  • Brad Keselowski Says Cup Success Not Connected to Sitting Out of Nationwide Car

Brad Keselowski Says Cup Success Not Connected to Sitting Out of Nationwide Car

It’s been a popular topic of conversation for years. Lately though, it hasn’t been Kyle Busch or Carl Edwards name included in the discussion about whether Sprint Cup Series drivers should compete in the Nationwide Series.

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”232″][/media-credit]The red-hot Brad Keselowski has been at the top of list after he stepped away from his NNS ride following a crash testing his Cup car last month. While Keselowski watched other drivers take turns behind the wheel of his No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge, he won two Cup races and skyrocketed to a wildcard position. Then he earned a spot in the Chase for the first time in only his second attempt.

Keselowski though, has returned to his NNS duties and he won for the first time since on Saturday in Chicago. It’s also the site of the first race in the 2011 Chase, which Keselowski starts from the 11th seeded position and sixth on the starting grid.

When asked about his time away from the NNS, Keselowski seemed taken aback by its implications. He too, has heard about Cup drivers ruining the lower series or how they should focus on Cup. In his case though, he says there has been no correlation.

“I don’t think it’s fair,” Keselowski said about him running well in Cup because he didn’t run Nationwide. “I don’t think it’s fair to a lot of different people or to reality. The reality of it is we have become more successful as a team as we’ve been able to execute the weekend on the Cup side. Part of the reasons why we’re executing the weekend better are just plain luck.”

Cautions flying at the wrong times or having flat tires didn’t have anything to do with him running the Nationwide car the day before says Keselowski. Because of such he says he doesn’t connect Cup and Nationwide performance but understands that it’s easy for others to. And that it’s easy to say that when he stopped running the NNS his average finish on the Cup side got better.

“Sometimes you have to look at it in a bigger picture than that,” said Keselowski. “Than a simple stat and I feel that I’ve been able to do that and I don’t see where the two are connected. And I see the bigger picture, which was the reason I cam into the Nationwide Series with Penske Racing to begin with, the bigger picture of training people and giving opportunities to future superstars in our sport and that doesn’t mean drivers.”

According to Keselowski his involvement is to help find the next great mechanic, tire changer, crew chief or any other individual who needs and is looking for a shot. He wants to be apart of what takes place and in order to do so he must work alongside them by driving the car. If not that, Keselowski sees other positives to his double duties.

“Maybe it’s as simple as putting a part on the Nationwide car that we’ve been running on the Cup car and it breaks and we take it off before the Chase starts,” he said. “Maybe it’s that simple but there’s so many ways that I think it helps. I want to be a part of it. I was a part of getting the sponsor in here, Discount Tire, to run the Nationwide program and without them this program wouldn’t be possible.”

If Keselowski was to turn around and change his mind about running the NNS, he said it would be hurting a lot of people. After coming to Penske and winning the 2010 championship he wasn’t about to act like he got what he wanted and then didn’t have need for them. Instead, he’s perfectly happy where he’s at, what he’s done and what he continues to do.

“The last thing I was going to do was stab them in the back and leave the Nationwide car just because of a stat that I don’t believe to begin with,” Keselowski said. “Without them quite honestly I don’t feel like I could be where I’m at right now and I wasn’t going to leave and stab them in the back just because it wasn’t convenient for me.”

While some would say that it would be convenient for Keselowski to focus solely on Cup now that the Chase is starting, he’s still running Nationwide and winning. Saturday was his third victory of the season and it came in dominating fashion after starting second and leading 158 of 200 laps. He posted a perfect driver rating of 150 on his way to a seven second win margin.

Time will tell if his continued NNS succeeds leads Keselowski toward putting up a good challenge for the Cup title. Crew chief Todd Gordon though, agrees with Keselowski running both series, saying he has a ton of talent that helps out the Penske organization.

