  • Mikey Kile To Drive Atleast Seven Races for Turner Motorsports

Mikey Kile To Drive Atleast Seven Races for Turner Motorsports

With a case of stars that includes Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, Jason Leftler, Reed Sorenson, Justin Allgaier, Ricky Carmichael, James Buescher and Brad Sweet, its hard to believe that Steve Turner could make Turner Motorsports better. Well, one more driver has been added to the driver line-up – Mikey Kile.

Mikey Kile is set to drive the No. 30 car for a minimum of seven races, starting at Nashville Speedway.

“This is such a great opportunity for me,” Kile said in the press release. “Turner Motorsports has proven it is a top-tier organization with talented employees and drivers. Their equipment is some of the best in the sport and I am excited about getting a chance to race in it.

“I worked with Stewart [Cooper, crew chief] in my Nationwide Series debut and I am glad I get the chance to work with him again. He and the 30 crew all have experience working with rookies and they have been so helpful already. I also have a great group of teammates, with a wealth of experience, who I can lean on as I make my way into the Nationwide Series.”

Kile ran the entire ARCA Racing Series schedule last year with Venturini Motorsports, scoring his first win at Michigan, along with two pole awards, seven top fives and 15 top-10 finishes.

“Overall, it was a good, solid year and we got a lot of things accomplished that we wanted to get accomplished,” Kile told the ARCA Racing Network of his season last December. “You know, it’s racing, so we had some ups and downs and had a few races back to back that kind of took us out of the championship. Overall, it was a good season and I learned a lot.”

He also has experience in the Camping World Truck Series with Brad Keselowski Racing. In six starts, he has scored three top-15 finishes.

“It was good,” he told me of the experience with BKR. “Our first outing we ran at Martinsville and finished 11th. I think we ran six races and finished top-12 in three or four of the six. We were sixth quickest at Vegas and running top-10 there and top-10 at Texas and a pit stop issue there caught us outside of the top 10. It was a learning curve, but definitely running there and running good, I felt like I belonged there.”

Mikey Kile got started in racing by racing go-karts at a young age. Since then he has moved up the ranks, having success at various levels. Career highlights include four carting championships, eight IMCA modified wins and 2008 USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series Rookie of the Year.

Kile told me when I spoke to him last June that his goal for five years was to be in Sprint Cup and if not Sprint Cup, then Nationwide. This is certainly a step in the right direction.

  • Toyota NASCAR Notes & Quotes Bristol March 2011

TOYOTA TIDBITS KAHNE TAMED DARLINGTON:  In Saturday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) at Darlington Raceway, Kasey Kahne earned his first NCWTS win in a Tundra.  Kahne drove the Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) Tundra at the historic South Carolina track because the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) and NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) had the weekend off.  The 30-year-old started second in the KBM No. 18 entry and led 95 (of 147) laps at the 1.366- mile egg-shaped oval to earn his third career NCWTS win in four career starts.  In addition to Kahne, three other Tundra drivers earned top-10s in Saturday night’s race — Todd Bodine (third), Timothy Peters (sixth) and David Starr (10th).

BREAK OUT THE BROOM:  Camry driver Kyle Busch made NASCAR history last August at Bristol Motor Speedway when he became the first driver to sweep all three races — NCWTS, NNS and NSCS — at one race track in a single weekend.     Busch has more NSCS victories at Bristol (four) than at any other track, as well as two NNS wins and three NCWTS victories at the half-mile Tennessee oval.

SHORT TRACK SUCCESS:  The races at Bristol Motor Speedway mark the first short track event of the 2011 season for NSCS and NNS teams.  Last year, Camry drivers earned three (of four) wins at half-mile short tracks with Denny Hamlin visiting victory lane in both races at Virginia’s Martinsville Speedway and his Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teammate Busch earning the win at Bristol Motor Speedway in the summer.

TENNESSEE TIES:  Two Toyota team members call Tennessee home.  Mike Ford, crew chief for the No. 11 Camry driven by Hamlin, is from Morristown, Tenn.  Charlie Brock, car chief on the NNS JGR No. 18 Camry, is from  Brentwood, Tenn. Brock is the grandson of legendary racer ‘Red’ Farmer — an original member of ‘The Alabama Gang.’

TOYOTA TALLIES TENNESSEE TROPHIES:  Since becoming a NASCAR manufacturer in 2004, Toyota has found success in all three of NASCAR’s national touring series.  Tennessee has been a state where Camry drivers have earned an abundant amount of success, including three NSCS victories at Bristol Motor Speedway.  Camry racers have also been victorious at three Tennessee tracks in the Nationwide Series — Bristol (one win), Memphis Motorsports Park (two wins) and Nashville Superspeedway (two wins).  Tundra drivers have earned a total of 12 first-place trophies in the ‘Volunteer State’ across three race tracks — Bristol (five wins), Memphis (two wins) and Nashville (two wins).

