Danica Patrick NASCAR Nationwide Season Begins on a High Note

Danicamania is back!  JR Motorsports driver Danica Patrick started from a career-best qualifying position of fourth, and earned a career-best finish of 14th at the Drive4COPD 300 on Saturday.

[media-credit name=”David Yeazell” align=”alignright” width=”218″][/media-credit]Patrick managed to maintain a Top 10 position without a tandem drafting partner for the first quarter of the race.  She finally found a drafting partner in Clint Bowyer.  He propelled her past four cars to take the race lead on lap 31, making her the first woman to ever lead a NASCAR lap at Daytona.

When Bowyer’s engine became hot, Patrick bobbled her car and was unable to reconnect.  She then slipped to ninth place.  Bowyer, slipping even further to 18th, blamed Patrick’s spotter for poor communication.  Patrick admits that she wasn’t sure how to make pushing others work all that well yet.

In a spectacular finish, Tony Stewart went on to win the race by a narrow seven one thousands of a second margin over Bowyer.

Patrick, a lap down, was quite pleased with her first Top 15 finish.  “It was a good experience, there was a lot to learn and I did learn a lot,” she said.

Car owner Dale Earnhardt Jr., praised her run by saying ” I think she was just doing whatever she felt was necessary to get to the end of the race and see if she had a shot.  I think she did a good job.”

Patrick is scheduled to run a limited 14 race schedule for 2011.  Her next race will be at Phoenix Motor Speedway

DOLLAR GENERAL PROVIDING TWICE THE EXCITEMENT AT PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

Ryan Newman joins Reed Sorenson in the iconic yellow and black colors for the upcoming NASCAR Nationwide Series Race

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (February 21, 2011) – Turner Motorsports is pleased to announce the addition of veteran driver, Ryan Newman, to this season’s driver line-up. Newman will pilot the No. 30 Dollar General Chevrolet in the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway on February 26. The No. 30 will feature a reverse yellow on black paint scheme to compliment the No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet driven by teammate Reed Sorenson.

“I’m looking forward to getting in a Nationwide car again and being associated with Turner Motorsports,” said Newman. “My Cup debut was at Phoenix back in 2000, so I enjoy racing there, but going around there has its moments. Both ends of the track are totally different, and it seems almost impossible to get both ends to work perfectly. I like a challenge – it keeps me on my toes. Hopefully it will be a fun night of racing.”

The Phoenix start marks Newman’s first with Turner Motorsports and Dollar General, but he is no stranger to the Nationwide Series. In 62 starts, Newman has seven wins, 17 top-fives, 34 top-10s and 12 pole awards, which translates into a top-10 finish in over half of his starts. The South Bend, Ind.-native has one previous Nationwide Series start at Phoenix International Raceway.

“My association with Turner Motorsports is new this year and I’m looking forward to getting to know the crew,” Newman added. “I know Dollar General will have a lot of customers in the stands watching. I just hope to give them a good show.”

The No. 30 Dollar General team will be led by veteran crew chief Stewart Cooper.

RCR Post Race Report — Daytona 500 and NextEra Energy Resources 250

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

    RACE: Daytona 500

    TRACK: Daytona International Speedway

    DATE: February 20, 2011

    Race Highlights:

RCR drivers finished ninth (Paul Menard), 17th (Clint Bowyer), 36th (Jeff Burton) and 42nd (Kevin Harvick) in the 2011 Daytona 500

RCR drivers led a total of 19 times for a combined 52 laps – 31 (Bowyer), 11 (Menard), five (Burton) and five (Harvick)

Menard earned his best career finish to date of ninth

Bowyer posted the best average running position of 8.6

The last time Burton wasn’t running at the end of the Great American Race was in 2004

Harvick suffered his first DNF due to an engine failure since September 2006, a span of 152 races

The event produced a race-record 74 lead changes among 22 drivers

16 cautions for a total of 60 laps were produced

Trevor Bayne claimed the win with Carl Edwards, David Gilliland, Bobby Labonte and Kurt Busch rounding out the top five

Bayne also earned the honors of being the youngest Daytona 500 winner (20 years and one day)

Paul Menard and the No. 27 PEAK/Menards Team Collect Top-10 Honors in Daytona 500