In going along with his driver’s point about finding new stars, he revealed that an engineer the No. 22 team started with at the beginning of the year has since moved up to the Cup Series. To Gordon his driver is the whole package.

“To speak of his double duty, his passion and desire for racecars is 24/7,” said Gordon. “It was 10:40 [Friday night], I was frankly asleep but my phone goes off and what is it? It’s Brad because he’s got some questions about some things we can do to make our racecars better. He eats, sleeps, breathes racecars and with that I think he does a very good job of handling the two.”

  • Sam Hornish Jr celebrates his first top-five finish of the season at Chicagoland Speedway

Sam Hornish Jr celebrates his first top-five finish of the season at Chicagoland Speedway

Joliet, Ill.(September 17, 2011) – Sam Hornish Jr., driver of the No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts Dodge Challenger in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS), finished fifth Saturday afternoon in the Dollar General 300 at Chicagoland Speedway. The event marked the eighth NNS race of 2011 for Hornish and his fifth start in the Alliance Truck Parts Dodge. Saturday’s result was the first top-five of the season for Hornish.

Hornish began the 200-lap race from the seventh position, after posting a qualifying time of 30.87 seconds or 174.950 miles per hour, during Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session. The performance marked the fourth time that the Alliance Truck Parts Dodge started in the top-10 this season. The No. 12 Challenger started the race strong as Hornish was able to maintain his position throughout the first few laps of the race.

Hornish radioed to crew chief, Chad Walter that the car was tight in the middle of the turns and lacked grip corner exit. When the caution flag flew on lap 46 for debris along the backstretch, the Alliance Truck Parts Dodge came down pit road for four fresh tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment hoping to improve the car’s grip. Unfortunately, due to a tire not being properly controlled while on pit road, Hornish was forced to start in the rear of the field in the 20th position.

Upon the restart, Hornish found himself battling with the No. 88 of Aric Almirola and the No. 20 of Joey Logano for a spot within the top-15 as he slowly began making up for positions lost while on pit road. After making contact with the No. 30 of Kasey Kahne, Hornish was worried that there might have been some damage to the right front fender and radioed in for the Alliance Truck Parts crew to check it out upon the completion of their next pit stop. As the laps continued to wind down in the Dollar General 300, Hornish began to improve upon his track position. By the half way mark of the race, he had moved back into the top-10 and had found the grip that the No. 12 was so desperately missing during first half.

While making his way down pit road for the final time of the afternoon on lap 172, the Alliance Truck parts crew changed all four tires and filled the car with fuel. With a lug nut on the left front tire of the car coming loose, Hornish spent longer on pit road then planned and came back out onto the track in the 10th position. Having only 30 laps remaining in the race, Hornish was determined to make up for the spots that were lost and within two laps he had made his way into the seventh position. As he continued to battle with the top 10 contenders, he got held up by the No. 88 for the fourth-place and crossed the finish line in the fifth position, behind Penske Racing teammate and race winner, Brad Keselowski.

“I’m really happy for Penske Racing,” said Hornish. “I knew it was going to be hard to catch Brad (Keselowski) as far out front as he was. Our Alliance Truck Parts Dodge wasn’t great to start, but we were able to make it better all race. We ran into one hiccup early in the race when we had a pit road penalty for the tire violation and that set us back. But after that we got faster and faster all day. We didn’t make an adjustment on that last run that kept us from catching the 88. We just had some problems in the pits. The guys are working really hard giving me good racecars, we just need to make sure we get the whole package put together. We have four more races coming up towards the end of the year, hopefully we’ll get into our flow to get up there and lead some more laps and fight for some wins.”

Hornish will next compete for Penske Racing in the No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts Dodge at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday, October 14 in the Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage.

    No. 20 Notes of Interest

-Ryan Truex’s 13th place finish at Chicago, combined with his 11th at Atlanta and 4th at Richmond, make three consecutive top-15 finishes for him in the Nationwide Series. Truex was the fastest car in the first Nationwide Series practice on Friday, and qualified 4th for Saturday’s race.

