  • FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES – TREVOR BAYNE

FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES    NASCAR Media Day,
February 10, 2011    Daytona International Speedway

TREVOR BAYNE – No. 21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion – YOU’LL BE RUNNING BOTH
SERIES THIS YEAR.  HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT?  “We’re really excited for
the upcoming year.  We checked the box for the Nationwide Series, so
to be able to run for that championship, I think we’re gonna be really
competitive.  They’ve built a really solid team around me.  I’m gonna
be in the 16 this year, which is one of the primary cars, whereas last
year I was kind of a fifth team that was just thrown in there, so I
know our Nationwide deal is gonna be strong.  The way this Cup deal
came about was just being there in the Nationwide Series and running
strong there and showing some potential.  Then when I made the switch
over to Ford Racing and Roush last year, the opportunity came about
with the Wood Brothers because Roush was working on supporting them a
little bit and Donnie Wingo had just switched over and Bill Elliott
was the driver at the time and they just said, ‘Hey, if you want to
come over here and drive this thing one race, come on over.’  So the
reason I went there to run Texas was to get approved for Daytona and
this race we’re gonna run now.  At the time, I thought it might be a
fifth Roush car or something, but it ended up going really well at
Texas and the Wood Brothers were like, ‘Hey, we’ll keep moving forward
here.’  So it’s a really awesome opportunity and I love the Wood
Brothers team.  If I could just drive there forever I would be happy
because they’re just racers.  Eddie and Len Wood, they like to hang
out at the shop and be a part of it.  Leonard is always there working
on projects.  I always tell Leonard, ‘It’s no wonder you guys won so
many races.’  This guy is smart.  He’s in there building carbon fiber
R/C cars and all kinds of stuff, so it’s just a racer’s dream to drive
for the Wood Brothers.  It’s a famous car and to make my debut here at
Daytona with them, I couldn’t ask for a better situation.”

WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RULE TO RUN FOR ONLY ONE
TITLE?  “I love it.  I was  hoping they didn’t take away the Cup
drivers altogether because that’s just competition.  We want to race
against the best and that’s the only way we’re gonna become the best
is if we’re racing against them and bettering ourselves all the time.
But I also like the point that we’re gonna be able to shine as
champions now.  One Nationwide regular is gonna win the championship
this year and I think that’s really cool and gives us something to
look forward to, and it just gives us some credibility moving forward.
It’s gonna help us build a brand as we’re moving up to Cup because
you can sell a champion.  I think that’s really important, but I love
that the Cup drivers are still around because it’s the best of both
    worlds.”

HAS DAVID PEARSON GIVEN YOU ANY ADVICE YET, PARTICULARLY
ABOUT HOW TO RUN AT DAYTONA?  “I haven’t got the chance to talk to
David much yet.  I was actually testing during media tour and that was
the first time he kind of came back around, so hopefully he’s gonna be
down here and I can talk to him because that’s a smart guy.  I got to
talk to Bill Elliott a little bit last year when I was in Texas about
even this race and those guys have a lot of knowledge.  They just know
so much about it.  Obviously, it’s a little bit different now but the
rules of physics in racing still apply, so everything that they tell
you is true.  But I think the best learning tool is experience, so
some of the stuff they were telling me I was trying to be as big of a
sponge as I could, but I didn’t have enough pores to soak it in
because they were feeding me so much, so I think once I get out on the
race track and I know what to expect, then I can go back to them and
even learn more and ask more questions.”

YOU DON’T SEEM TO HAVE ANY
JITTERS ABOUT BEING ON THIS BIG STAGE.  “I don’t know.  When you set
your expectations and you finally get there, it doesn’t come as a
surprise, I guess.  Since I was five years old I wanted to be here at
this point, so now that we’re here, this is where I wanted to be so we
belong here and I think we’re gonna try to make that statement that
we’re not just here to run a race, we’re here to stay.  I know that’s
a strong statement because we haven’t been on the race track yet, but
I think we can.  I think we’ve got the opportunity to do it.  I’ve got
all the support around me with Ford Racing and Wood Brothers and Roush
on the Nationwide side, and getting double seat time this weekend, I’m
really looking forward to that because I like to stay busy all the
    time.”