Richard Childress Racing’s newest team showcased their talents at Daytona International Speedway and proved that they intend to be a force to be reckoned with by demonstrating a solid performance and bringing home a ninth-place finish in the 2011 Daytona 500. Menard lined up the No. 27 PEAK/Menards Chevrolet in the 19th position to kick off the “Great American Race.” With the first 11 laps slowed for two cautions, forward progress for the PEAK Impala was difficult; however, following the second yellow flag, the Eau Claire, Wis., native found a drafting partner in Tony Stewart and the pair powered their Chevrolets to the front, taking the lead for the first time on lap 18. Menard remained inside the top 10 while drafting with a number of different drivers for the next 60 laps, falling out only once after a four-tire pit stop on lap 33. He found himself in the lead again on lap 37 while working with RCR teammate Clint Bowyer, and again on lap 52. Following a lap-77 visit to pit road while under the seventh caution of the afternoon, Menard was separated from his recent successful drafting partner and was shuffled backwards. Near the halfway point, he was reunited with Bowyer and the pair powered forward once again. Proving they were a forceful combination, they charged into the lead once again. Following the lap-182 caution, spotters scrambled to negotiate who-was-drafting-with-who for the final shootout. Separated from his teammate and without a solid dancing partner to work with, Menard found himself slipping out of the top 10. His position allowed him to navigate around a late-race incident that collected the front-running cars and set the stage for a green-white-checkered finish. In the final laps, Menard powered his No. 27 PEAK/Menards Chevrolet to a top-10 finish in the season opener.

    Start – 19th Finish – 9th Laps Led – 11 Points – 8th

    PAUL MENARD QUOTE:

“We had a really strong PEAK/Menards Chevrolet at Daytona. The guys have worked incredibly hard to prepare for this season and I think we have showed that since we’ve been down here. We were keeping a close eye on our temperatures after the (No.) 29 and (No.) 31 had engine problems. We ran a solid race and kept out of trouble. We ran well with Clint (Bowyer) and were able to lead laps today – just not the most important lap. The key was finding the right drafting partner, someone who had a strong car and who could work with you, swapping spots to keep the temperatures down. We had a several great drafting partners today; we just didn’t have that combination to keep us in the front at the end. I’m still very proud of our finish and look forward to the season with the No. 27 guys and my RCR teammates.”

Early Engine Failure Cuts Daytona 500 Short for Harvick, Budweiser Team

Kevin Harvick and the No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet team finished 42nd in the 53rd running of the Daytona 500 after an engine failure ended their day on lap 22. Prior to the engine problem, Harvick led twice for a total of five laps and had worked his way back into the top 15 after the team’s first pit stop at lap 12. The engine failure was the team’s first since September 2006 which occurred at Dover International Speedway, a span of 152 races.

    Start – 9th Finish – 42nd Laps Led – 5 Points – 37th

    KEVIN HARVICK QUOTE:

“Obviously, you come to the first race of the year and to have that happen right off the bat is just something you don’t really want to have happen and it’s just one of those things. We go years and years without engine failures and they (Earnhardt Childress Racing Engines) do a great job on that. So, it happens. The oil temperature was 10 – 15 degrees more than what we had been (running). I pulled out from behind the No. 17 (Matt Kenseth) when I felt like I got to the point where I needed to pull out, and the bottom fell out of it. I hate it for everybody on this Budweiser Chevrolet team and everybody from Jimmy Johns and Budweiser. It’s a tough way to start the year, but man, we never blow motors. Everybody at ECR does a great job.”

Rare Occurrence in Blown Engine Results in 36th-Place Finish for Burton, Cat Racing Team in Daytona 500

Jeff Burton and the No. 31 Caterpillar team showcased a strong performance in the first half of the 53rd running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, but eight laps shy of the race’s halfway mark, the engine expired in the extremely fast black and yellow machine that relegated the team to a 36th-place result. At the drop of the green flag, Burton and Richard Childress Racing teammate Clint Bowyer picked up where they left off from Thursday’s Duel 150 event, choosing each other as their dancing partner for much of the showdown’s first 92 laps. For the most part, they competed in the top 10, avoided multiple incidents and only dropped to as low as 24th the entire time. Burton led on two different occasions for a total of five laps on the 66th, 67th and 75th – 77th circuits before retiring the RCR entry to the garage 16 laps later when the engine broke – a rare occurrence that last happened in October 2007 at Talladega Superspeedway.

