Ty Gibbs Grabs Dominating ARCA Pocono Win

Ty Gibbs took the victory after starting in the second position in dominating fashion at Pocono Raceway on Friday.

Gibbs took the lead early on lap 13 and held on through both competition cautions at lap 20 and lap 50. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver only lost the lead a couple of times, but was the class of the field in the remaining laps of the Anywhere Is Possible 200. Hoping for no caution, Gibbs fended off Chandler Smith and Sam Mayer for the win.

“Yeah, I had that happened to me at Phoenix this year,” Gibbs said hoping for no late race yellows. “I was being prepared for it, so I just kept going. I couldn’t quite get away from that 20 (Chandler Smith) because he was a little faster than me. I was really on nerves. I come here to win and I try to have a positive attitude, and that’s how I get through my days.”

Michael Self started on the pole based on Owner Points. Gibbs was second, while Drew Dollar, Chandler Smith and Bret Holmes rounded out the top five starting positions.

The first caution of the night flew early on lap 2. Thad Moffitt in the No. 46 DGR-Crosley machine had an engine expire and left him out of the race early. Due to the expiration of his engine, Moffitt was regulated to last place, finishing 20th.

Another driver had issues as the green flag dropped. In fact, it was Moffitt’s teammate Tanner Gray, who changed lanes before the start/finish line. Gray was penalized, as a driver cannot change their lanes before the green flag drops. By doing so, the DGR-Crosley driver, had to serve the penalty on pit road.

After the lap 9 restart, Venturini Motorsports driver Chandler Smith, took the lead momentarily. Though, it wasn’t long, until Gibbs had command on lap 13 and held his presence at the top spot through the first competition caution on lap 20. Self, Smith, Holmes, Mayer, Dollar, Griffith, Gray, Deegan, and Sean Corr were the top 10 drivers when the yellow flew.

The green flag would fly again for a restart at lap 24. Michael Self in the No. 25 Toyota was back in the lead again and looked to settle in as the leader. However, Gibbs car was just too strong for Self to hold off, as he was passed by Gibbs on lap 27.

Before the next competition caution on lap 50, there were a couple of notable incidents. The first on lap 32, where the No. 82 of Sean Corr was slow on the track. Despite being slow, Corr made it back to pit road without a yellow being flown. The second incident was seen on lap 38, this time an actual yellow was flown for Tanner Gray, who had hit the wall hard on the backstretch. The New Mexico native first Pocono run was cut short, as Gray would be credited with a 15th place finishing position.

An eight lap dash to the lap 50 comp yellow made the action exciting for a few laps. Gibbs once again led the field to lap 50 with Smith, Self, Mayer, Deegan, Dollar, Holmes, Griffith, Kitzmiller, and Huff the top 10 for the second comp yellow.

Shortly after the restart with 26 to go, a wreck by Jason Kitzmiller on the frontstretch slowed the pace once more, and brought out another yellow. Kitzmiller was okay from the incident, but placed 14th in the final running order after running in the top 10 for portions of the race.

From lap 59 to lap 80, there was a 21 lap green flag run to the finish that saw no yellow. Gibbs was out front, but did have a couple of challengers late in the going. Sam Mayer in the GMS entry tried to close the gap with 15 to go, but to no avail. Meanwhile, Mayer got passed by Chandler Smith for second with 13 to go, and set eyes on Gibbs.

Though, Gibbs proved no match for the field, as Smith ran out of time to catch him and the Joe Gibbs Racing driver went on to take his third career ARCA Menards Series victory.

There were five cautions for 24 laps and four lead changes among three different leaders.

Gibbs led twice for 65 laps en route to victory.

  • ARCA Menards Series Preview – Pocono I

ARCA Menards Series Preview – Pocono I

The ARCA Menards Series returned to the track at Talladega Superspeedway last weekend and continues their schedule this weekend by going north to Pocono Raceway.

The Anywhere Is Possible 200 presented by General Tire will mark the fourth race on the 2020 schedule and features 21 cars on the entry list.

On the entry list, there will be some new faces as that is normally the case for the ARCA Menards Series. Of the 21 cars, Russ Lane, Clay Greenfield, Derek Griffith, Ryan Huff, Sam Mayer, Tanner Gray, Hailie Deegan, Drew Dollar and Ty Gibbs will all make their Pocono debut this Friday afternoon.

However, despite those drivers who have not competed at Pocono before, one team has plenty of experience and that’s Venturini Motorsports.

Venturini Motorsports will have drivers Deegan, Drew Dollar, Chandler Smith, and Michael Self in the field.

