RICKY STENHOUSE JR., No. 6 Blackwell Angus Beef Ford Mustang (Finished 9th) “That was a tough night. Our Blanwell Angus Beef Mustang was fast. We had a car to win, we just are getting beat on this fuel mileage stuff every week. We are just going to have to go to the shop and figure it out. They are just killing us on those and have the car to win, we just can’t do it without the fuel mileage.”

WILL KIMMEL, No. 39 Crosley/Clarksville Schwinn Cyclery Ford (Finished 35th) “We started getting real free through the center of three there and I don’t know what happened exactly but I caught it once and didn’t catch it the second time. I was afraid of this. I was just trying to make it to lap 200 tonight and we came up short. All the guys have been great and did a great job. I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys. I am really sorry this happened to them, especially after they worked so hard on the car. I put them in a hole. It’s alright; hopefully we will get a chance to do this again.”

Kansas Speedway Announces Track Improvements Repave of facility and road course construction on tap for 2012

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (July 7, 2011) – Immediately following the 2012 STP 400 at Kansas Speedway, the track will undergo a massive renovation project that includes repaving of the existing track surface, reconfiguration of the oval, and the addition of a new infield road course.

“These are significant projects for Kansas Speedway and our fans,” said Kansas Speedway President Patrick Warren. “Given the harsh weather conditions in the Midwest, a repave of our existing racing surface was a must.  Repaving a track is a huge undertaking so we decided it was the right time to make the other changes to our facility, which we believe will enhance our fans experience at Kansas Speedway.”

ISC Design and Development, International Speedway Corporation’s in-house design and construction group, will oversee the repave and road course projects.  The group will utilize state of the art computer modeling to develop track geometry that features up to 20 degrees of variable banking in the turns; the current banking at Kansas Speedway is 15 degree uniform banking in the turns. To accomplish this reconfiguration, construction crews will remove the existing oval track asphalt pavement and re-grade the underlying soil to create the variable banking. In addition to the turns, the frontstretch, backstretch and pit road will all be reconstructed.

Kansas Speedway’s new road course will feature a layout that winds through the infield. Portions of the infield will be graded and paved as part of the road course development.

Race fans can follow the progress of both projects via www.kansasspeedway.com, www.facebook.com/kansasspeedwayorwww.twitter.com/kansasspeedway.

Kansas Speedway will host the Hollywood Casino 400 (fourth Race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup) on Oct. 9, 2011 and the Kansas Lottery 300 on Oct. 8, 2011. Tickets for all events are on sale now by calling 866.460.RACE (7223) or by logging onto www.kansasspeedway.com. Parking is always free at Kansas Speedway and fans can bring in one 14x14x14-inch soft-sided cooler with their favorite food and beverages.

NASCAR Nationwide Points Leader to Compete in Montreal

Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is still an enigma for Reed Sorenson, only a few weeks away from his first NAPA Auto Parts 200 Presented by Dodge

[media-credit name=”Stock-Car Montréal” align=”alignright” width=”177″][/media-credit]Montréal, July 7, 2011 – Caught in a battle to the finish with Elliott Sadler for the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Driver title, Reed Sorenson from Georgia is intrigued by Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve where, at the NAPA Auto Parts 200 Presented by Dodge, he will be challenged for the first time by the famed road course. During the August 19-20 event, the eight-year series veteran will be discovering the Montréal track at the wheel of his Turner Racing #32 Chevrolet.

“Since I’ve never been to Montreal, I am quite intrigued by what I am going to discover,” Sorensen said. “The only track time I have experienced at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve was when I played the Formula 1 game on my Playstation. That is all I know even though in NASCAR, it will be a different game. After talking to a few drivers, I realized half the field likes the track and the other half has a hard time figuring it out.”

“I recently had the pleasure to speak with Reed and I know he is quite enthused at the idea of racing in Montréal,” explained François Dumontier, delegated promoter of the event, and President of Octane Management. “At the time of our event,, the Nationwide series will be at the three-quarter mark of its schedule, and by the looks of what is currently happening, no one seems to be running away with the championship. Reed Sorenson and Elliott Sadler will probably still be going at it. It will be a fantastic opportunity for the fans to see these two NASCAR veterans going head to head for the first time in Montréal.”

Following the July 1st Daytona race, twenty-five year-old Sorenson had competed 148 NASCAR Nationwide races since 2005. His record shows four wins, 38 top-5, and 79 top-10 finishes including two poles. The Georgia resident had also competed 161 NASCAR Sprint Cup races. Following this year’s first 17 events, he recorded a win at Road America in June, eight top-5 and 12 top-10 finishes. The standings showed Sorenson in first with a nine-point lead over Sadler. Ricky Stenhouse Jr was third, 22 points back of Sadler.