    Start – 4th Finish – 36th Laps Led – 5 Points – 32nd

    JEFF BURTON QUOTE:

“We are asking a lot out of the engines here for sure. These are tough situations. To run at all, you have to run them 240 (degrees) or so and that may be a little more than we need to be running. We thought we were well within our limits, but maybe not. But listen, I’m proud of everybody. This whole Cat Racing team busted their butt to come down here and put their best foot forward. We ran well all week and I am proud of everybody. I’m disappointed – exceptionally disappointed. But, I’m not going to hang my head. The effort was too good to be disappointed about.”

No. 33 Team Salvages 17th-Place Finish after Late-Race Incident at Daytona

After leading 11 times for 31 laps and being involved in a late-race incident with only four laps remaining, Clint Bowyer and the No. 33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Chevrolet team salvaged a 17th-place finish in the 53rd running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. Rolling off the starting grid in the sixth position, Bowyer immediately hooked up with Richard Childress Racing teammate Jeff Burton and the two drivers found themselves a mainstay in the top 10 for the first part of the “Great American Race” until the caution flag flew on lap 29 for the infamous “big one”. Bowyer and Burton were then joined by RCR stablemate Paul Menard, who pushed Bowyer to lead his first lap of the day. The three RCR Chevrolets continued to run up front until Burton’s car retired near the halfway point after suffering engine problems. After that, Bowyer and Menard stayed close together in the running order and bounced throughout the top 15 until finally finding the right combination and working their way through the field, where the Emporia, Kan., native led a majority of laps. The two drivers were separated on the track and shuffled back throughout the field joining other competitors in three-wide packs. Bowyer worked his way back to the front with the help of the No. 18 car and, with only four laps to go, made a move on the outside for the lead while running third. However, contact between three cars in the inside lane caused a massive pileup on the backstretch of the 2.5-mile superspeedway, severely damaging the No. 33 car and eliminating any chances of bringing home the 2011 Harley J. Earl trophy. The Helping Hands pit crew managed to repair the car and get it back out for the last three laps of the event without losing a lap to the leaders, salvaging a 17th-place finish.

    Start – 6th Finish – 17th Laps Led – 31 Points – 15th

    CLINT BOWYER QUOTE:

“What can you say? It was just one of those racing deals. We had one of the best cars out there today and got caught up in someone else’s mess. To tell you the truth, I still don’t know what happened. It was all so fast. Shane (Wilson, crew chief) called a great race today and, once again, we were right there at the end.”

    NASCAR Camping World Truck Series

    RACE: NextEra Energy Resources 250

    TRACK: Daytona International Speedway

    DATE: February 18, 2011

    Race Highlights:

Austin Dillon led the field to the green flag after earning his eighth career pole award on Thursday evening.

Dillon’s No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet did not fall outside of the top five until an incident with just four laps remaining ended the team’s night early.

Joey Coulter started eighth in his first NASCAR national touring series start and, along with Dillon (pole), was one of nine Chevrolets to start the race in the top-10.

RCR teammates finished 20th (Dillon) and 34th (Coulter).

Michael Waltrip earned his first NCWTS victory and became the 22nd driver to post wins in all three of NASCAR’s national touring series. He was followed to the finish line by Elliott Sadler, Clay Rogers, Miguel Paludo and Kyle Busch.

The next NCWTS race is a 150-miler at Phoenix International Raceway on Friday, February 25th, televised live on SPEED and broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and Sirius XM Satellite Radio beginning at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard

Late Race Multi-Car Incident Spoils Austin Dillon’s Shot at Daytona Victory

Austin Dillon and the Danny Stockman-led No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet Team showcased the strength of Richard Childress Racing’s NCWTS program on Friday night at Daytona by earning the pole award and battling within the top three for much of the 250-mile race. Unfortunately, a late-race incident effectively eliminated any chances of finding Victory Lane and relegated the team to a disappointing 20th-place finish. Dillon was scored in the third position on lap 98 of 100 when a multi-car incident broke out just behind him. Another competitor made contact with the left-rear fender of the No. 3 Chevrolet and Dillon was turned into the outside retaining wall in the tri-oval. The 10-car incident left Dillon’s Chevrolet damaged beyond repair and brought out the red flag for just over 10 minutes. When racing resumed with just four laps remaining, Dillon was unable to continue and finished 20th.

