‘NASCAR Unites’ Creates Two Million Ways for NASCAR Fans to Support Children’s Causes

Unifying the Motorsports Community Through Volunteerism and Fundraising

RICHMOND, Va. (April 29, 2011) —The NASCAR Foundation today announced “NASCAR Unites,” an industry initiative led by The NASCAR Foundation that creates an opportunity for NASCAR fans, drivers, teams, tracks, sponsors and more to unite to improve the lives of children across the nation. NASCAR Unites engages the sport in a collaborative effort to support children’s causes through fundraising, volunteering, sharing inspirational stories and unifying to make a difference.

To support this new initiative, The NASCAR Foundation will operate three major programs in 2011:

    • NASCAR Day – Celebrated this year on May 20, NASCAR Day is an annual charitable celebration that unifies the NASCAR community to better the lives of children. Plans for NASCAR Day activities will include local activities at numerous NASCAR race tracks around the country.
    • Summer of Volunteer Service – This summer, The NASCAR Foundation will encourage fans to pledge at least five hours of volunteer service in an effort to collectively generate more than one million hours of giving back to local communities.
    • Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award –The Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award will recognize active community volunteers. Beginning April 29, fans are encouraged to submit inspiring stories demonstrating a local champion’s support of children’s causes. Volunteer nominations may be submitted online until July 18.

By implementing these programs, NASCAR Unites will offer fans and the NASCAR community “Two Million Ways to Unite for Kids” in 2011. Through NASCAR Unites’ volunteerism and fundraising efforts, The NASCAR Foundation will grant $1 million to children’s charities and generate one million volunteer hours in local communities to help children lead happier, healthier lives.

“We are so proud to announce the NASCAR Unites initiative,” said Betty Jane France, chairwoman of The NASCAR Foundation. “This is the ‘next evolution’ of The NASCAR Foundation but also, quite simply, just a wonderful idea that extends the reach of the foundation.

“Within our daily lives, it’s important to remember just how fortunate we are … and to lend a helping hand to those in need. That’s exactly what NASCAR Unites aims to do: Improve lives – in two million ways.”

To achieve these goals, The NASCAR Foundation has designed multiple ways to get involved:

    • To achieve one million volunteer hours, supporters are asked to pledge five volunteer hours. Visit NASCAR.COM/Unites to participate and search for volunteer opportunities.

    NASCAR UNITES LAUNCH

    • NASCAR Unites wristbands showcase fans’ passion for children’s causes and encourage acts of service. With a $5 donation, supporters receive a wristband which serves as an icon of the NASCAR Unites campaign.

  • Sam Hornish, Jr. Hopes Step Backwards Leads to Big Step Forward

Sam Hornish, Jr. Hopes Step Backwards Leads to Big Step Forward

While Sam Hornish Jr. has taken a bit of a step backwards, from racing in the Cup Series last year to now competing in select Nationwide races, he firmly believes that this step back will most surely lead soon to big steps forward.

[media-credit name=”David Yeazall ” align=”alignright” width=”300″][/media-credit]Hornish will be back in his Nationwide No. 12 Penske race car this weekend at Richmond International Raceway. He will be sponsored for his fourth start of the Nationwide season, the Bubba Burger 250, by Olympic Paints, a sponsor that was on his car for his best finish to date, a fourth place finish at Pocono a few years ago.

“I couldn’t be more excited for this weekend’s race at Richmond,” Hornish said. “It’s one of my favorite tracks and I have a lot of success here. I’ve always liked the track.”

Hornish is also coming off a successful run at Talladega where he led laps and was in the top five most of the day. He finished the Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Nationwide race at Talladega in the 13th spot.

Yet, in spite of moving forward with the 2011 Nationwide season, Hornish’s step back has not been without its challenges.

“It’s been rough for us,” Hornish admitted. “All the guys that work on my car have other jobs at the shop. So, we’re a side project a little bit.”

“It’s not exactly a perfect scenario,” Hornish said. “But sometimes you have to take a step back to take a step forward.”