“I was Jacques Villeneuve’s spotter last year at Watkins Glen when he drove the #32 Toyota he also entered in Montreal. I know he has always done very well at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve,” remarked Sorenson who will be driving a Chevrolet instead of a Toyota, as Todd Braun sold his team to Steve Turner, who switched car manufacturer for this year. “I will have a talk with Jacques. I am sure he will share some of his secrets. Earlier this year, I took my first start at Road America and I won. I hope the same thing happens to me in Montreal.”

Tickets for the 2011 Montreal NAPA Auto Parts 200, presented by Dodge are currently on sale. To order the best grandstands tickets available and see Reed Sorenson, Elliott Sadler and all the other Nationwide stars take on the likes of Patrick Carpentier, Andrew Ranger, Alex Tagliani and Jacques Villeneuve on Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20, fans must call now 514 397-0007 or order online anytime at www.circuitgillesvilleneuve.ca.

Mandated by Stock-Car Montréal, a wholly-owned subsidiary of International Speedway Corporation (ISC) based in Daytona Beach, Florida, Octane Management is, since 2009, the delegated promoter of the NAPA Auto Parts 200, Presented by Dodge. ISC is the leading promoter of motorsports in North America, hosting over 100 major racing events each year.

  • Matty’s Picks Vol. 9 – Kentucky – Quaker State 400 – July 9, 2011

    Matty’s Picks Vol. 9 – Kentucky – Quaker State 400 – July 9, 2011

[media-credit name=”KentuckySpeedway.com” align=”alignright” width=”300″][/media-credit]This week, the NASCAR Sprint Cup series heads to the state known not for stock car racing, but for its horse racing. Yes, each year the Thunder Over Louisville is the opening ceremony for the most prestigious horse race in the world, the Kentucky Derby. Not only does the Kentucky Derby Festival hold the world’s largest fireworks display in the world, but Kentucky holds more gold in storage inside the vaults of Fort Knox, than any other place in the world. Over $6 billion dollars worth of gold calls Kentucky home in the underground storage vaults.

Enough with the quirky facts about the state and onto the RACING!

Just 11 years ago, Jerry Carroll’s dream came became a reality when he opened the front gates to Kentucky Speedway on June 16, 2000. It was two years and $153 million dollars that finally got the track opened for its first event, a Slim Jim All Pro Series race. The day following, Greg Biffle won the first NASCAR sanctioned race at Kentucky in the Camping World Truck Series. Since then, Kentucky Speedway has been a stop for the Camping World Truck Series, Nationwide Series, IZOD IndyCar Series, and the Firestone Indy Light Series.

In 2008, the track was purchased from owner Jerry Carroll by Speedway Motorsports Inc with the intent to host a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event during the 2009 racing season. Bruton Smith put an additional $50 million into the track, expanding the seating of the track from 66,000 to 107,000, reconfiguring pit road, and adding an additional 200 acres of camping around the complex. This proved to be enough to land an event at the speedway for the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The race Saturday night has officially sold out and should prove to be one of the most memorable nights in the track’s brief history.

Kentucky Speedway’s layout mocks the layouts of Kansas Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway. With 14 degrees of banking in the corners, 8-10 degrees in the Tri-Oval and 4 degrees on the backstretch, Kentucky will prove to be a bit of a challenge to newcomers.

    Daytona Recap

Because my Kentucky intro being as long-winded as it is, although tough with the excitement of the last 20 laps at Daytona, I will keep my recap of last week fairly brief.

My winner pick, Jeff Gordon, played the Hendrick game last Saturday night in an effort to steer clear of trouble. Gordon immediately hooked up with drafting partner, Mark Martin in the first few laps of the race, pushing Martin to the point. The tandem of Gordon and Martin would slip out of the top 20 just before lap number 20, and would ride in the middle of the pack until the 300-mile mark. Following their final green flag stops with 25 laps remaining, the duo would make their charge towards the front, moving to 7th and 8th with just 5 laps remaining. Gordon would make one of the best saves of his career, keeping the Pepsi Max Chevy clear of any barriers but would bring out the caution with just 4 to go. The first attempt at a GWC restart would go foul in Turn 2, putting Gordon in 17th on what would become the final restart. Gordon then hooked up with Toyota driver, Kyle Busch, and the tandem sliced through traffic and Busch pulled Gordon to a 6th place finish, netting me a top 10 for my winner pick.