Self has the most starts out of the stable with three and has a best finish third twice (2017 and 2019). Even though, the Utah native was able to gain a top five finish last year, Self notes that Pocono has been tricky for him but does have enough confidence to perform well.

“Pocono Raceway has been a little bit tough for me to really grasp in the past. I really like the track, but its definitely difficult. Last year we were able to snag a third-place finish, but I left feeling like I just wasn’t where I wanted to be with my level of comfort there. I’ve spent a lot of time watching video and asking questions to people that have had success there and I have a few things in mind that I’m anxious to try this weekend. It’ll be interesting with such a limited practice session, but I’ve got confidence that the No. 25 Sinclair Oil Toyota Camry team are bringing a solid car as always and I can just go in and work on the things I want.”

For Drew Dollar, Pocono couldn’t have come at a better timing. The Venturini driver is coming off a win at Talladega last weekend and has momentum heading into his Pocono start Friday. Dollar is ready to get back in the No. 15 and have an exceptional outing.

“I’m looking forward to carrying the momentum we have from winning at Talladega Superspeedway into Pocono Raceway this weekend. We’ll have limited practice and I’ve never been to Pocono before, but I’m confident that I will be able to quickly get up to speed. I know my Venturini Motorsports Toyota Camry is going to be really good and I can’t wait to get back to the track.”

Back in the field this weekend and making his second ARCA start this year is Chandler Smith. Notably, the Georgia native recorded one start, which came last year where Smith placed eighth after starting third.

“I’m looking forward to getting back in my No. 20 JBL Toyota Camry with Venturini Motorsports. It’s been a long downtime and I am excited at being able to be back at a racetrack.”

As for DGR-Crosley they will have Hailie Deegan, Thad Moffitt, and Tanner Gray once again.

Moffitt has three starts at Pocono with a best finish of 11th, which came in 2019. The DGR-Crosley crew will have a brand new Ford body to the No. 46 machine.

“Pocono is very unique and challenging. I’ve kind of struggled there in the past, but I think I have a better shot this year. I’m in better equipment and I’ve got a better starting spot already based on 2020 points, so I’m pretty confident going into this. DGR-Crosley is bringing fast cars to the track right now and all of our Fusions have been fast so far this year. I think we’ll just keep it up going into Pocono and I believe that we have a good shot at running top three and possibly winning the race this weekend.”

Tanner Gray is back in the No. 17 Ford Performance entry. Gray makes his Pocono debut this weekend and will be a busy driver as he is scheduled to pull double duty by competing in the Truck race as well. The New Mexico native hopes this weekend his luck will start turning around.

“I don’t know what I need to do to turn my luck around on both the ARCA and Truck Series sides. I might need to start looking for four-leaf clovers, or put a lucky horseshoe in my hauler, or something. I’m looking forward to racing twice at Pocono this weekend. This will be my first time there, so getting the extra seat time in the ARCA car will help me on Saturday since I’ll already be familiar with the track. Thad (Moffitt) has raced there twice before, so I’ll probably lean on him for some advice, as well as David (Gilliland, team co-owner) since he’s got a lot of experience there.”

Even though Talladega was a new experience to Hailie Deegan last weekend, Pocono will somewhat not be new to the California native as she recorded one start that came last year. Deegan started fourth and placed seventh, two laps down in the running order. She notes that she enjoys the challenges Pocono bring and has been using the simulator to get extra track time in.

“Pocono is a fun track. It’s really hard to get your car set up and good for every single corner. I think going there with DGR-Crosley, with all the guys working hard here, that I’m going to come with a good set-up. I’ve been on the simulator a lot and getting a lot of practice. I’ve been trying a lot of different stuff seeing what I’m comfortable with and seeing what we want to baseline with since we’re not getting much time on the track. It’s going to be fun.”

Jason Kitzmiller is back in the No. 97 Codie Rohrbaugh entry and is set for his Pocono debut. The West Virgina native is coming his off his career best finish last weekend at Talladega, finishing eighth. With all that aside, Kitzmiller now turns his attention to Pocono and hopes to carry some of that Talladega momentum for Friday afternoon.

“I’ve been preparing as best as I can for Pocono,” added Kitzmiller. “Of course, I’m been talking to Codie a lot about it – but the only thing that is really going to help me is track time. I wish we were still having the test, but I know circumstances prevented that and we’ll have to work around that. Thankfully, we’ll have some practice before we jump in the race and I’ll use that as my saving grace to try and get comfortable and use the race to keep making adjustments to our car and put us in position to perhaps back up what we did last weekend at Talladega.”

