Roush Fenway Looks To Hold Point Leads In Kansas

Roush Fenway left the Monster Mile of Dover holding the points lead in the Nationwide Series and tied for the lead in the the Sprint Cup Series. The team will look to continue its strong performance this weekend in Kansas.

    Roush Fenway at Kansas

Roush Fenway has made 52 Sprint Cup starts at Kansas Speedway, winning three times and collecting 13 top-five and 24 top-10 finishes. Roush Fenway’s first win at the track came via the NNS series with Jeff Burton in 2002. It’s first Sprint Cup win at Kansas came in 2005 via Mark Martin. Greg Biffle is Roush Fenway’s most winning driver at Kansas, having won twice there in the Cup Series, including last fall. This year marks the first time that Kansas Speedway has hosted two Cup races in a single season.

    Roush Fenway Chase Report

After Dover, Roush Fenway moves into Kansas tied for first (Edwards) and sixth (Kenseth) in the point standings. The teams will look to make a serious charge at the 1.5-mile speedway, where Roush Fenway has won three times in Chase action, including Greg Biffle’s win last season.

    Roush Fenway in the Chase

Roush Fenway is no stranger to NASCAR’s Chase for the Cup, the organization has fielded at least two cars in each of its seven years of existence. In 2005, Roush Fenway occupied half of the 10-car field and in 2004 the organization won the inaugural Chase. In addition, Roush Fenway has placed more cars in the Chase field (22) than any other racing organization.

    Leading the Way

Roush Fenway has led a total of 1,296 laps in NASCAR action at Kansas, including 751 laps in Cup action and 316 laps in the Nationwide Series.

    Kansas Chase Moments

There have been quite a few Chase highlights for Roush Fenway at Kansas. Mark Martin and th No. 6 team took two tires and never looked back, leading 137 laps en route to the team’s win there in 2005. Greg Biffle came back and took the checkered flag in 2007, but the most memorable Chase moment for Roush Fenway at Kansas, may have come in 2008 when Carl Edwards attempted a last turn, off the wall pass for the race win. Despite the fact Edwards gutsy move failed to notch him the victory, Edwards still finished second, leading four Roush Fenway cars in the top eight of the race.

    No. 20 Notes of Interest

-Truex is riding a wave of momentum in the NASCAR Nationwide Series with Joe Gibbs Racing; his top-10 at Dover, combined with a top-5 at Richmond and strong showings at Chicago and Atlanta make four consecutive top-15 finishes in just as many starts for JGR. He’s also received the Sunoco Rookie of the Race Award for all four races.

-Saturday marks Truex’s 2nd start at Kansas Speedway in a NASCAR Nationwide Series car, and his 15th start in the Nationwide Series in 2011. He finished in the top-15 at his only other start at Kansas last year in a Toyota Camry for Pastrana-Waltrip Racing.

-He is teamed up with veteran crew chief Adam Stevens this weekend; with whom he’s posted a 4th and an 11th place finish in their two other starts together at Atlanta and Richmond, respectively.

-Truex is also scheduled to drive for JGR at Phoenix International Raceway on Nov. 13.

Ryan Truex on the Momentum of Strong Finishes

I’m going in with the same mindset as the past four races. Hopefully we’ve gotten all the bad luck out of the way. We have been very fast off the truck every weekend and I’m sure this will be no different.”

Truex on Returning to Kansas Speedway

“I’ve been there in the old car last year so it won’t be my first time there. From what I can remember, it is a bumpy track so we will need to make sure our car handle the bumps well in order to be fast.

Crew Chief Adam Stevens on Truex’s Performance

“Ryan has done a great job in his four races so far at JGR. I have been really impressed with his ability to finish strong and bring the car back in one piece. We had a great time working with him at Atlanta and Richmond. Kansas will be a slightly different challenge; it will be more similar to Chicago. Ryan had a decent run there. We plan on using some if the No. 11 team’s Chicago notes and going from there. We are on a different left side tire than the (Sprint) Cup cars this weekend so that will be interesting.”

Former Turner Motorsports driver Brian Vickers to join driver line-up

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (October 4, 2011) -Turner Motorsports announced today that Brian Vickers will assume driving duties of the No. 32 Dollar General Chevy, beginning this weekend at Kansas Speedway. Vickers, the 2003 NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion, who has a long-standing relationship with the team, will also get behind the wheel for the Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The driver for the remaining 2011 races will be announced at a later date.

