No. 30 AccuDoc Solutions Chevrolet News and Notes

. Leffler looks to capture the 2011 Nationwide Series driver’s championship. With the recent announcement that drivers may only compete for one series championship, Jason Leffler is among the top-picks to win the 2011 Nationwide Series driver’s championship. Leffler has finished inside the top-10 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) driver’s points standings every year since 2006. Had the new rule been in effect in 2007, he would have claimed the NNS championship, rather than finishing third behind Sprint Cup Series regulars Carl Edwards and David Reutimann.

. Team Swap. As in 2010, Leffler will share seat time in the No. 38 Great Clips machine with Sprint Cup Series star, Kasey Kahne. In eight events throughout 2011, Leffler and his team, including crew chief, Eddie Pardue, will make the jump to the No. 30 Chevrolet. The number swap proved valuable for Leffler and his team in 2010, in eight starts behind the wheel of the No. 10 machine he scored seven top-10 and three top-five finishes!

. Proven Qualifier at Daytona International Speedway (DIS). Leffler has proven he knows how to qualify upfront at DIS. In 14 attempts, he has captured one pole award and started inside the top-10 on seven occasions, of which, four were inside the top-five. He is credited with four top-10 finishes and leading two laps.

. Start of a new era for Turner Motorsports. The NASCAR season-opener weekend will mark the start of a new era for Turner Motorsports. The team has expanded in 2011 from a two-truck operation in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) to become the largest stand-alone multi-series team in NASCAR’s top-tier touring series, fielding three entries in the NCWTS and four entries in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS). Three of the team’s regular NNS drivers (Jason Leffler, Reed Sorenson and Justin Allgaier) have been pegged as viable contenders to win the 2011 NNS driver championship.

. This week’s Impala. In this weekend’s NNS season-opener, the No. 30 AccuDoc Solutions team will hit the track with chassis number TMS-108. Chassis TMS-108 is a newly build chassis and has never been raced.

Jason Leffler on racing at Daytona

“The season-opener at Daytona is crazy! Not only is it like having our Super Bowl to start the season, but there is so much history here. Everyone has been off for three months and everyone is at the top of their game. The momentum that winning the first race of the season brings to a team could really shape your season. I would give anything to win here and I think this is the best chance we have had to win in a really long time. The guys have worked really hard in the shop over the last few months to make sure we can come out in 2011 and contend for a championship. I’m really excited to get on the track in the No. 30 AccuDoc Solutions Chevy and battle for the first win of the year.”

Jason Leffler on 2011 with Turner Motorsports

“Everyone at Turner Motorsports is really excited for 2011. You walk into the shop and the feeling is contagious. Mr. Turner has provided us with amazing equipment and the best opportunity to be competitive. One of the first things he expressed when he got here was his desire to win both the Nationwide and Truck championships in 2011. He promised he would do everything in his power to provide that opportunity and he has kept his word. I have no doubts that I will be battling both Justin and Reed for the championship in November!”

No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet News and Notes

. Sorenson Ready for New Season – Reed Sorenson returns to the No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet for Turner Motorsports in this weekend’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) season-opener. His start in the DRIVE4COPD 300 marks his eighth at the 2.5-mile superspeedway in the NNS. While competing for the series championship, Sorenson will spend the majority of his time in the No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet but will also race the No. 30 Chevrolet in select events.

. Sorenson at Daytona International Speedway (DIS) – In seven NNS starts at Daytona, Sorenson has notched three top-10s with a career best finish of seventh in 2007. His first Daytona start for Turner Motorsports was last summer in the Nationwide Series new car where he finished 22nd.

. Consistency a Key for Sorenson and Dollar General Team – Hoping for continued success in 2011, Sorenson looks to bring a great deal of consistency from his 2010 season. His crew remains virtually intact with crew chief Trent Owens at the helm of the No. 32 Dollar General team. Sorenson looks to build on last season’s solid finishes, boasting 21 top-10s in 28 starts throughout 2010.

