Hill ready for Nationwide Series debut Looking to follow in former Champs footsteps

When Timmy Hill watched Trevor Bayne win the Daytona 500 this past Sunday, a grin came across his face.  Hill, the 2009 Allison Legacy Series Champion knows that his career in NASCAR is following Bayne’s very closely.

“Trevor won his Championship in the Allison Legacy Series in 2005 and in just a few short years, he is on top of the racing world after winning the Daytona 500.  Timmy has the same aspirations and determination as Trevor and it says a lot about the strength of the Legacy Series,” stated Dave Mitchell, Vice-President of Rick Ware Racing.

Hill will take to the Phoenix International Raceway on his 18th birthday, Thursday in preparation for the Bashas Supermarket 200.

Hill is following in the footsteps of Brian Vickers and Trevor Bayne from the Allison Legacy Series but looks to make his own path to the top ranks.

“The kid has put in a lot of time and effort to become a NASCAR driver. His hard work will begin to show dividends this weekend,” stated Mitchell.

Timmy will start his campaign for the NASCAR Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year and run the remainder of the season in the #15 Ford Mustang of Rick Ware Racing.  Hill will pilot the Fuel Doctor USA colors at Phoenix as he did all of 2010 in the ARCA, NASCAR K&N East and West Series’ .

“I love running for Fuel Doctor USA.  They have been behind me all last year and it’s an honor to have them on my NASCAR Nationwide Series debut.  Fuel Doctor is dedicated to changing the future in fuel efficiency and being environmentally friendly, things we can all relate to and to carry the banner for them again is awesome,” stated Hill.

Timmy will take the wheel of the #15 Fuel Doctor Mustang for the running of the Bashas Supermarket 200 on Saturday February 26th at 5pm EST on ESPN2. For more information visit www.wareracing.com or you can also follow the team on Twitter at @rickwareracing.

In addition to winning as individuals, the students have the opportunity to win for their school. The winning school will be announced Friday, April 8.

No. 31 Brandt Monterey Ag Resources Chevrolet News and Notes

. Flying the BRANDT Monterey AgResources colors at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR). The neon red No. 31 Chevy will sport a new name this weekend at PIR, BRANDT Monterey AgResources. Monterey AgResources was founded to provide products and services for the crop protection and animal feed industries in Western United States. Their acquisition of Monterey AgResources in 2010 gave BRANDT Consolidated coast-to-coast representation, cementing the organization as a leader in the agriculture industry.

. Allgaier at PIR. The 24-year-old Nationwide Series young gun has five starts at PIR. He is credited with two top-10 finishes and has an average finishing position of 11.2. He has an average starting position of 16.6, with his best start of third coming in the November 2010 event.

. This week’s Impala. The BRANDT Monterey AgResources team will hit the track with chassis TMS-114 this weekend in Phoenix. Chassis TMS-114 is a newly built chassis and PIR marks its first appearance on the race track.

. Start of a new era for Turner Motorsports. The 2011 season marks the start of a new era for Turner Motorsports. The team has expanded in 2011 from a two-truck operation in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) to become the largest stand-alone multi-series team in NASCAR’s top-tier touring series, fielding three entries in the NCWTS and four entries in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS). Three of the team’s regular NNS drivers (Jason Leffler, Reed Sorenson and Justin Allgaier) have been pegged as viable contenders to win the 2011 NNS driver championship

Justin Allgaier on Phoenix International Raceway

“I really, really like racing at Phoenix. This is going to be the last time we race on this surface and I think that it would be really cool to get the last win here,” Allgaier said. “I feel like my team worked really well together in Daytona and we are all ready to get to Phoenix and show how good this No. 31 BRANDT Monterey AgResources team is. I think it would be really cool if we could get the last win on the old surface and the first win on the new surface. We are hoping to get started on that goal this weekend!”

    The Headlines.

Rusty Wallace Racing’s Michael Annett will pilot the No. 62 Pilot Flying J Toyota Camry for the second race of the season at Phoenix International Raceway this weekend. Saturday’s Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 will be Annett’s fifth Nationwide Series start on Phoenix International Raceway’s sunny one mile tri-oval. The 24-year-old driver has also competed at Phoenix International Raceway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and USAC Silver Crown Series.