“We are continuing to evaluate our racing program as we look to the 2012 season,” said team owner Steve Turner. “Brian Vickers is a proven winner at NASCAR’s highest level in addition to being a driver at Turner Motorsports over the last four seasons. He has worked with Trent Owens in the past which will allow us to immediately focus on the task at hand. I am looking forward to driving this new Nationwide Series car with Trent and the guys behind me!”

The No. 32 team remains under the leadership of Trent Owens, the same crew chief Vickers worked with during the majority of his time at Turner Motorsports.

FROM THE DODGE ENGINEER:  HOWARD COMSTOCK “Get ready, here they come.  Love them or hate them, four of the last seven Chase races are at 1.5-mile tracks.  We start the string this weekend at Kansas.  But don’t believe it when you hear that all mile-and-a-half tracks are the same.  They’re not.  The four 1.5-mile tracks that teams face in the Chase have different bank angles in the turns, different radii in the turns, different doglegs on each front stretch and different straightaway lengths.  We run different top speeds at each, run different average speeds at each and lose different amounts of time per lap as tires wear at each. Other than those factors, they are all 1.5-miles in length; maybe that’s what people say make them all the same.”

DODGE QUOTES: ON RACING AT KANSAS “I don’t know what it is about the Kansas track.  The year that I won the championship, I finished sixth and that had been the highlight so far.  It’s a flat mile-and-a-half that reminds me of Las Vegas when it was built and flat.  It’s just a tough combination.  If you’re just a tick off, you feel like you play catch-up most of the weekend and if you unload fast, you’re tough to chase down.” Kurt Busch, No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Dodge Charger R/T

“This is a sister car to our ‘758’ that we won Dover with last weekend.  Since the last time out, we’ve gone back and completely redone this car with our latest stuff.  It’ll be a good car for Kansas and we can’t wait to get back out there.  We’re heading in there with the attitude that we have some unfinished business to take care of this time around.”

Steve Addington, crew chief, No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Dodge Charger R/T

“Wow.  So much has happened this year since we won at Kansas, but I don’t want the significance of that win lost in the fact that we won two more races and made the Chase.  That win at Kansas was special because we knew we were doing the right things to be successful, but just didn’t get the luck needed to win.  Winning at Kansas was a validation, of sorts, and it was definitely the catalyst for what we were able to accomplish as the summer months wore on.  We won the race on fuel mileage, but we had a very fast car throughout the race.  We ran in the top-10 most of the day.  With a fast Miller Lite Dodge and good fuel mileage, I’m confident about our chances this weekend.”

Brad Keselowski, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger R/T

“Even though we were able to get the win in June from the 25th position, we really want to qualify better this weekend at Kansas.  Track position and clean air are key at that track.  Once we got Brad out in front, it was like it was a completely different Miller Lite Dodge.  Not only were we able to pick up the win the last time we were there, we also learned a lot about our car.  We’ve seen improvement each time we have gone back to a track for the second time and I expect the same thing this weekend.  The Chase battle is getting tight so we want to come out of here with a good finish.” Paul Wolfe, crew chief, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger R/T

They cut the sides off this car on Monday and applied some things they learned in the wind tunnel, so we feel pretty confident that we’ll have a better package this time out. I enjoy racing at Kansas Speedway, and heading there knowing that we’ve made some gains really gives us something to look forward to.” – Steve Wallace on racing at Kansas Speedway

CHINA GROVE, N.C.(October 4, 2011) – When the NASCAR Nationwide Series activities begin this weekend at the 1.5-mile oval of Kansas Speedway, Robert Richardson, Jr. will be back in the seat of the No. 23 North Texas Pipe Chevrolet.

The family-owned team of R3 Motorsports has entered and made every race this year. This has allowed them to remain solidly locked into the Owner’s Points so they can concentrate more on their race set-ups to maximize their performance in Saturday’s race.

The 29-year old native of McKinney, Texas has some experience under his belt at the Midwestern track to aid in the young team’s quest for speed and handling. Richardson used the recent off-week to take an extensive tour of Colorado and New Mexico utilizing his minor in photography from Southern Methodist University to take some great photos available for viewing on his Facebook page.

Fast Facts:This will be Richardson’s 20th start of the 2011 season and 89th of his NNS career. Throughout this year, he’s completed 2,946 of 3,740 laps contested and led one lap, at Talladega. His best finish took place at Richmond in May where he was 20th.

Track Facts: This will be the fourth start at Kansas Speedway for Richardson. In the previous three, he’s achieved a best start of 31st and finish of 22nd, both taking place in the 2009 event. As far as consistency, he’s completed 99 percent of the laps (594 of 600) of competition. In this race last year, he started 42nd and went on to finish in 31st place.