“We want to race in the Cup Series but this allows me to keep my foot in the game,” Hornish said of his Nationwide schedule. “We want to give this opportunity to our sponsor to get their feet wet in it and understand where they wanted to be and what they wanted to do. We feel like we’re growing a sponsor and it’s a way to keep myself in the game.”

In spite of the step back, Hornish truly is embracing the opportunities and the lessons to be learned from it.

“For me, it gives me the opportunity to work with new people and a new sponsor,” Hornish said. “On the personal side, I’ve had a lot more time to spend with my family. That’s been one of the benefits of this scenario.”

Hornish also is careful to put his step back this year in perspective, particularly with the difficulties that so many have experienced with the recent storms and tornadoes in the Midwest and Southern parts of the country.

“It’s obviously an unfortunate situation for a lot of people and we’re definitely thinking of that this weekend,” Hornish said. “I woke up five times throughout the night watching the news and the weather.  It’s unfortunate for sure.”

He also got a perspective check when he visited injured soldiers at the Hunter Homes McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia in preparation for the race weekend.

“We did a walk through the spinal cord injury unit at the VA and met a lot of nice people,” Hornish said. “It was a good day and it puts a lot of things in perspective.”

Another benefit of Hornish’s step back is being able to participate in his newest off-track gig, giving voice to Roary the Racing Car, an animated series carried on the PBS Kids Sprout Channel. Roary the Racing Car tracks the adventures of a young race car that resides at the Silver Hatch Racetrack, exploring his relationship with his race car friends and Big Chris, a mechanic who loves karaoke.

“That’s definitely a fun thing for me to do,” Hornish said. “It’s a once in a lifetime and most guys don’t get to have a part on a TV show. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Bottom line, however, Hornish yearns to get himself and his season moving forward so that he can position himself for a return to the Cup Series at some point in the very near future.

“Obviously my goal is to get back into the Cup Series one way or another,” Hornish said. “I don’t just want to start and park.”

“So, I’m just looking how to do that,” Hornish said. “We’ll just see how things play out.”

“I feel like the next step forward is just right around the corner for us,” Hornish continued. “With my previous success at Richmond and how well our test went, I’ve got a good feeling about this weekend.”

“For the fans who are supporting us and giving us wishes and prayers to race more often, I’m hoping we get that job done for them.”

  • Edwards to Auction-Off Nashville ‘Guitar’ Trophy in Benefit for Family of Jonathan Bunting

Edwards to Auction-Off Nashville ‘Guitar’ Trophy in Benefit for Family of Jonathan Bunting   CONCORD, N.C. (April 28, 2011) – Roush Fenway’s Carl Edwards has accumulated quite a few trophies since joining the NASCAR circuit, but he will have a special use for the unique Sam Bass-painted Gibson guitar trophy he won with his dominating performance last weekend in Nashville.   Edwards is auctioning off the famous trophy, along with a one of a kind Sam Bass sketch from victory lane, with the funds raised going to benefit the family of Roush Fenway employee Jonathan Bunting, who passed away last week in an automobile accident.   “All of us at Roush Fenway felt that our performance in that race was a good way to honor Jonathan and the work he did for the company,” said Edwards.   “He was a hard working young man with a young family and all of us together are going to auction-off that guitar and we are going to use the money we raise to help out his family; that includes his wife and two young children. Sam Bass jumped on board immediately and agreed to help us promote this thing and he’s even doing a one of a kind sketch of us with the trophy in victory lane that we’ll include in the auction.   “Nothing we do can bring back Jonathan, but we want his family to know that we are thinking of them and that we want to help – if even in a small way – during this difficult time.”   The guitar is available for bidding through the NASCAR Foundation on http://bit.ly/kuBeTB. One hundred percent of the winning bid will go to benefit the Bunting family.  Bidding will close on Sunday, May 8 at 11pm ET.

  • Trevor Bayne Undergoing Medical Tests; Will Not Race in Richmond this Weekend

Trevor Bayne Undergoing Medical Tests; Will Not Race in Richmond this Weekend

CONCORD, N.C. (April 28, 2011) – Roush Fenway’s Trevor Bayne has been hospitalized and is undergoing tests for symptoms that are thought to be related to the insect bite he sustained earlier this month.

