National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel Statements Regarding Appeals on the No. 2 and 23 NASCAR Nationwide Series Teams

On August 3, 2011, the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel heard and considered the appeal of the #23 R3 Motorsports NASCAR Nationwide Series team.

The penalties concerns Section 12-1 of the NASCAR Rule Book “Actions detrimental to stock car racing.”; Section 12-4-J: “Any determination by NASCAR Officials that the Race Equipment used in the Event does not conform to NASCAR Rules”; and Section 20A-5.9F: “Unapproved intake manifold.”

This stemmed from opening day inspection for a NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Kentucky Speedway on July 7, 2011.

    The penalties assessed were:

    -$5,000 fine;

    – Placed on NASCAR probation until August 17, 2011 for crew chief Walter T. Giles.

The Appellant acknowledged while the intake manifold was legal in the 2010 rulebook it was not per the 2011 rulebook. The Appellant contested the severity of the fine for the penalties for the error.

Upon hearing the testimony and carefully reviewing the facts, the unanimous decision of the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel was to uphold the original penalties assessed by NASCAR.

The Appellants have the right under Section 15 of the Rule Book to appeal this decision to the National Stock Car Racing Chief Appellate Officer.

Ed Bennett – Appellate Administrator and non-voting member

On August 3, 2011, the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel heard and considered the appeal of the #02 Corrie Stott Racing NASCAR Nationwide Series team.

The penalties concerns Section 12-1 of the NASCAR Rule Book “Actions detrimental to stock car racing.”; Section 12-4-J: “Any determination by NASCAR Officials that the Race Equipment used in the Event does not conform to NASCAR Rules”; and Section 20A-2.3A: “Improperly attached weight.”

This stemmed from a practice session for a NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Kentucky Speedway on July 7, 2011.

    The penalties assessed were:

    -$10,000 fine;

    – Placed on NASCAR probation until August 17, 2011 for crew chief Corrie E. Stott.

The Appellant acknowledged the weight was not properly attached to the car. The Appellant contested the severity of the fine for the penalties.

Based on the facts and circumstances in this appeal, the Panel deemed the fine amount should be reduced from $10,000 to $5,000.

Therefore, the unanimous decision of the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel was to uphold the original penalties assessed by NASCAR while amending the fine of the original penalty.

The Appellants have the right under Section 15 of the Rule Book to appeal this decision to the National Stock Car Racing Chief Appellate Officer.

    KESELOWSKI FACTS

    ·  This weekend’s U.S. Cellular 250 will be the second Nationwide Series race of the season that Brad Keselowski has not participated in.  Jacques Villeneuve drove the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger to a third-place finish at Road America and will also be the driver when the series competes in Montreal later this month.  Keselowski, the 2010 Nationwide champion, is not receiving points in the series this year.

    DID YOU KNOW

    ·  Penske Racing earned its second Nationwide Series win of the year last weekend at Lucas Oil Raceway when Brad Keselowski drove the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger to victory.  Keselowski led the final seven laps of the race en route to his 14th career victory in the series and first at the .686-mile track.

    THE NUMBERS

    ·  Sam Hornish Jr. will be making his first start at the .875-mile Iowa oval.  In seven NASCAR Nationwide Series starts this year, Hornish has two top 10s with an average-finishing position of 16.3.  His last Nationwide start came at Nashville last month where he finished sixth.

DODGE IN THE NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES

    ·  Dodge won its first Nationwide championship last year when Penske Racing’s Brad Keselowski claimed the driver’s title.

    ·  Dodge is fielding two entries in the Nationwide Series this year from the Penske Racing stable.  Sam Hornish Jr. joins teammate Brad Keselowski for a limited race schedule.

    DODGE QUOTE:

“It’s unfortunate what happened to Brad yesterday while testing at Road Atlanta.  However, this gives me the opportunity to drive the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger this weekend at Iowa Speedway while Brad has time to rest and recover in Pocono.  I’m very grateful to have the chance to run in the No. 22 Dodge.  I had practiced the car for the spring race here in Iowa, which lead to Brad finishing third.  I’m looking forward to compete with the Discount Tire crew and hopefully we can bring home a victory.”      Sam Hornish Jr., No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger R/T

FROM THE CREW CHIEF “Fortunately we have had a chance to work with both drivers this year and have found great speed with both.  Parker (Kligerman) tested for us just last week and Sam (Hornish Jr.) drove the Discount Tire Dodge during both practice sessions at Iowa in the spring, setting the car up to lead several laps and finish third without Brad having a lap of practice in the car.  I look forward to our chance to compete for a win with Sam this weekend and don’t feel we need to change the expectations of our performance.  Sam has had several good runs in the No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts Dodge with circumstances beyond his control not giving him the results he deserves.  I hope we can put the whole deal together at Iowa and get him to victory lane.”