    Start – First Finish – 20th Points Position – 16th Laps Led – 0

    AUSTIN DILLON QUOTE:

“I felt like we were in the position we needed to be in. I had already been talking to (spotter) Andy (Houston) about what we were going to have to do on the white-flag lap. We were sitting third, and I felt like that was the spot to be in. It was just a struggle there at the end. I mean, it happens. It’s Daytona. I’m really upset for all these No. 3 fans.”

Blown Tire Relegates Coulter, No. 22 Team to 34th-Place Result at Daytona

Joey Coulter and the No. 22 RCR team showcased a strong Chevrolet Silverado in the opening laps of the NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona International Speedway, but an unexpected right-front blown tire just 37 laps in forced the Harold Holly-led crew to head to the garage and make repairs, resulting in a 34th-place finish. After rolling off the starting grid from the outside of row four, the Miami Springs, Fla., native flexed his rookie patience and held his own inside the top 15 in the opening 10 laps. He soon found himself boxed in behind a slower truck, and with nowhere to go, dropped to as low as 22nd on lap 12 before drafting his way back toward the front of the field. A brief fuel-only stint on pit road on lap 31 returned the Rookie-of-the-Year contender to eighth on the board. While running 13th in the draft six laps later, an unanticipated occurrence in the form of a blown tire directed the No. 22 RCR Chevrolet to the outer retaining wall, causing heavy damage to the right-side of the machine. After extensive repairs, Holly and his team were able to get Coulter back onto the race track with 25 laps remaining where the young driver ran at a safe, yet competitive, pace.

    Start – Eighth Finish – 34th Points – 28th Laps Led – 0

    JOEY COULTER QUOTES:

“I hate it that we had a tire blow out. The RCR Chevrolet Silverado was fast – credit goes out to Harold Holly (crew chief) and all the guys on the team. They did an amazing job getting the truck repaired as much as they could to get me back on the track. I wish we had better luck in starting the season but I’m looking forward to getting back in the truck at Phoenix.”

  • Sadler Gets Collected in Big One at Daytona

Sadler Gets Collected in Big One at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 20, 2010) — Riding the momentum of a second- place finish in the previous nights Truck Series event, Elliott Sadler and the No. 2 OneMain Financial Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) team had high expectations for the first race of the NASCAR Nationwide Series season.  It was not meant to be as the No. 2 car was collected in a lap 24 crash involving six cars.  Sadler sustained heavy front-end damage but was able to return to the race 73 laps down to gain valuable championship points finishing the event in the 38th position

“I’m really proud of my guys,” Sadler said after being checked and released for the infield care center. “With Daytona you just never know what is going to happen, I’m not really sure what happened to start the crash but we had no where to go.  We were in the wrong place at the wrong time and wrecked a really good race car.  But we were able to get it fixed and gain a position.  We have to gain all the points we can because we have some stiff competition and when we get to Homestead that one point just might make the difference.”

Sadler began the Driver for COPD 300 from the 19th starting position. From the drop of the green flag, he quickly joined KHI teammates Tony Stewart and Clint Bowyer moving up to the front of the field.  The first caution of the race waved on lap 15 for an incident behind Sadler and the lead pack.  During the caution the No. 2 team decided to come down pit road for fuel only.  Sadler returned to the track in the 17th position for the restart on lap 20.

By lap 22, Sadler had moved into the ninth position and was gaining momentum.  Three laps later however drivers Mike Wallace and Michael Annett got into each other right in front of Sadler, leaving the No. 2 car with nowhere to go.  Sadler’s OneMain Financial Chevrolet Impala sustained heavy front-end damage.  The team took the car to the garage area where they worked diligently for 73 laps before returning the car to the track.  Sadler drove the damaged car to a 38th-place finish.

