its racecars. I’m hoping for much of the same this weekend at Kansas.”

    Danica Patrick No. 7 GoDaddy.comChevrolet

“This will be another track for me to experience in a stock car. The good news is Tony (Eury) Jr. and the Go Daddy crew do a phenomenal job preparing our cars for the racetrack. It will take me a few laps to get up to speed but after that we’ll be competitive. I’m familiar with mile-and-a-half tracks and from what everyone says Kansas is very similar to Chicago, so I feel like we’ll be in good shape.

“I’m looking forward to next year. It’s very important that we end this year strong with our Go Daddy car. We certainly can do that. Personally, I think I’ve jumped a small hurdle in the process of being more accustomed to these tracks. By season’s end there will only be a handful of tracks that I haven’t raced on in a stockcar. That will be a big advantage for next year.”

    JR MOTORSPORTS NOTEBOOK –

NINE OF 12 FOR DANICA – Patrick will compete in her ninth Nationwide Series race of the season at Kansas Speedway. Her season totals include one top-five and three top-10 finishes. She has led 14 laps on the season and earned an average finish of 16.2. Patrick holds two top-finishes in her last four starts. She returns to NNS action for races at Texas Motor Speedway, Phoenix International Raceway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.

PATRICK AT KANSAS – Patrick will make her Kansas Speedway debut in the Nationwide Series this weekend. In the IndyCar Series Patrick holds six starts at the 1.5-mile facility, earning an average finish of 10.3.

JRM’S INTERMEDIATE PROGRAM – JR Motorsports owns four top-five and eight top-10 finishes in 1.5-mile races this season. Drivers Almirola, Kasey Kahne, Jamie McMurray, Patrick and Josh Wise have all contributed to the tally.

NEW LOOK CONTINUES FOR DEGREE MEN CHEVROLET – JRM’s flagship No. 88 Chevrolet will feature the Degree Men Adrenaline Series paint scheme for the second time this season. The Degree Men Adrenaline Series responds to increases in physical exertion, making it perfect for a hot afternoon of racing. The special paint features gold, black and silver colors with Degree Men logos on the quarter panels. Degree Men V12, part of the Adrenaline Series, will be featured on the hood of the No. 88.

ALMIROLA AT KANSAS – Almirola has four starts at Kansas Speedway across the Camping World Truck and Nationwide Series. His best showing came in a Billy Ballew-owned truck in 2010 when he finished seventh. Almirola holds two top-five and four top-10 finishes at 1.5-mile tracks this season with an average finish of 10.2 in those events.

NO. 88 SEASON STATS – The No. 88 team’s season tally now stands at seven top-five and 17 top-10 finishes, including 10 top-10s in the last 13 races. Almirola is currently ranked fourth in championship points, with the No. 88 Chevrolet eighth in owner points.

NO. 7 SEASON STATS – The No. 7 team holds six top-five and 12 top-10 finishes in 2011. The team occupies the 12th position in owner points. Every driver of the No. 7 this season has scored a top-10 finish. The list includes Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ron Fellows, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Jamie McMurray, Patrick and Josh Wise.

Vickers will also pilot the Dollar General Chevy in next weekend’s Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

  • Unique Companies Set To Sponsor Angela Cope at Kansas

Unique Companies Set To Sponsor Angela Cope at Kansas

Corporate Support Is New to NASCAR Circles; Ready For First Race With Angela

MOORESVILLE, NC, October 5, 2011 – To say that Angela Cope’s No. 23 Chevrolet will sport a variety of sponsorship partners this weekend at Kansas Speedway’s Nationwide Series race is an understatement, but what is even more interesting are the unique kinds of corporate support she is receiving, many new to the sport of NASCAR.

The categories are many and include a variety of partners, as Angela -a rookie in the Nationwide Series – will make her third start of the 2011 season. Her colorful car will not be short of logos, that is for sure.