. Dollar General Returns for Another Solid Season – Dollar General returns to the No. 32 Chevrolet in 2011 looking for its first win with Reed Sorenson and the newly expanded Turner Motorsports. The Goodlettsville, Tenn.- based company is in its fourth season as a marketing partner with the organization. Dollar General scored its first win with the No. 32 team in 2008 with Kyle Busch at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

. Start of a new era for Turner Motorsports – The NASCAR season-opener weekend will mark the start of a new era for Turner Motorsports. Three of the team’s regular NNS drivers (Jason Leffler, Reed Sorenson and Justin Allgaier) have been pegged as viable contenders to win the 2011 NNS driver championship.

. This Week’s Impala – Sorenson will pilot TMS-109 in this weekend’s DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway. This race will be the maiden voyage for this chassis, as it has yet to see on-track action.

    .

Sorenson on starting the season and heading to DIS

“I cannot wait to get back on the track at Daytona. To me, it seems like the off season has taken longer than normal. I think I was ready to get back racing right after Christmas. I’m really excited about the new surface at Daytona and I think it is going to provide some really great racing for the fans. I think this Dollar General team has the opportunity to pick up right where we left off last season- turning in solid finishes and contending for wins. I’m excited to have Trent [Owens, crew chief] back this season because I think we have the ability to bring home that first win for Turner Motorsports and contend for the championship.”

Sorenson on the opportunity to run for the NNS driver’s championship

“I think NASCAR’s new rule having drivers run for only one series championship is going to be a really good thing for me and for Turner Motorsports. I’m excited at the opportunity that we have to shoot for a goal like that; especially for my team and Dollar General. Mr. Turner has invested a lot in this team and it would be great to be able to bring the championship home for him. I feel like we have all the tools- great equipment, a strong team, a dedicated sponsor and solid leadership and now we need to put them together and get the results to show it on track.”

(KERNERSVILLE, NC) February 14, 2011- Bad Boy Buggies, a leader in 4×4 electric vehicles and utility vehicles for hunting and outdoor recreation, announced today that it will sponsor both NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series teams at Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI).  The Bad Boy Buggies brand will be proudly carried by all-star drivers Elliott Sadler and Clint Bowyer, both NASCAR veterans with multiple wins across all three of NASCAR’s premier national racing series.  The pair will tag team to drive Bad Boy Buggies-branded vehicles in both the Nationwide and Truck Series for five race events throughout 2011.

“We are excited to grow our partnership with KHI, Elliott Sadler and Clint Bowyer, and take advantage of this unique opportunity to promote Bad Boy Buggies,” said Michael Parkhurst, Vice President of Sales for Bad Boy Buggies. “The KHI cars and trucks have been very successful on the track, and I know that this season they will continue to find success and take the Bad Boy Buggies Chevrolets to victory lane.”

Team co-owner Kevin Harvick echoed Parkhurst’s sentiments.

“We’re very happy to partner with Bad Boy Buggies to promote its popular and proven line of outdoor vehicles,” Harvick said. “KHI is pleased to increase Bad Boy Buggies’ exposure among NASCAR fans, many of whom are also avid outdoors people who can use and appreciate the vehicles in their outdoor lifestyles.”

  • Elliott Sadler Daytona International Speedway Nationwide Series Advance

WELCOME BACK SADLER: On February 19, 2011, Elliott Sadler will strap back into a NASCAR Nationwide Series car to compete full time in the series for the first time since 1998. Sadler, along with Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) teammates Clint Bowyer and Tony Stewart, will join forces at Daytona (Fla.) International Raceway to defend KHI’s race winning organization title. In the past six season-opening races at Daytona International Speedway KHI has gone to victory lane three times.