  • Some comments deserve to be repeated – Indy/Iowa

Some comments deserve to be repeated – Indy/Iowa

There were some rather interesting comments heard during the NASCAR Indiana weekend relative to observations regarding a bizarre accident during the Nationwide Series held at the Lucas Oil Raceway. Some of those comments absolutely deserve to be repeated.

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”239″][/media-credit]On lap 177 of the Kroger 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race there was an accident involving three cars that necessitated a red flag race stoppage. The cars driven by Tim Andrews, #40 Key Motorsports Chevrolet, and Michael Annett, #62 Rusty Wallace Racing Toyota, somehow found each other and slammed hard into the wall. A mere matter of seconds later, James Buescher, #30 Turner Motorsports Chevrolet, lightly tapped the rear bumper of the #66 Rusty Wallace Racing Toyota driven by Steve Wallace. The Wallace car spun and slammed into his team mate’s car as well as hitting the Andrews car. Thankfully the three drivers walked away uninjured but the same could not be said for their badly damaged race cars.

You could almost sense the uncomfortable atmosphere within the ESPN live broadcast booth manned by Marty Reid, Ricky Craven and Rusty Wallace who had just witnessed his two drivers, including his son, get caught up in a very hard crash not to mention the complete destruction of the two race cars he owns. Rusty Wallace, well known for never mincing words during the course of delivering an opinion, immediately said that he felt the tap from Buescher on his son’s car was the reason Steve Wallace was sent flying into the other motionless cars on the track. It was an opinion not exactly shared by his broadcast colleague Ricky Craven who chose his words very carefully and diplomatically called it a racing incident. The video replay indicated that the contact between Buescher and Wallace occurred several seconds, and a significant amount of feet, prior to the first part of the crash. In fact it also appeared that Wallace hit the gas pedal in an attempt to drive his way past the pair of wrecked cars.

This was later confirmed during a live ESPN post crash interview when Steve Wallace said: “he, (Buescher), bumped me a little bit getting into turn three. Meantime my spotter said check up, check up, check up. I got on the brakes and the car got sideways and it just slid up into the corner. There was nothing I could do. I tried to nail it to accelerate away from (team mate) Michael (Annett). It was just one of those racing deals.”

Prior to this crash there was a long green flag run of approximately 62 laps. Rusty Wallace made the comment that he felt we had not seen the last of the yellow flags in the race and reminded us all that this was short track racing. After the crash a seemingly exasperated Wallace said “I knew there was going to be another caution. I just didn’t think it was going to be my cars. Do you have any idea how much money this just cost me?”

Unfortunately for the Wallaces, the comments didn’t end there and were extended into the days that followed this Nationwide Series race. Even Sprint Cup driver Denny Hamlin weighed in on this issue, via his twitter account, and said “wow. 66 car, (Steve Wallace). Just my opinion but that “touch” from the 30, (Buescher), didn’t make U plow into a wreck that’s 30 seconds old. Ouch.”

But the strongest observation came a few days later via the SPEED Channel’s “Race Hub” program. It’s very well known that every Tuesday night Jimmy Spencer makes some very unique observations regarding the NASCAR racing from the previous weekend. He awards fancy cigars to NASCAR individuals he’s impressed with and passes out crying towels to those he’s not to thrilled with. Sometimes he even awards a straight jacket to individuals that he thinks are just plain crazy.

On this particular Tuesday night “Race Hub” host Steve Byrnes couldn’t wait to ask Spencer if Steve Wallace was going to receive a crying towel. That’s when Spencer went into high gear and said “oh sure he is. Oh my God, for the 6,327th time he crashed. You know Steve, he’s never been to a crash that he didn’t want to be a part of. This one was very tough though, these guys were stopped. Steve, you literally hit a parked car-two of them.”

At this point the SPEED Channel presented the Steve Wallace post wreck interview from ESPN. When Spencer heard the young driver say it was “a racing deal” he grabbed another forward gear and said “Steve, this is just not one of those racing deals. It’s your racing deal. Crash, crash, crash I crashed again.”

Some “Twitter” comments from fans were equally without mercy and the following is a random sampling of their thoughts.

“Say what you want to about (Brickyard 400 winner) Paul Menard. Unlike Steven Wallace he figured out what to do with Dad’s toy.”

“Steve Wallace really worked hard to crash into two parked cars.”

“Steve Wallace crashed and it wasn’t his fault. I’m in shock and awe right now.”