TREVOR BAYNE CONTINUED — DALE EARNHARDT CAME HERE LIKE HE OWNED THE
PLACE IN ’79 AND DROVE IT LIKE HE DID.  “I think as a race car driver
that’s the mentality you have to have.  Sometimes it gets me in
trouble because I’m so worried about performance and being the fastest
in practice and qualifying on the pole that you set unreal
expectations and that sets you up for disappointment, but I think as
long as we set those real expectations, kind of like we did at Texas,
and you meet those expectations, you’re just gonna get better and
better.  I think you have to set those expectations so you can meet
them and keep bettering yourself all the time.”

    ARE YOU RUNNING FOR
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR IN CUP?  “I would like to.  I would love to be
able to say I was a Cup Rookie of the Year, but I don’t know what
they’re gonna do yet.  I’ve been asking them and prying at them.  I
think they are gonna build something to make it easy for somebody to
run for Rookie of the Year.  Whether it’s this year or next year, I
don’t know.  They may be more forgiving on how many races I can run,
or whether you’re designated to run that series for points or not then
you become a rookie.  I don’t know what they’re gonna do, but I would
love to one day run for Rookie of the Year, whether it’s this year or
next year.  I’ve got 17 Cup races scheduled so far, but if somebody
wants to come on for four more, we’ll do it.  I think everything is
open-ended right now.  Our Nationwide deal, our Cup deal.  You’ll see
my styling Herbie the Lovebug-looking suit when I come out here.  It’s
all solid white.  I think David Pearson will have some respect for
that – a solid white car.  I actually think Ford is on the car for
this week promoting the Mustang, and our Cup deal is really
open-ended.  We’ve sold 17 so far with Ford Racing, Motorcraft, Ford
Parts.com and Quick Lane have all come on and kind of combined to help
us get those 17, but now we’re looking to build on that.  As many as
we can run, I would be more than happy to get behind the wheel.”

JEFF GORDON SAID RACING TOOK HIM AWAY FROM A LOT.  DID YOU MISS ANYTHING
DURING YOUR TEEN DAYS THAT YOU REGRET?  “My birthday is on the 19th
and is on the day of the Nationwide race and I’ll be 20, so my teen
years are kind of over now and I definitely see what Jeff is saying.
It takes a lot of sacrifice, but that’s why only a few get to do this
every weekend.  It’s missing birthday parties when you’re five years
old to go to the go kart track, but looking at it now, there’s nothing
I would rather do than be sitting here ready to run the 500.  I don’t
count it as a loss for having to do those kind of things.  At the
time, it may seem like the end of the world when I hang out with
friends, but this has been my dream, so to stay focused and stay
driven, I think it’s good for kids to have these kind of goals.  Some
of the activities they do participate in they shouldn’t be (laughing),
so I think it’s good to have these kind of goals and get there.”  HOW
DO YOU LIKE BEING HERE AT 8 AM?  “Every Tuesday I get up and do that
Sirius radio show at 8:30, so I’m kind of used to getting myself
going.  If I could sleep in until 12 every day, that would be the way
I would have it, but that’s not reality anymore.  The problem is I
still stay up until two every night.  I haven’t fixed the night part
yet, but I’ve fixed the morning, so, really, I just lose sleep instead
    of going to bed earlier.”

HOW GOOD CAN YOU GUYS BE ON THE CUP SIDE?
“I want to be realistic, but I’m also an optimist, so I’m gonna say
that we’re gonna be really competitive.  I think setting those high
expectations will make us perform better.  I think we have all the
equipment.  We have the support from Ford Racing.  They’ve really
stepped up their game this year.  They sat us all down and said, ‘Hey,
what is it gonna take to win races and championships?’  Just to see
that kind of support from a manufacturer is huge.  To know Roush
Fenway is behind me as a driver on the Nationwide side and anything I
need is gonna really help me to move forward.  The Wood Brothers,
they’ve poured their heart and soul into this.  You can see a lot of
excitement going on and they said they haven’t felt this excited going
to Daytona in a long time, so to hear that it gives me a little boost
to see the confidence they already have in me after one race.
Hopefully, we  can just build on that, but I think we can be
    competitively a top 15 team.  I don’t know that because we haven’t
been on the track yet, but given our run last year, if it’s anything
like Texas, then there’s no doubt  in my mind that we can  be a top 15
    team every week.”