-This was Truex’s first race working with crew chief Jason Ratcliff. The two worked well together, which proved crucial as the No. 20 spun on Lap 7 after close racing with the No. 88 of Aric Almirola. He restarted 27th after the caution flag and patiently made his way back up into the top-20 by Lap 19.

-Truex was battling a loose race car which prevented him from passing on the bottom. After some solid adjustments in the pits, he was able to push the No. 20 Martin Truex Jr. Foundation/Schick Xtreme3 Toyota into the top-10 on Lap 58. He settled into 13th position during the mid-section of the race, and the lack of cautions prevented him from moving up through the field.

-Truex will be behind the wheel of the No. 20 next at Dover International Speedway on Oct. 1. Dover holds special meaning to the Truex family as it is close to their hometown of Mayetta, NJ and is the track at which Ryan clinched back-to-back K&N Pro Series East Championships in 2010. He is also scheduled to drive at Kansas and Phoenix later this year.

Ryan Truex on his Top-15 Finish

“We had a top-10 car. We just spun at the beginning there and had to make our way back up. It was the same [situation] as last week; at mile-and-a-half tracks it’s a lot harder to make spots up than on a short track. We just battled back and forth between tight and loose.”

    Truex on the Early Spin

“I don’t know if the 88 [Aric Almirola] got loose under me or what. It felt like I got hit in the left rear, but I don’t know if he just got loose and took the air off my car.”

Truex on Driving for Joe Gibbs Racing

“Everything is working right. They have fast cars every weekend. I just need to not start off these races with such bad luck. Last week it was the ignition. This week we spun out. We should have finished at least top-10.”

    Race Notes

    – Brad Keselowski, won the Dollar General 300 by 8.568 seconds over Carl Edwards.

    – JGR teammate, Brian Scott earned his first career pole and finished 3rd, his career best NNS finish.

Aric Almirola and Sam Hornish Jr. rounded out the top 5.

  • TOYOTA NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Post-Race Notes & Quotes Chicagoland Speedway

TOYOTA NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Post-Race Notes & Quotes Chicagoland Speedway

Brian Scott (third) was the highest finishing Toyota driver in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Chicagoland Speedway.

Scott earned his first career pole and led the field two times for five laps en route to equaling his career best NNS finish.

Camry drivers Ryan Truex (13th), Michael Annett (16th), Kenny Wallace (17th), Steve Wallace (18th), Joey Logano (19th) and Kevin Conway (24th) were also in the field at Chicagoland.

Five Camry drivers are currently in the top-15 in the unofficial NNS point standings following 28 of 34 races in the 2011 season — K. Wallace (seventh), S. Wallace (eighth), Scott (ninth), Annett (10th), and Nemechek (14th).

BRIAN SCOTT, No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 3rd How was your race? “The time that a lot of guys took two tires and we took four really paid off in the long run. The way that the first couple cautions fell, I felt like the end of the race was going to be a long run race and it was. Kevin Kidd (crew chief) and all the guys on my Shore Lodge Toyota did an awesome job making adjustments — keeping us in it for the long haul. I think there at the end we were a little faster than Carl (Edwards), but he was a little better in the traffic, and we just got a little too loose. After some of the luck we’ve had and had a fifth-place run ruined at Montreal, to be able to finish third here is a pretty good day.”

What does this finish mean to your season? “This just makes me more excited to hurry up and get the off weekend over with and get back to racing. We’ll go to Dover and hopefully have a good run — another track that I really like.”

How do you feel about today’s finish? “I feel really good about our run. It’s good to be back in the media center to actually do one of these things — it’s been too long. It’s good to see your faces. We had a good day all day long. We got the pole, led the first lap, but the 22 (Brad Keselowski) was really strong. We knew we were going to have to battle him all day and we needed to get our car better to do that. Through series of good pit stops and good adjustments from Kevin Kidd (crew chief), we started getting our No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota where it needed to be and I think that the long runs towards the end of the race really played to our advantage and our favor and we were able to make up a lot of ground, pass a lot of cars and have a pretty good race with Carl (Edwards) there for second.”