“Odds that Steve Wallace wins: 1000 to 1. Odds that Steve Wallace causes a wreck: 3 to 1. Odds that Steve Wallace gets wrecked: 1 to 1.”

As driver Denny Hamlin said at the end of his “tweet”: “ouch.”

The final thoughts on this subject comes from the young driver’s Uncle: Kenny Wallace. In one of his “tweets” Kenny Wallace presented us with some philosophy and said: “the world is in turmoil. Let’s all live in a tree house and NEVER take a shower. Ha ha ha. Oh, negativity rules these days.”

It was also duly noted that Kenny Wallace received a “tweet” that read: “If I was you I wouldn’t call Rusty for a couple of days.”

In all fairness to Steve Wallace, it has to be pointed out that a few days later there was an unconfirmed report that indicated there may have been fluids on the track from the other two wrecked cars and that’s how he got involved in this incident.

The bottom line here is: Rusty Wallace Racing will repair their #66 Toyota and Steve Wallace will be lined up next weekend at the Iowa Speedway ready to race again.

For right now, all of the above is nothing more than some comments that deserve to be repeated.

Drew Herring / No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota Preview – U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway

Drew Herring / No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota Preview

U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway

No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota News & Notes:

. HERRING KNOWS HOW TO BATTLE BACK (SEE LAST TWO RACES): Drew Herring’s last two NASCAR Nationwide Series starts, coming at Nashville Superspeedway and Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, have produced results of seventh and eighth respectively. At least, that is what the box score will show. But Herring has taken a lot more away from those two races. and he’s proved a lot in those two races to a lot of people. In each race, Herring struggled once the green flag flew. In Nashville, he fell a lap down early (due to a problematic left rear tire) and was as low as 22nd in the running order. In Indianapolis, Herring spent much of the early portions of the race battling a tight racecar, running at the tail end of the lead lap, most of the time in the 15th-18th position range. However in both races, Herring never let the early struggles get to him. And in each race, Herring battled back, thanks to his determination and communication, solid pit stops from the JGR team and great adjustments from crew chief Adam Stevens. At Nashville, Herring recovered to race his way back onto the lead lap and went from 22nd to seventh at the finish. At LOR, Herring made a late charge in the final 20 laps and found himself fourth on the green-white-checkered finish before dropping back to eighth after contact from behind got him loose and caused him to check up in those final laps. The moral of the story. Herring never gives up.

. SPORT CLIPS CONTINUES PARTNERSHIP WITH HERRING & JGR: Sport Clips, a national sport-themed hair-care franchise for men and boys that can be found in 38 states, will continue its strong relationship with Joe Gibbs Racing this weekend at Iowa Speedway, once again sponsoring the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. It will be the third race in a row that Sport Clips has teamed with JGR to sponsor Herring. Sport Clips and Joe Gibbs Racing have built a strong relationship which has seen tremendous success this year, earning two victories in the Nationwide Series (with Denny Hamlin in Richmond and Joey Logano at Daytona). Founded in 1995, Sport Clips has over 780 stores nationwide. Sport Clips will also be the primary sponsor on the No. 20 Toyota at Chicagoland Speedway in September (with Logano) and at Dover International Speedway in October (Logano).

. MORE OF THE SAME WITH ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: Drew’s first NASCAR Nationwide Series start with Joe Gibbs Racing came behind the wheel of the No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota in the spring race at Iowa Speedway. In that event, which was marked by a lot of rain and limited practice time, Herring found himself starting on the pole when qualifying was rained out. That allowed Herring to jump to the lead early, pacing the field for 39 laps. Herring ran in the top-10 most of the afternoon, but several problems on pit road resulted in the team coming home with a 12th-place finish. Since then, Herring has continued to practice his pit stops at the JGR shops and it has showed, as his last two races have went trouble free in the pits, resulting in two top-10 finishes.

. HERRING TO TWITTER? YEP: Drew recently attended a NASCAR conference that brought up the importance of social media. With that, and the prodding of some of those close to him, Herring last weekend made his debut as a NASCAR Nationwide Series driver on Twitter (username @Drew_Herring).

. CHASSIS: The No. 20 JGR team will take chassis #20108 to Iowa Speedway this weekend. The car has run several events in 2011 (Las Vegas, Darlington, Texas) and most recently raced at Kentucky Speedway with Joey Logano behind the wheel . Chassis #20127 will serve as the team’s backup.

. STAT OF THE WEEK: 7, 250, 6. In Drew’s first race behind the wheel of the No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota back in May at Iowa Speedway, he was one of only seven drivers that spent all 250 laps of the event in the top-15. His average running position in the race was sixth.