TREVOR  BAYNE CONTINUED — YOU HAD A ROUGH STRETCH IN NATIONWIDE LAST
YEAR WITH ACCIDENTS.  DO YOU FEAR THAT CAN HAPPEN IN CUP AND YOU’LL GO
THROUGH A LEARNING PROCESS?  “It was tough in the Nationwide Series
last year.  It started here on lap four or seven and we were already
wrecked.  I don’t want to say that’s part of it because it’s not, it
doesn’t always happen, but I definitely think there’s a learning
curve.  You look at guys like Joey Logano and now look at what he’s
doing, so there’s no doubt in my mind that there’s gonna be a learning
curve, so to have those 17 races this year to prepare for hopefully a
full season next year, that’s a perfect scenario to learn.  But I
think we can avoid some of that, too, by running good.  If you stay up
front, then you’re generally out of trouble, especially on the
Nationwide side.  When you’re running 15th-20th, you’re probably gonna
get crashed just because that’s where you’re around, so as long as we
stay competitive and stay up front, I think we should be OK this year.
On the Cup side, I’ve already gotten to know a lot of the drivers, so
I don’t really see it being a problem of them looking down at me and
saying, ‘Hey, I need a caution, let’s find the 21 car.’  I’ve been
there before, but I think running the Nationwide Series and having
them run with me has really built a lot of confidence and respect
    between us.”

ANY CUP GUYS YOU GO TO FOR ADVICE?  “There are a lot.
Jimmie Johnson has always been out-of-his-way-nice to me, and that’s
something you wouldn’t expect a five-time champion to do, but
everytime I see him, whether I’m walking down pit road and he’s on the
other side, he always comes to me.  Even at Texas, I was standing
there before qualifying and he’s like, ‘Hey, just keep your blinders
on and stay focused on your goals.’  He’s incredible at being able to
block out everything, so I’ve got to take that advice and run with it.
Kevin Harvick, believe it or not, has played an instrumental role.  A
lot of younger guys think he pushes them around, but, for some reason,
we’ve clicked.  He called me over to his trailer at the first Dover
and he’s like, ‘Man, I don’t know what’s going on, but I feel like I
want to help you.’  He was talking about setting a pace for myself
and not racing every lap like it’s the last lap.  That’s my
competitive nature.  I want to lead every lap.  I want to be the
fastest every lap, so to have a guy like that kind of tell me, ‘It’s
OK not to be the fastest every lap, just be the fastest on the last
lap.’  That’s the kind of stuff that helps.  And obviously Carl now
that he’s my teammate.  As soon as I started talking to Roush he
called me up.  He was like, ‘Man, we would love to have you.’  It’s
almost like he was talking to me as Jack would.  He’s like, ‘Come on
over.  We want to have you and help you.’  So he’s just been really
    awesome about it so far.”

DOES IT KIND OF SURPRISE YOU WHEN YOU
ANSWER THE PHONE AND IT’S CARL EDWARDS ON THE OTHER END?  “I’m not
gonna lie it does, but getting to know these guys they’re really
personable people.  They’re awesome.  They treat me just like my
buddies do at home, so it’s really cool to see that and it’s weird
because my buddies at home are like, ‘Dude, you were just on the phone
with Carl Edwards?  What’s that?’  I just lost that kind of
perspective of it because I’m in it everyday.  I’m in Mooresville a
lot and I’m around the shop and I’m just used to it, but when you get
outside of that immune system, everybody is like, ‘Whoa, this is a big
deal.’  So it’s cool to see that people still think NASCAR is big deal
because it is and it’s awesome.”

