    NASCAR Nationwide Series

BRAD KESELOWSKI (No. 22 Ruby Tuesday Dodge Challenger R/T) Finished 27th “What a bum deal. Some guys just go too impatient on a restart and we got collected. Guys know that it’s ‘go time’ and just overdrive the race track. I got hit from the side and then just got run over. I checked up, but the guy behind me couldn’t slow down fast enough and ran over us. I thought I had it saved when I kept it off the wall, but then I get hit again. We tried to fix it under yellow, but there was just too much damage. We had to take it behind the wall, lost a ton of laps, made it back out on the track, but there was just too much damage inside the front-end.

“A tough deal for this Ruby Tuesday Dodge Challenger. Our car was really good in the first-third of the corners, but not great off. I told Todd (Gordon, crew chief) that I thought our car was a top-three car through the one-third (of the corner), but 20th off. The guys worked hard all night. It’s a tough deal for them. I love this track and really wanted to get a win here. Our finish certainly doesn’t represent how strong our car was tonight.”

    FROM THE COCKPIT.

Q: You’ve been one of the best at Darlington recently. What are the keys to success there?

A: “As silly as it sounds, Darlington really is one of those places where you have to race the race track. If you don’t respect that place, it’ll bite you in a hurry, especially since they repaved it. Since the repaving, it’s still has some of the characteristics of the old Darlington; it’s just a lot, lot faster. You still see big time tire wear and you still fight the same stuff, like getting forward grip off the corners. I like unique tracks like Darlington, places that are drivers’ tracks, where the tires wear out and you really have to drive the car. A lot of drivers hate the place, but you can’t have that mindset going into it, or you’re not going to be fast. Hopefully the “Lady in Black” will have some mercy on us Friday night and we’ll be able to come out of there with a top-ten or even better.”

Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, Pre-Race Quotes: J.J. Yeley, driver of the No. 46 Red Line Oil Chevrolet Impala:

On Darlington (S.C.) Raceway: “I love Darlington. The race track has so much character and history to it. It is one of the widest tracks that we race at with the narrowest racing groove.”

On The Key To Success At The Track They Call Too Tough To Tame: “The biggest thing about Darlington is staying focused behind the wheel. The groove at Darlington is less than two feet from the fence and we are running close to 200 miles per hour! It is not uncommon to rub the fence at least two or three times in a race.”

On What You Need To Tame Darlington: “Darlington is a track that takes the whole package in order to be successful. Now that the track has been re-paved, horsepower is more important now than it has ever been. Track position is also very critical because it is tough to pass.”

On His Fondest Memory At Darlington (S.C.) Raceway: “My fondest moment of Darlington was my first test in a Nationwide Series car. It was so exciting running right against the wall, almost wide open all the way around the track. It was the closest style of race track that I learned to race on in open wheel.”

On Racing Saturday Night Compared To Sunday or Sunday Night: “It is nice to have Saturday night races. It allows me to spend more time with my family compared to a Sunday night race that I won’t get home until very late or even the next morning. I prefer night races to day races anyway. The cars are faster, the track has more grip so the racing is usually better.”

On Making Speed Dice A Weekly Fixture For His Fan Base: “I do enjoy doing Speed Dice on a weekly basis. My fans seem to really enjoy playing, I have been averaging around 250+ people between Twitter (@jjyeley1) or on my Facebook page. My goal is to eventually have 20,000 twitter followers by the end of the year. It’s something a little different but a great way to keep in touch with my fans frequently.”

  • Bayne Released from Mayo Clinic

    Bayne Released from Mayo Clinic

CONCORD, N.C. (May 5, 2011) – Roush Fenway Racing’s Trevor Bayne has been released from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. after being admitted last week for testing and evaluation. The 20-year old Daytona 500 winner will continue to be monitored closely by the Mayo Clinic team. He is expected to return to his NASCAR racing duties with both Roush Fenway Racing in the Nationwide Series and the Wood Brothers in the Sprint Cup Series this season. He will not, however, be in the No. 16 Roush Fenway Nationwide Series entry this weekend at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. No timeframe has been set for Bayne’s return at this point.