Like Kitzmiller, Derek Griffith makes his first Pocono start as well. However the Chad Bryant Racing team has had some previous success at the 2.5 mile speedway. The No. 22 team won with Ty Majeski two years ago in 2018 after starting fifth and leading 12 laps. Griffith is excited to get to the track and see how the 22 team performs.

“I’m excited to get to Pocono on Friday,” said Griffith. “It’s going to be a big challenge as it will be the largest track that I’ve ever competed on, but I feel like I’m heading there with one of the best teams in the garage. It’s going to take a few laps to get comfortable, but I think with some confidence in myself and the leadership of the Chad (Bryant) and Paul (Andrews, crew chief) we can turn some heads.”

Joining the likes of Kitzmiller and Griffith will be the Fast Track Racing and Andy Hillenburg entry of Ryan Huff. Huff placed 12th last week at Talladega and heads to Pocono for the first time in his career. However, the team is optimistic as they were able to purchase some equipment from Travis Braden who previously owned RFMS Racing. This leaves Huff and the No. 10 team optimistic for Friday.

“We were fortunate to get our hands on some pretty good equipment,” sounded Huff. “Working with Fast Track Racing and Andy Hillenburg has been great for these last couple of races but we had the chance to bring some additional resources to the table and I’m hopeful we can capitalize on it.”

Of the other drivers slated for their first Pocono start include Ty Gibbs, Russ Lane, Sam Mayer, and Clay Greenfield.

Friday’s event will be a one-day show that includes only one practice session. The session takes place from 3:30-4:30 p.m./ET with no TV coverage. There will also be no qualifying and starting lineup will be based on 2019 owner points.

The green flag and 80 lap race is set for 6:05 p.m./ET live on Fox Sports 1.

  • Ryan Huff rides momentum to Pocono Raceway debut

Ryan Huff rides momentum to Pocono Raceway debut

POCONO, Pa.: With momentum on his side after earning his career-best ARCA Menards Series finish last weekend at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, rookie Ryan Huff heads to Pocono (Pa.) Raceway eyeing his first career top-10 finish in Friday’s General Tire #ANYWHEREISPOSSIBLE 200.

Hoping to bounce back from bad luck in the opening two races of the season at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway, Huff utilized the 76-lap General Tire 200 to gain knowledge not only about superspeedway racing but race etiquette too.

A 12th-place finish at the 2.66-mile superspeedway keeps the Williamsburg, Va. native optimistic he can tame the 2.5-mile triangle of Pocono – the same way he did at Talladega.

    The answer? Patience.

“Patience paid off at Talladega,” said Huff. “It wasn’t a very chaotic race as I thought it would have been, but it still offered situations where patience proved to be critical. I know Pocono is not Talladega, but I think some of the same fundamentals that I used last weekend – hopefully can be applied this weekend.”

Huff doesn’t have any prior experience at the Tricky Triangle and with just an hour practice session in groups on Friday to have his formal introduction with one of the most demanding tracks on the ARCA circuit, Huff hopes to find a good balance in practice and make strides during the 80-lap race.

“It’s just going to be about finding a rhythm and comfort zone in practice,” added Huff. “I’ve been told that Pocono is going to be challenging but I’m up for the challenge. We’re bringing a new car to the track this weekend and I think that will be beneficial for us.”

Over the past month, Ryan Huff Motorsports acquired equipment from RMFS Racing which had been previously driven by Travis Braden. With Braden’s success driving the No. 27 Ford Fusions in ARCA competition, Huff will have the opportunity to drive one of his cars in his Pocono debut.

“We were fortunate to get our hands on some pretty good equipment,” sounded Huff. “Working with Fast Track Racing and Andy Hillenburg has been great for these last couple of races but we had the chance to bring some additional resources to the table and I’m hopeful we can capitalize on it.”

As for Friday, Huff is hopeful for a top-10 finish.

“If I’m patient and able to drive a smart and clean race, I think we can accomplish a top-10 finish,” he said. “I believe I’m going to have a car capable of putting me inside the top-10, it’s going to be my responsibility to stay there.”

HB Hankins will assume the role as the primary partner of Huff’s No. 10 Ford Fusion for the fourth race of the season.

In addition to HB Hankins, Land & Coates and Southeastern Services will serve as associate marketing partners for the event.

Following Pocono, Huff hopes to return to ARCA Menards Series action at Lucas Oil Raceway on July 3, 2020 for the Calypso Lemonade 200.

