Gus Dean hoping to make another Talladega ARCA memory

TALLADEGA, Ala.: Set to make his second ARCA Menards Series start of the 2020 season this weekend at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Gus Dean is hoping history can repeat itself in Saturday afternoon’s General Tire 200.

In 2016, Dean in just his second ARCA Menards Series race went to Victory Lane at Talladega in a nail-biting finish that was determined by inches. Since then, he has continued to enjoy strong finishes at the 2.66-mile superspeedway, but the Bluffton, S.C. native is ready to celebrate again.

“I feel very blessed to have another opportunity to come back to Talladega and race and try and get another ARCA win,” said Dean. “I’ll never forget April 2016, but its time to make new memories with new people in 2020 and I hope we can do that on Saturday.”

Dean will return to Win-Tron Racing for his 53rd career ARCA start under the leadership of veteran crew chief Jamie Jones who has worked with the two-time ARCA winner for the last 25 races.

The two have enjoyed modest success with pole, a win at Elko (Minn.) Speedway and numerous top-five and top-10 finishes to boost – but a superspeedway win would be the icing on the cake for this pair who has shown since 2018 with fast race cars on the superspeedways of Daytona and Talladega for the Kevin Cywinski-owned team.

“I love working with Jamie (Jones),” added Dean. “Jamie and I have great communication and a great friendship. He wants to win just as bad as I do – if not more. He spends a lot of time preparing our superspeedway car and he feels really good about this weekend’s piece. As do I.

“I’m just ready for Saturday to be here and get the ball rolling.”

Dean has four prior starts at Talladega with a win, one top-five and three top-10 finishes. He has not finished worse than 12th and has completed all 319 laps from 2016 to 2019.

And while the other superspeedway track of Daytona has not been as kind to him, he hopes for more of the same luck at Talladega for the fifth consecutive year.

“I always run well at the superspeedway tracks, but Talladega has certainly been kinder to me over the years. I’ve been super blessed to drive fast race cars and have great spotters and teams who have put me in the same position year after year.”

Like Daytona, MASHONIT Apparel Co. will support Dean’s effort for the 76-lap race.

MASHONIT Apparel Co. is a brand for those that live life wide open. The people that look at something normal and think, “That’s not good enough,” “It can go faster” or “Let’s see what this thing can do.”

Those that have the hunger inside that keeps them just south of normal.

That never-ending hunger for speed and adrenaline that allows you to find the thin line between being heroic and insane, giving them a perspective on life that few are lucky enough to find. – That’s MASHONIT.

With a limited practice session on Saturday afternoon to get their No. 32 MASHONIT Apparel Co. Chevrolet dialed in, Dean feels no matter where he starts by virtue of the random draw, his superspeedway experience will pay dividends.

“A short practice session followed by a shorter than normal race is going to put a lot of pressure on the teams to make sure you unload off the hauler the best of the best. You just have to hope the car is pretty close to perfect by the end of practice and then hope for the best.

“I think we’ll have an opportunity for adjustments if we need them at some point early in the race, but Jamie knows what I need from a drivers’ standpoint so I put my faith in him and the rest of the Win-Tron Racing guys and I’ll do my best from behind the wheel.”

Veteran spotter and close friend Tyler Monn will spot for Dean. Monn guided Dean to his second career ARCA victory at Elko in July 2018.

Dean will carry the MASHONIT Apparel Co. onboard camera for the General Tire 200 offering viewers a unique view from inside the cockpit.

The General Tire 200 (76 laps | 202 miles) is the third of 20 races on the 2020 ARCA Menards Series schedule. Practice begins Sat., June 20 with a half-hour session from 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. The race is set to take the green flag shortly after 1:00 p.m. The event will be televised live on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), while ARCARacing.com will stream live timing and scoring throughout the entire weekend festivities. All times are local (Central).