PLATE-RACE PRESTIGE: Although Sadler has not competed in the Nationwide Series full time in 13 years, he has a vast amount of experience at Daytona International Raceway. During his first full-time Nationwide Series season in 1997 Sadler earned the pole award for the season-opening race. In the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Sadler nearly captured the 2002 Daytona 500 falling one position short finishing second. Even though Sadler has never pulled into victory lane for a points- paying race at Daytona he has felt the sweet taste of victory at the World Center of Racing when he captured the checkered flag in one of the 2004 Gatorade Duel qualifying races.

MAKING A NEW MARK: Driving for a new team, with new cars and a new sponsor, Sadler reunites with former sponsor CitiFinancial as they rebrand themselves as OneMain Financial. As Sadler puts himself in position to become a NASCAR champion in 2011, OneMain Financial found no better fit than their former brand representative to take them to a new level as they debut their new logo and colors under the watchful eye of loyal NASCAR fans at Daytona International Speedway.

10 YEARS OF RACING: In 2011, KHI will celebrate their 10th year of competition in NASCAR. Team co-owner Kevin Harvick made KHI’s first start in the Truck Series event at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway in 2001, narrowly missing the win by inches to series veteran Jack Sprague. Ten years later Kevin and DeLana Harvick have two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championships to their credit and multiple wins with a host of drivers to boast in their over 80,000 square foot facility in Kernersville, North Carolina. During 2011 all KHI vehicles will carry a commemorative decal as the company celebrates its accomplishments over the last 10 years.

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 2 team will utilize chassis No. 059 this weekend at Daytona International Speedway. Chassis No. 059 is a new chassis that has undergone extensive testing during the off season.

THOUGHTS FROM THE DRIVER: Elliott Sadler

What are your thoughts going into the race at Daytona International Speedway?

“I’m just ready to get going. It has been an exciting and busy off season, but I’m ready to put all the hard work to the test as we hit the track in Daytona. This year’s race will be an exciting one as all of us hit the track on a new surface. It will take a little bit to get adjusted to it but I’m ready to go racing and see what this season holds.”

Do you feel added pressure coming into this race as maybe a favorite to win?

“Not at all. I know my crew chief Ernie Cope has put together the best and most knowledgeable group of guys as my team for this season. I feel confident that we have the best equipment to get the job done. I’m also sure that I have two of the best teammates in the business to be surrounded by when the green flag drops for the DRIVE4COPD 300 on Saturday. I’m glad everyone thinks that we are favorites to win. I hope that things fall our way and we prove them right.”

As the season begins, you are the favorite to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series championship. What are your thoughts on being the team to beat?

“I have said this all throughout the off season. I’m having fun. This is the first time in several years that I am going to the race track excited to get in the car and have some fun. It reminds me of the days when I raced at South Boston (Va.) Speedway. I would come to the race track week in and week out as the odds on favorite and that is what made racing fun. Not only competing, but being the one to beat.”

  • Toyota NNS Daytona Notes & Quotes — Michael Annett

TOYOTA NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Notes & Quotes — Michael Annett Daytona International Speedway — February 12, 2011

MICHAEL ANNETT, No. 62 Pilot Travel Centers Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing Opening statement from Annett (prior to Q&A): “First of all, I need to start out with making some apologies to some certain people out there.  First off, my family  — they’ve been with me since I started this career and they’ve been behind me the whole way.  I think I let them down the biggest way a son or a brother really could.  Next, would be the Rusty Wallace organization.  They took a big chance on me this year and this obviously is not the way I wanted to start it out.  Definitely disappointed Rusty (Wallace, team owner) and everybody there — my team as well as the No. 66 team.  The next two years are going to be about earning their respect back.  I’m definitely in a position where I’m ready to do that.  With my sponsor, they’ve backed me since I started racing.  Like I said, I think let down and embarrassment is kind of the key words for everybody.  Last, is the NASCAR community.  These people come here each weekend to watch us race and there’s a lot of kids out there that look up to us as role models.  If I had kids I think I would be the last real person that I would point to for them to look up to right now.  I’m definitely owning up to the mistake I made and this is definitely the worst week of my life — the lowest I’ve ever felt as a person.  This can go two ways, it can either be the end of me or it can be the start of a new life and a better person, better driver and the word I used earlier — role model.  This is definitely something that I think is going to end up to be a success story in the end and definitely have the people behind me and the support from Rusty Wallace, my family and everybody I listed earlier.  I have everybody I need behind me to do this in turning this around and being a better person.”