The two primary sponsors this weekend (as well as the Charlotte Nationwide Series race the following week) include Millennium Spa/Salon Software, a leader in management software in the beauty industry, and BLK Beverages, a pure natural spring water infused with a proprietary blend of Fulvic Acid. It’s a new and one of a kind product in the beverage marketplace.

So, why would a software company get involved in NASCAR and with Angela Cope, niece of 1990 Daytona 500 Champion Derrike Cope and twin sister to Amber, also a noted driver?

“”I am excited about the opportunity to support Angela and Amber Cope as they race towards their dreams in the NASCAR Nationwide Series,” said Millennium Founder and CEO John Harms. “Not only are they professional race car drivers but they are beauty industry professionals that have used Millennium Software for years. The Cope Twins share the values, passion, and the drive that has consistently earned Millennium Software top honors in this amazing industry.”

In addition to the primary sponsors, Angela’s car will also have an array of distinctive associate partners on display on her car. That list is just as impressive and includes the likes of LuichinyR Boots, Matrix System Automotive Finishes, Horizon Sports Management, Xinergy Coal Mining, and OdysseyR Batteries by EnerSysR.

“It means so much to us that so many companies believe in us as we chase our dream to be successful race car drivers,” said Angela, who along with Amber, made history last October at Martinsville in NASCAR’s Camping World Truck race by becoming the first twins to ever race against each other in one of NASCAR’s top three divisions. Both also made history in May when both competed in the Nationwide Series race at Iowa.

“I am a rookie in the Nationwide Series so to have this variety of support is amazing. What makes it different, too, is that our partners are basically new to the sport so we are reaching areas that hadn’t been tapped into before. That makes us feel good that we are helping pave the way for new corporate support in our sport. Can’t wait to get to Kansas as well as Charlotte,” added the 28-year-old from Puyallup, Washington.

Angela finished 28th at Iowa, then showed improvement on that result at Loudon, NH, with a solid 25th-place effort. She just barely missed the race in Chicago.

Angela’s resume includes countless go-cart victories and multiple championships. Since moving east she has competed in super late models, ARCA, as well as the races in NASCAR’s Truck Series and Nationwide Series.

Two practices are set for Friday for the Kansas Lottery 300. Qualifying for the event is at 9:05 am Saturday, while the green flag is set later in the day at 3:30 p.m. EST.

Angela, along with Amber, will have an autograph signing after the race Saturday, at 7 p.m. at Danny’s Bar & Grill, located at 10940 Parallel Pkwy. Suite Q, in Kansas City, KS. The Cope Twins would like to thank Arthur Bryant’s, the legendary King of Ribs (http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com) located at 1702 Village West Parkway, K.C., for providing lunch at the track to the team and its sponsors.

. This week’s Impala… The Great Clips team will unload chassis TMS-127 this weekend at Kansas Speedway. This is the team’s “go-to” chassis as it has more seen more track time than any other car in rotation. Leffler has driven TMS-127 at Kentucky Speedway (13th), Michigan Int’l Speedway (10th), Dover Int’l Speedway (11th), Charlotte Motor Speedway (21st) and Darlington Raceway (9th), Atlanta Motor Speedway (9th) and Chicagoland Speedway (12th).

. Turner Motorsports in the hunt… In 29 Nationwide Series events in 2011, Turner Motorsports-prepared entries have notched three wins, 21 top-five and 57 top-10 finishes.

. Sporting Kansas City… In a first for the organization, Turner Motorsports will cross over into the world of Major League Soccer (MLS) this weekend. In 2011, the organization celebrated the opening of LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, a brand new, $200 million soccer-specific stadium, directly across the street from Kansas Speedway. Winners of the 2000 MLS Cup, the 2000 MLS Supporters’ Shield and the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Sporting Kansas City currently sits in first-place in the Eastern Conference and is one of only five MLS clubs to have won all three major domestic titles. . Happy 10-Year Anniversary, Great Clips… This season marks Great Clips’ 10-year anniversary as a primary sponsor in the NNS. Leffler on racing at Kansas Speedway

“Kansas is a lot of fun because it has multiple grooves that allow for a lot of passing and three-wide racing. I have always qualified pretty well there and had some strong runs but just haven’t had the finishes to show for it. We are looking to change that this weekend. I got the very first Cup pole at Kansas back in 2001 and I also have a Truck pole there. I’d really like to go for the sweep and grab the Nationwide Series pole this weekend. Our intermediate program has been solid this year so I feel pretty confident going into this weekend that we have a very good shot at being a contender for the win!”