Hailie Deegan, No. 4 Toter Ford Fusion

After over a three-month hiatus in racing, Hailie Deegan is ready to get back on track in her No. 4 Toter Ford Fusion. She sits second in the ARCA Menards Series point standings after finishing second in the season-opening race at Daytona, and seventh in the series’ last race at Phoenix in March.

Since then Deegan’s only racing has been on a simulator and she has spent her time working out and playing with her new Rottweiler puppy, Trigger. She returned to North Carolina to the DGR-Crosley shop this week for the first time since mid-March before she quarantined with her family at home in California.

This will be Deegan’s first race at Talladega, but if her superspeedway debut at Daytona is any indication, there is a good chance she could score her first ARCA win this weekend. She ran with the lead draft much of the race, and finished second. She was also able to spend some time on the Ford Performance simulator earlier this week to prepare for the biggest track of her career.

Deegan on Talladega: “After Daytona, I didn’t realize how much fun superspeedway racing was going to be. I really loved it. Everyone always talks about how not fun and boring it is, but I had so much fun. It think having a good car made it a lot more fun too. Racing is always better when you have a good car! The guys at DGR-Crosley gave me a really good Ford Fusion to work with, so that always makes it a lot easier, a lot more fun and creates a lot of positive energy. They’ve been giving me really good stuff and I think that we can just go out there and hopefully expect to have another good run. I’ve been waiting to race for way too long, so hopefully we can get back to racing, have some good finishes and get the season back on track.”

Tanner Gray, No. 17 Ford Performance Fusion

Tanner Gray returns to the ARCA Menards Series (AMS) at Talladega Superspeedway while there is a break in the action in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series (NGROTS) where he competes full time. This will be the third of Gray’s four scheduled starts in the ARCA Series. He plans to race at Pocono Raceway next weekend as well.

The New Mexico native ran eight ARCA races last season with one top-five, five top-10 finishes and one pole. He also ran a combined 15 races between the ARCA Menards Series East and West in 2019 with one win (South Boston, Va.) nine top-five, 12 top-10 finishes and three poles. Gray finished 16th in the ARCA Menards Series season opener at Daytona last month after an oil leak took him out of contention, but rallied with a fourth-place finish at Phoenix in March.

This will be Gray’s first start at Talladega in any series, and only his third overall start on a superspeedway. He competed in the ARCA and NGROTS events at Daytona in February. An oil leak took him out of contention in the ARCA race after running up front most of the race, and an accident ended his night early in the Truck Series race. He’s looking to change that luck Saturday at Talladega.

Gray on Talladega: “I’m excited to be back in the ARCA car and working with Blake (Bainbridge, crew chief) and the 17 team again this weekend. We have a weekend off on the truck side, so it’s always nice to be able to stay in the car and get some experience at tracks that we will be visiting later in the season. I learned a lot at Daytona in February, so I’m looking forward to another superspeedway race. I’ve never been to Talladega, but I’ve been watching film with my spotter (Kevin Hamlin) and listening to his advice. Thad (Moffitt) ran there in the ARCA race last year, so he will be a good resource too. Hopefully the three of us (teammates Moffitt and Hailie Deegan) can work together throughout the race and all end up fighting for the lead at the end.”

Thad Moffitt, No. 46 Richard Petty Performance Plus Motor Oil Ford Fusion

Thad Moffitt cannot wait to get back in his race car after earning his best career ARCA Menards Series finish (fifth) at Daytona International Speedway in February. Then he drove his No. 46 Richard Petty Performance Plus Motor Oil Ford Fusion into the top 10 at Phoenix, until a cut left-front tire ended his night with only 25 laps to go. It has been a long three months waiting to get back to what he loves – racing.

This will be Moffitt’s second ARCA start at Talladega. Last year he finished 25th after a broken oil line ended his race prematurely, but this year Moffitt has renewed momentum after a top-five finish at Daytona in February. The DGR-Crosley team is taking the same Ford Fusion he raced at Daytona.