“Trevor Bayne was seen by a team of Mayo Clinic specialists where he underwent a series of tests and consultations over the last week,” said Mayo Clinic neurologist Brian Crum, M.D. “He was admitted after suffering from nausea, fatigue and vision impairment. Since his admission, the nausea and fatigue have abated, and the vision impairment continues to be treated with medication, and is showing significant improvement.

“This symptom appears to be the result of an inflammatory condition. Further assessments will be made over the next couple of weeks. His condition is not life threatening or career-ending. We expect he will continue to improve, though the timeframe for his return to racing is unknown at this point. He will continue to be followed closely by his Mayo Clinic team.”

Chris Buescher, who drove the No. 16 Roush Fenway NNS entry last week at Richmond , will again fill in for Bayne this weekend at Darlington . Team officials are unsure of Bayne’s status for next week’s Nationwide Series race at Dover ( Del. ) International Speedway but are hopeful for his return for that race.

  • NASCAR Hall Celebrates First Birthday

Entertainment complex generates $224 million from meetings, conventions   Attendance ranks second highest among sports halls of fame in North America

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 4, 2011) – On Wednesday, May 11, 2011, the NASCAR Hall of Fame in uptown Charlotte, N.C., will celebrate its first birthday. A year ago, the venue captured national attention during its grand opening. This year’s celebration will focus on the local and regional community. Highlights include a visit from Metro School students, special one-day admission price of $5.11 and donations to the Red Cross for tornado victims.

“It is appropriate that we take a moment to show our appreciation for the community that has embraced us,” said Winston Kelley, executive director of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. “We have had challenges in this economy, the same challenges that many start-up businesses have. However, we also have many stories that should make Charlotteans and the NASCAR community very proud.”

As a special treat, various executives and board members will serve birthday cake to students from neighboring Metro School shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11 in the Great Hall. In addition, all customers that day will be treated to a discounted admission of $5.11 in honor of the landmark date, and $1 from every admission will go directly to the Red Cross to fund tornado relief efforts.

In addition to hundreds of celebrity appearances, cross promotions with dozens of area events and attractions and facility rentals as unique as proms and a nightclub backdrop for Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) week, the NASCAR Hall of Fame has two particularly notable accomplishments. In the first year, the attendance surpassed all but one sports hall of fame in North America, and the local tourism industry already has generated business in excess of $224 million.

“On behalf of the Greater Charlotte Hospitality & Tourism Alliance (HTA), which proudly was a leading organization in efforts to build the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, I am extremely delighted by the tremendous positive results of the NASCAR Hall of Fame on the hospitality industry during its first year of existence,” said Mohammad Jenatian, president, HTA. “As an industry, we initiated and proactively advocated for a 2% increase in Charlotte’s occupancy taxes to generate the necessary funding to build the Hall of Fame. In its first year of operation the NASCAR Hall of Fame has been vital in solidifying and retaining the Charlotte area’s and North Carolina’s status as a racing capital and enhancement of our Convention Center and our region as a destination.”

In just one year, the NASCAR Hall of Fame has delivered on the objective set forth by the tourism community. To date, 72 meetings or conventions from outside Charlotte booked the NASCAR Hall of Fame or Crown Ballroom through 2014. With more than 200,000 delegates combined, the direct spend in the area is $224 million, a full $30 million above the cost to build the venue.

“The NASCAR Hall of Fame has provided our region with a unique international attraction and has given our Convention Center a niche that no other city has,” said Jenatian. “The recent National Rifle Association (NRA) Convention with 72,000 attendees, as well as other conventions secured because of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, is exactly what the industry wanted in return for its investment – more events, more conventions, more hotel revenues.”

In addition to the corporate business, surveys indicate 82% of customers visiting the NASCAR Hall of Fame are from out of town, and half say they came to Charlotte just to see the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Further supporting the investment by the tourism community, 67% of visitors stay overnight, and they spend on average one to two times the typical leisure traveler. It is too soon to have a new study commissioned to see the actual overall economic impact on the area, but University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) Economist John Connaughton originally estimated the Hall would contribute $60 million in economic impact annually in the  Charlotte region. This contributes to an already robust economic impact from the motorsports industry. A 2005 UNCC economic study on motorsports in North Carolina found the industry has a $5.9 billion impact on the state and also employs 27,000 people with an average salary of $71,000.