The General Tire #ANYWHEREISPOSSIBLE 200 (80 laps | 200 miles) is the fourth of 20 races on the 2020 ARCA Menards Series schedule. • Jason Kitzmiller, CR7 Motorsports aim for back-to-back top-10 finishes at Pocono

Jason Kitzmiller, CR7 Motorsports aim for back-to-back top-10 finishes at Pocono

LONG POND, Pa.: With his career-best eighth-place finish in the books from last Saturday’s General Tire 200 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, ARCA Menards Series rookie Jason Kitzmiller heads to Pocono (Pa.) Raceway looking for more success in Friday night’s General Tire #ANYWHEREISPOSSIBLE 200.

Despite starting deep in the field at Talladega, patience and perseverance paid off for Kitzmiller and his Codie Rohrbaugh-led team. And knowing Pocono Raceway is a completely different monster, the team is adequately preparing for 80 laps of mental toughness.

“Man, it felt so good to have such a great finish last weekend at Talladega,” said Kitzmiller. “I can’t thank Codie and the entire CR7 Motorsports team for the opportunity. It was a lot of fun, but we also had to work for it.

“We played a strategy and while it kept us out of trouble, it took us from the lead pack. I know Pocono is going to be much different though.”

A new challenge indeed awaits Kitzmiller. Pocono didn’t earn its named the “Tricky Triangle” for nothing, but he also knows it’s something that can be conquered, even if in your rookie debut.

“I’ve been preparing as best as I can for Pocono,” added Kitzmiller. “Of course, I’m been talking to Codie a lot about it – but the only thing that is really going to help me is track time. I wish we were still having the test, but I know circumstances prevented that and we’ll have to work around that.

“Thankfully, we’ll have some practice before we jump in the race and I’ll use that as my saving grace to try and get comfortable and use the race to keep making adjustments to our car and put us in position to perhaps back up what we did last weekend at Talladega.”

Rohrbaugh, a veteran at Pocono in ARCA competition will also compete in Saturday’s NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series believes Kitzmiller will find his groove.

“There’s a big difference between Talladega and Pocono, but honestly, I think Jason will be fine,” Rohrbaugh offered. “I think it will take him a few laps to get comfortable but during the race, he’ll be able to find his groove and race the race track.

“Depending on how the race goes, we’ll likely be playing strategy so it will be making sure we can execute the factors like getting on and off pit road to our advantage in hopes of Jason another good finish and something for us to build on for the Truck race on Saturday.”
Marketing partnership(s) opportunities are available for the No. 97 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet and No. 9 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet for the 2020 ARCA Menards Series and NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series seasons and beyond. • Drew Dollar Takes Emotional Talladega Victory

Drew Dollar Takes Emotional Talladega Victory

The ARCA Menards Series returned to Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday afternoon for the General Tire 200 after 3 months away from the track.

With COVID-19 still a major factor across the nation, series officials limited exposure across the garage area, therefore no qualifying was held for the event. Meaning, a random draw took place, which saw Venturini Motorsports driver, Ryan Repko take the pole position and Drew Dollar in the No. 15 start outside pole in second.

And with no qualifying in place, limited crew members at track, there was a halfway break (lap 39) that allowed teams to work on their cars and make the adjustments necessary to their liking, but no positions can be gained.

Dollar got the lead instantly from the get-go and had led every lap until that point. There were challenges from Riley Herbst, who tried to make a move to take the lead, but Dollar held the position not allowing Herbst to make the pass.

After the halfway break, Herbst was finally able to get the top spot from Dollar. As the laps winded down, all three Venturini cars (Michael Self and Ryan Repko) were in a small pack of five cars. Minding their time, the three drivers hoped to get that run on Herbst, and tried for a top three sweep. However, the teammates had trouble doing so. Dollar went to make a move on Herbst, but both made contact for the lead. The contact saw Dollar drop back to fifth in the running order and had to rethink his plan of attack.

As Dollar and the Venturini cars regrouped themselves, most of them got momentum back on their side and made another run at Herbst. Repko pushed Dollar to the lead, but Michael Self had trouble, when he made contact with Herbst in Turns 3 and 4 coming to the final lap. Self, did a 360 spin, but somehow avoided further contact and damage.

No yellow was thrown and Dollar pulled away from the field to score an emotional victory at Talladega, his first career win in ARCA.

“I definitely needed this one. I’m definitely out of breath right now,” Dollar said. “Venturini guys gave me the car out here today. Had the best team, had the best spotter in the stand in Joe White. He guided me through it. I lost a family member over the break so this is definitely emotional. This one’s for him. I know he’s watching from up above.”

Indeed it was an emotional win for Dollar and the No. 15 Venturini Motorsports crew.

