Wright Motorsports 1st Phorm Porsche Poised and Ready to Defend Rolex 24 Win

NEXT UP: IMSA ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA
DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY | JANUARY 26-29

DAYTONA, Fla., (January 25, 2023) – The Rolex 24 At Daytona has arrived with Wright Motorsports and the No. 16 1st Phorm Porsche entering the week armed and ready to defend the team’s 2022 win in the GTD class. Last week, the team completed the Roar Before the 24, conducting the first shakedown of the new Porsche 911 GT3 R (type 992) at Daytona International Speedway. With official testing complete, race week activities begin, and thus the assault on the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship title and the top honors in the iconic endurance event, January 28 – 29.

“Our win last season is the perfect motivation entering into this year’s Rolex 24 and the 2023 championship,” said Team Owner John Wright. “All the pieces and all the hard work came together, and we proved that Wright Motorsports has what it takes to win. The 1st Phorm Porsche finished the Roar as the top Porsche but we still have some work to do in the upcoming days to keep making gains on the rest of the field. We’re feeling good heading into this weekend, and we’re excited to be back.”

Ryan Hardwick, Jan Heylen, and Zacharie Robichon have returned to defend last year’s win, this time joined by Intercontinental GT Challenge champion Dennis Olsen. The 26-year-old finished the 2022 Rolex 24 in third, racing a Porsche in the GTD Pro class.

The present-day field of entrants has yielded nine new Porsche 911 GT3 R race cars, which were delivered to teams at the end of 2022. While programs may have conducted private tests leading up to the start of the new season, last week’s Roar Before the 24 brought all the new entries together for several days of on-track shakedowns. The drivers noted an increase in the car’s drivability, as well as more efficient aerodynamics and torque. Both were key targets of Porsche when the newest iteration of the iconic 911 racer was designed.

Unofficially, the No. 16 1st Phorm Porsche will start the race from 13th place in the GTD class, one of five classes competing in the event. The GTP, LMP2, and LMP3 classes consist of varying types of prototypes while the GTD Pro and GTD classes strictly run with machinery based off of street cars from the world’s leading manufacturers. The GTD Pro class features all-professional driver lineups, while the GTD class driver lineups offer a mixture of professional and amateur-ranked lineups. The GTD class is the biggest run group, making up 40 percent of the 61-car field.

Activities for the Rolex 24 At Daytona will begin on Thursday, January 26 with the first of five practice sessions in two days. The start of the 61st Rolex 24 at Daytona begins at 1:40 PM Eastern on Saturday, January 28, concluding exactly 24 hours later on Sunday afternoon. The broadcast will air live from the wave of the green flag to the drop of the checkered flag on Peacock, NBC Universal’s streaming platform. The first hour of the race will also air live on NBC before switching to the USA Network. IMSA Radio will offer live coverage worldwide without brakes on imsaradio.com. For all event information, follow the team on social media or visit wright motorsports.com or imsa.com.

    Ryan Hardwick

I’m really looking forward to returning to the Rolex 24 with my Wright Motorsports team and teammates. Winning the race last year was truly one of the most special moments of my life. Experiencing something like that just leaves you yearning for more, so that is our focus going into this race. The Roar was a bit of a head scratcher for us. The BOP that was given to the Porsches had us all between three and four seconds off the pace of the other GTD cars, so we have our work cut out for us at a track that is so dependent on top speed. But if anyone can overcome challenges like these, it is our team. We will be ready to go to battle for 24 hours come race day.

    Jan Heylen

I’m excited to be back and I am really looking forward to next week. We’re obviously coming off a strong season last year but it’s a new year, and a new car. It’s nice to be here with the same team while we learn all there is to learn about this new car. This is my favorite event, so I’m really happy to be back and can’t wait to get started.

    Zacharie Robichon

Going into the race, we’ve been working very hard on the car to try and understand this new platform and finding the best way to exploit the speed out of it. Obviously at this point, there’s certain things out of our control, that may be hindering our performance. That being said, our job is to get the most out of the package we have and we’re checking all our boxes. We’re making steps to best understanding these new 911 GT3 R Porsches, and we’re looking forward to improving from where we started, as we have been.