. THE RACE: The U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway (Newton, IA; 0.875-mile oval) is set for Saturday night, August 6th, 2011. The race will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 7:30 p.m. EST, with radio coverage on MRN starting at 7 p.m. EST.

    Drew Herring Quotes:

“I can hardly wait for this weekend to get here. And I say that even though I’ve run the last two races with the No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota and with all of the Joe Gibbs Racing guys. I’m just pumped because the last two weeks, we’ve run so well and had such great cars. I think we’ve been a lot better than where we finished even though we’ve got top-10s in both those races. We were a top-five car at Nashville but just ran out of laps there at the end of the race. In Indy, we were a top-three car there at the end of the race, we just got beat around on that last restart and knocked back to eighth. And now, we are heading back to a track that I’ve already worked with the guys at. So, I’m as excited to get back behind the wheel as I have all year long. In fact, I’m about as excited and happy as I’ve ever been in racing.

“We ran really good in Iowa back in May. We started up front and we led laps. We just didn’t finish where we should have. I would easily say we were a top-five car that day too, I just screwed up. I had a lot of problems on pit road and that cost us. I’ve never felt as bad in racing as I did after that day. But I’ve worked on my stops and I’ve been fine since then. So, if we can go back and run like we did in May, I think we’ll have a great shot at a top-five and maybe even a shot to be looking for the win there at the end of the race. You never know with these races. I just want to come out of the weekend getting the finish that we deserve. If we are a top-five car, I want to get a top five finish. That is what these guys deserve.

“I’ve learned a lot in these three races with JGR this year. The guys working on this team are absolutely phenomenal. They are all so smart and they all know their jobs as well as anyone. Having Mark (Robertson) spot for me has helped a lot. He can really teach me just by watching my line at some of these tracks I’ve never been too and telling me where some of the other guys are running and beating me. And Adam (Stevens, crew chief) and I have great communication. Adam listens to what I have to say, I listen to what he has to say and he always gets the car handling better. We have a game plan and that always helps out. Working with everyone has just been an amazing experience and I think the results have showed on the track. It’s just awesome and gratifying to know these guys are sticking behind me, a kid coming in here and trying to make it in the Nationwide Series with one of the best teams around.”

    Adam Stevens Quotes:

“I’m anxious to get back to the track because I feel like we left something out there last time. We started up front and led laps, but because of pit problems, we finished 12th. I know we were better than that and Drew knows we were too. We ran really strong all day long. Since then, Drew has worked on his pit stops and we’ve had no issues, so if we can go back there and run like we did in May and not have the problems on pit road, I see no reason we can’t be up near the front of the race all day long. I would be really happy to come out of here with a top-five finish or even better, to be running up front and challenging for the win.

“The biggest difference now will be running at night. We’ve got a lot of good notes from before, but running in the evening will change some things. But it will be nice to go back to the same track with Drew. He had a great feel for the track last time and getting to come back here a second time together should take some of the pressure off of him and he should be a little more relaxed. In the end, hopefully that will translate to good things for the No. 20 team.”

    THE QUOTES

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., No. 6 RickyvsTrevor.com Ford Mustang:  “Iowa is a fun racetrack.  Obviously we had a good run the last time we were there.  It’s a racy racetrack and the bump in one and two makes it really fun.  We’re taking a new car so I’m excited about that with a new body with new updates on it.  Hopefully we’ll be faster than what we were last time.  We’d like to lead a lot of laps and win hopefully we can do that.”

IS IT A LITTLE BIT OF GAMBLE TO BRING A NEW CAR BACK TO IOWA SINCE YOU RAN SO WELL THERE BACK IN MAY?  “No, not at all because everybody else is making their cars better so we’ve got to make ours better.  If you show up at the racetrack with the same car that you had last time everybody else is going to be better and you’re going to be about the same.  We passed a lot of race cars last time we were at Iowa so hopefully we can have a really good night in the pits, have a really fast car and keep it up front.”

Mike Kelley, Crew Chief, No. 6 RickyvsTrevor.com Ford Mustang:  IOWA LOOKS LIKE A CARBON COPY OF RICHMOND.  “Iowa is a seven-eighths mile short track but it carries so much more speed than Richmond.  It races almost like an intermediate car.  You’ve got to have a good aero-balance on the car.  I feel really good about going there.  It’s a great racetrack.  For a stand-alone Nationwide event the fans are excited about having us there it makes everyone race a little harder.”