As Dollar picked up the victory for the first time in his career, he doesn’t really know when the victory will set in for him.

“I don’t know, maybe on the way home,”Dollar said excitingly. “I’m going to have a lot of notifications on my phone when I get back to the hauler. Maybe, once I get through all those, it will (the win) will sink in.”

  • DOLLAR GETS BIG PAYDAY IN GENERAL TIRE 200 ARCA MENARDS SERIES RACE AT TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY

DOLLAR GETS BIG PAYDAY IN GENERAL TIRE 200 ARCA MENARDS SERIES RACE AT TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY

Talladega, Ala. – Drew Dollar, in his fifth career ARCA Menards Series start, was in the right place at the right time Saturday and took the checkered flag during the General Tire 200 at Talladega Superspeedway.

Dollar, a 19-year-old from Atlanta, GA, maneuvered his Venturini Motorsports Toyota from third place up to the lead when the front twosome of Riley Herbst and Michael Self got together going into turn three coming to the white flag. The result saw Herbst have to let off the gas while Self had a slow half spin, but incredibly straightened it out without incident. The door was left open for Dollar, who shot to the lead and never looked back.

“I was giving Self a good push and was content to push him to the checkered flag,” said Dollar. “I saw him town down a little and the 18 (Herbst) touched. No one is giving an inch because we all want to win late in the race. Luckily they didn’t come up into me and finish wrecking.”

Dollar was able to hold off the drafting duo of Ryan Repko and local Munford, AL favorite, Bret Holmes, who made a late run but fell short.

“I thought I was going to have to throw a pretty desperate block at the end. I didn’t want to wreck all of us. I was pushing the pedal through the floorboard. I love the trophy. It’s the coolest ever,” he said of the track’s “Hammer & Anvil” trophy, which was created in honor of The Vulcan statue in nearby Birmingham.

The margin of victory was .115 second and there was just one caution, which tied a Talladega Superspeedway ARCA record. The average speed was 176.665 mph, another ‘Dega record.

Herbst wound up fourth with Self fifth. Rounding out the top 10 were Thad Moffitt, Hailie Deegan, Jason Kitzmiller, Sean Corr and Ed Pompa.

  • Ryan Huff optimistic ahead of Talladega debut

Ryan Huff optimistic ahead of Talladega debut

TALLADEGA, Ala.: Preparing to rejoin the ARCA Menards Series scene following the coronavirus pandemic halt, rookie driver Ryan Huff (@driverRyanHuff) heads to Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway for Saturday afternoon’s General Tire 200 optimistic and eager for a solid finish.

Successfully making his debut in the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway in February, Huff was forced to retire from the event after experiencing transmission woes.

Thankfully, the Williamsburg, Va. native has 41 laps of competitive drafting under his belt from Daytona that will be instrumental for his third ARCA Menards Series start of 2020.

“Yeah, I’m excited to get to Talladega, it’s been a while since I’ve been in the car,” said Huff. “I feel comfortable heading to Talladega even though we won’t have much track time before the race, but I feel like if we stick to our game plan, we should come out of there with a good finish and something to build on for Pocono and down the road.”

Despite an early exit from a blown-tire in his most recent race at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway in March, Huff remains 10th in the ARCA championship standings and while he hopes to maintain a healthy presence in the series as the year marches forward, Huff hope to keep himself nestled inside the top-10.

“The championship standings weren’t something we were particularly looking at but coming out of Phoenix and seeing we were 10th all things considered, I think you can say it gave us a little motivation. We’re not in a position to contender for the championship by any means, but little victories like gaining experience, finishing races and trying to stay inside that top-10 are all worth fighting for.

“I think we’re going to bring a pretty good piece for Talladega this week and we’ve made sure to correct the problem we had with the transmission, so that’s one less obstacle we hope we don’t have to face.”

With just a half-hour practice to dial in his No. 10 Land & Coates Outdoor Power Equipment Toyota Camry, Huff is relying on the veteran leadership of his Fast Track Racing team to make sure they execute in the garage and on pit road.

“We’re going to need every minute of that half hour,” added Huff. “We need to make sure we’re ready to race and hopefully any kinks that we need to work out, we’ll find during that time. I’m sure we’ll draft a little too just to make sure I’m comfortable and the car’s handling is to my liking. From there, it’s just head down fin up.”

Backing Huff’s entry on Friday night is Land & Coates, The Virginia-based company that provides the best and latest in outdoor power products.