During the over three-month break, Moffitt has spent his time doing some iRacing and working at his grandfather’s (Richard Petty) famous Petty’s Garage in Level Cross, N.C. He also completed his sophomore year virtually, as most students did, at the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC).

Moffitt on Talladega: “I’m really excited to get back to racing. I felt like we had a lot of positive momentum after the first two races and then everything kind of stalled out with the Coronavirus. I think that we can still carry that momentum and confidence into Talladega. I like the fact that we are taking three cars again and I think we (DGR-Crosley teammates Hailie Deegan & Tanner Gray) will work very well together. I think we have shot for sure to win this race, and if not, run in the top five, or top 10.”

Chad Bryant Racing adjusts ARCA Menards Series East plans

MOORESVILLE, N.C.: Chad Bryant Racing (CBR) announced today that the coronavirus pandemic has forced the organization to adjust its 2020 ARCA Menards Series East schedule which includes their withdraw from competition in Saturday’s Herr’s Potato Chips 200 at Toledo Speedway.

Before the COVID-19 outbreak, CBR and newcomer Derek Griffith was slated to run the full ARCA Menards Series East schedule, but with current protocols and procedures in place, the team will now run select races in the ARCA Menards Series and ARCA Menards Series East.

Griffith, 23 and Chad Bryant Racing embraced an outstanding performance in their series’ debut together in February at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway.

The talented Late Model ace from the Northeast had one of the fastest cars in practice; won the pole, led a whopping 144 of the race’s 175 laps, but a late-race pit stop penalty relegated Griffith to start at the rear of the field. With 31 laps remaining he was able to come from last to second.

Knowing the team will now forgo a championship, the team under the leadership of Paul Andrews will now focus on race wins.

“This was a difficult decision for our Chad Bryant Racing team,” said team owner Chad Bryant. “We weighed the options and without the opportunity to race and interact with fans right now, we had to adjust our plans in the best interest of Original Gourmet™ Food Company and their initiatives.

“While we’re disappointed that we’ll no longer be able to compete for an ARCA Menards Series East championship, we’re upbeat knowing that we can go to the race track each week with a young, flourishing and talented driver.”

In lieu of Toledo, CBR and Griffith will now compete in the ARCA Menards Series race at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway on June 26 with the No. 22 Original Gourmet™ Food Company Ford Fusion.

An updated 2020 schedule for Griffith will be released in the near future.

  • Interview: Catching Up With Howie DiSavino III

Interview: Catching Up With Howie DiSavino III

In this interview, Speedway Media catches up with ARCA driver, Howie DiSavino III.

DiSavino III is currently 19-years old and from Chesterfield, Virginia, and has made select starts in the ARCA Menards Series. During the interview, DiSavino III talks about the first race he competed in, the driver he’s always idolized, and if he is superstitious about his race day routine.

SM: What was the very first race you had partaken as a race car driver? Was it everything you expected?

HD: “The first race that I partaken in was a late model race,” DiSavino III said. “We rented a late model from a local team. I was 14-years old and didn’t know how to drive a stick shift. I learned really quick that was needed. We started 21st and came in 13th place.

SM: How calm are you during a race? Are you a driver that’s more fired up behind the wheel or take it easy until the halfway point

HD: “I am more of the driver to be calm and collective until the halfway point.”

SM: What’s the most exhilarating race you’ve ever been a part of? Any come to mind?

HD: “The most exhilarating race I have been in was at Elko in my first ARCA start,” he said. “We came 10th and on the lead lap. That was my most cherished race.”

SM: Which driver did you idolize and wanted to be like growing up as a racer?

HD: “I have always idolized Dale Jr.”

SM: You are walking around in the garage area. A fan is trying to reach you for an autograph, but for whatever reason, you can’t see them or maybe the garage area is packed. How does a fan grab your attention for an autograph or photo?

HD: A simple wave as I look over the crowd is how a fan gets my attention,” DiSavino III said. “I love talking to fans and hearing what their thoughts are.”