Sadler’s KHI teammate Tony Stewart won the Driver for COPD 300 followed by fellow KHI teammate Clint Bowyer in second.  The rest of the top five included Landon Cassill, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Reed Sorenson. The NASCAR Nationwide Series will head west to Phoenix International Speedway for the second race of the 2011 season on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 5:30 pm, EST on ESPN 2.

  • Danica Patrick’s ‘Little Victories’ in Strengthening Her NASCAR Career

Danica Patrick’s ‘Little Victories’ in Strengthening Her NASCAR Career

The words from last year continue on into the 2011 season for Danica Patrick. What she needs are “little victories,” things to remind her that she is progressing in NASCAR and learning more and more each weekend.

    In Saturday’s race, she did just that.[media-credit name=”Jared C. Tilton” align=”alignright” width=”217″][/media-credit]

Taking the green flag from the fourth position, she dropped back while others paired up and moved forward with the field. As an inexperienced stock-car driver, the trust veterans had in her drafting skills was weak, most blasting by her within seconds.

Frustration set in. Dropping like a rock to mid-pack, no one looking to pick up and push a driver with only 13 NASCAR races under her belt.

“That just showed me (the two-car draft) is what you gotta do and that’s what they did up front all day.” She said after climbing from her race car, free of any wreckage of the day.

While she finished 14th, a position not representative of how fast and competitive her car was throughout the race, it didn’t all end without a positive.

Almost 30 laps into the DRIVE4COPD 300, skilled veteran Clint Bowyer gave her a shot.

“You look for fast cars,” Bowyer said. “I’m telling you, when you’re racing in that kind of atmosphere, you got to find a fast race car and meet up with it. I knew she had a fast car, and we’d go to the front.”

And he was right. Together they were completing 46 second laps around the two and a half mile oval, blazing fast compared to laps laid down in practice and qualifying.

He pushed her car to the lead, passing cars that led the field through most of the race as they stayed paired up with each other.

With that, she became the first female to lead a lap at Daytona International Speedway in a NASCAR-sanctioned event…a big accomplishment and “little victory” for Danica in the midst of only her second year racing on a partial NASCAR schedule.

Bowyer hung onto the rear of her car for a good few laps before pulling away to cool the car down.

“I was going to push her up to the front, and I did until I got hot and I had to switch,” Bowyer stated.

Its believed that it was a problem between spotters that completely ended the draft between them.

“I was yelling at my spotter, ‘Go find her spotter.’ And I guess he (Patrick’s spotter) didn’t think she needed to be doing that because he wasn’t paying attention.”

That was when Bowyer joked for his spotter to throw her spotter off the stand.

He ended his statements about the pairing with, “She did a good job, today.” Earning respect from veterans is one step in her NASCAR career, a very important one to accomplish to be competitive in future races.

“I really ran up front most of the day. I’m probably not to the point where if I pull out, people are going, ‘OK, she’s going, I’m going.”

She knows the process from rookie to veteran from her IndyCar career, though, the trust factor comes much more into play on a super-speedway where drivers depend on one-another to push them across the finish line.

“That takes a while to earn the trust and respect of the other drivers. I’m not mad at that, it’s just going to take time.”

With a repeat visit scheduled for the July Daytona race, that’s exactly what its going to take: time and effort to make friends within NASCAR outside of her teammates.

Clearly, today many saw her as competitive and as having a fast car, but the trust issue is what it comes down to. Will she spin me out? Will she slow down and send me crashing into the wall?

The questions that may haunt a NASCAR driver as they pull up on an inexperienced driver, or see one appear in their rear-view mirror are never-ending.

While many may have wanted to give her the chance to hit the front of the pack, only a few took the risk.

When it comes down to it, her next race in Daytona will be set up very similar, and if things play out the way they did today, she may be a force to be reckoned with come that night.

Experience. Trust. Confidence. Three things a driver looks for in their “dancing partner,” so while she may have been competitive and fast, it’ll take time for other drivers to see that and grow to a trust-level of pushing her car to the front of the pack.

  • Robert Richardson Jr. Flexes Muscle Before Becoming Victim At Daytona

Robert Richardson Jr. Flexes Muscle Before Becoming Victim At Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA (February 20, 2011) – – Boasting an eye-catching paint scheme promoting the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) on the No. 23 Dodge Challenger R/T, Robert Richardson Jr. had high hopes for Saturday’s DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona (Fla.) International.