“The Hall has drastically raised the profile of this tremendous local industry (motorsports) that has a statewide economic impact of over $5 billion annually, and it has solidified the three major NASCAR races at Charlotte Motor Speedway,” said Jenatian. “Each of these races has an economic value of over $100 million annually, contributes tons of occupancy taxes, among others, and supports thousands of jobs.”   Customers have traveled from all 50 states and multiple countries to visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and thousands have committed to annual memberships. Season pass holders include people from 44 states and five countries, a clear example of the national appeal of the venue.

In its first 12 months, the NASCAR Hall of Fame entertained more than 270,000 customers making it the second-most visited sports hall of fame in North America. In 2010, the National Baseball Hall of Fame led the way with 281,000 visitors, while the Pro Football Hall of Fame had 191,943 visitors.

“We fully acknowledge our initial attendance estimates turned out to be high, especially in this economy and for a start-up business,” said Kelley. “In retrospect, we needed to extensively research venues comparable to us, such as sports halls of fame in addition to the entertainment attractions. Overall, I’m pleased with the way our team has been able to react to the market conditions. We reigned in expenses quickly and will be able to cover our operating losses through the CRVA reserve fund, essentially the company’s savings account.

“We’ve been open long enough now to shift our focus away from projections and look at reality. When you compare our numbers to today’s marketplace and the other sports halls, we are making excellent progress. Charlotte should be proud to have the second-highest attended sports hall of fame in North America. We are just a few percent shy of baseball, a venue that has decades of history.”

NASCAR has an expansive fan base across America and internationally, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame was built to tell NASCAR’s story, both historic and current. According to NASCAR executives, the attraction is well on its way to an established brand of its own.

“NASCAR is thrilled to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the opening of the NASCAR Hall of Fame,” said Blake Davidson, vice president of licensing and consumer products for NASCAR. “We could not be more pleased with our partnership with the City of Charlotte and the facility itself.  The NASCAR Hall of Fame has set the new standard for other halls and similar attractions to follow.  We are confident that the NASCAR Hall of Fame will continue to serve as one of the most important attractions that Charlotte and the region have to offer, while also resonating as the ultimate destination for all NASCAR fans.”    Jenatian concurs: “As a multi-dimensional travel destination, the NASCAR Hall of Fame has been vital in the city’s journey to become a great place to visit and hold major conventions. We are extremely excited about the Hall of Fame’s role in growing our remarkable industry, as we know the best is yet to come.”

Can Strong Richmond Showing Help Nationwide Regulars Finally Gain on Cup Drivers?

Maybe it was because there were only four Sprint Cup Series drivers in the field or was it because Kyle Busch was nowhere to be seen? Perhaps as many are hoping, the tides have finally started to turn.

[media-credit name=”Barry Albert” align=”alignright” width=”251″][/media-credit]Whatever it may be the Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway on Friday night finally lived up to some of its potential. A recurring headline and/or nightmare over the last few years have been the dominance of NSCS drivers in the minor leagues of the NNS and Camping World Trucks.

Even more so after NASCAR announced the new point format with many stating before the season the new NNS champion would be winless.

Thus far in 2011 of the eight NNS races run heading into RIR a Cup drivers has won all of them. The previously mentioned Busch has won four of those eight. Leaving the Nationwide regulars trying to prove their worth and give the fans a reason to watch.

Friday night was a small step in the right direction when early on they looked like they were going to gang up on the Cup drivers.

Sure, Denny Hamlin dominated the event leading 199 of 251 laps on his way to the win, making it nine-for-nine for Cup driver. Sure, there was also the fact that with less than 20 laps to go only four cars were on the lead lap. But as a whole the racing was marginally better than what had been seen with Cup drivers not only dominating the racing but the finishing order.

The crowd was electrified early when Kenny Wallace made an exciting charge to the second position. Wallace has always been a fan favorite but since his last win in 2001 he’s become more of the lovable loser. In 2011 competing with RAB Racing and pairing with Scott Zipadelli has Wallace knocking on the door to victory lane.