We are family-owned and operated and conveniently located with eight locations in Virginia. • ARCA Menards Series Preview – Talladega

ARCA Menards Series Preview – Talladega

The ARCA Menards East Series action returned to the track last Saturday at Toledo and the ARCA Menards Series is set to return this Saturday at the 2.66 mile Talladega Superspeedway, after three and a half months off from the track.

Just 21 cars are expected to take the green flag at 1 p.m./Central time and some drivers have not been able to race since March at Phoenix Raceway.

For Venturini Motorsports, the team is bringing three of its normal drivers down, hoping to take another win for 2020. One of them, Michael Self, has surprisingly not scored a victory yet at Talladega despite being close multiple times. Self has just two starts at the superspeedway and earned a best finish of third in 2018 when he led 21 laps in the event.

“I can’t believe it’s finally race week again,” Self said. “I feel like it’s been forever since we’ve been on track and I know I speak for everyone on the No. 25 Sinclair Oil, Champion Power Equipment Toyota team when I say we can’t wait to get going again. With that being said, we’ve got to go in and be smart and try to execute just like we did at Daytona (International Speedway). I’ve been fortunate to have some solid top-five runs at Talladega, be we have to be patient and not force anything and play whatever card we’re dealt to try and keep things clean and do it again.”

As for his teammates, Ryan Repko and Drew Dollar, who are both rookies will be making their first Talladega start. However, Dollar and Repko have made starts at Daytona earlier this year, where Dollar finished third and Repko was regulated to a 22nd place finish after a crash took him out at the halfway point.

“I’m excited to finally get back in the ARCA car and get back to work with my Venturini Motorsports team,” Dollar said. “Talladega (Superspeedway) is a race that I’ve been looking forward to since I ran at Daytona (International Speedway) earlier this season. Shannon (Rursch) and the team brought an amazing car to Daytona, so I know our Toyota Camry will be fast this weekend. I’m confident about getting back on trac and competing for the win.”

“Talladega Superspeedway is one of the tracks that I’ve been looking forward to because of its rich history within our sport,” Repko said. “I am hoping I can add to that history this weekend with my Venturini Motorsports team and our No. 20 Toyota Camry.”

As for DGR-Crosley, the same can be said for most of its drivers who will make their first Talladega start this weekend. Hailie Deegan almost pulled off the upset at Daytona in February where she finished second. Deegan notes she enjoyed for her first Daytona start and looks forward to making another superspeedway start.

“After Daytona, I didn’t realize how much fun superspeedway racing was going to be,” Deegan said. “I really loved it. Everyone always talks about how not fun and boring it is, but I had so much fun. It think having a good car made it a lot more fun too. Racing is always better when you have a good car! The guys at DGR-Crosley gave me a really good Ford Fusion to work with, so that always makes it a lot easier, a lot more fun and creates a lot of positive energy. They’ve been giving me really good stuff and I think that we can just go out there and hopefully expect to have another good run. I’ve been waiting to race for way too long, so hopefully we can get back to racing, have some good finishes and get the season back on track.”

Tanner Gray will be back in the ARCA car this weekend, sporting the No. 17 Ford Performance machine. The New Mexico native has some experience racing at superspeedways. After all, he made one ARCA and Truck Series start at Daytona. Unfortunately, an oil leak regulated and took Gray out of contention to a 16th place position, just 10 laps shy of the finish. On the Truck side, he did not find much luck there either, as a crash took Gray out and placed him 23rd. Even though, those finishes may not show what Gray is capable of, he is excited to get back in the ARCA car.

“I’m excited to be back in the ARCA car and working with Blake (Bainbridge, crew chief) and the 17 team again this weekend,” Gray said. “We have a weekend off on the truck side, so it’s always nice to be able to stay in the car and get some experience at tracks that we will be visiting later in the season. I learned a lot at Daytona in February, so I’m looking forward to another superspeedway race. I’ve never been to Talladega, but I’ve been watching film with my spotter (Kevin Hamlin) and listening to his advice. Thad (Moffitt) ran there in the ARCA race last year, so he will be a good resource too. Hopefully the three of us (teammates Moffitt and Hailie Deegan) can work together throughout the race and all end up fighting for the lead at the end.”

Thad Moffitt has just one start at the superspeedway, which came in last years race. The North Carolina native finished 25th after an oil leak ended his day early. However, at Daytona, Moffitt was able to place the No. 46 Ford fifth in the running order.

“I’m really excited to get back to racing,” Moffitt said. “I felt like we had a lot of positive momentum after the first two races and then everything kind of stalled out with the Coronavirus. I think that we can still carry that momentum and confidence into Talladega. I like the fact that we are taking three cars again and I think we (DGR-Crosley teammates Hailie Deegan & Tanner Gray) will work very well together. I think we have shot for sure to win this race, and if not, run in the top five, or top 10.”