What do you think is needed to continue to get good finishes like today? “Just the consistency that we have in the team. To have a solid crew chief and the group of guys that we have on our team, and then to continue to put fast race cars on the race track. Racing with the Cup guys is the best experience that a Nationwide guy can get. You’re not going to get to that level unless you’re racing them. It took us a little bit to really hit on my feel for these new cars — going from the old Nationwide car and not having any Cup experience. But, we really have kind of started to find that and really dial in on it. Our performance has been a lot better than our finishes have shown lately. Today, I think it shows where our performance is capable of a team in a field full of a lot of Cup drivers. I’m proud of the effort and we just need to keep having runs like this to make it happen more often.”

RYAN TRUEX, No. 20 Martin Truex Jr. Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 13th How was your race today? “We had a top-10 car. We just spun at the beginning there — I spun there — and we had to make our way back. The same as last week, but at mile-and-a-half tracks it’s a lot harder to make spots up than on a short track. We just battled back and forth — tight and loose.”

What happened when you spun? “I don’t know if the 88 (Aric Almirola) got loose under me or what. I got hit in the left rear. I don’t know if he got loose or got pushed up into me, or what.”

RYAN TRUEX, No. 20 Martin Truex Jr. Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing (continued) Does it mean anything to come back from the early spin to finish among the top-15? “Not really. We had a better car than that. We should have finished at least top-10.” How are things working with Joe Gibbs Racing? “Everything is working right. They have fast cars every weekend. Need to just not start off these races with such bad luck. Last week it was the ignition. This week we spun out.”

MICHAEL ANNETT, No. 62 Pilot Travel Centers Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing Finishing Position: 16th

KENNY WALLACE, No. 09 Federated Auto Parts Toyota Camry, RAB Racing with Brack Maggard Finishing Position: 17th

STEVE WALLACE, No. 66 5-Hour Energy Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing Finishing Position: 18th

JOEY LOGANO, No. 18 Sport Clips Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 19th

  • Keselowski wins NNS race at Chicagoland

Keselowski wins NNS race at Chicagoland

Brad Keselowski dominated the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Dollar General 300 at Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday and won his first NNS since race since returning to the series after he broke his ankle testing at Road Atlanta.

    [media-credit name=”Bill Gutweiler” align=”alignright” width=”259″][/media-credit]

Keselowski led 158 of the 200 laps. He was only passed for the lead one time and that was by Edwards. Keselowski blamed lapped traffic at the time. Keselowski pitted under green flag conditions while Edwards stayed out. Eventually Edwards ran out of gas allowing Keselowski to go back to the front.

Keselowski held off Carl Edwards by 8.568 seconds for his 15thcareer NNS win and his third of the season.

“Today was a team victory. Good strategy. Good execution. Fast car. We didn’t make any mistakes and a lot of times that’s what this sport is about. It was a really strong showing here today. I’m glad to get the win. Obviously, when you can get extra track time before the Cup race it can be advantageous. I think today was one of those situations. Hopefully it will payoff for tomorrow. We’ll just have to see.” Keselowski said.

Edwards ran out of gas while leading on pit road on lap 124.  Edwards came out nine seconds behind

“Congrats to Brad. He was doing a really good job. I have to thank Fastenal, Ford and I hope folks tune in tomorrow. It is going to be a great race. The first race of the Chase and there couldn’t be a better race track to run at. It has multiple grooves and it is a really fun place. I just wish we had gotten a caution to get another chance at this one.” Edwards said.

Brian Scott finished third, Aric Almirola fourth and Sam Hornish Jr. finished fifth.

Scott earned his first career pole and led five laps en route to equaling his career best NNS finish (Chicagoland 2010).