    Dennis Olsen

The Roar Before the 24 and qualifying is done. We expected to be a little bit further up the field, but we’re working hard with the car and the team is doing a good job. It seems like the other manufacturers have a bit of an edge on the straight-line speed. Hopefully we’ll get some help there from the series organizers and we can be able to fight for the win. It has been nice to get started with the new car, and it’s definitely a huge challenge. We’re doing a lot of different things to understand the package best. We have a great team around us to do the right things, and I’m looking forward to the race. I think we will have a great chance.

Cadillac Racing bullish on hybrid car for 24-hour debut

Three Cadillac prototypes to take green flag for 61st Rolex 24 At Daytona in GTP class

DETROIT (Jan. 24, 2023) — Nine Cadillac Racing drivers, their respective team personnel and a large support group have the common goal of visiting Victory Circle in the 61st Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Excitement has been building for the debut of the three Cadillac hybrid prototypes in the reborn Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) class with the command to start engines Saturday, Jan. 28, for the twice-around-the-clock race given by grand marshal Mark Reuss, president of General Motors.

The No. 01 Cadillac prototype led the three-car contingent in the 20-minute qualifying session on the 3.56-mile, 12-turn Daytona International Speedway road course by claiming a second-row spot. The No. 02 Cadillac prototype qualified fifth and the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac qualified sixth.

Cadillac Racing has earned the overall victory in the Rolex 24 At Daytona – the traditional season-opening race of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship – four times since the 2017 debut of the DPi class. Not one has come from a pole start.

“I think there’s always a big excitement coming into a new season, especially with the first event so big,” said 2021 DPi champion Pipo Derani, co-driver of the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac prototype with Alexander Sims and Jack Aitken.

“After you do this for a few years, you learn how to control your emotions. Everything just falls into place. You just do what you have to do. Once you focus on that and know you have that support from the team, then you’re also more relaxed.

“There’s really nothing different to do than what you’ve already done and those things have worked because we’ve won races and championships. That also helps you calm down and focus on the important things. Come race day and come Sunday afternoon, you hope everything fell into place and you have the shot at victory in this event.”

Design of the new race car began more than two years ago, with on-track development beginning in July 2022. Cadillac Racing continues to collect data and gain insights about the car, its systems and the new Michelin tires with every on-track session. And the race will be a learning opportunity for future events.

GTP entries have five free practice sessions available over Thursday and Friday.

“There has been a ton of work leading up to that moment here in Daytona to get ready and get the cars there,” said Sebastien Bourdais, co-driver with Renger van der Zande and Scott Dixon of the No. 01 Cadillac entry. “Every time there’s a regulation change, you show up at Daytona, the hardest race of the year, it’s a 24-hour race, and it’s in January. Nobody feels ready, but you’ve got a job ahead and you have to make the best of it. Thanks for all of the efforts the team has done whether at Cadillac or at Ganassi. Looking forward to a great season, and it starts today.”

The electrified Cadillac prototype features an all-new Cadillac 5.5-liter DOHC V8 engine developed by GM’s Performance and Racing propulsion team based in Pontiac, Michigan, with a seven-speed sequential gearbox. IMSA has specified the power output at 670 horsepower, including the hybrid system; weight at 1,030kg without fuel and driver; and a maximum of 8,800 RPM.

Cadillac, the only LMDh manufacturer with a naturally aspirated engine in the GTP class, will seek to build on its legacy of success in the 61st Rolex 24 At Daytona with its fifth overall victory 2017. The list:

    • 2020 (Renger van der Zande, Ryan Briscoe, Scott Dixon, Kamui Kobayashi)
    • 2019 (Renger van der Zande, Fernando Alonso; Jordan Taylor, Kamui Kobayashi)
    • 2018 (Christian Fittipaldi, Filipe Albuquerque, Joao Barbosa)
    • 2017 (Jeff Gordon, Jordan Taylor, Ricky Taylor, Max Angelelli)

Also, since 2017, a Cadillac prototype has recorded 27 victories in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition – the most by any manufacturer — and three Manufacturer Championships.

Cadillac Racing driver lineup for Grand Touring Prototype class

    No. 01 Cadillac (qualified fourth)

Sebastien Bourdais: “I think (qualifying) is a strong start; obviously not the pole but as close as we can get without getting it. I think it bodes well for the race. Now it’s just about executing, making no mistakes. It’s like a crash course of learning. There’s so much to absorb, so much to figure out, so much to strategize with the new car because up until not long ago we were completely in practice mode trying to get the car reliable, tire testing, this and that and the other and then all of a sudden get ready for the biggest race of the season. It’s a big adjustment, mind switch and get into the racing vibe for a 24-hour race with my two great teammates. We’ve learned a lot of the car and we’re gaining confidence.”