NOTES, QUOTES & NUMBERS NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS):  Since the start of the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for two top-five results, seven top-10 finishes and have led 66 laps … After three races, two Toyota drivers are in the top-10 in the NSCS point standings — Martin Truex Jr. (seventh) and Denny Hamlin (eighth) are both 18 points behind leader Tony Stewart … Kasey Kahne (13th), Kyle Busch (14th) and Bobby Labonte (15th) are also in the top-15 in the standings after three races … … Joey Logano became the youngest pole-winner (19 years old) in NSCS history last March at Bristol.

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&M’s Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing How satisfying was it to sweep all three races at Bristol last August? “It was pretty cool because when you come so close and then don’t get it, it’s pretty frustrating.  I mean, in 2009 we won the Truck race and were leading the Nationwide race and we crashed out, and then we ended up winning the Cup race.  So, it was probably a year delayed.  It was pretty special.  It was cool to be able to put it all together in a complete weekend, with the Truck, the Nationwide car and the Cup car.”

DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing What does it take to be successful at Bristol? “We’ve run well there, but we haven’t run as good as we wanted.  We ran second there last year.  We just have a good program for there.  Bristol is just like any other race track, you just need to stay out of trouble and sometimes it’s a little bit more difficult at Bristol to stay out of trouble than other race tracks.  In the end, we’ll try to be there at the end and make sure our car turns good.  Now, with the new surface you can run the top of the race track and the bottom.  Even if you are a little tight, you can get away with running the top and still make some pretty good ground.”

DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing (continued) What would it mean if you won a race at Bristol? “It would be amazing.  That place is just phenomenal.  The atmosphere is so charged with all the people that are there and the design of the place.  To win a race at Bristol — it would rank right up there with winning Daytona for me.”

MARTIN TRUEX JR., No. 56 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing How do you feel about the start of the season? “The potential is there for us all to have a great season and so we’re excited about that.  My engineer Chad Johnson and my crew chief Pat Tryson — everyone is just really doing a great job right now and we know some areas that we need to improve and everybody is working hard on those areas.  We just need to go out there and do all of the little things right and not make any mistakes.  If we can do that, we’ll just keep stacking up points and knocking on the door to victory lane.   I’m pretty excited.  It has been a great start to our season and everybody is doing so well.  The sky is the limit for this team.  It’s great that we’re getting to show it early in the season.”

BOBBY LABONTE, No. 47 Kingsford Toyota Camry, JTG-Daugherty Racing Are you looking forward to racing at Bristol? “Bristol is a great track — I love going there.  I’ve had some good runs and wadded a few up.  I feel confident in these guys — they had a good run there last year and the year before.  I’m looking forward to it.  Hopefully, that will fit our style with 500 laps there.  You have to be aggressive, but it’s a long race and I think the program for the team is really good.  I’d like to add my experience, hopefully that will help.”

NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS):  Since the start of the 2011 season, Toyota drivers have combined for one win, one top-five result, eight top-10 finishes and have led 351 laps … Kenny Wallace (eighth, -27) is the top Toyota driver in the NNS point standings … Brian Scott (11th), Steve Wallace (14th) and Michael Annett (15th) are also in the top-15 in the standings … Kyle Busch earned the first NNS win for a Camry at Bristol last August.

JASON RATCLIFF, crew chief, No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Can you continue the streak of leading all the laps in the race that the team began at Phoenix? “To try and keep that record intact, you’re probably not going to attempt it at Bristol.  I’ll be happy if we can just go there and run well with the new car and be in contention to maybe get a win.  To try to go there and think we could lead all the laps, I think we’d be kidding ourselves.  We’ve run well there the last two or three years with the old car.  Hopefully, we can just keep that momentum going.  Kyle (Busch) runs well there in the (Sprint) Cup car, so maybe some of their stuff will apply to the Nationwide car.”