“I think there at the end we were a little faster than Carl (Edwards), but he was a little better in the traffic, and we just got a little too loose.  After some of the luck we’ve had and had a fifth-place run ruined at Montreal, to be able to finish third here is a pretty good day.” Scott said.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished 8th and holds a 14-point lead over Elliott Sadler in the series standings.

There were three caution periods for only eight laps in a relatively problem free event. There were eight lead changes between only five drivers.

    • Kenseth has finished second on three occasions at Chicagoland; twice in the Sprint Cup Series (2005 and 2007) and once in the Nationwide Series (2007). In fact, Kenseth came just one place short in each race from sweeping the track in both series in 2007.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., driver of the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, enters Saturday’s Dollar General 300 with a 16 point lead in the NNS standings over Elliot Sadler. Stenhouse met with media members at Chicagoland Speedway to discuss his lead and more.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford) – CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE THIS WEEKEND TO BE SUCCESSFUL HERE AT CHICAGOLAND SPEEDWAY? “For us I think it is good to get back here. We had a really fast Mustang last time we were here and had an issue on pit road that kind of cost us a few spots there. We blew a right front. We are good to get back to the mile-and-a-half tracks late in the season because we have been running really strong on them. Atlanta was a really good race for us and I have always liked coming to Chicago after coming here in our ARCA car in 2008. It has always been one of my favorite mile-and-a-half tracks. It is really fast and a lot of fun to drive. We are looking forward to getting on track today and getting our practice in. Hopefully we have a really good race on Saturday.”

HOW DO YOU BALANCE POINTS VERSUS WINS AS RACES UNFOLD? “I think if you look at it over the whole season, no matter where you are in points you have to go out there and get all the points you can. You don’t have to really worry about the points; you just go do the best job you can do. I don’t think you can really technically points race until Homestead when you know exactly what you need. The way our series has been this year, whoever is leading tends to have a bad race and brings everybody right back into it. It doesn’t matter if you are 70 or 80 points out of it. Come Homestead, you could be in it still. We just have to stay consistent and I think if we run the way we’ve been running the last few weeks we can do that. We just plan on staying up front as much as we can. If you can stay in the top five you tend to stay out of trouble there and that is really our game plan from here on out.”

HOW DO YOU THINK THE DYNAMIC OF THE RACE WILL CHANGE WITH FIVE MORE CUP GUYS IN IT THIS TIME? “I think you are still going to have to beat the same ones, even when all the Cup guys don’t come over. You still have to beat the 18, 60 and 22. Really if you can beat those three, I feel like you are going to win the race, no matter what weekend it is. If you can beat those three I feel like you are going to end up in victory lane no matter what.”

BRAD KESELOWSKI ON CHICAGOLAND SPEEDWAY “I like the fact that Chicago has developed a lot of character over the years. Midwestern winters have taken their toll on the racing surface. It’s not Atlanta, but it is pretty hard on tires. You can race side-by-side, which is what everyone wants to see. Restarts can get crazy at Chicago, especially if you are on the inside, because guys can really hold you down on the bottom and make life difficult for you. Being a Midwestern guy, it would mean a lot to me to pick up a win there. I’ve had good cars, but we haven’t been able to capitalize on them. Todd (Gordon, crew chief) and I were really starting to jell before I hurt my foot, but I think we are starting to get comfortable with each other again since I’ve got back in the car. I’m excited for the possibilities that the rest of the year holds for this Discount Tire Dodge team.”

    FAST FACTS

    • Brad Keselowski is seeking his 12th career Nationwide Series pole. He has three this season. His last win in the series came at Bristol.

    • Dodge’s last Nationwide Series win came August 13 at Watkins Glen when Keselowski’s teammate Kurt Busch drove the No. 22 Discount Tire/Ruby Tuesday Dodge Challenger to victory.