TREVOR BAYNE CONTINUED — ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR EXPECTATIONS
OR WOULD YOU RATHER BE UNDER THE RADAR MORE?  “The best thing about
the Wood Brothers team is that you would never think the 21 team would
be an underdog team, but in a sense it is because it’s not a four-car
powerhouse team like Hendrick or Roush or Joe Gibbs even with their
three cars.  So I love the opportunity that I’m getting there.  I’m
not expected to go out and light the world on fire as if I jumped in
the 99 car next week, then that’s what people would expect.  Like the
Kevin Harvick situation when he took over for Dale Earnhardt.  I heard
him talking about this when we were down here for the test.  People
just expected him to do good, whereas me, I get to kind of start at
the ground level and work my way up.  There is a lot of opportunity to
keep bettering ourselves and moving up to those powerhouse teams, but,
like I said, I’d like to stay at the Wood Brothers forever. I think
top 15, that might be setting the bar a little high at first and that
may set us up for failure, but I want to have high goals so I can get
to them and not be satisfied if we run 25th.  I always want to be
pushing for more, but I definitely think I’m in the perfect situation
to be with the Wood Brothers and great support.  I couldn’t ask for a
better time to be a part of Ford Racing.  The Roush Yates engines are
really strong.  The chassis side from Roush last year was really
stepping it up with Carl winning the last two races, so I think it’s
    perfect timing.”

  • G&K Services returns to JD Motorsports for 2011 season; starting at Daytona

GAFFNEY, S.C. (February 10, 2010) – After a limited involvement last season, G&K Services has returned to JD Motorsports with Mike Wallace driving the No. 01 Chevrolet beginning with the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway.

Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota; the uniform company has improved their association with the NASCAR Nationwide Series team by signing on as a primary marketing partner for six races this season. After the 300-mile race in Daytona on February 19, they will be on board for the Auto Club Speedway event in Fontana, Calif. The other primary races will be determined based on their sales regions.

“This is a great testament how a company can benefit from an association with our team,” said Johnny Davis, owner of JD Motorsports. “G&K Services were on board for a few races last year, and we’re happy to have them with us again this year. They decided to invest in more races this year based off the results they saw.

“This just proves how an affordable marketing plan can be beneficial in our series. Like everyone else, we’re still looking for more primary and associate partners. As a team, we’re very happy to have them on board again; especially for the Daytona race. Now, it’s up to Mike (Wallace) and Brad (Parrott, crew chief) to give G&K Services a good showing.”   About G&K Services Founded in 1902 by Alexander and Morris Gross in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, G&K Services today has nearly 8,000 employees throughout North America and processes more than five million garments each week from more than 160 locations. www.gkservices.com

  • Richert joins Hill and RWR in Nationwide campaign

Richert joins Hill and RWR in Nationwide campaign

When Doug Richert joined Rick Ware Racing(RWR) he felt right at home with a fleet of Roush-Fenway Mustangs at his control. The former crew chief for Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle at Roush-Fenway Racing just grinned as he walked through the small shop of RWR.

[media-credit name=”Rick Ware Racing” align=”alignleft” width=”266″][/media-credit]Richert, a thirty year veteran of calling the shots in NASCAR, will once again will give guidence to a young driver that few have heard of such as Timmy Hill.

Thirty years ago, Richert became the youngest Championship Crew Chief in history in 1980 winning the NASCAR Winston Cup title with a driver by the name of Dale Earnhardt.

The first championship of Earnhardt’s was just a start for Richert, who at the age of 20 had reached the pinnacle of his profession.

  • NOTES FROM THE NASCAR NATION: Rusty Wallace deserves phrase for his quick response to the Michael Annett situation

NOTES FROM THE NASCAR NATION: Rusty Wallace deserves phrase for his quick response to the Michael Annett situation

It’s a very safe bet to assume that Rusty Wallace had planned to spend last Sunday afternoon watching the Super Bowl along with the rest of his fellow Americans. Instead the former NASCAR champion, turned team owner and auto racing television broadcaster, found himself having to deal with some rather shocking news. That would be official notification regarding Michael Annett, his recently hired NASCAR Nationwide Series driver, who had been arrested for a quartet of charges including DWI, driving while intoxicated.