What are the biggest differences between the old Nationwide Series car and the new car that will be used at Bristol? “The biggest thing we have to focus on is the difference between the splitter and the valence.  The splitter is a solid stop — you can’t go past it.  But, you want to get to it.  The valence — you wanted to get to it but, because of the material it was made of and the way it was designed, you had some flexibility there.  You could go a little beyond it — you could go short of it a little bit and be okay.  So, the splitter is probably the number one difference that requires us to shift our setup around. The second thing would be that this car has quite a bit more drag on it.  The third thing would probably be the approach you have to take, because the center of gravity is so much higher with these cars than it was with the old cars.  So, you have to take a different approach with the setup and a little bit of a different thought process to get things working for you.  The fourth thing, and the thing we’ll be focusing on heading into Bristol, is probably the brake package.  Because the center of gravity is higher and makes the car a little more difficult to turn, you have to slow it down a little bit more.” NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS):  Since the start of the 2011 NCWTS season, Tundra drivers have registered three wins, six top-five results, nine top-10 finishes and have led 215 laps … Seven Toyota drivers are currently in the top-15 in the NCWTS points after three of 25 races — Timothy Peters (third), Todd Bodine (seventh), Max Papis (ninth), Miguel Paludo (12th), David Starr (13th), Craig Goess (14th) and Justin Lofton (15th) … The NCWTS will enjoy two weeks off before returning to action on April 2 at Virginia’s Martinsville Speedway.

KASEY KAHNE, No. 18 Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports Was winning the goal for the Darlington race weekend? “I went to Darlington wanting to win — that was the plan.  This is a tough series.  These guys do an awesome job.  That restart with Todd (Bodine) near the end of the race — our truck was really good once I could get rolling.  He tried to get me all the way up to the wall and I think he got himself loose by trying to squish me into the wall.  We had a good run down the back and some good laps after that.  It was a solid run.  I have to thank Kyle Busch for letting me drive and the whole team.  The guys do such a good job and it was a lot of fun driving for them and working with Eric (Phillips, crew chief), Rick Ren (general manager) and all the guys.”

Kasey Kahne Bristol Quick Facts – Turner Motorsports

    · Kahne back in the seat of the No. 38 Great Clips Chevy at Bristol… This weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway, Kahne will make his second start of the season for Turner Motorsports in the No. 38 Chevrolet.

    · Bristol Motor Speedway, by the numbers… In 13 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at Bristol Motor Speedway, Kahne has one win, three top-five and three top-10 finishes to his credit. He has led a cumulative 131 laps at the famed half-mile track and has an average start of 15.2 and an average finish of 20.8. In the fall of 2007, Kahne fended off current Turner Motorsports teammate, Jason Leffler, to bring home the winner’s trophy.

    · Sparks flew in Kahne’s last trip to Bristol… Last fall in the No. 38 Great Clips machine, Kahne had one of the fastest cars on the track, storming from deep in the field into the top-10. His evening ended on lap 80 as contact with another competitor flipped him on his side and he slid around the turn three wall leaving an impressive shower of sparks behind him.

    · Who’s on the pit box? Stewart Cooper will call the shots for Kahne and serve as crew chief for the No. 38 Great Clips team in the eight races that he is behind the wheel.

    · Turner Motorsports has five chances to make it two in a row… Could Turner Motorsports make it two in a row this weekend? Following the team’s first NASCAR victory two weeks ago at Las Vegas with Mark Martin, Turner Motorsports will try to go for back-to-back wins this weekend. The team has five chances with Kahne (No. 38), Sorenson (No. 32), Allgaier (No. 31), Leffler (No. 30) and Buescher (No. 34), who is making his first NNS start of the 2011 season, all battling it out in Saturday’s Scott’s EZ Seed 300.

    · This week’s Impala… The No. 38 Great Clips team will hit the track with chassis TMS-113. This chassis last saw track time at Phoenix International Raceway, where Ryan Newman started sixth and finished fourth.

    · Start of a new era for Turner Motorsports… The 2011 season marks the start of a new era for Turner Motorsports. The team has expanded in 2011 from a two-truck operation in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) to become the largest stand-alone multi-series team in NASCAR’s top-tier touring series, fielding three entries in the NCWTS and four entries in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS). Three of the team’s regular NNS drivers (Jason Leffler, Reed Sorenson and Justin Allgaier) have been pegged as viable contenders to win the 2011 NNS driver championship.

    · Happy 10-Year Anniversary, Great Clips… This season marks Great Clips’ 10-year anniversary as a primary sponsor in the NNS. The Minneapolis-based Great Clips, Inc., which is currently the longest-running primary sponsor in the series, came onto the scene in 2001 as a primary sponsor of Akins Motorsports No. 38 entry, then driven by Christian Elder.