Renger van der Zande: “I’m excited how close the field is; everybody is within a couple of tenths (of a second) and that’s an impressive effort for a new class, new regulations and for the systems that have been put in place to go racing for the future. Starting fourth is an amazing achievement and a compliment to whole team.”

Scott Dixon: “I’m looking forward to the race this weekend. It’s kind of crazy when you look at the preparation from when the first car arrived to its development of it and how the technology has shifted. It’s been fun to work with it, so I think everyone is excited to finally get to the race. There’s been a lot of prep and lead time and expectations for this one. It’s one of my favorite races of the year. You get to drive the car a lot, you get to have some fantastic racing. I think this year one of the largest fields that we’ve seen in years. It’s going to be fun, but I think it will possibly a race of reliability as well. Knock on wood that we’ve done as much as we can as a group between Cadillac, GM and Chip Ganassi Racing that we can make it to the win and be fighting for the win.”

    No. 02 Cadillac (qualified fifth)

Richard Westbrook: “We had a productive three days at the Roar. We got exactly what we were searching for, which is more miles, more knowledge about the car, more knowledge about the tire and more knowledge about the whole new formula that we’re going into. Now we’re all out there together, we can see our pace against everyone else and it just makes us all more even more determined and excited with one eye on the future.”

Earl Bamber: “A good qualifying with everyone learning these cars. We can see already that it’s ultra-competitive and it’s a true credit to IMSA, the manufacturers, the teams and everyone who’s been involved to make for a great race.”

Alex Lynn: “I really am enjoying driving this car and it’s giving me really good feedback. We’re improving so much with each session and it’s a really enjoyable job when you start making huge strides on improving this brand-new vehicle that we got, so I’m excited for the race.”

No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac (qualified sixth)

Pipo Derani: “The car is working well and the most is that it looks like we have a good car for the race. That’s our goal. We’re trying to use every session that we have, even qualifying, to learn more about our equipment. Any time we can be on track it helps us get better and improve the car. Not the fantastic final result in qualifying but lots of data has been gathered that will help us next week.”

Alexander Sims: “We’re working through things in the practice sessions and there are still some things for us to learn with these new cars. We have time this week to try a few things. In the first part of the race we have to take it step by step and try to improve, even if it means making changes during the pit stops – just tweaks we can do during the race – because it’s about being fast at the end and being there at the end. It’s an incredibly tight field and Pipo (Derani) was compromised in qualifying with the red flag, not getting a reference beforehand while others did.”

Jack Aitken: “We didn’t get a huge amount of mileage (during the Roar) just with red flags and weather, so this week we’ll keep building on what we’ve learned and get the car dialed in more on specifics. We’re all disappointed with the quals, but it’s probably the least important qualifying of the year for us. I’m looking forward to getting track time in practice and excited to compete for the first time in the race with this team.”

  • RISI COMPETIZIONE PRE-RACE REPORT FOR 61ST ANNUAL ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA

RISI COMPETIZIONE PRE-RACE REPORT FOR 61ST ANNUAL ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA

    Risi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3 No. 62:
    James Calado (GBR)
    Alessandro Pier Guidi (ITA)
    Davide Rigon (ITA)
    Daniel Serra (BRA)

Daytona Beach, Florida (January 24, 2023)…Houston, Texas-based Risi Competizione is back to Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the 61st anniversary of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Rolex 24 At Daytona, January 28-29, 2023. After many years of success with the Ferrari 488, which won 500 races globally, this year the team is bringing a new Ferrari 296 GT3 to the 3.56-mile speedway road course.

With a 61-car field and a brand-new car, the team have their work cut out for them. The Risi team’s participation in the Roar Before the 24 allowed them to test the car in near race conditions after only having a short shakedown in Texas following delivery and prior to transport to Daytona, where they qualified P9 in the GTD Pro class.

Risi Competizione 2023 Daytona drivers, James Calado, Alessandro Pier Guidi, Davide Rigon and Daniel Serra, all Ferrari Competizioni GT factory drivers, have experience with testing the car and are no stranger to the Florida superspeedway. This quad of drivers finished second last year in the 60th running of the twice-around-the-clock endurance event and lead a good portion of the race. They return this year ready to climb one step further and pilot the always demanding race to victory.