[media-credit name=”FMCM” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]According to reports from the Mooresville-North Carolina Police Department, as well as follow up reports from WCNC Channel 36 News in Charlotte, Annett was arrested following an auto accident that occurred sometime between 1:30 and 2 am last Sunday morning. An officer on the scene noticed Annett filling his mouth with a significant amount of breath mints and ordered a field sobriety test. The results of that tested turned up a blood alcohol count, (BAC), of .32 approximately four times the legal limit. The BAC limit for intoxication in North Carolina, like many other states, is .08.

According to the reports, Annett was alleged to have explained that the accident was caused while he was sending a text message on his cell phone. That resulted in additional citations for driving while texting as well as failure to reduce speed. The final charge was resisting arrest which allegedly stemmed from Annett’s initial refusal to be handcuffed by officers at the scene. He has been scheduled to appear in court sometime next month.

But one has to speculate that appearing before a judge pales in comparison to facing an angry Rusty Wallace. In a prepared team statement he said “Rusty Wallace Racing, (RWR), does not condone, nor tolerate, substance abuse by any of its employees.”

In fact, Wallace deserves high praise for his quick response by levying team sanctions on his new driver. Those sanctions include the successful completion of a comprehensive alcohol awareness program, a zero tolerance policy by Annett towards alcohol use and a mandatory participation in a year long community service program. Wallace also indicated that there was going to be additional “internal sanctions” against the errant driver but did not specify what those sanctions were going to be.

Wallace also noted that he was glad to see that Annett was not taking this incident lightly and truly believed that the public embarrassment that followed his arrest was a personal wake up call. Those sentiments were echoed in a prepared statement from the driver issued by RWR last Monday.

That statement said “I am deeply remorseful for my actions and my extreme lack of judgment. I let down my team, my sponsors, my fans and my family. I sincerely apologize to everyone that I hurt. This was truly a life changing moment for me. Despite all of the negativity that will undoubtedly arise from it, I am going to strive to use this incident as the impetus to make a lot of changes in my life.”

Whether or not Annett is going to face sanctions from NASCAR remains to be seen at this point in time. From a statement, issued last Monday, they said “NASCAR is in contact with Michael Annett’s owners at Rusty Wallace Racing to determine the facts of what happened. NASCAR will address the issue accordingly once we have a clear understanding of all the facts.”

Actually this incident is not the first time Annett found himself publicly apologizing for a moment of bad personal judgment while driving. Last Monday WCNC Channel 36 news produced a document, from the Charlotte area Department of Motor Vehicles, that indicated Annett triggered a three car accident, in July of last year that resulted in major damage to the vehicles as well as physical injury to one of the drivers. While this accident absolutely had nothing to do with alcohol, it was caused by Annett sending a text message while driving.

Last November 19th Michael Annett was practically jumping out of his driver’s uniform with joy. He had just been named to take over the wheel of RWR’s #62 Toyota Camry in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Making the deal even sweeter was the fact that his long time sponsor, Pilot Travel Centers, was only too happy to make the move with their young driver.

The true shame of this matter is the fact that it somewhat negates Annett’s hard work over the past three years towards developing his racing career. The 24 year old Des Moines-Iowa native moved to the southeast where he joined the ARCA Racing Series in 2008. He made quick work there by winning two races including ARCA’s annual signature event at Daytona. The 2009 and 2010 seasons found Annett driving for Germain Racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series where he finished 10th and 13th in the points standings.

It was very easy to see how a young, up and coming, driver with his own sponsorship contract would attract the attention of a team owner like Rusty Wallace. Despite the team embarrassment, resulting from last Sunday morning, Wallace announced that he was going to allow Annett to drive his car in the February 19th NASCAR Nationwide season opener at Daytona.

Annett’s forward progress in this race will be most interesting to watch. If there ever was a time for a young driver to run the race of a lifetime this is it.

  • Mike Wallace ready to take on new Daytona surface with some newness of his own

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 9, 2011) – Mike Wallace knows what it takes to tackle the high-banked action at Daytona International Speedway, and he’s proven it before with three trips to Victory Lane.

Now, the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver for JD Motorsports just needs to take that winning knowledge of the 2.5-mile superspeedway and apply it to the newly-paved surface, while driving a newly-designed race car, with a new crew chief and a newly-structured points system. For a veteran like Wallace – that’s no problem.