Toyota NASCAR Notes & Quotes Pocono – Iowa

    TOYOTA NASCAR NOTES & QUOTES Week of August 1 – 7, 2011

TOYOTA TIDBITS INDY   OVERVIEW:  Kyle Buschwas the highest finishing Toyota driver with a 10th-place result in last Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Camry drivers Brian Vickers (15th) and Kasey Kahne (17th) also earned top-20 results in the 400-mile race at the historic 2.5-mile race track.  Kahne started on the outside of the front row and led a race-high 48 laps (of 160), however his Camry was damaged on lap 121 when he was forced to drive through the grass trying to avoid an accident in turn three.

RACE REWIND:  Three Camry drivers earned top-10 results in Saturday night’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.  Joe Nemechek earned a seventh-place finish while Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teammates Drew Herring (eighth) and Michael McDowell (10th) recorded their second top-10 finishes in only three races behind the wheel of a JGR Camry.  Both drivers are set to make their fourth starts for JGR this weekend at Iowa Speedway.

TIMOTHY’S TOYOTA TRIUMPH:  Tundra driver Timothy Petersearned his third career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) victory in Friday night’s race at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.  Peters started 16th in the Red Horse Racing No. 17 Tundra and led the final six laps (of 200) en route to his first win of the season and the eighth victory of the year for Toyota.  The win was also the 88th overall for a Tundra driver since Toyota entered series competition in 2004.   Tundra drivers David Starr (third) and Miguel Paludo (fourth) also earned top-five finishes at the .686-mile race track.

POCONO PERFORMANCE:  The NSCS will return to Pocono Raceway this weekend for the second time this season.  In June, Busch (third) and Martin Truex Jr. (10th) earned top-10 results for Toyota at the Pennsylvania track.  Camry driver Denny Hamlin has more wins at Pocono than any other track on the series circuit.  Hamlin has earned four victories at Pocono — in June 2006, Aug. 2006, Aug. 2009 and June 2010.  Current Camry driver Bobby Labonte has won three times at the ‘tricky triangle,’ including twice in 1999 and in July 2001.   TUNDRAS TO ‘TRICKY TRIANGLE’:  This year will mark the second trip to Pocono Raceway for the NCWTS.  Last August, Tundra drivers earned six top-10 finishes at the 2.5-mile triangular track.  Kahne, driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports, led 17 laps (of 55) en route to a second-place result last year.  Toyota drivers have won at 20 of the 21 venues on the current NCWTS schedule, with  Pocono being the only track where a Tundra driver has not visited victory lane.

BODINE BACK BY HOME:  The NCWTS race at Pocono Raceway is the closest the series gets to Todd Bodine’s hometown of Chemung, N.Y., approximately 115 miles northwest of Pocono.  The two-time series champion, along with his wife Janet, will be hosting the second-annual ‘Todd Bodine Onion Slice Open’ on Thurs., Aug. 4, at the Blue Ridge Trail Golf Course in Mountaintop, Pa.  The charity golf tournament will benefit pediatric patients with traumatic brain injuries and brain disease hospitalized at John Heinz Medical Center in Wilkes Barre, Pa.

NOTES, QUOTES & NUMBERS NASCARSprintCupSeries(NSCS): Since the start of the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for four victories, 23 top-five results, 46 top-10 finishes and have led 1,797 laps … After 20 races, Kyle Busch is fourth in the series point standings, 16 points behind leader Carl Edwards … Denny Hamlin (11th), Kasey Kahne (15th) and Joey Logano (19th) are also in the top-20 in the standings … Brian Vickers earned the pole at Pocono in June 2009 … Kyle Busch started in front of the field in June 2010 at the 2.5-mile Pennsylvania track.