SM: Has there ever been a random or funny moment that has happened to you during a race?

HD: “The funniest moment I have had was when, I put my water hose next to my leg during a race,” he said. It got pinned against the seat and when I went into the corner, it sprayed all over my leg and I was wondering to myself if I peed on myself… Water was all over me.”

SM: Who is one racing icon that you have always wanted to meet?

HD: I would love to meet Dale Jr,” DiSavino III said. “He seems like a great down to earth guy!”

SM: Are you someone that is superstitious before a race starts?

HD: “I am not superstitious,” he said. “However, my crew member Mike Garcia gave me a cross and I have it with me every time I race.”

SM: What is the first thing you do after you come home from a race? Does it take a while for the adrenaline to wear off?

HD: “After a race, I usually eat a lot and talk about the race with everyone.”

SM: If you could visit any planet in the solar system. Which planet would you choose?

HD: “I would want to go to Saturn, because it looks like it has a racetrack around it!”

SM: You are required to go without one social media app for a year. What app would you choose to go without?

HD: “I would go without Snapchat.”

SM: Time travel is available and you can go back in time to pick a race to watch in person. What race do you pick if you had the chance to watch it in person?

HD: I would want to go to the Daytona race Dale Jr. won in the 2001 Pepsi 400.”

Fans of Howie can follow him on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Additionally, fans can check out his website.

DiSavino III has made three ARCA Menards Series starts since 2019. His current best career finish is in his ARCA debut, which took place at Elko Speedway last summer.

  • Interview: Locked Down With Thad Moffitt

Interview: Locked Down With Thad Moffitt

In continuation of our series “Locked Down,” Speedway Media catches with DGR-Crosley ARCA driver, Thad Moffitt, to find out what he has been up to during the break from racing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

SM: It has been a while since we’ve had racing on-track. How have you been holding up during this time off?

TM: ” It has been tough, but I’ve been doing a lot of iRacing and working out keeping myself prepared for when we go back racing,” Moffitt said. “Also I’ve enjoyed a lot of quality family time that I usually don’t get being on the road so much.”

SM: Virtual racing has taken off by storm. Have you been one of the few that have been participating in virtual races? If so, what kind of races have you been partaking in?

TM: “I have been running the Saturday Night Thunder races,” he said. “I’ve also run a few of the short track series by NBCSN. I’ve also been running a lot of the fixed races.”

SM: Drivers are always looking to learn more about specific tracks. With this time off, do you feel as though iRaces are preparing you to keep your mental focus when you revisit the tracks you race later this year?

TM: “I believe that it is a great tool to help with throttle control and your hand-eye coordination but I don’t think you can simulate the actual feeling of going 200 mph,” Moffitt said. “But, iRacing is definitely the closest I’ve been to real racing without driving a car.”

SM: You have a unique story/background, as you are Richard Petty’s grandson. How much has he meant to you in your early career? I’m sure he has given you some great advice.

TM: “I have definitely been surrounded by many great people early in my career with my Grandpa and my uncle Kyle being two of my biggest mentors,” he said. “My grandfather is always the first person to give me constructive criticism because he knows I can run better at times, but also tells me when I do something right. He’s given me many pointers from day one. Things as small as to how to hold the steering wheel based on handling conditions of the car.”

SM: Only two races have been completed this year but do you feel as though this year has started off better than last year? If so, how is this year better than last year?

TM:  “I feel more confident going into this year,” Moffitt said. “We showed great speed in both of the races thus far with the exception of blowing a tire at Phoenix. I made multiple mistakes at Phoenix but I know I had a top-five car for sure. I believe you will see me and my DGR Crosley team in victory lane multiple times before it’s all said and done this year. They are a great group of guys and we all work very well together and show up to win every time we hit the track.”

SM: Speaking of wins, whenever you get that first what will the celebration be like?

TM: “Ha-ha. I guess we will have to wait and see later this year but I’m sure it will be special.”