Wallace, though, was sick after the race.

“I’m just completely devastated,” said Wallace, “To run second to fourth all night long and to finish 13th. I’m just really disappointed, you know. We made a mistake — we pitted too early and had to go to the tail end of the longest line. Made a mistake, so I guess we went from third to 13th. It doesn’t feel good. It’s devastating. I’m demoralized.”

Wallace wasn’t the only NNS driver who made a charge early. The turnaround for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. continued on Friday as he took got as high as second but couldn’t catch Hamlin. Aric Almirola on the other hand was able to drive to the lead in his No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet. It’s not often a NNS regular is able to drive up and take the lead from a Cup driver  but Almirola did on Friday.

If confidence is really all drivers crack it up to be, Friday should have been a big kick in the pants for drivers like Wallace, Stenhouse Jr. and Almirola. The will to win should have become stronger and not earning finishes they deserved because of late race hi-jinx and fuel mileage will hopefully push them forward.

The ending may have been the same but the atmosphere was different. What a difference when there’s no “Kyle Busch Show” as its become known. In all fairness it can’t completely be blamed on Busch, Richmond just happened to be a NNS event not on his calendar.

It will be interesting to see if the same type of competiveness in Richmond carries over into Darlington with Busch back behind the wheel. There are currently seven Cup drivers entered in Friday night’s Royal Purple 200 at Darlington. It will be a great test to see if the racing really is changing and if the NNS regulars are becoming frustrated with Cup dominance.

A few weeks ago Justin Allgaier said that he believed NNS drivers were ‘taking it easy’ early on in the season. The reason was that they are still trying to get used and see how the new point system was going to work itself it out.

Are they done playing it safe and ready to push the limits? Friday night certainly looked so. According to Stenhouse Jr., racing Cup drivers makes everyone in the field up their game and race harder. Yet, it didn’t really seem to show until Friday night in Richmond, the season’s ninth race.

Or maybe it’s just wishful thinking. A figment of one’s imagination in hopes that potentially different racing will lead to different winners.

    The Headlines:

Michael Annett and Rusty Wallace Racing’s No. 62 Pilot Flying J team will travel to the North Carolina based team’s neighboring Palmetto State this weekend as the NASCAR Nationwide Series competes in the Royal Purple 200 on Friday night at Darlington Raceway. The South Carolina track is known as one of the toughest racetracks on the NASCAR circuit, therefore it boasts the well-respected “Too Tough to Tame” slogan. The distinct 1.366 mile track can be compared to no other oval the NASCAR Nationwide Series visits, which produces a challenge for both teams and drivers.

Proving his talent with an 11th place finish in last season’s Nationwide Series event at Darlington, Annett’s strong showing at the Lady in Black eases the intimidation brought on by the track’s tough reputation. Friday’s Nationwide Series Royal Purple 200 will be the 24-year-old racer’s third career attempt at the track “Too Tough to Tame.”

Not only is the track demanding, but Darlington also marks the second consecutive one-day show for the NASCAR Nationwide Series with practice, qualifying and the 147 lap race all slated for Friday. Fitting everything into one day in the South Carolina heat can be tough, yet another reason why it’s “Too Tough to Tame” at Darlington.

    Michael Annett on Darlington Raceway:

“You’ve got to be on top of your game heading into the Darlington race. There’s a lot of give and take there and hitting your marks is key. I’m up for the challenge it carries and excited to get on track with Pilot Flying J and Rusty Wallace Racing.”

“When conversations get going on Darlington, you’re guaranteed to hear the ‘Darlington Stripe’ come up. The track is well-respected for the fact that it’s unlikely to leave there without the right side of your racecar scraped up. I definitely earned my stripe in my rookie season at Darlington two years ago, but last year we came out with the car in one piece and with a strong 11th place finish. I’m hoping this week we can pull off another respectable finish at the Lady in Black.”

    The Machines:

Team 62 Primary: RWR-053 – Rusty Wallace Racing’s No. 62 Pilot Flying J team has raced this car at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Auto Club Speedway this season.

Team 62 Back-Up: RWR-051 – The No. 62 team’s last race competing with this chassis was at Bristol Motor Speedway in March.