A.J. Allmendinger would also net me a top 10 for my Dark Horse pick this past weekend in his No. 43 U.S. Air Force Ford Fusion. Also taking the mid-pack route on Saturday night, Allmendinger hooked up with teammate Marcos Ambrose early, but the tandem would eventually split late in the race after the No. 43 ran out of gas on lap 134. Allmendinger coasted onto pit road and would eventually go one lap down to the leaders. It wasn’t until the caution brought out by my winner pick that Allmendinger would gain the Lucky-Dog and jump back onto the lead lap. Starting at the rear of the field following the final two cautions would prove to be beneficial in the end for the Richard Petty Motorsports Driver. Allmendinger would avoid both cautions in overtime to drive to a 10th place finish, netting me another top ten for my Dark Horse pick.

    Kentucky Picks

Onto my picks for this week.

I’m not going to bore you all to death with statistics this week only because THERE AREN’T ANY! I’m also not going to base my predictions on past finishes at Kansas or Chicagoland because the two tracks are rather similar to Kentucky Speedway, but that fact means nothing when it comes to an inaugural race. Each of the 43 drivers starting the race Saturday Night will be foaming at the drop of the green flag in an effort to become the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series winner at Kentucky Speedway.

I’m not sure how legal this is in the eyes of the Matty’s Pick’s rules committee, but I’m picking a guy this week that fans may not always have as a contender to win week in and week out. He has won the past three NASCAR Nationwide Series races at Kentucky, and will use his experiences in the Nationwide cars to give him a bit of an edge on Saturday night. Joey Logano scored his first NASCAR win at Kentucky in 2008, but has not seen victory lane in the Sprint Cup series since his win at Loudon in June 2009. This is my basis for qualifying him as a Dark Horse this weekend, and my guess is he will prove me wrong as a Dark Horse by running in the top 10 on Saturday.

For my winner pick, I am also picking a driver with some experience at Kentucky Speedway. He won a race in the Nationwide Series at Kentucky in June of 2004. Rowdy Busch is my Winner pick for this week and I am basing this prediction off of desire. I think Kyle Busch has a spot on his mantle open for a trophy with the words “Inaugural Race Winner” inscribed on it, and Joe Gibbs Racing will give him the car he needs to go get it. Look for the No. 18 in Gatorade Victory Lane not only Saturday Night, but Friday in the Nationwide Series, and Thursday in the Camping World Truck Series as well.

This ends a very long-winded Matty’s picks this week, (including the two hidden Bonus Picks!) I am extremely excited to be joining the other 125,000 folks at Kentucky Speedway this weekend to watch history be made. I will make the journey from Buffalo, NY to be on hand for this epic event, and look forward to sharing some good food, good times, and great RACIN’ in the Bluegrass State!!!

Until next time…..you stay classy NASCAR NATION!!

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes – NNS Race Advance – Kentucky

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes NASCAR Nationwide Race Advance Feed the Children 300 Kentucky Speedway Friday, July 8, 2011

DODGE QUOTES: “I’ve really enjoyed racing at Kentucky over the last few years.  It’s hard to believe that I only have three (Nationwide) starts there in my career.  I’ve been able to run up front in every race, but we just haven’t been able to find a way to get to Victory Lane.  Hopefully, we can change that on Friday night.  Our Discount Tire Dodges have been fast, but I think everyone will feel better once we get that first win of the season under our belts.  The fans always come out and support the racing at Kentucky and that makes it a race that I look forward to.” Brad Keselowski, No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Charger

FROM THE CREW CHIEF “Over the last couple of years, Kentucky has taken on some characteristics that make it a little different than the other 1.5-mile tracks we visit.  Turns 1 and 2 are very bumpy, especially on the bottom.  You need to have a smooth ride quality to take the fast way around the track.  That also means a second groove will develop as the race progresses because a lot of drivers will avoid those bumps.  The track gains a lot of grip as the sun goes down and it becomes very fast.  I think it’s a track suited perfectly to Brad’s driving style.” Todd Gordon, crew chief, No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger R/T

TOP-FIVES:  Three Camry drivers drove to top-five finishes at the historic Daytona International  Speedway (DIS) in Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race.  Joey Logano finished third and was  followed to the checkered flag by Kasey Kahne (fourth) and Kyle Busch (fifth).  Kahne led eight times for 19 laps and Busch  led 11 laps over five stints in Saturday night’s race.

LOGANO’S FIRST 2011 TROPHY:  Camry driver Logano, the three-time defending NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS)  race winner at Kentucky Speedway, claimed his first NNS win of 2011 at Daytona Friday night.  Logano led just one lap — the final one — to take the checkered flag after gaining six positions in the final few laps while being pushed by his Joe Gibbs  Racing (JGR) teammate Busch.  Three additional Camry drivers earned top-10 finishes –Busch (fourth), Michael Annett  (sixth) and Kenny Wallace (seventh).  The sixth-place showing tied Annett’s career best finish and marked his third top-10 in  his last four starts.

