DODGE QUOTES: “I don’t think Dover gets the recognition that it deserves. It’s a nasty racetrack and I mean that in a good way. Very few tracks are as physically demanding as Dover. It’s hard on both the drivers and the equipment. At no point during the race can you just log laps because, if you aren’t racing another driver, you are making sure that you keep your car out of the wall. For that reason, Dover is one of my favorite tracks. I was able to win there last year and we are running well enough that we can win this week, too.” Brad Keselowski – No. 22 Ruby Tuesday Dodge

FROM THE CREW CHIEF: “Dover is another very tough racetrack where you have to race the track first and the other competitors second. Track position is important, so you have to place more of an emphasis on qualifying. This is one of Brad’s favorite tracks and we would like to tame the ‘Monster Mile’ this weekend.” Todd Gordon, crew chief, No. 22 Ruby Tuesday Dodge Challenger R/T

    TOYOTA NASCAR NOTES & QUOTES

Week of September 26 – October 2, 2011 TOYOTA TIDBITS

LOUDON LOOK BACK:  In Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS), Brian Vickers (fifth) recorded his sixth top-10 result of the season in another race that came down to fuel mileage strategy.  On Saturday,  Kyle Busch earned his 30th career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) win, and his third straight victory at the one-mile race track.

CHASE RACE TWO:  Sunday’s NSCS race at NHMS marked the second of 10 playoff races in the 2011 Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.  Camry drivers Busch and Denny Hamlin are both competing in this year’s Chase.  Busch fought a tight race car most of last Sunday, but was able to secure an 11th-place finish and move up to sixth-place in the NSCS point standings.  Hamlin was running in the top-10 with five laps remaining when his Camry ran out of gas and he was forced to pit.   A 29th-place result leaves Hamlin 12th in the point standings.

DOVER TAKE TWO:  Toyota driver Buschhas two victories in his NSCS career at Delaware’s Dover International Speedway.  In May 2008, he led 158 laps (of 400) in his Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) No. 18 Camry to take his first ‘Monster Mile’ victory.  The Las Vegas-native visited victory lane again in May 2010, this time leading 131 laps (of 400).  Camry drivers also have two pole positions at Dover — David Reutimann (June 2009) and Martin Truex Jr. (May 2010).

MARTIN AT ‘MONSTER MILE’:  Mayetta, N.J. native Truex, driver of the No. 56 NAPA Camry, earned his first career NSCS win in the spring of 2007 at Dover — leading 216 laps (of 400) en route to victory lane.   In 11 starts at Dover, Truex has recorded one win, four top-10 finishes and one pole (May 2010).  Truex also has two NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) victories at the one-mile concrete oval — in Sept. 2004 and June 2005.  Since joining Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) last year, Truex won the NSCS Sprint All-Star Shootout race and has 14 top-10 finishes, including seven so far in 2011.

SCORE FOUR:  Camry drivers have visited victory lane at Dover four times in nine NNS races at the one-mile concrete oval.   Buschhas three NNS wins in a Camry at Dover — Sept. 2008, May 2010 and Sept. 2010.  Hamlinwon the May 2008 race in a Toyota and also won the Sept. 2007 event.  Camry drivers also have five poles at Dover — three by Busch (Sept. 2008, Sept. 2009 and May 2010) and two by Joey Logano (May 2009 and Sept. 2010).

TUNDRAS TAKE TROPHIES:  Tundra drivers have won four of the last five NCWTS races at Kentucky Speedway, and two Toyota winners have gone on to capture the year-end NCWTS title.  Todd Bodine won at Kentucky in 2010 and went on to win the championship that year, and Johnny Benson did the same in 2008.  In 2007, Mike Skinner won the Kentucky event in a Tundra.  Busch visited victory lane at Kentucky Speedway in the most recent running in July.  Busch started eighth and led twice for 61 laps (of 152).  Tundra drivers Brendan Gaughan (third) and Bodine (fourth) also earned top-five finishes in July.