Steadily improving their No. 23 Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Dodge Challenger R/T throughout the practice sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, McKinney, Texas native Richardson Jr., knew that despite posting the 38th fastest qualifying effort on Friday afternoon, his R3 Motorsports prepared Dodge had the capabilities of being a contender in the 30th Nationwide Series event held at the “World Center of Racing”.

When the green flag waived on the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) season-opener, Robertson Jr., brilliantly gained 10 positions in the first lap. With guidance from his spotter, former NASCAR driver David Keith, the Sam Bass-designed Dodge Challenger R/T continued to march through the field and by lap five, Richardson Jr. had cleverly navigated his automobile into the seventh position.

Richardson Jr. would remain tucked in with the lead-pack, flirting between the top-10 and top-15 before the first caution flag waived on lap 15.

Under the yellow flag, crew chief Walter Giles keyed the radio and advised his driver to come to pit road for four tires and fuel. A solid stop by the R3 bunch would send the former Southern Methodist University quarterback back into competition.

Returning to racing, Richardson Jr. would remain comfortably inside the top-25 but the field had strung into several groups including the non-popular two car caboose. Despite remaining tucked in with a group of race cars, the leaders, which all consisted of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) veterans, would overtake Richardson’s bunch on lap 52, taking the No. 23 Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Dodge Challenger R/T from the lead circuit.

A few laps later, the caution flag would waive which offered the opportunity for Giles to make a strategy call. While the leaders came to pit road, the R3 Motorsports vehicle remained on the 2.5-mile superspeedway thus finding themselves back on the lead lap through NASCAR’s “waive around” policy.

Hoping for a caution shortly after the restart, Richardson Jr. began his climb back towards the front but Giles had no choice to bring his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rookie to pit road under green flag conditions on lap 68 for fuel only.

The stop would cost Richardson Jr., his lead lap status again. Vowing though not to give up, the former ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards driver slowly inched up the leader board despite losing another two laps under green because of the leader’s unbelievably fast and torrid pace.

Richardson Jr. would retrieve one of his laps lost when the leaders made green flag pit stops approximately 30 laps from the checkered flag. The yellow flag slowed the field once again on lap 101 with Giles opting to bring his former NASCAR Southeast Touring Division pilot to pit road for the final time for four tires and fuel.

Although the team realized that they may have been out of contention for the win, they were reprieved on the fact they still could obtain a respectable finish.

Shortly after the green flag waived, several cars ahead of No. 23 Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Dodge Challenger R/T made contact and spun directly in the path of Richardson Jr. The 26-year old locked the brakes, but was unable to escape the chaos unscathed on lap 105.

The former late-model ace brought his damaged machine to pit road to be examined by his R3 team. Upon further inspection it was determined that the radiator had been busted. With the number of laps remaining in the 200 mile event, the team would be unable to repair their automobile, thus forcing an unplanned exit in the contest and settle for a frustrating 32nd place finish.

“This was tough to swallow,” said Richardson Jr., who made his 70th career Nationwide start at Daytona. “We proved within the very first few laps of the race that we had a car capable of winning the race. We dropped back and were just biding our time and then our day seemed to come unraveled. It’s a shame because we had an awesome Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Dodge Challenger R/T. I’m sorry we could not deliver them a better finish, but we’ll make it up to them next weekend at Phoenix.”

He added, “I want to thank the R3 team for giving me a great race car, one of the best I’ve ever had at Daytona. The race was interesting to say the least. You had to be literally hooked up and latched with another car to even have an impact. We found a couple good partners out there, just couldn’t avoid the mess ahead of us. We’ll get this hot rod fixed and unleash her again at Talladega.”

The R3 Motorsports welcomed a special guest on Saturday. With the team’s announcement of WCS earlier in the week, Sebastian Teunissen, Executive Director of Global Corporate Leadership arrived Saturday morning to partake in his first stock car event to support Richardson Jr. and his family-owned team.

Teunissen, a resident of Bronx, New York sat atop the pit box with Giles and R3 Motorsports car owner Robert Richardson Sr.