WALTRIP HEADS HOME:  Owensboro, Ky.-native and Toyota team owner/driver Michael Waltripwill compete in  Saturday’s NSCS race at Kentucky Speedway with a special paint scheme to honor his brother, Darrell, on the No. 15 Camry.   Waltrip’s Camry will display an image of his brother on the hood and a victory lane photo on the quarter panels.  The  younger Waltrip entered NASCAR in 1985 at the age of 22 and his career has spanned a quarter-century.  During his career,  he has four NSCS victories, 11 NNS triumphs and one NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) win to his credit.   He’s a member of the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame and released his first book, ‘In the Blink of an Eye,in Feb.

FOUR GOODNESS SAKE:  Loganowill return to Kentucky Speedway as a considerable favorite, having won three  consecutive NNS races at the track.  The 21-year-old driver has won each event from the pole and has led at least 20 laps in  each race.  In the track’s most recent NNS event, Logano led more than half of the race — 106 (of 200) laps.  At Kentucky, he has three wins, three poles, both track records and has led on 12 occasions for a total of 202 (of 600) laps (34 percent).

BUSCH CHASING RECORDS:  After breaking a tie with Mark Martin for the fifth most career wins across NASCAR’s  national touring series earlier this year, Busch is now eyeing another Martin record.  Busch currently has 48 career NNS wins  in 211 starts, and a win in Friday ’s NNS race at Kentucky would tie Martin’s all-time NNS win record of 49.

TUNDRA TROPHIES:  Tundra drivers have won three of the last four races at Kentucky Speedway.  Todd Bodinewon at  the track last Sept. en route to the 2010 NCWTS championship  and has finished in the top-10 three times at the 1.5-mile speedway.  Johnny Benson drove a Tundra to victory lane in 2008, as did Mike Skinner in 2007.  In just two NCWTS starts  at the track (2008 and 2010), Busch has led the third-most laps (116) and has finished sixth and seventh.

BACK TO THE FUTURE:   The NCWTS race at Kentucky Speedway will mark Tundra driver Justin Lofton’sreturn to  Eddie Sharp Racing (ESR), where he won the 2009 ARCA Racing Series championship.  Lofton, currently 18th in the point  standings, return s to his former team to drive the No. 46 Tundra.  Lofton most recently had a season-best finish of 10th at  Texas Motor Speedway.  The California-native grew up racing BMX and mountain bikes before competing in off-road  events, such as the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb, and eventually moving to stock cars.

NOTES, QUOTES & NUMBERS NASCARSprintCupSeries(NSCS): Since the start of the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for three victories,  19 top-five results, 38 top-10 finishes and have led 1,600 laps After 17 races, Kyle Busch is third in the NSCS point  standings, trailing leader Kevin Harvick by just 10 points Denny Hamlin (11th), Kasey Kahne (19th) and Joey Logano  (20th) are also in the top-20 in the standings …This is the first time the NSCS has ever raced at Kentucky Speedway The  NSCS race at Kentucky will take place about an hour from Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc.  (TEMA) in nearby Erlanger, Ky. TEMA was established in 2006 and employs more than 2,700 residents.

KYLE BUSCH,No. 18 M&M’s Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Are you looking forward to racing at Kentucky Speedway? “Kentucky will be good.  I’m looking forward to getting there.  It’s a great opportunity for the speedway to have the ‘triplethere this weekend — the Trucks, the Nationwide cars and the Sprint Cup cars there all together.  For their first Sprint Cup  weekend, it’s not just a standalone event or it’s not just a Nationwide Series and Cup Series event –it’s all three.  It’s big for  the speedway and hopefully it will be good for myself and Kyle Busch Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing. What type of racing do you expect?  “I couldn’t expect anything but some good, hard racing.  Kentucky is a fast race track.  There’s a lot of sweeping corners  there so you’ve really got to keep your momentum going and it’s a big momentum-type race track.  There’s a lot of throttle  on time there.  You carry a lot of good speed, but yet the place is really wide so you’ve got room for maneuverability.  You  can run the bottom.  It seemed like you can run the middle.  I don’t know how great the top will be, but we’ll have to see  once we get there and what kind of tire we’re on.

MICHAEL WALTRIP,No.  15. Aaron’s Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing How do you feel about recognizing your brother’s Hall of Fame induction on your car? “What a great photo.  And, I was there.  Seeing it still makes me smile.  This was when all the winning started and led Darrell  to the NASCAR Hall of Fame.  What a happy group we were.  So many people who helped him are in it, including my  grandparents.  I had never seen a man so happy.  I have always idolized my brother and because of him, racing is all I ever  wanted to do.  It is truly special for our family that I will be able to honor him by driving this paint scheme at the first Sprint  Cup race in our home state of Kentucky.