Due to how tight the track is, in addition to the steep banking, it’s really easy to lose speed there. Passing can be pretty difficult at times. A good handling car is important at a short-track like Bristol. You really have to work in practice to get the car where you want it for the race. Staying out of trouble is the key. I’ve been involved in accidents running in the back and I’ve gotten into accidents while running up front. Trouble can find you anywhere on this track, so that’s probably the biggest challenge when you go into a race at Bristol.

  • EARNHARDT RECEIVES DARLINGTON STRIPE EARLY ON

Jeffrey Earnhardt and Darlington Raceway got acquainted very fast this past weekend for the running of the Too Tough to Tame 200 on Saturday night.

Earnhardt wheeling the #1 Fuel Doctor Chevy struggled with the oldest track on the NASCAR circuit and was forced to a back up truck early after encountering the wall.

Earnhardt started 35th for the event as a provisional and ran the race like a veteran. With guidance from his spotter and crew chief to “Race the track and keep rolling through the center”, Jeffrey continued to increase his lap times as he climbed up to the 26th position on lap 40 after dodging spinning trucks for the first few cautions.

By lap 53, Earnhardt was beginning to run down competitors within his view and worked his way to the 24th position before another caution flew.

During the pit stop the Fuel Doctor crew added a spring rubber to the left rear and sent the rookie back out to battle.

The adjustment worked as he turned his fastest time on lap 66. Continuing to listen to his coaches, Jeffrey found a rhythm and was looking at cracking the Top 20 by lap 90.

With just 50 laps remaining, Earnhardt moved into the 19th position and steadily climbed further up the charts with his Fuel Doctor Chevy. A restart on lap 95 put the entire day in jeopardy when the #4 of Carmichael and #20 of Long got together just in front of Earnhardt and with a great move to the inside Jeffrey drove cleanly away and into the 15th position.

Earnhardt continued to move around the tricky Darlington track and turned his fastest lap with just 20 to go before the #22 of Coulter drove into the path of the Fuel Doctor Chevy entry and Earnhardt into the turn two wall.

The crew went to work to pull the fenders away from the tires and sent Earnhardt back to the track in the 20th position, on the lead lap.

As the checkered flag waved, Earnhardt finished 20th and held onto the 10th position in the point standings.

Brian Scott and No. 11 Shore Lodge Team – Bristol Motor Speedway Advance

Brian Scott No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota Scotts EZ Seed 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway

No. 11 Shore Lodge Team Notes of Interest

    ·   Brian Scott will make his fourth career Bristol Motor Speedway start this weekend in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Scotts EZ Seed 300 in Bristol, Tenn.

    ·   In three previous starts at the half-mile track, Scott’s best finish is 15th place. Scott earned his best Bristol finish during the last Nationwide Series race to take place at Bristol – last August’s rain-shortened event.

    ·   In addition to the three starts in the Nationwide Series, Scott has two Bristol starts in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Scott finished 19th in his first ever Bristol start in 2008 and followed that up one year later with a fifth-place run during the 2009 Truck Series race.

    ·   Chassis #116 is the car Scott will race this weekend in Bristol. The car is a brand new chassis for Joe Gibbs Racing. The backup car for this weekend is Chassis #106 which is also new for 2011. Chassis #106 was used at the test Scott participated in at the Walt Disney World Speedway in January and it has been the backup car for the last two Nationwide Series events.

    ·   The NASCAR Nationwide Series enjoyed an early off-weekend along with Sprint Cup Series teams last week. Scott took the time off to relax in Charleston, S.C.

How do you feel heading to Bristol this weekend? “Racing at Bristol is like a knife fight in a phone booth. It’s a race that really gets you going. People always talk about the top speeds we do at places like Daytona and Talladega where we hit 200 mph. But 200 mph at those places feels nothing like the 150 mph or so that we hit at Bristol. Bristol is one of the most physically demanding race tracks we visit.”

How do you grade the 2011 season so far for the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Team? “If I had to give us a grade it would probably be an average grade. Obviously it hasn’t been what we wanted but it’s not as bad as it could have been. We’ve been fast for the most part everywhere. We just haven’t really produced the finishes that we want. The finishes haven’t been as bad as the potential they had of being at both Phoenix and Las Vegas.

“There is a certain level of this that was to be expected coming into the new season with a new driver, new crew chief, new car – basically a new everything. There are a lot of unknowns so you have to plan for a little bit of that but the team has done a great job. We are looking forward to lowering the numbers in our finish column and start plugging away at this season.”

How much pressure do you put on yourself? “There is pressure in any professional sport. It’s the nature of the beast. You can’t be a competitor for a living and not deal with pressure. I love it. The more, higher intense pressure situations the better I seem to do and the more fun I have. I love competition. I love pressure. I love for things to be put in my lap and it being up to me to go out there and get the job done.”