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Why have you been so successful at Pocono Raceway? “It’s just one of those race tracks I’ve got a really, really good feel for honestly.  There’s not too many tracks where you feel like when you pull in, you just can’t do wrong, but that’s kind of one of the places.  Honestly, we feel like we should’ve won twice as many races there as what we have even though we’ve won a lot.  It’s just every time we go there we’re in position to win the race just about every time.  Fuel or things like that don’t always help you complete the job, but we’ve had the fastest car there probably 80 percent of the time.” Did you like the new shifting rule at Pocono in June? “I don’t think it changed that much for me.  There were times during the race that I was shifting and times when I wasn’t, just depending on what kind of mode I was in.  It does add something.  I think whether it adds different passing zones, I’m really not sure.  So, it’s a lot different than I think what NASCAR set it out to be.”   KYLE BUSCH,No. 18 M&M’s Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Do you think the current points system is keeping the drivers too close this season? “It seems like it’s a lot easier for someone to have a bad day.  A bad day used to not knock you back as far as what it does now.  I’ve had three bad days this year.  The first bad day I had, I went from leading the points to 14th.  The second bad day, I went from fourth in points to 10th.  Then the last bad day I just had, I went from leading the points back to fifth after New Hampshire.  It’s so hard to get yourself back up the ladder and it takes you so much more time than it used to, so it’s just really hard.  Through the Chase it’s going to be important to not have a bad day.”   JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 Home Depot Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing What do you enjoy about racing at Pocono? “Pocono is really cool on restarts.  You can gain 10 spots or lose 10 spots in one lap.  It’s four- or five-wide and you have to funnel it down in the turns.  With three different turns like that, it can get tricky.  I enjoy racing there.  Now that we’re shifting again, that adds a little bit extra to it.  In my eyes, it makes it more fun.  When you have those long green flag runs and we get spread out, you can keep yourself entertained by shifting or changing stuff up and trying to find different things.”   BOBBY LABONTE, No. 47 Reese Towpower-Highland Toyota Camry, JTG-Daugherty Racing What does it take to be successful at Pocono? “You have to really be good in all three corners there.  Usually, turn three is the most important corner.  Turn one is a forgiving corner and turn two is critical, but it’s not as critical as turn three.  In turn three, you have to be able to gain some speed, but at the same time you have to have a car that will go through (turns) one and two and be able to pass or to be able to overtake somebody.  I feel like you have to have a good engine package, which leads to better strategy for two tires, four tires, staying out on fuel a little bit longer and being able to go the rest of the way.  You have to have a little bit of everything, but turn three is the key part of that race track to me.”   NASCARNationwideSeries(NNS):  During the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for eight wins, 22 top-five results, 56 top-10 finishes and have led 1,201 laps … Kenny Wallace (seventh) is the top Toyota driver in the NNS point standings … Steve Wallace (eighth), Brian Scott (ninth) and Michael Annett (10th) are also in the top-10 in the standings … Des Moines, Iowa-native Annett will raffle off a helmet this weekend at Iowa Speedway for the third straight year to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in support of family friend, Will Krueger … Toyota team owner Rusty Wallace was an integral part of the overall design and layout of Iowa Speedway and is a part owner of the track … Eric Groen, rear tire carrier on the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 Camry, hails fr om Sioux Center, Iowa.   MICHAEL McDOWELL, No. 18 Pizza Ranch Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Are you looking forward to returning to Iowa Speedway in the No. 18 Camry? “It’s nice to be able to come back somewhere.  We had a good run there the first time, too.  This is going to be our last race with Pizza Ranch so we definitely want to have a good end to our run there.  The biggest thing for me is to be able to go back-to-back with this team — two weeks in a row — because jumping in once a month is hard to do.  It’ll definitely be fun to just go two weeks in a row.  Going back to Iowa with a full race under our belts there is also going to be a big help.”   MICHAEL ANNETT, No. 62 Pilot/Flying J Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing What does racing in front of a hometown crowd mean to you? “It’s a huge opportunity that I look forward to every time we go back to Iowa.  Being the premier racing series that comes to the Iowa Speedway and the fact it’s 30 minutes from home and I get to be part of the race is just a dream come true for me.   Now, we just need to go there and win the thing and we’re up for the $100,000 Nationwide ‘Dash 4 Cash’  — so there’s a lot on the line — but we’re looking forward to getting there.” NASCARCampingWorldTruckSeries(NCWTS):  Since the start of the 2011 NCWTS season, Tundra drivers have registered eight wins, 21 top-five results, 40 top-10 finishes and have led 784 laps … Timothy Peters (fourth) is the top Toyota driver in the NCWTS points standings … Todd Bodine (10th), Brendan Gaughan (11th), David Starr (12th) and Max Papis (14th) are also in the top-15 in the point standings … Tundra driver Justin Lofton won the ARCA event at Pocono Raceway in Aug. 2009 and started from the pole in the June 2009 race … Germain Racing’s Hillman family, including general manager Mike Hillman Sr. and crew chief Mike Hillman Jr., are from Lockport, N.Y., approximately 300 miles northwest of Pocono Raceway … Red Horse Racing’s Rick Gay is from Rochester, N.Y., about 200 miles northwest of the race track.   JUSTIN LOFTON, No. 6 Lofton Cattle – Shed TV Toyota Tundra, Eddie Sharp Racing What does it take to be successful at Pocono? “Pocono is a cool race track.  I think I have more laps there than a lot of people in the garage.  That’s actually one place where we go where I feel like I’m at least on par with a lot of the guys.  A lot of the guys in front of us, they’ve been running places for years.  When we go to Pocono, I feel like I’m on par and I know what we need.  Basically, you need a good drafting truck, but it also needs to corner really, really well.  I kind of know the characteristics of how the track goes.  Really just being consistent and stay out of trouble.”