NASCAR Nationwide Series(NNS):  During the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for seven wins, 20 top-five  results, 43 top-10 finishes and have led 1,161 laps Kenny Wallace (seventh) is the top Toyota driver in the NNS point  standings Steve Wallace (eighth), Brian Scott (ninth), Michael Annett (10th)  and Joe Nemechek (15th) are also in the top- 15 in the standings …In just four NNS races, Kyle Busch has led the most laps at Kentucky Speedway (311), and has one  win (2004) at the track NNS drivers will participate in a ‘Feed the Children’event at Warsaw High School in Warsaw,  Ky., on Thurs., July 7 at 1:00  PM NNS drivers will help provide families in need with food and personal care items.

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 Sport Clips Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Does your NNS success at Kentucky give you an advantage for the NSCS event? “I have an advantage coming in because I’ve run Nationwide races there lately.  I know what the place is like.  At the same  time, you can’t compare a Cup car to a Nationwide car at all.  A lot of stuff is not going to transfer over.Is Kentucky a unique track? “The race track is fun and different.  You can run the bottom and go over the bumps or you can run the top and have a  smoother racetrack with a longer distance. You might see guys set up their car just to run the high line in turns one and two and maybe some guys that do both.  I’m going to try to make my car do both.  There’s a balance in there somewhere that you  can get your car to go over the bottom and still try to put some grip in your car.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series(NCWTS):  Since the start of the 2011 NCWTS season, Tundra drivers have  registered six wins, 14 top-five results, 27 top-10 finishes and have led 642 laps Timothy Peters (sixth) is the top Toyota  driver in the NCWTS points standings after nine races Brendan Gaughan (10th),  Max Papis (11th) and Todd Bodine  (13th) are also in the top-15 in the point standings The NCWTS has been off for three weeks and will now have five races  in a row Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) has finished no worse than sixth (Kansas) in the first nine races of 2011,  including five victories (Phoenix, Darlington, Nashville, Dover and Charlotte) and one second-place result (Martinsville)Two-time World of Outlaws Late Model champion Josh Richards will make his NCWTS debut for KBM in the No. 15  Toyota Tundra at Kentucky Speedway.

ERIC PHILLIPS, crew chief No. 18 Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports How have you prepared for Josh Richards NCWTS debut in Kentucky? “We were able to get to the wind tunnel a couple times and worked on a few things to try and make our trucks better.  We  also went to The Milwaukee Mile for a two-day test with Josh (Richards).  Josh made some laps in a truck and I think it went  very well.  It should definitely help prepare him for his debut in the No. 15 Tundra at Kentucky, and we ’re looking forward to  his debut in our No. 18 Tundra at Nashville.

The 19th annual Brickyard 400 for the Sprint Cup Series will race on the oval Sunday, July 29, with the Nationwide Series also racing on the oval Saturday, July 28. GRAND-AM will conduct separate races for its Rolex Sports Car Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge on the 13-turn IMS road course Friday, July 27.

“The Super Weekend at the Brickyard will offer non-stop excitement for every auto racing fan with the addition of the NASCAR Nationwide Series and GRAND-AM Road Racing,” said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation president and chief executive officer. “There will be competitive, fender-rubbing action from many different types of machinery for four days, featuring established stars and rising talents, on both the IMS oval and road course.

“This will be an unforgettable event and the start of a great new racing tradition at the Speedway.”

All four days of Super Weekend at the Brickyard will be packed with on-track action, providing great value for fans:

•Thursday, July 26: NASCAR Nationwide Series practice

•Friday, July 27: GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge practice, qualifying and races

•Saturday, July 28: NASCAR Nationwide Series practice, qualifying and race; NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice and qualifying

•Sunday, July 29: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Brickyard 400 race

Brickfest, a music festival featuring a headlining national act, also will return during the Super Weekend at the Brickyard after its debut during this year’s Brickyard 400.

Ticket orders for the 2012 Super Weekend at the Brickyard will be accepted starting Monday, Aug. 1, 2011. Orders can be made at www.imstix.com and through the IMS Ticket Office at (317) 492-6700, or (800) 822-INDY outside the Indianapolis area, or by visiting the ticket office at the IMS Administration Building at the corner of Georgetown Road and 16th Street between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (ET) Monday-Friday.

Details on ticket pricing, race distances for the Nationwide Series and two GRAND-AM events and the complete event schedule will be released at a later date.

The best way for fans to secure their reserved seat tickets for the historic inaugural Super Weekend at the Brickyard is to purchase reserved seats for the 2011 Brickyard 400 on Sunday, July 31 and reorder those tickets during the two-week renewal period starting Aug. 1.