DODGE IN THE NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES

    • Dodge is fielding two entries in the Nationwide Series this year with Penske Racing. Sam Hornish Jr. joins Brad Keselowski for a limited schedule. Hornish will make his ninth Nationwide start of the year at Chicagoland.

    THE NUMBERS

    • Dodge has 35 wins in the Nationwide Series. Seven of those wins came last year.

SAM SAYS “I am excited to get back behind the wheel of the Alliance Truck Parts Dodge Challenger this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway. It has always been an exciting place for me to go because I have celebrated an IndyCar Series win and clinched a championship there. The track is fast and with the banking, it carries a lot of speed. Between testing and getting ready for this weekend, the No. 12 crew has been working hard in the shop to provide me with the best equipment out there and I hope I can thank them by ending up in victory lane this weekend.”

    No. 20 Notes of Interest

-Truex’s strong 4th place finish last weekend in Richmond qualified him for the Nationwide Series Dash 4 the Cash at Charlotte Motor Speedway in October.

-Saturday marks Truex’s 2nd start at Chicagoland Speedway in a NASCAR Nationwide Series car, and his 13th start in the Nationwide Series in 2011. He finished in the top-20 at Chicagoland earlier this year in the Pastrana-Waltrip Racing Toyota Camry.

-Truex will be working with crew chief Jason Ratcliff for the remainder of the season. Ratcliff and the No. 18 team won last week’s Nationwide Series race in Richmond with JGR teammate Kyle Busch.

-The No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry will carry a Martin Truex Jr. Foundation and Schick Xtreme3 co-primary scheme this weekend in Chicago in order to promote the upcoming MTJ Foundation events:

    · The 2nd Annual MTJF Fan Event in Manahawkin, NJ on Wed., Sept. 28, 2011.

    · The 4th Annual MTJF Golf Tournament presented by NAPA AUTO PARTS on Thurs., Sept. 29, 2011 at Sea Oaks Country Club in Little Egg Harbor Township, NJ.

    · The 19th Hole Dinner Celebration presented by Sea Watch International (immediately following the conclusion of the golf tournament).

-These events are a fundraising initiative in Truex’s home state prior to the NASCAR races in Dover, DE. In just three years, these events have raised more than $500,000 for community programs. For more information or to register for these upcoming events, visit www.martintruexjrfoundation.org.

-Truex will also be behind the wheel of the No. 20 in Dover, Kansas and Phoenix.

Ryan Truex on New Crew Chief Jason Ratcliff

“I’ll be working with Jason Ratcliff and all of the 18 guys the next four weeks. I will still be racing the 20 car, but pretty much switching car numbers between the teams. I’m excited for it. We have momentum coming out of these last two weeks. We had good runs so that’s on our side. We’ll just go in with the same mindset as these last two weeks: keep the car in one piece, be there at the end of the race and see if we can make it happen.”

Ryan Truex on Previous Experience at Chicagoland

“It’s good when you go somewhere that you’ve been before just because you are that much more ahead going in to practice. You don’t have to spend the whole practice learning the track. To be able to go in and know what I’m doing, just like we were able to at Richmond, is a big help. I can focus on the car instead of learning the race track.”

    QUOTES

Stenhouse, Jr. on racing at Chicagoland Speedway:

“I am looking forward to going back to Chicagoland. We didn’t get the finish we wanted there earlier this year due to some bad luck. We have had a lot of success at 1.5-mile tracks so far this year and they are becoming my favorite type of track to race at. I feel confident that we will have a strong No. 6 Mustang and we will be battling for the win at Chicagoland.”

Crew chief Mike Kelley on racing at Chicagoland Speedway:

“Ricky has mastered the 1.5-mile race tracks this year. This will be a completely different set-up than we ran there earlier in the year due to racing during the day. This track is super fast and slick which suits Ricky’s driving style. Our No. 6 team did an excellent job on pit-road last week so with fast pit stops and the right adjustments, I am confident that we can get this Ford back to victory lane and our third victory of the season.”