STEVE WALLACE / 5-HOUR ENERGY RACING NEWS AND NOTES: IOWA SPEEDWAY

    · This Week’s 5 Hour Energy Toyota … Steve Wallace will pilot Rusty Wallace Racing chassis RWR-064 in Saturday night’s U.S. Cellular 250 presented by the Enlist Weed Control System at Iowa Speedway. Built new for the 2011 season, this Toyota Camry debuted at Texas Motor Speedway in May, where Wallace finished 17th. The Greensboro, N.C. native then raced it at Dover International Speedway, where he finished 16th, and Kentucky Speedway where he finished 21st. Most recently, Wallace raced this chassis to an 11th-place finish at Nashville Superspeedway last month.

    · Through 21 Races … With 21 races of the 2011 season in the record books, Wallace has accumulated one top-five, three top 10 and nine top-15 finishes, an average starting position of 13.7 and an average finish of 16.9. Wallace has completed 97.5 percent of the laps contested (3,794 of 3,893) thus far.

    · Get to the Points … Wallace is currently ranked eighth in the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver point standings, 65 in arrears to seventh-place driver Kenny Wallace.

    · Wallace at Iowa … In three previous Nationwide Series starts at Iowa Speedway, Wallace has recorded one top-10 finish and has completed 99.9 percent of the laps contested (749 of 750).

    · Former Winner … While Wallace has not yet won at Iowa in Nationwide Series competition, he has visited Victory Lane there once before. Driving the No. 61 machine for Rusty Wallace Racing, Wallace won the inaugural ARCA Series race from the pole in 2006.

    · Welcome Aboard … 5-Hour Energy Racing welcomes Fareway markets, Truck Country and Kum & Go as partners for this weekend’s race at Iowa Speedway.

    · Last Time at LOR … Wallace appeared to be a contender over the first half of last year’s Nationwide Series event at LOR, but an ill-handling Toyota and a late-race miscue on pit road saw Wallace fall to 23rd with just 30 laps remaining. Wallace rallied, gaining 13 positions to claim the 10th position when the checkered flag waved.

    · Last Time Out … Wallace and the 5-Hour Energy team had a strong showing in last Saturday night’s Kroger 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway, but an unavoidable incident with just 25 laps remaining ruined the 23-year-old driver’s chances of a top-10 finish.

    · Rusty Wallace Racing at Iowa … In six previous NASCAR Nationwide starts at Iowa, Rusty Wallace Racing entries have earned one top-10 and three top-15 finishes dating back to the inaugural event on August 1, 2009

    · Rusty Wallace Racing in 2011 … With 21 races completed in the 2011 season, Rusty Wallace Racing’s three NASCAR Nationwide Series entries have recorded a combined two top-five and nine top-10 finishes. Rusty Wallace Racing Toyotas have completed 8,256 of 8,602 laps attempted, and have been atop the leaderboard for 15 laps with drivers Michael Annett, Jason Bowles, David Reutimann and Steve Wallace.

    · Walking For a Good Cause … Wallace will participate in the inaugural Iowa Speedway Foundation Track Walk on Saturday, August 6 beginning at 11 a.m. The Iowa Speedway Foundation contributes to charitable, religious and scientific causes and shows support to the community and those who need it. For more information, log onto iowaspeedway.com.

    · Cast Your Vote … Voting has begun for the Most Popular Driver of the Year award in the Nationwide Series. Fans are encouraged to log onto NASCAR.com to vote for their favorite driver from the series once per day until voting ends on Thursday, November 17.

“I like racing at Iowa Speedway, it’s a great facility. We ran well there back in May, and I feel like we’ll be competitive again this time around. Iowa is a special place to me because I’ve won there before. It would make it even more special if we were able to pick up a win in the Nationwide Series.” – Steve Wallace on racing at Iowa Speedway

Dover Motorsports, Inc. Declines 2012 NASCAR Sanctions for Nashville Superspeedway

    [media-credit name=”Joe Dunn” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]** *FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*

    Dover, Delaware, August 3, 2011

*DOVER MOTORSPORTS, INC. DECLINES 2012 NASCAR SANCTIONS FOR NASHVILLE SUPERSPEEDWAY*

Dover Motorsports, Inc. (NYSE: DVD) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Nashville Superspeedway, has notified NASCAR that it will not seek any 2012 race sanctions.

Vice President and General Manager of Nashville Superspeedway, Cliff Hawks, stated, “Nashville is a tremendous market filled with passionate race fans. We have some extremely dedicated and talented employees who have made this track a great destination, but the reality is, after ten years of effort, we have to face the fact that without a Sprint Cup race and/or a significant change in the operating model for other events, we simply cannot continue.”