“Today’s announcement is exciting for NASCAR and its fans,” said NASCAR President Mike Helton. “By bringing the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the GRAND-AM Series to the Brickyard as companion events for the Sprint Cup race in 2012, fans will now have the opportunity to see NASCAR’s top two series combined with GRAND-AM’s outstanding sports car racing compete at one of the world’s most iconic racetracks all in one exciting weekend.”

“This is a great day for GRAND-AM and for sports car racing in North America,” said GRAND-AM President Tom Bledsoe. “GRAND-AM has the finest sports car racing in North America, and we’re proud that we’ll be able to showcase our racing – with the Rolex Series and the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge – at Indy. GRAND-AM is an organization on the move, and this announcement personifies that fact.”

The NASCAR Nationwide Series represents the middle rung in NASCAR’s national series, situated between the NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The NASCAR Nationwide Series has proven to be an outstanding series for up-and-coming competitors who aspire to become NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers, with a number of today’s premier series stars having developed their skills in the series over the years.

Many still race in the series, pulling “double-duty.” However, many drivers also have chosen to spend their entire careers on the circuit due to its competitive nature and popularity.

In 2011, the Nationwide Series features Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang and Toyota Camry models with V8 engines generating about 650 horsepower. The cars reach an estimated top speed of 195 mph.

The Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 is the top series sanctioned by GRAND-AM. Its two classes – the exotic Daytona Prototypes and production-based GT cars – run simultaneously at road racing venues across the U.S. and Canada.

One of the Daytona Prototype’s top features is the ability to run any combination of engine and chassis – an extremely raceable and relatively affordable format that has revolutionized sports car racing with plentiful battles at the front of the field and close finishes in virtually every race. DPs are exotic, mid-engine machines that are purpose-built for competition, capable of speeds in excess of 185 mph.

The Grand Touring (GT) class is home to production-based race cars that are similar in appearance to the latest high-performance sports cars. GT is a mixture of U.S.-produced muscle cars going against the international flavor, mainly German, Japanese and Italian models.

The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge is GRAND-AM’s showcase for the latest in international and American-made high performance sports cars, coupes and sedans straight from the dealer showroom floor. The CTSCC has two classes – Grand Sport and Street Tuner.

  • Regan Smith Looking to Reverse Kentucky Memory

Regan Smith Looking to Reverse Kentucky Memory

DENVER, Colo. (July 6, 2011) — Though it’s been four years since he competed at Kentucky Speedway, the memory is still vivid for Regan Smith. And it’s not a fond memory according to the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing driver.

What happened to Smith in the 2007 Kentucky Speedway Nationwide Series race has nothing to do with the  venue. In fact, Smith recently stated that he is looking forward to returning to the Bluegrass state for Saturday night’s inaugural Quaker State 400 Sprint Cup race at the 1.5-mile oval in Sparta, Ky.

But those Kentucky memories still linger for Smith about how he saw a possible victory snatched away due to a fuel issue while driving the No. 4 car for Ginn Racing in his 101st out of 102 Nationwide career races.

“We were the dominant team that evening, but didn’t give ourselves a chance to win due to a fuel miscalculation,” recalled Smith. “I qualified on the pole and led a number of opening laps (45) and felt we were going to win the race.  But when I was leading and called into the pits for an early stop, I was already out of fuel. That put us a lap down and out of contention. I guess you could say I have some unsettled business to take care of at Kentucky Speedway.”

It could be said that Smith and Furniture Row Racing have been taking care of business all year. The single-car team out of Denver, Colo. is enjoying its best season with a win, three top-10s, an outside pole and a berth in the Sprint All-Star Race. Smith is also tied with Carl Edwards for the best qualifying average of 11.235.

“It’s been good, but could be better, especially on the 1.5 and two-mile tracks,” said Smith. “The mile-and-a-half and two-mile venues were good to us last year and we felt coming into the 2011 season that we could make up some ground at those tracks. But that hasn’t been the case and hopefully we can change that this weekend at Kentucky.”

Except for an eighth-place finish at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May, Smith’s record has been uncharacteristically sub par on the 1.5 and 2.0-mile tracks with an average finish of 26.3 in six races.

“Yes, we’ve had some issues at those tracks, like accidents and equipment malfunctions, but overall we still need to pick up our performance,” explained Smith. “We know as a team that we should be better at these tracks and that’s one reason we’re excited about the upcoming Kentucky race. We’re aiming to come away with a good result in Saturday night’s race.”

The Kentucky race will be the 18th of the 36-race Sprint Cup schedule.

