NAPA Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

No. 18 Sherwin-Williams/Fix Auto Toyota News & Notes:

    · McDOWELL LOOKING FOR A LITTLE REDEMPTION: Michael McDowell isn’t one to show his disappointment. Ask him, and he’ll tell you that he’s getting an amazing opportunity to drive the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on several occasions in 2011 and there is nothing to be disappointed about in that. But in the back of his mind, McDowell might just be looking to make up for some disappointment and get himself and the No. 18 team a little redemption this weekend in Montreal. McDowell proved himself quite the road race specialist earlier this season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Road America. McDowell captured his first-career NASCAR pole at Road America, touring the four-plus mile road course nearly a full second faster than the second-place qualifier Max Papis. McDowell then went on to lead a race-high 30 laps and had a 15-second lead before a late-race caution bunched the field. On the ensuing restart, McDowell slid off the track and spun in the grass, leading to an eventual 12th-place finish.

    · FIX AUTO JOINS SHERWIN-WILLIAMS ON BOARD No. 18 THIS WEEK: Sherwin-Williams and Fix Auto will both adorn the side of the No. 18 Toyota this weekend in Montreal. · NOT A MONTREAL FIRST-TIMER: This will not be McDowell’s first go around at the 14-turn Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. McDowell has competed twice at the speedway in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. He ran the event in 2009 with the Keselowski family-owned No. 96. In that event, McDowell started 32nd and ran as high as sixth before coming home a respectable 11th. Last season, McDowell qualified 12th in the No. 81 machine and ran as high as eighth in the event before engine failure knocked him out of the race.

    · McDOWELL A SPECIALIST? SHOULD BE NO SURPRISE: Michael McDowell surprised many people with his strength on the road course at Road America earlier this year. And Michael liked it that way, keeping his road racing skills mostly quite. However, just one look at his racing resume would give away where his road course abilities come from. McDowell made his early mark in go-kart racing and followed that up with a variety of road racing experience. Following go-karts, McDowell headed to the Star Mazda Series, where he was the 2003 Rookie of the Year and the 2004 North American Champion. Following his Star Mazda career, McDowell co-drove a Daytona Prototype with Champ Car veteran Memo Gidley. The duo finished sixth in the Rolex Sports Car Series Championship in 2005 and gave Finlay Motorsports its first victory in Mexico City. Also in 2005, McDowell made his Champ Car debut at Mexico City, finishing 11th. The following season, McDowell again drove in the Rolex Series and the Grand-Am Cup Series, finishing fourth in points and collecting one win (at VIR). It was only then that McDowell began on an oval-track career, racing in the ARCA Racing Series in 2007, where he finished second in points and was Rookie of the Year.

    · CHASSIS: The JGR team will take chassis #133-18 this weekend to Montreal. Despite the fact that the team has had two road course events already in 2011, this will be the first time this chassis has been run all season long.

    · STAT OF THE WEEK: 66. McDowell has led a total of 66 laps this season in just four starts behind the wheel of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Those 66 laps have come in three different races (Iowa 1, Road America, Iowa 2). Prior to this season, McDowell had led a total of just eight laps in his entire Nationwide Series career.

    · THE RACE: The NAPA Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Montreal, Quebec, Canada; 2.71-mile, 14 turn road course) is set for Saturday, August 20th. The race will be broadcast on ESPN at 2:30 p.m. EST, with radio coverage on MRN starting at 2 p.m. EST.

    Michael McDowell Quotes:

“Road course racing is the biggest part of my racing background and it’s what I’ve done the most, but it’s kind of funny because I haven’t talked about it much because I haven’t been in a really good road race car in NASCAR. When I got to Road America in the No. 18, I kind of knew we were going to have a special weekend even though everyone else didn’t. I’d been looking forward to that race for a long time and we were just a few laps away from winning it. So Montreal is really about redemption for me from Road America. I know we are going to have a great car and this will be a great opportunity to get another pole and have another chance for the win. I know it’s going to be tough though as there will be a lot of good road course specialists there as well.

“Montreal is a very cool track. I tell people it’s kind of like the Martinsville of road course racing. It’s tight and you’ve got concrete walls and not a lot of run off all around you, so that place tends to lead to a lot of beating and banging. It’s also very technical and lends itself more to a road racer because it is pretty challenging. You can’t afford to make any mistakes there and you have to be right on point each and every lap to keep running good lap times. It requires a lot of discipline.

“This is also my last scheduled race in the No. 18 for now and my last shot to get these guys a victory. I feel like I owe them one after Road America. The thing is, we’ve been running up front all year long together and not just at the road courses. Maybe this weekend, we can have the same type of performance and hold onto the win. You can never get wins back, so no need to think about Road America too much. For me, to close the deal would be big. I’ll take a lot from Marcos Ambrose winning last weekend at Watkins Glen. He finally closed the deal. You have to put yourself in position to lose a few before you can win one. Maybe this weekend, it will be our turn to win one.”

Leffler on racing at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

“I’m pretty excited about heading to Montreal this weekend. Having back-to-back road course races allows us to stay in the mindset of running a road course. Coming fresh off of the Watkins Glen race, I’m still in that mode. I really do enjoy the challenges of a road course. Mentally, you have to stay extremely focused to hit all of your marks on every corner of every lap. You lose your concentration for even a second you are going to find yourself in trouble. We have been solid at both Road America and last weekend at Watkins Glen, and I expect to finish the final road course race of the season with another strong finish. Having Boris Said as a teammate this weekend is definitely an added advantage for us that I plan to capitalize on.”

A former No. 62 chassis, this Toyota Camry debuted at Las Vegas in March, where Michael Annett finished recorded a 13th-place finish, followed by an 18th-place finish at Auto Club Speedway in March, and a 31st-place finish after a crash at Darlington in May. •I’ve Been Here Before … While Bowles has not yet competed at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Nationwide Series competition, he has raced there once before. Driving the No. 11 machine for Marty Gaunt in the Canadian Tire Series, Bowles started third and was leading on the final lap, but was taken out by another competitor and finished 20th in the 2010 running of the NAPA Autopro 100.

•Stock Car Experience … Despite having made only four Nationwide Series starts, Bowles is no stranger to racing stock cars. •Last Time Out … Drivetrain issues derailed what was an otherwise strong weekend for Bowles and the No. 64 Aspen Dental team at Watkins Glen last weekend. COMMENTS FROM THE DRIVER: SCOTT SPEED

“I am super excited to get back to Montreal. It has always been one of my favorite cities in the world. It is going to be very interesting to run on a track in a stock car where I’ve run in a Formula One car, I look forward to it though. We are going there with one goal, and that is to win for KHI and Rheem. I’m thankful for this opportunity and I hope to make them proud.”

THOUGHTS FROM THE DRIVER: Elliott Sadler

How do you feel heading into this week’s race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve?

“I’m looking forward to heading up to Montreal. This will be my first time competing at the track, but I was able to go up there a few months ago and get a lay of the land. We were up for a media event and had the opportunity to drive a few people around in a van. I did get to see how narrow the track is, and there is no run off room. Saving your car and keeping your car in one piece until the very end is going to be very important. All I’ve heard is how amazing the fans are in Canada, how much they welcome the NASCAR teams and drivers and how excited they get during race weekend. I’m looking forward to my first trip to get to race in front of a lot of Canadian fans. It’s a road course, which I feel very confident about, and I think it’s going to be a great weekend.”