“Trevor was not feeling well early this week and he is currently being evaluated for lingering symptoms that may be related to his previous insect bite,” said Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark.

“Unfortunately Trevor will not be available to drive the No. 16 Ford for us this weekend in the Nationwide race at Richmond. As of now, our plans are to use a substitute driver from the Roush Fenway family of drivers in place of Trevor at Friday night’s race.”

“Obviously Trevor wanted to be in Richmond and he’s upset about not being able to compete. However, his health is our top priority and we insisted that he have these tests to get to the bottom of his symptoms,” added Newmark. “We will work to provide you with further updates as they become available.”

The 20-year old driver was treated and released earlier this month after a reaction from an apparent insect bite on his left elbow that he suffered earlier that week while at home in North Carolina.

DODGE DRIVER QUOTES “I feel as though I have a good understanding of what I need to run well at Richmond and that makes it easy to communicate that to my crew chief and team.  As a result, we’ve been able to put together some good finishes at Richmond.  To me, it’s the ultimate short track.  There is a reason that most drivers put it right at the top of their list of favorite tracks.  (It’s) night racing, under the lights, which is similar to what most of us grew up doing.  You can run side-by-side and rub fenders and do all of the things that the fans want to see.  It’s just an exciting race track and I feel like we can put the Ruby Tuesday/Discount Tire Dodge in Victory Lane this weekend.”

“I couldn’t be more excited for this weekend’s race at Richmond.  It’s one of my favorite tracks and I have had a lot of success here, both in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the IndyCar Series, so I was thrilled when I saw I would get the opportunity to race here again in the Nationwide Series. The last time I ran a PPG-sponsored Dodge was at Pocono a few years ago and we came home fourth, which has been the best NASCAR finish of my career.  I am hoping that the momentum and luck can carry over to this weekend for the No. 12 Olympic Paints Dodge Challenger.” Sam Hornish Jr. No. 12 Olympic Paints Dodge Challenger R/T

  • DRAW•TITE ‘North America’s Favorite Hitch’- Signs With Key Motorsports and Driver Scott Wimmer For Richmond; Launches New DrawTiteRacing.com Website For Race Fans

DRAW•TITE “North America’s Favorite Hitch”- Signs With Key Motorsports and Driver Scott Wimmer For Richmond; Launches New DrawTiteRacing.com Website For Race Fans

Mooresville,NC (April 27, 2011) Key Motorsports announced Wednesday morning DRAW•TITE with its line of “TESTED TOUGH” hitches will sponsor the No. 40 Chevrolet with driver Scott Wimmer in Friday night’s BUBBA Burger 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway. DRAW•TITE, part of Cequent Performance Products, has held the lead in the manufacture of quality towing systems since 1946. The Richmond race coincides with the launch of its most recent website addition www.drawtiteracing.com. “We are pleased to be able to support the Key Motorsports team and look forward to a great race” says Tom Benson, Cequent Performance Products president.

The Key Motorsports Chevrolet posted a top-15 finish in the Nationwide Series visit to .750-mile Richmond oval last spring. Veteran NASCAR driver Scott Wimmer hopes to build on that momentum Friday night.

“The Key Motorsports team is prepared for a good run in Richmond,” said Wimmer. “Gary (Showalter, Key Motorsports crew chief) and everyone at the shop have each put in an extra effort on our Richmond car, it’s a special race for our team. We want to welcome DRAW•TITE and their new site DrawTiteRacing.com, we are glad to have them on board with us and want to have a good result for them in the race on Friday.”

Showalter feels Friday’s race in Richmond will be a turning point for the independent team that has had its share of ups and downs this season.

“Key Motorsports always takes a well prepared car to the track, that is something we have prided ourselves on, getting the most out of what we have to work with,” shared Showalter, who led Key Motorsports to 20 top-20 finishes in 35 starts during the 2010 campaign. “We have had good cars this year and have just had some things we have had to work on and overcome. Our finishes have not been consistent with our efforts and we are ready to change that this weekend.”

Richmond provides a home field advantage for the Key Motorsports team. The original operation, formed two-decades ago by Virginia businessman Curtis Key, was an all-Virginia team based about an hour from the Richmond track.