No. 18 GameStop Toyota News, Notes & Paint Scheme:

. KANSAS IS THE NEW KENTUCKY???: Joey Logano is well known for his record at Kentucky Speedway. Prior to this season, Logano scored three-straight poles and three-straight victories at the 1.5-mile track. This year, a fuel mileage race ensued and Logano was left with 10th-place finish after having to go into gas conservation mode late. However, Kentucky isn’t the only track that Logano shows a fond liking to. In fact, now that his Kentucky streak is over, Logano might be able to start a new three-peat at Kansas Speedway. Logano has won the last two NASCAR Nationwide Series events at Kansas Speedway and will be looking to make it three-in-a-row this weekend in the Kansas Lottery 300. Logano won at Kansas in 2009 after starting from the seventh position and holding off a spirited charge from teammate Kyle Busch. Logano then backed it up last year, grabbing the pole and winning again, leading the final six laps after grabbing the lead once again from Busch.

. DARK KNIGHT RIDES ALONG IN KANSAS: GameStop returns as the primary sponsor of Joey Logano and the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota this weekend. And Batman: Arkham City will be the featured game on the side of the car this week. Batman: Arkham City builds upon the intense, atmospheric foundation of Batman: Arkham Asylum, sending players soaring into Arkham City, the new maximum security home for all of Gotham City’s thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds. Set inside the heavily fortified walls of a sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City, this highly anticipated sequel introduces a brand-new story that draws together a new all-star cast of classic characters and murderous villains from the Batman universe, as well as a vast range of new and enhanced gameplay features to deliver the ultimate experience as the Dark Knight. The game is set to release from Warner Brothers on October 18th and will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and PC.

. No. 18 TEAM STILL LEADING POINTS, GETTING TIGHT: Joey Logano will help the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota continue its quest for the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Owner’s Championship this weekend at Kansas Speedway. The last two weekends, the No. 60 Roush Fenway team has cut into the lead of the No. 18 Toyota, which now stands at 13 points with just five races remaining in the 2011 Nationwide Series season. Logano and the No. 18 team have an 81-point lead over the No. 6 team of Roush Fenway Racing, who sits in third. This season, the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota team has recorded seven wins, 16 top-five finishes and 22 top-10s. Drivers who have shared the ride this season include Kyle Busch (18 starts, two poles, seven wins, 16 top-10s), Michael McDowell (five starts, one pole, four top-10s), Kelly Bires (two starts, one top-10) and Drew Herring (one start, one top-10), along with two starts for Logano.

. A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK: Logano and the No. 18 Toyota ended the race last weekend strong. running the fastest lap times of anyone on the track for the last 30 circuits of the event. Unfortunately, the team was trapped a lap down and never got a caution to get the “lucky dog” and get back on the lead lap. The No. 18 team pitted for a scheduled stop while running in the top-10 under green-flag conditions late in the race and went two laps down in the process. However, before pit stops cycled through and all of the leaders came in for their stops, a caution came out, trapping Logano and the team two laps down. They were able to take the wave around and get one of their laps back, but the final 30-plus laps of the event went green with Logano running faster lap times than anyone else on the track.

. CHASSIS: The JGR team will bring chassis #117 to the track this weekend at Kansas. That particular chassis has been a long-time backup and will see its first race of the year as a primary. Chassis #132 will serve as the team’s backup car.

. STAT OF THE WEEK: 3.7, Two stats for Logano equal 3.7 at Kansas Speedway. First, Logano leads all active NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers in average finish at Kansas Speedway with a 3.7 (two wins, one ninth-place). Also, even though Logano has two wins at the track, he has led just 22 total laps or 3.7% of the laps he’s run at Kansas Speedway.