During the off-season, both Rusty Wallace Racing Nationwide Series teams completed a two-day test at Walt Disney World Speedway. While Phoenix International Raceway isn’t like any other track on the circuit, Annett credits that the team’s test will help them heading into this weekend’s event.

This weekend’s racing festivities mark a change in NASCAR’s schedule. In years past, the sanctioning body’s top-three series have raced at Auto Club Speedway for the second event of the season. Still competing on the west coast, the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series’ will race at Phoenix International Raceway in February rather than April. In addition to this weekend’s events, Phoenix International raceway will host their traditional NASCAR weekend in November leading into the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

    From the Cockpit.

Annett on Saturday’s race at Phoenix International Raceway:

“Phoenix is a tough track and one thing that makes it that way is that each end of the track is different. Turns one and two are very different than turns three and four. I think one thing that will help us with this weekend’s race is our recent test at Walt Disney World Speedway. Our primary car for Phoenix is the one we tested at Disney. We learned a lot there that we can transition into practice and the race this week when we get to Phoenix.”

    Annett on his new team:

“I couldn’t be happier with the group that’s been assembled for the No. 62 Pilot Flying J team this year. We all work really well together, and I think that will play a big role in where we finish in the 2011 championship points race. We showed our strength last week at Daytona, but our finish didn’t reflect that. I’m very excited to prove ourselves. There are definitely good things to come with our organization this season.”

The plan is to win this last race on this racing surface before they overhaul it.”

Crew chief Mike Beam on racing at Phoenix International Raceway:

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., No. 6 Blackwell Angus Ford Mustang: WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD SEASON FOR YOU? “The way we ended last year I feel like we can run top-10 every week. I feel like we can contend for a championship but definitely we have to go one race at a time and really not worry about the championship until it come down to it. I feel like realistically we can be in the top-10 in points for sure, no questions asked.”

Mike Kelley, Crew Chief, No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford Mustang: HOW MUCH DIFFERENT IS THIS RACE GOING TO BE THAN LAST YEAR? “A lot of scenarios are different. We’re taking a new-style race car to a track that we haven’t got to test at or race at yet. We’re really fortunate here at Roush to have the notes from Carl’s [Edwards] Cup car that won the race out there in the fall. I think we’re going there with a good baseline. Ricky really excelled in this car last year.”

  • Joey Logano / No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota Preview – Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway

Joey Logano / No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota Preview – Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway

Joey Logano / No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota Preview

Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway

No. 20 Sport Clips Toyota News & Notes:

. THE FIRST OF FIVE FOR SPORT CLIPS: In what is becoming quite the good look for Joey Logano, hair-care franchise Sport Clips will ride along as the primary sponsor on the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. The Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 is the first of five events Sport Clips will adorn the side of the No. 20 Nationwide ride in 2011. Sport Clips is a national sport-themed hair-care franchise for men and boys that can be found in 36 states. Founded in 1995, the company has over 750 stores nationwide. Sport Clips will also be the primary sponsor on the No. 20 at Richmond International Raceway in April (with Denny Hamlin driving), Daytona International Speedway in July (with Logano), Chicagoland Speedway in September (Logano) and at Dover International Speedway in October (Logano). In addition, Sport Clips will also sponsor the No. 11 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series ride for Hamlin at Darlington Raceway on May 7th.

. LOGANO WANTS TO MAKE IT TWO-IN-A-ROW: The last time Joey Logano was behind the wheel of the No. 20 Toyota with Sport Clips as a sponsor, Logano delivered the goods. Logano gave Sport Clips its first NASCAR Nationwide Series victory last season at Kansas Speedway after winning from the pole and leading 18 laps, earning Logano his eighth-career NASCAR Nationwide Series victory in the process.

. A NEW SEASON, A FAMILIAR START FOR LOGANO: Joey took part in the season-opener for the NASCAR Nationwide Series on Saturday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway, bringing the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota home in the 12th position. However, Joey’s finish was not indicative of his race-long performance. Logano started sixth and quickly worked his way into the lead by lap two. Overall, Logano led on 10 different occasions for 22 laps and was in contention for the win, racing into the lead with JGR teammate Kyle Busch on the white flag lap, when the two got together and Logano hit the outside wall, forcing him to slow and limp across the line in 12th.