“We are pleased to be representing the family of DRAW•TITE “TESTED TOUGH” products and we appreciate the opportunity to be partnering with them at our home track,” said Key, who is from Chesapeake, Virginia. “Everyone on the team is pumped up for Richmond we want to have a good race for DRAW•TITE and our fans, friends and family who always support us when we race there.”

SPEED will broadcast Friday’s Nationwide Series race live from the Richmond International Raceway with coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET.

  • TOYOTA NASCAR NOTES & QUOTES – Week of April 25- May 1, 2011 TOYOTA TIDBITS

    TOYOTA NASCAR NOTES & QUOTES

Week of April 25- May 1, 2011 TOYOTA TIDBITS

NASHVILLE NEWS:  Toyota drivers tallied six top-10 results last weekend at Nashville Superspeedway, including a win and runner-up result for Kyle Busch.  Busch started from the pole and led 140 laps (of 150) en route to victory lane in Friday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) race.  Tundra drivers Timothy Peters (third), David Starr (eighth) and Craig Goess (ninth) also recorded top-10 results in the NCWTS event.  In Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race, Busch led 39 laps (of 225) and finished second to eventual race-winner Carl Edwards.  Joey Logano started from the pole in the NNS race and led 34 laps before finishing fourth at the 1.33-mile Tennessee oval.

VIRGINIA VICTORIES:  Camry drivers have recorded eight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) victories in the state of Virginia.  Busch (May 2009 and 2010) and Chesterfield, Va.-native Denny Hamlin (Sept. 2009 and 2010) have swept the last four races at Richmond International Raceway.  Hamlin has also recorded four victories at Martinsville Speedway (spring 2008, fall 2009 and both 2010 races).  Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Hamlin (first), Busch (second) and Logano (fourth) all finished in the top-four last Sept. at Richmond.

LEADING LAPS:  Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teammates Busch and Hamlin have combined to pace the field for 977 of a possible 2,000 circuits in Sprint Cup Series action at Richmond International Raceway, leading nearly 50 percent of the laps in the last four races at the three-quarter-mile short track.

HOMETOWN TIES:  Curtis Markham returns to his birthplace of Richmond, Va., as the spotter for Hamlin and the No. 11 FedEx Camry.  Markham, who calls Fredericksburg, Va., his home, is responsible for the partnership between Richmond- native Hamlin and Joe Gibbs Racing.  When JGR planned a program to help minority drivers get involved in NASCAR, it was Markham who was sent to a Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina where he discovered Hamlin test driving and preparing vehicles for the program with record-setting times.  Markham, who has competed in all three NASCAR premier series, immediately contacted his bosses at JGR and within days Hamlin was signed to a developmental contract with the organization in 2004.

DRIVER CHANGE:  The No. 18 Camry will have a new face behind the wheel of the race car when 26-year-old Kelly Bires makes his inaugural NNS start with JGR at Richmond.  It marks the first race of the 2011 season in which Busch will not pilot the No. 18 Camry, a car that is looking for its third consecutive Nationwide Series owner’s championship this year – – and currently sits third in the standings.  Busch has won four of eight series races this year.  Bires has competed in the series for five seasons with three top-five and 12 top-ten finishes.  He will also drive the No. 18 at Chicagoland Speedway in June.

    NOTES, QUOTES & NUMBERS

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS):  Since the start of the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for one victory, five top-five results, 14 top-10 finishes and have led 704 laps … After eight races, Kyle Busch is sixth in the NSCS point standings, trailing leader Carl Edwards by 38 points … Denny Hamlin (17th), Kasey Kahne (18th) and Martin Truex Jr. (19th) are also in the top-20 in the standings … Hamlin will host his ‘Short Track Showdown’ at Richmond International Raceway Thursday night at 8:30 PM … Camry drivers Busch, Kahne, Joey Logano and Michael Waltrip will join Hamlin in the 75-lap race, which benefits the Denny Hamlin Foundation … Toyota will sponsor the Fan Zone at the event … Busch became the 10th driver in NASCAR history to surpass the 20,000 laps led mark among the top-three NASCAR series last weekend at Nashville … The 25-year-old Las Vegas-native has now led a total of 20,069 laps in the NSCS, NNS and NCWTS … Busch was named First Quarter Driver of the Year, voted on by a panel of journalists from across the U.S.