PETERS PREPARED:  Competing for a championship in his third full season in the NCWTS, and third year in a Tundra, Timothy Petersreturns to Kentucky Speedway with two top-10 finishes in his last three races at the 1.5-mile track.  Peters guided his Tundra to a fourth-place showing in 2009 and finished sixth last year.  Peters currently sits fourth in the driver championship point standings, 25 behind leader Austin Dillon with six races remaining this season.

EAST SERIES ENDING: The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (NKNPSE) will end the 2011 season this Friday at Dover.   Five Toyota drivers have won the first 10 races of the season and the top-six positions in the points are held by Camry drivers. JGR development driver Max Gresham leads the standings with two wins followed by MWR development driver Brett Moffitt (second) and Revolution Racing driver Darrell Wallace Jr. (third).

NOTES, QUOTES & NUMBERS NASCARSprintCupSeries(NSCS): Since the start of the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for five victories, 30 top-five results, 58 top-10 finishes and have led 2,134 laps … After 28 races, Kyle Busch is sixth in the series points standings following the second race in the Chase and Denny Hamlin is in 12th-place … The Martin Truex Jr. Foundation (MTJF) will host the fourth annual MTJF Golf Tournament presented by NAPA Auto Parts at Sea Oaks Country Club in Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J., on Thursday … Truex will also host the second annual MTJF fan event at the Holiday Inn in Manahawkin, N.J. on Wednesday … For more information visit www.martintruexjrfoundation.com … MWR’s Ty Norris, who holds the title of vice president and general manager with the team, grew up in Smyrna, Del., and graduated Delaware State University … MWR co-owner Rob Kauffman will race in the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta this weekend.

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Do you need to take chances to win races in the Chase? “I think we’re going to play it out as we have all year.  We haven’t changed anything.  We’re just going out there to do the best we can to run the hardest we can, the smartest we can and let the results take care of themselves.  If we finish enough times in the top-five or the top-10, or win a couple, then the results will take care of themselves.   For us, we’re not pressured.   We’re 20 points back or whatever it is and there’s another guy that’s right in front of us that’s the same amount back.  We just have to know that there’s still eight more weeks and there’s still a lot more miles left in racing.”

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing What is it like for a driver during the closing laps of a fuel mileage race? “First, you look at your surroundings and try to figure out who’s behind you, who’s in front of you, who’s coming, who’s going — and you’re constantly thinking about the risk versus reward.  If there’s no chance of anyone in front of or behind you catching you, then you go into even more conservative mode late in the race — three, four, five laps to go.  You start clutching it more, you start shutting the car off more and things like that.  It’s a complete different ball game.  It’s not racing by any means.  It’s just a strategy move and it’s how guys are getting good finishes nowadays.”

BRIAN VICKERS,No. 83 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team? Are you looking forward to racing at Dover? “I like Dover.  We had a good car there last time and a good run.  Hopefully, we can back it up.   It’s the Monster Mile — it’s fast, it’s fun.  Everything happens so quick there, so you really have to be on your toes.”

NASCARNationwideSeries(NNS):  During the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for 10 wins, 33 top-five results, 73 top-10 finishes and have led 1,578 laps … Kenny Wallace (seventh) is the top Toyota driver in the NNS point standings … Steve Wallace (eighth), Brian Scott (ninth) and Michael Annett (10th) are also in the top-10 … Annett will make his 100th career NNS start this weekend at Dover … Scott recorded his first career NASCAR victory in the 2009 NCWTS race  … K. Wallace has made more Dover starts (30) than any other driver and has nine top-10 finishes, including a seventh-place in May … Mayetta, N.J. native Ryan Truex will drive his fourth race in the JGR No. 20 Camry this weekend at Dover.

BRIAN SCOTT, No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Do you enjoy racing at Dover? “I was fortunate enough, and good enough , to get a Truck win at Dover.   I really love that race track.  To come off a third- place finish at Chicagoland and go to another track I like — I’m looking forward to it.  This team, we have good enough notes from the first Dover race, so we’ll go back and we’ll be better and we’ll have a good run there.”