. CALLING HOME. WITH HELP FROM SPORT CLIPS AND LOGANO: When the pride of America, those active duty military and hospitalized veterans, look to call home for free on Sunday, February 27, they’ll have the voice of Sport Clips Racing driver Joey Logano thanking our military for their service. Logano recently recorded a greeting on behalf of Sport Clips that troops will hear when they make a free phone call home as part of the VFW Operation Uplink Free Call Day program. Over the past 4 years, Sport Clips has raised over $850,000 to support the VFW Operation Uplink Free Call Day program through our Help A Hero annual fundraiser. Working through MWR SPAWAR internet cafes around the world, VFW Operation Uplink has provided over 3,000,000 connections through 36 free call days. Made available through the internet cafes, “free call days” are growing in popularity; Operation Uplink is averaging more than one million minutes of free talk time on each “Free Call Day” at over 860 internet cafes. Each scheduled free call day is now posted on VFW Facebook under the events tab.

. JOEY NOT THE ONLY DOUBLE-DUTY GUY ON THE No. 20 TEAM: Joey Logano is scheduled to race in 21 NASCAR Nationwide Series events in 2011. And on each of those weekends, the youngster will pull double-duty, competing in both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series events on the same weekend at the same track. However, Logano isn’t the only member of the No. 20 Sport Clips team that pulls double-duty on any given weekend. In fact, the entire over-the-wall team that pits the Sport Clips Toyota also serves as Logano’s over-the-wall team for his No. 20 Hope Depot Toyota in the Sprint Cup Series. The switch to use Logano’s Cup over-the-wall team was made during the off-season in hopes of not only improving the pit stops for the No. 20 team, but to also give the Sprint Cup team even more practice in a “live action” setting.

. AFTER FOUR RACES, PHOENIX STILL HASN’T PAID UP: Phoenix International Raceway and Joey Logano get along, as is evident by the stats. In four races, Logano has a third, a fourth and two 10th-place finishes. He won the pole at the track in November of last season and has led 44 laps at the tracks over the years. But Logano still feels like the track owes him one after last April’s race at the one-mile oval. Logano found himself in the lead with just 10 laps to go. However, contact on pit road with Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch caused damage to Logano’s No. 20 Toyota and resulted in Logano falling from first to an eventual 10th-place finish over the race’s final laps.

. STAT OF THE WEEK: 81%. In 67 career starts in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, Logano has finished inside the top-10 an amazing 54 times, giving him a top-10 percentage of 82-percent.

. THE RACE: The Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway (Avondale, AZ; 1-mile tri-oval) is set for Saturday, February 26, 2011. The race will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 5:30 p.m. EST, with radio coverage on MRN starting at 5 p.m. EST.

    Joey Logano Quotes:

“I’ve always been a big fan of Phoenix. The track is really unique and unlike really any other place we go to on the circuit. Plus, I’ve always had a fast car there and ran really well. Unfortunately, we just don’t have the finishes to show for it. The last two races at the track we’ve had a Toyota that was fast enough to win the race, but things happened that prevented us from doing so. So this time, I’m determined to go out there and get a win.

“It would also be pretty cool to win the final Nationwide Series race at this track with its current configuration. I guess they are going to repave the place and add more progressive banking and move the dogleg back a little bit after the Nationwide and Cup races this weekend. I’m really glad to see they aren’t going to really change the track, just move it around. The dogleg on the backstretch is one of the things about this place that really gives it some character.

“I’m also pumped about Sport Clips being back on the car. The last time we raced the Sport Clips Toyota, we were celebrating in Victory Lane at Kansas. So it’s cool to have them back and hopefully, we can make it two wins in a row for them. Sport Clips is a great sponsor and they do a lot to make their NASCAR programs work and stand out. Plus, the car is one of the best looking on the track. So this could be a big weekend for us all around.”

    Adam Stevens Quotes:

“Phoenix is a one-of-a-kind place. Even though I’ve never been a driver in one of these types of cars at this place, I can tell you that it is a driver’s racetrack. This is one of those tracks that is very sensitive to over-driving and always hitting the right line. So, that puts even more emphasis in the driver’s hand, but makes it even more important as a crew chief to make sure you get the setup right. If the setup is right and the car is comfortable, the driver is going to make fewer mistakes and be able to hit their marks with ease each and every lap.