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Freight Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Do you think Richmond is more like a short track or an intermediate track? “Richmond is kind of a mix of both types of tracks.  You’ve got the speed that comes with an intermediate, but you drive it like a short track.  It’s kind of the one off race track that we go to that everyone loves because there’s so many different racing grooves around that track, and passing when you’ve got a good car is relatively easy.”

How special is it to host a charity Late Model race at Richmond International Raceway? “It’s good for me.  As a Late Model racer I always wanted to run at Richmond, but they quit doing it the year I got into Late Models.  So, for me to be able to host the race bringing them back is awesome.  I’m as excited for that race as any race I race in the Cup Series all year long.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&M’s Pretzel Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Why has Joe Gibbs Racing had so much success at Richmond? “I think it’s really, really cool the way we have been able to run well at Richmond and the way it is with Joe Gibbs Racing, but I give a lot of credit to the team and to the guys.  They build great stuff.  Denny has always run well here and has always been the car to beat.  Denny and I know how to get around this place and know what to talk about with our crew chiefs and know what to explain to those guys and what to talk amongst ourselves to get our stuff better.” What does it take to quickly get around a track like Richmond? “You try to be easy on the brakes getting in, so you don’t lock up getting into the corner, or get too loose getting into the corner.  The center (of the corner) always seems to be a little tight with these cars, and the exit has been so loose.  Nobody has any forward bite coming up off the corner, so it’s pretty bad.  It’s pretty fast and it usually spreads out, and you’ll get a lot of grooves to choose from.  You can pretty much count on the usual exciting short-track racing when you go there.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 Home Depot Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Is it beneficial having teammates like Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch who have been successful at Richmond? “I think it helps a lot.  Our last few runs there, we’ve had really good race cars, too.  It takes us a little bit longer in the race to get our car good.  Last time we were there, I think we took off really slow at the beginning of the race and went down a lap. We got our lap back and drove up to fourth — it just took us a long time to get there.  We’re going to focus on starting off a little bit better this time.  It seems like the longer the race goes there, the better we get most of the time as the track rubbers up a little bit.  To find a little bit more and figure out what my car needs to get a little bit better.” Are you looking forward to racing in Denny Hamlin’s charity Late Model race? “That’s a fun race for sure.  It’s cool, Denny (Hamlin) does it for a good cause.  It’s cool to see how many people are willing to get involved with it and do it.  I think there are more people now than there was at Southside.  The Late Models at Richmond — it’s a pretty fast race track for them.  It sounds like they tested them and it was alright and the track rubbered up good.  I’m hoping my car is better than the last two years I ran that thing at Southside.  I have a different car this year, it’s Clint King’s car.  It wasn’t ready for the test, so I didn’t get to go up there for the test.  Hopefully, my car is good and I can at least race with those guys that are winning.”

KELLY BIRES, No. 18 Heil Heating & Cooling Products Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Are you excited to be racing in the Nationwide Series again? “It’s a huge opportunity, I think everyone knows, that Joe Gibbs Racing has presented to me, to be able to drive the No. 18 Camry.  It’s been one of the best cars, if not the best car, in this series ever since I’ve been in it.  Without International Comfort Products and the brand Heil coming on board, we wouldn’t be able to do it.  It’s going to be my first race this year that I get to run the full thing and it’s in a car good enough that I should be able to contend with it.” Why did you select Richmond as your first race?

“I came from a short track racing background — from Late Models.  Richmond is a lot like Iowa.  I’ve run good at both of those tracks in the cars that I’ve been in.  I’ve ran top-five, but we’ve had the capability of finishing in the top-10 the few times that I’ve been there.  Richmond and Chicago were the first two races that were basically available to be able to run in the No. 18 Camry.  Those are the first two that we’re going to race.  Chicagoland is a standalone this year and it’s kind of close to where I’m from at home in Wisconsin.”