SM: Is there anything you have in mind in 2020 that you would like to improve on from last year?

TM: “One of the biggest things I need to improve on is being more aggressive,” he said. “I’ve lacked aggression in certain situations and I realize that and know it’s something I need to work on.”

SM: Once we get back racing, whenever that is, what tracks do you have your eye on that you think you can perform well at or maybe win at?

TM: “With the schedule kind of up in the air, I have no idea where that race will be but I feel like Charlotte will be a really good race for us because I ran well there last year and so did the DGR-Crosley team,” Moffitt said. “I believe in their car we will have a shot to win. I’m also eyeing some of the short tracks that I’m returning to for a second time like Salem and Lucas Oil Raceway.”

SM:  During this time off, have you been able to catch up on anything or find a new hobby that you might otherwise not have the time for?

TM:  “I’ve more so been watching my old races and old Cup races just waiting to get the call to get back into the car,” Moffitt said. “My whole family lives and breathes NASCAR so it’s always been our main focus at any point in time.”

SM: This time can also be discouraging to everyone. What have you done to keep positive and look at the big picture moving forward?

TM:  “Luckily I’ve been surrounded by very positive people and we’ve all kept a great outlook on the situation,” he said. “But, most of all, I’ve been looking to the man upstairs because I believe everything happens for a reason and he has a greater plan for each of us that we just don’t know yet.”

SM: What’s one thing you miss about being at the track?

TM: “The biggest thing I miss is the feeling when you strap in and the green is about to drop and nothing else in the world matters,” Moffitt said. But another thing I miss is getting to meet all the new people every weekend and interact with the fans and letting them get to know me a little better.”

SM: Wrapping it up, what’s one goal or objective that you hope to achieve before the 2020 season is over?

TM: “One of the biggest goals coming into the season was to win and then win again and again, so I stand by that goal and hope to win multiple races in the 2020 season.”

Fans of Thad can follow him on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

So far in Moffitt’s young racing career, the North Carolina native has made 17 starts during a span of over four years dating back to his first ARCA start at the age of 16 at Nashville. Out of those 17 starts, the 19-year-old has one top-five and six top-10 finishes with a best finish of fifth occurring in the season opener at Daytona.

Derek Griffith looking to put a ‘licking’ on the ARCA Menards Series East competition

“Sponsorship Propels Griffith and Chad Bryant Racing to compete fulltime in 2020”

MOORESVILLE, N.C.: Chad Bryant Racing (CBR) announced today that a new partnership agreement with Original Gourmet™ Food Company will propel the team into a fulltime ARCA Menards Series East schedule with driver Derek Griffith beginning with this weekend’s Pensacola 200 presented by Inspectra Thermal Solutions at Five Flags (Fla.) Speedway.

Headquartered in Salem, New Hampshire, Original Gourmet™ has been innovating in the sweets and snack industry since 1994. Their story started with a recipe and a vision.

Their curiosity for making special blends of flavors and colors of candy became a passion for providing people with bold tasting lollipops.

Griffith’s No. 2 Ford Fusion will be covered in a variety of the company’s 26 lollipops flavors.

Original Gourmet’s lollipops are the largest pops sold with a bright taste and bright colors – standing out from all the rest. Weighing in at 1.1 oz., these lollipops are gluten and peanut free delights that have a plastic stick and will not get soggy as all the other lollipops do.

Original Gourmet™ prides themselves on the wide variety of flavors they offer because they are a great treat for everyone in the family.

“I am so blessed for this opportunity to represent Original Gourmet™ Food Company and compete for the ARCA Menards Series East championship,“ said Griffith. “This is a great chance to bring a new partner into the sport and bring a product that race fans can enjoy while watching our Chad Bryant Racing compete for the championship title.

“I’m eager to get to Five Flags this weekend and finish what we started at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway.

Griffith, 23, returns to Chad Bryant Racing on the heels of an outstanding performance in their series’ debut together last month at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway.

