Despite Challenges, Bridget Finds Personal Success at Phoenix

TOOELE, UT, March 15, 2021 – Bridget Burgess and her team BMI Racing rolled into Phoenix on Friday for the first round of the ARCA Menards Series West race. This race was a combined race with the ARCA Menards Series with a stacked field of 30 cars.

The goal for the weekend was to finish the race and to continue to gain experience in a new car.

The day started of with a hour practice, which provided the opportunity for Bridget to get accustomed to her new HMH Construction Chevrolet. Even though Bridget was able to do a shake down at her home base at Utah Motorsports Campus, the practice session allowed Bridget the opportunity to really see what the car was capable of doing on the 1 mile oval.

Unfortunately, the clouds rolled in and it started to rain 10 minutes before qualifying was set to start. Qualifying ultimately was cancelled and the field was set by practice times with Bridget and the HMH Construction Chevrolet starting in 24th.

The green flag finally dropped after a 25 minute delay for the rain and track drying, and the 30 car field accelerated past the start/finish line. Bridget had a solid start but just as soon as the race started, the caution flag waived for and accident in turn one. Bridget avoided the wreck and provided the update that the car felt good and got ready for the restart.

As Bridget was nearing the half way point she lost fuel pressure and needed a push back to her pit box. The team finished up pushing the car behind pit wall to try and identify and solve the issue. The diagnosis being a fuel pick up problem and with the help of others, the team managed to get the HMH Construction Chevrolet fired up and back on track.

Bridget got back on track 32 laps down from the leaders, and with little chance of improving her overall position, Bridget and her spotter worked together on improving her race lines, passing and racecraft. Bridget and the HMH Construction Chevrolet finished the race in 22nd place.

Bridget is powered by these great companies: HMH Construction, GEARWRENCH, Rugged Radios, Cometic Gasket, Ferrea Racing Components, FK Rod Ends, Fragola Performance Systems, GC Cooling Fan, GT Radial, Hawk Performance, Impact Race Products, K&N Filters, Konig, Miller Electric, ProAm, PSC Motorsports, Sunoco Race Fuel, Tilton, XS Power

  • Sioux Chief Showdown Gets New Look

Sioux Chief Showdown Gets New Look

2021 Showdown Set to Kick Off May 22 at Toledo Speedway

Toledo, Oh. (March 12, 2021) – During MAVTV’s live broadcast of Friday’s General Tire 150 at Phoenix Raceway, the Automobile Racing Club of America and Sioux Chief Manufacturing unveiled a new logo for the Sioux Chief Showdown, ARCA’s “Series within the greater ARCA Menards Series” for 2021.

The new Sioux Chief Showdown logo represents a modernized look, updated from the original “Short Track Challenge” logo that carried over prior to 2020, when the Showdown was formed upon inclusion of the ARCA Menards Series East and West into the overall ARCA Menards Series platform.

“The new logo symbolizes an evolution and extension of the original series,” stated Joe Ismert, President of Sioux Chief Manufacturing. “The partnership with ARCA, Menards, and NASCAR has been tremendous. Last year the series went coast to coast and allowed ARCA Menards East, West, and Premier series drivers and teams to compete at 10 select races as the series became the Sioux Chief Showdown. We are proud to likewise unveil a new logo for the series.”

The Sioux Chief Showdown is a 10-race championship designed to allow drivers not eligible to run the entire ARCA Menards Series the chance to race for a championship. Showdown events are held at oval tracks one mile in length or shorter and road courses. Drivers must be 18 or older to run at most tracks larger than one mile, while drivers as young as 15 can compete on oval tracks one mile in length and under and road courses. Sioux Chief’s involvement within the ARCA Menards Series has been almost exclusively tied to the series’ short track events. In 2015 and 2016, Sioux Chief served as the event entitlement sponsor for ARCA’s annual visit to Lucas Oil Raceway in suburban Indianapolis, as well as supporting ARCA TV broadcasts.

In 2017, Sioux Chief made a significant increase in support to the series, taking over the naming rights for what was then named the Sioux Chief Short Track Challenge, followed by another significant increase in support in 2020 when teams participating in the Showdown races competed for nearly $1 million in race purses, point fund awards, and bonus programs.

The 2021 Sioux Chief Showdown kicks off with the May 22 race at Toledo Speedway. Other Showdown events are June 4 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, July 10 at Elko Speedway, July 17 at Berlin Raceway, July 24 at Iowa Speedway, July 31 at Winchester Speedway, August 6 at Watkins Glen International, August 29 at The Milwaukee Mile, September 16 at Bristol Motor Speedway, and October 2 at Salem Speedway. Please visit ARCARacing.com for complete event schedule, race ticket, and broadcast information.