Calado and Pier Guidi ended the 2022 race season on a high note after capturing their third FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) LMGTE Pro championship as co-drivers. They also helped deliver the FIA WEC Manufacturer’s Championship to Ferrari. The duo will contest FIA WEC this season in the new Ferrari 499P as Ferrari returns to the top class.

Rigon and Serra helped Risi Competizione win the 2022 IMSA Michelin Endurance (IMEC) GTD Pro Team Championship, along with becoming the IMEC GTD Pro Driver Champions. They are back with Risi this season for all four IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup, Daytona 24-hour, Sebring 12-hour, Watkins Glen 6 hour and Petit Le Mans 10-hour, endurance races in the new Ferrari 296 GT3 Prancing Horse.

(L-R) Ferrari Competizioni GT factory drivers and Risi Competizione teammates for the 2023
Rolex 24 At Daytona include Alessandro Pier Guidi, Daniel Serra, James Calado, and Davide Rigon
Rick Mayer, Risi Competizione Race Engineer:
“We are glad to be back at Daytona with the four pro drivers. It’s a challenging and full field again this year and we have a new car we’re tweaking for its first race, but we expect to be there by race start.”

James Calado, driver No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3:
“Pleased to be back with Giuseppe Risi and the Risi crew for another Rolex 24. We were so close last year and had such an amazing battle to the finish. We so want to get on that top step and take home a victory. It’s a new car and there’s much to do but we have the right combination for a promising result next Sunday afternoon.”

Alessandro Pier Guidi, driver No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3:
“Memories of last year at Daytona are still fresh. We ran a strong race but finishing second is always painful. In a 24-hour race though, you never know what may happen so we just will go in prepared for anything and do the job required.”

Davide Rigon, driver No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3:
“As always, I’m happy to be back with Risi Competizione, and not just for the Rolex 24, but also for Daniel and me to defend the (IMSA Michelin) Endurance Cup. Daytona is just the first of the four endurance races.

“It was not an easy Roar at Daytona. Of course, it was so nice to drive the new 296 GT3 in Daytona with the super team Risi. Everybody was getting used to the car, so it was a good shakedown, so to say. Qualifying was challenging. Now we are focused to prepare everything well for the race.”

Daniel Serra, qualifying driver No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3:
“Although we had some challenges for qualifying last weekend, the Ferrari 296 GT3 is an exciting new car and there are always adjustments to make with a new car. The Risi crew do a good job and we expect to be ready for the always exciting 24-hour challenge at Daytona.”

Risi Competizione, who counts this year as its 22nd entry in the historic twice-around-the-clock Florida endurance race, has competed with Ferrari models since its start in 1998. The team’s inaugural year featured a Ferrari 333SP in the WSC class. Their GT racing successes, starting in 2003, includes competition with the Ferrari 360, 430, 458 and most recently 488 Prancing Horse models. Team Principal Giuseppe Risi now continues his Ferrari racing legacy in America with the newest GT addition to the Ferrari race family, the 296 GT3.

  • Nolan Siegel Joins Sean Creech Motorsport for the Rolex 24 At Daytona

Nolan Siegel Joins Sean Creech Motorsport for the Rolex 24 At Daytona

Young Californian to contest his second 24-hour race at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (24 January 2023) – Sean Creech Motorsport (SCM) officially completed its Rolex 24 at Daytona driver lineup today with the addition of Nolan Siegel – an open wheel and sports car veteran despite his young age.

The 18-year-old Palo Alto, Calif. native joins João Barbosa, Lance Willsey and Nico Pino behind the wheel of the pole-winning No. 33 SCM Exelixis/Focal One Ligier JS P320, as the Jupiter, Fla.-based team contests the first of two home races.

Jumping into a kart at the age of 8, Siegel moved up to the USF Pro Championships (formerly the Road to Indy) open wheel ladder system beginning in 2019. In 2023, he will compete in INDY NXT (formerly Indy Lights) – just one step below the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. In 2019, he began racing sports cars as well, contesting Michelin Pilot Challenge, Prototype Challenge and WeatherTech SportsCar Championship events.

Siegel will drive three vastly different race cars over the course of the week. He tested on Monday his INDY NXT Dallara IL-15 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He then on Friday he returns behind the wheel of the No. 39 Porsche 718 GT4 RS CS for the four hour IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge event (Friday, 1:45 p.m., Peacock TV).