Tune in for the Win:A fairly normal schedule awaits the Nationwide Series drivers this weekend in Kansas. Their first practice takes place from 2:10 p.m. (ET) to 3:15 p.m., which is then followed by the final practice from 3:45 to 5 p.m.; both of which will be seen live on ESPN2. Next! The NASCAR series return home for the following week when they race under the lights of Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday evening.

Robert Richardson, Jr. Quotes: “This is one of those 1.5-mile tracks on our schedule that is pretty much like the others, when it comes to the layout. But, don’t get me wrong, this track has its own personality and quirks just like the others do, too.

“We need to get ourselves dialed in real good in the first practice so we know what we have to deal with during the race. If we start to get in some of those long, green-flag runs like we have been lately, then we need to know what to expect.

“Qualifying will get worked on some, too, because you really want to get a good starting spot at a place like Kansas. The more positions you can put behind you before the green flag flies, the better.

“Kansas is a great area and the fans get into us being there every year. The cooler temperatures now will help us some in the car, but also in how the tires could wear differently  than they do in the summer time.”

Stenhouse, Jr. on racing at Kansas Speedway:   “I’m really looking forward to Kansas. We got to do the Goodyear tire test there earlier this year, which will hopefully benefit us.  Last year, that was one of the good races we really had heading down the homestretch.  We ran in the top five and we got a penalty and had to go to the back and drove our way back up to the front.  We restarted third and on the last restart I got trapped on the bottom and finished sixth, but had a really fast race car and ran really well, so I’m looking forward to getting back there.”

Crew chief Mike Kelley on racing at Kansas Speedway:   “We have had a lot of success on mile-and-a-half tracks this season. Kansas is track that suits Ricky’s driving style. I am confident that we will have a strong performance here but we also have to think championship picture and make sure we stay up front and out of trouble to gain the maximum points.”

    QUOTES

Carl Edwards on racing at Kansas Speedway:

“I absolutely love Kansas Speedway.  It’s not far from my hometown and I will have several of my family and friends there.  It’s a track I really want to win at.  Our Fastenal team has been on a roll and we are coming off a strong win at Dover.  I love the mile and a half speedways.  Kansas Speedway is exactly what this Fastenal team needs for the owners points.  We have five races left and we want to gain as many points as possible and make it count.  These last races are at very good tracks and we will make it exciting for the fans!”

Crew chief Mike Beam on racing at Kansas Speedway:

“We are coming off a dominating win at Dover so we are going to carry that momentum to Kansas. Our mile-and-a-half program has been superb this year. Our goal is to stay up front, have fast pit-stops and get this No. 60 Fastenal Ford back to victory lane for the eighth time this season.”

No. 30 Sporting Kansas City Chevrolet News and Notes

    • Sporting Kansas City… In a first for the organization, Turner Motorsports will cross over into the world of Major League Soccer (MLS) this weekend. The team will welcome Sporting Kansas City to the hood of James Buescher’s No. 30 Chevrolet Impala at Kansas Speedway. Sporting Kansas City is currently in their 16th year as a MLS club. In 2011, the organization celebrated the opening of LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, a brand new, $200 million soccer-specific stadium, directly across the street from Kansas Speedway. Winners of the 2000 MLS Cup, the 2000 MLS Supporters’ Shield and the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Sporting Kansas City currently sits in first-place in the Eastern Conference and is one of only five MLS clubs to have won all three major domestic titles.
    • Practicing with the team… Before representing Sporting Kansas City on the track, Buescher will get the chance to train with the team at their state-of-the-art practice facility (Sporting Club Training Facility at 6310 Lewis Road, KCMO, 64130). He will have the opportunity meet the players and workout with the team on Thursday, October 6th at 11:30 a.m. CT. The session will be open to any media members who may want to see the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) championship contender trade in his driving shoes for a pair of cleats and try his hand at a very different professional sport.
    • Role swap… After they get a chance to see what Buescher has got on the soccer field, several members of the Sporting Kansas City soccer club will have the opportunity to see what he has on the track. A group of players and executive staff members will attend the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race as guests of Turner Motorsports. They will experience what race day is like for the young driver and will view the race from atop the No. 30 pit box.
    • NCWTS notes… Buescher is having a career-year in his full-time pursuit for the NCWTS championship. The 21-year-old has collected nine top-five and 17 top-10 finishes, finishing outside the top-10 on only two occasions. He captured one pole award and led 190 laps. He is currently second in the championship point standings, just three points behind leader Austin Dillon with five races left on the schedule.
    • Kansas Speedway: by the numbers… Buescher has three NCWTS starts and one NNS start at the 1.5-mile oval. In his three NCWTS starts, he captured his best finish of fourth in the Truck Series June stop at the track. He made his one NNS start at the track in October 2010, finishing 35th after qualifying in the ninth spot.
    • This week’s Impala… The No. 30 team will hit the track with chassis TMS-113 this weekend at Kansas Speedway. This is the same chassis that Buescher raced to a runner-up finish at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis (LORI). TMS-113 has also seen track time at Phoenix International Raceway (Ryan Newman St. 6, Fn. 4), Bristol Motor Speedway (Kasey Kahne St. 9, Fn. 2), Richmond International Raceway (Buescher St. 36, Fn. 22) and Iowa Speedway (Mikey Kile St. 15, Fn. 19).
    • NNS this season… Buescher has made seven NNS starts this season, capturing one top-five and three top-10 finishes. He brought home his career-best finish of second at LORI in July.
    • Buescher’s Blog… Each week Buescher is in the No. 30 Impala he writes a blog on TheHotLap.com previewing the upcoming Nationwide race and following the race recapping the weekend’s event. You can read his preview blog on Thursday before the race and his recap on Tuesday following the event.
    • Turner Motorsports: In the hunt… In 29 Nationwide Series events in 2011, Turner Motorsports-prepared entries have notched three wins, 21 top-five and 57 top-10 finishes. All three of Turner Motorsports’ championship-contending drivers are inside the top-six in the driver point standings with Reed Sorenson in third, Justin Allgaier in fifth and Jason Leffler in sixth.