On Sunday, February 20th, Richardson Jr. will make his second consecutive start in the Super Bowl of NASCAR, the Daytona 500. In an entry fielded by Front Row Motorsports (FRM), Richardson Jr. will start his No. 37 Texas North Pipe Ford Fusion a career best 28th in his sixth career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start.

Round two of 34 on the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule steers the sanctioning body West to Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway for the running of the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 on Saturday, February 26. The green flag will waive shortly after 5:30 p.m. Eastern with live covered provided by ESPN2, MRN and XM-Sirius Satellite Radio (Channel 128).

LATE RACE INCIDENT SPOILS SOLID RUN FOR JASON WHITE AT DAYTONA

Daytona Beach, FL (2-18-2011) – After a solid run in the top-5 for most of Friday night’s NextEra Energy Resources 250, Jason White and the No. 23 GunBroker.com Chevrolet got caught up in a late-race incident, relegating the rookie team to a 30th place finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway.

White, in his fourth year in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, qualified the No. 23 GunBroker.com Chevrolet twelfth in Thursday evening’s time trials. The Richmond, VA native took only one lap around Daytona’s 2.5-mile superspeedway notching a fast lap of 51.191 seconds (175.812 mph), placing the rookie team on the outside of the sixth row for the start of the 100-lap shootout Friday night.

The 36-truck field took the green flag just past 7:30 p.m. ET in front of an estimated crowd of 57,000. Driver, Jason White and crew chief Chad Kendrick had a solid plan in place to move to the front of the pack when the green flag fell, which is exactly what they did. By lap 4, the orange and black GunBroker.com Chevy had found its way to the bottom of the track running single file in the 5th position.

White maintained his position inside the top-5 over the next 34 laps which included a green flag pit stop on lap 30 for a minor chassis adjustment and fuel. When the first caution flag was waved at lap 39 for an accident in turn two, Kendrick made the call to leave the No. 23 machine out on the track. When the race resumed on lap 42, White was scored in the fourth position.

Restarting on the top of the race track, White struggled over the next five laps to get his GunBroker.com Chevy to the bottom of the track and was shuffled all the way back to the 16th position. When the second caution flag of the evening fell on lap 55 for debris, Chad Kendrick used the opportunity to bring the GunBroker.com machine down pit road for fuel and four Goodyear tires. White would resume the race in the 28th position.

With 43 laps to go, White made a charge to the front, and was scored 15th just three laps later. The field was slowed once again at lap 67 for accident in turn one. Kendrick made the call to bring the No. 23 machine down pit road for the final stop of the evening to top off with fuel, and White would maintain his position on the race track when the field went back to green on lap 69.

Just seven laps later, the No. 5 machine of Travis Kvapil cut a left front tire while making his way into Turn-1, causing a 14 truck pile-up and ultimately ending the night for Jason White and the Joe Denette Motorsports team.

Michael Waltrip went on to win his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race followed by Elliott Sadler in second, while Clay Rogers rounded out the top-3.

“Obviously, this isn’t the finish we were looking for at Daytona,” said White. “We had such a great GunBroker.com Chevy here and ran up front most of the night. We got back in the pack following a pit stop and when the wreck happened we got piled up and had nowhere to go. That is just the way it happens sometimes at Daytona though. The team and I will put this behind us and we look forward to Phoenix.”

Up next for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is the second stop of the season at Phoenix International Raceway. The Lucas Oil 150 will take the green flag Friday night, February 25 at 8:00 p.m. ET. Race coverage will be televised on SPEED and also broadcasted live on MRN Radio at 7:45 p.m. ET.

Bell Left with 31st Place Finish After Tangle in the Draft

Daytona Beach, Fla. (February 19, 2011)- Family-owned NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team MAKE Motorsports made the trip to Daytona International Speedway for the first time in its existence to attempt to qualify for the Next-Era Energy Resources 250. Keeping the nose clean and in contention for nearly three-quarters of the NextEra Energy Resources 250, the first “big one” of the night unfortunately ended Bell’s night and his team’s hopes of a solid finish prematurely.