“Thanks to Sean and to Lance for this opportunity!” said Siegel. “The priority for me this week is getting to know the team, getting laps in the LMP3 car, and getting into the WeatherTech sessions now that all the classes are running at different speeds than last year. Of course, it will be a balance on Thursday and Friday, between that and the IMPC sessions and race on Friday. This is the first time I’ll race two different series on one weekend but I’m not the only driver doing it and I’ll have enough time to focus on both.

“This team has a great car, with two second place finishes in this race and pole last weekend,” Siegel continued. “Luck always plays a part, but this is a very experienced team – I’ve raced against them before and they’re always competitive. I don’t see why we can’t win. I’ve watched IMSA since I was a little kid in karts so it would be a huge milestone to win this race. It’s a dream for every driver.”

“Nolan brings a good deal of experience,” said team principal Sean Creech. “He also knows IMSA procedures – pass arounds, class splits, all the processes that are a big part of sports car racing. There’s night racing, with the lights coming into the car, with the speeds of the cars around you and how the faster cars can really dive bomb into Turn One and the Le Mans Chicane. The closing speed of the GTP cars is so much faster than the LMP3 car so it’s a lot to take in, to be aware of. He has experience at Daytona in these cars and that’s huge for us.”

19-year-old Danny Soufi tested with the team at last weekend’s Roar Before the Rolex 24. While the team was impressed with his pace and consistency, they felt that the track time was not sufficient to get him up to speed with the nuances of IMSA racing that would enable him to perform at the level the team believes he is capable of.

“We had the opportunity to test Danny last month and bring him on board as a valued member of this team,” said Willsey. “He did a very good job last weekend with the practice time available but in the end, the time was not sufficient to give him the chance to perform at the level we know he’s capable of, or to get up to speed with IMSA’s rules in regard to multi-class racing. We look forward to working with him over the next two months in anticipation of his involvement at Sebring.”

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s season opener gets underway on Thursday, with three sessions including night practice. The 61st Rolex 24 At Daytona takes the green flag Saturday at 1:40 p.m. Eastern. The race will be broadcast live in the U.S. on the NBC family of networks, beginning and ending with network NBC. The race will also be live streamed in its entirety on Peacock TV. International viewers can watch via IMSA.tv, with IMSA Radio also available at IMSA.com.

“We’re honored to have Alan, Trent, and the VOLT effort run with Wright for the 2023 season,” said Team Owner John Wright. “They did an incredible job in last year’s Michelin Pilot Challenge championship, and they’re off to a strong start already this season. Making the step up to the WeatherTech series and joining the Porsche family is an exciting move for them, and they have what it takes to fight for the win.”

Pre-season testing at the Roar Before the 24 took place last week, and the bright yellow Porsche lit up the track as each of the drivers cycled through to get situated with the new car. During the opening sessions, the team ran initial new-car shakedowns, going through a basic checklist of items as the drivers and engineers became acquainted with their new machinery. With Wright’s two decades of experience racing Porsche machinery, every minute was used most efficiently to prepare for the following week’s competition, the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Unofficially, the No. 77 VOLT® Lighting Porsche will start the race from 17th place in the GTD class, one of five classes competing in the event.

    Alan Brynjolfsson

This race is very different for me than anyone on the team and probably most people in the paddock. It’s brand new to me, so I’ve got a completely different focus and perspective. I’m just looking to learn, be humble, be safe, and get more comfortable and be better. That’s a hundred percent of my focus in this race. Our job and mission right now is to learn the ergonomics, the feel of the car, how it handles, and the environment.

    Trent Hindman

It has been a very positive week, all things considered: Brand new car and a new team, and for VOLT, a new championship. The No. 77 moving to GTD has been a good learning experience.

It was good to get everybody through the car during the Roar. That was the main thing: Learning what each of our individual jobs are when it comes to me, Alan, Max, and Kevin, and working on executing those individual jobs as best we can. It’s really fun to see Alan in a WeatherTech series session. It has been a very long time coming and he’s found a home really quick. It’s a pleasure to be a part of that process and we’re still always going to be searching for more performance come the Rolex 24.