MICHAEL ANNETT,No. 62 Pilot Flying J Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing What are your goals for the remainder of the season? “The off-week was great for us to get a good mindset for these final races in 2011, but I’m really excited to get back to the race track this weekend.  We’ve only got six races left in the season, and we’ve really got a chance to prove ourselves in these final events.  I’m really excited to give back to Pilot Flying J both on and off the race track in the coming weeks.”

NASCARCampingWorldTruckSeries(NCWTS):  Since the start of the 2011 NCWTS season, Tundra drivers have registered nine wins, 30 top-five results, 57 top-10 finishes and have led 1,000 laps … After 19 races, Timothy Peters (fourth) is the top Toyota driver in the NCWTS points standings … Tundra drivers Todd Bodine (10th), David Starr (11th), Brendan Gaughan (13th) and Miguel Paludo (14th) are also in the top-15 in the points … Former NCWTS driver Terry Cook serves as director of competition at Red Horse Racing … Cook is a native of Sylvania, Ohio, and competed in the NCWTS for 14 years and has six series victories … Germain Racing was established in 2004 by Germain brothers Bob, Steve and Rick … The Germain family has been affiliated with Toyota for over 40 years as Germain Motor Company based in Columbus, Ohio … Brian Ickler will be behind the wheel of the No. 18 Tundra at Kentucky.

TODD BODINE, No. 30 Valvoline Toyota Tundra, Germain Racing Are you looking forward to racing at Kentucky this weekend? “Kentucky is a perfect track for our team to race this weekend.  We’ve had some struggles, but we’ve definitely seen some progress and Kentucky is a great track for us to really get the chance to see what we’ve learned and have a good weekend.   The track is a good track for me, personally, and it’s been a great track for the team.  I think it holds a special place for our team because two of our sponsors, Valvoline and Georgia Boot, are both located near the track.”

BRENDAN GAUGHAN, No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Toyota Tundra, Germain Racing How do you approach racing at Kentucky after competing there earlier this year? “Normally that’s a great thing — you take the notebook, you have a lot of stuff.  We’re still hunting and pecking pretty big trying to find a balance that I like.  I don’t know what we’re going to go back there with yet, but we’re probably going to take the truck we raced at Chicagoland.  That truck seems to be our 1.5-mile truck that we seem to like the most.  It seems to have the most down force for me that I like.  I think this is what we’ll stick with and try to keep on improving in little bits.”

    No. 88 Ragu Chevrolet No. 7 GoDaddy.com/Get Together/Get Online.ORG Chevrolet

    EVENT – OneMain Financial 200 (200 laps / 200 miles)

TRACK – Dover International Speedway (1-mile concrete oval)

    DATE – Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011

    TV / RADIO – ESPN2 (coverage begin at 3:30 p.m. EST) / MRN (broadcast begins at 3 p.m. EST)

Aric Almirola No. 88 Ragu Chevrolet

“The spring race at Dover was all about survival for our Ragu team. There were a lot of wrecks. We were fortunate to miss most of them until the very end when we got caught up in one coming to the white flag. But we still managed to sneak out of there with a good finish.

“We’ve been running well on concrete tracks so far. I think we have a top-10 at every concrete track this year. We’re looking forward to going back to Dover. I feel like we’ve learned a lot from the first race there to now and we’ll go back with something very different than what we had in the spring. I feel like we’ll be a lot more competitive.”

    Jamie McMurray No. 7 GoDaddy.com/Get Together/Get Online.ORG Chevrolet

“Dover is one of the most challenging tracks on the circuit. But I like seeing it on the schedule. I finished third with “Pops” (Eury) and the 88 guys last year. So heading there with the Go Daddy Chevy, we know we’ll be competitive. Tony (Eury) Jr. and the entire Go Daddy crew have put together even more notes over the past couple of weekends, and we’ve made some gains. Getting your car handling well on corner entry is very important. You drop off into the corners so quickly that if you don’t have the proper balance, it makes for a long day.”