From the first laps on the track on Wednesday to a nerve wrenching qualifying session on Thursday night, driver TJ Bell maintained high hopes for the No. 50 Pinnacle Rubber Mulch/Liberty Tire Recycling Chevy. Running well in the draft through both NASCAR Camping World Truck Series practice sessions, Crew Chief Tom Buzze and TJ put their heads together to find the right setup for single truck speed before qualifying on Thursday night.

Lacking owner’s points from 2010, Bell would have to beat 10 of the 19 trucks who were not locked into the field. Laying down a lap of 51.549 seconds, Bell placed his Silverado 22nd to make the NextEra Energy Resources 250 based on time and speed.

Kicking off the 250-mile race, Bell contently rode within the top 15 trucks to test the waters and find a good dancing partner for the first 20 laps. Buzze called Bell down pit road for two tires and a full tank of fuel on lap 31, just seven laps before the first yellow flag of the night on lap 38 for a single truck accident. Bell expressed to his team the truck was handling well, but he needed someone to push him in order to get a good run. Finding a couple solid drafting partners, Bell raced his way into the top five and maintained position in the lead pack for the next 30 laps.

Beginning around lap 70, the Reno, Nevada-native began to get caught up in traffic and was shuffled back from the front pack. Bell was searching for the line that would help him get back to the front when the No. 5 of Travis Kvapil blew a tire on lap 75, causing a chain reaction. The Pinnacle Rubber Mulch Silverado became a victim and was hooked into the wall by the trucks directly in front of it, suffering significant damage that would ultimately end the night for Bell and MAKE Motorsports.

“It’s really unfortunate that it had to end the way it did because the Pinnacle Rubber Mulch truck was running really well. If we had someone pushing us we were really fast and the truck was handling really well no matter what situation I put it in,” Bell commented following the incident. “I can’t say enough about this team of guys that put this truck together, and for all of our sponsors like Liberty Tire Recycling, Pro Gold Engine Treatment and VP Parts Warehouse. We raced our way to the front and everyone knew that MAKE Motorsports was there, regardless of the finishing position we brought home.”

Crew Chief Buzze was pleased with the team’s performance and ability to make the best of their run at Daytona as well.

“TJ did a great job keeping the truck in the lead pack for the majority of the race and we were just logging laps until the finish. It’s unfortunate we were caught up in the mess, but it’s typical Daytona. I’m proud of the team for pulling everything together and we’re going to work hard until the next one.”

Stewart captures fourth straight DRIVE4COPD 300

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Tony Stewart made a late charge with the aid of outside pole-sitter Landon Cassill to steal the win from the tandem of Clint Bowyer and Dale Earnhardt Jr. by .007 seconds in Saturday’s 53rd annual DRIVE4COPD 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at historic Daytona International Speedway.

Stewart, who led five times for 13 laps, has dominated the season-opening NASCAR Nationwide Series event – winning four straight and six of the last seven. He is now just one shy of Dale Earnhardt’s record seven wins and is tied with Bobby Allison for the second-most wins all-time at the “World Center of Racing” with 16. The late Dale Earnhardt tops the list with 34.

“This is momentum and a great way to lead into tomorrow,” said Stewart, who was 11th with six laps to go. “There’s nothing better than going back to the motorhome tonight knowing you just won the race and have a shot of doing it tomorrow.”

Stewart’s surge at the finish line gave the No. 4 Kevin Harvick, Inc. Chevrolet the closest series finish at DIS and the third-closest finish in series history.

“Tony just used me when he needed to and that’s awesome,” said Cassill, who is the series’ points leader but doesn’t have a ride in next week’s race. “He taught me something. We swapped with two (laps) to go and he knew where to take the car and I don’t know if I could have done that like he did. I’m just happy to be pushing him through it and maybe next time I’ll be the one leading him through.

Bowyer finished second with Cassill, Earnhardt Jr., and Reed Sorenson rounding out the top five, respectively.

Defending series champion Brad Keselowski kept his No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge near the front for most of the race until he was caught up in an incident on lap 106, breaking his record 102-straight races without a DNF.

Eight drivers swapped the lead a race-record tying 35 times and 12 drivers of the 43-car field completed all 120 laps around the 2.5-mile tri-oval. Danica Patrick led a lap in the No. 7 Chevrolet, making her the first woman to lead a NASCAR-sanctioned event at Daytona International Speedway.