    Max Root

I’m very excited to be here for my second Rolex 24. I’m happy to be with Wright Motorsports this time around, and we’re definitely learning the new car and trying to dial it in as much as possible. Spending the week before testing has been immensely helpful for our development. Now it’s just all about focusing on putting it all together and getting the drivers changes right, as well as all the other things we want to get right during the race leading up to the big weekend.

    Kevin Estre

I’m very happy to be here and race another Rolex 24. It’s a new team, new car, and new teammates for me. It’s difficult to know exactly where we stand, but we definitely made some improvement during the Roar learning the car and the new tricks we have to implement in this car to be quick at Daytona. We’re definitely not where we want to be, but we’re working on it. It’s great to be with the Wright Motorsports team. It’s a program I’ve been racing against for years. Now I can see it from the inside and see how they’re so successful. We can’t wait to start the race week, hopefully with better balance of performance and a good spirit.

Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Teams Secure Double-Pole Sweep and Top-Three GTD Lockout in Qualifying Sunday for Next Weekend’s 61st Rolex 24 At Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (January 22, 2023) – Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Teams WeatherTech Racing, Winward Racing, SunEnergy1 Racing and Team Korthoff Motorsports combined to secure a double-pole sweep and top-three GT Daytona (GTD) lockout in qualifying Sunday for next weekend’s 61st Rolex 24 At Daytona at Daytona International Speedway (DIS). Maro Engel drove the No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 to the GTD Pro class pole with a top lap time of 1:46.784 (120.018 mph). Philip Ellis in turn won the GTD pole in the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 to give the team its second-consecutive Rolex 24 pole position with a class-leading lap time of 1:46.093 (120.799 mph), which was fastest overall on the day for both GTD categories.

WeatherTech and Winward were the pole winners in a top-four overall Mercedes-AMG GT3 sweep of the GTD classes as Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing competitors left nothing on the table in a perfect qualifying performance on the 3.56-mile DIS road course.

Fabian Schiller held the GTD pole in the No. 75 SunEnergy1 Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 with less than four minutes to go and ultimately ended up second fastest, clocking in at 1:46.312 (120.551 mph). The top-three GTD sweep was completed by Mikael Grenier in his first race in the No. 32 Team Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 with a lap time of 1:46.705 (120.107 mph).

Engel and Ellis each won their first Rolex 24 pole positions, but the No. 57 team’s top qualifying effort was the second Rolex 24 pole in a row for Winward Racing. In 2022, Russell Ward and Lucas Auer co-drove the No. 57 to a qualifying race victory to secure the GTD pole for last year’s race. Ellis, Ward, Auer and returning team driver Indy Dontje co-drive the No. 57 in next weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona where Winward looks for its second GTD victory in three years after winning in the team’s first attempt at the day-long race in 2021.

Engel, who co-drove with Ellis, Ward and Dontje in Winward’s 2021 victory, now looks to give Mercedes-AMG its first GTD Pro class win next weekend in the WeatherTech Racing/Proton Competition No. 79 with co-drivers Cooper MacNeil, Daniel Juncadella and Jules Gounon.

Schiller shares the No. 75 SunEnergy1 Mercedes-AMG GT3 with team owner and driver Kenny Habul, Luca Stolz and Axcil Jefferies.

Grenier co-drives the Team Korthoff No. 32 with returning team driver Mike Skeen and their teammates Kenton Koch and Maximilian Götz. The No. 32 Korthoff Mercedes-AMG GT3 team finished third in GTD in last year’s Rolex 24 and led the season-long championship standings for the majority of the season.

On-track action resumes at Daytona International Raceway this Wednesday in preparation for the 61st Rolex 24 At Daytona IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-opening race, January 28 – 29.

The opening hour of the Rolex 24 airs live on the flagship NBC Network on Saturday, January 28 at 1:30 p.m. EST. Coverage continues on the USA Network on Saturday from 2:30 to 8 p.m. EST and then again from 10 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. EST.

The race can be seen from Midnight through 5:59 a.m. EST Sunday on NBC’s Peacock streaming network before resuming on USA from 6 a.m. to Noon EST. The race then closes out with a return for the final two hours on NBC that takes the coverage to the checkered flag.