This year marks the third season Wallace will pilot the No. 01 Chevrolet for JD Motorsports. After pairing together for the past two seasons, owner Johnny Davis brought in winning-crew chief Brad Parrott to lead the team’s on-track effort this season.

The new points system not only favors the fans by making it easier to add them up after a race, but the new NASCAR rule where a driver can only declare for championship points in one series favors that series’ regulars.

All these changes were just fine with Wallace, who has won in three different series at Daytona.

Track Facts for Wallace:In 21 NNS starts at the Daytona, Wallace has completed 2,154 of 2,376 laps (90.7 percent) earning one victory, two top-fives and four top-10 finishes. He’s also led 35 laps, with his victory coming in the 2004 July race by leading the only – and most important – one at the checkered flag. Wallace has also won a Camping World Truck Series (Feb. 2000) race and an ARCA event (1994) at Daytona.

Owner’s Points Ease Pressure:By finishing 25th in the 2010 NNS Owner’s Standings, Wallace won’t have to worry about qualifying for the first five races as the top 30 are good to go already.

Car Facts:JD Motorsports is bringing down the same car they used in the June 2010 race at Michigan International Speedway. After four races with the new car last year, the NNS will utilize the car in all races this season.

Mike Wallace quotes About the new season and points system: “I am so ready for the 2011 season to start. We’ve been working on our cars in the shop and Brad Parrott has really done a great job in the short time he’s been with us at JD Motorsports. The new points are easier to add up for everyone when the race is over and I like how it’s structured. If you want to gain five more points, you have to pass five more cars, not two if you’re running in the mid-pack or one if you’re up front. By NASCAR making drivers declare for championship points in only one series, it gives teams like us a chance to have true Nationwide rankings. I like what they’ve done in that area.

Being in on Owner’s Points: “Let me tell you something about that deal. We came here in 2009 having to qualify in on time. There’s an enough pressure to start the season off right after working on your Daytona cars through a lot of the off season. To come down here and sweat it out to make the race is awful. Thank goodness we ended up where we did last year to know we’re good to go for the first five this season. We just need to concentrate on racing, which is a good thing.”

Key to Winning at Daytona: “I have been fortunate to win three races at Daytona. Each one is special because of the history of all the winners at this track. I feel we have just a good of a chance as anyone to get to Victory Lane here. That’s one thing about the draft – it’s the great equalizer. Everyone I’ve talked to who tested here already said the track is incredibly smooth and has great grip. Aside from the draft, you just need to race smart and be there at the end when they wave the checkered flag. New track, new cars, new crew chief – what more could a driver ask for to start a new season.

  • Tire Kingdom to Sponsor Todd Bodine’s Trifecta Attempt During Daytona Speedweeks

Germain Racing driver is entered in Daytona 500, Nationwide and Truck events at Daytona International Speedway

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 9, 2011) — Tire Kingdom®, a leading brand of automotive service centers for the Florida-based TBC Retail Group, announced that it will be the primary sponsor in Todd Bodine’s quest to compete in NASCAR’s three national racing series for Germain Racing at Daytona International Speedway.

A 36-time NASCAR winner, Bodine is entered in the No. 30 Tire Kingdom Toyota Tundra for the Feb. 18 Camping World Truck Series race, the No. 15 Tire Kingdom Toyota Camry for the Feb. 19 Nationwide Series event and the No. 60 Tire Kingdom Toyota Camry for the Feb. 20 Daytona 500 Sprint Cup Series opener.

Bodine’s vehicles for the season-opening races will also carry associate sponsorship from Valvoline and TBC Retail’s other automotive service centers — NTB – National Tire and Battery®, Merchant’s Tire and Auto Centers® and Big O Tires®.

“Featuring Tire Kingdom as the primary on these vehicles is a great complement to our automotive service centers in the Florida market,” said Bob Crostarosa, senior vice president of marketing and advertising, TBC Retail Group. “We are able to maintain the consistent theme of our Service Central Racing program. The red, white and blue color scheme is synonymous with integrity, trustworthiness, and quality, which is the foundation of Service Central® and our service centers Tire Kingdom, NTB-National Tire and Battery, Merchant’s Tire and Big O Tires.”