Sioux Chief Manufacturing is a family-owned American corporation that designs and manufactures rough plumbing products, parts, and accessories for residential, commercial, industrial and government applications. Sioux Chief is based in Peculiar, Missouri, and also sells products under the Tomahawk brand. Sioux Chief was founded in 1957 by Martin E. Ismert, Jr. (Ed). The company’s promotional and packaging designs typically feature the bust of Red Cloud, an historic prominent leader of the Native American Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe. Red Cloud is Sioux Chief’s current official logo. The logo was created and drawn by Ed’s brother, Cornielius “Bud” Ismert, a commercial artist.

Sioux Chief first partnered with ARCA and series sponsor Menards in 2015. The business-to-business relationship between Menards, the country’s third-largest home improvement retail chain, and Sioux Chief, a leading rough plumbing manufacturer and supplier of cutting-edge products for plumbing and mechanical contractors, brings opportunities for Sioux Chief to promote its products to the Menards contractor and customer base.

“Sioux Chief is an important partner to both Menards and ARCA,” commented Jeff Abbott, Menards Spokesperson and Promotions Manager. “Sioux Chief is a great vendor supplier for our contractors, and a terrific sponsor within the ARCA Menards Series.”

Sioux Chief’s product line is divided into three core groups: Supply, Drainage and Support. Sioux Chief’s customers also include various building industry professionals such as engineers and builders, and…Menards contractors.

Sioux Chief is a Buy American Compliant company which manufactures more than 90% of the products it sells. DGR ARCA Menards Series Recap: Phoenix Raceway

    Friday, March 12
Track: Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway, one-mile paved tri-oval
    Race: 2 of 20
Event: General Tire 150 (150 laps, 150 miles)

Taylor Gray, No. 17 Ripper Coffee Company Ford Fusion

    Start: 4th
    Finish: 9th

Qualifying was rained out and the field was lined up by practice speeds, thus slotting the No. 17 in the fourth starting position.
Gray held steady in fourth for the opening 57 laps before caution flag waved. On the ensuing restart, he would launch from the outside front row to first and lead the remaining 11 laps until the lap 75 caution break.

The Ripper Coffee Fusion came down pit road for four tires and fuel, but ARCA officials ruled that the team changed tires and fueled the car at the same time and assessed a 2-lap penalty. After restarting 18th, Gray advanced up to the 10th position as the first car two laps down when caution waved on lap 120.

A lap 143 yellow allowed the team to gain one lap back for the final dash to the end, but ultimately Gray was credited with a ninth-place finish, one lap down.

Thad Moffitt, No. 46 CleanPacs Ford Fusion

    Start: 9th
    Finish: 3rd

With qualifying rained out, Moffitt’s No. 46 CleanPacs Fusion started the race from the ninth position as a result of practice speed.
Moffitt quickly moved to sixth in the opening laps of the race and was running there when caution waved on lap 57. The team elected to stay out and vaulted to second on the restart behind teammate Taylor Gray and would ultimately be third when the yellow flag came out for the lap 75 break.

The CleanPacs team opted to take fresh tires and fuel during the break, but received a penalty for removing equipment from the pit box and had to restart at the tail end of the lead lap in ninth.

When the caution came out on lap 120, Moffitt was up to fourth. The leaders came down pit road and the No. 46 stayed out and inherited the lead for the restart. Fresh tires quickly prevailed and when caution waved again on lap 143, Moffitt was in fourth.
On the final restart, the green and white flag were waved simultaneously setting up a one lap dash to the finish and Moffitt brought the No. 46 CleanPacs Fusion across the stripe in third.

Next event: General Tire 200 at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama on April 24 at 1 p.m. ET.

    Toni Breidinger Pre-Race Quotes:

How do you feel about going to Phoenix Raceway this weekend?

“I’m excited to be in Phoenix because it’s a combination race between the ARCA Menards Series and ARCA West and I’ll be up against other drivers that I grew up racing go-karts with.

“I feel like it’s going to be a really good race. It is another track that’s been around a long time.”

Talk about your first race at Young’s Motorsports at Daytona. Were you satisfied with your performance?

“I started 31st, moved my way up to 10th, had an error, and then finished the race on the lead lap and managed to avoid all the wrecks.

“Those were my main goals; finish the race, avoid any wrecks and finish on the lead lap. So, mission accomplished, but I’ll be looking for more at Talladega next month.”

What is the goal this weekend at Phoenix?

“The goal is definitely to complete all the laps, finish the race and learn the track the best that I can.

“Achieving those three things would be a success for my team and I and momentum to carry to the next ARCA Menards Series race.”