Maro Engel, Driver – No. 79 WeatherTech Racing/Proton Competition Mercedes-AMG GT3: “We definitely have an amazing car, that’s for sure. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is well adapted to all of the forms of racing we do in GT racing. From the long distance races as well as the sprint rounds. It’s always confidence inspiring, just gives the driver confidence and I definitely have to thank Mercedes-AMG for that. I think all four of the teams did a really good job today. It’s clear that we were told to push, but I’m not sure that’s the case across the grid. I’m sure there’s a few cars that will suddenly find some pace next week. Overall, it was a strong go from the team. We have some room to improve, from me personally in qualifying, but obviously it was enough for pole, which is great.”

Philip Ellis, Driver – No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3: “Last year at Daytona, and especially in the last half of the 2022 season, we were really, really strong. We’ve been able to keep that momentum going into this year. Of course, the team did great work in the off season. We worked a lot on the car and it shows. All of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 teams did the job. I was able to have a great, great lap and it showed. I think we hit the nail on the head, as did the other teams, so for us it’s fantastic. It’s the best starting position you can have for the race, but of course then it doesn’t mean anything. It’s going to be a different animal, racing 24 hours, there’s a lot of traffic, a lot can happen and it’s going to be a long, grueling race.”

Fabian Schiller, Driver – No. 75 SunEnergy1 Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3: “We had a good qualifying and have a great package with our Mercedes-AMG GT3. We showed it in the practice sessions and then qualifying went very well for us, finishing P2 overall and one, two, three, four for Mercedes-AMG overall is as good as you can get. But it’s a long race and we will see what the others have for 24 hours.”

Mikael Grenier, Driver – No. 32 Team Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3: “Qualifying was good. We improved the car a lot since Friday, because that day was a bit tricky for us. The team did a super job. In qualifying, Mercedes-AMG showed everything, but I believe the others are playing a bit, which is a shame. But I trust IMSA will make the right decision because we showed what we have. Korthoff is a very good team, good people inside the team, good mechanics. I know two of them from last year in Europe. We had some nice tricks. Obviously, I think we can do it, but it’s a long way in front of us before the finish of the Rolex 24.”

  • Front Row Rolex 24 Start for The Heart of Racing

Front Row Rolex 24 Start for The Heart of Racing

Daytona, Fla. (22 January 2023) – When the green flag drops on the 61st Running of the Rolex 24 Hour At Daytona next Saturday (live coverage on NBC, 1:30 PM), The Heart of Racing (HOR) will start the 2023 IMSA championship from the front row of the GTD PRO field with the No. 23 Aston Martin Vantage GT3.

The sister No. 27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage will start the race from the fourth row of the GTD class as a robust field of 61 GTD and Prototype machines are slated to start the race.

The two team entries earned their grid positions in a hectic 15-minute qualifying session on Sunday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway to close out the three-day Roar Before the 24 test weekend.

Ross Gunn turned his best time of the weekend in the No. 23 Aston Martin with a 1:46.824-second lap, which led the session until the final moments when Gunn’s quickest time was eclipsed by just over a tenth of a second on the 3.56-mile circuit. The front row start marks the best-ever qualifying result for HOR at Daytona International Speedway.

2022 IMSA GTD Champion Roman De Angelis piloted the No. 27 Aston Martin GTD entry for the session, placing it in the top half of the grid with a fourth-row starting spot for the iconic 24-hour race.

The Aston Martin has had a competitive and consistent pace throughout the weekend over the course of five practice sessions ahead of qualifying.

The 61st running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona International Speedway weekend will start on Thursday, January 26th, with five practice sessions before Saturday’s main event. With live coverage on NBC, the famous 24-hour race will take the green flag at 1:40 PM ET.

No. 23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Driver Quotes:

Ross Gunn: “It’s nice to qualify in the front of the grid. Of course a qualifying session for a 24-hour race doesn’t promise much so we still have a lot of work to do. I think we can work on setup a little bit for the race, and hopefully, we’ll be able to fight for some good results.”

Alex Riberas: “First, I’d like to say I’m super excited to be in Daytona for this special event. This is my seventh Rolex 24, and I feel like each year I learn something more. This year I feel very confident with the car and the team because are definitely showing up to compete and ready to fight to the end to get that precious watch.”

David Pittard: “I’m excited to be here for the first time with The Heart of Racing, but it’s my second time here in the Aston Martin Vantage. It’s great to be here with an IMSA team that has had so much experience and it shows. We’ve worked on many improvements during the sessions on Friday and Saturday and the balance of the car feels really good. With a competitive lineup like ours in the car, we are ready to make the most out of the 24 hours with a nice clean car so I think we have a good shot at the win.”