Bodine is the reigning and two-time NASCAR truck season champion. Since 2005 – his first season driving full time for Germain Racing — he has never finished lower than fourth in the season point standings. Along with winning the series title last year, he also took home the truck championship in 2006.

Bodine’s truck record at Daytona has been impeccable with two wins, two runners-up, a third and a fifth for a finishing average of 2.3 in six starts. Bodine’s overall truck record includes: 21 wins, 82 top fives and 106 top 10s in 165 starts.

“I am very excited to have Tire Kingdom and Valvoline for all of my races in Daytona and being part of the Service Central Racing program,” said Bodine. “It does not happen often that you get to represent one great company, let alone two in all three races in a weekend. Hopefully with a little luck we can run up front and get into Victory Lane.”

Bodine, a native of Chemung, N.Y. and the youngest (46) of the three famous racing brothers with Geoffrey and Brett, has a career total of 238 Cup starts (including four in the Daytona 500) and 324 Nationwide Series starts. He has captured 15 victories in the Nationwide Series.

“It is with great honor that we can bring world class brands such as Tire Kingdom, Service Central and Valvoline together with Germain Racing and our reigning NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion, Todd Bodine,” said team owner Bob Germain Jr.  “It is a perfect complement in both brand and sport, and a partnership we are very much looking forward to cultivating as we have done with Valvoline.”

Germain, along with brothers Steve and Rick, formed Germain Racing in 2004. The team has collected six consecutive top-five point finishes in the Truck Series, including two championships, 22 wins and nine pole awards. Danica Patrick’s 2011 NASCAR Schedule Announced

Patrick to compete in 12 Nationwide Series races with JR Motorsports, 11 with Go Daddy

[media-credit name=”David Yeazell” align=”alignright” width=”133″][/media-credit]MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 9, 2011) – Danica Patrick, the 28-year-old racer who transitioned into NASCAR Nationwide Series competition last year with JR Motorsports in the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet, has finalized her 2011 Nationwide Series plans.  JR Motorsports general manager Kelley Earnhardt, on behalf of the team and primary sponsor GoDaddy.com, announced those plans today.

Patrick’s tour will closely resemble her rookie campaign in that she will compete in a cluster of races on the front and back ends of the Nationwide Series schedule. She will appear in select races during the middle parts of the year while competing full time in the IZOD IndyCar Series. Patrick’s 2011 NASCAR plans feature 12 races across 10 NASCAR markets. Four of those markets will host Patrick for the first time in a stock car.

As announced last October, Patrick will compete in the first four Nationwide Series races – Daytona International Speedway (Feb. 19), Phoenix International Raceway (Feb. 26), Las Vegas Motor Speedway (March 5) and Bristol Motor Speedway (March 19).

Patrick will continue with races at Chicagoland Speedway (June 4), Daytona International Speedway (July 1), Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Aug. 20), Richmond International Speedway (Sept. 9), and Kansas Speedway (Oct. 8). She will conclude her second NASCAR season with the final three races on the Nationwide Series schedule — Texas Motor Speedway (Nov. 5), Phoenix International Raceway (Nov. 12) and Homestead-Miami Speedway (Nov. 19).

“This is going to be an exciting year in the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet,” said Patrick, who scored a career-best fifth-place start and 19th-place finish in the 2010 finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. “I have a much different perspective heading into this season. I know a little more of what to expect, and I’m not as out of my element. I’ve had a year to work with my team, and there is a comfort level that comes with returning to some of these tracks. It’s obvious experience goes a long way in this sport. Thanks to everyone at Go Daddy and JR Motorsports that have been incredibly supportive throughout this process.”

Race tracks that were not on Patrick’s 2010 schedule but among her 2011 plans are Bristol, Richmond, Kansas and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, which is located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Patrick has raced at Richmond and Kansas in the IZOD IndyCar Series. GoDaddy.com sponsors Patrick in both open-wheel and stock car racing.