Nashville has a few events left on the schedule for the remainder of 2011 that will not be impacted by today’s announcement.

Denis McGlynn, President & CEO of Dover Motorsports, stated, “We deeply appreciate all the hard work that our employees have put into making Nashville Superspeedway such a remarkable facility, and Cliff Hawks will remain to assist us with transition issues. We have also had years of unrelenting support from state, county and local officials and from the racing community – from racing fans and drivers to sponsors, team owners and various sanctioning bodies. We are, however, at a juncture where we must evaluate all of our options for this track, including its possible sale.”

Nashville Superspeedway first opened in 2001 and is situated on almost 1,400 acres of owned land just outside of Nashville, Tennessee on Route 840 (connecting Interstate 40 with Interstate 24). The 1.33 mile concrete superspeedway has 25,000 permanent grandstand seats, lights for nighttime racing, foundation work for a dirt track, short track and drag strip and infrastructure in place to expand to 150,000 seats.

Dover Motorsports will disclose additional financial details relative to today’s announcement as soon as practicable. The Company expects to incur a to be determined non-cash impairment charge to write down the carrying value of long-lived assets at the facility to fair value and to incur certain severance costs. These will be third quarter events. Dover Motorsports provides a letter of credit to guarantee payment of certain tax exempt revenue bonds whose proceeds were used for public infrastructure improvements benefiting the Nashville facility. The bonds were originally issued by the Sports Authority of the County of Wilson in 1999 in the amount of $25,900,000 and $21,000,000 of this amount remains outstanding. Since the bonds are direct obligations of the Sports Authority and are payable from property and sales taxes generated from the facility, they have not historically been recorded on the Company’s consolidated balance sheet under generally accepted accounting principles. Today’s announcement does not affect these bonds and they will continue to be paid from any applicable taxes. To the extent that the taxes are insufficient, the Company’s letter of credit will be drawn on to make up any difference and the portion of the bonds expected to be so paid will be recorded in the third quarter as a liability of the Company on its consolidated balance sheet.

    U.S. Cellular 250

    August 6, 2011

No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet News and Notes

. Holding On To the Top Two – Even after a bit of a frustrating weekend at Lucas Oil Raceway, Reed Sorenson and the No. 32 Dollar General team held on to the second spot in the championship point standings with a ninth-place finish. Sorenson trails leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr. by just three markers. The last time Sorenson fell below the second position was six weeks ago, after an 11th-place finish at Michigan International Speedway.

. A Tale of Two Starts At Iowa Speedway – It has been feast or famine for Sorenson at the .875-mile short track in the “Hawkeye State”. In his first start last season, Sorenson was collected in an early accident on lap 41 and earned a 36th-place finish. His 2011 start was a much different story with Sorenson posting a fourth-place finish after starting fifth and leading 77 laps.

. Sorenson Season to Date – Consistency continues to be the name of the game for Sorenson and the Dollar General team. After 21 races, Sorenson owns one win, seven top-five and 14 top-10 finishes. He has an average starting position of 11.0 and an average finish of 9.3 on the season.

. Hoping To Go Two-for-Two in the Nationwide Series Dash 4 Cash – The second of four Nationwide Series Dash 4 Cash (D4C) races will take place this weekend at Iowa Speedway. Because he took home the $100,000 prize from the first D4C race at Daytona International Speedway, Sorenson became eligible for the second race this weekend. He will join teammates Justin Allgaier and Jason Leffler, along with Michael Annette in racing for the $100,000 prize.

. First Annual Nationwide Series Farmathalon – On Friday morning, Sorenson and the other three D4C competitors will compete in a Farmathalon at Living History Farms in Urbandale, Iowa. The drivers will compete in three different activities including a horse-drawn carriage race along with a cow milking and corn shucking contest. The driver with the lowest combined time will have a donation made to the charity of their choosing.

. This Week’s Impala – This weekend, Sorenson will pilot TMS-126 in the U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway. This car has been raced at Dover International Speedway as well as New Hampshire Motor Speedway, finishing third and 16th respectively, and was taken to the team’s test session at the Milwaukee Mile.

Sorenson on his second chance at Iowa and the D4C:

“I’m excited that we have a second chance to run at Iowa this year. I guess I feel like we have some unfinished business to take care of at the track. We ran so well there in May and definitely had a chance to win the race had it not been for that tire issue. I think it’s cool too that the second Dash 4 Cash race is at a short track this time as opposed to it being at a track like Daytona. You never know what kind of beating and banging will go on during a Saturday night short track race, especially with that kind of cash on the line. Having my teammates compete for the prize will be fun. It means we have a good shot of keeping the money in the Turner Motorsports family.”