“It’s really hard to believe that we’re almost halfway home with the schedule,” noted Smith. “We’re having fun and hopefully the second half of the season will be even better than the first half

JR MOTORSPORTS TEAM PREVIEW   No. 88 GT Vodka Chevrolet / No. 7 GoDaddy.com/Verisign Chevrolet

    EVENT – Feed the Children 300 (200 laps / 300 miles)

    TRACK – Kentucky Speedway (1.5-mile tri-oval)

    DATE – Friday, July 8, 2011

TV / RADIO – ESPN (coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. EST) / PRN (broadcast begins at 7 p.m. EST)

Aric Almirola No. 88 GT Vodka Chevrolet “Even though we came out of Daytona with two wrecked race cars, last week was a solid effort by everyone at JR Motorsports. To go there and run up front all night like we did, and have a chance to win at the end was big. This week Kentucky will be another test for our GT Vodka team. It seems like it’s been hit or miss at mile-and-a-half tracks for us this year. But I feel like we’re up to the challenge to continue improving each week.  “At Kentucky your car has to be very drivable across the bumps. There are bumps everywhere. You’ll run across them on the straightaway, in the corner, at the bottom of the track, and the top of the track. You can’t get away from them. It’s really challenging to get your car to run 170 mph across the racetrack when you’re bouncing all over the place. It puts a big emphasis on the crew chief and the crews to get the car driving properly.”

Kasey Kahne No. 7 GoDaddy.com/VerisignChevrolet   “I’m looking forward to running the next two weekends for JR Motorsports and seeing how their cars feel. They’ve put together a solid, competitive program and I’m thankful to be a part of it. I’m excited to work with a different group over there with Tony (Eury) Jr. and Pops (Eury Sr.). It will be nice to work with those guys. “It has been so long since I’ve raced at Kentucky that it’s tough to remember how the races played out. I think it has been seven years since I raced there, but I know the fans should get to see some great racing this weekend between all three series.”

JR MOTORSPORTS NOTEBOOK – KAHNE TO DRIVE TWO RACES FOR JRM –Kasey Kahne, a native of Enumclaw, Wash., becomes the fifth driver to pilot the No. 7 GoDaddy.com/VerisignChevrolet for JR Motorsports this season. A veteran of Nationwide Series competition, Kahne holds 169 starts with seven wins, 29 top-five and 59 top-10 finishes. Kentucky marks his sixth race in the series this season. Kahne will also drive for the No. 7 team at New Hampshire Motor Speedway next weekend.

KAHNE AT KENTUCKY – The 31-year-old Kahne has two starts at Kentucky with finishes of 11th and 17th. His most recent Nationwide Series start there came in 2004.

NO. 7 SEASON STATS – The No. 7 team holds two top-five and seven top-10 finishes in 2011.  Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ron Fellows, Danica Patrick and Josh Wise have shared driving duties in the No. 7 Chevrolet throughout the year, each scoring a top-10 finish. The team occupies 12th position in owner points.

JRM IN THE BLUEGRASS STATE – The JR Motorsports organization earned a top-five finish in nearly half its starts at Kentucky. The team has three top-five finishes in seven races at the facility since 2006.

ALMIROLA AT KENTUCKY –Almirola finished sixth in his lone Nationwide Series start at Kentucky in 2007. Racing in the Camping World Truck Series, he earned two top-five and two top-10 finishes in three starts. Comparably, Almirola notched one top-five and two top-10s at the 1.5-mile facilities in Charlotte and Chicagoland this season.

NO. 88 SEASON STATS –The No. 88 team owns one top-five and eight top-10 finishes this season.  Almirola is currently ranked sixth in the championship driver points (-81). The No. 88 team is 11th in owner points.

JRM AUTOGRAPH SIGNINGS –Almirola will sign autographs at the JR Nation merchandise hauler in the fan concourse area on Friday, July 8, from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST.

WIN DALE JR.’S RIDE –There is still time to win the keys to Dale Jr.’s Camaro. The Dale Jr. Foundation is giving fans the chance to win one of three prizes with the purchase of a $25 raffle ticket, including a shot at Earnhardt Jr.’s own 2011 Chevrolet Camaro. The contest will run through Sept. 1, 2011, with all proceeds benefitting The Dale Jr. Foundation. For complete details visit

TOYOTA NASCAR NOTES and QUOTES Week of July 4

TOYOTA NASCAR NOTES & QUOTES Week of July 4 – 10, 2011 TOYOTA TIDBITS

THREE DAYTONA TOP-FIVES: Three Camry drivers drove to top-five finishes at the historic Daytona International Speedway (DIS) in Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race.

Three additional Camry drivers earned top-10 finishes — Busch (fourth), Michael Annett (sixth) and Kenny Wallace (seventh). The sixth-place showing tied Annett’s career best finish and marked his third top-10 in his last four starts.