    JR MOTORSPORTS NOTEBOOK –

CONCRETE CONSISTENCY – Almirola owns two top-five and five top-10 finishes in the five concrete races to date this season. The Tampa, Fla. native is averaging a finish of 7.8 on concrete ovals in 2011.

Ranked fourth in the championship standings, Almirola trails Reed Sorenson for third place by 17 points.

CHASSIS 605 FOR 88 TEAM – The No. 88 Ragu team will unload chassis no. 605 this weekend. The team earned a top-five and two top-10s (Bristol and Charlotte) in the three races with this chassis.

MONSTER MILE STATS – In 11 Nationwide Series starts at the one-mile oval, McMurray earned three top-fives and five top-10 finishes. He holds an average finish of 16.4 and has led 69 laps.

NO. 7 SEASON STATS – The No. 7 team holds six top-five and 12 top-10 finishes in 2011. * TREVOR BAYNE at Dover International Speedway… Bayne has two starts with one top-10 finish in Nationwide Series competition

    QUOTES

Trevor Bayne on racing at Dover: “I have had some success at Dover in the past. We finished sixth in the fall race in 2010 after getting wrecked in the spring. I was unable to run Dover this past spring when I was sick, so I am pumped about running this weekend. All I have been thinking about is hoisting that Monster Mile trophy. I know it’s going to be a difficult task and it will take a great effort from our entire team, but I really feel like we are close to getting that breakthrough win. You have to get your car dialed in during practice to stand a chance in this race. If not, it will be a long day.”

Crew chief Chad Norris on racing at Dover: “We are coming off an open weekend and the No. 16 team is itching to get back on the track and compete. We are looking forward to going to Dover because we have nothing to lose the rest of the year. We are not point racing, so we can be a little bit more aggressive with our setups and in-race calls and strategy. If we have a sold qualifying effort, get our Ford Mustang to handle in the center, and perform on pit road, I expect good things to happen for us this weekend.”

Our car looks great and is very bright, so it will be hard to miss out on the track! It will look even better if we can get it in victory lane,” said Truex.

This is Truex’s 4th start in Nationwide Series races for JGR this season. His 13th place finish at Chicago, combined with his 11th at Atlanta and 4th at Richmond, make three consecutive top-15 finishes for him in his first three races.

Dover holds special meaning to the Truex family as it is close to their hometown of Mayetta, NJ. It is also the track at which the younger Truex clinched back-to-back K&N Pro Series East Championships in 2010. He is also scheduled to drive at Kansas and Phoenix later this year.

“We’re excited to support Ryan and the JGR team for the NASCAR Nationwide Series in Dover this weekend,” said Noel Geoffroy, Vice President of Heinz Brands. “Heinz 57R Sauce has been a part of America’s mealtime since 1911, and we’re thrilled to celebrate our 100th anniversary with this sponsorship.”

First introduced in 1911, Heinz 57R Sauce is celebrating 100 years of infusing fun and excitement into grilling fare across America. Kahne on the racing at “The Monster Mile”

“The key is having a car that can still handle well 30-40 laps into a run and staying out of trouble. Dover is an easy place to get in trouble. It’s definitely one of the more mentally and physically demanding tracks that we go to. I’m looking forward to another race with the Great Clips team this weekend. Stewart Cooper (crew chief) and I work together well and all of those guys just do a great job preparing race cars. We have had some strong runs this year but zero luck to go along with it. Hopefully we can get turned around this weekend at Dover.”

  • Scott Riggs to wheel No. 23 Chevrolet of R3 Motorsports at Dover on Saturday

Scott Riggs to wheel No. 23 Chevrolet of R3 Motorsports at Dover on Saturday

CHINA GROVE, N.C. (September 27, 2011) – Scott Riggs will be returning to some very familiar territory this weekend, in two ways.

First, he’ll be driving the No. 23 North Texas Pipe car for R3 Motorsports in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race on Saturday afternoon. Second, he’ll be doing so at Dover International Speedway, a track where he has shown great poise in the past.