“Danica is smart, she’s beautiful and she’s successfully competing in a male-dominated sport,” said Bob Parsons, the company’s CEO and founder. “To jump into a stock car and take on veteran NASCAR drivers is a testament to Danica’s grit – our Go Daddy Girl is an undeniable inspiration for anyone who dreams big!”   GoDaddy.com, the world’s largest Web hosting provider and top domain name registrar, will serve as primary sponsor for 11 of the 12 races with Patrick on the No. 7 Chevrolet. This season marks Patrick’s fifth year as a Go Daddy Girl for the Internet powerhouse. • A points system an Alabama mathematician can work out

A points system an Alabama mathematician can work out

It has been an interesting off-season in NASCAR, and I’m not just talking about the snow in Dallas. We learned things, like the best mathematicians hail from such places as Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and the Carolinas. For more than 30 years, afficionados in those locales have been able to figure out the sport’s points system, but it was deemed too tough for the newbees to master.

[media-credit name=”David Yeazell” align=”alignright” width=”189″][/media-credit]So, that brings us to the latest revamp of the way NASCAR determines its season champions. One point to the 43rd placed entry, 43 points for the winner, a 3 point victor bonus, a point for leading a lap, and one more for leading the most. I’m guessing that should be easy enough for those beleaguered Princeton and Harvard types to decipher.

The top ten make the Chase, have their points rejigged to 2000 to put them out of reach of the mere mortals, with three bonus points for each win up to that point. Among those sitting 11th to 20th, the most wins combined with the most points determines two more wildcard Chasers. If that proves too much for a potential fan to figure out, might I suggest soccer as a sport of choice. I mean, all one needs to is a field, a ball, and two pairs of rubber boots to play and the point count is usually so low anybody can calculate the winner.

In case you are wondering, according to my calculator, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick would have tied for the most points in the Chase using the new system, with Johnson getting the nod based on wins. You can’t get much closer than that. In a perfect world, wins should be worth more, but fans would quit watching if the final events merely led to a coronation. Too bad they can’t promote each race based on its own merits, but this is not a perfect world.

In a perfect world, Tony Stewart could take a working holiday to Australian and not get into a dust up. A flying helmet followed by some flying fists highlighted a trip that apparently also involved some actual racing, but no one is too interested in that aspect of the story. If that did not provide enough gossip, then surely the court ruling that makes the details of the Brian and Megan France divorce public should. Hey, it is not that I don’t love hearing things that are none of my damn business. I mean, I am human after all.

Crew Chief Frank Stoddard has a new racing team. That should give us another contender for that single point for each race, provided they qualify, before parking due to handling or vibration issues, or just not having enough money to buy tires or fuel to run an entire event. At least we won’t see anymore catch cans leaving the pits, as the new fuelling system eliminates that can and the guy holding it. No doubt another example of technology eliminating American jobs.

We hear Mark Martin will keep racing beyond 2011 and his tenure with Hendrick. Hopefully he really will get a chance to actually race, and not be just a part of the not-ready-for-prime timers. You just don’t tie a race horse, even an aging one, up to a beer wagon.

Sometimes the champagne set isn’t worth getting tied up with. Richard Petty Motorsports lives again, but no thanks to former partner George Gillett. After taking over Ray Evernham’s operation, merging it with Petty’s, Gillett is now long gone. It only took him three years to hit the bricks in NASCAR, only four years before losing his Liverpool soccer ownership, and just over nine before walking away from the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens. Anyone else notice a trend here?

Yet, some things last. Like a big track at Daytona, engines roaring to life, and a multitude of drivers, owners, crews, sponsors, and fans getting together to open yet another NASCAR season. The track is the same, but new asphalt now covers it which should make things very interesting when action resumes in a few short days.

There are questions that we seek answers to. Is Jimmie Johnson going to raise the hardware again come November, or is it Jeff Gordon’s turn for five. Maybe Tony Stewart, or a Busch brother has a date with destiny, or a fairy tale finish for Mark Martin? Will we see a return of Dale Earnhardt Jr to prominence? Will we notice a difference in the cars with a more streamlined splitter and factory inspired noses? One thing is for certain, with the curtain dropped on football and baseball still a few months away, the time for the cars to return has returned. You don’t have to be an Alabama mathematician to figure out that this is a good thing.