Someone who does have experience more than some of the field is Gus Dean, who has four starts including one win that came back in his first outing in 2016. Since then, his best finish has been six (twice, 2017 and 2019). Dean’s team has managed to lead 25 laps in four of those starts, which has earned him a average finish of 6.2.

“I feel very blessed to have another opportunity to come back to Talladega and race and try and get another ARCA win,” said Dean. “I’ll never forget April 2016, but its time to make new memories with new people in 2020 and I hope we can do that on Saturday. I always run well at the superspeedway tracks, but Talladega has certainly been kinder to me over the years. I’ve been super blessed to drive fast race cars and have great spotters and teams who have put me in the same position year after year.”

Jason Kitzmiller and the No. 97 Codie Rohrbaugh own team are set for another superspeedway start in 2020. Kitzmiller recently competed at Daytona, but engine troubles on lap 11, forced the team to retire from the event and was credited with a 32nd place finish. This time, the West Virginia native is ready for Talladega, but notes it will be a fast schedule with just a one day show and not much track time to get suited.

“Pretty thankful to Codie, Doug and the entire CR7 Motorsports team for working hard to put this car together for this weekend,” said Kitzmiller. “It’s no secret that Daytona didn’t go as we hoped it would, but Talladega is another race full of opportunity and I hope we can execute on that. There was a lot of time to prepare for everything in Daytona with the open test and all, but Talladega is going to be really quick with a short practice and then the race.”

Normally, Chad Bryant Racing, is the team to beat at superspeedways fielding a two car team. For Saturday’s event, Paul Andrews is fielding just one car, which will be the No. 22 driven by Brandon Lynn. Lynn brings superspeedway experience to the team, as five of his 11 starts came at Talladega. Most recently, Lynn competed for Venturini Motorsports the last two times and earned a best finish of third in 2019 after qualifying on the pole. With that said, Lynn hopes to bring those competitive finishes to Chad Bryant Racing on Saturday afternoon.

“I’ve been ready to get to Talladega,” said Lynn. “I’ve been staying busy with work but have been checking in with the team and doing what I can to prepared myself for the race on Saturday. Honestly, I just feel lucky to be able to race this weekend at Talladega considering all that has transpired in 2020. I feel like I have some unfinished business at Talladega, and I would like to finish what I started last year in a couple weeks. I know the circumstances will be different with limited on-track activity – but I think the years of experience between myself and the team will pay off.”

As for other notable drivers, they include Riley Herbst in the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, Bret Holmes in the No. 23 Chevrolet, Con Nicolopoulos in the Wayne Peterson Racing entry, Tim Richmond in the No. 06, Eric Caudell in the No. 7, Sean Corr in the No. 8, Tommy Vigh Jr in the No. 01, Willie Mullins in the No. 11, Ed Pompa in the No. 12, Brad Smith in the No. 48, and Scott Melton in the No. 69. All have made at least one start at Talladega.

Ryan Huff, in the No. 10 Andy Hillenburg Toyota, is another driver who will also be making his first start Saturday.

In the past five races, there have been five different winners. Those include Blake Jones in 2015, Gus Dean in 2016, Justin Haley in 2017, Zane Smith in 2018, and previous race winner Todd Gilliland in 2019.

Toyota has won the last three races dating back to 2017. Overall, they have earned six wins, with their first victory coming in 2007 with Michael Annett. Other manufacturers, who have won include Buick, Pontiac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Ford, and Dodge.

This race weekend was originally scheduled for April, but COVID-19 pandemic altered those plans, which saw the race shifted to June. And with that, the schedule is condensed to limit overexposure.

Originally, there was going to be no practice sessions. However, series officials, have decided to grant teams one practice session that is slated for 30 minutes, lasting from 10-10:30 central time. There will be no group qualifying as qualifying is based on random draw. Drivers will report to their cars at 12:50 p.m./Central with the green flag scheduled for 1 p.m..

As there will be no qualifying and limited track time, the General Tire 200 will be split into two segment, allowing teams to have time to make adjustments on their cars. The halfway break which will signify the segment, is expected to occur on lap 38.

The General Tire 200 can be seen on Fox Sports 1.

  • Brandon Lynn ready to execute in Chad Bryant Racing debut at Talladega

Brandon Lynn ready to execute in Chad Bryant Racing debut at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala.: With his first ARCA Menards Series appearance on deck this weekend for Saturday afternoon’s General Tire 200 with Chad Bryant Racing, series’ veteran Brandon Lynn hopes to not only showcase his ability but put the team back in Victory Lane.

Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway will be the first of a minimum two-race deal for Lynn who will pilot the team’s flagship No. 22 Ford Fusion entry.

“I’ve been ready to get to Talladega,” said Lynn. “I’ve been staying busy with work but have been checking in with the team and doing what I can to prepared myself for the race on Saturday.

“Honestly, I just feel lucky to be able to race this weekend at Talladega considering all that has transpired in 2020.”

Carolina Excavation will support the effort for his 12th career ARCA Menards Series race.

Carolina Excavation is a residential subdivision total site development company for the developers around the Charlotte region. They specialize in site cleaning work, mass grading, fine grading, utility work, asphalt, and curb.

Carolina Excavation is equipped with the latest and greatest in GPS technology to build the ideal site for developers wanting the perfect product.

Originally slated as a mid-April event, the coronavirus pandemic has forced ARCA Menards Series officials to adjust the 2020 schedule with Saturday’s 76-lap race becoming the opening act for a doubleheader for the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

As for Lynn, he is no stranger to Talladega’s 2.66-mile high banks.

Lynn will make his fifth consecutive ARCA start at the famed Alabama race track. In his previous four efforts, he has earned one top-five and two top-10 finishes including a career-best third place finish last April after winning the pole.

“I feel like I have some unfinished business at Talladega, and I would like to finish what I started last year in a couple weeks. I know the circumstances will be different with limited on-track activity – but I think the years of experience between myself and the team will pay off.”

With the race distance being altered from a traditional 94 laps to now just 76, Lynn believes strategy will be key to success this weekend and with the knowledge of veteran crew chief Paul Andrews, he believes he has one of ARCA’s finest on the box.

“Chad Bryant Racing is a huge player when it comes to the ARCA Menards Series,” Lynn stated.

“Whether it is raw speed or using strategy to outwit their competitors, I know whatever situation we find ourselves in on Saturday, we should have a good chance of contending for the win. Strategy will be a factor this weekend, it’s just going to be fascinating to see how it all unravels.”

Team owner Chad Bryant says he is looking forward to having the opportunity to work with Lynn.

“Brandon is an exceptional superspeedway racer and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in our equipment,” Bryant said. “His experience should put us in good position to contend for our first win of the season.

“We had a lot of speed at Daytona even though we don’t have the finishes to show for it. Last year at Talladega, our No. 22 Chad Bryant Racing Ford ran inside the top-five the entire race with Ty Majeski and I know with a little luck we can backup or better our fourth-place effort with Brandon this weekend.”

In addition to Talladega, Lynn will return with Chad Bryant Racing later this summer for the scheduled Aug. 14 race at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

  • Jason Kitzmiller embraces second opportunity with CR7 Motorsports at Talladega

Jason Kitzmiller embraces second opportunity with CR7 Motorsports at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala.: While his ARCA Menards Series (AMS) debut did not turn out like he hoped at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, rookie Jason Kitzmiller will get a second chance with the veteran CR7 Motorsports team in Saturday afternoon’s General Tire 200 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

With the guidance of crew chief Doug George and the leadership of former ARCA Menards Series driver Codie Rohrbaugh, Kitzmiller is hoping his second career ARCA start will yield a strong recovery in the third ARCA Menards Series race of the season.

“Pretty thankful to Codie, Doug and the entire CR7 Motorsports team for working hard to put this car together for this weekend,” said Kitzmiller. “It’s no secret that Daytona didn’t go as we hoped it would, but Talladega is another race full of opportunity and I
hope we can execute on that.”

Talladega’s schedule will however look much different than Daytona. With just a brief half-hour session to fine-tune his No. 97 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet and a random draw to decide his starting position, Kitzmiller is focused on taking the advice of those around him to successful guide him to a potential top-10 finish.

“There was a lot of time to prepare for everything in Daytona with the open test and all, but Talladega is going to be really quick with a short practice and then the race,” Kitzmiller explained.

CR7 Motorsports has already had success on the superspeedways this season. In the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race at Daytona, Rohrbaugh earned a career-best third place finish after spinning earlier in the race.

“Jason will be fine,” offered Rohrbaugh. “Superspeedway isn’t as easy as just holding the steering wheel and turning left. There is a lot that goes into making the race successful. A good driver, a good spotter, a prime pit crew and a fast race car. We showed speed in preseason testing at Daytona, but unfortunately never were able to showcase that.

“We’ll try on Saturday and then regroup and see what the next step is.”