Buescher on Turner Motorsports partnership with Sporting Kansas City

“I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Sporting Kansas City. It’s cool to get the chance to work out with the team, I just hope I can keep up! It will be a great experience to see how other athletes prepare and then get the chance to show them around the garage and the pits. Racing is so different from other sports, so it’s interesting to be able to compare the two worlds. I really want to thank Steve [Turner] and Sporting Kansas City for putting this weekend together. Hopefully we’ll be able to put on a great show!”

No. 2 OneMain Financial Chevrolet Impala

NASCAR Nationwide Series Race 30 of 34 – Kansas Speedway

KANSAS CITY RACING: Elliott Sadler and the No. 2 OneMain Financial team will head to Kansas Speedway this weekend for the first NASCAR Nationwide Series event at the Kansas City, Mo., track this season. Sadler has only competed at the track once in the Nationwide Series back in 2005 where he started 18th and was relegated to a 42nd-place finish after an accident on lap five.

EXPERIENCE IN KC: Sadler has also made 10 starts at the 1.5-mile track in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. He collected one top-five and three top-10 finishes with a best finish of fourth in 2004.

MAKE IT TEN: In the Nationwide Series, KHI has nine starts at Kansas. With fourth-place results, KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick (2010 and 2009) and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Tony Stewart (2006) share the record for the organization’s best finish at the 1.5-mile Kansas City, Kan., facility. Harvick scored KHI its one pole at the track in 2008.

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 2 OneMain Financial team will use chassis No. 070 this weekend in Kansas. This is the eighth time this season the No.2 team will compete with this particular chassis. The team has earned four top-five finishes with No. 070 thus far this season with a best finish of third at Darlington Raceway in May and Iowa Speedway in August.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: After starting from the pole for the fourth time this season, Sadler and the No. 2 OneMain Financial Chevrolet raced among the top 15 for the majority of the day before an untimely caution put the KHI team one lap down and left the team to finish 14th in the OneMain Financial 200 at Dover International Speedway.

TO THE POINT: Sadler remains in the second position in the Nationwide Series Driver’s Point standings. With five races remaining in the season, the driver sits 22 points out of the lead.

MEET ELLIOTT SADLER: Fans will have the opportunity to meet Sadler at the OneMain Financial Branch at 1154 West 103rd St. in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 7. From 4:30-5:30 p.m. Sadler will meet with fans, sign autographs and take photos.

THOUGHTS FROM THE DRIVER: Elliott Sadler

How do you feel heading into this week’s race at Kansas?

“Kansas Speedway is a very slick 1.5-mile race track. It is one of the slickest race tracks that we will compete on all season long. It’s another 1.5-mile track that I am fond of, and it seems to be a strong area for our team. Kansas is another track that we feel like we can go to and be very competitive. Track position is very important there as it is very hard to pass. We race in the middle of the day, which is going to make it nice and slick. I feel good about this weekend, and I know we will go and perform to the best of our ability.”

MOST POPULAR DRIVER: Plenty of time remains to vote for Sadler for the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Most Popular Driver award. Fans can vote for Sadler now through November 17 on www.NASCARNationwideSeries.com.