This weekend, Griffith, a two-time finalist in the Kulwicki Driver Development program will look for his first career ARCA Menards Series East victory under the leadership of former NASCAR Cup Series crew chief Paul Andrews.

“It’s going to be a fun season,” added Griffith. “With the support of the Original Gourmet™ Food Company, we’ll not only have the opportunity to win races, but we will also contend for the series’ championship – something I didn’t think we’d be able to do. Hopefully, with the strength of our team, we can put a ‘licking’ on the rest of the competition.”

Team owner Chad Bryant says he’s ecstatic to have Griffith apart of his team’s driver development program, and their performance at New Smyrna was just the start of things to come from the No. 2 Chad Bryant Racing team this season.

“Derek impressed a lot of people at New Smyrna and he’ll only continue to turn heads as the ARCA Menards Series East season marches on,” offered Bryant. “He is extremely talented and our performance last month is just a taste of what is to come from our No. 2 Chad Bryant Racing team.

“We’re happy to carry the Original Gourmet™ colors and look forward to celebrating with them a lot in 2020.”

  • Four Takeaways from the General Tire 150 at Phoenix Raceway

Four Takeaways from the General Tire 150 at Phoenix Raceway

The ARCA Menards Series visited Phoenix Raceway this past weekend for their series debut. A total of about 25 cars made the field with no one going home. Only one car withdrew from the entry list and that was the No. 48 of Brad Smith. As expected in the ARCA Series, the Venturini Motorsports teams are tough to beat, even when they faced some adversity throughout the General Tire 150. Despite Chandler Smith (No relation to Brad) not dominating the whole race as Ty Gibbs did, he found himself with an opportunity to win with a one-lap to go restart. With the Venturini teams taking the top two spots, there were some stories race fans might have missed in the second race of the 2020 ARCA Menards Series season.

    1. Chandler Smith Scores Surprise Win At Phoenix – As mentioned, Smith didn’t dominate the whole race and didn’t seem to even have the car to win. But, a late-race yellow saw the Venturini cars come down pit road and Smith got the two-tire call. After one final caution, the Talking Rock, Georgia native found himself P1 on the last lap restart. There were some final hard charges from Ty Gibbs and teammate Michael Self in the last turn, but Smith held them off to score his eighth career ARCA Menards Series win.

    2. Armani Williams Places 17th In Series Debut – Probably one of the most unique stories of the night was Detroit, Michigan native Armani Williams finishing 17th in the first race of his career. What makes it an interesting story is that Williams was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 5. Despite being diagnosed, that does not slow down the Michigan native as he is living his dream of being a racecar driver. Williams had a partnership from Centria Autism, a nationally known provider that does therapy and provides varied services, as well as injury services. Nonetheless, this was one of the stories overlooked. Williams has six NASCAR Pinty Series starts, two NASCAR K&N Pro Series West and East Series starts. His best finish in his young NASCAR career so far is ninth in the Pinty Series that came in 2018 at New Hampshire.

    3. Bret Holmes Black Flagged After Restart Confusion – Late in the race following a caution, there was some confusion regarding the restart order as to who was restarting where. As a result, several laps were wasted in trying to figure out the restart order. One driver, unfortunately, caught the backlash and that was the No. 23 of Bret Holmes. Holmes was penalized for a restart violation and relegated to a disappointing 15th place finish, four laps down. A forgettable night for sure for the family owned team.

    4. Sam Mayer Has Disappointing Season Opener – Anytime Sam Mayer is entered in the field whether it is the ARCA East or ARCA West Series, he is a fan favorite to win the race. Mayer was making his first start of the season at Phoenix Raceway and had hoped to make some noise as he had done in the first two races of the season falling under the East and West category. Mayer qualified fourth and was in contention for a top-five finish in the mid-stages of the race. However, a mechanical issue took out the GMS Racing driver late in the race on Lap 87. Mayer was credited with a 20th place finish.
  • Chandler Smith holds off teammate Michael Self for General Tire 150 victory at Phoenix

Chandler Smith holds off teammate Michael Self for General Tire 150 victory at Phoenix

It wasn’t easy as Chandler Smith had to battle through adversity, a caution filled race, and hard-charging Ty Gibbs and teammate Michael Self to win the first-ever ARCA Menards Series race at Phoenix Raceway.