Why did you choose to drive and were you worried about this ever happening? “We’re professional athletes and we need to maintain a certain lifestyle so we have to drive.  Driving while intoxicated — besides shooting somebody, it’s the worst thing you could possibly do.  It was just a huge mistake on my part.  It’s something that no one should ever do.  You can make a lot of mistakes in your life and that’s one that you should just never make.  It was just a horrible judgment call on my part and it’s something that is never going to happen again.  We’re definitely taking steps to make sure that it never happens again.”

Do you dispute anything you have been accused of in this situation? “No, not at all.  I’m owning up to everything I did and there’s no excuse for it, there’s nowhere to point a finger except right back at me.  Taking full blame and just hoping everyone can learn from this.  I know I have.  Honestly, it scared the hell out of me.  It’s something that we’re taking steps to make sure that it never happens again.  There wouldn’t need to be steps — I’m telling you, it honestly scared the hell out of me.  It’s something that’s just never going to happen again and it shouldn’t happen to anybody else.”

Do you feel like you need some counseling to get through this? “I really don’t know.  I know that’s part of the things that we’re doing with NASCAR and Rusty Wallace Racing.  We are going to do some counseling classes and some awareness classes.  After that I might be able to answer that question better and say, ‘Yeah, I did need this’ or ‘No, I didn’t.’  It’s something that I could control on my own.  It’s something I want to do even if they weren’t mandating because like I said, as much as Saturday night scared me, if I didn’t personally want to go to make sure there’s not a problem then I would wonder why other people weren’t helping me out here.  It’s something I want to do voluntarily and if they weren’t making me do it, I would be there.  I have already been there on Wednesday when I went in just to start the program.  I wanted to get that started even before we start racing next weekend.  We’re taking everything and all the steps we need to take.  I can answer that question better after I go to some classes and find out if there is a problem.”

How exactly did the accident scare you? “It scared me that I could have killed somebody or even injured somebody.  I could have injured myself.  Not only just the people that were involved in the accident and I drove a ways until we got to that point.  There’s so many lives that I risked and then also it was a wake-up call, the fact that I made that bad of a decision to get behind the wheel that night.  I need to sit back and think what kind of person am I, and I nee d to better my life and better my decisions and definitely need to start making a lot better judgment calls.”

Has your community service been determined? “No, it hasn’t and that goes along the lines that I am going to do that stuff anyways.  If they say do 20 hours, I will probably be doing 40.  This is the beginning of a new Michael Annett, a new person — not only in the NASCAR community, but as a person in general, as a family member, a better friend to everybody.  It’s just the start of a new person and community service is one of the best ways to get your head in the right place and realize what you really can do to help.”

MICHAEL ANNETT, No. 62 Pilot Travel Centers Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing (continued) What has the support in the garage area been like this week? “It’s been huge.  I’ve been getting phone calls and text messages from people I’ve never even talked to and that’s just huge.   It shows what our NASCAR community is like.  Everybody talks about it and it just seems like it takes incidents like this to really prove that it’s not all talk.  People really do care about one another and you have disputes on the track, but if you saw them with a flat tire going down the road after the race, you would probably stop and help them.”

Did you ever consider not racing this weekend? “I never thought that I was going to get out of the car and not show up this weekend.  To me, I’m in a position and at a high enough level where obviously what I did was a horrible mistake.  It’s public and everybody can see it.  I can take it from being just the worst thing in the world and making it better.  Somebody else out there who has nothing to do with racing hears about this and they know what happened to me and after they hear it they change their life around and make it better if they see that I have a success story.  It’s something where I’m in a position that I should have been doing this before this happened and should have done a lot better job at being a better person and being out there using the opportunity that I have for the good.  I never once thought about getting out of the car.  I’m taking the position I’m in to use it to its fullest.”