What have you been doing to prepare yourself for this weekend’s race?

“I’ve been on the simulator training as well as working out. Both help me with my focus on the track and are really the best ways to get ready for an upcoming race during COVID-19.”

    • Johnston has called the shots for 17 NASCAR Cup Series races at the one-mile tri-oval with five top-five and eight top-10 finishes between Martin Truex Jr., Tony Stewart and Kyle Larson. Last fall was his first time serving as an ARCA crew chief.
    • Gray’s older brother, Tanner, piloted the No. 17 Ford Performance Fusion to a fourth-place result in last year’s March event at Phoenix.

Gray on Phoenix: “The last few races at Phoenix the No. 17 has run really well with my brother in the spring and then me in the fall. To finish third in my first race at the track was pretty cool and I think we have a great opportunity to back that up with another solid run this time. It will be my first race with the Ripper Coffee colors on the car, so hopefully we can give them a good showing.”

Thad Moffitt, No. 46 CleanPacs Ford Fusion

    • Moffitt will make his second career start at Phoenix Raceway on Friday night. His previous start at the one-mile racetrack came on March 6 of last year with an 18th-place result after an accident on lap 127.
    • In addition to the March race, crew chief Derek Smith returned to Phoenix in November for the ARCA West race with David Gilliland and the No. 4 Ford Fusion. The duo swept the weekend by qualifying on the pole and leading 23 laps en route to victory.
    • CleanPacs brand by Aqua ChemPacs returns as primary sponsor of the No. 46 Ford Fusion for Phoenix after adorning the quarter panels in the season opener at Daytona. Moffitt will carry the blue and green colors in five additional ARCA Menards Series events – Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, Iowa Speedway and Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Moffitt on Phoenix: “Phoenix is a super fun racetrack and one of my favorite that we go to. When you get guys to move up and use the traction compound it opens the track up and allows you to use multiple lanes throughout the race. Restarts are insane too with everyone fanning out 4-5 wide through the dogleg. There are a lot of great cars entered for this weekend, so it should be an awesome race.”

    • After restarting in second, the No. 17 was moved out of the preferred racing groove and fell to seventh during the opening three laps. Gray was able to advance up to fifth by lap 181 in which there was a caution. On the final restart, he picked up one additional position to finish third.

    • Over the course of the final 50 laps, Iest drove the No. 54 as high as fourth and fell back as far as seventh, but after a caution on lap 181 he was able to slot into the fifth position and earn his second consecutive top-five finish for DGR.

  • Sammy Smith dominates Pensacola 200 en route to first ARCA victory

Sammy Smith dominates Pensacola 200 en route to first ARCA victory

After qualifying on the pole, Joe Gibbs Racing driver, Sammy Smith, in his second season with the team, scored his first ARCA Menards East Series victory at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida. Smith battled with Taylor Gray and then dominated the final segment by leading most of the laps.

“I can’t thank the team enough, they did a really good job,” Smith told NBC Sports. “The first part of the race, we weren’t very good. We fought back and made some good adjustments. Can’t thank Mark McFarland (Crew Chief) and the whole Engine ice team enough for a great Toyota Camry.”

The ARCA Menards East Series headed to Pensacola, Florida for the second race of the 2021 season. A total of 13 cars took the green flag, including Smith who qualified on the pole with a time of 17.49 seconds and 102.898 mph. There were two segment breaks, one at Lap 75 and another at Lap 150.

    Segment 1: Lap 1 – Lap 75

There was plenty of action in the first segment, mainly between Taylor Gray and Smith. Smith and Gray swapped the lead multiple times before Smith had the advantage. The first caution of the race was on Lap 55 when the No. 12 of Stephanie Moyer, who was making her ARCA debut for Andy Hillenburg, was stalled in Turn(s) 3 and 4.

The restart came on Lap 69, just six laps shy of the first halfway break. Gray, the Denver, North Carolina native, passed Smith for the lead and would remain the leader at the first segment break. Daniel Dye, Sammy Smith, Rajah Caruth, Mason Diaz, Parker Retzlaff, Joey Iest, Carson Kvapil, Max Gutierrez and Stephanie Moyer rounded out the Top 10.

    Second Segment: Lap 78 – Lap 150

As the second segment got underway, there was a new leader in town as Daniel Dye, in the No. 43, took over the lead from Gray. Dye led for a brief while, but the lead ultimately went back to Gray. Shortly before halfway, Smith started to reel in race leader Gray and eventually passed Gray for the lead once again. Despite the back and forth between the two, Gray fought off Smith to be the leader once more at the second segment break. Smith, Dye, Caruth, Iest, Diaz, Retzlaff, Kvapil, Gutierrez and Moyer were the Top 10 when the red flag fell.