“The other thing that sticks out about Phoenix is that tires are huge here and play a big role. That is the way it’s been in the past. And of course, this is going to be the first race with the new car here, so things will be a little different, but I don’t think it will change how important tires are. I’m hoping my Cup experience here at Phoenix will apply and give us a leg up when it comes to raceday.”

    No. 38 Great Clips Impala

    Phoenix International Raceway

    Bashas Supermarkets 200

    February 26, 2010

No. 38 Great Clips Chevrolet News and Notes

. Leffler back in the No. 38 Great Clips Impala at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR). This weekend, Long Beach, Calif.-native, Jason Leffler, will climb back behind the wheel of the No. 38 Great Clips machine, the car he has piloted since 2006. Leffler is splitting his time in the No. 38 this season with Kasey Kahne, who is slated to drive the car for eight events throughout the season. Not to worry though! Leffler will be able to continue his quest for the championship by rounding out a complete schedule in Turner Motorsports’ No. 30 entry.

. Strong start to the 2011 season. Last weekend, Leffler tied his career-best NNS finish of sixth at Daytona International Speedway. The solid finish puts he and teammate, Reed Sorenson, sitting first and second in the point standings of those drivers currently eligible to win the championship.

. Leffler always a solid contender at PIR. In 13 Nationwide Series starts at the Avondale, Ariz.-based track, Leffler has captured two poles (2000 and 2006), two top-five (2nd in 2000 and 2009) and four top-ten finishes. He has finished outside the top-20 on only three occasions and has led for a total of 121 laps.

. Leffler knows his way to PIR’s Victory Lane. In his USAC racing days, Leffler visited PIR’s victory lane on two occasions. He won the Midget race in 1999 and the Silver Crown feature in 2000. Prior to making the transition to stock cars, Leffler experienced tremendous success in the open wheel ranks, becoming the first driver in 37 years to win three consecutive USAC Midget National titles. In addition, he won the Silver Crown National Championship in 1998, his rookie year in the series.

. This week’s Impala. Leffler will pilot TMS-115 in this weekend’s Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. This race will be the maiden voyage for this chassis, as it has yet to see on-track action.

. Who’s on the pit box? Eddie Pardue is Leffler’s right-hand man and will call the shots for the championship-contending driver in 2011. Pardue and crew will remain with Leffler, no matter if he is piloting the No. 38 or No. 30 Impala.

Three of the team’s regular NNS drivers (Jason Leffler, Reed Sorenson and Justin Allgaier) have been pegged as viable contenders to win the 2011 NNS driver championship.

. Happy 10-Year Anniversary, Great Clips. This season marks Great Clips’ 10-year anniversary as a primary sponsor in the NNS. The Minneapolis-based Great Clips, Inc., which is currently the longest-running primary sponsor in the series, came onto the scene in 2001 as a primary sponsor of Akins Motorsports No. 38 entry, then driven by Christian Elder.

. Leffler on SIRIUS’ Morning Drive every Wednesday. Don’t forget to tune in to SIRIUS Radio’s “Morning Drive” with Mike Bagley and Pete Pistone every Wednesday at 10:30am to hear Leffler’s take on recent events in the Nationwide Series and what you can expect from the week’s upcoming race.

Jason Leffler on Phoenix International Raceway

“Phoenix is pretty much my favorite track on the NASCAR circuit. I spent a lot of time out there as a kid and ran the Copper Classic for a number of years. It’s a slick, old race track and unique in that both ends are so different and the surface is so worn out. You slide around a lot but I really like having to drive that way. After this race, they are making some changes to the track and I have mixed feelings about that because I really love racing here. This is a place we have always been pretty strong at and we have come close on a couple of occasions to getting the win but came up short. Coming back with Turner Motorsports, with top of the line equipment and Hendrick horsepower, I feel good about our chances to get the Great Clips Chevy back into victory lane!”

. Dollar General Racing welcomes Ryan Newman aboard. Turner Motorsports and Dollar General Racing are pleased to announce the addition of Ryan Newman to their 2011 all-star driver line-up. Newman is set to pilot the No. 30 Dollar General Chevrolet Impala in this weekend’s event at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR). In 62 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) starts, the Sprint Cup Series star boasts seven wins, 17 top-five and 34 top-10 finishes. . Twice the excitement. Newman will join his Turner Motorsports teammate, Reed Sorenson, in sporting Dollar General’s yellow and black colors this weekend at PIR. Newman’s No. 30 Impala will switch up the traditional yellow and black scheme for a reverse black and yellow one.