Have you listened to what others have been saying about you? “Rusty (Wallace, team owner) quoted it best yesterday –opinions are like butts, everybody’s got one and I really don’t need to hear their opinions.  I know how I feel inside.  I know the opinions of people that matter to me and those are the only ones I’m really going to listen to.”

How do you plan to change your life? “Really it’s starting out with a zero tolerance policy for myself and that’s being mandated by NASCAR, by Rusty Wallace Racing and with myself.  Alcohol’s a poison and to take a poison out of your body, everything you do throughout the day is going to be better — whether it’s at the gym or whatever.  You’re not going to wake up and not feel good and not want to do anything.  You can be at the shop at 7:00 AM working with your guys and being there and showing them your support and when you’re done you can go out and do some community service.  You’re going to be a better person in general and be a better family member.  Just certain things that when you take a poison out of your life like that, you’re just going to be a better person in general.”

What did Rusty Wallace say to you about the situation? “Huge disappointment was the first thing. I couldn’t blame him you know.  I sat back and took everything.  I owned up to it from the very beginning.  I have never once denied anything that happened, I owned up to it and tried to apologize and just needed to let him know how he felt.  After we got past that part and now it’s all support and that’s a really cool thing because he doesn’t have to do that.  He could have sent me out the door and I would be packing.  He’s behind me 110 percent –the whole Rusty Wallace Racing organization is behind me 110 percent.  When you’re going through the worst time of your life, you need people like that behind you and I definitely am fortunate enough to have that.”

What did you say to your race team following the incident? “That was one of the first things that I thought about — these people have families and if I’m not there — times are tough right now and someone might not be able to jump in the seat and drive that No. 62 car for the full season.  I went in there at 7:00 AM on Tuesday morning, got the whole shop together and stood up in front of them, owned up to what I did, apologized for embarrassing them and told them, ‘I lost a lot of respect from you guys that you’ve given me and I’ve been here a month.  I threw it all away.’  I said this was something I did not expect to get back after this meeting, after two weeks, after three months, six months.  I expect this to be years as bad as this situation is to gain that respect back.  There’s a difference between them supporting me 110 and 200 percent and they’re going to work as hard as they ever have to make sure we’re successful, but respect is something different. It’s something I’m going to earn in the shop, I’m going to earn with them personally and on track.  It’s something that fortunately enough I have the opportunity to do and I’m looking forward to it.”

MICHAEL ANNETT, No. 62 Pilot Travel Centers Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing (continued) Are you disappointed that no one talked you out of driving that night? “I got behind the wheel, I had the keys in my hand and I turned the truck on.  It was my choice and it was a horrible one, it was a huge mistake — just fortunate that no one got hurt.  I was able to call the family that was involved yesterday and had a nice talk with the man that was driving the car and fortunately enough they were all okay.  The cool thing was that he was really supportive.  He understands that it was a mistake.  He knows that’s not the kind of person I am and luckily enough he was open-minded and understood that we all make mistakes in our life and this was the worst kind possible.  Fortunate enough that this was just another person involved in this that is understanding and supportive.”

What were the circumstances of a previous incident in which you were involved? “I received a ticket for a failure to reduce speed earlier around the race of ORP (O’Reilly Raceway Park) last year.  It was a bad judgment call.  I compete in the Nationwide Series and they have a great program actually about texting while driving — an awareness program.  I’ve participated in them and I’ve talked to kids about it.  I definitely should have been doing a lot more listening than I was talking those days.  That’s part of being a better person.  Put your phone in the backseat until you get to where you’re going.  It’s a judgment call and what kind of call is a good person going to make — what kind of call is a guy that’s not really thinking about others going to make?  Unfortunately it took two times for me to realize that.  It’s sunk in now and hopefully I can go out and explain my situation to other people and learn from the other incident and that one as well.”