WALTRIP HEADS HOME: Owensboro, Ky.-native and Toyota team owner/driver Michael Waltrip will compete in Saturday’s NSCS race at Kentucky Speedway with a special paint scheme to honor his brother, Darrell, on the No. He’s a member of the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame and released his first book, ‘In the Blink of an Eye,’ in Feb.

FOUR GOODNESS SAKE: Logano will return to Kentucky Speedway as a considerable favorite, having won three consecutive NNS races at the track.

Todd Bodine won at the track last Sept. en route to the 2010 NCWTS championship and has finished in the top-10 three times at the 1.5-mile speedway. Johnny Benson drove a Tundra to victory lane in 2008, as did Mike Skinner in 2007. In just two NCWTS starts at the track (2008 and 2010), Busch has led the third-most laps (116) and has finished sixth and seventh.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: The NCWTS race at Kentucky Speedway will mark Tundra driver Justin Lofton’s return to Eddie Sharp Racing (ESR), where he won the 2009 ARCA Racing Series championship. NOTES, QUOTES & NUMBERS NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS): Since the start of the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for three victories, 19 top-five results, 38 top-10 finishes and have led 1,600 laps … After 17 races, Kyle Busch is third in the NSCS point standings, trailing leader Kevin Harvick by just 10 points … Denny Hamlin (11th), Kasey Kahne (19th) and Joey Logano (20th) are also in the top-20 in the standings … This is the first time the NSCS has ever raced at Kentucky Speedway … The NSCS race at Kentucky will take place about an hour from Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TEMA) in nearby Erlanger, Ky. … TEMA was established in 2006 and employs more than 2,700 residents.

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&M’s Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Are you looking forward to racing at Kentucky Speedway? “Kentucky will be good. I’m looking forward to getting there. It’s a great opportunity for the speedway to have the ‘triple’ there this weekend — the Trucks, the Nationwide cars and the Sprint Cup cars there all together. For their first Sprint Cup weekend, it’s not just a standalone event or it’s not just a Nationwide Series and Cup Series event — it’s all three. It’s big for the speedway and hopefully it will be good for myself and Kyle Busch Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing.” What type of racing do you expect? “I couldn’t expect anything but some good, hard racing. Kentucky is a fast race track. There’s a lot of sweeping corners there so you’ve really got to keep your momentum going and it’s a big momentum-type race track. There’s a lot of throttle on time there. You carry a lot of good speed, but yet the place is really wide so you’ve got room for maneuverability. You can run the bottom. It seemed like you can run the middle. I don’t know how great the top will be, but we’ll have to see once we get there and what kind of tire we’re on.”

MICHAEL WALTRIP, No. It is truly special for our family that I will be able to honor him by driving this paint scheme at the first Sprint Cup race in our home state of Kentucky.” NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS): During the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for seven wins, 20 top-five results, 43 top-10 finishes and have led 1,161 laps … Kenny Wallace (seventh) is the top Toyota driver in the NNS point standings … Steve Wallace (eighth), Brian Scott (ninth), Michael Annett (10th) and Joe Nemechek (15th) are also in the top- 15 in the standings … In just four NNS races, Kyle Busch has led the most laps at Kentucky Speedway (311), and has one win (2004) at the track … NNS drivers will participate in a ‘Feed the Children’ event at Warsaw High School in Warsaw, Ky., on Thurs., July 7 at 1:00 PM … NNS drivers will help provide families in need with food and personal care items.

A lot of stuff is not going to transfer over.” Is Kentucky a unique track? “The race track is fun and different. You can run the bottom and go over the bumps or you can run the top and have a smoother racetrack with a longer distance. You might see guys set up their car just to run the high line in turns one and two and maybe some guys that do both. I’m going to try to make my car do both. There’s a balance in there somewhere that you can get your car to go over the bottom and still try to put some grip in your car.”

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS): Since the start of the 2011 NCWTS season, Tundra drivers have registered six wins, 14 top-five results, 27 top-10 finishes and have led 642 laps … Timothy Peters (sixth) is the top Toyota driver in the NCWTS points standings after nine races … Brendan Gaughan (10th), Max Papis (11th) and Todd Bodine (13th) are also in the top-15 in the point standings … The NCWTS has been off for three weeks and will now have five races in a row … Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) has finished no worse than sixth (Kansas) in the first nine races of 2011, including five victories (Phoenix, Darlington, Nashville, Dover and Charlotte) and one second-place result (Martinsville) … Two-time World of Outlaws Late Model champion Josh Richards will make his NCWTS debut for KBM in the No.

18 Tundra at Nashville.”