. By the numbers: PIR.Newman has made one NNS start at PIR where he finished 36 after leading four laps. In 17 Sprint Cup Series events at the track, he is credited with one win (April, 2010) and four pole awards.

. One-Mile success.Though he has only one NNS start at PIR, Newman has eight Nationwide Series starts at one-mile tracks. In those eight events he has accumulated one win, two pole awards, two top-five and three top-10 finishes.

. Calling the shots. Veteran crew chief Stewart Cooper will be leading the No. 30 Dollar General team this weekend at PIR. In addition to his time with the No. 30 car, Cooper calls the shots for Kasey Kahne when he pilots the No. 38 Chevy for Turner Motorsports.

Three of the team’s regular NNS drivers (Jason Leffler, Reed Sorenson and Justin Allgaier) have been pegged as viable contenders to win the 2011 NNS driver championship.

. This week’s Impala. In this weekend’s event at PIR, the No. 30 Dollar General team will hit the track with chassis number TMS-113. Chassis TMS-113 is a newly built chassis and has never seen the race track.

Ryan Newman on racing at Phoenix with Turner Motorsports

“I’m looking forward to getting in a Nationwide car again and being associated with Turner Motorsports,” said Newman. “My Cup debut was at Phoenix back in 2000, so I enjoy racing there, but going around there has its moments. Both ends of the track are totally different, and it seems almost impossible to get both ends to work perfectly. I like a challenge – it keeps me on my toes. Hopefully it will be a fun night of racing.”

. Looking to Build on Momentum – Reed Sorenson and the No. 32 Dollar General team had a successful Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway scoring a top-five finish in the 2011 season-opener. The fifth-place finish was Sorenson’s first top-five and career-best finish at the 2.5-mile superspeedway. The finish also catapulted Sorenson to second in the NASCAR Nationwide Series championship point standings.

. Seeing Double with Dollar General – This weekend’s race at Phoenix International Raceway will feature two Dollar General Chevys from the Turner Motorsports stable. Sorenson will be in the usual No. 32 bright yellow Dollar General Chevy, and teammate Ryan Newman will be in a second Dollar General car featuring a reverse yellow on black paint scheme. The start will mark Newman’s first for both Turner Motorsports and Dollar General.

. Sorenson at Phoenix International Raceway – Sorenson and team are excited to head out west to the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway. In seven starts, Sorenson has posted three top-five and five top-10 finishes, with an average start of 11.0 and average finish of 9.9. His career-best was a runner-up finish in 2006 after leading a lap.

. Mile-Track Success – Throughout his Nationwide Series career, Sorenson has excelled at tracks measuring one mile in length. At mile-tracks currently on the NASCAR circuit (Dover International Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Phoenix International Raceway) Sorenson owns 20 starts with eight top-fives and 15 top-10s.

. Start of a new era for Turner Motorsports – The 2011 season marks the start of a new era for Turner Motorsports. Three of the team’s regular NNS drivers (Jason Leffler, Reed Sorenson and Justin Allgaier) have been pegged as viable contenders to win the 2011 NNS driver championship.

. This Week’s Impala – Sorenson will pilot TMS-115 in this weekend’s Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. This race will be the maiden voyage for this chassis, as it has yet to see on-track action.

    .

Sorenson on the start of his season and heading to Phoenix

“We had an awesome start to the season for this whole Dollar General team. To come away from Daytona with a top-five and holding the second spot in the championship points is a pretty cool thing. We just need to ride that wave of momentum into Phoenix and keep it going. My Turner teammates and I have done pretty well at these mile tracks and so I’m excited to see what we can do out there. I feel like we proved last weekend that we have all the tools to be successful and now we just need to get that win. It’d be great to get all these Dollar General folks to victory lane.”

Sorenson on having Ryan Newman as a teammate

“I think having Ryan come down and race in the Nationwide Series for Turner Motorsports is a great thing for this team. Not only do you have a guy of his caliber to bounce ideas off of and chat with in the garage, but it’s awesome to have two Dollar General cars on the track at once! He has been successful at Phoenix and I’m hopeful that can translate over to our race this weekend.”