No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet News and Notes

Sorenson Leading the Way – After three races in a still young 2011 season, Reed Sorenson finds himself on top of the Nationwide Series point standings. Even after a disappointing 11th-place finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Sorenson is ahead of second place Ricky Stenhouse Jr. by two points. Teammates Jason Leffler and Justin Allgaier are also in the top-five, ranking third and fifth respectively.

Sorenson At Bristol – In nine starts at the famed Bristol Motor Speedway, Sorenson owns one top-five and three top-10 finishes. His average start is 14.6 and average finish is 20.2.

Return to the Dollar General Chevy – Sorenson made his first 2011 start in the No. 30 Rexall Chevrolet two weeks ago in Las Vegas, but will make a return to the No. 32 Dollar General Chevy in Bristol. When the Nationwide Series heads west to Auto Club Speedway in two weeks, Sorenson will once again move to the No. 30 car as Mark Martin makes his second start in the No. 32.

Solid Start for No. 32 Dollar General Team – The No. 32 Dollar General team has put in three solid performances to start the 2011 season and is the only Nationwide Series team to have three top-five finishes to show for it. Sorenson locked in two fifth-place finishes in his two starts with Martin adding Turner Motorsports’ first win two weeks ago at Las Vegas.

Start of a new era for Turner Motorsports – The 2011 season marks the start of a new era for Turner Motorsports.

This Week’s Impala – Sorenson will pilot TMS-106 in this weekend’s Scott’s EZ Seed 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The No. 32 team raced this chassis in all four “new car” races last season (Daytona International Speedway, Michigan International Speedway, Richmond International Raceway and Charlotte Motor Speedway) where they recorded one top-five and three top-10 finishes with an average start of 17.5 and average finish of 10.5.

Sorenson on heading to Bristol this weekend with the No. 32 Dollar General team:

“Bristol is one of my favorite tracks that we go to on the circuit because it is just a fun place to race for us as drivers. In order to survive, you have to be focused and exercise a ton of patience. This No. 32 team has been on quite a roll to start the season and I’m excited to be back with them again this weekend to try and continue that trend. The win for Dollar General and Turner Motorsports in Las Vegas was a big deal and I know that we will all be working hard to try and repeat that.”

  • Ryan Truex, No. 99 Pastrana-Waltrip Toyota Bristol Preview

Ryan Truex, No. 99 Pastrana-Waltrip Toyota Bristol Preview

CORNELIUS, N.C. — No. 99 Pastrana-Waltrip Racing driver Ryan Truex has a big weekend planned at Bristol Motor Speedway. On Friday, he celebrates his 19th birthday then the two-time K&N East Series champion makes his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut Saturday on the world’s fastest half-mile. This weekend also marks Truex’s 10th start in the Nationwide Series. The rookie of the year points leader owns four top-15 finishes and has a starting average of 15.3.

    QUOTES

TRUEX ON RACING AT BRISTOL: “Bristol is a lot closer to what I am used to racing on. It’s a track where it is up to the driver to make things happen. At Bristol you have to get down to the nitty gritty and make things happen. I love short track racing. It’s going to be a physical race, but I am looking forward to the challenge. I think the four practices on Friday are going to help my confidence. We should be able to get a setup that feels really comfortable to me. The biggest thing is to stay out of the wrecks. I am pretty pumped for this weekend and I think we have a chance to score our first top-10 finish.”

ON FIRST NINE STARTS IN THE NATIONWIDE SERIES: “It has been a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be. I had a lot of success in the K&N Series but these cars seem to drive a lot different. There is also a tremendous amount of talent in this series. I mean we race against some of the best Cup Series stars. There is also a lot of young talent like Trevor Bayne, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Justin Allgaier. I just have to remember all these guys have a lot more seat time then I do. I think I have progressed each weekend. I just get a little frustrated with myself when I am not running up front every weekend like I did in the East Series.”

CREW CHIEF JERRY BAXTER ON TRUEX’S PROGRESSION: “Ryan has progressed a tremendous amount since last season. His communication and confidence has done a 180. He is way more confident in telling me what type of adjustments he wants on the car. I think his brother (Martin Truex Jr.) has helped that progression. At Vegas Martin was on the roof and really helped Ryan find better lines on the race track. He also helped communicate to me what Ryan was feeling in the race car. At the middle point of the Vegas race we were a top 10 car. We just need to work on getting our car better at the start of the race so we don’t get ourselves so far behind. However, I think Ryan has made great strides in just nine races.”