“Give it to this man (Billy Venturini, Crew Chief) right here,” Smith said to Fox Sports 1. “This combination is one of a kind. If we wouldn’t have made that call, we wouldn’t have won the race. We made a gamble and this is why we’re in victory lane. Can’t thank JBL, Toyota enough for all they gave me. Billy (Venturini) gave me a handful tonight with this JBL Toyota, but look where we ended up, all came down for a reason!”

Qualifying was held earlier in the day before the race and Ty Gibbs qualified on the pole with Michael Self on the outside pole.

The cautions didn’t take long to start flying as the first one fell on Lap 10 of the General Tire 150. The No. 06 of Tim Richmond spun out of Turn 4 after hitting the wall. A second caution took place on Lap 31 for the No. 22 for Christian McGhee who spun in Turn 4 after contact with the No. 16 of Gio Seclzi.

During a restart on Lap 36, Self had issues getting going as he either missed a shift or was having some sort of electrical problem. Self lost a ton of spots after restarting in the second position. But it didn’t take long for the caution to fly again, as this time the No. 16 of Seclzi once again spun around in Turn 2. And with that, it seemed as though there would only be a few laps of green flag racing until another caution occurred. A couple of more cautions flew, one for Self on Lap 52 and one for the No. 99 of Gracie Trotter.

Howie DiSavino III in the No. 32 was involved in an incident on Lap 78 sending him into the wall after contact from the No. 15 of Drew Dollar. Just a few laps after a restart with 64 to go, GMS Racing driver Sam Mayer was on pit road due to radiator problems.

Finally, after the cautions slowed down, the General Tire 150 saw a small green flag run with Ty Gibbs still dominating the race. Then, late in the race, a caution was seen with 23 to go as the No. 46 of Thad Moffitt hit the wall in Turn 3 when a right-front tire went down. The impact was hard enough that this relegated Moffitt to an 18th pace finish. Under the yellow, Gibbs and the rest of the top five came down to make their modified live pit stops.

Due to the late-race pit stop, Gibbs lost the lead and it was assumed by former ARCA champion Zane Smith. However, before the restart with 11 to go, there was a lot of confusion between the top runners on who was starting where, as many drivers had differing opinions. One driver, Bret Holmes, was black flagged for violating the restart order. Shortly after the restart, the yellow slowed the pace with eight to go, as Dollar and Jesse Love made hard contact with each other in Turn 4.

Since the incident occurred so late in the race, the race was put into a green-white-checker finish. Chandler Smith was the leader on the restart and despite hard charges by Gibbs and Self, the Talking Rock, Georgia native held on to score the eighth win of his ARCA Menards Series career.

“I lied,” Smith continued to Fox Sports 1. “We weren’t the car to beat, we just happened to win the race. We weren’t the best car tonight. There was at least one maybe or two better. I knew if we had track position, he’s (Michael Self) is so tough to beat. He’s a racecar driver. We led with a couple to go and won the race.”

After leading most of the race, Ty Gibbs came home to a frustrating third place.

“I have no words to summarize it or I’ll get in trouble,” Gibbs said to Fox Sports 1. “I can’t thank Joe Gibbs Racing, Monster Energy, everybody that’s apart of this deal. That’s all I can really say. I’m just really frustrated with what happened (restart confusion). This is just really embarrassing to the sport. Otherwise, I just can’t thank everybody enough.”

Smith led twice for 12 laps en route to victory. There were eight cautions for 56 laps and five leaders among six lead changes.