    Third segment: Lap 154 – Lap 200

Just one caution slowed the final segment with 19 to go. The No. 12 of Moyer once again came to a stop in Turn 1, setting up a late-race restart with under 15 to go.

The action got a little intense upfront as the leaders were jockeying for position and both Sammy Smith and Mason Diaz were looking for their first-ever wins in ARCA competition. However, when the checkered flag flew, Sammy Smith scored the victory by .044 seconds over Diaz.

Unfortunately for Diaz, the Manassas, Virginia native, will have to wait for another race if he wants to have a shot at the victory.

“(It) was actually a good night for us,” Diaz said to NBC Sports after his runner-up finish. “We restarted there in fifth in the last segment and worked our way through. On the last restart, I actually thought we had a chance for them, but I had nothing for them. Second place, that’s a good finish for us here. So far this year, nothing but top five’s and I hope we can carry that on.”

There were four cautions for 15 laps and six lead changes among three different leaders.

  • Max Gutiérrez leads ARCA Menards Series East charge to Five Flags

Max Gutiérrez leads ARCA Menards Series East charge to Five Flags

PENSACOLA, Fla.: Rette Jones Racing development driver Max Gutiérrez is still gleaming after picking up a thrilling victory in the Jeep Beach 175 at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway, but the ARCA Menards Series East rookie driver knows once he puts on his helmet this weekend at Five Flags (Fla.) Speedway, it will be time to put the joyous emotions aside and concentrate.

Not only is Gutiérrez focused on producing back-to-back ARCA East victories for Rette Jones Racing, but he is determined to protect his points lead ahead of Saturday’s Pensacola 200 presented by INSPECTRA.

“It has been a few good weeks,” explained Gutiérrez who returned home to Mexico shortly after the victory at New Smyrna.

“It has been fun to celebrate the win with family, friends and my partners – but as the days approach to Five Flags, I realize it’s time to be thankful for the blessings of New Smyrna but get focused on the job ahead this weekend.”

Attending school, Gutiérrez has had to rely on video and international texting platforms to communicate with crew chief and co-owner Mark Rette about the team’s plan for the second ARCA Menards Series East race of 2021.

While Gutiérrez does have laps at Five Flags from last October, the former NASCAR Mexico Challenge Series champion knows a tall task awaits him for practice on Saturday afternoon.

“I have laps at Five Flags, but we had some problems there last year. The track is very demanding and unfortunately, we didn’t have a balanced race car which made it a challenging race.

“Thankfully, I’ve been able to talk to Mark and the team a lot over the past couple of weeks. He has helped me with a lot of my questions and even given me some homework to look over.

“Practice will be super important and from there it’s putting up another good lap in qualifying and being at the right place at the right time when it comes to the checked flag.”

With just a three-point gap over Sammy Smith in the ARCA Menards Series East champion standings, Gutiérrez realizes with a win in the bank, the bigger picture is a priority.

“We want to win again, but if that opportunity doesn’t present itself, we don’t need to put ourselves in a spot where we give points away and take us out of the championship. It’s only race two of eight, but we are points racing. Hopefully, we leave Pensacola on Saturday night with the points lead still intact.”

Set for his third career ARCA East start, Gutiérrez knows without support, this weekend would not be possible.

“I cannot thank my partners TOUGHBUILT, TekNekk, Telcel (Jimmy Morales) and Avaya enough for this chance to fight for another win and of course for Rette Jones Racing for the opportunity to drive their race cars.

“We had a lot of fun at New Smyrna and I’d love to have a repeat on Saturday night.”

Rette says he’s proud of Gutiérrez’s initiatives and believes they can be in the hunt for the third career win for RJR.

“Max had never been to New Smyrna before the end of January and look what we did two weeks ago,” added Rette. “I think Max surprised a lot of people in qualifying – with a front row start and only added to it with an exclamation point with the win.

“Hopefully, we can make it double exclamation points this weekend.”

RJR is co-owned by Canadian entrepreneur and former race car driver Terry Jones.

The Pensacola 200 presented by INSPECTRA (200 laps | 100 miles) is the second of eight races on the 2021 ARCA Menards Series East schedule. Practice begins for the one-day show on Saturday, February 27 from 12:15 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. General Tire pole qualifying is set for later in the day at 2:30 p.m. The event will take the green flag just after 5:00 p.m. with live television coverage on TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold. All times are local (CT).

The event will be rebroadcasted on a tape-delayed basis on NBCSN on Thurs., Mar. 4, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. ET.