How do you feel this will impact your career? “I’m sure it will follow me, but I also hope the fact of where I was to where I’m going to be six months, a year or two down the road.  I hope that’s what they can look at, ‘Yeah, he made a big mistake at 24, but he’s 25 or 26 now and look where he’s at now.  He realized he needed to change and he did.’  They’ll see that in the personal side of me.  My dad said it best, I need to drive my way out of this.  Hopefully we are going to put all this behind us and go out there and be competitive with RWR (Rusty Wallace Racing) this year.  It’s hard to go against success and that’s what we’re going to do — going to have success on and off the track.”

Is Daytona the best track to being your comeback after winning the ARCA race three years ago? “I was actually laying in bed thinking about that last night.  Three years ago this was the best time of my life, standing here in Daytona on this day for the ARCA race and to come back here three years later and it’s the worst time of my life.  If there’s any place I would like to be to turn it around, it’s here and with the people I’m with and the organization I’m with.”

  • NASCAR Needs Ounce of Prevention in Substance Abuse Policy

NASCAR Needs Ounce of Prevention in Substance Abuse Policy

Before the official start of the 2011 NASCAR season, the issue of substance abuse again made headlines for the sport, with the arrest of up and coming driver Michael Annett for driving under the influence.

[media-credit name=”FMCM” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]Annett, age 24, allegedly blew a .32 in the breath alcohol level test. This is four times over the legal limit in North Carolina, where he was pulled over after an accident.

Rusty Wallace Racing, the team for whom Annett drives, took immediate action.  The team announced that Annett will not be allowed to drink alcohol at all and will get no ‘second chance’ if he violates that requirement.

“It’s real serious to me what happened,” Rusty Wallace, principal of the team, said. “We’re doing the right things with Michael. NASCAR trusts we’re doing the right things.”

“It’s some alcohol awareness, it’s some community service, he’s at that race shop at 7 a.m. every morning,” Wallace continued. “We’ve got him polishing the freaking drive shafts because I’m pissed at him.”

NASCAR has also imposed its own sanctions on Annett as well.  The sanctioning body announced that is has paced Annett, driver of the No. 62 race car in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, on probation until December 31, 2011.

Annett will be evaluated by a certified drug and alcohol professional at NASCAR’s discretion.  The young driver will also be subject to random testing throughout the year as well.

Unfortunately for the sport, Annett is not alone in having an alcohol-related driving incident prior to or during the racing season.

In 2009, Richard Petty Motorsports young gun AJ Allmendinger was arrested for driving under the influence.  Even veteran driver Michael Waltrip has had his share of incidents, one in 2009 and another in 2007 where alcohol was suspected to be a factor in crashes behind the wheel. However, Waltrip was never charged.

With all this attention to alcohol-related issues, especially with drivers getting behind the wheel of a car after imbibing, NASCAR has indeed reacted swiftly and decisively to the various incidents.  NASCAR, as well as the race teams involved, should be commended for that.

Yet, in addition to the reaction, the sport must also seriously consider adding some prevention strategies to the mix.

Let’s face it, while not excusing it in any way, shape or form, anyone can make a mistake when it comes to having a few glasses of wine or a few beers and then getting behind the wheel.  Most of us, particularly in our youth, could claim the phrase, “There but for the grace of God go I” when it comes to those situations.

But the element that the sport may be missing when it comes to their substance abuse policy is that element of prevention. What is NASCAR really doing to educate those who participate in the sport at whatever level as to the dangers of drinking, drugging and driving prior to it happening?

As a licensed clinical social worker, as well as someone who has run programs for those who have been convicted of driving under the influence, it has been my personal experience that most individuals have no clue how little alcohol they have to have in their bodies in order to be impaired behind the wheel of any vehicle.

In fact, most folks that I have worked with in my professional career have had no idea of the alcohol content in one drink, whether it be beer, wine or other spirits.  They are also stunned when they learn of the amount of alcohol that it takes for their particular body type to be considered legally and functionally impaired.