Earlier this year, Riggs drove the No. 23 of R3 Motorsports to a 13th-place finish at Darlington Raceway. In five previous starts at the one-mile concrete oval of Dover, the Durham, N.C. native has tamed the Monster Mile by finishing on the lead lap each time, with impressive results.

Fast Facts: Riggs will be making his 94th career NNS start and eighth of the 2011 season this weekend. During that career span, he’s won four times with three poles while achieving 19 top five and 35 top-10 finishes.

Track Facts: Dover has been a great track for Riggs in his five previous starts. He earned a pole in 2006 while also garnering four top-five starts, while finishing in the top-15 every time with a best of second in 2003. He’s also completed 100 percent of the 1002 laps contested and led 96 of those circuits en route to earning two top five and top-10 finishes.

Tune in for the Win: Fans will be doing some minor channel flipping this weekend as the only practice session being held is Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN 2. Then, on Saturday, qualifying starts at Noon on SPEED before racing action begins, again, on ESPN 2 at 3 p.m. Radio coverage will be provided by MRN Radio and Sirius XM NASCAR Radio Ch. 90.

Scott Riggs Quotes: “I love Dover, and I think it shows in my past runs at that track. There is just something about the concrete and high banking that I have taken to whenever I’ve race there, and I’m looking to do the same there on Saturday.

“This team of R3 Motorsports works hard to build good cars each week. When I drove the No. 23 in Darlington, once I figured out some things and they made some good adjustments to go with it, we were flying.

“I’m hoping to get a real good practice in on Friday at Dover to let Greg (Conner, crew chief) and the guys know what we need for qualifying. Once we can lay down a solid lap for that part, then we can get in the race and go for some more positions. Like I said, I like Dover and I’m looking to have some fun out there with this team on Saturday.”

No. 18 Sport Clips Toyota News & Notes:

    • LOGANO WANTS TO GO “THE EXTRA MILE” AT DOVER: Joey Logano was just one-mile away from victory in the spring race at Dover International Speedway.  One more lap around the track and Logano could have earned his first victory of the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series season.  Instead, that last lap will be remembered for one of the scariest and more hair-raising crashes for the 2011 season thus far.  Coming to the white flag, second-place driver Carl Edward’s car got loose while underneath Logano’s, slid up the track and got Logano aero loose.  Logano’s car slid up the track, hit the outside wall and came back across the track, collecting several other cars in the process.  As a result, the race ended under caution and Logano was credited with a 13th-place finish.
    • SPORT CLIPS WRAPS UP 2011 SPONSORSHIP THIS WEEKEND WITH SPECIAL DECALS:  Sport Clips, a national sport-themed hair-care franchise for men and boys founded in 1995 with over 800 stores nationwide, will wrap up its 2011 sponsorship program this weekend at Dover International Speedway, riding on the side of the No. 18 Toyota.  It’s been a successful season for Sport Clips as a sponsor, collecting two wins (Denny Hamlin in Richmond and Logano at Daytona) and a number of other successful runs.  The No. 18 Toyota will have a couple of special decals on the car this weekend as well.  The car will include the VFW’s Operation Uplink logo on the rear quarter panel as well as the Help A Hero logo on the hood in support of Sport Clips’ fundraising efforts that allow soldiers overseas and those hospitalized to call home and talk to their loved ones at no cost. To date, Operation Uplink has provided more than 4 million free calls home for soldiers and hospitalized veterans.
    • DOVER HOLDS PLENTY OF (GOOD & BAD) MEMORIES FOR LOGANO:  In addition to his “monster” wreck in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event earlier this year, Dover holds a bunch of memories for Logano, both positive and negative.  Logano wrapped up his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Championship at Dover International Speedway in 2007, capping off a remarkable and record-breaking K&N Pro Series East that saw him win seven races over the course of the season.  Logano then made his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut on May 31, 2008 at Dover International Speedway, where he came home with a ninth-place start and a sixth-place finish.  Logano also suffered one of the biggest accidents of his career at Dover in 2009, when he barrel-rolled his No. 20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series machine a total of seven times down the banking of turns three and four.
    • No. 18 TEAM STILL LOOKING FOR POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP:  Despite a frustrating 19th-place finish in the last NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Chicagoland Speedway, Logano and the No. 18 Sport Clips Toyota team for Joe Gibbs Racing still lead in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Owner’s Championship point standings.  Heading into this weekend’s event at Dover, the No. 18 team holds a 30-point lead in the standings over the No. 60 Roush-Fenway Racing team and an 89-point lead over the No. 6 Roush-Fenway Racing team with just six races remaining.  With Kyle Busch, the regular driver of the No. 18 JGR Toyota, taking a few Nationwide Series events off at the end of the season to focus more on the Chase for the Sprint Cup, Logano is jumping into the seat for four of the final seven races of the season.  In addition to the Chicagoland and Dover races, Logano is also scheduled to race the No. 18 at Kansas and Phoenix.  When taking the green at Chicagoland, Logano became the fifth different driver to spend time behind the wheel of the No. 18 this season.  In addition to Logano and Busch, Kelly Bires, Michael McDowell and Drew Herring have all driven the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota this season.
    • CHASSIS:  The JGR team will take chassis #121 to Dover International Speedway.  The last time that chassis saw that track, it nearly found Victory Lane, where Logano finished second to Kyle Busch in a photo finish at Bristol.  Chassis #117 will be the backup.
    • STAT OF THE WEEK:  78 of 82  Logano struggled to a 19th-place finish at Chicagoland Speedway two weeks ago.  However, Logano’s career record of avoiding bad finishes is impressive.  Of his 82-career NNS races, Logano has finished in the top-20 an impressive 78 times.  Three of those four finishes outside the top-20 were the result of accidents.
    • THE RACE:  The OneMain Financial 200 at Dover International Speedway (Dover, DE; 1-mile high-banked concrete oval) is set for Saturday afternoon, October 1st, 2011.  The race will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 3:30 p.m. EST, with radio coverage on MRN starting at 3:00 p.m. EST.