. THE RACE: The Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas Speedway (Kansas City, KS; 1.5-mile tri-oval) is set for Saturday, October 8, 2011. The race will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 3:30 p.m. ET, with radio coverage on MRN starting at 3:00 p.m. ET.

    Joey Logano Quotes:

“Everyone always talks to me about Kentucky and I love that track for obvious reasons, but I’ve been fortunate enough to have a lot of success at Kansas Speedway as well and I really enjoy going to that track and running there. Yeah, there are similarities between Kentucky and Kansas and that sure has helped over the years, but it doesn’t matter if you were to try and build two identical tracks in every sense of the word, there would still be differences between the two of them and you know those differences when you get to the track. I’ve always been really comfortable on the mile-and-a-half tracks and that has showed with my past performance. I think I have something like six wins on those style of tracks. And working with Joe Gibbs Racing doesn’t hurt. We’ve always been strong on the mile-and-a-halfs.

“We’ve had a couple of tough weeks the last two times out in the Nationwide car, so I’m ready to get back to the front and challenge for the win. We had something wrong with the car in Chicagoland that was beyond our control and last week at Dover, we were strong, especially there at the end but we got caught a couple of laps down by an ill-timed caution. There is nothing you can do about stuff like that. The best thing you can do it just bounce back and that is the plan this weekend in Kansas.

“I’m looking forward to wrapping up the season with GameStop. We’ve got five races left and all five will be with them. We haven’t been able to get them a win yet, but I feel pretty good it will happen at one of these five races before the season is out. Kansas, Charlotte, Texas, Phoenix and Homestead are all really good tracks for me and for JGR. And there is a lot of incentive to get GameStop a win before the year is out. I’m going for it these last five races, that’s for sure.”

  • The Slow Death of the Nationwide Series

The Slow Death of the Nationwide Series

There was an alarming sight while watching the Nationwide race on Saturday. It’s a sight that’s become all too familiar with the series and no one is at more fault than NASCAR and Joe Balash the Nationwide Series director.

[media-credit name=”nascar.com” align=”alignright” width=”255″][/media-credit]At first I thought I was the only one who noticed it. Then I heard someone say “Wow, there are 13 cars out already?”

I shook my head, looked at the cars and realized all the cars that were listed as “out,” were what the NASCAR world knows as “start and park” teams.

I then thought about the Nationwide Series from 2 years ago. Since Homestead 2009, the Nationwide Series has lost several full time teams, including: Baker-Curb Racing, Rensi Racing, Richard Childress Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, Phoenix Racing, Germain Racing, Specialty Racing, JTG- Daugherty Racing, K-Automotive Motorsports and Wayne Day Racing.

Several things have affected why most of these teams have left. One of the major reasons is the economy. Sponsorships have left the smaller organizations to go to bigger, powerful organizations in a minority role to get more recognition for a similar price. The economy is a good excuse but it’s only part of the problem.

One thing that hurt the series was NASCAR decided run the Nationwide Series new C.O.T. full time in 2011, forcing teams to spend a lot of money building new race cars. Many people felt this was a good idea for the series because in the long run it will cost less to make the cars. The C.O.T. is also a safer car as well and that is always a good thing.

But then NASCAR  got the brilliant idea that hurt many NASCAR Nationwide teams the most. They cut the purses by 20% effective for the 2011 season.

Huh? Teams have to build several new race cars, in a rough economy, and NASCAR cuts the purses? And that’s looking out for the “best interest of the sport.” NASCAR still makes money and yet they cut the purse?

And yet the so called “start and park” teams constantly get ripped apart for starting and parking. Maybe the teams are not the problem after all. Maybe the Rick Ware and the Curtis Key’s of the world are hanging on for dear life after a horrible call by the the Sanctioning Body.

Maybe NASCAR should put some more money back into the Nationwide Series.

I mean they are here for the best interest of the sport? Aren’t they?