No. 27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Rolex 24 Driver Quotes:

Roman De Angelis: “Qualifying went really well, we’re in the top half of the grid which is really important and a great place to start for the Rolex 24; hopefully far enough forward to dodge the chaos at the beginning. The car delivered a solid qualifying lap, and Ross did a really nice job qualifying second in GTD PRO. Both HOR cars are competitive this year so we’ll see what happens in the race.”

Marco Sorensen: “I think practice went quite steady; we tried a lot of things with the car to make it the best possible for race day. Roman did a great job in qualifying and now we can shift our focus to the race next weekend.”

Darren Turner: “Being back in Daytona with The Heart of Racing has been great and it’s great to have the hard work that’s been put into the setup of the car start to pay off. It feels a lot different from what we had last year and is a leap in the right direction. With a bit more tweaking with test sessions this week, I think we will be in a perfect position for the main event.”

Ian James: “We had a good Roar with very valuable practice time to getting ready for the race. It’s always a game of luck, but this year we feel more prepared than we ever have leading into the Rolex 24.”

Jr III Racing Scores Fifth in VP Racing SportsCar Challenge Race 2

Daytona, Fla. (22 January 2023) – Jr III (“Junior-Three”) Racing finished fifth in Race 2 of the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge after taking the series first-ever pole and then finishing on the podium in Race 1 on Saturday, Bijoy Garg once again got back behind the wheel of the the No. 3 S2 Cyber Ligier JS P320 for the second 45-minute sprint race of the weekend.

The Saturday outing marked Garg’s first- ever sports car start, as he impressed with his speed to earn the pole award. The race didn’t start as hoped for, as the California native got loose going into turn one and spun. Rejoining the field last in the order, Garg quickly caught up to his fellow LMP3 class runners after just three laps as he pushed forward through the field to score a well-fought podium in his first IMSA start.

Looking to continue that momentum in Sunday’s race, Garg started on the front row once again based on his second-fastest qualifying lap. Garg kept the No. 3 LMP3 within podium contention until a bobble in the Le Mans Chicane on lap 14 looped him around. Returning to the race unscathed, Garg rejoined the field in fifth for the final 10 laps of the race. Once again he had good pace, focusing forward to net the second fastest lap of the race with a 1:46.22-second flyer around the fabled Daytona roval.

“Going into the race, I knew it was going to be a long one, and I had to keep my head down,” said Garg. “I feel like we accomplished a lot over the weekend. I learned a lot about the car and the track. Our results didn’t match our pace today; but overall I felt like the Jr III Racing crew guys gave me a fast car all weekend.”

Jr III Racing Team Owner, Billy Glavin was pleased with the effort and preparation from the team for their first VPSC weekend as they supported Garg’s IMSA debut.

“I think for the first weekend in the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge, it went pretty well, all things considered,” said Glavin. “I think Bijoy will be a bit more settled in the car for Sebring, and be a bit more comfortable with the format of the races. I believe we can translate our pace from Daytona to more races this season and we definitely have the potential to get some more wins.”

Round 2 of the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge will be staged at Sebring International Raceway on March 11-12. Jr III Racing will also kick off its IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaign the following weekend with the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Third Position for WTRAndretti to Wrap the Roar

Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport Will Start the 61st Running of the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA in Third Position

(Daytona Beach, Fla.) January 22, 2023 — After setting the pace early in Sunday afternoon’s qualifying session, concluding the 2023 Roar Before the Rolex 24, Ricky Taylor piloted Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport’s (WTRAndretti) No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06 to a starting position of third for the 61st Running of the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA.

A strategy decision by the team, opting to stay in the pits on used tires at the end of a red-flag-impacted session, was ultimately the deciding factor in the result. The team is confident in their ability to fight to the front over the 24 hours of hard GTP racing ahead.

“The session all came down to tires,” said two-time IMSA Champion Ricky Taylor. “It was an intentional decision by us to take one set, and MSR took two. Based on the risk of red flags with everyone running new cars, I still think that was the right decision. If the session had stayed red for 30 more seconds, we were on pole. As it turned out, the No. 60 got to use that second set properly. I thought the car was really, really good and if we couldn’t be on pole, it’s nice for the other Acura to finish first after all the work everyone has put in at HPD, Oreca, and WTRAndretti. We’ll see them in the race.”