    Joey Logano Quotes:

“Dover is probably one of the coolest tracks that we go to all year long and you see it on the track, because it normally puts on some pretty wild and crazy races, as I’ve been a part of so many times there in the past.  Dover is cool just because it is part high-banked short track, but also has some tendencies of a speedway being that it is so fast.  It really can be one of the most intimidating tracks we go to too with the unforgiving nature of it.  If there is a wreck happening, odds are you are probably going to get involved.  I guess they call it the ‘Monster Mile’ for a reason.  A lot of people think places like Daytona and Talladega are probably what you would call the more intimidating tracks.  But its actually tracks like Dover, Darlington and others that get more of these drivers’ attentions.  Tracks like that can be pretty unforgiving.

“I love Dover and, outside of New Hampshire, it’s the closest thing on the schedule I have to a home track.  I’ve always had a lot of fans up here.  Ever since I came here in the East Series and won the championship, I’ve seen a lot of fans here at the track with my shirts and hats on when we go around the area and do autograph sessions.  So now, I really want to win a race here.  We had a great car in the Nationwide race here in the spring and were a lap away from finally winning one here when we got into that accident with Carl (Edwards) and Clint (Bowyer).  Me and Carl had a great battle that day and it was going to come down to the end between the two of us. Carl just got a little bit loose and slid up the track and got us loose and it was on from there.  I remember getting into the wall and thinking ‘whoa this is going to be big.’  Clint got into us when we came back across the track and several other cars piled in.  I could see the underneath of Clint’s car and was thinking ‘yep, this is big.’  That is a typical Dover wreck.  It’s just too bad because we had a great shot at winning that day.

“Hopefully we can have the same success again this weekend.  There is nothing we want and need more than a win for Sport Clips and the No. 18.  We want to do all we can to continue and build the lead for the No. 18 car with just a few races to go.  It’s going to come down me and Kyle (Busch) to get this Owner’s Championship wrapped up.  That is what this organization is fighting for.  We want to win races every weekend, but we also want this Owner’s Championship.  We struggled at Chicagoland, so there is nothing better we can do than to come back and get a win here at Dover.”