NASCAR must consider being more proactive when it comes to prevention of substance abuse in the sport.  This is true especially in a sport where the majority of the drivers are young, male, and fearless as they need to be to even participate as a race car driver.

NASCAR, as well as the various race teams, should run regular substance abuse education and prevention courses that are required for drivers at every level. This should be a part of the licensing requirements, where not only do the drivers declare which Series they are running for championships in but they also check off that they have participated in at least one substance abuse awareness seminar or course.

Having said that, these substance abuse prevention and education requirements should not just be made for the Cup, Nationwide and Truck Series.  They should also be required in the Camping World East and West Series, and yes, should even be required in the up and coming series where those teenagers and even pre-teens are now racing.

Perhaps if substance abuse prevention and education programming was added to NASCAR’s substance abuse policy, situations like with Michael Annett will become a thing of the past.  And that would be great not only for the sport, where the athletes serve as role models to so many youth, but for the athletes themselves who can avoid having to be punished or sanctioned, to the detriment of all.

Best of all, alcohol and drug prevention and education might just save a life.  And that truly is the most powerful argument of all for NASCAR to add that ounce of prevention to the sport’s substance abuse policy.

TEAM CHEVY COMMENTS ON FUEL INJECTION

    February 11, 2011

Following NASCAR’s announcement today regarding the partnership with Freescale Semiconductor and McLaren Electronic Systems to develop and integrate fuel injection systems into the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for the 2012 season, Chevrolet and key partner Earnhardt Childress Racing (ECR)/Richard Childress Racing (RCR) issued the following statements:

Statement by Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports: “We are pleased to see NASCAR’s announcement regarding the incorporation of fuel injection in 2012. One of our key priorities at Chevrolet is to incorporate relevant technologies into our race cars that link to our production cars. Now, our focus is to work with NASCAR, our teams and engineers to prepare for the implementation of fuel injection targeting 2012.”

Statement by Danny Lawrence, ECR Trackside Manager: “We’ve been working on a number of different fuel injection units at ECR to be prepared in every direction when NASCAR announced its decision. We’ve had success with our current fuel injection system in the Grand-Am Series Daytona Prototype division, as recently as last month at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. ECR has been working closely with General Motors, which is known to have the best systems out there, so now that NASCAR has announced its decision, we’re ready to start hammering on it. RCR/ECR was fortunate enough to earn the first wins ever with the Chevrolet SB2 engine and the R07 engine so our goal is to keep that ‘first’ streak alive with our fuel injected Chevrolet.”

  • Ford Racing Reacts To Fuel Injection

FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES Daytona Speedweeks, Page 1 February 11, 2011 Daytona International Speedway

NASCAR announced today that the sport will be going to fuel injection with the 2012 season being the targeted start time. Ford Racing got statements from Jamie Allison and Doug Yates regarding this change and what it means.

JAMIE ALLISON, Director, Ford North America Motorsports

“We fully support the move to fuel injection in NASCAR. It’s been a topic of discussion by the manufacturers and NASCAR for a number of years, and we’re pleased to see it progressing forward. Our Ford fans want to see more brand identity and relevant technologies in the cars we race in NASCAR; so we think it’s very important that both the cars and the technology in NASCAR are more closely related to production cars. The move to fuel injection is another important step in that process.”

DOUG YATES, Chief Engine Builder, Roush Yates Engines

“It’s a big change for our sport and it’s an exciting time to be an engine guy. We’ve had these carburetors for many years, so the move to fuel injection is really something we welcome. We look forward to working with NASCAR over the next month to get prepared for the 2012 season and now that we know there are some official partners and a clear direction, I think it’s going to be a lot of fun getting prepared. These carburetors have done a good job for a long time, but we think fuel injection can help us tune each cylinder more precisely and probably clean up some emissions off-throttle, which is good and healthy for the sport. When you also consider the change NASCAR made this year with the E15 fuel, the sport is definitely heading in the right direction and doing some really good things.”
